Reading Between the Lines I’m wishing all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Many of us are ready to see 2020 come to an end.
A 6 | agairupdate.com
Here it is just before Thanksgiving that I write this editorial for AgAir Update’s December English edition. Inside this edition you will read an article, “A Memorial Tribute to 13 pilots”. I find it a bit odd that the number 13 comes up for this series of tragic and fatal events. In writing the article, I tried to keep it on par for memorializing 13 U.S. pilots and how they came about their ill fate. There is an adage that says, “Read between the lines.” That’s something to think about when you read the article. With no more information than the NTSB reports and what I could find in news articles, I’m willing to take a risk and say at least two of these 13 fatalities did not have to happen. I’m also willing to say that nearly all of us have done what these two did, but if you are reading this you got away with it. They did not. If there is any good that can come from a fatality, it would be a learning exercise. For those of us that can read about their deaths, we should take a solemn oath to not allow ourselves to get into these positions. I once had an operator tell me that more often than not, more ag-pilots are killed close to home or the airstrip than anywhere else. I know this operator did not have data to support his claim over 46 years ago, but I don’t doubt his intentions. He was telling this first year pilot the dangers of flying ag around people you know. We are all subject to it; just a little tighter turn or pull up, or aerobatics on the deck, no less. For those pilots that have attended Wayne Handley’s ag-pilot’s aerobatic course, they know firsthand when an aircraft stalls in a turn, that
amounts to an unusual attitude at low altitude, is unrecoverable. The horror of it is the aircraft typically rolls with a too-late warning and points its nose straight at the ground. When in a high, slow wingover turn, the pilot is betting his life that everything will work out perfectly, no turbulence, no engine failure. And, he’s doing this betting multiple times, all day long. That’s the problem. The pilot becomes really good at these dangerous turns. So good, there’s a degree of complacency. No matter how good the pilot is, he cannot safely recover from a full stall at 300-500 feet. Those are terrible betting odds.
That’s the problem, the pilot becomes really good at these dangerous turns. So good, there’s a degree of complacency. Over the years, I had met most of these 13 pilots. I find it difficult to imagine not meeting them again, ever. My difficulty is nothing compared to the unimaginable difficulty their families are going through. Yes, they are still going through the grieving. You don’t get over the loss of a loved one that is often the breadwinner for the family.

Number one dealer worldwide in sales, service and price! On a much brighter note, if Covid doesn’t kick Georgia in the butt, I hope to see you at AgAir Update’s booth at the NAAA Ag-Aviation Expo in Savannah, December 6-11. I’m not certain, as Graham handles all the coordinating of AgAir Update these days, but I believe there will be a bar between the AgAir Update and Lane Aviation booth. So, there is a good reason to visit since you will be standing in the bar line anyway! In closing, I’m wishing all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Many of us are ready to see 2020 come to an end. I kind of take it as it comes. Just because 2020 ends, doesn’t mean the struggles of 2020 are over. For those of you still flying, especially those south of the Equator and in full swing for your spray season, take a break. Think about why you are doing what you do. Professionalism comes at a price. Sometimes in the immediate future, it is not efficient. However in the overall picture, it is always the best route to take. Until next month, Keep Turning…(But, safely)

Hello Bill, I just wanted to send you a short note of thanks for the mounted REBTECH advertisement you sent this week. I will surely put it up in the reception area here at the office and put it on our booth if we ever do a trade show again. I hope you stay healthy and safe and I look forward to meeting you somewhere down the line. Best regards, Richard M. Borkowski, President REB Technologies, Inc. Bedford, TX Richard Our pleasure to send the ad mount. We started that policy several years ago and it has been a success. It’s also an appreciation of your business. I’m sure we’ll be doing trade shows again in the future. Until then, AAU will be on its toes to represent its advertisers in an effort to offset this issue of trade shows. Take care,—Bill
Long time NAAA member, Richard “Dick” Packer, received two awards from the FAA October 17, The Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award and the Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award. These awards represent 50 or more years in aviation. The presentation was made at the Packer Airport.
Sasin SA-29 Spraymaster The little sprayer was based around the DHC-1 Chipmunk. The ag-pilot designer was Mike Sasin, who called it the Sasin SA-29 Spraymaster. Built at Bankstown, Australia from Chipmunk airframes, with a 50 Imperial gallon (227 liters) hopper that took the place of the original front seat and used the DH Gipsy Major engine with about 145 BHP. VH-GEB was the third and last Spraymaster completed, seen here at Tintinara, South Australia in December of 1967. Submitted by Mike Feeney/New Zealand.

2020 YEAR IN REVIEW
INTERNATIONAL
2020 has, by all accounts, been one of the strangest years on record. Regardless of the sometimes absurd 24/7 news cycle, a global pandemic and a highly-charged U.S. presidential election, AgAir Update brought you features every month on the essential business of agricultural aviation. Traditionally, December is a month where we look back at the previous 11 months of feature articles for the year. To read the individual and complete articles, follow the link provided or use your smartphone to scan the QR code. January 2020
February 2020
In January of 2020, we made an exception to our reminiscing article usually reserved for December. The January edition took stock of everything that happened in 2019, including a first-ever NAAA Ag Aviation Expo held in November.
The February 2020 edition featured Target Airspray and was written by a new writer to the pages of AgAir Update, Ted Delanghe. Ted traveled to Canadian operator Darren Tiede’s operation just east of Calgary, Alberta. Target Airspray was started in the mid-1960s by Darren’s dad, Ralph. Today, Darren operates three Thrush 510Ps and serves as the president of the Canadian Aerial Applicators Association since 2019.

May 2020
The Mach 2020 edition of AgAir Update celebrated women in the aerial application industry. March is traditionally women in aviation month, and AgAir Update took that a step further and celebrated the dedicated female pilots in ag aviation.
In the year of the Coronavirus, an operator in Chile, Aero Santa Cruz Fumigaciones Aéreas, owned and operated by Víctor Gonzáles, at 7 a.m. on Easter Sunday 2020, made the country’s first aerial application for the treatment of coronavirus. In a WhatsApp interview with Víctor, AgAir Update was told the details of the application. Aero Santa Cruz has been featured on two occasions in AgAir Update in the past 23 years. With all permissions in place from local authorities, Aero Santa Cruz’s AT-402B was loaded with 1,500 liters of water (396 gal) that included 10 liters (2.64 gal) of BioClean in the mix. No adjuvants were used. The application rate was set at 30 l/ha (3 gal/ac) using a 40-meter (131-foot) swath. The ambient temperature was 12°C (54°F) and 76% humidity. Twelve applications were completed by 10:30 a.m. A total of 600 hectares (1,482 acres) were treated. Víctor said Aero Santa Cruz did not receive any complaints. Actually, Santa Cruz citizens were standing in the streets waving white clothes as a symbol of “Thank You”. Many people called Víctor to congratulate and thank him. He became the town hero. Other Chilean cities have been calling inquiring about a similar application.

