COVID-19 Please Go Away!

Aside from the safety of employees, one of the primary intents of displaying the AgAir Update COVID-19 poster in the workplace is potentially avoiding being blamed for negligence by an employee, infected or not.

A 6 | agairupdate.com

If you are like me, you have had about enough of these social distancing and sanitizing efforts over the past few weeks. But, that doesn’t change anything, does it? We can tire of it as much as we want, the threat still remains, albeit less, hopefully. This month’s cover story is about aerial spraying for the COVID-19 virus by two ag-aviation companies in South America. These companies have taken unprecedented steps to help thwart the virus. They, separately, did this by making aerial applications over the city of Santa Cruz, Chile and the Mendoza International Airport in Argentina. The article details how the operators went about the applications, products used and other important aspects of treating the virus by air. Some may scoff at the idea an ag-plane can kill the virus. After reading the article, you will realize efforts were not made to eradicate the virus, but to help reduce the amount of virus present in the areas sprayed. As one of the operators stated when interviewed by AgAir Update, “Surely, killing any of the virus is a good thing.” That was the point of the operations, to assist with those on the ground and inside structures with reducing the virus’ pressure from outside. My last sentence in the article asked, “Why hasn’t this type of application been addressed in the U.S. and other parts of the world?” Does it seem that far-fetched? I believe it is in the presentation to the public. It is not unlike aerial spraying of mosquitoes that doesn’t eradicate the mosquito. But, aerial spraying of mosquitoes does help those spraying on the ground and making efforts to control mosquito breeding grounds. This could be true with aerial spraying a disinfectant for the virus.

Already China (if you can believe anything coming from China) is using drones to treat areas for the virus. Will our industry allow this potential bonanza in aerial applications taken from us by drones? In the article, the Chilean operator treated 600 hectares (1,500 acres) with an application rate of 30 liters/hectare (3 gal/ac) in 3.5 hours, 0700-1030. How long would it take a drone to undertake such a project? Even more important, drones now that tout their ability to spray are doing so with ULV applications, which wouldn’t have worked in the Chilean operation. The spraying made in Chile was LV, low volume, with water as a carrier and no adjuvants. Even so, the 200-micron droplets displayed a coverage of 15-20 droplets per square centimeter. That’s a space of less than 0.5 inch by 0.5 inch. Darn good coverage. Only time will tell if that is enough. This application done ULV by a drone that uses water for the carrier would most likely evaporate within a few feet of exiting the nozzle/atomizer. By now, you should have received your AgAir Update COVID-19 Best Practices poster. All AgAir Update subscribers were mailed these effective posters to be displayed at their operations. I would like to thank AgAir Update’s contributing columnist, Dr. Stan Musick, an FAA Designated Senior Aviation Medical Examiner. Many of you know him from his presentations at various state trade shows. Dr. Stan is not only a practicing physician but also an active SEAT and spray pilot. He knows our industry well. Also, he is available for aviation medical exams. Give him a call. Aside from the safety of employees, one of the primary intents of displaying the AgAir Update

COVID-19 poster in the workplace is potentially avoiding being blamed for negligence by an employee, infected or not. This is kind of like when a lawyer once told me about running off trespassers fishing in a lake that I’m associated with; “Without a No Trespassing sign, the trespasser can deny knowing fishing in that lake would be considered trespassing.” I put out the sign. It is the middle of April as I write this editorial for AgAir Update’s May edition. There is already talk of easing restrictions for the virus. I’m not sure how that will work until there is a vaccine. However, all ag-operators that I have communicated with, worldwide, are conducting business as usual. This includes suppliers to the industry. AgAir Update sent all its subscribers a special COVID-19 Status Report email at the beginning of April. It contained a list of allied industries that provided a status report about how they are doing business. All that submitted were still serving the industry with sales and services. This list is dynamic in that it is updated daily on AgAir Update’s website. You can visit: www.agairupdate.com/agricultural-aviationindustry-covid-19-update/ to view the list. It’s on the Home Page. Our industry is very fortunate to be able to continue “business as usual” during this pandemic. Everyone should take extra steps to be safe, not only flying but avoiding catching the virus. Obviously, an infection would be a set back for the company. Until next month, Keep Turning

Roy started it at Waupun after the war. I flew for him a season in ‘76, I think it was. Then I got into the Imperial Valley plus a few seasons on Air Tankers so I wasn’t back for a long, long time. How ever the last 10 seasons before I was medically (involuntarily) retired I flew for Jeff out of their Plainfield base. They also have a base at Plover. Jeff has since retired and moved to La Crosse. From what I hear now everything is managed by the third generation. Russ Walker Du Quoin, IL

