A Letter to Our Readers

Find something you love and let it kill you. – Kinky Friedman

Publish a fine natural magazine and have to come up with a hundred-eighty some odd (some very odd) words to kick it off, every month, and you rely a lot on holidays.

April is a gold mine this year.

You got your 4/20, a horse with no other name, to celebrate all things cannabis. Easter Sunday is April 21, time to make your annual church visit, tell kids rabbits hide eggs and watch them eat sugar until they pass out, and contemplate the nature of resurrections. On Earth Day, April 22, instead of feeling good about yourself by asking for no plastic straw in the restaurant water you’ll probably waste, contemplate modern environmental resurrections that could change a lot of things – which brings you right back to 4/20 and the resurrection of hemp and cannabis as money-makers. If you’re still in the holiday spirit come April 26, raise something you love in a toast to the eighty-sixth birthday of Willie Hugh Nelson, who celebrates 4/20 most every day. – Michael Abedin

I WANT TO TRY CBD by Barrett Smith

Y

our grandmother’s friend at the nursing home raves about it. Your buddy who served two tours overseas swears by it. Your massage therapist uses it, and your neighbor’s dog finally stopped barking because the CBD treats are working. It’s your turn to find out how CBD can benefit your health, but you don’t know where to start. Before you jump online and order the first thing that pops up on Google, there are some things you should know. Forbes magazine has predicted the CBD industry to grow to $16 billion by 2025, others are predicting even more even sooner. If you think every Tom, Dick, and Harry wanting to make a buck isn’t rushing to get into the industry, you’re sadly mistaken. CBD is being extracted, formulated, and bottled everywhere from giant industrial warehouses to one-car garages. Obviously, not all CBD is created equal, so how do you make sure you’re buying a quality product? The first thing to do is to research the company making the product. Look to see how long they’ve been in business. Are they a company that invests in research and development of their product, or are they a multi-level sales business opportunity for people with great social media skills? Do they overcompensate for having an inferior product by having a catchy name or label? Do they pander to a particular crowd, hoping that demographic will carry their brand? If so, you’re most likely buying a product developed for no other reason than profitability. Ask to see a Certificate of Analysis from a third party. This will tell you exactly what’s in the product you’re considering. Make sure the contents of the bottle are exactly what’s listed on the bottle. If a COA can’t be produced, move along. All reputable sellers have COA’s. Buy somewhere that specializes in CBD. The kid at the smoke shop in the Bob Marley shirt probably isn’t your guy. Make sure whomever you buy from can thoroughly answer any questions you have. You’re making a choice about your health, and anyone suggesting a product should be well versed in it.

Where do I start? Ask about the bioavailability of the product. This is how much of each dose will actually be processed in your body. The industry standard is less than thirty percent. A few products exceed ninety percent using processes like nanoing to increase bioavailability. 300 mg. of properly formulated CBD is better for you than 1500 mg. of an inferior product, and you’ll likely spend about a third as much money on it. Be wary of expensive products with giant dosages. Finally, do your research. After all, it’s your health you’re talking about. Read online reviews. Search the companies’ histories. It’s important to know that many online CBD ranking sites are pay-to-play advertising services, so go deeper than that. An hour of online research can save you a lot of time and money – and what’s better to invest your time and effort in than yourself? GREEN$ It’s 10 pm. Do you know where your children are? – Public Service Announcement, 1960s and 1970s

Well – do you?

Of course you do – they’re on their phones, getting in trouble on unsocial media instead of going out somewhere to do it, like in the good ol’ stoner days of the Sixties and Seventies. If you were a parent in 1971 in San Rafael (Ra-FELL, sort of the California equivalent of GWAD-a-loop), you probably didn’t know where they were at 4:20pm, especially if they were part of a group of five high-schoolers called the Waldos – because (duh) they hung out by a wall outside the school. 4:20 was the time they met in a local park by a pretty bizarre statue of Louis Pasteur to discuss plans to search out a mythical abandoned field of mind-blowing weed, based on, yep – a treasure map. They never found it. It’s doubtful they even made it out of the park every time, since the first order of business was to get in the right frame of mind by burning a couple of fat ones. 4:20 Louis, the code word to rendezvous, eventually became simply 4:20 – and when one of them went on to become a roadie for the Grateful Dead, the rest was, umm… was… what were we talking about, dude?

4/20.

Oh yeah, right – history. As far the history of how 4:20 became 4/20, and April 20 became a day of celebration and protest by indulging in a little adult-use cannabis (as some states refer to recreational weed), there isn’t much. Record keeping isn’t always a high priority when you’re high, and, uh… dude, are those chips? I’m starving. It doesn’t however, reefer (sorry, refer) to Bob Marley’s birthday (February 6) or, most likely, to the most infamous personage born on that date – Adolph Hitler, who was said to be more of a meth fancier.

8

The real deal.

