A Letter to Our Readers
So many times, it happens too fast You trade your passion for glory Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past You must fight just to keep them alive – Survivor, Eye of the Tiger
Okay, it’s a corny Eighties anthem, written as the theme song for Rocky III after Queen wouldn’t let Sly Stallone use Another One Bites the Dust. It got an Academy Award Nomination, though, and it’s fun to work out to.
But it’s about fighting.
Yeah, and so’s the movie. Rocky gets ticked off at Mr. T, loses his cool, his trainer, and his title, but comes back low and slow to regain his championship, with help from his former rival, Apollo Creed. C’mon, you gotta love it, especially now. If you or someone close to you hasn’t taken a hit lately – illness, injury, divorce, someone checking out – well, maybe you just haven’t been getting out enough. Shake it off, get your game face on, and sing along – you know you want to. It’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight…

FACES To react with anger is a sign of weakness. To act with ferocity is a sign of strength. – Old Cherokee proverb
A
ctually, that old Cherokee proverb was made up on the spot, to get a running start on the June intro to a fine natural magazine. It still counts, though, seeing as how it was, indeed, made up by a card-carrying member of the Cherokee tribe of Oklahoma, one who is, indeed, kinda – um, kinda… Let’s just skip that part, and call it simply a Cherokee proverb, in a not age-specific sort of way. Seeing as how it’s a lead-in to a cover image of a tiger, and the only time a really old Cherokee would have seen a tiger would have been in a zoo (they’re not exactly native to North America), it probably would have been better to make it an old Chinese proverb – but that would have wasted a perfectly good opportunity to burn up almost twothirds of the word count for column one, when you start out not having the slightest idea what you’re going to say about tigers and faces and such.
And that’s how it’s done.
Seeing what goes into creating the face of a magazine isn’t nearly as gruesome as seeing what goes into sausage or politics, now is it? The Cherokee connection isn’t as random as it seems, since politics is pretty much what sealed their fate, leading them to the Trail of Tears in 1838. The idea of large organized tribes in Native American culture isn’t completely accurate – in most cases, there were small autonomous bands within a tribal group, based on family ties and geographical location and such, and they didn’t always agree on everything. In the case of the Cherokee and their cousins the Shawnee, one of the things they didn’t agree on was how to deal with the paleface invasion.
6
Here’s where it gets familiar.
The newly minted United Snakes government played different Cherokee and Shawnee bands and factions against each other like dueling banjos, switching faces back and forth between different chiefs and holy men to get them distracted fighting among themselves. Sound familiar, in an election year? Anger is now the coin of the realm, along with all its ugly henchmen – jealousy, revenge, pointless violence, and crazy prophets who just love to keep the pot boiling. It can be a powerful, life-saving tool, but it’s a double-edged sword that can cut you back, and anyone who starts swinging it wildly to make amends for some imagined (or manufactured) affront is reacting out of the weakness – and the stupidity – of the easily manipulated.
You can’t manipulate a tiger.
Not for long, anyway. Just ask Siegfried and Roy. The tiger is the archetype of strength, male energy, the colors of summer sun and shadow. The power of the tiger is its patience, its ability to remain calm, and act (not react) without hesitation when it’s time. Good qualities to emulate right about now. There’s plenty to be angry about – the smirking faces of those whose only talent is to turn people against each other by rousing them to anger, the fear and hopelessness in the faces of those on the receiving end of all the worst human emotions, coming out to play again, the cowardice of social media trolls. When ugliness runs through the collective like a toxic chemical sludge, take a good look at your face in the mirror, and make sure sludge isn’t staring back. You don’t want to see mad, don’t want to see a smiley face if you don’t feel it – you want to see the face of someone you trust to have your back. You don’t see a tiger getting mad. In fact, you most likely don’t see a tiger at all – until it’s too late.

THE THOUSAND YARD STARE CBD, PTSD, and Veterans by Michael Abedin
I
n September 1944, U.S. Marines landed on the rugged South Pacific island of Peleliu in a campaign expected to take about four days. It took two months, and the lives of thousands of American soldiers and Marines. El Paso native Tom Lea was a war correspondent and artist covering the battle. In 1945, Life magazine published his chillingly intense painting of a Marine with the hollow-eyed, detached stare of someone who’s endured far more than a human mind and body should. Lea titled it Marines Call It That 2,000 Yard Stare, and thousand-yard stare entered the lexicon as the face of something once called shell shock or battle fatigue, now known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Like ADHD, it’s a term casually tossed around these days, a disservice to those who’ve had truly soul-searing experiences that can revisit any time, day or night – victims of violence, first responders, cops, and, especially, military vets. Combat isn’t the only impetus for nightmares, flashbacks, anger, anxiety, depression, guilt, or detachment, not to mention physical disabilities like fatigue, migraines, or the effects of wounds or injuries. Training regimens designed to hone a razor’s edge of preparedness have their own set of pitfalls, as does the daily personal stress of non-combat service. Modern soldiers have also dealt with a host of neurotoxins far beyond their brothers and sisters of a few generations ago, from Agent Orange, to uranium-enriched armor and ammo, to virtually useless injections against chemical warfare.
