TARANAKI
Just around the corner, halfway between Auckland and Wellington on the West Coast of the North Island, you’ll find Taranaki. A region brimming with stunning landscapes, unique attractions, a world-class arts scene, and vibrant events.
I
t could be the natural landscape, from the picture-perfect peak of Mount Taranaki/Taranaki Maunga to the black-sand surf beaches, or maybe it’s the creative events calendar including WOMAD, the world of music and dance festival. Perhaps it’s the many marvellous gardens, or the wide range of activities that offer something for almost everyone. Then there are the region’s hundreds of kilometres of alpine and bush hikes, 20 picturesque golf courses and 12 worldclass surf breaks. Whatever your reason for visiting Taranaki, you can’t help but soak up the energy of this dynamic region.

It is said in that Taranaki Maunga once stood in the centre of the North Island alongside the mountains of Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. Taranaki fell in love with Mount Pihanga and constantly battled with Tongariro for her heart. After losing a particularly heated battle Taranaki was banished to the west, carving the Whanganui River in his wake.

Like so many great stories, the story of Taranaki begins with a love affair
T
hese days the 2518m volcanic peak, which last erupted in 1755, offers adventures through untouched bush and alpine environments. To get the full story head to the Department of Conservation Visitor Centres at North Egmont
or Dawson Falls mountain access roads, or the iconic Ngati Ruanui Stratford Mountain House. Taranaki Maunga offers over 200km of walks, from ‘goblin’ forests to spectacular waterfalls, to alpine hikes and the drive around the base of the Maunga will connect you with many of the region’s stories, as well as welcoming towns, cosy cafés, art galleries and other points of interest. Whatever adventure you choose to have on Taranaki Maunga, be prepared for the rapidly changing weather conditions and check the Department of Conservation website for up-to-date weather reports.

ACTIVITIES
There’s a huge selection of things to see and do in Taranaki, from outdoor escapades and fun familyfriendly activities to fantastic museums and vibrant creative spaces, you’ll be spoilt for choice here.
I
n the region’s main city, New Plymouth, there’s a huge selection of things to do, from waterfront walks and art trails to surfing, tramping and cycling. The city has world-class art galleries and museums and a growing entertainment scene, as well as exciting events throughout the year. Outside of New Plymouth, the coastline offers more than great surf. There are welcoming cafés, art and craft studios, charming small towns and opportunities to tap into the area’s rich history – explore pā sites, discover the history of the Cape Egmont Lighthouse, visit shipwrecks 38
and eat to your heart’s content. There is every opportunity to get off the beaten track in Taranaki, from quirky townships where you’ll be sure to find treasures and bargains alike, to tranquil bush walks and remote highways that are so sparsely used, petrol stations cease to exist. For as much isolation as you crave, there are populous activities, too. Acclaimed gardens saturate the region, there are countless museums to enrich your stay, art galleries galore, and enough beaches to swim, surf or relax at for 365 days of the year.

All in all, there are about 50 gardens in the Taranaki area that are open to the public and many of these are considered to have international, national or regional significance. South Taranaki is home to a number of standout gardens. Here are a few you might like to check out: HOLLARD GARDENS are located in Kaponga, a 30-minute drive from Hāwera. These gardens are densely planted with beautiful plants, with an emphasis on wellestablished rhododendrons and camellias. Visitors can discover the garden through meandering paths, open lawns, the children’s area and a food growing area.
Hāwera’s KING EDWARD PARK Park established in 1902, has rose beds of both heritage and modern varieties, historic aged trees and a century old model boating pond. The kids will love the hidden features found along the pathways including the 150-year-old cannon, a pirate ship and fort.
Opening hours: 10am-4pm weekdays, 10am-2pm weekends & public holidays. Over 3000 toys on display – iconic Kiwiana. Plus slot cars, sand pit, theatrette & dioramas. Operating toy-making foundry on site. Toy models, collectables & spare parts for sale. Also on site: Inglewood Information Centre & Inglewood Heritage Centre. FUN HO!