April 2020 April 2020 highlighted Lane Aviation, a long-standing and well known business in the ag aviation world. Lane Aviation is celebrating its 75th year anniversary in 2020. Started by George Lane at the conclusion of the second World War, the company is now owned and operated by his son, Grant. AgAir Update had the opportunity to visit with Mark McDonald and Clint Hubbard, two of the new owners of Thrush Aircraft, LLC in Albany, Georgia in May of 2020. After Thrush Aircraft, Inc. went into Chapter 11, a new company emerged as Thrush Aircraft, LLC with new owners, new leadership and a renewed vision for its product line in both the agricultural aviation and the firefighting industry. The company is no stranger to reorganization. Originally Ayres Corporation, founded in the 1970s by Fred Ayres, a spin-off from Rockwell International, Ayres Corporation was responsible for the S2R type aircraft, which is the Type Certification for all modern-day Thrush aircraft. In 2003, Thrush Aircraft, Inc. was formed from Ayres Corporation and enjoyed a bountiful run introducing new product/engine combinations until several decisions led the company to being forced to seek new ownership. ➤ agairupdate.com | A 13

August 2020 The Eastern Plains of Colorado, divided by the South Platte River and Arkansas River valleys and backdropped by the Rocky Mountains, is one of the more scenic places in the United States. At an average elevation of almost a mile, the density altitude climbs rapidly in the summer. The “high” and “hot” adage, however, is routine for Air Dusters, Inc., a thirdgeneration operation in the small town of Roggen, about 40 miles northeast of Denver. The August 2020 edition featured the Schellenberg family. Air Dusters, Inc was started by Dan Schellenberg’s dad, Carl. Today, Dan and Jason Schellenberg operate high and hot on a regular basis.

July 2020 What does a Brazilian ag operator do, who has more than forty-five years of ag-flying experience, when he looks out his office window and sees an impressive line-up of 13 Ipanemas? His experience in business tells him the Ipanemas have served him well. However, maybe he asks, “Is there another ag-aircraft option that may work well with the Ipanema fleet?” Aviação Agricola Alagoana, Ltda was founded in 1976. In 1979, it was bought out by husband and wife team, Gregory and Deta Smith. Based in Rio Largo, Alagoas, a northeastern state in Brazil near the coast (Maceio), Alagoana decided in 2019 that it was time to expand its horizons with the purchase of a new AT-402B from AeroGlobo Aeronaves based in Botucatu, SP, a Lane Aviation Air Tractor representative.

October 2020 The October 2020 edition saw the debut of new AgAir Update writer Grant Boyd. Grant interviewed Ken Bixenman of Great Plains Spraying in Colby, Kansas. Great Plains Spraying was started in 1976 by Ken Bixenman, who grew up about a half-hour from Colby in the Grinnell/Grainfield area. Being a third-generation farmer, agriculture runs deep in his family’s lineage and farming is something he continues to do when not spraying other farmer’s fields. He and his brothers, Ron and Daryl, currently share equipment while tending to their own shared wheat and corn fields, as well as several small feedlots. Great Plains Spraying is the only Colby-based agricultural aviation outfit and operates three 510 Thrush solely from Colby Municipal Airport (CBK). The three aircraft primarily spray in Thomas County, but also service the surrounding counties of Sherman, Cheyenne, Rawlins, Decatur, Sheridan, Gove, Logan and Wallace. Annually, they spray an average of about 120,000 acres, which consists of corn (40%), wheat (30%), pastureland and lots (15%), with the remainder coming from beans, milo
November 2020 Sometimes things are just meant to be. Such is the case with Mike Rivenbark, owner and pilot of Moore’s Aerial Applicators in Clinton, North Carolina. Mike wasn’t always an ag-pilot. In fact, he wasn’t born into ag aviation, or aviation in general. Raised in the Southern Outer Banks of North Carolina, Mike’s destiny was always going to be, seemingly, large spans of open ocean and fishing boats. Holding a 100-ton Master’s Captain License, Mike spent his days on 60-plus foot sport fishing boats along the Eastern seaboard and into the Caribbean. After being convinced by a fellow shipmate that happened to be the son of North Carolina operator Henry Moore, Jr., Mike decided maybe flying ag would be a good career move. Mike went on to become an ag-pilot and eventually purchased Moore’s Aerial Applicators in 2017. He kept the company’s AT-402B, which he still operates. Mike was also able to purchase the Weathery that
began his ag-flying career and utilizes that aircraft as a back-up to the Air Tractor. His season begins in February and comes to a close during the middle of October with a final insecticide treatment on blueberries. The mission for ag-aviation is no fatalities. There was only one year in recent history that this was accomplished in the U.S. This year was not good in that respect. With a total of ten ag-aviation fatalities and no less than three SEAT fatalities, it leaves a large hole in the ag-aviation community.

While ferrying the Ag-Cat to a field, Reid reported to his wife that while in flight excessive foam coated the airplane’s windshield and he was unable to see outside of the airplane.
July 10— Paul Gould On the same day as the Reid accident, July 10, Paul Gould of Webber Falls, Oklahoma was killed during departure in a Cessna T188 near Dustin, Oklahoma. Gould was taking off with a 165-gallon load of herbicide. According to another company pilot, the aircraft did not get airborne when it should have. The Cessna collided with several utility poles before coming to a stop. Gould was 62 years old and is survived by his wife, parents and other relatives.

One second of inattention, or one miscalculation is all it takes for tragedy to strike. July 17— Terry Harchenko Terry Harchenko’s Hiller UH-12D helicopter was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Mehama, Oregon on July 17. This was the sixth fatal accident in the U.S. for 2020. Harchenko had been treating Christmas trees when the accident occurred. He was 65 years old.
July 25— Alex Tuttle In Grant, Nebraska on July 25, the AT-502B that Alex Tuttle was flying impacted terrain burying the prop and engine three feet into the ground. Per the NTSB, another pilot stated Tuttle’s aircraft “...consistently climbed 450-500 ft AGL during its course reversal turns following each spray pass.” The pilot stated that the last time he saw the accident airplane it was flying westbound in a climb before it rolled right into a 90°-100° bank turn with a nose-high pitch angle of 10°-12° above the horizon. The pilot stated that the accident airplane was turning toward the north as the nose of the airplane pitched down through the horizon, consistent with a Lazy Eight flight maneuver. Satloc GPS data confirmed altitudes given by the witness, along with ground speeds in spray runs of 155 to 165 MPH with turns ranging from 104 to 120 MPH. Tuttle was 31 years old and is survived by his parents and brother. ➤

July 27— Keith Dodson
July 30— David Blake Haynes and Scott Thomas
While other fatalities in 2020 were for experienced ag-pilots, Keith Dodson’s fatal accident on July 27 was on his third load of water for practicing spray runs in a Cessna C-188. According to witnesses in the NTSB report, Dodson had made a couple of spray runs and while in “a turn the airplane suddenly nosed over and impacted the ground”. Dodson was a first year agpilot. He was 50 years old. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, two grandchildren, parents, a sister and other relatives.
Although the following accident reports are not for Part 137 operations, pilots of these SEAT aircraft flew basically the same aircraft ag-pilots fly, the AT-802A. Pilots David Blake Haynes and Scott Thomas were killed when the two AT-802As they were flying collided in mid-air while working the Bishop Fire near Elgin, Nevada on July 30. The flight of two departed Mesquite, Nevada with their loads of fire retardant. According to ADS-B data and the NTSB report, at 7,100 feet MSL the aircraft started their descent into their intended drop area with the second AT-802 about 1,500 feet behind the lead AT-802. They descend through 6,000 ft MSL with the second AT-802 still about 1,500 ft in trail. When the two AT-802s leveled out, the second AT-802 was about 500 ft in trail and 100 ft below the lead AT-802. In a descent below 400 feet AGL, ADS-B data ceased temporarily. When regained, both aircraft were in a climb with one AT-802 about 70 feet in trail and 125 feet below the lead AT-802. According to video provided by a ground witness, both aircraft deployed their retardant loads and climbed. In a rapid climb, the trailing AT-802 reported retardant on his windshield and was initiating a go-around. The trailing AT-802 then made a turn and collided into the lead AT-802.
August 21— Wes Addison After July’s five fatal accidents, nearly a month passes before disaster strikes in Del, Arkansas on August 21. Wes Addison was a 28-year vetern ag-pilot, having flown for the same operator since 2004. Wes began his ag-pilot career working for his dad at Addison Flying Service. He was 55 years old at the time of his accident. Witnesses reported that the AT-802 Addison was flying was in a steep turn before losing altitude. The aircraft was found in a nose down attitude with the engine buried in the ground.
September 23— Randy Berry Another month passes before the 10th fatal accident of 2020 occurs on September 23 near Floral City, Florida. Randy Berry was spraying in a Pawnee PA-25. A witness to the accident saw the aircraft appear to pitch up to clear an obstacle “...then abruptly went down.” Berry was a high-time agpilot and ag-pilot instructor with over 31,000 hours and more than 50 years of flying experience.
A 20 | agairupdate.com
September 22— Ricky Fulton Ricky Fulton was fatally injured September 22 while fighting a fire in southwestern Idaho in an AT-802A. He was 58 years old. Although an experienced ag and bush pilot, this was his first season as a SEAT pilot. He is survived by his mother, two brothers and other relatives.
Author’s Note: At this writing just before Thanksgiving, the ag-aviation industry has lost 10 of its ag-pilots while doing their jobs flying ag. Additionally, three more pilots were killed while aerial firefighting. It is striking that half the ag-flying fatalities happened in July. It’s a tragic loss for the industry. In reading this article, there are a couple of points to take note. The majority of the accidents appear to be stall related. There does not seem to be a trend related to age or hours logged. The reality is, agflying and aerial firefighting is precision flying in an unforgiving environment. One second of inattention, or one miscalculation is all it takes for tragedy to strike.