Great Compliment Have just had a great compliment on my article. Hope you are taking care not to get sick. We are at home Best regards, Alan McCracken Kansas City, MO Hello Alan; AgAir Update is working and open for business as usual. We all gotta eat! Great compliment from Steve Benoit. About 20 years ago, I visited him for an article and flew his modified Thrush for an evaluation flight. Good guy! Springtime It must be spring. A little cool for this Ol’ Desert Rat, but the Mocking Bird is back. Have you ever given it any thought to doing a write up on Reabes up in Wisconsin? As I understand it, Grandpa A 10 | agairupdate.com

Good morning Russ; It’s spring here in Georgia for sure! As for the Reabes, I have talked with them over the years and they are an AAU advertiser for the unique products they have designed and STC’d. An article about them would be a great idea and I should talk to them about it. As for the third generation, as far as I know you are correct. I’ve spoken with Damon Reabe, who is very active in the NAAA, several times about different subjects. Maybe AAU will get an invite! I’ve copied Damon. However, I can assure you that it will have to be summertime! It gets damn cold up there. Take care, —Bill

Story Idea To AgAir Update Tell that Woodley girl, she is quick, fast and good on those ads. Also to Mr. Bill, March 17th is the date on our Part 137 operating certificate. Also, ask him if he ever did a story on Dow-Mar Aviation and Don Bair, York Nebraska. I did my ag training there in the fall of ’75. Back then, they gave 100 hours of ag flying

instruction. Also my old friend, Mr. Frank Kelly of AgAviation in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas; now there is some history. Noel Palmer Novelty, MO Hello Noel I trust all is well in Missouri. All good here in Georgia (today). I know Melanie will appreciate your praise. I believe you left off the year on your Part 137 certificate date in your letter. I haven’t had the opportunity to write an article on Dow Croom, but indirectly did last year when he was mentoring KayDee Mitchell, Croom Flying Service at the time (July 2019). Not sure if you meant Don Bair or Jerry Bair. About 20 years or more ago, I did visit Jerry and his son, Craig, in York and wrote an article about their operation. Just about the time you were starting your ag training in York, I was into my second ag season! Yep, an article about Mr. Frank Kelly in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas would be interesting. We’ve been talking with him and Dana, but not recently. Take care and thanks for the handwritten letter; don’t see many of those any more! —Bill

well-respective leader in our industry (you) gives us kudos! We truly hope the poster creates the awareness needed to change our traditional behavior during the pandemic. The silver lining for ag-aviation is everyone still has to eat, regardless of the pandemic. The one thing that would really cause more problems would be a true food shortage. As far as we know, everyone (operators and suppliers) are carrying on business as usual with the added safety precautions. Stay safe! —Bill

their jobs? 4) Is there room for that type of company? 5) Is there a need for drone repairs and drone sales or rentals? 6) Can 10-year old kids be used to fly the patch work missions, as they seem to be good at this type of flying. I’d appreciate your opinion as I’m always trying to find new revenue streams for the companies I work with. I hope you are doing well and I’d love to chat with you to be up dated. All the best, Mike Lugger

Drones My name may ring a bell from the past as I used to work for Jim Mills in Terre Haute and I wrote a few articles for him that reflected the company’s stance on PMA. I was a big proponent for the product and back then, it was like pulling teeth to get folks on board with non-OEM pieces. Now, folks are using PMAs more widely and not just for PT6 engines. I’m now going to return to the PT6 and ag plane maintenance business at Airborne Flying Service and Airborne Turbines. I was at NAAA in Orlando and I did say, “Hi”, but you were quite busy. What I did see in Orlando were drones that really caught my eye. From what I remember, there were always a few corners of a field, or areas too close for comfort for pilots to fly. There were a lot of large companies flying aircraft with 500-gallon hoppers, but also had an Ag-Truck or Pawnee for hard to reach places. Drones would seem to be a good addition to an operator’s equipment list. They wouldn’t have to be a large drone like I saw at the convention. What I wish to find out from your point of view is: 1) Are drones of any size being accepted? 2) Are there any companies that offer “patch work” service to make sure the whole field is sprayed and no other areas are missed? 3) Is this going to be like a second plane for operators - and /or do they use a patch work service company to complete

Hello Mike; Good to hear from you. I’m not a drone expert, by no means. I’ll try to answer your questions as I best know how. 1) Are drones of any size being accepted? On a very small basis. 2) Are there any companies that offer “patch work” service to make sure the whole field is sprayed and no other areas are missed? Yes, there are a few. 3) Is this going to be like a second plane for operators - and /or do they use a patch work service company to complete their jobs? It is too early to tell. I only know of one company that is exclusively spraying with drones. It is an exception, as it only works for a state government. 4) Is there room for that type of company? I doubt it. I don’t see covering enough acres at a competitive price being possible to support the company as a legit, standalone business. 5) Is there a need for drone repairs and drone sales or rentals? I don’t know, but I’m sure flying ag that they will be crashed. 6) Can 10-year old kids be used to fly the patch work missions, as they seem to be good at this type of flying. I certainly hope not. Part of NAAA’s efforts working with the FAA and EPA, as it relates to drones, is to insure drone

pilots follow the same type of rules and regulations ag-pilots have to follow. This would preclude any pilots under 18 years old. A child would not be responsible enough to manage pesticide applications. Hope this helps, —Bill

