wo non-profit firms, Oando Foundation (OF) and Qatar-based Educate A Child (EAC), have launched a partnership to provide quality primary education to 60,000 Out-ofSchool Children (OOSC) in Nigeria by 2018. Addressing newsmen in Lagos, the organizers said the three-year project is a timely intervention on access to quality education, increased enrolment and an integrated school environment. Head, Oando Foundation, Adekanla Adegoke, said 10.5 million Nigerian children are out of school, the largest globally according to the UNESCO report. “These children, the majority of whom live in the most marginalized areas of society, have no access to quality primary education due to the tremendous obstacles they face including extreme poverty, limited resources aong others,” she said. Senior EAC Education Specialist (Africa), Michael Cacich said, “By 2018, the partnership would have achieved the placement of 60,000 OOSC in 100 schools, 46 of which will be in the North; improved the learning experience of 60,000 pupils in public schools, enhanced educational infrastructure in 100 schools,” Cacich said. a culture of consciousness and positivity with its audience,” Maryam explained. In the course of her job, she has interviewed Zahra Buhari, Asa Asika, Yusuf Tumi Abubakar, Bello El-rufai and other prominent young Nigerians. On the place of blogging in Nigeria and the entertainment industry, Maryam said bloggers globally are influencers who connect with people in basic ways. “In Nigeria, it is a great way to reach out to people but it is still untapped in the entertainment industry. Many political bloggers made a difference during the 2015 elections with blogging,” she disclosed. Maryam’s encounter with a man wielding a machete while on the job was one experience she will hold to. She said: “The most baffling experiences
occurred during elections and being out there interacting with people, a man wielded a machete at us in the car because he wanted a thousand naira.” Relating on ways to improve volunteering and advocacy in Nigeria, she said the problem is lack of awareness on what it means to be a volunteer. “I think many Nigerians are not aware of what and where to volunteer and it would be great if many of us take out time to volunteer for causes we are passionate about or gifted in,” Maryam said. The young blogger advocated for uniqueness and originality as she urged other youth to be original in what they do. She said: “Try not to copy others because they seem to be doing well but instead create a unique path. Set no limitations for yourself, and let God guide you.” she advised.

he Bank of I n d u s t r y (BoI) has initiated the Youth E n t re p re n e u r s h i p Support (YES) programme to train and fund 1,200 youth annually. The Acting Managing Director, Mr. Waheed Olagunju who spoke while signing a pact with entrepreneurship capacity building facilitators in Lagos this week said the YES-Programme is designed to address youth unemployment in Nigeria. He said the programme will be launched in Abuja on March 17, 2016 noting that it entails building the capacity of youth by equipping them with the requisite entrepreneurial knowledge and skills, and funding their business plans to become selfemployed. He said
participants would be drawn from aspiring entrepreneurs of ages of 18 and 35 years with innovative ideas who must have a minimum e d u c a t i o n a l qualification of an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) or its equivalent. “It would lead to promotion of self-employment among graduates of institutions of higher learning, thereby changing their jobseeking mind-set. And it will deepen financial inclusion by de-risking the young aspiring entrepreneurs and making them eligible for small business loans to be provided by BoI. “About 10,000 online applications will be solicited nationwide, from which 2,000 would be selected for the online training component,” Olagunju said.

peaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara will on March 24 launch a global on-line discount card for youth serving under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme. The innovation was aimed at subsidizing expenses of serving corps members as well as students of tertiary institutions in the country, the initiator of the concept, and former member of the House, Bimbo Daramola said. The card with an embedded security chips, he said, would be accepted by more than 50 private companies that agreed to offer discount to the youth on their services or goods. “The effect of our current economic realities on our youth is harsh, so, it is our responsibility to look for safety nets to shield them from crimes and criminality.

inning goal scorer of the Nigeria’s ‘Dream Team’ of 1996 that won Olympic gold medal in the United States, Emmanuel Amunike has expressed confidence that the present team featuring in this year’s Rio de Janeiro, Brazil could repeat the feat recorded 20 years ago. Nigeria’s team stunned Argentina 3-2 in the 1996 final in front of about 90,000 spectators near Atlanta city
to become the first African football nation to win Olympic gold. Amunike, in an interview with FIFA website on Tuesday, however acknowledged that there has been clear differences between the present crop of player and the 1996 victorious ones, but such differences would not be enough to dash any hope of a replica of success in Brazil. “Don’t forget we had some players who featured for the
senior national team at the 1994 World Cup. But beating Brazil boosted our confidence because it was a dramatic match. We were almost out, but we fought and pulled it off. “There is nothing to indicate Nigeria cannot repeat the feat of 1996. It was a beautiful thing that we laid the foundation and others have followed our path, and I think our current team can repeat that success,” said Amuneke.
