Top Tips for
Eco-friendly Travel Luckily, a little goes a long way... If possible, carry a reusable water bottle and keep-cup.
Help us keep our beaches beautiful by disposing of litter.
Ask your hotel to refill your water bottles.
When hiking, leave nothing behind: everything you carry in, carry out.
Carry reusable grocery bags.
Stick to walking tracks to avoid damaging natural habitat.
Get around on rental bikes, e-scooters and public transport. Hire a hybrid rental car.
Use Uber. Most are hybrid cars. Use sunscreen free from coral-harming oxybenzone and octinoxate.
Picnic using metal cutlery and straws. Look for the recycling symbol on cans, plastic, paper and cardboard. Ask the local i-SITE for the nearest recycling station. Re-use your hotel towels. Eat locally sourced food.
Reuse and recycle this guide. Paper stock sourced from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) accredited sustainable forest, and printed by Enviro-mark Diamond certified Webstar.

GREEN SPACES OUTWEIGH THE URBAN
Auckland covers over 1000 square kilometres, but this is no concrete jungle. Green spaces seep into every nook, even in the very centre; Albert, Victoria and Myers parks are all minutes, on foot, from the Sky Tower. In total there are 48 dormant volcanoes and 27 regional parks to delve into, as well as a traditional Japanese garden at Western Springs Lakeside Park (Fukuoka Garden), a seldom busy boardwalk skimming the watery edges of Ōrakei Basin and the colossal Cornwall Park with lawns, free barbecues and farm animals. Further afield (but only by 40 minutes in the car) Te Henga (Bethells Beach) boasts a gigantic, explorable cave and the lush Waitākere Ranges Regional Park swells with rainforest and waterfalls. GETTING OFF THE BEATEN TRACK IS EASY
Simply take to the water – we’re surrounded by it! Enjoy a guided kayaking sunset tour to Rangitoto Island, the enormous domed volcano that defines our horizon, or go full throttle and tackle Te Ara Moana. This self-guided, five-day kayaking journey covers Auckland’s southeastern coastline, with nightly stopovers at remote regional parks. For familyfriendly kayaking, explore Ōkura Marine Reserve at night. Just 20 minutes' drive out of central Auckland, the water glows neon blue due to bioluminescence.

THERE ARE FIELDS OF ROLLING VINEYARDS
Auckland’s first vineyards were planted in Kumeū, and you need only drive 25 minutes west to find cellar doors and wine tasting. Highlights include Babich Wines with its sun-drenched deck and picnic area, Soljans Estate Winery for an award-winning and Mediterranean-inspired café, and Coopers Creek Vineyard which hosts the Summer Sunday Jazz event every weekend from January. Waiheke Island boasts over 30 vineyards just 40 minutes by ferry from downtown Auckland. Why not book a horse ride with Waiheke Horse Worx and trot along the beach to various cellar doors. IT’S EASY TO GET AROUND
Navigating a new region can be overwhelming but in Auckland there's plenty of public transport. We have a convenient LINK bus service which is ideal for visitors. Look for the red, green, blue and orange buses which loop around central Auckland in varying degrees of distance from the centre; they facilitate many of our must-see places. Head to our premier transport hub, Britomart Transport Centre in downtown Auckland for trains, nearby ferry departures and buses, including the SkyBus for airport transfers. Invest in a HOP card for cheaper fares, available to buy across Auckland; check at.govt.nz for retailers. Auckland is also well facilitated for bikes, with an extensive network of bike lanes. The Nelson Street Cycleway which was once a motorway off ramp is now a super cool (and super bright) pink pathway snaking through Auckland's bustling heart.

POCKETS OF BLISS EXIST EVERYWHERE
Dazzling Tāmaki Drive connects downtown Auckland to a string of sandy beaches. Along the route is Parnell Baths, an historic 60m outdoor Lido with hot pools, loungers and a grassy picnic area. Entry is free for children under 16 and it’s open throughout summer. If you’ve brought your surfboard, head north to golden Orewa or continue to Te Arai. This small coastal community is a 90-minute drive north of Auckland, and a little-known gem. Its regional park has a campground, silky beach and sheltered swimming holes. Hardened wave-chasers should hit the surf along West Auckland’s rugged beaches, followed by a massage at Castaways Resort. Straddling the cliffside, its wild location also boasts glamping with a sunken outdoor bathtub.
THERE ARE DREAMY ISLANDS ON THE DOORSTEP Home to New Zealand’s largest marine reserve, the Hauraki Gulf stretches from Auckland’s shores to the Coromandel Peninsula and is freckled with islands, many of which are beautifully remote but accessible by ferry from downtown Auckland. You can sunbathe on the white sands of Waiheke Island, climb the volcanic cone of Rangitoto or
venture to adjoining Motuora Island for its campground and crystalline water. Tiritiri Matangi is governed by wildlife and flush with birds, and Great Barrier Island is so gorgeously rugged, it’d make Robinson Crusoe swoon (and we’re pretty sure he wouldn’t mind the natural hot springs here, either). That’s just a handful of several islands you can sail to and from.