Skipping from 4/20 to 4/22, it’s worth noting a few things about the Earth whose day is being celebrated. If we continue on our wasteful ways and she’s finally done with us, she’ll shake us off like fleas on a dog, heal up for a million years or so, and wait to see what crawls, swims, or flies its way out of the primordial ooze next, or who decides to land for repairs and stick around for awhile. In the meantime, it’s nice to recycle, it’s great to eat organic, and it’s heartening to see Monsanto in court, but when it comes to change, the bottom line is still – well, the bottom line. The Green New Deal is a political hot potato, but it’s already underway. Green is the color of cannabis sativa, and the color of money. Cannabis in the form of hemp products, legal to sell in every state, is already generating big bucks in the CBD industry. Its bad seed relative, marijuana, will soon be legalized for adults in Canada, and at least one North Carolina tobacco company is gearing up to supply them, along with more and more of the Un-tied States primed to let folks legally roll another one, just like the other one. Rumor has it large chunks of land have already been purchased around Austin, ready to grow hemp or THC-bearing cannabis when laws allow, and many CBD shops probably wouldn’t object to becoming licensed medical cannabis dispensaries. Even in Texas, things can change. There are already more people gainfully employed in the U.S. in the cannabis industry, directly or indirectly, than there are in tech, craft breweries, or as dental hygienists – and change in this country, for better or worse, follows the green.

April foolishness.

Enough of economics. Here’s a fun April Fool thing to do – spread the rumor that 4:20 is a biblical thing, and accompany it with the modernized text of Mark 4:20. Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop – some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown. Selah.

5 ESSENTIAL EARTH DAY CRYSTALS by Adrienne Goff

E

arth Day, April 22, is an invitation to become more conscious of your connection to and impact upon Mother Earth, a call to respect and care for this planet, taking deliberate steps to leave lighter environmental footprints. Our planet is literally made of jewels, and connecting with gemstones is a powerful way to open your heart to Gaia’s beauty and consciousness. Here are five crystals to help attune to Earth and become a better planetary steward, Earth Day and every day. Aragonite. Brown Aragonite Star Clusters are must-have tools if you feel called to heal the planet and Earth energy grid. They transmute geopathic stress – energy disturbances from power lines, underground water, pipes, sewers, and fault lines, which can disrupt health. If you sense blockages in specific ley lines and areas of the Earth grid, placing Aragonite there can restore a positive flow. It’s a grounding stone, attuning

you to Earth, influencing you to recycle and preserve natural resources. Kambaba Jasper. Remarkable green and black Jasper containing some of the most ancient stromatolite fossils on Earth, three billion years old, created by cyanobacteria, a form of blue-green algae that helped to form oxygen and the atmosphere. Kambaba Jasper supports and heals our lungs, and the lungs of the planet – the forests. It assists with plant growth and general fertility. Meditating with Kambaba Jasper attunes you to earliest Earth records and energies, the original Earth blueprint, moving you into harmony with planetary cycles. Preseli Bluestone. Brought from Wales to create Stonehenge and other sacred stone circles in the region. It has a unique electromagnetic charge powerfully anchoring you to Earth’s core, helping stabilize you during Earth changes, anchoring you to the Galactic center so you receive and ground higher frequencies into your body and planetary grid system. Preseli Bluestone sharpens abilities to find and feel Earth ley lines, opening dimensional doorways in power spots and vortexes and giving access to ancient knowledge and mystical energy. Preseli Bluestone strengthens the energetic current running through ley lines. Working with it enhances your attunement to crystals, herbs, and natural remedies, upgrading your psychic senses and shamanic abilities. Green Apophyllite. A high vibration stone, a doorway to nature’s realm, enabling you to sense natural vortexes and power spots and see and connect with nature spirits, elementals, fairies, and commune with Mother Earth herself, as well as plants and other crystals. Green Apophyllite infuses creation with vitalizing energy, encouraging growth and blooming – perfect for gardening. It has cleansing effects on the environment, helping purify toxins and pollution wherever it’s placed. Rainforest Jasper. If you’ve become apathetic about Earth and environmental issues, Rainforest Jasper can rekindle your connection and determination to save the planet. It raises awareness, helping you see and feel interconnectedness with all creatures, plants, minerals, and elements of our beautiful world. It helps you disconnect from technology and plug back into nature, becoming more grounded, nourished, and engaged with life, with a greater sense of responsibility and motivation to do your part in preserving nature. Rainforest Jasper carries healing, rejuvenating vibrations bringing body and emotions into greater balance. Used in Earth healing rituals and connecting with nature spirits, it also balances humidity levels in the environment. Happy Earth Day! Let’s do our part to love, honor, and protect our beautiful Mother Earth. THE CBD COUNTERCULTURE W

hat do you get when you cross the vibe of a San Francisco head shop with an Amsterdam coffeehouse? Lazy days? Close. Try lazy daze, put it together as LazyDaze Counterculture, and put it in Pflugerville instead of the Bay area or by the River Amstel and its dam. Think counterculture and you immediately think Sixties, long hair, peace symbols, sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll – and you couldn’t come up with a better example. A counterculture is a sub-culture that develops when enough people start questioning or rebelling against the values of prevailing cultural norms, and create a culture of their very own.