The interests of the Brazilian ag-aviation industry is represented by its national association Sindicato Nacional das Empresas de Aviação Agrícola (SINDAG). Since 1991, the association has grown to be a powerful advocate for the industry. It has been fortunate to have had several very good leaders over the years serving as its president. In June of 2019, the members elected SINDAG director Thiago Magalhães Silva to serve as its president for the next two years. Thiago comes from a family of ag-aviators. His father, Antonio Carlos da Silva (Carlito) and his wife, Áurea Lúcia Magalhães Silva, formed Tangará Aero Agrícola, Ltda. in April 1985 in Orlândia, SP. The company initially operated one AgWagon and one Ipanema, but soon after, in the 1990s, it bought three PA-25 Piper Pawnees imported from Argentina. In April 1999, his children got into the business and formed Aeroagrícola Chapadão, by Thiago and his sister, Bruna Magalhães. This company originally operated in Catalão City, Goias. But after three years, Thiago and Bruna moved the company to Orlândia to help Tangará Aeroagrícola. Today, Tangará provides sales and services to ag-operators in the region and is an authorized service center for AeroGlobo Aeronaves, which represents all Air Tractor models for the U.S. Air Tractor dealer Lane Aviation. While Tangará Aeroagrícola is the sales and aircraft maintenance company, Aeroagrícola Chapadão is the spraying company. It has a fleet of ag-aircraft that consists of 12 Air Tractors, four Piper Pawnee PA-25s and two Piper PA-36 Braves. The 12 Air Tractor models are six AT-402s, five A 24 | agairupdate.com
AT-502s and one AT-802, which is used primarily for firefighting outfitted with a Zanoni hydraulic dump gate. Originally, Thiago planned to attend business school in São Paulo and pursue a career out of aviation. But in 1999, the sugar cane industry was going through a crisis that reflected on ag aviation. So he quit the college in São Paulo and returned to Ribeirão Preto, where he graduated in law and business administration while helping his father with the company. At that time, the company only operated three Pipe PA-25 Pawnees. After working for 15 years in the ag-aviation business, in 2015 Thiago was invited to be a SINDAG director. Four years later in 2019, he was elected to serve as the association’s president. He is now in his first term as the SINDAG president. SINDAG’s presidential terms are two years, but a current president could be reelected for a second term. He devotes no less than two-three hours a day on SINDAG business. Plus, until early 2020, he often traveled representing the association, meeting with government officials, ANAC and other ag aviation interests. The safety restrictions imposed by the new coronavirus reduced the trips, and even affected SINDAG’s planned events. About this, Thiago explains, that the advent of COVID-19 created uncertainties for the association, especially concerning the in-person Brazilian ag aviation convention that was scheduled for July in Sertãozinho, state of São Paulo. “The convention ended up canceled for 2020 and we moved the program to the same place in 2021. However, social media was already in the association’s ➤

plans for training and virtual meetings. The pandemic only hastened this process, therefore we had the online convention in July, so the year wouldn’t get skipped.” The virtual media program originally was directed to operators. “However, as it progressed, it was offered to ag-pilots and other ag aviation professionals, as well. Like the Flight Security Academy - which had more than 230 participants, the Brazilian Aerial Application Technology Academy and other initiatives.” Programs are presented through Zoom and reproduced on SINDAG´s YouTube channel. Everything is tailored to meet the needs that were identified through virtual meetings and other events involving operators, pilots, loaders and other professionals. “Ensino A Distância (EAD) is considered to be a huge success and it continues even today.” When asked if social media and virtual speeches would negatively affect future in-person congresses Thiago says a
definitive no. “I actually believe EAD will help our attendance at future congresses. 90% of the ag-pilots surveyed wanted to continue with the convention. With virtual training, this will allow the congress to be more efficient. There are plans for major speeches at the introduction and the closing of the convention to be made through the web, increasing the opportunities for speeches from renowned authorities in the field from abroad, or without enough spare time to travel, allowing for more constructive time during the convention.” Although Thiago does not fly ag, he does have a Private Pilot’s license and devotes his administrative skills to growing the companies owned by the Magalhães. Aside from having the huge responsibility of multi-tasking the management of these companies, he finds time to serve SINDAG. It seems every president has challenges during their terms; Thiago has met his COVID-19 challenge head on and SINDAG is the better for it.
In 2001, Tangará Aeroagrícola imported an ethanol powered Pawnee to add it to its fleet of ag-aircraft. It was the first ethanol powered ag-aircraft to operate in Brazil. National Agricultural Aviation Association
The Essential Nature of Aerial Application and NAAA By Andrew Moore, CEO, National Agricultural Aviation Association
Aerial application has been, is and will continue to be essential.
This industry being deemed essential by the federal government is not a unique occurrence.
B 2 | agairupdate.com
The latest historically significant example of this stems from March 19, 2020, when the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s “Guidance on the Essential Critical Infrastructure Workforce” identified those providing agricultural inputs as an economic sector with essential workers critical to public health and safety, as well as to economic and national security. The guidance went on to state that permitting these functions to continue during periods of community restriction, access management, social distancing or closure orders is crucial to the continuity of essential functions— like the food supply. Aerial applicators and crew didn’t skip a beat and continued to treat nearly a third of the nation’s cropland during the 2020 U.S. COVID-19 outbreak. This industry being deemed essential by the federal government is not a unique occurrence. Perhaps most memorably, think back to 2001 and the tragedy of 9/11. The U.S. government shut down the airspace throughout the country after hijackers crashed airliners into the World Trade Center Twin Towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and an open field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Aerial application was the first sector of general aviation back in the air on Sept. 14, 2001, due to the essential service ag aviators were providing to defoliate cotton, protect potatoes from fungi, and combat wildfires and disease-carrying mosquitoes that late
summer. Two more times the airspace was shut down to aerial applicators shortly thereafter due to intelligence uncovered showing the terrorists possessed information on ag aviation, but the essential service they provide, coupled with determining there was no security risk, resulted in those additional ground stops being lifted within 48 hours or less.
The National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA) was the conductor that orchestrated the government into action in these and a plethora of other cases. All of this didn’t occur in a vacuum. The National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA) was the conductor that orchestrated the government into action in these and a plethora of other cases. Almost immediately after state quarantines began being issued nationally this past March, NAAA was in direct communication with officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), ➤

