from the cockpit

Spending time wisely It is hard to know where to start with this editorial. I know what I want to write; the best way to do it escapes me. Already, the industry has lost four or five pilots that I can think of right off without even looking at the NTSB reports. Those that come to mind were experienced ag-pilots, except one.

A pilot has to set minimum standards for himself. We think in the present, believing we have to get out one more load today before the wind gets up, the rain moves in, or the sun sets. If we push to do that, do we break our minimum standards? If so, now is the time to stop and reconsider.

I extend my sympathies to the families. It is a huge loss and so very unexpected. There is nothing right about losing a loved one, but it does happen. There is not one of us, I believe, that cannot say the same thing almost happened to us at least once in our career. Probably, more than just once. Unfortunately, it is the nature of our business.

How can hitting an obstacle, like a tree or power line, be related to time? Why was the obstacle hit? Was it because the pilot was tired? Was it because the pilot was distracted? Was it a little of both? Before the pilot took off with the load, he should have known how to avoid obstacles and surely, he did know. For whatever reason, it didn’t happen.

With the fatalities I am thinking of, the speculation is pilot error. Just about all ag-aviation accidents could be classified as pilot error. The reliability of our planes and their engines is exceptional; yet the “reliability” of a pilot getting distracted is even greater. It is a tough job with no allowances for even the smallest of mistakes.

I suppose there are those who will argue that distractions and other factors are as influential in accidents as time. I can’t say they aren’t, except why was there a distraction, or other factor? Was there not enough time to pull up to a safe altitude to reset the GPS? Was there not enough time to go to a different field not as close to one where a fellow ag pilot was working?

How does a pilot stop from making these unfortunate mistakes? From my experience, time is the predominant factor. Time dictates just about everything we do, or don’t do, in the cockpit. We seem to always be mission driven. We need to keep up the production of the aircraft, keep the customer satisfied and stay caught up. It takes time; time we often don’t think we have.

It is not prudent for me to claim all accidents are the result of poor time management. It is evident, however, that time plays a very big part in safety. There are many ways to use our time better than pushing the aircraft and its pilot to and even past the limits. For instance, a larger loading hose to cut down on ground time; an operations manager so the pilot is more efficient; maybe even a larger aircraft or additional aircraft to do the job at hand.

Time is a relative element. Not unlike money, there are wise ways to spend it. We can save a little here and have a little more elsewhere. It is a management thing because time is finite. If we get behind in acres and start pushing the safety envelope, whether it be turning faster, carrying heavier loads or staying in the cockpit for too long, our use of time now becomes questionable. An extreme comparison is the difference in a hammerhead 1520 seconds turn versus a safe and productive 30-40 seconds turn is only a few seconds. Seconds become minutes, but not enough minutes to risk damaging the aircraft. A turn accident is usually fatal. Is the time saved worth that risk?

Overall, the ag-aviation industry has become safer than it has ever been. Successive fatalities tend to make us think otherwise. The number of accidents at the end of the year will tell the tale. Even one accident is too much. However, we need to be realistic, striving for zero accidents and learning from the ones that happen. Until next month, Keep Turning

agair mail P-51 Solo Congratulations on your soloing the P-51D. Not many people in the world can say they have done that. I flew a two-place (with dual controls) P-51D from the back seat in 1975, but I didn’t get to solo it. I spent about an hour in it and had a lot of fun. I didn’t take it off or land it. It cost a lot less money to fly a P-51 in 1975 than it does today. I paid $200.00 for that hour. I think av-gas was about 30-40 cents a gallon at that time. Great article. Carlin Lawrence Carnegie, OK Hello Carlin; Thanks. Words can’t describe those flights in Toby McPherson’s P51D “Boomer”. Hope all is good with Sandra and you.—Bill

In this photo, Duncan’s AT-402 is at the load area atop a typical New Zealand strip; short and steep. Many thanks to Duncan Hart for providing the photos and insight through Field Air’s Peter Mackay, an Air Tractor dealer based in Ballarat, Australia. Peter says he knows of no other part of the world as picturesque. INSET - Perched high overlooking Laverick’s Bay in the Pacific Ocean on New Zealand’s South Island is Duncan Hart’s AT-402. The airstrip is east of Christchurch, New Zealand. Duncan doesn’t see many clear days like this, as the area is exposed on all sides and often windy and cloudy. His main base is at Methvin, an hour’s drive southwest of Christchurch, on the Canterbury plains. Note the New Zealand style spreader for high volumes of phosphate on pasture.

Speaking to kids Dear AgAir Update; I have been asked to make a school presentation about ag-aviation. Do you have any suggestions on the best way to do this? Thanks in advance, Kyle Horsfall Colby, KS Kyle Your best bet is to contact NAAA for their speaker’s kit. It may be available on their web site: www.agaviation.org. Honesty is always the best policy. We have nothing to be ashamed of and we are helping to feed an ever growing world. Carry a clean helmet and wear some sort of “uniform”, whether it be a flight suit or

a logo shirt, but be sure to be as neat as possible. I don’t think a tie would be necessary. If you have access to a projector, photos of your operation are always good and you can point out the basics of your aircraft and its high-tech components. Like all kids, one day they will have a career. They would probably be interested in what it takes to be an ag-pilot and your duties, work time and income potential. Of course, much of your presentation will be dictated by the age of the students. Good luck and keep it short and sweet. —Bill

comment from agairupdate.com I was part of the team that developed the Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6. At 500 SHP, everything was fine, but as we increased power problems showed up. A lot of hard work went into resolving these problems, but we ended up with a gearbox that handled nearly twice the power of the original PT6. It has since built up an impeccable service record. The first stage sun gear is probably the most critical part in the gearbox. Conformity with a drawing is only one part of the process in producing an acceptable part. A specific, controlled manufacturing process is equally important and certain parameters are observed during the final engine test. How a branch office of the FAA is able to approve the use of parts made without use of proprietary knowledge escapes me. There is no requirement to consult the FAA Engine Directorate that issued the Type Certificate, or contact the OEM. The part goes into service

Hope everything was fine on your trip back to the U.S. from Brazil. I also would like to thank you for your attention at AgAir Update’s exhibit stand. Please Bill, I would like to have your help, and maybe you can give us some suggestion. We are looking for a company related to agricultural aviation that may be interested in doing a partnership in the USA to manufacture an ag-plane whose project is almost ready and have already two planes in flight testing. This aircraft was designed to use a Lycoming IO-540-K, very popular in Latin America and most of the components used for its manufacture are made in the USA. We believe this plane might fill a range of agricultural aircraft which are no longer available in the US market, like the C-188 and PA-25. The manufacturing of this aircraft in the U.S. certainly would lower its price, compared to Brazil and would make it available for export to Latin American countries.