There’s one thing ingrained into everyone who’s served.
Never abandon a comrade, never leave behind a brother or sister-in-arms needing help. By many accounts, though, the Pentagon has done more to cover up epidemics of PTSD than help soldiers suffering from it. That puts it back into the hands of vets to help one another, and CBD has become the Holy Grail for many of them dealing with physical and mental symptoms of PTSD, and often with the monkey of opioid and antidepressant dependency on their backs. It’s no surprise, then, that many of the first big waves of CBD businesses are veteran owned and operated. Visiting those businesses is a show of support for vets beyond flag waving on the Fourth of July, and it has an added benefit for customers – a discipline, integrity, and dedication seldom seen in the cookie-cutter world of big-box businesses.

SUMMER SOLSTICE CRYSTAL MEDITATION by Adrienne Goff
T
he summer solstice, June 21, marks the longest day of the year, a time of maximum light. The sun’s yearly progress represents the journey of enlightenment, peaking on this day as light triumphs over dark – a time to focus on ascension, integration, wholeness, spiritual awakening. Summer Solstice honors the Divine Masculine, represented by solar energies – strength, action, manifestation, walking your talk, shining your light into the world with confidence. It’s the gateway into the season of fun and life in full bloom, of picnics, fireworks, social gatherings, vacations, celebration. Work with these crystals to align yourself with summer solstice energies, amplifying your light. Rutilated Quartz. The perfect stone for connecting with solstice themes – enlightenment, spiritual awakening, and manifestation. Rutile is titanium oxide crystal that looks like brown, gold, silver, or red needles. Found inside amplifying Quartz, it creates the effect of antennas, channels of connection to multidimensional realms, beings, or potential timelines. It delivers higher energy streams into etheric, third eye, and crown chakras, grounding higher frequencies into your cells and the planet for spiritual activation and
enhancement of psychic gifts, especially channeling, meditation, and healing. Rutilated Quartz is a powerful manifestation stone, helping pull in potential realities best for you, and a vibrational healer, vitalizing the aura and removing negative energy, blockages, anxiety, fear, and other energetic constrictions. Titanium (Flame Aura) Quartz. A captivating crystal created by placing Quartz in a chamber with titanium and other metal oxides in vapor form, which bond to the surface, creating a dazzling color display in a metallic rainbow. Titanium is masculine metal, resonating with power, action, higher consciousness, integration. Bonding it to Quartz amplifies these qualities. Titanium Quartz brings out your dynamic personality. It boosts your wit and sense of humor, making you the life of the party, helping you relax and enjoy life. It connects with frequencies of the rainbow and the pure bliss of the higher realms, and assists with multidimensional shifts and attunement. Highly energizing to the physical and subtle bodies and all the chakras, Titanium Quartz brings you into a grounded, clear, balanced, energized state, perfect for taking on the world. Sunstone. Connects with solar energy and charismatic traits of the Divine Masculine – warmth, generosity, confidence. It enhances positive leadership, helping you be comfortable stepping into a role of greater responsibility, using knowledge for the highest good. A stone of manifestation and blessings, bringing in positive synchronicities and assistance in moving forward, Sunstone brings a sense of freedom, fun, and adventure into life, relationships, and creative pursuits, burning away lower feelings keeping you from being your authentic self. Sunstone helps you shine and radiate your gifts for the benefit of all. Summer Solstice Crystal Meditation. Cleanse the three stones. Place Rutilated Quartz over the third eye (center of forehead) to bring in higher frequencies for spiritual attunement and psychic activation. Place Titanium Quartz over the heart chakra (center of chest) assisting in moving it into a joyful, light-hearted space, bringing in multidimensional energy and full rainbow spectrum of light. Place Sunstone at the solar plexus chakra (a few inches above the belly button). This activates, clears, and empowers the solar plexus so you can manifest your visions and radiate your light into the world. Relax, breathe, and meditate with these stones for at least fifteen minutes, visualizing positive things you want to manifest this summer. The ancient art of Chinese Face Reading
by Sherron Hughes
W
hat if you could determine what was most important to the person you just met, or how your new client makes decisions, just by looking at their face? Cool, huh? Chinese Face Reading has been used for centuries in China and around the world to help everyone from the Emperor to government officials, from military generals to matchmakers, understand and communicate more effectively with others. It’s an ancient art and science that some Chinese scholars say dates back three thousand years, and some say as far back as five thousand years. According to Henning Hai Lee Yang, a Mian Xiang (Face Reading) expert, the first Face Reading school is said to have been established around 481 B.C.E.
Generals, emperors, and monks.
