Winter Weekend Itinerary: ALL EYES SOUTH To rush through South Auckland in a hurry to the next stop would be a mistake. A myriad of experiences await all those who delve a little deeper.

FRIDAY: ACTIVE INDULGENCE Ease your way into a relaxed weekend with a morning High Tea at Fisher House in Highbrook, a 20-minute drive south of central Auckland. Available between 9am and 11am, pick at sweet pastries in the former grounds of Sir Woolf and Lady Fisher. Built in 1962 as a 71-hectare racing horse stud farm, it’s preened to perfection. With rounded bellies, drive a further 15 minutes west to Manukau Harbour, the larger of Auckland’s twin harbours and a spectacle of tidal flats and wading birds. The harbour’s inner reaches can be admired from Mangere Bridge, a bonny village bristling with community spirit. Six minutes from here is Ambury Regional Park, gateway to the Manukau Coastal Cycleway. Grazing the waterfront, this 14km return route is flat and easy. Follow the trail to Ōtuataua Stonefields with its resident large-scale archaeological remnants. TOP TIP: No bike? No worries. Hire your wheels from Torpedo7 in Manukau.

18

Not solely an ancient volcano with impressive 360-degree views, Māngere Mountain encompasses an Education Centre and gardens. If you have energy left in the tank, guided 90-minute walks are available. With appetites rife once more, head to Pah Homestead in Hillsborough, a 10-minute drive north. Located in an impressive Italianate heritage building, the café sits atop a hill overlooking Monte Cecilia Park. Tuck into a light lunch before admiring some of the 9000-strong collection of contemporary artworks curated from the Wallace Arts Trust Collection, then pop into the shop, and an emporium of fantastic one-of-a-kind crafts. A walk around the sweeping park is equally hard to resist. Finish the day at Villa Maria Estate winery. The newly renamed Tasting Room combines wine tasting with small platters, served in the vineyard’s stately surroundings.

Pinned to the tip of Āwhitu Peninsula, the lighthouse is over 140 years old and unlike many of its kin, fully open to the public. Ascend to the upper deck for panoramic harbour views. Located in the Bombay Hills and enveloped by olive groves, you can sit before a crackling fireplace and feast on contemporary Mediterranean cuisine.

LOCAL LIFE

SAMMY MURRAY Want to know every Weta Workshop secret? You'll discover it all at Weta Workshop Unleashed. Staff member, Sammy Murray gives us the low-down. What can visitors expect at Weta Workshop Unleashed? Expect the unexpected! We think of it as offering our guests whatever their mind can unleash. Unlike most museums and exhibitions, guests can play with so many elements – touch is such an important part of learning. It’s a hyper crazy version of our workshop in which there are three movie elements – a classic, lowbudget, horror flick, a fantasy film and an epic sci-fi movie with a local connection. How do your tours differ from Weta Workshop tours in Wellington? They are really quite different. Our Wellington tours showcase the cool stuff we've made over 25 years. In some cases, the items are precious so you can’t touch them. In Weta Workshop Unleashed, guests can see, feel and touch what we’ve made; take photos and play. Tell us about your role I am the experience lead, so my job is to make sure everything is running properly. And I look after

our fantastic crew. We call them Unleashed Technicians and they are the face of our experience – bringing it to life and making it really fun and lively. I also help our team in the Weta Cave. This is our biggest and most exciting retail site where visitors can come and see the displays and rare collectibles. What do you like about it? Every day here is very different and I really love the fast pace – there’s always something happening. Another great part of my role is seeing how the hosts build relationships with our guests. All of our crew bring a little of themselves to Weta Workshop Unleashed. What is the most popular workshop and why? You really can’t compare them – they are very, very different experiences. We encourage people, if they can, to see both. Any other thoughts? We have had such a wonderful response from our guests and we would love to see plenty more Kiwis come and experience Weta Workshop Unleashed.

WHAT TO DO

AT AOTEA ARTS QUARTER

The arts, cultural and civic heart of Auckland, Aotea Arts Quarter is home to heritage buildings such as The Civic, the Auckland Town Hall and the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. It’s also where you’ll find an incredible mix of artistic diversity. Te Waharoa, Aotea Square, Central Auckland

Catch a show The Civic is the dame of Auckland: a grand, timeless theatre. The Classic Comedy Club hosts live cabaretstyle comedy shows and the Basement Theatre is small, personal and showcases homegrown talent. The Q Theatre is well-known for its thoughtprovoking performances.