I am sending you some pictures. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank You very much for your attention and help. Best Regards, Luiz Villares luiz.villares@agroair.com AIR POWER, Inc., Brasil Luiz It was good to visit with you in Campo Grande. I am familiar with the Planair ag-plane that is very similar to the C-188. I have spoken to its principles on several occasions. To answer your question, I don’t know of anyone who would be interested in such a project and I am not so sure it would be any

less expensive to develop in the U.S. Our FAA is a quagmire of bureaucracy. The left hand hardly knows what the right hand is doing. This delays and sometimes even prevents certifications. For example, it has been over two years that the Thrush H80 GE powered aircraft has been working closely with the FAA as a manufacturer and still it is not certified. The best I can do is publish your letter with the photos and see if anyone contacts you. There may be an investor out there willing to take the financial risks to bring this aircraft to market. —Bill

Mystery aircraft

I have selected for submission this sprightly 235 BPH yellow bird for several reasons. It is an agricultural machine. It may confuse some of you (I hope) because you may think you know what it is; but won’t, because it is related to another larger ag-aircraft which was used in New Zealand and which proved to be absolutely horrible for the NZ topdressing role. One extremely experienced NZ pilot tried one for a day, flew it back to HQ and told his boss that either “It goes or I go!” The story I heard was that his boss then tried it on a job, but soon returned back to base. The aircraft was not used by that company! Submitted by Mike Feeney, mikefeeney@actrix.co.nz Wingspread, #12. June 29th 2012 ‑New Zealand See page 19 for answer

Over 40 years of ag flying in Ohio by Graham Lavender On the southern tip of Lake Erie, about 50 miles west of Cleveland, Ohio, is an ag operation that has been a mainstay in the Ohio countryside for over 50 years. Three generations of ag pilots have been hard at work treating mostly vegetables and corn during the summer months and contributing to their state and national agricultural aviation associations during the winter for more than half a century.

Luther Gibbs, Sr., now 87, started in 1952 with a ground machine what developed into Gibbs Aero Spray. He bought his first aircraft in 1968, operating for the next 30 years with a Piper Brave, Piper Pawnee, Cessna 188 and an Ag Cat. Luther, Sr. held numerous offices with the Ohio Agricultural Aviation Association and served as president of the National Agricultural Aviation Association in 1987.

Luther’s son, Luther, Jr., began his flying career in 1974 flying a Pawnee and working alongside his father. The Ag Cat, two Pawnees and Cessna served Gibbs Aero Spray well for the next 24 years. In 1998, the operation upgraded to turbine power. Luther, Jr. traded the two Pawneees and the Ag Cat for an Air Tractor AT-400. Luther, Jr., flew the Air Tractor and used the Cessna 188 for dry work until 2006,

when Luther, Jr.’s son, Brian joined the ranks. Brian Gibbs was raised in the agricultural aviation business. As soon as he was able, his father and grandfather had Brian working on the ground. Loading airplanes throughout his high school years, it was only natural that Brian get into flying. However, both Luther, Sr. and Luther, Jr., as well as Brian’s mom, insisted on Brian going to college before coming back to work full-time with the flying service. So, after high school, Brian went to college during the winter and helped with the spraying operation during the summer. In 2006, while still attending college, Brian had his first season in a Cessna 188. He graduated college with a degree in accounting and financial planning, which he is able to utilize in the daily operations of the flying service.

Three generations of ag pilots have been hard at work treating mostly vegetables and corn in Ohio the last 50 years.

Talking with Brian, he describes his first season as a natural progression for someone who grew up in the ag aviation industry. “Dad and Grandpa helped a lot during that first season in 2006. For the first time, it was just me

in that cockpit, so the learning curve was definitely there. Having two great mentors just didn’t make the curve so steep.” Brian flew five seasons in the Cessna 188 before the decision was made to purchase an AT-502B (-34) from Lane Aviation in Rosenberg, Texas. Luther, Jr. passed down the AT-400 to Brian, while he flew the AT-502. Brian’s first season in the Air Tractor was 2011. Luther Jr. is an active member of the Ohio Agricultural Aviation Association and Brian, who just completed the Leadership Program offered by NAAA, is ready to start his role with the state and national associations.

Gibbs Aero Spray mainly sprays corn and vegetables on a 5-7 day schedule with fungicide applications at five gallons per acre. Their season is from mid-April to the latter part of September, with the majority of the work being flown in July. Gibbs Aero Spray has also seen an increase in cover crop applications the last three years, which sometimes extends their season into the latter part of September. Today, Luther, Sr. and his wife Eleanor still live on the airport where it all started. A retired Luther, Sr., no longer flying, spends his days watching over his son and grandson as they continue a tradition that he started in the 1950s.

200,000 hectares, seven aircraft and 3,400 flight hours by Bill Lavender Located in the furthermost southwestern area of Brazil in the town of Uruguaiana in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, is a flying service owned and operated by a wife and husband team, Silvia and Nelci Arenhart. Nelci flies and administers the company, while Silvia works as the company agronomist. Dr. Silvia Arenhart is also a professor at Pontifical Univerisidade Católica (PUC) in Uruguaiana. Of the many Brazilian regulations for agoperations, one requires an aerial spraying service to employ an agronomist to help evaluate the weather before an application and any impact it may have on the environment. The company agronomist also helps decide the economic threshold of various pests that may be attacking the crop and when, or if, there is an appropriate time to make an application with the aircraft.

The Arenharts formed Arenhart Aviacão Agricola in 1998. Nelci had been flying for Silvia’s father in Uruguay. Nelci sold his beloved Lancair to buy his first Ipanema to start the company. Today, Arenhart Aviacão Agricola operates six Ipanemas and one Cessna Ag-Truck (IO-550 engine). One of the Ipanemas is a new 2012 model that will start the season this year. Another Ipanema has flown four seasons. Nelci’s brother, Juarez Antonio Arenhart, has already logged over 1,000 hours with it. Arenhart’s ag-planes are outfitted with Satloc GPS units. Four have M3s with Intelliflow flow controls, while the others have older Satlocs. Nelci is planning to update those units to M3s. Another regulation in Brazil is each aircraft must have a service truck and technician assigned to it. For its seven aircraft, Arenhart Aviacão Agricola uses eight service trucks and technicians, with the extra truck and technician used for back up. Arenhart Aviacão Agricola provides housing accommodations for its technicians on its base airstrip a few kilometers from Uruguaiana. Pilots live in nearby Uruguaiana. There are five competing ag-aviation companies in the area, plus two private companies that exclusively fly over their own farms. Arenhart Aviacão Agricola treats only rice during the growing season and seeds some pastures in the off season of April through July. Rice flying starts the end of August with glyphosate applications to kill winter weeds. For these types of applications, T-Jet nozzles are used applying at 20 liters/hectare. Four of the

aircraft are set up this way and dedicated for this type of flying during this time. As the rice grows, as many as two applications of dry urea fertilizer are applied at 60 kg/ha. Two different types of spreaders are used, depending on the application requirements. One is the Transland-built Swathmaster that produces a superior pattern approximately 20 meters wide. However, for the older Ipanemas, the Omaer spreader, built by Omaer Oficina de Manutencão in São Sepé, RS, Brazil, is used. It is made of fiberglass instead of the heavier stainless steel of the Swathmaster and is more aerodynamic. For the older Ipanemas, the Omaer works better because it does not slow the aircraft as much as a Swathmaster spreader. Its swath is approximately 1819 meters wide. typical application rates are 15 l/ha with a 16-meter swath, while with T-Jet nozzles the application rate is 20 l/ha with a 15-meter swath. During the season, six Arenhart Aviacão Agricola aircraft are in the air with one being held in reserve for busier times and back up for when aircraft an may need servicing. Each aircraft averages treating about 30,000 hectares a year while logging 500-600 hours each. The total logged time for all aircraft in the 2010-2011 season exceeded 3,400 hours. One of Arenhart Aviacão Agricola’s major expenses is av-gas. Fuel is bought in bulk tanker truck loads and split with neighboring operators. In 2012, fuel cost was about $3 reais per liter. The Ipanemas average burning about 68 liters per hour. This equates to a fuel cost of more than $200 reais per hour. This would mean the company’s fuel bill for the 2011-2012 season was almost $700,000 reais! There are six, full time pilots working