Deadhead stickers on a Cadillac.

Eventually, it becomes part of the mainstream, you start seeing Deadhead stickers on a Cadillac – and that’s how things change. CBD is a subculture changing things really fast. It’s only been a few years since Texas DPS agents barged into a local health-oriented business and pulled every CBD product from the shelves. It was promptly returned, because it wasn’t illegal – and it still isn’t, as long as it has less than 0.3% psychoactive THC. The CBD counterculture is driven partially by people who are sick, anxious, in pain, and tired of dealing with the products of a pharmaceutical industry manufacturing things like psoriasis medication that mentions death as a possible side effect. (Welcome to the Pearly Gates, I’m St. Peter, and – say, that psoriasis cleared right up, didn’t it?) With those folks on one end, and on the other end Hollywood actresses using it on their feet to be able to wear four-inch heels on the red carpet, CBD isn’t going away. It’s generating big money (as are its delinquent cousins, medical and recreational marijuana) and that’s something mainstream culture respects.

So is coffee.

A counterculture appreciates a good cup of coffee on the counter. LazyDaze serves Austin’s Cool Beans Coffee, to sip while you hang with friends or chill on your own, or to take home and brew yourself (created by the world’s only blind Master Coffee Roaster), along with carefully-curated CBD products, glassware, and vape supplies. A counterculture is usually fought then embraced by the culture it’s countering. The CBD culture is now being welcomed with open arms. It’s the best kind of revolution, one that slips in quietly – and stays. LazyDaze Counterculture, veteran owned and operated CBD Café, coffee, CBD, good vibes. 1202 FM 685, Pflugerville. THE HEMP CHRONICLES by Michael Abedin

W

hat can make biofuel, rope, paper, cloth, biodegradable plastic, concrete, cars, ice cream, cosmetics, flour, feed and bed down livestock, clean up wastewater, soil, oil spills, and nuclear disaster sites, kill other weeds, polish wood, make powerful over-the-counter medications virtually free of side effects – and make a lot of money? The answer? Hemp. Not bad for a weed, huh? Up until recently, however, there was just one little problem.

There was a bad seed in in the family.

Hemp has a next of kin with a criminal record, illegal in the U.S., except in some states, except federal law still considers it illegal, except if you have glaucoma – or something along those lines. Products made from industrial hemp, including CBD, have been perfectly legal to sell in all fifty states – but only legal to grow in a handful of them until December 2018. Confused? Welcome to the club. So were a lot of growers, manufacturers, and distributors waiting to cash in on a crop that could change the economic structure of American agriculture, except it was being held up by hemp’s resemblance to its reprobate relative. We’re talking here, of course, about pot, boo, gage, ganja, reefer, Mary Jane (hssssssssst) – marijuana. (Whooooossshhh…) Both hemp and marijuana are members of the Cannabis Sativa family, but marijuana has that extra something special. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC to its friends) is the psychotropic ingredient in marijuana, the part that gets you stoned. Industrial hemp has little or no THC, usually 0.3% or less, which make it legal to grow and to use for CBD production.

Barney Fife and inbreeding.

12

One of the biggest arguments against legalizing and encouraging industrial hemp growing on national and state levels was that hemp fields could be used as a way to camouflage pot fields, since hemp plants grow much higher than marijuana plants. In technical legal terms, that’s pretty much a crock. It might be a legitimate concern if you were sending Barney Fife out on surveillance missions with a Kodak Brownie and his bullet in his pocket, but like other failed wars, the War on Drugs has generated some really sophisticated hardware – and a lot of bucks. Drug property seizures are a major source of income for local law enforcement, and seminars are taught about how to do it right. Most industrial hemp growers don’t want that kind of risk – and it doesn’t make good business sense for them, or for marijuana growers, to try the camouflage thing. Like cousins marrying cousins, hemp growers don’t want their plants crossbreeding with marijuana plants and putting all their growing power into THC-laden buds instead of fibrous stalks and leaves, and pot growers don’t want their babies to grow up to be part hemp, with lower THC levels.

McConnell, Hatch, and LDS.

