ORGANIZING YOUR SPACE WITH DIVIDERS AND SCREENS Room dividers and screens are a great means of organizing the living space and performing a small miracle of ‘doubling’ the number of rooms. Sadly, in newer houses this design element does not get to be used often enough and even then, incorrectly. The look of a moveable or collapsible wall can make or break the decor.
Such a divider will create a retro feeling in the room.
A printed canvas will turn your work zone into a veritable green space! Classic Chinese screens range from quite minimalistic, with just a couple of bamboo leaves depicted on a light background, to really luxurious ones, with complicated design in red and gold. Choose the style according to the style of your room decor.
In Japan and China, a screen has always been a popular art canvas. A decorated divider looks like a portable painting and is very functional. You can make a screen yourself and decorate it on your own. Look at the suggestions below that may inspire your creativity. Luxurious patterned room divider. It may not be suitable as a shield of a change room but it will serve to separate the working space in your room from the space where you receive visitors.
Glass partitions are great for your office or for the room decorated in the minimalistic style.
When buying fabric for covering a room divider, get extra yards to make a couple of decorative cushions to tie the decor together. Room dividers are not advisable for tiny rooms where they may create a cluttered feeling but they are great for larger spaces.
The next screen is easy to make using a moderate thickness particle board, stain or paint, and black-and-white photographs.

A working fireplace in the house usually becomes its focal point both visually and as a heart of the household. Therefore, decor around this important feature must reflect your take on beauty and style. Let’s talk about such important features as its facing, walls in its immediate proximity, and even the very shape of the fireplace. Traditional Style
Such a fireplace will be faced in wood or stone with no unnecessary excess. The mantle and wall decor will be traditional – a large mirror, a painting, intimate lighting. Sometimes the wall can be decorated in a colour different from the other walls in the room. For a more opulent decor of the entire space, you can choose a more ornamental fireplace area that will be closer to the traditions of a French chateau. Usually fireplaces of this type are faced in white marble and decorated with carvings and pilasters. Such a composition will draw attention to it even in a most exquisite decor. The main conditions are light walls and striking lighting that visually enhances the space making it look like a ballroom. Neoclassical Style
A fireplace always has its rightful place in a classic style interior design while the other furnishings may be either opulent or modest. An English style fireplace is not unlike a real English gentleman – not showy but obviously well-bred.
4
ALL ABOUT HOME
This style is less demanding. While it is based on traditional elements, it does not require rigorous rules and allows eclectic details. Your fireplace may be combined with painting, murals, niches, or a podium, it may have a unique shape or open hearth – all this is quite acceptable in a neoclassical style. The dimensions of the room are not as important as they are in a classically decorated space. If you are going to use an electric fireplace, this style

is much more compatible with it than the rigid English or French traditional. Country Style Country style fireplaces look best in a spacious house with high ceilings and bold

decorating surfaces like brick or wood. The room where the fireplace is situated may be decorated like a hunting lodge or a chalet. Often, the fireplace in such a space is placed in the corner. The mantle and the wall over the fireplace could be decorated with hunting trophies, a collection of arms, or handmade wrought iron items.

The lovers of whimsical lines of this decorating style may extend it towards their fireplace. Remember that Art Nouveau is not a mass-production fare; you will need a designer to create your unique fireplace. Minimalistic Style In fireplaces with minimal decoration the emphasis is made either on their shape or on the open hearth. We cannot call it decor
per se - it is more of an architectural feature. Of course, a minimalistic fireplace will look its best in minimalistic and hi-tech interiors. Faux Fireplace When certain conditions of your living space do not allow for a real fireplace, you can purchase a fireplace front and decorate it in the style of your dreams. Inside the hearth, you can place candles, vases, a wood pile, or inserts in any decorative material, like glass or mirror.