There are many accounts of how it originated, but the most popular is that an Emperor wanted to know which general to send into battle to ensure he retained power. The Taoist monks and ancient scholars started making observations and inventories of faces, documenting that similar facial features correlated with similar personality traits and character. They also noticed that when certain skin colorations were present on specific areas of the face, health issues could be identified. At that time, the ancient doctors and practitioners started using Face Reading to diagnose. This was very helpful, since male doctors were not allowed to touch their female patients. Until then, doctors had used a statue for women to point to parts of the body where they were experiencing problems.

Today Face Reading is still used in Chinese Medicine, and is catching on in Western Medicine as well. It can be used by all holistic practitioners, not only to understand their client’s needs better, but also to identify health issues. However, unless one is a licensed medical professional, Face Reading cannot be used for diagnosis, but only to point to the possibility of health issues. It’s used in business by managers to hire the right person for the job duties, employees to understand co-workers better, and by sales professionals to establish rapport more quickly with customers and clients.
Doing without doing.
Face Reading is a tool that can identify your own strengths, talents, and abilities. (Yes, they can be identified on your face.) The Chinese believe that to be on your Golden Path – to fulfill your life purpose – your best, unique qualities must be used, mainly in your life work. When they are, the Chinese call it wu wei, doing without doing. When you’re doing what you love, work doesn’t seem like work. What if you could know the meaning of your unique face print for a more fulfilling life, or if you could understand your spouse, children, mother-in-law or boss better at a glance? Would you feel empowered? What if you could communicate with your clients or customers in their language to create more stickiness – more repeat business? Would that make a difference in your life and theirs? Every face tells a story. What’s yours? Sherron Hughes, MCFR, is certified in Nutrition, NLP, Hypnotherapy, Coaching, Reiki, and Reflexology, and discovered Face Reading twenty years ago through an attorney who used it for jury selection. For personal consultations or classes, call (210) 749-1732, or visit www.JadeInst.com Sherron is Chapter President of the newly formed Holistic Chamber of Commerce for San Antonio-Alamo Heights, a business and marketing support group for holistic practitioners and businesspeople. alamo@holisticchamberofcommerce.com or www.HolisticChamberofCommerce.com/alamo

ou meet the mysterious Chinese girl at a waterfront dive, follow her down a dark alley, past opium dens and gambling halls to a dimly lit doorway. You ask the artist, an old one-legged sailor, for one that looks like her, and one of a fine three-masted clipper ship. You follow her back into the night, and something crashes into the back of your skull. You wake to the sound of waves, and wind in the rigging. She’s gone, and so is all your money, and you’re on a threemasted clipper, bound for the East China Sea with a cargo of tea and opium. You’ve been…
Shanghaied!
But you have a pair of damn fine tattoos. That was one way, once upon a time, to get yourself inked, along with being a Maori, a Mayan, or a mercenary. Times have changed, and tattoos are everywhere – roll up the sleeve of an investment banker’s white button-down shirt, and you’re likely to find a full sleeve of ink. Tattoos are magical, exotic, ancient as time and modern as tomorrow – iconic images speaking of far off places from ages ago, lifetimes unknown. Tattooing is the oldest art form, preceding even the oldest known cave paintings, a link to our tribal past. The history of tattooing was an oral history until the last century, when the first books were published. When Charles Darwin explored the world, pursuing the origin of species, he discovered every culture he encountered had four things in common. They all sang, danced, dressed up for special occasions – and they all tattooed.
The art that art history forgot.
Tattooing was banned across the Roman Empire by Pope Constantine in the third century AD, remaining forbidden for about fifteen hundred years. It returned to the forefront when explorers like Captain James Cook brought it back from the Pacific islands to British aristocracy and Commander Perry opened Japan to the West. In British parlors, the flame of tattooing was rekindled – it’s well documented that early twentieth century royalty were tattooed. Tattooing and body art has come of age, the voice of freedom and self-expression for a new era, an outward

statement of an inward desire. This is my body and it’s a temple – and I’ll decorate it how I choose. From days of old, worn as badges of honor by servicemen and sailors, tattoos are now popular product placements in photo ads and reality shows, showing they’re truly art – and anything is possible.
Tattoos, however, aren’t for everyone.