In Times of Crisis, You Need NAAA in Your Corner. When a crisis strikes, the National Agricultural Aviation Association rises to meet it head-on. When other industries were shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, NAAA made sure the aerial application industry was deemed an “essential” business, clearing the way for you to conduct your needed and necessary services without delay. Not only did NAAA make sure that crop input services like the ones aerial applicators provide were listed as essential, your national association successfully petitioned to extend expiration dates for flight medical, commercial pesticide applicator, and numerous other needed licenses to conduct aerial application services so the industry could keep running when government agency offices were shuttered. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Vice President Pence’s Coronavirus Task Force and the White House, effectively explaining that the aerial application industry was an essential service in light of the COVID-19 outbreak and needed to continue to provide that essential service. After succeeding, NAAA worked with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the FAA, the EPA and state pesticide certification agencies to successfully extend expiration dates for the many licenses required by our industry members due to government and nonemergency medical offices being shut down and unable to issue licenses. In 2001, NAAA was in direct conversation with the White House, congressional leaders, and an alphabet soup of other federal offices including the FAA, DOJ, DOD, DOT, USDA, FBI and CIA to ensure the skies remained open for aerial applicators. And it worked due to our essential nature. In a post-viral pandemic world will we remain essential? Certainly, if a safe, affordable and plentiful food supply, clothing, disease prevention and fire protection remain vital for human survival. Global demographics and diversifying as an industry will likely result in aerial application becoming even more vital. The planet’s population is projected to grow from its current 7.8 billion souls to possibly 11 billion by the next century. That is a lot more clothing and food needed. Couple that with a return to the pre-pandemic pace of international travel and the threat of health-compromising
microbes will likely increase as the planet’s petri dish of human carriers increases and returns to its international migration for business and leisure purposes. And it is not just human diseases that will increase international travel in the future—crop and forest pests will do the same. Exotic pests typically require quick and effective applications of crop protection products to control their destructive spread. Quick and effective means aerial application. Aerial application is essential for food, fiber, biofuel production and fire protection. In a post-coronavirus epidemic, our essentialness may even grow by providing more public-health protection services. NAAA will be leading the way communicating the invaluable nature of the industry to public officials, the media and the public at large. If you aren’t an NAAA member yet, please join in preserving, protecting and promoting the essential nature of aerial application by joining your national association. The payoff far exceeds what you will spend in dues in the form of effective advocacy, national representation, education and safety programs. Load Pad Leadership by Michael Rutledge PART 2
“Nobody will make a great leader who wants to do it all himself or get all the credit for doing it” Andrew Carnegie-
If your employees feel accomplished at their respective jobs they achieve personal satisfaction, it’s a win all around.
B 6 | agairupdate.com
“Why do I need to try to be a better leader?” It’s a valid question particularly if whatever technique you’ve used so far has resulted in a successful career. There are actually several legitimate, practical answers to the question, but we’ll highlight the ones which have the most immediate benefits. In simple terms we want to be more productive while minimizing supervision which, in turn, ultimately means more profitability. The inevitable, positive ripple effects include improved team cohesion and higher individual skill levels. If your employees feel accomplished at their respective jobs, they achieve personal satisfaction. It’s a win all around. If we were to describe our end goal it would be to become Servant Leaders; employers and business owners who grow and promote the well-being of those who work for us, rather than viewing them as just a necessary component to our success. For any of this to gain traction you may have to arrange your motivation and priorities in a different order. We have to buy into the concept that our success is directly proportionate to the effort put forth empowering team members to become more capable and successful in their own right. The road to becoming a better leader is understanding the techniques and qualities which make us more effective in getting our team’s best performance. As we discussed in Part 1, developing sound leadership tools is a learning process. If you’ve had the privilege of working with or for someone who’s a gifted leader, I guarantee they weren’t born a Jedi. It took several years and failed attempts to hone the technique. Along the way they learned either formally or by trial and error which characteristics make effective leaders. The following qualities aren’t all inclusive, but they’re most commonly found in those who run efficient and tight-knit organizations. Setting the Standard: Being in charge is tough, if it were easy everyone would be successful. The
most significant challenge is leading from the front and being credible. To do this we have to set the example in everything from technical expertise, work ethic, as well as being a moral compass; and it’s a sizable responsibility. This point spills over into mentorship, but in many ways leading goes hand in hand with mentoring. We can’t ask anyone to do something we’re not willing to do ourselves. If your team knows that, you’ll earn their respect. You don’t have to be an expert at everything but acknowledge the talents others bring to the table and some humility goes a long way in developing relationships. It also doesn’t mean you always have to sweep the hangar, drag a load hose, or get dirty under an airplane to make your point; they just need to know you’re capable and willing to do so if needed.
The road to becoming a better leader is understanding the techniques and qualities which make us more effective in getting our team’s best performance. Integrity and Trust: This is possibly the most impactful trait which determines the cohesiveness of your team. We may not realize it, but our reactions to various situations are always being observed; good or bad. Your people have to be able to trust what you tell them. Failure to follow through on a commitment or something you said you’d do and it’ll have lasting negative effects. Our employees also pay close attention to how we conduct business. The ethics they see us use will likely be adopted to form their own operating standards. In short, if you lie or they don’t believe what you say, even to someone else, you’ll never ever earn their trust and in turn their full ➤

loyalty. They’ll do what you ask them but they’re doing it for a paycheck, not because they’re inspired to follow you. If this occurs, it’ll be challenging to achieve the benefits of leadership. You’ll never get beyond managing. In the military it’s not uncommon to salute or render honors to an officer you don’t care for, but we do it out of respect for the position, not the person. The point is, your folks can go through the motions without really meaning it and you get obedience but not necessarily loyalty. Communication: This topic could be a multi-faceted article itself. Clear, concise and timely communication is the key to your team understanding what you want done and how. Mind reading or making assumptions is not a viable technique for your people to help run an efficient business. Nobody likes wondering what’s coming next so at a minimum we need to provide what’s referred to as a Leader’s Intent; what you want done, why, to what standard and the deadline. This provides your folks all the information they need to budget their time and make decisions without you hovering over them; if you’ve provided a clear end-state, let them determine the “how”. If you micromanage your team it undermines confidence in their own abilities and negates the positive aspects of leadership. Effective leadership also means you have to be receptive to respectful feedback. No matter how long you’ve been in the business our team sees things we miss. Provide the constructive opportunity to hear them out. This can be something as simple as an end of the season question of, “What would you change to make us run smoother?” It gives them ownership and you may be surprised at the innovative ideas that come out of a teenage loader’s mouth. It sounds excessive but everybody performs better when they know the rules ahead of time. This is particularly true for younger team members who may be learning their craft. Communicating effectively takes preparation and planning, which is why it usually gets skipped. But when done correctly, it can go a long way toward making your operation a well-oiled machine. Knowing Your Team: Inspiring people is also referred to as “leadership with compassion”, knowing what makes them tick. Understanding what affects them negatively is just as important as what motivates them. If one of your employees
is performing uncharacteristically, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re just substandard, most of the time there’s something brewing beneath the obvious. Care enough to ask and find out what’s going on. Very few people are content with failure. Everyone one of us has a story and a compassionate leader takes the time to listen. Getting your people back on track directly benefits the entire organization. Knowing somebody cares about your problems is an amazing motivator. I was once told “if you’ve got people, you’ve got people problems”. Your team won’t care until they know you care. Dealing with the full spectrum of what life throws at our folks is a necessary part of being in charge. Projects Credit: An effective leader gives credit to the team when there’s a success and accepts responsibility for failure. This is a tough one because it means we have to acknowledge our shortcomings and that can be a tough pill to swallow. Napoleon once said, “There is no such thing as a bad army, just bad generals.” If your operation isn’t going the way you envisioned, there’s a good chance it’s because your team doesn’t have a clear understanding of what’s expected or hasn’t been trained to perform to your standards. Blaming others is the fastest way to erode loyalty and trust in your organization. If you take nothing else from this article, believe me when I say that once you take responsibility for your team’s failures and they know you have their back, your relationship and their performance will never be stronger. Effective leadership is multi-faceted and we never fully master it, but everybody benefits while we figure it out. We’ve focused on leadership skills for operators and supervisors, next issue we’ll talk about what makes a good team member. I hope to see you all in Savannah and helping you build stronger teams for next season! Author: Michael Rutledge is a current ag pilot and operator in Indiana having served 30 years on active duty in several leadership roles as a Navy SEAL and Army special operations aviator culminating with commanding and teaching Leadership and Character Development at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