with Nelci. He handles the overload with the back up aircraft. If the weather improves for the 2012-2013 season, unlike the drought experienced this past season, Nelci plans to hire a seventh pilot to fly the back up aircraft while he manages the company from his desk. Nelci realizes with so many aircraft working at once, good ground operations and fleet management is important. Like many multi-aircraft ag-operators, Nelci “dreams” of operating Arenhart Aviacão Agricola with as few as three larger ag-aircraft. However, he believes his airstrips are too rough for the larger aircraft. The company flies from 10 satellite airstrips with an average ferry distance to the field of about seven kilometers. At the airstrips, the fertilizer is manually loaded into the Ipanemas from 25 kg bags. Sometimes a farmer will have a boom and bag system to help with the loading. All the airstrips have a water supply. Each service truck carries with it to the airstrip a spare set of booms, a spreader, fuel and pumps. Everybody, trucks, technicians, planes and pilots return to the main base each night. The aircraft are parked inside one hangar. Nelci says the hangar is getting crowded and is considering building another one. Arenhart Aviacão Agricola is a successful rice operation. With its seven planes working from as many as 10 airstrips, it is no wonder its owner, Nelci Arenhart is considering hiring a seventh pilot while he manages the company. When is comes to making important application decisions during that management, undoubtedly, it must help that the company agronomist is Nelci’s wife, Silvia!

aviation businessmen, pilots, technicians and even representatives of Brazilian government agencies in support of agricultural aviation in Brazil. Agricultural aviation in Brazil currently has about 1,600 aircraft, divided between 350 public companies and 120 farm-owned companies with their own airplanes. “The industry should grow by 7% this year,” says SINDAG President Nelson Paim. The event was a major

Brazilian SINDAG president visits U.S. by Bill Lavender During my many trips to Brazil over the last 17 years, I have always been well received. Brazilian ag-operators and pilots went out of their way, stopping whatever they were doing, to accommodate me. In July of this year, I was able to reciprocate, albeit in a very small way, for those visits. Nelson Paim, Tucano Aviación Agrícola, is an operator based in Primavera do Leste, Mato Grosso Brazil. He operates two AT-402s and is about to take delivery of a third aircraft, an AT502. He also serves, now in his second term, as the president of SINDAG, the Brazilian equivalent of the NAAA. when he asked if he could visit AgAir Update and a few local operators, I was pleased to say yes. To give Nelson a better scope of ag aviation in the Southeast, we needed to travel outside of Georgia. In a whirlwind tour, counting the AgAir Update offices in Georgia, we visited four operations and three support businesses in five states in one day. Our excursion started with its first stop at Kimmell Insurance Agency in Greenwood, Mississippi. Although U.S. ag-av insurance agents can’t write insurance in Brazil, Frank Kimmel welcomed us and allowed the use of his truck to visit his brother Mark Kimmel

revolutionary SATLOC GPS to Brazilian ag operators. We drove the short distance from the Greenwood Airport to Mark Kimmel’s operation. Mark had advised me that his airstrip had received several inches of rain in the last couple of days and may not be suitable for AgAir Update’s aircraft. Upon arrival, Mark welcomed us into his office where he explained how Dixie Dusters and Sprayers used variable rate technology for both wet and dry applications. This technology is not yet available in Brazil and was the primary reason for our stop at Mark’s. After a brief explanation of the benefits of variable rate and prescription applications, Mark showed Nelson how the system was installed on his aircraft. Dixie Dusters and Sprayers’ AT-502 is outfitted with Air Repair’s hydraulic system and gate box. It also uses the Hemisphere GPS G4 to “talk” to the system. According to pilot David Habig, the aircraft has Internet access that is used to transfer log and job data collected on the G4.

You could tell Nelson was impressed. He operates in the middle of cotton country in Brazil. There are other crops, like corn and soybeans, grown as well. The fields are extremely large. Many farms are well over 250,000 acres, some as many as 750,000 acres and more. There are spray runs that will range from six miles (10 kilometers) to over ten miles (about 15 kilometers). If there ever was a place where prescription technology would work, in fields this vast in size, the Mato Grosso would be the place. With this size fields and application rates of one gallon per acre, Nelson’s AT402s average treating more than 600-700 acres an hour.

the best history lesson comes directly from Mr. Dick. Graham and I did a short video interview with Mr. Dick that Nelson was able to sit-in on. We discussed how Mr. Dick flew P-38s over the Pacific during World War II; how he came back after the war to start a flying service with Stearmans and to eventually operate Ag-Cats, which he was instrumental in naming. Our interview talked about how Mr. Dick was the first president of NAAA

Departing Greenwood, we flew north to Hayti, Missouri. watched as a visiting operator loaded his AT-802 to the brim and easily climbed over the trees at the end of the runway on an almost 100°F day.

Dry loader trucks are uncommon in Brazil. The rice work is in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, a very long way from where Nelson operates. The aircraft there are loaded by hand or with overhead bags using boom trucks.

With just a short flight further south, we landed at Columbia, Louisiana where Reed Keahey of Keahey Flying Service was waiting to take us to the “river house”. Owners of the river house and the flying service, Drew and Becky Keahey, were busy preparing the night’s dinner. To our surprise, upon entering their beautiful second home on the banks of the Ouachita River, we were greeted by several guests, including a state senator and his wife, Drew’s mom Marie Keahey, his other son Zack, Reed’s girlfriend Nicole, Grant Lane of Lane Aviation and Louisiana operator, Scotty and Megan Meador. It was quite a welcoming committee for Nelson.

When Nelson asked Barry which Air Tractor did he like best, the AT-602 or the AT-802, Barry smiled. “I fly the AT-802. I try to cover as many acres as possible with it. For the AT-802 to fit in my operation, it has to turn out the work.” The answer was obvious, the AT-802.

After an excellent Mexican lunch (it was important to introduce Nelson to all forms of American culinary!), we departed south for Arkansas. Our destination was De Witt where Barry Wilson of Wil-Co Flying Service is based. Barry operates two AT-602s and one AT-802. He also has a modern

Help spread the word about NAAREF’s new pilot rescue DVD Ag pilots tend to be fastidious in their planning and preparation before a spraying job. They check the weather, monitor wind conditions, inspect the aircraft, verify the work order and make sure the right chemicals are being mixed for the job. The offseason brings opportunities for continuing education, such as the PAASS Program for safety education and training. When spring is in the air, ag pilots are too, gearing up for the busy season by having their spray equipment inspected at an Operation S.A.F.E. calibration clinic. These are but a few of the many ways aerial applicators get themselves ready for a new assignment and a new season. A less obvious component of that prep work is preparing other people for your season. This could include residents in your community, but more importantly should include local law enforcement, fire and rescue personnel and EMTs—anyone likely to respond at the scene in the unlikely event of an ag aircraft accident.