Mitch McConnell, the ultraconservative Senate Majority Leader from Kentucky, played a big role in passing the 2018 Farm Bill in December of last year, legalizing hemp growing under federal law – not out of any altruistic reasons, but because he’s up for re-election in 2020 (when hemp sales are expected to hit $20 billion), and Kentucky is one of the primo hempgrowing regions in the world. Farmers who used to grow tobacco, its previous big-money crop that’s falling out of favor, are voters – and they want to grow hemp. Something similar happened in 1994, when the Funded by Drugs Administration (FDA) made some noise about regulating dietary supplements as drugs. Orrin Hatch, another archconservative who retired in January 2019 as the longest-serving member of the U.S. Senate from Utah at the age of about two hundred, pretty much saved the supplement industry from FDA regulation – largely because some of the top supplement companies at the time were based in Utah. Hatch, btw, served seven consecutive terms (after campaigning on a platform that included term limits), breaking the record set by Utah Senator Reed Smoot, best known as co-sponsor of an act increasing tariffs, which fueled pre-World War II nationalism and helped trigger the Great Depression. Smoot was also an apostle of the LDS (Later Day Saints, aka Mormon) Church and part of its governing body, The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, said to serve as seers, prophets, and polygamy apologists. And they say pot makes you crazy.

Dear South Dakota: Thanks! Love, Bunky.

It’s doubtful the new governor of South Dakota (who’s proposing legislation to protect the next stage of the Keystone oil pipeline from Native American and other protestors) lit up a blunt before she vetoed a bill in March legalizing industrial hemp production in her state, citing in part the looks like pot argument.

Next door in Wyoming, though, Republican state Rep. Bunky Loucks (yep, Bunky), who sponsored a hemp legalization bill recently signed there, sent her a big ol’ Wyoming thank you in advance via the Rapid City Journal. “Tell her I hope she vetoes it, because that would be good for Wyoming.” And that’s how progress gets made – a buck (and a Bunky) at a time.

Reefer Madness.

You’d think we’d be a little looser, since cannabis law in this country dates back to the first American colony in 1609, when King James his own self issued a decree requiring each Jamestown colonist to maintain one hundred hemp plants for export as fiber. The sails on the ships making landfall at what became Jamestown, in fact, were probably canvas made from hemp. (The etymological roots of canvas are the same as cannabis.) George Washington even grew hemp as one his main cash crops. What went awry? Fast forward from 1609 to 1930, when alcohol prohibition ended and a giant enforcement apparatus suddenly found itself with nothing to enforce. Its new head honcho, Henry Anslinger, mounted a campaign to get the Demon Weed to take the place of the Demon Rum and its cousins. Anslinger was aided and abetted by newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, an early perpetrator of Rupert Murdoch-style faux news and rabid sensationalism who almost singlehandedly started the Spanish-American War. His yellow journalism rags were printed on paper made from wood pulp – an industry threatened, then and now, by industrial hemp. The result, accompanied by hilarious propaganda films of good kids getting their first whiff of reefer and turning into sex-crazed addicts almost on the spot, was all forms of THCcontaining and non THC-containing cannabis getting classified in the same Schedule 1 category of dangerous drugs with opium and heroin (first synthesized by Bayer, which now owns Monsanto).

Red-Headed Strangers and Frankenpot.

As far as hemp production goes, states can still override the feds, and forty-one of them are now allowing some form of hemp cultivation, including not only Utah but Arizona, Oregon, and North Carolina – three states where a publicly traded moneymaking machine by the name of Hemp, Inc. has been quietly setting up tens of thousands of square feet of growing, processing, and educational centers over the last decade or so (including an Eco-Village) with plans to use hemp to revive the agricultural industry in Puerto Rico. Texas, of course, is one of nine holdout states on legalized hemp growing, even though the sale of both hemp and CBD products is legal, as long as they’re below the magic 0.3% level of THC. It will probably remain a holdout for some time in spite of continuing proposed legislation, even though it’s the home of a Red-Headed Stranger said to be raking in more bucks from his proprietary strain of marihuana (as the feds still spell it) than he does from his music. Willie Nelson (who turns eighty-six April 26 and is still pickin’ and grinnin’) has summed up the dangers of pot pretty succinctly. “It won’t kill you unless you let a bale of it fall on you.” If they look up from their phones long enough to reproduce, the offspring of millennials will almost certainly be buying packs of machine-rolled reefers and get-you-high gummy bears from convenience stores as easily as they get CBD now. Hopefully, it won’t have been grown from strains of GM Frankenpot seeds patented by Monsanto. In the meantime, the good ol’ American entrepreneurial spirit that once drove stoners to break down a pound into a few lids for resale, just to keep a stash on hand, could make industrial hemp production in every state grow like – well, you know. Like a weed.

n the midst of the CBD/hemp boom, another plant hasn’t gotten as much publicity. Kratom (mitragyna speciosa) is a large tree growing in Southeast Asia, particularly in Indonesia, used by indigenous people in those regions for centuries. Kratom has over twenty-four alkaloids and can be a stimulant or a sedative, depending on dosage and whether it’s of the red, green, or white variety. It can be taken steeped as a tea, in capsules, as straight powder, or mixed with your beverage of choice. In traditional cultures, the dried leaves are chewed, pretty much like coca leaves. Like coca, the combination of those twenty-four alkaloids means its stimulant and relaxing effects will be balanced (unlike when a single alkaloid is isolated). The unofficial science behind it says it acts like an opiate on the human brain – unofficial, because there aren’t many real clinical studies. There are, however, reports of kratom being used to help people get off opiates by getting them through withdrawal symptoms. It’s also said to help with insomnia, depression, sexual dysfunction, lack of energy, high blood pressure, IBS, and as a pain-killer, among others.