Shanghai Kate Hellenbrand has never bonked anyone over the head, stolen their money, or had a shop in Shanghai, but she’s been tattooing almost fifty years, working with such greats as Sailor Jerry Collins and Don Ed Hardy. Known as America’s Tattoo Godmother, she’s tattooed celebs like Howard Stern and members of Pearl Jam and been featured in documentaries like Tattoo Nation, and she and her husband operate Shanghai Kate’s in Austin – and she has some advice. “There’s and old saying in the industry – everybody gets the tattoo they deserve. Good tattoos aren’t cheap, and cheap tattoos aren’t good. Don’t settle for anything less than the best.” Shanghai Kate’s, 4405 Guadalupe. By appointment, (512) 551-3573. MERCURY REMOVAL
There’s a right and a wrong way. by Dr. Matthew Carpenter, DDS, NMD
So you’ve decided it’s time to get the mercury out of
your mouth by removing all those old amalgam fillings, some of which may have been hanging around since childhood? Congratulations. That’s a wise decision. Be very careful how you go about it, though. Simply having them drilled out, rinsing, and spitting can turn a wise decision into one that can make you sick. At Transcend Dental Health, we utilize the Huggins Protocol when removing mercury fillings or other poisonous metals – the safest, most effective, most highly researched dental protocol for physically removing mercury fillings or other metal-based restorations from the oral cavity. Dr. Huggins was the first dentist to have the courage to raise concerns, very vocally, about the dangers of putting a potent neurotoxin into your mouth, and was ahead of the culture when he developed the protocol more than two decades ago. Its main points include: Offering the dentist, patient, and dental assistant multiple types of protection from the hazards of exposure to mercury and other poisonous metals during the appointment. Incorporating considerations for physical and energetic (or electrical) aspects of safe removal and recovery. Offering IV antioxidant therapy to support and boost the immune system, during and after poisonous metal removal.
Jumpstarting your health.
Based on his research, we also believe a proper Huggins dental revision many times represents the key factor necessary in jumpstarting a patient’s healing from chronic illness. The body can’t begin to excrete metals while you’re still being exposed to mercury fillings and other metal-based dental restorations in your mouth. Removing them unsafely, however, can expose you to billions of mercury, nickel, and aluminum atoms, which have been linked in research to cancer, Alzheimer’s, and many different autoimmune and chronic illnesses. I’ve met many patients who have struggled for years with issues related to having mercury fillings removed unsafely. Scattering millions of metal fragments through the body is not an easy task to reverse, especially for someone who’s already chronically ill and struggling with detoxification. Many chronically ill patients look to the dental revision as a last-ditch hope. When done improperly, their health problems, unfortunately, are often worsened. We offer patients dietary and supplement recommendations for preparing their bodies for their dental revision to remove metals, as well as immediate and long-term strategies for the healthy release or chelation of these toxic metals from organs and tissues.
14
Before and after.
Because our bodies work energetically, we employ high-quality herbal and energetic drainage formulas that prepare your body (or optimize its ability) to excrete poisons naturally before metal fillings or crowns are removed, then provide researched supplementation to optimize your bodies continued release of metals after your dental revision appointment. This approach gets behind the body’s innate healing intelligence, resulting in a gentler process with a more effective outcome. Ideally, supplementation starts two to four weeks prior to metal removal, a general recommendation based on a patient having done some work on diet and gut health. Ideally, we want to know the patient is having regular, daily bowel movements for the month prior to starting this protocol. If not, and they’re still eating a standard American fast-food diet, it might require more than four weeks to make lifestyle changes necessary for improved gut health. We provide Bowel Basics (a real page-turner) and other written recommendations for gut health to be initiated one month prior to removal – the use and importance of probiotics, digestive enzymes, fermented foods, correct food combining and quality, ideal water intake and quality. For simplicity, we’ve broken the protocol into two main sections – preparing the body, and supporting the body. Preparing happens the month before your fillings are removed, and includes core concepts like strengthening your immune system, improving drainage or toxin excretion, and the binding of metals. Supporting the body happens for two months after your dental work is completed. It takes a little planning, but healthy elimination and good follow-up are critical steps to a more predictable and successful recovery from metal poisoning. Dr. Matthew Carpenter of Transcend Dental Health is an Integrative Biologic Dentist and Board Certified Naturopathic Physician offering ozone therapy, natural oral care products incorporating essential oils, drill-free air abrasion, non-surgical gum disease treatment, safe mercury and root canal removal, and natural heavy metal elimination. Visit the website or ask for a naturopathic consultation regarding Preconditioning for Mercury Metal Removal. (512) 255-3618, www.tdhtx.com

You create a mandala, of course, and no matter what wonders you have swirling around within its orbit, it focuses on one point. In Sanskrit, that point is the bindu – the center. If you and your partner are artists, entrepreneurs, meditators, designers, sound engineers, contractors, world travellers, musicians, and have logged lots of hours floating in isolation tanks – how do the two of you go about creating a sacred space encompassing spiritual growth, meditation, action, stillness, and transition? Start (where else) in South Austin, in the heart of 78704, and focus on one point – the center.
professional recording studios, so you can hear people speaking and not outside noise, and for sound healing classes and sessions. • Adjustable lighting, draped ceilings, and the same calm, Zen-like, Zero Gravity vibe. “We wanted to build and design a space,” Kevin explains, “where you’re not challenged by your environment.”

Zero Gravity.
Kevin and Carol Johnson spent the summer of 2013 with tool bags strapped around their waists, designing and building a floatation center that went beyond state of the art, based on what they learned floating all over the world on tour as musicians. An old laundromat on Manchaca Rd. off South Lamar was already plumbed, ready for Kevin’s original tank design. ‘I realized I’d never seen exactly what I wanted, and would have to design it myself.” His design remedied one reason a lot of people won’t float – claustrophobia. Zero Gravity Institute has tanks big enough to stand up and dance in.