MAGIC OF FLAME AND AROMA Aromatic candles are ideal for the bedroom. Their hypnotic flame promotes trust, intimacy, and even seductiveness. The flame creates the atmosphere conducive of intimate talks or meditation; it calms and relaxes. Taking a bath surrounded by aromatic candles is a truly unique and luxurious experience. There are no fast rules as to the aroma of the candles. A rare home where smoking is permitted can benefit from stronger floral, woody, or spicy scents that help neutralize the cigarette smoke smell. Strong scents will also do well in a home filled with stuffed furniture, textiles, and carpeting that absorb smells much better. Light your candles in advance if you want your visitor to enjoy the aroma, because the scent becomes evident only after the top layer has melted. The best time to prep the candles is the day or at least a few hours before.
How to Choose a Candle • Smooth surface proves that the candle contains mineral wax that can convey all the nuances of the aroma, down to the subtlest ones, much better. • A candle in a transparent holder is the best because it makes it easy to check whether the wick is centrally located in the bottom plate by turning it upside down to look. This is the first proof of quality, which means that the wick will not bend, and the candle will burn through.
8
ALL ABOUT HOME
• The bottom plate should be made of zinc, not of harmful lead. To make sure, rub the plate against a piece of white paper; grey traces show the presence of lead. • White candles burn more steadily and exude more scent while the pigments in the coloured ones make the wax denser thus affecting the evenness of its flame. • The best wicks are made of cotton. • Wider candles rarely burn through. When these have more than one wick make sure they are not too close to one another. • Inexpensive candles often contain harmful chemicals that can cause allergies and sickness. Good quality wax, scents, and wicks make a candle burn longer and steadier, without burning a crater in the top part, without smoke, and the wick stays straight and central. The scent keeps going throughout the whole time of burning, up to 60 hours.
Rules of Use • Trim the wick regularly but only after the candle has cooled off. The length of the wick should stay at a 5-millimetre length to make sure the flame is not too high and there is no smoke. • If the wick has shifted from the centre it can be set straight with a pair of tweezers while the wax is still warm and liquid. • No matter what you see in the movies, aromatic candles on the dinner table do not combine well with food aromas. If you insist on having a candlelit dinner, use unscented candles. And now that you know all these little secrets, relax and enjoy.

ENJOY YOUR RENOVATIONS! (by Antonina, a professional designer) To make your renovation project enjoyable you need to be really willing to change something in your living space. Once you have made this decision chase away all the thoughts about the interruptions to your normal existence and living amid the dust and disorder that comes with the process. Remember – these small nuisances are temporary while the result will make you happy for years to come. It doesn’t mean that you have to rush into a decision – let it mature in your mind and prepare yourself mentally for something new and exciting. The second component of your success is to choose the right team that will put your plan into action. The easiest way is to ask your friends and relatives who have already gone through their own renovations. Looking at the scope of work done and prices do not forget to make sure they have done a quality job. Checking classifieds in your favourite newspaper is another customary way to look for workers. Do not be fooled by low prices, make sure the estimate includes

The Hallway Being a reflection of the kind of home a person is entering is not the only role of the entry hall. One of the most important functions of this, often insignificant, space is that it helps you mentally prepare to leave the house because most of us look in the mirror before stepping out. If we are happy with the way we look at that moment it defines our mood and our readiness to to embrace the world awaiting beyond. Nevertheless, answering the perpetual “Who’s the fairest of them all?” question is not the only role your hallway mirror plays. It can also serve to visually alter the room’s proportions as well as being a decorative accent.
Mirror
There are quite a few ways to make a small entry hall look more spacious, the most popular being a mirrored door of the hall closet built into the longer wall. If the closet has an accordion door, installing mirrors into every other section makes its design more interesting. For the hallways without built-in closets the role of the space enhancer can be allotted to a tall mirror on the wall, especially if hung in such a way that it reflects, fully or partially, a room or installed on a turn of a long corridor. Reflecting more than just the opposite wall serves to the visual effect of a larger space. Even better, when mirrors reflect, fully or in part, a window, it will add light to the space while reflected plants on the windowsill, beauty. Mirror facets not only send colourful sparkles into the darker space but also serve to visually enhance the space. Horizontal wall mirrors make a short wall of the entrance hall look wider and enhance the look of the furniture next to it. They usually have a very simple frame or none at all, thus fitting into any decorative style, from frivolous to classic. Vertical wall mirrors allow you to see yourself from head to toe – an indispensable function for a hallway mirror. A little secret well known to clothing store designers: a mirror tilted towards you will make you look slimmer. Enjoy your hallway mirror and your reflection in it!

HOW MANY POTS AND PANS DOES YOUR KITCHEN NEED? What is the optional number of pots and pans in the kitchen so that you are not inconvenienced by their shortage but your cabinets are not overloaded with unwanted extras? The most popular kitchen set usually consists of five pots, one large skillet, and lids to fit them. Prices vary depending on the make, manufacturing country, and material. So, buying a standard kitchen set you will get: A large stockpot. For a busy woman (and practically every women, be it a homemaker, a career person, or a self-employed owner of a small business, has her hands full from morning till night) cooking soup for just one meal is not practical. Therefore, preparing a 3-4-litre pot of soup to last for a couple of days is a viable solution. Two 2-litre pots. They are great for cooking side dishes or warming up that very soup for just one meal instead of warming up all the soup in the large pot over and over again.