DAY 1: BEACHY VIBES AND ISLAND HOPPING Grab a big gulp of coffee from the window at Cali Press in the slick retail hub of Commercial Bay and jump on the blue Tāmaki Link bus. Weaving along Tāmaki Drive to the sea-fronting communities of Mission Bay, Kohimārama Beach and St Heliers, you’ll be at the beach within minutes. The bus departs Britomart, just opposite Commercial Bay. Active types might like to get off just shy of Ōkahu Bay Beach and hire a pair of roller blades from Fergs Kayaks. Skate your way along the esplanade to Kohimārama Beach and stop for alfresco brunch at Café on Kohi by the ocean. Energised by the buzz of the seaside, head back to central Auckland and to the historic ferry building where the boat to Waiheke Island departs. Forty minutes later and you’ll have swapped central Auckland's glistening skyline for a bucolic landscape. Waiheke is where lush green hills meet golden beaches and rolling grape vines. Armed with rosé and rugs, you’ll be directed to a private picnic spot overlooking Putiki Bay. After an afternoon of sunbathing and swimming, enjoy dinner at Mudbrick Vineyard and Restaurant while the sun sets behind the distant silhouette of the Sky Tower, then take a moonlit ferry back to downtown Auckland.

DAY 3: RAINFOREST AND WATERFALLS There is no ferry to catch this morning, but a scenic 45-minute drive west from central Auckland will deposit you in the Waitākere Ranges Regional Park. Like many roads in Aotearoa, the landscape changes in ways you’d never expect. The shiny high-rises of Auckland’s modern centre soon dissolve into a wild and rugged topography of dense subtropical rainforest. LOCAL LIFE JACK HOBBS
Just off the Southern Motorway, Auckland Botanic Gardens are a 20-minute drive from central Auckland or the airport, and are free to visit. Jack Hobbs has been in the top job as Director since 1997. Can you tell us about your job, what you like about it? It’s a real delight to mix plants with people and to work with people with that mutual interest. Gardening is so therapeutic. It's hugely beneficial to people and it’s becoming more and more popular. What is special about Auckland Botanic Gardens? It’s a really nice place for people to come to. There’s a nice café, it’s a nice place to be – we meet Qualmark standards for visitor experience and have a New Zealand Gardens Trust rating as well. Our objective is to connect people with plants and we inform people about gardening. What grows here grows in Auckland gardens. We have a trial garden and plants that prosper become ‘star performers’; we promote that programme with leaflets available to visitors and on our website. Who visits the gardens? Visitors are mostly Aucklanders, predominantly South Aucklanders and we have events such as Sculpture in the Gardens which attracts a whole new group of
visitors from across the region. We have around 1.2 million visitors per year. Which is your favourite part of the gardens? The magnolia and camellias when they’re in full flower; it’s so spectacular and magical being surrounding by blossoms and birdlife. The Potter Children’s garden is a favourite for families. It’s very successful, design-wise and kids love it. It’s safe and fun and informative. Where else would you recommend to visitors to Auckland? Eden Garden is an oasis in the middle of central Auckland; a beautiful, quiet garden in an old quarry in Mt Eden. Also, some of our regional parks are treasures of international quality. Āwhitu Regional Park has history, lovely beaches, a beautiful wetland and magnificent trees; it’s really worth the drive to get to it. Up north, Tāwharanui is spectacular. I get to one of those parks and think – wow, it’s great to live in Auckland.

cheers
Auckland is home to three wine regions, all promising exquisite wines and gorgeous views.
1
In West Auckland, Kumeū is Auckland’s oldest wine region, dating back to the 1930s. You’ll find some of the best-known names in New Zealand wines such as Soljans Estate Winery, Coopers Creek Vineyard, Westbrook Winery and The Hunting Lodge Winery & Restaurant, as well as smaller boutique producers.
2
Matakana is a beautiful spot one hours’ drive north of central Auckland. Many producers focus on red varieties such as merlot and cabernet sauvignon, but it’s known for whites, too. Wine is complemented by art, and at Brick Bay Wines the two collide: there is both a boutique vineyard and a sculpture trail.
INSET: Picking grapes at Brick Bay Wines, Matakana, North Auckland © Matakana Village
3
Waiheke Island is a self-contained bubble of viticulture just 40 minutes by ferry from downtown Auckland. Many wineries produce a world-renowned range of reds and whites.
Attached to many of Waiheke’s wineries are restaurants that show off spectacular island views from architecturally inspiring environments. 28