Build a float center, add water.
Build an educational and meeting center, add anything you like. Holistic practitioners and classes, fitness and movement, cutting-edge speakers and seminars by local and national presenters, best-selling authors – anything you can imagine, from ethnobotany to psychedelia to metaphysics. Because of high real estate prices, Austin has a dearth of quality meeting spaces that aren’t cavernous, sterile hotel ballrooms, especially ones owner-designed and operated to give anyone attending in-house classes or renting program space a smooth, professional, experience – a centered experience – without having to drive all over town. All that, and free off-street parking. Zero Gravity Institute and Zero Gravity Center. For float sessions, class programs, and event rentals, call (512) 707-1191, or visit www.ZeroGravityInstitute.com
You won’t want to, though.
Filled with twelve inches of super-purified water and over twelve hundred pounds of clinical-grade Epsom salt, you couldn’t sink if you tried. After fifteen minutes in a high-tech massage chair, draped in a cushy robe, you’re checked into a private room with a shower. When you’re ready, you enter the tank. Ambient lighting and calming music fades. You’re in total darkness, total silence, completely weightless. No electronics, interruptions, or stress. Blood pressure lowers, muscles relax, endorphins and delta brain waves kick in – for an hour, or longer if you like. Massage therapists and Reiki practitioners are available for sessions before and after a float – what more could you want? More sacred space, of course, maybe right next door. Once again, it focuses on one point.
The Center.
When the twenty-one hundred square foot fitness facility next to Zero Gravity moved out, Zero Gravity moved in, creating a large, open classroom and event center featuring: • A wall of mirrors for movement classes – T’ai Chi, yoga, Qigong – along with natural bamboo flooring over a flexible base. • High-tech walls acoustically on a par with

STEP UP AND STEP OUT
Feeling down? Help someone else up.
by Dephanie Cates
W
e celebrated Mother’s Day last month, and Father’s Day is in June. Most of us with children, I hope, had them reach out in a loving gesture, even if they live miles or continents away. The main thing a parent needs is contact, to feel whole and loved. A reach out can be as simple as a text, or as personal as a phone call or a get together. In any event, a child’s task on a day like Mother’s Day or Father’s Day (or any day) is to be thoughtful in some way, to show appreciation for their upbringing and their parents’ support.
We’re in the human condition.
There were (and are) no guarantees about your life. Your parents, without a crystal ball, brought you into this world with the highest hopes about who you’d look like, be like, and inherit the smarts of – and hoped you’d grow up to be someone the world admires. Look to the animal kingdom– chimpanzee families, bear dens, birds. Parenting is a loving, uncompromising ritual in the animal world, because it’s in their DNA to grow their numbers.

A young mind and body, eager to grow and become part of the parents’ world, needs all the loving support and guidance any parent can muster. When children become parents they, too, bear the responsibility of paying it forward, guiding and encouraging their young children with family chores and family play, teaching them to become self-reliant decision-makers holding productive places in society. Regardless of DNA, in the human condition there are times of despair and feeling low, when you think, why do I feel this way? Why can’t I shake it off? No one cares if I’m sad or feeling unappreciated. Jobs, marriage, friends’ problems, aging parents – each day, we face challenges that can trip us up or throw us off guard, creating new concerns to embrace. One way to ward off feeling down? Reach out to everyone you encounter for the next week, acknowledging something about them you haven’t noticed before. Forcing yourself to be thoughtful( with a smile) goes a long way toward perking you up.
You’re stronger than you believe, capable of much more than you think.
Some situations are beyond your control, so acceptance is another way of overcoming down feelings. Accept the fact life’s not always a bowl of cherries. You’ll have troubling moments and times to wade through, but think of your family history, and the struggles families have endured over time. Did you have an industrious grandmother who influenced you in your upbringing, an uncle who served in a war and came home to share stories? Reach out to them, even if they’re departed. When you step up, step out, and brighten the day of someone else who’s not feeling their best, you brighten your own day. What goes around comes around – you’ll be rewarded, time after time. This is an important coaching tool, and an important business tool. Being civil, helpful, and cheerful can take a lot of the stress out a tricky business transaction. Ask any realtor, a profession that’s as much about coaching as anything. A good realtor, like a good coach, is one who knows exactly when to step up – and step out – for a client. Dephanie Cates is a licensed Realtor and Reconnective Healing practitioner, and became a Personal and Business Coach by applying the skills and experience she acquired helping clients through negotiations and transactions. UNITY AND DIVERSITY UCOH, Your Whole Life, and the Queen of Everything
Quick quiz. Sex education is:
A. Made up on the spot as you go along, hoping you won’t get caught – or, as they say, in trouble.
B. Ask your father. C. Ask your mother. D. All of the above, and none of the above.
The correct answer?