The seven-cylinder LeRhone rotary engine screams with a bloodcurdling sound. In my record library I have a vintage LP that records the sounds of World War I aircraft. Listening to the famous Camel pursuit ship warming up that LeRhone raises the hackles on the neck and makes the blood run cold! The LeRhone’s inventor had the cylinders revolve around the crankshaft, rather than vice versa. The propeller was bolted and welded to the cylinder base. All seven cylinders and the prop B 10 | agairupdate.com
revolved together, emitting a devilish sound not unlike that of a dying banshee! To make matters worse, the engine had no conventional carburetor and no throttle at all. It ran wide open. The power was reduced by grounding out individual cylinders by pressing buttons in the cockpit. The fellows who flew these aircraft were certain that the plane itself killed more pilots than the Kaiser’s aces! I was a personal friend of a World War I ace, Colonel Howard Stovall of Stovall, Mississippi, a man credited with shooting down ➤

seven German Fokkers and Phalz’s in 1918. The Colonel loved to talk about the Camel. “The torque on that bird with a LeRhone rotary was unbelievable,” he used to say. “If you pulled up steep and banked in the direction of the torque, the Camel would go over the top instantly and you would find yourself in a very hairy situation! Sometimes you could pull it out in time, but a lot of good men didn’t.” In spite of its drawbacks, the LeRhone was one of the best engines of its day. Although Frenchbuilt, hundreds found their way into the United States surplus market in the early 1920s. Oddly enough, this contributed significantly to the development of agricultural flying, particularly in Texas. Around 1924 or 1925, a Captain Tipps, barnstormer and World War I pilot, went into partnership with a skilled machinist named Smith in Houston, Texas. A shop was set up in collaboration with the H.G. Wilcox Aircraft Company, which specialized in the sale of surplus aircraft, particularly the Standard Js that were plentiful. Tipps and Smith were joined by another intrepid airman, Curtis Quick, and they began converting these surplus LeRhones into stationary engines with conventional carburetors and throttles, with the crankshaft doing the rotating instead of the cylinders. They were successful
to a degree, and these engines were installed in quantity in the Standards, many of which found their way into the hands of early crop dusters. According to J.O. Dockery in an interview, Tipps, Smith, and Quick also installed dust hoppers in these Standards and began dusting cotton in the Brazos Valley, particularly around Sugar Land, Richmond, Bryan, and Navasoto as early as 1925. Some of their early pilots included Eddie Bond, Gardner Nagle, Lewis “Bozo” Moore, and for a while in 1926, J.O. Dockery himself. “You wouldn’t believe it,” recalls Dockery. “They had made that engine into what seemed to be an ordinary radial, but it sure had some drawbacks! To start it cold, you had to squirt a cupful of castor oil directly into the case and when you finally got it started, it hated to keep running. “I worked for Tipps and Smith 28 days and, during that time, I had 14 engine failures. Not all of them were inflight failures, but most of them were. The good open country we were working was the only thing that saved me and I never did bust up an airplane, at least not much! After engine number 14 went out, I decided that the future was sort of dim, if I had to depend on the Super LeRhone, so I handed in my quitting papers and went back to Arkansas and Mississippi.” Curtis Quick, however, was not discouraged and it appears that in some manner he procured ➤

all conversion rights to this engine and continued to produce and install it in Standards, calling them “Super LeRhones” or sometimes “Quick Radials.” He then organized his own crop dusting firm at Houston known as Quick Crop Dusters, or sometimes as the Super LeRhone Flying Corporation. A fairly widespread business developed and the firm became well-known in the Brazos Valley and later in the Rio Grande Valley further south. Curtis Quick, who was later nicknamed “Pappy,” helped popularize airplane dusting in Texas in the 1920s. Later in the 1930s, Quick moved to Arizona and set up a dusting service in Phoenix. He and Tom Allen Scott formed perhaps the first bona fide dusting services in Arizona. During the early Texas years, marginal equipment and inferior insecticides created problems. In a 1955 interview, Holland Porter, a large planter from Bryan, talked of those days. “About 1926,” he recalled, “my father and some of his neighbors contracted with an airplane company to come in and poison the army worms that were eating up the cotton. We had burned every mule and horse on the farm and broken all the chains on the old poison machines. The leaf worms were eating us up and we were trying to use calcium arsenate and Paris green, mixing them together by rolling them around in a barrel. We couldn’t get it on the crops fast enough.
Houses Pose Problems “When the airplanes came, we thought we had it licked, but we were wrong! We were not quite ready for airplane dusting. We had some alfalfa patches for landing fields, but there were tenant houses all over the fields, plus fences, telephone lines, and a lot of big pecan trees that made the job very hard and dangerous, especially when pilots tried to work around those houses. The pilots in those days were pretty wild, in the air and on the ground, but they could do some amazing things with those planes and considering how bad the terrain was and how sorry the poison was, I guess they did pretty well. When they were not flying, they were either working on the planes or in town doing a little drinking. “However, as the years went by, the pilots and planes improved a lot, but the poison didn’t get much better. We kept on using calcium arsenate and Paris green. We killed a few cows and horses and maybe a few bugs and we just struggled along until about 1934 with nothing any better. We could control the leaf worms, hold down the boll weevil a little, but when the boll worms showed up, we usually just quit and gave them what was left. “Then a new poison came out called flourine that was supposed to control boll worms and our dusting program increased tremendously. Flourine was not supposed to harm cattle or man and we used a lot of it. Frankly, I don’t think it did the ➤

worms any harm either, but it was expensive and hard to get, so naturally we used it! “We had also discovered sulphur dusting by then. This started when Dr. J.C. Gaines, with the Agriculture Department, found out that the cotton leafhoppers were doing us about as much damage as the weevils and the worms. Straight sulphur would control them fairly well and some of the pilots began putting it out, even though it was apt to blow up the airplane
on a real hot day! We never did have this happen on our place, but it did begin to happen in nearby areas. “We rocked along with these materials for quite a long time and finally wound up working with Gaines and Dr. B.R. Coad of Delta Air Service and doing a pretty fair job in spite of second-class poisons. Anyway, we had come a long way from the mule and sack stage that we were in before 1926.” The Rio Grande Valley and the Coastal Bend of Texas provided ample opportunity for the expansion of early Texas crop dusting. The land itself is lovely to look at, neatly laid out, much of it in nice, checkerboard fashion which presents a garden-like appearance. The towns scattered through the area are picturesque, many with Spanish-sounding names that clearly enunciate their cultural ties to Mexico, just across the river. Towns like San Benito, McAllen, Harlingen, Mercedes, Edinburg, Pharr, Rio Hondo, and Mission are aviation-oriented and those early pilots loved that country just as pilots do today. The people were friendly, the food great, beer and booze flowed across the border from Mexico, and the laidback culture and dark-haired girls were attractions that pilots couldn’t resist! People down there eat huevos diablo (eggs scrambled with hot chile peppers) for breakfast and duster pilots claim that it makes for good digestion! Maybe so, maybe not, but it was agricultural flying country from the beginning and remains so today.