Are there side effects?

Unlike CBD, kratom has psychotropic properties. The main side effect has been drowsiness – probably best not to have a big ol’ cup of kratom tea on your way to, say, a job site where you’re operating earth-moving machinery. Like other powerful botanicals, the main problems occur when kratom is mixed with substances like alcohol, or stimulant or depressant drugs – or when the If a little is good, a lot must be better, and a whole lot must be really, really good syndrome kicks in. Powerful botanicals should be used with care and common sense, or they’ll be legislated into illegality – which brings up another question.

Is it legal?

In most states, including Texas, yes, although many places require buyers to be at least eighteen. Indigenous cultures hand down the knowledge of plant medicine, and respect for it. Most of us don’t live in an indigenous culture any more, though, and don’t have access to that knowledge, so it’s important to purchase botanicals from reputable sources that can give you professional guidance. Oh, and btw – it’s pronounced KRAY-tuhm. Kratom is available, along with CBD products and kava, at White Dragon Botanicals, 7304 Burnet Rd., around back. No claims made to cure or diagnose – you know the rest. (512) 887-0247, www.WhiteDragonBotanicals.com

a very different understanding of our health. It takes into consideration the fact our genes are designed around a lifestyle that makes up 99.75% of our genetic past – a huner-gatherer lifestyle. Our genes have scarcely changed in that last 0.25 percent of our history, when we developed agriculture. Present-day hunter-gatherers don’t develop heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, obesity, allergy, asthma, or irritable bowel disease. The modern medical model today really has no way to ask some important questions about disease. When modern medicine seeks an answer to the cause of a disease, it typically pulls out a microscope to examine cells and subcellular structures. It then looks for chemical reactions that may have caused the microscopic changes seen. If it finds a chemical reaction that appears to cause the disease, it then looks for a way to alter or stop the chemical reaction from happening – usually leading to the development of a drug.

What an insult.

In reality, and obvious in an evolutionary medicine mindset, what appears to be the cause of the disease is often the body’s natural response to some insult. Cholesterol, for example, is a very powerful antioxidant, so high cholesterol may be the body’s response to toxins. It might also be because of a lack of omega-3 oil, since cholesterol improves cell membrane fluidity. Evolutionary medicine would first ask, Is this disease or its prevalence new in human history? If it is – and the majority of them are – the more reasonable approach is to ask, What are we doing that’s different, to bring about this recent change in our health? Simply put, if this is a new problem for humanity – what are we doing to cause it? Answering this question provides us with a pathway not only to prevent the disease in the first place, but, typically, to find a non-drug focused strategy to reverse it. Evolutionary medicine’s approach to health – finding what we’re now doing now that’s different, causing the development of disease – puts the control

of your health back in your own hands. This is superior to modern medicine’s approach, which goes something like this. You have this problem, caused by this disease, therefore you get this pill.

If you were living in the Garden of Eden…

Living, in other words, in the environment from which your genes came, they could handle stresses encountered in that environment. Some genes provide more reserve capacity to handle certain stresses, but all of them can handle the stresses encountered in that environment, and work fine there. Come out of that environment into today’s world – where some of those genes may be required to handle ten, twenty, even a hundred times more stress – and some of them can’t handle the excess.

Against the grain.

Evolutionary medicine looks at the history of osteoporosis, for instance, and sees its development and spread is exactly concurrent with the development of agriculture – the growing of grains. Grains have several direct effects on bone development, binding up magnesium and preventing it from being absorbed across the intestinal wall. If you can’t absorb magnesium, you can’t absorb calcium – the intestinal wall gives back some magnesium to absorb calcium, in a revolving door mechanism. Also, grains are acidic and the kidneys have to get rid of excess acid intake. The kidneys cannot handle a pH lower than five, so when urine pH gets close to that, the kidneys start buffering it with calcium. (Most hunter-gatherer diets produce a urine pH above six, so there’s no loss of calcium.) A very simple way to prevent bone loss is to eat more alkalinizing foods, like vegetables and fruit, and reduce acidic foods, like grains, beans, potatoes, and dairy products – which are very acidic.

The bottom line?

Evolutionary medicine is a way to bring medicine back down to Earth, and treat us like human beings. Granted, this approach does not help the pharmaceutical industry – but it’s a hell of a lot smarter and cheaper, and allows us to regain the health we once had.

finding that quality of life with partners, children, maybe even parents. The end of the day means home.

Home is the great landing place.