It covers seven floors, with 2770 car parks (free for the first two hours if you download the Westfield app) and an alfresco dining terrace called Rooftop on Broadway; home to a medley of upmarket eateries. Auckland embraces its past with just as much vigour as it grabs a hold of latest trends. Established in the early 1900s, the Domain Wintergardens is a peaceful enclave with a Victorian glasshouse replete with rare plants. Over summer, ‘Music in Parks’ uses the Domain’s historic grand rotunda as the stage for performances. The Viaduct is home to a bevy of slick dining establishments, while nearby Wynyard Quarter was historically used by the timber trade and in the 1930s was a key industrial area. It’s now a trendy strip of bars and eateries. Walk to the very end to admire the long-standing silos, now the venue for projecting films during Auckland’s outdoor movie season.

KAWAU CRUISES OFFERS THE PERFECT DAY TRIP TO KAWAU ISLAND
Hauraki Gulf & Islands map p94
or something very special, consider a 75-minute ferry trip from downtown Auckland to Tiritiri Matangi, an island sanctuary for New Zealand native birds. It’s a nature lover’s paradise. Tiri, as it’s known by locals, is also home to a spectacular lighthouse, walking trails and beaches. You can also catch a 20-minute ferry ride to the island from Gulf Harbour on the Whangaparāoa Peninsula.

G
etting off the grid has never felt so idyllic. Ruggedly beautiful and ringed by golden beaches, Great Barrier Island is a Great Barrier Island, short flight or a four to five-hour Hauraki Gulf ferry trip from downtown Auckland. There is no reticulated electricity supply, supermarkets, banks or ATMs but there are natural hot springs, craggy hikes and starlit skies. The first indication that you’re heading towards paradise will be on the ferry; dolphins like to swim alongside. • The total darkness of Great Barrier Island is palpable – it was the first island in the world to become an International Dark Sky Sanctuary. It’s claimed that 5000 stars are visible on a clear night – about 10 times as many as across the rest of Auckland. • A drive along the east coast reveals sweeping white-sand beaches, in contrast to the
western side where the beaches are rocky and sheltered. • The Aotea Track makes for an engrossing multi-day tramp. • Charter a fishing boat or join a heli-fishing tour to find the best fishing spots around the island. • Discover the island’s native wildlife, with great birdwatching, snorkelling and diving spots.

Public Transport
Visitor Information
He PÄ rongo Manuhiri
Auckland has an extensive public transport network of buses, trains and ferries that make it easy to get around. You can travel to most parts of Auckland with the Link bus departure points, Britomart train station and ferry terminal all located around the lower end of Queen St.
Visit at.govt.nz or get the AT Mobile App for more information and to plan your journey.
BUS SERVICES
Auckland Transport (AT) Metro bus services operate from early in the morning, with higher frequency services during commuter times, and run until around 11pm. On Friday and Saturday, later Northern Express and Night Buses depart central Auckland to various suburbs, and operate into the early hours of the morning.
FERRY TRANSPORT
RAIL TRANSPORT
AT Metro ferries have regular commuter services that sail from central Auckland to 13 coastal locations including Devonport and Waiheke Island, and the more recent additions of Hobsonville, Gulf and Pine harbours.
AT Metro trains travel to south, east and west Auckland. They depart from the Britomart Station at the bottom of Queen St and are ideal for getting to major shopping centres or events at Eden Park and Mt Smart Stadium.
TICKETING
You can pay for your AT Metro bus, train or ferry trip with cash, or with an AT HOP card. For more details about AT HOP cards, visit AT.govt.nz/ATHOP.
TO AND FROM THE AIRPORT SkyBus operates two services to and from the airport, the City Airport Express to central Auckland and the North Harbour Express to the North Shore. SkyBus operates seven days a week. The bright orange 380 Airporter buses travel to Auckland Airport from Manukau and Onehunga. The SUMMER AUCKLAND – FREE OFFICIAL GUIDE
Airporter buses operate seven days a week from 4.30am to 11.45pm, on a 15-20 minute schedule. Apart from public transport, other options include taxis and shuttles found waiting outside the terminal 24/7. Also major rental car companies have depots located inside the airport terminal.