Reabe Aircraft Improvement Launches New 7½” Reabe Smart Gate Reabe Aircraft Improvement (Reabe AI) announced its launch of the new 7½” Reabe Smart Gate. The design and software of the 7½” Reabe Smart gate is nearly identical to the newly STC certified 5” Reabe Smart Gate. It retains all of the features that our customers appreciate from the 5” model; however, slight mechanical modifications were made to increase the force for a 7½” gate box. The 7½” Reabe Smart Gate retains the same durability and light weight, at 35 pounds, obtains a 5.5-inch gate opening and runs constant and variable rate application. The system interfaces with all major GPS units. The simplicity of the electric system, four components and wiring, limits maintenance and installation time. The new model has been successfully flight tested during the 2020 season with accuracy and dependability. This is great news as Reabe AI can now serve operators that require heavy applications with a 7½” gate box. The 7½” Reabe Smart Gate design is the logical extension of the FAA STC certified 5” Reabe Smart Gate, which possesses notable reliability and safety standards. Safety is paramount to Reabe AI, which makes mechanical redundancy a key feature of the Reabe Smart Gate. The system allows the lever and all mechanical linkages to remain entirely intact as a secondary system. The gate may be manually operated by the pilot at any time during flight. The primary purpose of the mechanical redundancy is that it provides an added emergency feature and ensures that the aircraft can always work on dry application B 18 | agairupdate.com
even if a system error occurs. It also provides the benefit of being able to close the gate manually, in flight, after an emergency dump. Pilot and mechanic feedback has been vital in the development of the Reabe Smart Gate, leading to unprecedented features. Reabe AI is always working for its customers by making improvements as they continuously strive to make their products the most customer friendly, intuitive and dependably safe. Reabe AI takes pride in providing exceptional customer service to ensure customer satisfaction. Visit ReabeAir.com to access manuals, install instructions and view Reabe Gate support videos that detail all features from basic to complex, including variable rate. Reabe AI’s vision of developing solutions that move the ag aviation industry forward in efficiency and safety comes from three generations of ag aviation experience starting with Reabe Flying Service (incorporated in 1945) to Reabe Spraying Service (founded in 1979). Reabe Aircraft Improvement (founded in 1991) identifies problems encountered by our family’s skilled and experienced pilots and mechanics and works diligently to develop solutions. Reabe Aircraft Improvement is proud to launch the newest solution to the ag aviation industry, the 7 ½” Reabe Smart Gate. Visit ReabeAir. com or contact Jeff Reabe for more information. Advice for New Operators
One of the most amazing things about our industry is the willingness to help each other.
B 20 | agairupdate.com
I often get calls from pilots that are ready to be independent and start their own operation. Most likely they’ve been working for someone else awhile and are ready to get out on their own. Although I’m not an ag pilot, I know this feeling. When I first started working, I worked for other people. However, I’m an independent-minded person and wanted to have my own business. I’ve been on my own for around 35 years now and I don’t regret it one bit. But, being in business for yourself is not for everyone. There are a lot of challenges no matter what business you are in. I thought it would be a good idea to ask some operators their thoughts that have experience in ag aviation. I wanted to come up with a few suggestions that might possibly help those who are just getting started. 1. Get a job with an operator and learn as much as you can before you go on your own. Going into it blindly is very difficult. There’s a big learning curve. 2. Getting the pesticide license can be challenging, depending on the state where you test. There’s a lot of training and testing. It can be multiple years to get a commercial pilot’s license. 3. Start with an inexpensive aircraft. Plan and expect for any possible worst case scenario and be happy if things are any better than that. 4. Do as much as you can yourself. Keep overhead low until you can afford otherwise. 5. If you think you have enough money, you probably don’t....
6. Make sure you can be insured. Procuring insurance can be challenging. A choice of underwriters is limited. You’ll probably pay a higher premium the first year; Maybe as much as 10% -20% of the airplane’s value. 7. Your biggest ongoing expenses will be fuel, insurance, cost of plane and maintenance. 8. If looking to buy a used engine, pay more now, or spend more later on maintenance. 9. Become a member of the national and state associations. Take advantage of the benefits they have for people just coming into the business. 10. A rule of thumb that has no reason to be valid is whatever you paid for your plane is what you need to gross every year at a minimum. 11. You’ll have good years and you’ll have bad ones. Keep a good frame of mind. Think positively. One of the most amazing things about our industry is the willingness to help each other. Although there are exceptions, it’s kind of like one big family. I’m going to pass this information on to the young man that called last week. Hopefully this information will help others getting into the business, as well. Be safe y’all!

The Eternal Story of Jesus Christ
The birth, life, death, resurrection and the ascending into heaven of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is the most wonderful story ever written.
B 22 | agairupdate.com
Jesus said, “You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me” (John 5:39). The entire Bible is about the coming of Jesus Christ to die for the sins of all humanity that will trust in Him as their Lord and Savior. Jesus Christ will destroy Satan’s work (Genesis 3:15). All the nations of the earth will be blessed by Abram’s descendants (Genesis 12:3, 28:14). Jesus Christ will come through the tribe of Judah (Genesis 49:10). Jesus Christ will come through the linage of King David (2 Samuel 7:12-13). “A virgin will give birth, and He will be called Immanuel (God with us)” (Isaiah 7:14). “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end” (Isaiah 9:6-7a). “He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His strips we are healed….He poured out His soul unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors, and He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors” (Isaiah 53:5, 12b). God sent an angel to tell Daniel the exact date when Jesus Christ would ride the donkey into Jerusalem and reveal to the world that He was the Messiah, the Savior of the world (Daniel 9:25-26). The decree by Caesar Augustus forced Joseph and Mary to go from Nazareth to Bethlehem in order to be counted for a census (Luke 2:1-6). But Caesar Augustus didn’t understand that God was using him to fulfill the prophecy that Jesus Christ would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2). God said, “Surely, as I have thought, so it shall come to
pass, and as I have purposed, so it shall stand… For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me,declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure,’ (Isaiah 14:24, 46:9-10). The angels said, “For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11). John wrote, “Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). Jesus Christ gave up His will to do His Father’s will (John 5:30). Peter said, “Jesus Christ, was delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God” (Acts 2:23). God chose all Christians in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love (Ephesians 1:4). “And He Himself (Christ Jesus) is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world” (1 John 2:2). Every Christian’s name was written in God’s Book of Life before the foundation of the world (Revelation 13:5, 17:8). The birth, life, death, resurrection and the ascending into heaven of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is the most wonderful story ever written. We stand in awe and wonder of the Son of God who covered up His heavenly glory with human flesh. “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). The Son of God left the riches of heaven to live among poor earthly sinners and to die on a Cross for our sins (Philippians 2:6-8). “God made Jesus Christ, who had no sin, to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). Christmas is the celebration of the Son of God coming into this world to show us by His death
UNITED STATES
and resurrection that He has power over death, and can give us eternal life (1 Corinthians 15:54-58). Jesus said, “I lay down My life that I may take it again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again…I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die” (John 10:17-18, John 11:25-26). John wrote, “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life—the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us—that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ” (1 John 1-4). God has given us the gift of eternal life in heaven through faith in Jesus Christ, and many people will neglect it, toss it aside, and ignore it! Imagine, the Lord of glory, the God of heaven, the Savior of this world, coming to earth to redeem man, and there’s no room for Him in the Inn (Luke 2:7). The tragedy of no place for Jesus Christ in the lives of many people is being repeated over and over again today. We see the worldly systems moving Jesus Christ out of sight in their Christmas displays. There’s no room for Jesus Christ in most public schools. There’s no room for God’s laws and Jesus Christ in most human government. The story of there being no room for the Son of God is being repeated today when people make the eternal mistake of having no room in their heart for Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. This Christmas, don’t forget that the season is all about Jesus Christ! “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” (2 Corinthians 9:15). Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).