Home may be a house in a subdivision with amenities that suit you and your family, or a downtown condo where you relax a bit before venturing out for an evening meal and a stroll along Lady Bird Lake, taking in sights and smells that refresh you at the end of another day. If you apply logic and reason at work to reach successful conclusions, maximize goals, and meet deadlines, why can’t you have that same level of success at home? What would that look like? When emotions, feelings, come into play – an escalating discussion, a tired, cranky child – tensions rise. When family issues require a lot of dissection or thought, both partners need to feel heard.

Digest that. Both partners need to feel heard.

It’s a truism boys get their self-worth from their mothers, and girls get their self-worth from their fathers. Hopefully your childhood was a happy one – fishing with dad, baking with mom, traveling with both – and you feel balanced as a person. We all experienced family tensions, but we understand them now, and vow not to let them deter us from being loving in our own family relationships as husband and wife, parents and children. Bringing a topic up for discussion, though, isn’t always easy. Most partners weren’t childhood neighbors, and came from different ways of thinking and different parts of the country. Family harmony is a rather old-fashioned term, but harmony in partnerships is imperative to successful family relationships. When a hot-button topic comes up unexpectedly and you’re caught off guard, take a deep breath. Suggest to your partner the topic deserves thorough thought, and a bit of time, to result in the best solution for all.

This is the way to find your voice.

The point is to keep form being blindsided, defenseless. The way to prevent that is to take charge and suggest a time lapse, giving both adults in the room a chance to digest the implications, benefits, and detriments of the endgame decision. In family partnerships, we attract people who don’t think as we do. (How boring, ending up with a mirror image of yourself.) We crave adventure and excitement, but above all else we want to be happy and loved – and we choose the best partner at the time. Practice, practice, practice as piano teachers say. Find your voice, even in routine matters. Soon you’ll be the master of self, able to find your voice in any situation. Dephanie Cates is a licensed Realtor and Reconnective Healing practitioner, and became a Personal and Business Coach by applying the skills and experience she acquired helping clients find their voice in negotiations and transactions. Bet the

f you’ve been to the races, you’ve heard of betting the trifecta. Pick three horses to win in the right order, and you win big. There’s a trifecta of three natural healing energies – far infrared rays, negative ions, and amethyst crystals. You don’t have to pick the order, but when they work synergistically, you stand to win big in health. Far infrared rays. The most beneficial invisible light spectrum from the Sun. Think how awesome you feel after gray days, and next day it’s sunny. NASA researched far infrared decades ago to keep astronauts healthy, and hospital neonatal units use it to keep babies warm. It’s proven to expand and relax the circulatory system, increasing efficient blood flow, bioavailability of nutrients and oxygen, and metabolic processes. Increased circulation and permeability of vessels and capillaries makes toxins more available for removal. Negative ions. They’re abundant in nature – forests, mountains, waterfalls, oceans, the energy in the air after it rains. Walking on the beach, you’re flooded with negative ions. Negative ions, anions, are atoms with a greater number of electrons (–) than protons (+), creating a negative charge. Positive ions are found in polluted cities, crowded areas, and confined spaces – imagine the low energy of an office with dim fluorescent lighting. Your body craves negative ions – they’re believed to produce biochemical reactions affecting serotonin oxidation rates, resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness, and more mental energy. Crystals. Studied and used for thousands of years, each is said to have unique healing properties. Amethyst, a Master Crystal, is conductive quartz crystal in light purple to deep lavender, believed to strengthen immunity, cleanse organs, increase hormone production, and tune the endocrine system and metabolism.

Trifecta

Through the resonance effect, a synergistic combination of far infrared rays, negative ions, and conductivity of amethyst crystal can penetrate your body four to six inches. When cells feel that energy, mitochondria begin creating ATP (Adenosine TriPhosphate, your power source) and the activity heats up your cells. Your brain sends a signal to increase blood circulation to cool down your body, and wastes from the cellular activity are metabolized through blood vessels.

And the winner is…

You – and it doesn’t matter which horse comes in first.

Heaven

Bringing

to Earth

by Christina Allen

Most of us were raised by being rewarded for good

behavior, and punished for bad. This is how we learned right from wrong. As children there were usually adults to steer us, someone who executed a parental interest in our outcome. Through their guidance, we internalized a sense of morality.

And then we became adults.