D, of course. For generation after generation, teaching kids about sex has been a hot-button topic (so to speak), especially as our culture shifted from agrarian to urban – you pretty much can’t not learn about it at an early age if you’re raised on a farm. When most everybody stopped living around and caring for farm animals on a daily basis, nothing really stepped in to fill the – umm, to take its place – least of all schools and, heaven forbid, churches. Unity Churches have a different outlook than most, however, being open to embracing diverse points of view, and one of their new summer spirit camp programs reflects their dedication to diversity.
The 2019 Your Whole Life Spirit Camp.
Your Whole Life is a first-time educational summer spirit camp at Unity Church of the Hills (UCOH) in northwest Austin, based on the OWL (Our Whole Lives) Curriculum of responsible sexuality and emotional health for young people. While OWL was developed jointly by the Unitarian Universalist and United Church of Christ, it’s a secular program with no religious references or doctrine. The UCOH Your Whole Life curriculum is a custom version of OWL, offering accurate information and activities presented in age-appropriate and development-appropriate ways in a safe, supportive peer group. All UCOH facilitators are trained, with step-by-step instructions for program promotion and implementation, and the program includes a parent orientation, affirming parents as their children’s primary sexuality educators. While not religious, it’s not value-free, emphasizing self worth, sexual health and responsibility, and social justice and inclusivity. Sounds dull on paper, but past OWL participants who are now adults remember it as being entertaining and fun – which is the best way to learn anything. Because attitudes toward sexuality go hand-in-hand with social attitudes (not at their best these days), the custom-designed camp has been expanded to include socialemotional intelligence programs, anti-bullying techniques, and stress management, all with a spiritual focus. The program is open to all, not just Unity members.
2019 YOUR WHOLE LIFE SPIRIT CAMP SCHEDULE June 24-28: Grades K-2 and Grades 3-5 (Separate age-group curricula) July 22-26: Grades 6-8 and Grades 9-12 (Separate age-group curricula) 9am-12pm daily. Registration deadline one week before class.
The Queen of Everything.
There are two kinds of people in Austin’s holistic and metaphysical community – those who have been to an event at Unity Church of the Hills, and those that probably will some day. From local presenters like Holographic Sound teacher and crystal bowl maestro Paul Hubbert to national speakers like Dr. Joe Dispenza, Gregg Braden, and Dr. Sue Morter, you have one person to thank for developing and organizing UCOH events – Ellen Fannin, aka The Queen of Everything. The Queen is retiring June 2, after seventeen years of service to UCOH. That may not seem like a long reign compared to, say, sixty-seven years for Queen Elizabeth II, but when you’re being the left-brain organizer for decidedly rightbrain holistic and spiritual folk, those tend to turn into dog years – or, as one event producer put it, herding cat years. After a June 2 sendoff shindig at Unity, the Queen plans to travel and indulge her passion for collecting jewelry. If you want to send her best wishes or a thank you gift (hint – see collecting jewelry), contact UCOH. Unity Church of the Hills is an open-minded, accepting spiritual community honoring and welcoming all paths to God, emphasizing the practical, everyday application of spiritual principles to living a more abundant, meaningful life. Regular meetings include AA and other recovery programs, A Couse in Miracles study groups, labyrinth walks, yoga, Tai Chi, Weight Watchers, and Pranic Healing and other holistic practices. It’s also home to Austin’s only Metaphysical and New Thought bookstore, where Austin All Natural readers receive 20% off any single purchase. 9905 Anderson Mill Rd. (512) 335-4449. Bookstore hours, Sun. 9am-2pm, Tues.-Fri. 9am-5pm. www.UnityHills.org

EXPANSION. INTEGRATION. CONTRACTION. (Rinse and repeat)
by Christina Allen
W
e set out for most destinations hoping to reach them directly, without inconvenience. On our spiritual journeys, however, we climb many steep aspirational mountains, hack through tangled interpersonal jungles, and descend down into the depths of our internal fog-laden valleys, before we finally find the peace we are looking for. The spiritual journey is not actually one of destination so much as it is a painstaking iterative process of refinement, the rugged but delicate unfolding of mighty wings, the pure evolution of the soul. For those of us in a time crunch, it seems to take an eternity.
But that’s just it – the soul knows not the limits of space and time. In fact, many believe that’s why we take form, to learn from the causality of the three-dimensional world. If there are no walls to bang into, no feelings to hurt, how will we develop the strengths it takes to evolve? This is a path where we realize the expansiveness of our divinity, within the limits of our humanity. In our expansive moments we open up and all is possible. We see where we’ve hobbled ourselves. We see our fears for what they are, simply phantoms rattling the chains of ancient thought – the fears of our ancestors, our culture, and thoughts we put in place as children to feel safe. As we start to see through them and dismantle our defensiveness, all is good, all is forgiven. We are divine light – we’ve finally come home.
It all feels so good – until it all happens again.