against the walls. In cheaper models you will definitely notice some slits in between – use wax paper to cover them and save your oven from spills. A small one-handle pot is indispensible for the family with small children, to cook single servings of hot cereals and mashed potatoes, or boil eggs. A large covered skillet is essential for more serious chefs who sauté and fry often.
Think about a piece or two of ceramic or non-stick bake ware. Non-stick kitchen wares should be high quality lest you have to get rid of them after a few months of use because the Teflon coating peels off of inexpensive pots and pans in a jiffy.
Besides the standard set, you would be happy with one or two smaller frying pans for crepes or omelets for one and a Dutch oven for sautéing dishes on the stovetop or baking them in the oven. For more accomplished cooks ramekins are recommended – buy the number corresponding to your family size.
As far as materials go, try to avoid aluminum or enameled kitchenware – the former is harmful to your health, especially if you want to keep the dish in the same pot it has been cooked; the latter is good until the first chip that will start off the avalanche of peeled enamel. In families with small children kitchenware is more susceptible to damage, so go for stainless steel pots and pans with thick and heavy bottom – they stay attractive for many years and are user-friendly.
If you need bake ware for cakes purchase a spring form. Make sure the bottom is flush

Thelia Sanders Shelton is a Toronto -based artist. She is currently immersed in two ongoing series of works. The Movement of the Masses series is a mixed media series of drawings based on the unique visual forms that occur when a group of organisms form a community. The Myth series of paintings is loosely inspired by Greek and Roman mythology. These brightly coloured acrylic paintings pay subtle homage to the artist’s Iberian heritage and her long love affair with Picasso. Thelia will be showing her work at this year’s Riverdale Art Walk, Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition and The Queen West Art Crawl.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT “My images operate on both the physical and metaphorical levels. Since the mid 70’s my photobased art has pushed the envelope technically and visually, often going beyond the “traditional” depiction of subjects, I play with what is real and what seems real but isn’t; the visionary and the transformative re-presenting the world and inviting us to see otherwise.

I specialize in a ground breaking cutting edge new medium called photobased digital painting. Most people have never seen it before outside of the USA. Neither traditional photography alone nor traditional painting alone can achieve what is visually possible through the combination of digital photography and digital painting,. a form of digital mixed media. This new medium seemed simple on the surface when I first discovered it , yet is proving unendingly complex , with huge potential as I get more experience with it. I find it very exciting and love the opportunity of evolving a new medium, along with the challenge of educating the public about it and being a “pioneer” in a new art form.” While I sometimes use my existing photos as sources, I am now more often making new photographs and photo-montages with the end result in mind, while allowing myself the freedom to evolve the image intuitively as I go along, my right and left brains working in consort. In fact, I find I am seeing, thinking and photographing differently as time goes on. My work is presented as limited editions, printed on canvas.” Collections:

Roof shingles are typically flat rectangular shapes that can be made of various materials such as wood, slate, asbestos-cement, bitumen-soaked paper covered with aggregate (asphalt shingle), composite, or ceramic. It comes in different shapes – hexagonal, rectangle, diamond, etc. Shingle manufacturers use decorative granules to offers a wide range of colours that allows the roof to blend with the colour scheme of the house and its surroundings.
The top layer of these shingles is surfaced with mineral granules that lend colour to the tiles and ensure high UV- protection and weather-resistance qualities. The granules are cured in high temperature (pigment burned-in into the surface of granules) which guarantees durability of the colour.
The new word in the world of shingles are bituminous and bituminous flexible shingles manufactured from a material the base of which consists of glass-fibre felt, impregnated and covered with bitumen and modified bitumen bulk from both sides. The top layer of a flexible shingle is covered with crushed basalt that provides the colour and protects the bitumen from UV rays and mechanical damages. Flexible shingles designed for pitched roofs of sophisticated configurations and forms (pitch from 12°) are used in residential, industrial and other purpose buildings and constructions.

The bottom of shingles is coated with adhesive polymer-reinforced bitumen layer protected with easily removed silicon membrane. As a result of sun heat exposure the overlapped tiles stick to each other thus forming a double waterproofing layer, which guarantees excellent leak resistance of the roof. Among the advantages of flexible shingles are the following:
- Thicker and more flexible at low temperatures - Resistant against extreme weather conditions - Maximum durability backed up by a full platinum guarantee - Ideal for complicated roofs and reroofing - Extremely economical with the minimum of waste - Lighter than the traditional kind thus

excluding the need for the reinforcement of the supporting structure of the roof, the building, and the foundation - For the same reason, its delivery to the place of installation is more economical - Has higher insulating qualities against extreme temperatures and sounds - Is not subject to rotting or corrosion - Higher resistance to moss and lichen - Resistant to critical temperature changes as well as high winds. All this is proof that, should you be in need of reroofing, flexible shingles are ideal for a number of reasons. Not only will they provide you with high quality defence against the elements but rid you of unnecessary problems during installation and operation.