In most cultures, religion becomes the guiding hand once we leave the nest. We’re taught early our deeds will be judged and recorded by some unseen force. In the traditional JudeoChristian perspective we go to heaven or hell, depending upon how we behaved. (Are you a sheep, or a goat?) In more Eastern traditions, the law of karma keeps us in line – bad deeds in this lifetime are paid for in the next. What’s interesting in both perspectives is there’s a reward system for behaving properly, but it’s based on judgments from an external source, and only pays off once we die. The Andean prophesies say there will be a day when the Upper World and the Lower World will meet, in the Middle World. This will be Heaven on Earth. While the different worlds are places in their system of belief, much as in ours, they also represent our personal psyches. The prophecies speak of a time when the unconscious of the Lower World and the higher conscious of the Upper World are both collectively owned and integrated. Our everyday Middle World will then have reached its highest state of human potential. When we can own both the motivations of our darkness and the light of our divinity, we will be able to walk our talk and speak our truths, effectively. We will then have refined ourselves enough from the inside to be congruent with what created us. We won’t have to go to a higher dimension for this, nor an external authority. We create it here, and are rewarded while still in form. By contrast, our current culture’s focus on being rewarded by an external God in the afterlife (or lives to come) is a more parental approach that pushes us into paradigms of judgment and separation, instead of integration. The fear of judgment has the unfortunate consequence of spiraling us into self-

18

loathing, encouraging us to hide what we’re ashamed of, rather than inspiring us to dig inside and look.

True perfection seems imperfect. (Lao-tzu, in the Tao Te Ching)

When we must appear good, we put things in shadow instead of working through ownership of them. This creates a deep shame that grinds away at our sense of self and accentuates a state of perfection we can never truly posses, and defines divinity as something outside ourselves. What if we choose, instead, to reckon with our darknesses, and become congruent with the God within us? We’re taught to override our emotions and intuition, disregard the signals of the body, and to choose rationality instead. If you tell a lie, you feel your throat clench up, your eyes twitch, you may feel edgy, or heavy. This is direct feedback that an inconsistency lives within you. In closing down these internal systems in favor of the mind, however, we give away our personal authority. The more we defer to the mind as master, the more we pave over our internal moral compasses, creating separation, confusion, and a shame that appeals to external sources for salvation. We are hard-wired to know right from wrong. Instead of thinking of ourselves as children who need to be parented, or sheep who must be led, we can tune inward, claim our own authority, and behave from a place motivated by personal integrity. Why wait for Judgment Day when we, as a collective, can bring Heaven to Earth now? Christina Allen, Shamanic Healer, teacher, founder and director of the Austin Shamanic Center, combines a strong science background (BA Physics, MS Neuroscience) with decades of applied ancient spiritual wisdom as a Master Yogi, Reiki Master, and Shamanic Healer, based, in part, on Q’ero Indian traditions of Peru. Dear Ashtara:

Messages from Your Angels and Master Teachers Dear Ashtara, Where is my Guru? Kecia, 25, Austin, TX Dear Kecia, Your highest master teacher from the other side happens to be Hilarion, next, Sananda (high self of Jesus). Your oldest guru is Melchizedek. Highest angel is Archangel Uriel, the prince in your life. Your mission is to become a writer/author. We always say, a writer writes it down and an author gets it published. Seems like you have been channeling for at least eight years. You will write some books and publish them – spiritual ones, of course. Good job. Don’t wait until you are thirty. Begin to become an author now! Your course is easy. Dear Ashtara, Do you see a love relationship for me this year? Gypsy Heart, 50, Austin, TX Dear Gypsy Heart, Become pro-active! Join some meet-up groups, as well as getting on Match.com and SpiritualMeet.com. You will probably find someone you fall for. Staying at home and seeing the same people most of the time makes it difficult. I will say that Luck is always on your side. You have earned the Universe Supplying You from this day forward. Treat it like a job – meaning, when you wake up, begin to imagine the two of you together. Fix an extra plate for him when you take your meals. Know he is there. Today is a day of Re-Birth of the Devout and Devoted. More than ever before, we, the light, are on Earth to assist those without partners to finally have one. Count yourself in! Lord Sandalfon is taking over in this department, Gabriel, too. They love and adore you. Call on Luck every day. She is waiting for you, our angel, princess, and galactic goddess. Dear Ashtara, Am I supposed to write a book? Ginger, 49, Georgetown, TX Dear Ginger, You were born to be an artist – piano, instruments, guitar, songwriter, singer, composer. Perhaps you got lucky and studied some of those, but if you didn’t, the talent is dormant. However it can be amped up as soon as you start. Writing is an enormous part of artistry, even flower arranging, gardening, or decorating. In your life