Some event in this crazy world comes knocking at our door. We tighten and recoil, collapsing down into worry and strife again. And there we wallow, twisting and contorting, worrying, strategizing with our agendas and our tactics, until finally another opportunity for expansion occurs and we remember who we are, as an essence, and that this can’t be destroyed or usurped. One of the first chores is that we transcend our fears through our integration of them, not our negation of them. We
18
must go though the door, not over it. These issues arise, taking us out of expansiveness, but can’t simply be buried and paved over if we are to truly hold this space of expansiveness for any length of time. We have to dig in, we have to walk down into that valley and find what keeps this little Jack-in–the-box clown alive within us. It’s often a wounded child-self. If you’ve squelched its feelings and disregarded its perspective, it will pop up, over and over again, until it’s been fully heard, healed, and integrated. Telling yourself you’re an adult now, and done with your childhood, only works when it’s true. That wounded child self is usually the one who is throwing all these fits, collapsing you into fear. We’re not done until this child is done, until it can be heard – and can heal.
There comes a time when the wounded child is no longer wounded.
In its purest form, it transitions from needing to build fortresses to wanting to play again, and draw source from the deliciousness of life. True transcendence is where we make a shift from the perspective of the protective and prowling cat to that of the hummingbird, who survives on pure nectar. Each time we contract into fear, wounding, and grudgery, it’s an opportunity to revisit the sludge at the bottom of our glasses. Know that being pulled back into this muck is not some big failure on your part. This is a process of refinement, not perfection. When our lessons are complete, our souls will take flight. When we have arrived, it will be time to go. Dear Ashtara:
Messages from Your Angels and Master Teachers Dear Ashtara, My husband has been unemployed. He had an interview recently and they offered him a job but he first has to pass the background check and screening. If all goes well, he will start next month. Do you see him working there next month? Selina, 52, San Antonio, TX Dear Selina, It seems like the wind is going to keep going, so don’t give up. I believe he will get another job, right after he is approved for the job you are asking about. As a matter of fact, he might get a promotion, or something else better comes along pretty fast. Keep your eyes open, do not bother him with petty things now. He should focus, as well as understand, the ultimate thing he was born to do, which is to become self-employed with a business of his own. One day, that may be a reality. Selina, your highest master teacher is Gabriel, the angel. Dear Ashtara, What is my gift? What should I be doing while in this world? I feel angst over being almost forty-eight and still not connecting to a higher power very often. I feel like my life keeps sinking and I am less able to find a way out of poverty and bad or unrewarding jobs. I want to be alone more and more. Maybe it is depression from having to move. I need to find where I belong. Raila, 47, Del Rio, TX Dear Raila, Life is not as bad as you imagine. I can see it is very difficult, though. Look for very positive, loving, and romantic people to help heal you. Some people get online just to find friends, as well as partners. You were born to be a plastic surgeon, M.D., or nurse practitioner. Thus, natural forms of healing should appeal to you. Focus on the music in your mind that God himself has sung to you to help you. The messages in your mind are either God or Gabriel. You were

born a receiver to the other side and very psychic. Go within and dwell there at least twenty minutes every day. Your questions will be answered. Dear Ashtara, My husband recently retired after thirty-two years in the Army. He started a job about a month ago, but we don’t know if this work will continue since it is a yearly contract that must be funded annually. We should know by mid-year if he still has this job. Do you see him getting a job elsewhere, and if so, will we stay living in the same location? Deborah, 49, Austin, TX Dear Deborah, Those are answers anyone would want to know. Yes, he will continue for up to five-plus months at this particular rate of income, which may grow. Hopefully, it will. It doesn’t seem like he is going to be treated like anything but a faithful and loyal citizen after thirty-two years. When he decides to stop, we think he will learn the stock market and begin to, with guidance, make more income. Please begin your own healing and doing readings for people. Your speed of spiritual development will quadruple instantly. Ashtar, Sandalfon, High Teacher Zeus, and others will be at your helm. Submit your question for ‘Dear Ashtara’ via email: Ashtara@SashaWhite.com or call (512) 278-0559 and give your question (up to 30 words) with name or nickname, age, city, and state. Private Sessions can be scheduled (in person or by phone). Questions answered and more. Ashtara Sasha White is a gifted psychic, profound healer, and channel from the Ascended Masters/ Archangels. hrow out the creams and masks, delete that surgeon’s number. Face Yoga is the new way to keep looking younger, firmer, and healthier.
THE FOREHEAD DAB: Prevent, reduce forehead lines
Start with eyes open or closed, whichever feels more comfortable. Place the palm of your hand on the right side of your forehead. Press, or dab, your forehead gently, moving gradually across to the left, then back toward the right. Start with one dab per second, gradually slow to one dab every ten seconds. Do one minute total. Relaxing the frontalis muscle of your forehead means less tension. Improves circulation, keeping skin refreshed and glowing. Use this exercise to practice keeping your forehead still while widening the eyes, to avoid expression lines.
THE EYEBROW LIFT: Prevent, reduce hooded eyes.