NAAREF’s “First Response” video is available for purchase and dissemination to emergency/first responder organizations. The single copy price is $15, shipping included. Multiple copies are $10 each. Call (202) 546-5722 to order copies for use in your community.

Knowing what to do in the critical moments immediately after a pesticide-related aircraft accident is vital for the safety of the pilot, the public and the emergency personnel involved at the accident scene. A new DVD is the perfect training tool for operators and ag pilots to use to provide such guidance. Last spring the National Agricultural Aviation Research & Education Foundation (NAAREF) provided all FAR Part 137 operators with a free copy of its new training video, “First Response: Responding to a Pesticide-Related Aircraft Accident.” NAAA’s sister organization distributed the 22-minute video to operators to get it into the hands of as many emergency first responders as possible.

More than a decade ago, a tragic ag aircraft accident occurred in which the pilot was critically injured. The first responders to the site were afraid to render medical assistance because of the unknown toxicity of materials in the hopper. They also refused to transport the injured pilot in the ambulance for fear of contaminating the vehicle and making it unusable until it was decontaminated. The pilot succumbed to his injuries.

NAAREF spent considerable time and invested substantial resources to produce the “First Response” video. Having familiarity with the aerial application industry and its equipment will aid decision-making and facilitate the rescue and cleanup process. In the event of an accident, first responders will have knowledge of how to identify and handle crop protection products while reducing exposure to themselves and any victims in the aircraft.

B-6

agairupdate.com

That stark reminder is why NAAREF suggests making the “First Response” training video available to all emergency/first responder organizations in your area. This can be accomplished by supplying a copy of the video for their training library, but a more preferable method would be to participate in their first responder training. Emergency responders are generally glad to receive training in subjects such as this as part of their required recurrent training. They welcome the chance to view the aircraft up close and gain firsthand knowledge from those involved in agricultural aviation. NAAREF understands the first responders’ primary responsibility is to protect the safety of the public as well as

their own while completing the rescue of the injured party. They are trained to avoid an unknown substance which may be hazardous. The “First Response” video offers methods for identifying the chemical more quickly. Once the product is identified, the responder no longer needs to treat it as an unknown hazard. In some cases, the aircraft is not carrying chemical—it may be empty or carrying something benign, such as seed. The video points out once the substance is identified, a chemical label or MSDS may be consulted for cautions which should be used when handling these materials. It also tries to ease some of the first responder’s fears by explaining the chemical label specifies the personal protective equipment (PPE) to be used while handling undiluted chemical. The mixture in the hopper has generally been diluted many times from the undiluted form. With many agricultural chemicals, the required PPE may be as simple as long pants, longsleeved shirt, shoes with socks and chemical resistant gloves.

AmSafe air restraint system if the aircraft is so equipped. Additional copies of the video are available for purchase from NAAREF by emailing information@agaviation.org or by calling (202) 546-5722. The single copy price is $15, shipping included. Multiple copies are $10 each. Checks should be payable to NAAREF.

your life or the life of someone else in the industry. Help NAAREF reach the masses by sharing it with the emergency response units in your area.

in my opinion

Bullet proof A few years ago I wrote an “In My Opinion” column (IMO) about ag pilot “Wannabes.” Recently, I was rereading some of my old IMO essays and in one of them I mentioned the opposite of the “wannabes”, the ag pilot who thinks they are bullet proof. Bullet proof pilots, simply put, think they are immune to accidents. Especially those that result from pilot error. I feel this bullet proof syndrome is more prevalent among the young and

highly skilled. In the previous IMO article, I mentioned possible warning signs of wannabe ag pilots. Now, to contrast, I would like to list possible traits or warning signs of “bullet proof” ag pilots. Of course, I need to strongly emphasize I certainly am not qualified to judge a pilot’s psychological make-up regarding their flying characteristics, but I have been teaching ag aviation for 14 years. I have seen every walk of life come through our school and each one with a very unique personality. We have not lost many novice ag pilots, but there have been a few. When I hear of a pilot-error accident involving one of my former students, I dig up the comments from my knee board notes or from my formal critique, especially if that pilot had

been one of my turbine transition students. Oftentimes a trend emerges and new student ag pilots who exhibit some of these traits get my attention.

• Is willing to fly when inclement weather is approaching or with poor visibility. • Has somewhat of a cocky, know-it-all attitude.

• Young, in their early 20s. • Skillful in handling the airplane. • Taxis a little too fast. • Attempts to turn too fast and then brag about it to other students. • Seemingly over confident. Confidence in one’s flying abilities is very important, but sometimes it may border on over confidence, which may lead a problem.

• Tells others that he has a better (faster) way to turn the airplane around than the way we are teaching. When I have a student who tends to move in the direction the traits stated characterize, it gives me reservations regarding his safety. I tell them if they think they are bullet proof, just look at the burn scars on my arms; there was a time when I thought I was bullet proof, too. Turned out, I wasn’t, nor was the Pawnee I was flying! Be safe, have fun, and make money.

God’s extravagant provision for believers in Jesus Christ “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1). Paul said that Abraham and David were made righteous in God’s eyes by believing what God had promised apart from any ordinances, law, or religious traditions (Romans 4:1-24).

Abraham experienced God’s righteousness by faith over 400 years before the Law was given to Moses and David experienced God’s righteousness by faith while the Law of Moses was active in the lives of the Hebrew people (Genesis 15:1-6, Psalm 32:1-2). What a glorious experience it is to be declared righteous in the eyes of God by believing

in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Our eternal salvation is secure because it is based on what God has done for us through His Son, Jesus Christ. “Jesus Christ plus nothing equals eternal life in God’s heaven.” Jesus said, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior gives us peace with God that is secure and permanent without our keeping any religious rules or traditions. Jesus Christ fulfilled the Law of Moses and nailed it to the Cross and has forgiven all our sins (Colossians 2:11-15). We will miss the mark of perfection in our life because of the weakness of our sinful flesh (Romans 8:1-4). But our faith in Jesus Christ hasn’t wavered; we are still trusting and believing in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Our peace with God is eternal because it is based upon our faith in Jesus Christ—not our works—because our works are like filthy rags in God’s eyes (Isaiah 64:6). Jesus Christ is the author and finisher

of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). And what Jesus Christ starts He will complete (Philippians 1:6). “Through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand” (Romans 5:2). By faith in Jesus Christ we have access to God. Jesus fulfilled all the requirements of the law (Matthew 5:17), and Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). Jesus Christ is our sacrifice, “He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice

of Himself…so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many (Hebrews 9:26). Jesus Christ is our high priest, “We have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God” (Hebrews 4:14). Because our faith is in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, “We rejoice in hope of the glory of God” (Romans 5:2). God has promised that all true Christians are going to share in the glory of His eternal kingdom. Jesus prayed, “The glory which You gave Me I have given them,

that they may be one just as We are one” (John 17:22). “When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory” (Colossians 3:4). Many times we are so aware of our own failures we feel that we have no right to come to God. But that isn’t so! Our access to God isn’t based upon our living a perfect life; our access to God is based upon God’s faithfulness to us when we put our faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. “We can come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16). God’s gift to humanity cannot be deserved or earned; God’s gift to humanity is because of His love and grace, and has nothing to do with human works and traditions. The word “abundance” describes that God’s gift to Christians is beyond anything we could ask for or imagine. If you don’t truly believe this with all your heart and mind you will never fully trust God and serve Him with all your heart, mind, strength and soul. And you will always

be straddling the fence, lukewarm and mired in half-hearted obedience and service to God. God’s gift to humanity is not a list of rules that you have to obey to earn your way into His kingdom; it is a gift that any person can freely receive. It doesn’t belong to any tradition, to any denomination, to any language group, to any race, to any ethnicity, or to any nationality. The kingdom of God is open to every person—all people. It is an extravagant provision for all of humanity who will believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. “And as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name (John 1:12). The Roman Centurion asked Jesus to heal his sick slave and Jesus said, “I will go and heal him.” The Centurion said, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.” When Jesus heard it He marveled, and said to those who followed, “Assuredly,