20

you will write three books. Getting them published is another thing unless you self-publish, which is easy. Get started by beginning to channel and tune in. See what happens. Archangel Gabriel wants to write the books through you. His color is royal purple. Get his picture and frame him. He will come alive within you. Your highest teacher is Lord Sandalfon, and Uriel is your Archangel of the highest. Be at one. Dear Ashtara, How do I connect to my higher self? I know we connect all the time, but I don’t remember. Sarah, 62, Dallas, TX Dear Sarah, Thank you for such a very profound question. • Tune in every day. Some people call it going within. However you do it, it will work. • Your highest teacher, presently, is Lord Sandalfon, next, Lord Maitreya. Always try to find out who they are. Get their pictures and frame them. They enjoy gold-colored frames compared to silver or wood. Create a small altar with them. Kneel before it two times a day, if possible. Lay on the floor in front of it, and they will heal your body, if needed. You will also begin to receive messages. • We call talking to God praying, listening for messages, meditation. Going to your altar is a Newer Paradigm of receivership. Thus, healing takes place, as well. • Lay on the floor, a flat surface, so the MasterShip can enter. After that, embodiment may take over. If it does, God and others announce that it is the final step. Submit your question for ‘Dear Ashtara’ via email: Ashtara@SashaWhite.com or call (512) 278-0559 and give your question (up to 30 words) with name or nickname, age, city, and state. Private Sessions can be scheduled (in person or by phone). Questions answered and more. Ashtara Sasha White is a gifted psychic, profound healer, and channel from the Ascended Masters/Archangels. She is also a Reiki Master Teacher, Seichim Reiki Master Teacher, Sound Current Healing Master Teacher, Embodiment Master Teacher, and Teacher of the Light. Join her group on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30PM. See her events at www.AshtaraSashaWhite.com.

BACH Flower Remedies

Spring Cleaning and Bach Flower Remedies by Dr. Matthew Carpenter, DDS, NMD

I

By Michael Abedin In the 1930’s, English physician Edward Bach created a series of thirty-six flower remedies, from plants in his native England, to address underlying mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of physical disease. (Educational purposes only, not intended to diagnose, blah blah.)

t would be nice if you could toss disease-causing bacteria in your mouth into a blue bin and have it hauled away for someone else to deal with – but, sorry, it isn’t that easy. If you have a pretty simple dental history with routine cleanings, no gum surgery, and minimal decay and repairs, though, it’s relatively easy to keep the ecosystem of your teeth and gums healthy and balanced with a few key tools. Essential botanical oils. Not all essential oils are created equal. Transcend Dental Health carries a blend of peppermint, spearmint, and almond oil to kill harmful bacteria and promote oral health. OraMD makes a blend with peppermint oil aged for three months to increase the potency of its antimicrobial, antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties. Apparently, it works – it was shown to be effective against twenty-two bacterial strains in laboratory studies. Spearmint, a potent antibacterial agent, has antiinflammatory, antiseptic, and anti-spasmodic properties. This blend is a good entry-level intro to essential oils for oral health, and can be used as liquid toothpaste, mouthwash, breath freshener, to clean dental inserts, and help with chronic bad breath. Baking soda. Sodium bicarbonate is abrasive, so Dr. Tim Rainey created a less-abrasive baking soda tooth powder called Common Sense. It alkalizes the pH of the oral cavity to fight bacteria, supports tooth re-mineralization, contains xylitol (shown in research to reduce Streptococcus Mutans, the bacteria associated with tooth decay), and provides bioavailable minerals like calcium and phosphate. pH paper. Monitoring salivary pH associated with foods, drinks, and dental products helps you understand how lifestyle affects the pH of your mouth, and can be used for urinary and salivary journaling for systemic monitoring and diagnosis. Toothbrush and floss. Brush at least twice daily, or after eating if you really want to prevent gum disease. Floss daily – within 48 hours, plaque and biofilm buildup begins causing tissue inflammation and eventual bleeding. Some products claim to eliminate the need for floss, but it’s critical. Transcend Dental Health has a specialized line of toothbrushes, developed by a dentist, and floss.

ot all caught up in the spirit of Earth Day and cleaning up the environment, and decided to do a little springcleaning? Best way to get to the dust and grime between the coils is to take an old toothbrush and – what? Oh, not that kind of spring? Spring cleaning, without a hyphen. Got it. Ahem… If you’re spring cleaning your house, body, or both, a Bach Flower Remedy workup can help get old stuff unstuck. Walnut. A good base remedy for helping you through transitions, for being ready to move forward, but just not being able to get started. A link-breaker, protection from outside influences pulling you back in. Crab Apple. Feeling icky, messy, and cluttered, both internally and externally. It helps you get over being so caught up trying to get every last little square inch of one thing spotless (whether your kitchen, brain, or colon), that you don’t really make any progress. Gentian. For feeling completely discouraged and frustrated by any minor setback, giving you a good excuse to throw up your hands and abandon the whole project. From there, you can add remedies for any emotions that even the idea of spring-cleaning brings up – sadness (when you decide to throw out those old significant other pics), anger (when you decide to smash them with a hammer and set them on fire), guilt (after you’ve done all that there) – whatever. The artistry is in finding just the right synergistic blend of remedies for short-term and long-term issues, and using them for a period of time. You can buy remedies separately, but those first three alone will set you back a chunk of change. You’re better off finding a consultant to help you choose a combination of remedies and make up your own affordable, personalized thirty-day blend.

Dr. Matthew Carpenter of Transcend Dental Health is an Integrative Biologic Dentist and Board Certified Naturopathic Physician offering ozone therapy, natural oral care products, drill-free air abrasion, non-surgical gum disease treatment, safe mercury and root canal removal, and natural heavy metal elimination.
