Towards a Poorer Light For solo percussion and large orchestra [2007] This piece was written for and premiered by David Skidmore with the Royal Academy of Music Orchestra (Christopher Austin conducting) on 27 September 2007

Towards a Poorer Light Lord, our strength has gone now. perhaps we have been home too long and the time has come for a restless year in a wide bed we folded down or a single dream where it is constantly midnight and each of those people we failed lines the battlefields of our hearts. Here, in the quiet dark, with my life collecting against me, I sharpen my swords and string my bow— preparing your morning sacrifice— waiting for one of your greater angels to turn me away towards a poorer light. Program Note Towards A Poorer Light is effectively a single melodic line obsessively trying to emerge from the infecting and driving pulse of a solo percussionist. This linear goal is frustrated over and over again by the circular nature of the structure, harmony, and musical materials. As time passes the efforts of the orchestra become more and more desperate, pushing forward through metric modulations, higher levels of dissonance, and stronger and longer attempts at melody. The final push drives us into a wild climax that is very quickly and suddenly cut off by a solo cello that just as quickly gives way to the solo violin. The short coda gives the melody a single, unfulfilling iteration before the cellos pull the entire piece to a decidedly tonal conclusion in A-flat major.