I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel! Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed that same hour” (Matthew 8:513). This centurion recognized that Jesus Christ ruled both the physical and spiritual world and placed himself under the power of Jesus Christ and received supernatural healing for his slave. You can see supernatural works in your own life when you place all your circumstances totally in the control of Jesus Christ. You can be religious and go to church every time the doors are open, give your tithes and offerings, sing every song, know the Bible from front to back, keep all the church and denominational rules, and still miss the power and authority of Jesus Christ in your life. Jesus said, “He who believes in Me, the works that I do he will so also” (John 14:12). Don’t let religious activity and church traditions cause you to miss out on God’s supernatural power working in your life.

The next generation? There have been a lot of questions and speculation about the next generation of ag pilots. Who will they be? Where will they come from? Will they be strong enough to carry on the legacy of the generations before them? I had a glimpse into what may be the future of the industry. I have to say that it was inspiring.

heavy doses of ag aviation, even before their birth. Possibly through genetics and exposure, Briar has become infected with the flying bug. She discusses her goal matter-of-factly and shrugs off the nay-sayers. “Just because you don’t see any girl crop dusters doesn’t mean there can’t be any. Your gender should have nothing to do with it. It’s my dream and I’m gonna follow my dream,” she says.

In Northern California where ag flying is a part of everyday life, there is one young lady who looks skyward with dreams of one day being an ag pilot. Briar Ponciano, the youngest daughter of Karen Williams-Martell and the granddaughter of Clarence Williams of

Williams Ag Service in Biggs, California heard the roar of ag-airplane engines possibly before she heard her own mother’s voice. Briar’s mom, Karen, grew up flagging rice fields and has spent most of her adult life tending to the office for her father’s operation. Her children, consequently, were exposed to

She’s not quite fifteen and while most girls her age are day dreaming of the mall and movie stars, Briar is preoccupied with thoughts of airplanes and airports. An honor-role student who prefers fishing over shopping, she would rather have an airplane than a car. She’s active in the FFA, 4H and sports and admits to being more comfortable in the air than on the ground. Having flown several times before, she particularly recalls flying with her “Papa” at age seven. That was when flying became real to her and the dream of one day doing it was born. “I like being up there. It’s so cool! The more I get to fly, the more it makes me

searching out the sky until she finds it is a good indication that Briar is one of those souls who was born to the air. want to fly.” I guess there are a lot of us who can relate to that feeling. Her mother takes Briar’s flying ambition to heart, but wrings her hands with a touch of anxiety when they talk about her becoming an ag pilot. It’s not a common goal for a young lady just entering high school. Even her teachers comment about it with a raised eyebrow. Yet, they, like many others, admire her for setting an objective and working toward it. Of course, a college degree is a mandatory requirement set down by her parents and grandparents, so no matter what she does she knows she’ll have to incorporate that into her plans. But seeing her instinctively looking up at the sound of an airplane and

It’s just plane smart.

I think that there are many of us who can recall the sunny days of our youth when the dream of flying was a tantalizing prospect on the horizon of our lives. I can recall a clear Oklahoma morning, peering through an old barb wire fence next to a wide field of neat rows and seeing a crop duster work. The sounds of that old radial engine were a siren song to a young mind and the graceful patterns of that faded yellow airplane were nothing less than magic. I know there are many youngsters who, one way or another, feel the tug of flying into the sky and swooping low across endless fields of green. Whether born into it or brought to it through happenstance, it’s good to see that the magic of flying, particularly ag flying, is still out there and is inviting those who have the will and the desire to be a part of it.

“You can’t find a slow release nitrogen product that’s easier to handle and easier on the equipment. We piggyback aerial applications of KQ-XRN with fungicides with good results. No other products fit our system as well as Kugler products.”

I hope as we progress, these youngster will come forth and give us the opportunity to take them under our wing and introduce them to the world of ag aviation. I hope we will take the time to do so. With all the advances in technology and communications, and given the generation gaps that exist in operating all the new gadgets and gizmos, these kids are just what we need to carry us on into the Star Trek days of tomorrow. Who knows what the future will hold. One thing is for sure; a dream should never be allowed to wither on the vine. As Briar Ponciano might say, “Girls can fly too ya know!”

New interactive website helps avoid pesticide drift problems PIERRE, S.D. – A new online mapping tool is available for agricultural producers in South Dakota who grow crops and livestock that are particularly sensitive to pesticide drift, such as organic production areas and vineyards.

Apiary sites are included on the site through the Apiary Program. Apiary owners do not need to register on the website.

The tool is intended for commercial producers of those crops and to inform pesticide applicators of sensitive areas. The website is not intended for homeowners. Hardy_AgAirUpdate_38Pg_Color_07_HardyAvIns_AgAirUpdate_38Pg_02 12/12/11 11:30 AM Page

The South Dakota Department of Agriculture (SDDA) has developed the South Dakota Sensitive Site Registry, which can be used to help prevent adverse drift effects during pesticide or fertilizer operations. The South Dakota Sensitive Site Registry allows producers of crops that are sensitive to pesticides to register and enter their contact information, include their field data, and identify the crop on an online map. The site can be accessed through SDDA Office of Agricultural Services webpage, sdda.sd.gov/ Ag_Services/

Programs/Regulatory_Compliance_Enforcement/default. aspx Agriculture is South Dakota’s No. 1 industry, generating nearly $21 billion in annual economic activity and employing more than 80,000 South Dakotans. The South Dakota Department of Agriculture’s mission is to promote, protect, preserve and improve this industry for today and tomorrow. Visit us online at http://sdda.sd.gov or follow us on Facebook and Twitter. Source: South Dakota Department of Agriculture

Pesticide applicators can indicate their service area and reference the map to identify any pesticide sensitive sites in that area. GPS units compatible with the GPX format can download a GPS file with the outline of all sensitive sites (including apiaries) in a specified service area. Producers of pesticidesensitive crops and livestock are encouraged to register their sensitive production areas on the website. When a sensitivesite producer registers a production area, an email is sent to each applicator who has registered a service area including that production location. Licensed commercial pesticide applicators are encouraged to register their service areas. Certified private pesticide applicators are encouraged to register their production areas if, after looking at the map, they discover a sensitive site close enough to their production areas that drift may be a concern. In 2011, SDDA investigated 64 reported drift cases. From 2007 to 2011, the department investigated 308 reported drift incidents. The Write Stuff — Fine-tuning your maintenance record entries by Tom Hoffmann After a grueling nine-hour shift, you breathe a sigh of relief while putting the finishing touches on an Ag-Cat annual inspection. The job was anything but routine, requiring a lengthy struggle with stripped access panel fasteners, a tricky tail wheel tire replacement, and a few ugly corrosion repairs. After polishing a mirror-like shine on the spinner, you glance at your watch and wince at the prospect of being late for dinner again. Knowing the customer is eager to fly the next day, and since no major repairs or alterations were needed, you quickly document the inspection as completed in the maintenance logbook and note that the aircraft can return to service. Done?

