Travelling with Pets - WHANGANUI & MANAWATŪ

Here, getting off the beaten track is as easy as stepping out of the door. The region is flush with walks, tramps, bike trails and beaches, giving you nothing but quality time together.

DOG PARKS

BULLS DOMAIN, RANGITĪKEI A great spot for all the family – furry and not - to stretch their legs, with a playground for the kids and a mix of enclosed and open exercise areas for the dog. There is also a bush walk at the far end of the park with plenty of big trees for shade.

AHIMATE DOG PARK, AWAPUNI This great stretch of land is the perfect place to either train your dog on the agility equipment or let them burn off excess energy. The fully fenced area is ideal for those who aren’t keen to return when released off-leash, but still love to mingle. Water drinking areas and wash stations are ideal for both summer and winter conditions.

ŌTAMATEA RESERVE, WHANGANUI This lovely reserve has two separate dogs exercise areas: one a fully enclosed paddock and the other a big open space with trees and shrubs for the dogs to snuffle about under. Various doggy events, training and agility competitions are held here throughout the year here for some added fun.

PAPAKAI PARK, TAIHAPE This fully-fenced, quiet track is perfect for some off-leash action. The 30-minute loop runs alongside the river and includes a great swimming spot for dogs.

CHECK OUT

HUNTERVILLE HUNTERWAY FESTIVAL Held every October, this unique country event attracts between 4000 – 5000 visitors. The Shepherds’ Shemozzle is the main race of the day, where competitors do the full course with their Huntaway dog by their side.

ANIMAL STREET ART Street artist @swiftmantis has created some epically realistic murals based on real life characters around his home stomping ground. While you are on your roadie, see if you can spot these kitty creations: Squishee in Papaioea, Rustle on Bowden Street in Fielding, Hangar’s Home in Whanganui and Niko on Oxford Street, Levin.