Place index fingers under the eyebrows. Very slowly close your eyes, hold for ten seconds. Repeat twice more. You should feel shaking in the upper part of your eyelids. Lift your hands away from the eyebrows, place all your fingertips in the middle of the forehead. Very gently smooth fingers away from each other toward your temples, and lift off. Keep eyes wide, don’t raise the eyebrows. Repeat for thirty seconds. Forehead muscles work against resistance of the fingers, helping build strength and tone. Follow with relaxing forehead massage.
THE BUTTERFLY: Prevent, reduce lines between eyebrows.

Using index, middle, and ring finger on both hands, smooth between eyebrows. Move hands away from each other. When they reach the hairline, look down, hold for ten seconds. Bring fingers back to starting position, repeat twice more. Do the same exercise (three sets of ten seconds) with eyes wide open, ensuring you don’t raise the eyebrows. Massaging action helps relieve tension in the muscle between your eyebrows, preventing lines. Try not to drag the skin too much.
THE THINKER: Prevent, reduce double chin.
Place fist under your chin, pushing upward slightly. Open and close your mouth thirty times, pushing upward with your hand slightly. Chin should be parallel to the floor. Holding mouth open, very slightly wrap lips around your teeth. Hold thirty seconds. Tones and strengthens lower face muscles. The fist acts as resistance to work muscles in the lower jaw. If it feels more comfortable, rest your elbow on a table. Danielle Collins is a Face Yoga expert and authority on yoga, nutrition, and wellbeing. www.WatkinsPublishing.com
AYAHUASCA
How to choose a Sacred Plant Medicine retreat by Marc Mallat
E
ver felt the calling to attend a sacred medicinal plant retreat? There are lots of things to consider. Although they can be life transforming, they can also be extraordinarily challenging on mental, physical, emotional and spiritual levels, and aren’t for everyone. For many people, the main motivation is to try Ayahuasca, known as a visionary, healing, hallucinogenic, tea-like brew. Sometimes called yagé, it’s one of the most widely-used and famous sacred plants offered in plant medicine retreats, used by shamans in the jungles of Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, and Brazil to achieve altered mental states. People try Ayahuasca for medical conditions, locating lost items, searching for meaning in life, or resolving personal conflicts. It’s no wonder thousands of people travel abroad just to try the powerful medicinal plant. Today, there are approximately one hundred Ayahuasca centers in the city of Iquitos, Peru alone.
Do your homework.
Whether you decide to participate in this sacred ceremony or not, it’s important to do your research. You’ll quickly encounter positive reviews describing the experience as lifechanging. Many people report feeling emotionally triggered by some of these teacher plants, known to bring up challenges to your conscious mind to be digested, integrated, and processed. Unfortunately, there are just as many negative, traumatizing accounts of sacred medicinal plant retreats as well, often due to shamans with less than pure intentions who abuse their power. One maestro considers many shamans brujos, sorcerers, with their own agendas for power and personal gain. With that in mind, how do you find the ideal location and shaman to guide you through your adventure towards consciousness enhancement and healing?
more playful and joyful. More participatory ones as the tend to get out of hand with the lack of certain containment rules. Preparation. Depending on the lineage of shamans administering retreats, you may have to adhere to specific diets and sexual abstinence, usually necessary for a minimum of one to three days before and after, the retreat. Generally, the longer the diet, the more effective the inner work. Make sure you know which foods to avoid, and educate yourself on dangerous pharmaceutical and drug interactions, including some over-the-counter drugs and herbs. Participants. Eight to twenty is considered a small retreat. Typically, the smaller the number, the better the quality of integration and aftercare. With larger groups, individual attention might be overlooked, and quality may be diminished. Location. Even though I still take part in sacred medicinal plant ceremonies throughout other countries, I prefer Peru or Brazil. These countries are native homes to many sacred medicinal plants, and there’s something very magical and unique about being surrounded by the rich organic energy of the Amazon rainforest. Aftercare. It’s imperative to understand how to process and integrate Ayahuasca healing after your retreat. Be sure some type of integration process such as sharing circles, meditations, dimensional breathwork, or yoga is available after ceremonies, and qualified assistance is ongoing throughout the retreat. Marc Mallat is a transpersonal psychotherapist, corporate trainer, creator of the Dimensional Awareness Process, and CEO of Progressions Group, specializing in classical corporate trainings, life coaching, personal development, transpersonal psychotherapy, and energetic healing modalities. www.ProgressionsGroup.com
Here are some guidelines.
Safety. This should be your top priority. Be sure to choose seasoned shamans and facilitators with as much experience as possible. Ask what the shamans are adding to the Ayahuasca brew besides Ayahuasca and Chacruna. Other medicinal herbs may be added for different reasons and in specific amounts, but if dosages aren’t correct, this could potentially be hazardous to your psychological and physical health. Make sure you can communicate with your shaman and feel comfortable with them. If you’re organizing a retreat with others, have a screening process put in place to protect participants who aren’t fit for this intense type of inner work. Atmosphere. Some ceremonies are conducted in a quiet atmosphere with serious and respectful overtone, others are