Annual Inspection Hot Section Inspection Gear Box Inspection Nozzle Cleaning & Flowing

   

Hmm, not so fast. Despite your disdain for microwaved meatloaf, there are some additional items to consider before you close the logbook and punch out. For example, did you double check your entry, ensuring it follows the language of the regulation found in Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) section 43.11? How descriptive was your entry of the inspection? In this case, it sounds like it may have lacked some important details. Finally, how legible is your entry? Your personal blend of acronyms and abbreviations might make perfect sense to you, but will someone unfamiliar with what was done be able to read and understand everything?

More Is Better “The importance of making good maintenance record entries can sometimes get lost in the shuffle of an Aviation Maintenance Technician’s (AMT) daily routine,” says FAA Airworthiness Inspector David Keen. “It’s always good to have clear, complete and descriptive entries to ensure all the hard work you perform is properly documented and remains a vital part of that aircraft’s history.” In the example above, it’s possible to assume you have met all the regulatory requirements for returning the aircraft to service in an airworthy condition after an annual inspection. But let’s not forget about documenting the corrective actions you also performed.

While some of these actions would seem purely cosmetic, failing to document the specifics of these items can cause confusion and muddy the waters of an aircraft’s maintenance history. Also, work that is not documented makes it difficult for a future AMT or repairmen to know what components or systems may have been previously affected or altered. This can have deadly consequences.

also be supplied to the owner. (See 14 CFR section 43.11 for specifics)

Put it in Writing

Another area often overlooked in maintenance records upkeep is the aircraft equipment list. The equipment list is a snapshot of an aircraft’s specific configuration, and it is vital to airworthiness. Alterations made to an aircraft—even minor ones—can impact, and often invalidate weight and balance information if the equipment list is not kept in sync with any changes. Even if the work performed (e.g., swapping out a radio) does not change the weight of the aircraft, the equipment list should still reflect any change that is made. This also

So just what does a good maintenance record entry entail? In a nutshell, the regulations require that maintenance records answer the three basic questions of what, when, and who. More specifically, they must contain a description of the work or inspection performed, the date it was completed, along with the signature, certificate number, and type of certificate held by the person approving the aircraft (or part) for return to service. Inspections require some additional information, including the aircraft’s total time in service and, if the aircraft is found to be unairworthy, a list of discrepancies must

“In several instances, I’ve seen an invoice be a lot more descriptive than the accompanying maintenance record entry,” says Keen. “That’s a definite red flag.” Keen advises AMTs to make logbook entries as thorough as their invoices to ensure sufficient detail.

Major Repairs and Alterations

A common practice among AMTs today to show proof of their work, as well as indicate the condition of a component or part following a sign-off, is to take datestamped photographs and include them as part of that aircraft’s maintenance history. You may also want to make a

In addition to recording inspections and routine maintenance performed on an aircraft, AMTs must also remember to document any major repairs or alterations as part of the aircraft’s permanent record. Form 337 is used to record these repairs and must be filed with the aircraft’s records as well as

the FAA Aircraft Registration branch in Oklahoma City, OK. Keep in mind that in addition to the 337, AMTs must also make an accompanying logbook entry that references the major repair or alteration. Additional information on filling out a Form 337 is provided in Advisory Circular (AC) 43-9, Aircraft Maintenance Records.

Keep it Simple To aid with your logbook entry efficiency (and perhaps prevent the onset of writer’s cramp), the FAA allows

maintenance record entries to refer back to data and procedures found in other documents. However, what you can reference depends on what type of work is being performed. Minor repairs and alterations need only reference “acceptable data” such as the manufacturer’s maintenance manual or information in AC 43.13 Acceptable Methods, Techniques, and Practices— Aircraft Inspection and Repair. Major repairs and alterations must refer to “approved data” such Standard Ad as ADs, Supplemental Type Certificates (STC), or FAAapproved Service Bulletins (SB). (Note: Under certain circumstances, major repairs can reference a specific example from AC 43.13). In either case, referencing these documents saves time and helps preserve clarity and consistency with your records.

The Bottom Line The importance of entering good maintenance records cannot be emphasized enough. Besides the many safety aspects, sound record-keeping can also have a significant effect on the owner or operator’s confidence in your workmanship. So the next time you’ve completed a job, don’t let your hard work be for naught by not documenting it with a proper record entry. “Although properly documenting your actions may

sometimes seem less important than the work itself,” cautions Keen, “a lack of detail with records may endanger not only the operator of that aircraft, but can endanger and implicate you as well.” The meatloaf can wait. electronic records. Another useful tool in the effort to keep maintenance records more organized and complete is the use of electronic records. While their usage is growing, many electronic record systems do not meet the signature requirements in 14 CFR sections 43.9 and 91.417. Aircraft owners/operators are ultimately responsible for the airworthiness of their aircraft, which means they must also ensure any system used to track and record maintenance (electronic or written) complies with the appropriate regulations and reflects the work accurately.

Off the grid by Bill Lavender When Hawke Dusters was founded in 1927, it was one of the first ag-operations in California. Although Hawke Dusters is no longer in business, it was also the first ag operation that Steven Sperry, owner of Hawke Ag Aviation, worked for as a youngster. Steve’s dad, Jack, flew Stearmans for Hawke Dusters from 1952 to 1973.

Over the next ten years, Steve and Gari built up Hawke Ag Aviation’s business bringing in their son, Shane, in 1995 to fly for them. Shane’s wife, Rosalyn, also came to work with the company as its scheduler and bookkeeper.

Steve flew his first year for the Merced, California mosquito abatement program. After that, he went to work flying for Milt Taylor from 1986 to 1991 with the bulk of the flying at night.

Before Shane came to work at Hawke Ag Aviation, Steve taught him how to fly in their Cessna C-140. Steve made an agreement with Shane that he would have to finish college before he could fly for Hawke Ag Aviation. Steve made good on the agreement when Shane graduated from college. He bought a 600 HP Thrush from Daryl Frye at Lakeland Dusters in Corcoran and mentored Shane in it. Father and son flew the two 600 HP Thrushes for several years before they bought their first TPE-331-5 powered Thrush.

In 1992, Steve and his wife, Gari, bought a 600 HP Thrush and loader truck from Taylor to form Hawke Ag Aviation near Oakdale on the eastern edge of the Central Valley of California.

Hawke Ag Aviation’s fleet has grown to two Goering conversion TPE-331-5 powered Thrushes with 525-gallon hoppers and one with a “turtle back”. The fleet also includes two 600 Hp

During those times, often flaggers wouldn’t show up for work on Saturday after being paid Friday. That’s when Jack put Steve on notice he was needed to flag, or load, this before he was even a teenager.

Thrushes. One of the 600 HP Thrushes is a Super 600 that is being refurbished in the Hawke Ag Aviation shop. The other 600 HP Thrush is the first one Steve bought from Milt Taylor and that he still sprays with. Steve points to one of the control boxes where wind and solar power is converted to readily available AC electricity to run the operation.