Lutron RadioRA 2 Home Control System By Darryl Wilkinson •
http://www.hometheater.com/content/lutron-radiora-2-home-control-system
History in the Making Lutron has a storied 50-year history in the lighting-control business. In fact, Lutron’s founder, Joel Spira, invented the first dimming device in 1959. (That original dimmer and his notebooks are now in the Smithsonian Museum.) Even knowing all that history, I’m still astounded by how good the RadioRA 2 system is. It looks good. It’s easy to use. And in the months that I’ve been working on, tinkering with, and adding to the RadioRA 2 system, it has refused to let the bad wireless mojo that permeates my house affect its performance. I still think that a lighting-control system involving helper monkeys and Oompa-Loompas would be a great thing to have for big parties or smaller gettogethers with friends. But I know it wouldn’t always work consistently or in a preplanned manner—much like the hodgepodges I’ve tried to cram together in the past. The RadioRA 2 system has everything I’ve been looking for, and I was able to install it in my home with virtually no modifications. At this point, I know I haven’t taken advantage of all that the RadioRA

2 system has to offer. (In truth, I may not actually be worthy of a system this good.) Unfortunately, you’re not going to be able to put in a RadioRA 2 system on the cheap. But what it will do for you in terms of changing the way you live in your home will far outshine the amount of money you spend.
room is unoccupied (up to 16 percent or more on heating/cooling costs), and smart energysaving programming features, such as easily accessed room or wholehouse All Off buttons, and you can bet it won’t be long before a very curious utility company inspector visits your house to make sure you haven’t been tampering with the meter.
Dim Sum
Nationally, lighting control really pays off. Lutron estimates that in 2008 alone, the company’s lighting-control products helped save $1 billion in energy costs, reducing the U.S. lighting bill by 3 percent. Oh, one more set of numbers to throw at you: It’s much more economical to conserve electricity with dimmers than to build more generating capacity. Lutron estimates that it costs 35 cents to save 1 watt of electricity with a dimmer. Published industry estimates suggest that it costs anywhere from $1.40 to $7.75 to build 1 watt of electrical-generating capacity. And so far, there’s never been an environmental lawsuit stopping someone from installing dimmers in their home. (At least I don’t think so.)— DW
Lighting control saves money—big time. Lutron calculates that dimming a bulb by 25 percent uses 20 percent less energy and helps the bulb last longer, too. But dimming is just part of the picture. Occupancy sensors that turn the lights on or off when you enter or exit a room can save up to 20 percent in energy usage, as well. Throw in automated shade/drapery control (from 10- to 30-percent savings on heating/cooling costs), system-controlled Plug-in Appliance Modules (up to 10 percent electricity savings), thermostats that set back the temperature when a

ARCHED NICHES
Arch wall niches have been around for ages, since Greek and Roman times. Wall niches are a wonderful way to display photographs, sculptures, collectibles, or any other piece you feel like showing off. Thanks to modern technologies and cheaper materials, anyone can have an arched niche installed by an experienced master. For practical uses you need a deeper niche, but even a faux niche, 3 to 5 cm in depth, contoured by a decorative moulding or boasting nice interior accents will make your whole decor look much more sophisticated. The soft radial lines of an arched niche will emphasize the superior taste of the homeowner while spectacular finishes and lighting will draw attention to it. The space inside the niche can be used for stressing the individuality of the decor; since all its elements are created to order you can make your arched niche unique. Therefore, you can kill two birds with one stone by acquiring an exclusive decor element at a very reasonable cost. Nevertheless, the

process requires some preparation on your part. • Remember that both the installer and the painter will charge you for the whole job, not per a linear metre; • If you plan to illuminate your niche, ask an electrician to give you an estimate before the installer starts working; • If you plan to fit the niche with shelves, discuss the wait they will need to carry with the installer so that he reinforces the points marked on the blueprints; • For a large niche where you plan to place your library, equipment, or a fireplace, make sure the dimensions are compatible. For items made to order ask the manufacturing company for a visit of a professional measurer; • If you intend to decorate with wallpaper or a ready-made mural take into consideration the height of the niche from the top radial point and the need to cut the design on a curve without damaging the integrity of the piece; • If the arched niche you are planning is not an independent element but rather part of a complicated composition, be realistic in evaluating your designing abilities. Should you doubt them turn to a professional interior designer for help.