Goddard Lift Kit Breathes Life into Pawnee by Bill Lavender
The Goddard Lift Kit, developed by Tucson-based Airborne Research, enhances the flight characteristics of the Pawnee with its slotted leading edge and aileron gap seal additions to the wings.

TUCSON, AZ — What you are about to read, some will not believe. All I can do is assure you that it is true. I flew the two aircraft; a Piper Pawnee and a Piper Super Cub, allow me to tell you the story. Last year I was contacted by Airborne Research, owned and operated by Mike and Hal Goddard of Tucson, Arizona. I knew nothing of the company, but quickly learned Hal had developed a leading edge kit for the Pawnee and the Super Cub. The claims Airborne Research were making about the effects of the Goddard Lift Kit were nothing short of unbelievable. When Hal told me the Super Cub could make an approach to landing at 25 mph and stall at 15 mph, I had to restrain myself from calling him a “stretcher of the truth”. I needed to see and fly these aircraft and check out their abilities for myself. Thus, I made a trip to Arizona for a couple of evaluation flights. Hal Goddard formed Airborne Research in 1989
primarily for the development of several light aircraft add-on modifications he had designed. In 1995, Mike Goddard, Hal’s son, joined the company bringing his expertise in modifications, quality control, marketing and flight testing. Hal started his ag flying career during the 1960s flying with Tom Glover of Quality Aviation in Marana, Arizona. He also taught ag flying skills to pilots at the Ag Aviation Academy in Minden, Nevada. Hal’s colorful aviation career includes flying Helio Couriers across the North Atlantic, with travels in the Middle East, Far East, South America and Central America participating in the U.S. State Department’s drug eradication operations. One flying job earned Hal the first waiver to land zero-zero (prior to Category 1 & 2) with a Baron. This was no normal Baron. It was outfitted with a Transland spreader. The National Center of Atmospheric Research (NCAR) had contracted with Hal to fly in these conditions spreading a hygroscopic material along the approach-to-land and down the runway. The object of the research was to see if the material would dissipate the fog and create a “tunnel” for other aircraft to use for landing! Airborne Research is the offshoot of an idea to clean up the airflow around the lift struts of various aircraft. From that research, came the Goddard Lift Kit for the Pawnee and Super Cub, a slotted, leading edge that redistributes the boundary layer to follow the full chord of the wing. The trailing edge of the cuff and the position on the leading edge of the wing are critical to the Kit’s performance. The Kit also comes with a gap seal kit for the ailerons and flaps. The Kit is ➤

attached by straps with over center turnbuckles and takes less than a day to install. Mid-morning, the measured density altitude at Tucson’s Ryan Field (KRYN) was 5,000 feet. Hal was my check pilot, seating himself in the back seat of the Super Cub. We were to make a short flight north to Tom Glover’s Quality Aviation in Marana, Arizona where the Goddard Lift Kit outfitted Pawnee was based. Along the way, Hal would demonstrate the Super Cub, and of course, I’d try to duplicate. Hal explained Airborne Research had installed a helicopter airspeed indicator for a fairly accurate airspeed indication. Upon takeoff, Hal delegated me the aircraft controls and told me to “go after it”. He had forewarned me the takeoff and landing roll of the Super Cub was only 75 feet! Even at 5,000 feet DA and with two adults and full fuel, I didn’t miss that statement by much, it may have been closer to 100 feet! Climbing out at 35-40 mph was rather impressive. You just don’t expect this kind of performance from an otherwise standard 150 hp Super Cub. What was even more impressive was after leveling, the aircraft cruised at 120 mph, no loss in cruise performance from the leading edge kit. From about 1,500 feet AGL, I stalled the aircraft in a variety of configurations, no problems. No violent releases, just a gentle buffet and sinking; very docile. And, sure enough, the stalls with power and flaps were an indicated 15 mph. Making an approach at 25 mph with flaps and just a touch of power was a cinch. Well, you can only have so much fun in a
20-mile hop, within minutes we were at Quality Aviation where Hal introduced me to its owner, Tom Glover. Tom started flying ag in Marana with Harold Frost in 1960. Frost passed away and Tom bought the flying service. Quality Aviation operates four C-model 235 hp Pawnees of the late 1960s vintage and two Braves. Two of the Pawnees, at the time of my visit, were outfitted with Goddard Lift Kits. One of the Braves was being fitted with the kit for testing purposes. Tom explained that most of his flying was over cotton. His flying day starts at 4:30 am and stops by 9:00 am due to the heat. With the Pawnees outfitted with the Goddard Lift Kit, Tom said 125-gallon loads are never a problem. He never cuts back on the load because of density altitude increases. This is what Tom told me before I flew the Pawnee. I concur. The reality is, Tom can carry 150-gallon loads, he just didn’t think I’d believe him before I flew the aircraft. I avoid flying a strange ag aircraft loaded on the first flight. I followed this procedure with the Pawnee, taking it up empty and working it over a nearby cotton field. It flew fine. An empty Pawnee has always been a good flying ag-aircraft. Being cautious, and it was hot, I loaded 80 gallons and headed down the runway under full power. I was amazed at how quickly the Pawnee climbed out and how well it handled in the turns returning for another run over the cotton. Not much sense wasting a lot of time with this piece of a load, I returned for 125 gallons. A little water goes a long way in a Pawnee. If you’ve not had the pleasure of working a ➤

A collage of various angles of the installation of the Goddard Lift Kit on Tom Glover’s (Quality Aviation) Piper Pawnee.
Pawnee under high density altitude conditions, then you may not understand why a pilot gives a lot of thought to a 20-gallon change in a load. Even an extra ten gallons of fuel is cause for consideration. Knowing this from past experience (I learned to fly ag in a Pawnee, like many ag-pilots), I prepared for an extended takeoff run, asking Tom how he managed the crosscountry wires at the end. I should have known something was up, when he hesitated and didn’t really give me a good answer, something like, “You can get under them or just angle off to the southwest”. Interesting. After takeoff, I realized why I got such a vague answer. I could hardly tell any difference in the aircraft with 125 gallons onboard from when I had just returned with 80 gallons! It was truly unbelievable. Quality Aviation’s rag-wing Pawnee with its Goddard Lift Kit flew great, with 125 gallons, 20 or so gallons of fuel and a density altitude of 5,000 feet. I tried everything (normal) in the way of turns; race tracking, standard turns, wiping the ends, all with the load and surprising myself with each turn. Across the field, I couldn’t see any reduction in indicated airspeed for this Pawnee, about 110-115 mph using 2,400 rpm. Tom Reabe of Reabe Spraying Service in Waupun, Wisconsin has bought at least one Goddard Lift Kit. His letter is a B 28 | agairupdate.com
sidebar to this article. In his letter, Reabe sums up the performance of the Kit rather well. Again, I concur. Another bonus for the operator who installs the Goddard Lift Kit on his Pawnee(s) is the improvement to the aircraft’s swath. I could not see the effects to the swath from inside the cockpit, but Airborne Research has a video for potential customers that pretty much demonstrates how well the Kit improves the Pawnee swath. Airborne Research is claiming an increase to the swath width by five feet or about 10%. Also, it appears in the video the swath does not get entrapped in the aircraft’s wing vortices. Obviously, the Kit has an impact on the formation of the vortices. The Goddard Lift Kit has an FAA
337 Field Approval. However, since the kit has made such a significant improvement in performance and safety, an application for an STC has been filed at the request of the FAA and is currently in the certification process. If you are interested in buying a Goddard Lift Kit, I recommend you view the video and then arrange for a time to fly a Pawnee with the kit. Bring your checkbook. If you are serious about buying a kit, you won’t leave without signing on the dotted line for a Goddard Lift Kit. Visit Airborne Research’s website at www.airborneresearch.com and/or email them at airborneresearch@uswest. net. Their fax and phone number is 800-975-2015. Call’m and tell’m AgAir Update sent ya!
Goddard Lift Kit testimonial To whom it may concern: I have been operating Piper Pawnees since 1972. I recently installed the Goddard Lift Kit on a PA25-235C model. I must say, it is the single greatest improvement to the Pawnee I have seen to date. The Lift Kit allows tighter turns and sharper pull ups. The airplane goes where the nose is pointed. The airplane climbs faster, controls pressures are lighter, and it handles the load easier. I find myself turning inside of obstructions I used to have to turn outside of. I have not seen a speed reduction or any adverse characteristics with the Goddard Lift Kit. As far as I’m concerned it’s a win-win situation. Sincerely, Tom Reabe Reabe Spraying Service, Inc., Waupun, WI