In 2001, Hawke Ag Aviation set up operations at its current location a few miles southeast of Oakdale. Steve and Gari bought the land for the airstrip and an almond orchard. They didn’t realize, because the land was off the power grid, the cost to run power to the operation would be prohibitive. So, for about $40,000, they designed and built their own power source from solar and wind. Hawke Ag Aviation has never paid for electricity from a power company.

Power for lighting, air-conditioning and other 115-volt and 240volt demands come from a wind generator and solar panels. The power these units develop is stored in 32 deep cycle Trojan 6-volt batteries (golf cart type) that are connected in series and can store 1,600-amp hours of power. The batteries funnel power through two 48-volt inverters that can produce 115-volt and 240-volt AC current that is distributed through a 200-amp electrical panel. Twelve solar panels are mounted on a frame that tilts and tracks the sun. A liquid ballast transfers weight from one side to the other as the sun heats it, in turn moving the solar panel frame in a way to optimize the un’s rays.

The Sperry’s take a break in the Hawke Ag Aviation office: Shane and Rosalyn with Steve on the right.

The wind generator supplies power to the Trojan batteries whenever there is enough wind to turn the blades. Either the wind generator or the solar panels are charging batteries. If there is a shortage of stored power, a 15 kW backup generator is used to charge the batteries. It is powered by propane, but rarely used. Not only is Hawke Ag Aviation operating “off the grid”, all of its empty chemical containers are cleaned and recycled. Most chemicals used are delivered in small one, two and a half and five-gallon plastic containers in cardboard boxes. The cardboard boxes are broken down and flattened so they can be picked up by the recycling company, along with the plastic containers.

Around back of the hangar is the wind generator on its tower and the 12 solar panels mounted on a rack that tracks the sun.

The challenge to operate a flying service “off the grid” did not stop once a power solution was reached. In California, permitting has to be done for just about every aspect of a business. Before September 11, 2001, the state of California considered Hawke Ag Aviation’s hangar to be a farm storage building refusing to permit the building as a hangar. However after 9-11, the government reconsidered realizing it was a good idea for ag-aircraft to be in a secure hangar, the same building that before was considered a farm storage building. Part of the state permitting process requires Hawke Ag Aviation to have 48,000 gallons of water storage for fire protection. This requirement has worked in the company’s favor by using the fire protection water for the spraying operation’s mixing. It is nearly impossible, today, for a flying service to obtain all the permits and licenses needed to establish a fixed wing operation in California. Not only did Steve and Gari build a successful flying operation on about 450 acres of land, they have planted and raised 380 acres of almond trees, along with 60 acres of open ground that has been planted in wheat. Almond trees are a high-end crop, yielding about 2,000 pounds of nuts per acre from 121 trees grown on each acre. It takes three to four years after planting for the tree to produce. There are multiple varieties planted to stagger the pollination period and harvest time. The pollination is done with rented bees and require two hives per acre.

With literally millions of bees at work during pollination, it is a testament to Hawke Ag Aviation to be able to work hand in hand with bee keepers to produce a crop. The almond trees are exclusively sprayed by Hawke Ag Aviation aircraft. The almond tree spraying starts the end of February with bloom sprays and lasts until the end of March. Fungicides, miticides and insecticides are also applied during the growing season. The almonds are harvested in August.

Not only does Hawke Ag Aviation treat its own almond orchards, it also treats rice, alfalfa, wheat, grain, corn, walnuts and pasture for its customers. Growers are required by California law to use of a crop consultant for chemical applications made by someone other than the grower. However, the Sperry’s use a crop consultant for their almonds spraying to help transfer a portion of the liability associated with ordering a spray job.

A Super 600 being totally refurbished before entering the Hawke Ag Aviation fleet.

Aerial applicators have always been a creative group when it comes to challenges. They modify their aircraft to suit the job at hand. They diversify when needed to better serve their customers. In the case of Hawke Ag Aviation, being off the power grid and overcoming the hurdles of operating a flying service in a regulatory laden state like California, only adds to its challenges. Hawke Ag Aviation and the Sperry’s have done an excellent job, successfully meeting them head-on.

reported that there were no failures or malfunctions related to the helicopter prior to the accident. NTSB Identification: *WPR12CA236* Date: May 30, 2012 Location: Burbank, WA Aircraft: BELL 206B Injuries: 1 Uninjured. The pilot stated that as he was flying low over the apple orchard and rolled out of a turn, the engine began to lose power, which was accompanied by the engine out horn and light. He decreased his airspeed towards zero, and performed a hovering autorotation into the orchard. During the landing the rotor blades impacted the trees and the tail boom separated from the main fuselage. An examination of the engine revealed that Pc air tube that connects the Pc air filter to to the Power Turbine Governor (PTG) was disconnected. The b-nut that connects the tube to the Pc air filter was present on the tube but not threaded onto the Pc air filter boss. Review of the maintenance records showed that about six hours prior to the accident the

turbine assembly and bleed valve had been replaced. The threads on both the Pc air filter and b-nut did not exhibit any damage or abnormalities. The removal and reinstallation of the Pc air tube was conducted as part of the documented maintenance. According to the engine manufacturer’s technical representative, the disconnection of the Pc air tube during engine operation would result in a loss of engine power. NTSB Identification: *WPR12CA242* Date: June 03, 2012 Location: Riverton, WY Aircraft: GRUMMAN G-164A Injuries: 1 Uninjured. The pilot, who was flying a tail wheel equipped agricultural aerial application airplane, was landing on a dirt strip in order to take on a load of application chemical. landing in uneven terrain near Riverton, Wyoming.

According to the pilot, he was departing the local airstrip to perform aerial application. Approximately 100 feet above ground level (agl), the pilot felt a vibration from the engine and a partial loss of engine power. The pilot dumped the load of fertilizer and performed a forced landing to a field. The airplane came to rest upright in a wheat field and a postimpact fire ensued. The fire consumed the airplane.

The pilot reported that he departed a dirt strip. Shortly thereafter, he observed movement of the torque and temperature gauges to high values. The engine did not respond to his speed or power lever inputs. He stated that the linkage and amount of travel of the controls felt normal, but the engine did not follow the control movement.

Post accident examination of the airplane revealed a crack in the number five cylinder on the Pratt & Whitney R-1340 engine. The engine was retained for further examination. NTSB Identification: *WPR12LA256* Date: June 11, 2012 Location: Riverton, WY Aircraft: AYRES S2R-G6 Injuries: 1 Uninjured. On June 11, 2012 an Ayres Corporation S2R-G6 made an off airport forced

The fuel control unit had previously been removed when it failed to move from a midrange power setting. Following testing and replacement of a valve, the unit was reinstalled on the airplane. No adjustments had been made to the unit since that time, and the airplane accumulated about 50 hours prior to the accident flight.

The airplane was departing from a 2,400 foot asphalt runway on an aerial application flight. The airplane was loaded to its maximum gross takeoff weight and configured with 10 degrees of flaps prior to the takeoff roll. The pilot reported that a tall stand of trees at the southeast side of the departure end of the runway blocked the wind and seemed to “create a void in the air” which resulted in an extended takeoff roll. Electing not to abort the takeoff, the pilot added more flaps but the airplane was unable to get airborne. The airplane went off the end of the runway, hit a ditch, and skidded across the road into a field. The landing gear separated from the airframe and the airplane’s fuselage and control surfaces sustained substantial damage. The pilot reported that the airplane did not have a mechanical malfunction during the attempted takeoff.