Grab a pre-show bite The Glass Goose rooftop bar is just eight minutes on foot from Aotea Square and perfect for a pre-show tipple. Nearby SkyCity Auckland offers a hub of eateries and if you’re hungry after the show, Federal Delicatessen is a New York-style diner that takes orders right up until 10pm – no reservation required.

Visit an iconic venue The beautiful Civic has stood stoically since 1929. If you think the grand exterior is impressive, wait until you see the Asianinspired foyer and twinkling auditorium. The Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is a must-see, too. It’s a clever mix of old and new, with the best of the original 1888 building’s exterior flowing into a very stylish, modern addition.

Hang out in Aotea Square Aotea Square is a large, paved public space in the heart of the quarter. At the Queen Street entrance, you’ll find Te Waharoa formed in wood and copper by Māori sculptor Selwyn Muru. Enjoy an assortment of free festivities throughout winter, including a pop up ice-rink and adjoining Ice Bar which will be open between 17th June and 25th July 2021.

Wine Regions

cheers

Auckland is home to three wine regions, all promising exquisite wines and gorgeous views.

1

In West Auckland, Kumeū is Auckland’s oldest wine region, dating back to the 1930s. You’ll find some of the best-known names in New Zealand wines such as Soljans Estate Winery, Coopers Creek Vineyard, Westbrook Winery and The Hunting Lodge Winery & Restaurant, as well as smaller boutique producers.

2

Matakana is a beautiful spot one hours’ drive north of central Auckland. Many producers focus on red varieties such as merlot and cabernet sauvignon, but it’s known for whites, too. Wine is complemented by art, and at Brick Bay Wines the two collide: there is both a boutique vineyard and a sculpture trail.

3

Waiheke Island is a self-contained bubble of viticulture just 40 minutes by ferry from downtown Auckland. Many wineries produce a worldrenowned range of reds and whites.

EXTRA SPECIAL EXPERIENCES 1. The Tasting Room at Villa Maria Estate in Māngere. Limited to 10 guests; enjoy the vineyard’s best drops with small plates and platters to complement the wine. 2. Vineyard Cottages in Kumeū offer overnight stays nestled amidst the vines. 3. Grab a spot by the outdoor stone fireplace at Mudbrick Vineyard and Restaurant on Waiheke Island, or beside the indoor hearth at Tantalus Estate.

There are all-budget baches flanking mind-blowing beaches or, for something special, book a cultural stay at Ngatiwai ki Aotea Kawa Marae.

WiFi ACCESS

Download apps such as AKL City Tours for a variety of tours across central Auckland; Introducing Kupu uses your camera to translate objects into Te Reo Māori, and get virtually shown around Auckland by using Auckland Virtual Tours.

Wireless access is abundant in most cafés, libraries and other public places. Accommodation providers may issue a code for free or charged WiFi. Look out for free Hotspots – AucklandWiFI@ Tomizone gives 30min free WiFi per day in central Auckland.

Public Transport

Visitor Information

He Pārongo Manuhiri

Auckland has an extensive public transport network of buses, trains and ferries that make it easy to get around. You can travel to most parts of Auckland with the Link bus departure points, Britomart train station and ferry terminal all located around the lower end of Queen St.

Visit at.govt.nz or get the AT Mobile App for more information and to plan your journey.

BUS SERVICES

Auckland Transport (AT) Metro bus services operate from early in the morning, with higher frequency services during commuter times, and run until around 11pm. On Friday and Saturday, later Northern Express and Night Buses depart central Auckland to various suburbs, and operate into the early hours of the morning.

FERRY TRANSPORT

RAIL TRANSPORT

AT Metro ferries have regular commuter services that sail from central Auckland to 13 coastal locations including Devonport and Waiheke Island, and the more recent additions of Hobsonville, Gulf and Pine harbours.

AT Metro trains travel to south, east and west Auckland. They depart from the Britomart Station at the bottom of Queen St and are ideal for getting to major shopping centres or events at Eden Park and Mt Smart Stadium.

TICKETING

You can pay for your AT Metro bus, train or ferry trip with cash, or with an AT HOP card. For more details about AT HOP cards, visit AT.govt.nz/ATHOP.

TO AND FROM THE AIRPORT SkyBus operates the City Airport Express to and from the airport and central Auckland, operating seven days a week from 5.50am. The North Harbour Express service is temporarily suspended. The bright orange 380 Airporter buses travel to Auckland Airport from Manukau and Onehunga. The WINTER AUCKLAND – FREE OFFICIAL GUIDE

Airporter buses operate seven days a week from 4.30am to 11.45pm, on a 15-20 minute schedule. Apart from public transport, other options include taxis and shuttles found waiting outside the terminal 24/7. Also major rental car companies have depots located inside the airport terminal.