NTSB REPORTS Accident Synopses
NTSB Identification: CEN20LA381 Date: 08/18/2020 Location: Ord, NE Aircraft: Piper PA36 Injuries: None A Piper PA-36-285 airplane was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Ord, Nebraska. The pilot was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 agricultural flight. The pilot reported that the airplane was loaded with 40 gallons of fuel and 155 gallons of chemical for the local aerial application flight. The pilot stated that engine start-up was normal and that the surface wind condition was calm. The pilot reported that he initially noticed some dark/black engine exhaust when he cycled the propeller during his before takeoff engine runup; however, he completed another engine runup and recycled the propeller for a second time and did not observe any anomalies with engine operation or the engine exhaust. The pilot proceeded with a takeoff on runway 31. He stated that the takeoff roll was uneventful, and that after liftoff he kept the airplane in ground effect while accelerating to a normal climb airspeed. The pilot reported that the initial climb was uneventful until he made his first turn toward the west, at which time he noticed a decreasing airspeed despite the engine and propeller operating normally at a normal takeoff power setting. The pilot stated that the airspeed continued to decrease closer to an aerodynamic stall speed, but he chose not to dump the chemical load because he felt it could have a negative affect on airplane control and cause the airplane to enter an
B 30 | agairupdate.com
aerodynamic stall. The pilot reported that the airplane’s right wing dropped shortly before impact, which was consistent with the airplane at or near aerodynamic stall. The airplane then collided with terrain in a right wing down attitude. The pilot reported that the weather conditions earlier in the morning at Evelyn Sharp Field Airport (ODX), Ord, Nebraska, had included some rain showers associated with the passage of a weather front; however, at the time of the accident, the winds were calm and there was no precipitation. The airplane was partially disassembled and recovered from the accident site before the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) were advised of the accident. The airplane and its engine will be examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
NTSB Identification: ERA20LA330 Date: 09/23/2020 Location: Floral City, FL Aircraft: Piper PA25 Injuries: Fatal A Piper PA-25 airplane was destroyed when it was involved in accident in Floral City, Florida. The pilot was fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial application flight. According to a solo student pilot who was in the traffic pattern at the nearby Inverness Airport (INF), Inverness, Florida, while turning right downwind for runway 01, he glanced down and saw that the accident airplane was “spraying” and “it looked to me like he pitched up to clear something and then abruptly went down.”
The student pilot subsequently observed fire and smoke emanating from where he last saw the airplane. An additional witness was located on a tractor in a nearby farm field. He reported that he observed the accident airplane spraying from west to east and it had “dipped down two times, coming down near the trees and then coming back up.” He then observed the airplane on its third approach, and it was “real low” and he “never saw him [the airplane] come back up.” He subsequently observed black smoke and heard explosions. According to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) airman records, the pilot held a commercial pilot certificate with ratings for airplane single and multi-engine land, instrument airplane, rotorcraft helicopter and gyroplane, and glider. He also held a flight instructor and mechanic certificates. The pilot was issued an FAA second-class medical certificate April 13, 2020, where he reported a total of 31,100 hours of flight time and 125 hours in the preceding 6 months. According to an FAA inspector who traveled to the accident site, the main wreckage was located inverted in a row of trees that lined the field the airplane was seeding. A postcrash fire consumed a majority of the fuselage; however, all primary flight controls were present with the main wreckage. He further reported that within the field that was being sprayed, about 350 ft directly west of the main wreckage, a large dead tree with vegetation growth contained broken branches and components of the agricultural spraying equipment near its base.

An Eye-Opening Look at Fatigue – the Silent Killer by Ted Delanghe
Physical fatigue can result from a variety of factors such as loss of sleep or any type of physically demanding activities.
Most people can identify with having ‘the nods’ while driving a car. You’ve been on the road for hours on end, with droopy eyes and sleepy time just around the next bend. Your eyes close for just a few seconds, your head drops forward, then jerks upright with a startled look like you just won the lottery, which in a way you did if you are still alive and didn’t have an accident during your mini-siesta at 60 mph. I am sure that if you took a poll among ag pilots with a number of years experience, you would find quite a few who have had these ‘microsleeps’ while flying, either enroute to and from a field, or perhaps even during an actual spray run. While these episodes are the most obvious result of a big dose of fatigue, they are only part of a much larger menu of serious consequences.
A Potent Mixture of Physical and Mental Strain When it comes to accident investigations, fatigue is frequently cited as a contributing factor to pilot error, with effects including reduced attention span, loss of concentration, and a decrease in coordination, all being skills required for safe flight. These factors can also hinder the decision making process, critically important at typical ag aviation altitudes and airspeeds. Physical fatigue can result from a variety of factors such as loss of sleep or any type of physically demanding activities. Mental fatigue can be the result of factors such as working long hours in a stressful environment, constant decision making, or an overcommitment in terms of what can realistically be accomplished in a given time. Sound familiar?
Acute and Chronic – Take Your Pick Fatigue can also be categorized as either acute or chronic, the first being short term and easily dealt with through rest and an appropriate amount of sound sleep. Chronic fatigue is built up over a longer period of time and may require medical attention to alleviate its effects. In both cases the consequences are considerable. The FAA’s brochure Fatigue In Aviation states “Fatigue is a condition characterized by increased discomfort with lessened capacity for work, reduced efficiency of accomplishment, loss of power or capacity to respond to stimulation, and is usually accompanied by a feeling of weariness and tiredness.” It is not difficult to imagine that putting all these factors together is a recipe for disaster. It’s very important to realize that fatigue should not be misconstrued as just being a bit tired. Instead it is a combination of physical and mental exhaustion that can prevent you from safely and effectively completing your job, whatever that may be. It can also lead to a person being short tempered, irritable, having difficulty concentrating on the job at hand, and missing checklist items. All are warning signs that you need to proactively tackle the problem before it becomes a major incident or accident.
Too Fatigued to Fly? So how do you deal with the very serious consequences of fatigue? It starts with the knowledge that one of the most insidious aspects is how it creeps into operations in a subtle way, slowly accumulating until it becomes a major contributing factor in an accident or incident. Because of this ‘sly and crafty’ nature, having a ➤

number of objective signposts alerting you to the gradual onset of fatigue is a good way to start. Fly at an exact altitude to and from the field. On every flight record details such as up and down times, acres treated, load size, etc. Alternate landings between wheel and three point. Fly an exact airspeed on final. Whenever you note you have missed an item or notice a slide in performance, you know you’re falling into the well of fatigue. It’s time to stop flying, take a break, and do whatever is required to get you back into safe and effective operations. As with many things, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Ensure your sleeping arrangements are quiet, comfortable and free from distractions. Try to get at least seven to eight hours of sleep every night. Take a break mid-day and get a half hour of shuteye. Ensure you are eating healthy. Avoid caffeine within six hours of going to bed.
and severe crop infestation, where the stress to push the boundaries of wind, weather and safety can be considerable. Keep in mind that a bent airplane doesn’t cover near as many acres as an intact one.