The purpose of the flight was for the pilot to maneuver low-level over a cherry orchard to help dry the crop. As the helicopter lifted into a hover, the manifold pressure gauge indicated a significant increase and the pilot smelled smoke. The pilot set the helicopter back onto the ramp and observed smoke rolling up the side of the fuselage. He egressed the helicopter rapidly and noticed fire around the engine compartment. The entire airframe was consumed by fire.

Covington AircraftCommitted to a higher standard for 40 years Fresh from serving his country in Vietnam, a Purple Heart recipient and decorated infantry soldier, Paul Abbott attended Letourneau University in Longview, Texas where he received a degree in Aviation Technology. Upon completion of his degree, Paul and his wife Betty loaded all of their belongings into the back of their small car and headed to Okmulgee, Oklahoma (included in their belongings was their infant son Luke wedged between the two seats) where there was a job awaiting him with a small “start-up” missions organization. Once they arrived in Okmulgee, Paul began working at the Okmulgee airport where he fueled planes, cut the grass,

and did odd jobs around the complex all in an attempt to pay off school loans so that they could pursue a career on the mission field. It wasn’t long after he began working at the airport that a man by the name of Bob Covington decided to open a radial engine overhaul facility at the airport where Paul worked. Since the job with the mission organization was ending, Bob hired Paul in 1972 as one of the first three employees. It took several months before Covington Aircraft sold their first overhaul and there were a lot of questions about whether or not the company would succeed. Through a lot of prayer and hard work that first sale came. Then came another and another,

mainly to air cargo companies located throughout the United States, and Covington began to carve out a niche in the aviation industry. In 1975 Paul and Betty became part owners of Covington Aircraft, but they still felt a burden for the mission field. Through prayer and wise council, they felt the calling on their life was to help support missionaries on the mission field as opposed to being “on the field” themselves. For this reason, they began supporting missionaries around the world. Even when they weren’t sure where the money would come from, they remained faithful and honored

the commitments they made to these missionaries. Their desire was to build a business that could help support more and more missionaries. In the late ‘70’s, Paul and Betty became the sole owners of Covington Aircraft and firmed up their commitment of Covington Aircraft to Christ by claiming Matthew 6:33 as their life and business verse. It was during that time that they landed on four key company values that would guide them through their business career: Integrity- Above all else, they would not compromise their integrity, or the integrity of Covington Aircraft for the sake of making a sale. “We will do what we say and will strive to be a Christ-like example to the business world.” DependabilityThe pilots flying Covington engines depend on the engine to help them get their job done, and the family of the pilots depend on the engine to bring their pilot home to them safely each night. not compromise the dependability of their engines by using inferior parts or cutting corners. There is simply too much depending on the engines. Affordability- Covington will do the best job possible while keeping the cost in line with industry standards. Quality Service- Covington will meet and exceed expectations when dealing with the customer. It’s not about gaining customers. It’s about gaining friends and taking care of those friends. Paul and Betty, now the parents of three: Luke, Aaron and CaSandra, used those core values to begin building a business focused on people as opposed to products. They focused on their employees and led by example. In the early days, Paul built blowers and Betty built wiring harnesses in an effort to help keep cost down as well as show the employees the value of hard work and a great attitude (Paul learned this work ethic by growing up on a dairy farm in Iowa and Betty learned the same on a dairy farm in Minnesota).

During the eighties, Covington began to grow and the company was being blessed with great employees and great customers. It was also during this time that Covington began to gain recognition outside the United States. Foreign customers began to seek out Covington Aircraft because they knew they were going to be treated fairly and with respect. They trusted the people at Covington to look out for their best interests. As the Covington “brand” grew and more employees were added it was imperative that the core values were ingrained in all the employees; and at the forefront of those values was Integrity. So Paul and Betty instituted a weekly Chapel service and a company chaplain available to all employees on company time. They felt like it was important to invest in the lives of their employees so that the individual could say their lives were improved by working at Covington Aircraft. During the nineties, Covington added the PT6A engine to its list of capabilities and added a new facility with a hangar at

Paul Abbott circa 1970 Okmulgee Municipal Airport. This was done in an effort to take care of their existing customers who were shifting from radial to turbine powered aircraft. It was at this time that Pratt & Whitney Canada saw the value that Covington Aircraft brought to the Agricultural

market and named Covington their exclusive Agricultural Service Center. In 2010, Covington Aircraft joined a select group of companies in the Pratt & Whitney Canada Distributor and Designated Overhaul Facility (DDOF) network. This allowed Covington the ability to serve the entire PT6A aviation community. Handling warranty claims on behalf of Pratt & Whitney Canada and speeding up turn times for the customer were just some of the benefits to this move. The same core values: Integrity, Dependability, Affordability, & Quality Service that were important to Paul and Betty back in the ‘70’s are the same core values that are important to them today. As Luke, CaSandra and I strive to live up to the Godly example that our parents laid out for us, we’re committed to making sure these core values never change. Now as we celebrate our fortieth anniversary as a company, we’re more

excited than ever about the future of Ag Aviation. We believe the best days of the industry are ahead of all of us, and we look forward to working with you, our customers and friends, in an effort to help you accomplish your business goals. For His Glory, — Aaron Abbott

Australia has successful convention by Phil Hurst Great Convention for AAAA in a beautiful climate in Cairns in Far North Queensland – 150 delegates, great range of speakers including the political, aviation safety, aircraft manufacturers and innovation sessions. The drought has well and truly broken after two good seasons and there is a very positive outlook for the industry. On the downside we have a carbon tax starting at the end of June that will immediately add over 6 cents per litre to both Avgas and Jet A1, windfarms cashing in on big subsidies at the expense of agriculture, government moves to reduce water allocations to ‘save’ the environment (and their marginal city based seats) and the usual safety challenges following a return to high tempo ops – all of which AAAA is working hard to reduce the impact of...

No shortage of issues running in Australia at the moment, including a significant departure in policy by our CASA (your FAA) that unilaterally decided to abandon 40 years of consistent policy allowing agricultural weights beyond the manufacturers certified max T/O weight in accordance with CAM 8 principles. Now all ops are limited to either the flight manual, type certificate data sheet or STC max weights and CAM 8 is not accepted in Australia. There has been plenty of work by AAAA, manufacturers and others on this issue and it appears the only way forward is an STC – at considerable costs to the industry – for each aircraft type affected. And all this for no identifiable safety improvement... Of course the Convention had its usual fun when you get any large number of

ag pilots together – but one of the most positive events was the presentation of the first accreditations under our AIMS program – Aerial Improvement Management System. This is a whole of business approach, backed up with comprehensive manuals, templates and systems, a significant training effort from AAAA and participants and an independent high quality audit. AIMS is a great program that will be recognised by a range of regulators (discussions already underway), chemical companies (already on label for one product) and corporate clients including fire agencies (discussions underway) because it provides an independent sign-off on a company having a safety management system, a drift management system, a quality assurance system and a continuous improvement system.