Extra Copies Bill Just got the April issue. I was extremely pleased with your Augerdan article. I thank you so much. I would like some extra copies of the April issue. Risk Managment Hi from NZ Bill I still very much enjoy AgAir Update and really enjoyed the article on drones. They are still in the “sexy” stage as far as I’m concerned and when the romance agairupdate.com | A 11

AGAIR MAIL - CONTINUED aau@agairupdate.com

is over, I’m thinking there will be many burned fingers. In NZ some misguided regulators have tried to enable drone use in their spraying rules and so far have cocked it up properly. We have a NZ Standard (NZS8409:2004) that I am currently involved in updating and one point that I have made on behalf of NZAAA is that the risks for all applications remain the same risks whether one is applying liquids or solids. There are 11 of them and it doesn’t matter whether an operator is using a

gun and hose, backpack sprayer, tractor mounted boom, helicopter, aeroplane, vineyard sprayer, orchard sprayer - or even drones. Those 11 risks always have to be managed. Clearly the emphasis on individual risks will depend on the machine being used, but the challenge for drone operators in my view, is recognising there is drift - not just managing it. I’ve attached a short table that NZAAA developed when I was Exec Officer which shows the 11 risks and the management we have in our industry.

The table is what all trained ag-pilots should know, but when NZAAA was trying to get regulators to develop risk-based rules, instead of prescriptive ones (e.g. no spraying closer than 200 metres to a boundary), the table was very useful in showing them that we always use a risk-based approach, whether or not they have numbers in their regs. NZAAA was successful in getting a number of regulators to accept this approach. So, their regs are outcome-based, e.g. no adverse effects over the boundary.

I was brought back from retirement on occasion. One mission was to get NZ EPA to accept this risk-based approach. That was a fail because they are still hung up on saying that, “The downwind buffer zone shall be 200 metres.” So, 201 metres is safe? Keep up the good work Bill. Cheers John Sinclair Blenheim, New Zealand Hello John; Always good to hear from you. Thanks for the kudos. Drone integration into agricultural aviation holds an interest to me, mostly because I do see it as an opportunity for current Part 137 operators and partly because I think, unfortunately, drone manufacturers are pushing their product improperly to agaviation and may very well mess things up for all of us, e.g. drift. Your eleven points concerning drift are quite interesting. Most ag-operators are aware of them, but probably not in such an organized manner as the table demonstrates. I dare say the typical drone manufacturer would be clueless to these eleven challenges and hardly know where to start to address them. At least that is the impression I get from what I read. If that is not the case, then they still have a problem if the publisher of an ag-aviation magazine (me) doesn’t know they know, then who knows? Oh well… It will eventually sort itself out, hopefully for the good of all. Take care and please stay in touch,—Bill P.S. - From reading Aviation NZ, your “replacement”, John Nicholson, appears to be doing a superb job as CEO. -BL

COVID-19

INTERNATIONAL

The topic of the coronavirus COVID-19 is on everyone’s mind these days, worldwide. While seemingly every measure possible is being done to slow the spread of this dreadful disease, unprecedented steps are being taken in South America using ag-aircraft to spray for the virus. That’s correct. An aerial application of an organic disinfectant manufactured in Luxembourg is being used to kill the virus on contact. Some critics point out aerial applications will not reach the virus that are inside buildings, cars and other protected spaces. This is true. However, killing the virus that is exposed, that could help slow it from spreading. An operator in Chile, Aero Santa Cruz Fumigaciones Aéreas, owned and operated by Víctor Gonzáles, at 7 a.m. on Easter Sunday, made the country’s first aerial application for the treatment of coronavirus. In an WhatsApp interview with Víctor, AgAir Update was told the details of the application. Aero Santa Cruz has been featured on two occasions in AgAir Update in the past 23 years. Almost three weeks before the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in Santa Cruz, before worldwide mandatory

stay-at-home instructions were issued, Víctor Gonzáles was attending a barbeque with his adult children and their friends when they jokingly asked him, “why are you not spraying for the virus?” All laughed and Víctor said, “Ok, you tell them to get the authorizations to do such a thing!”. It wasn’t long before the mayor of Santa Cruz, William Arévalo, heard of this conversation and contacted Víctor, asking if an aerial application could be done. With the confidence of 40 years of ag flying, Víctor told the mayor he could make the application, but he did not know if it would work or not. Nobody knew. Mayor Arévalo went right to work. He contacted the central health department (for Chile) to obtain the permission needed for an aerial application over the city. At the health department’s recommendation, a local supplier, GreenMax, donated 120 liters of BioClean for the application. Aero Santa Cruz donated the aircraft and its related expenses. The mayor also obtained clearance from the DGAC (Chile’s FAA). The mayor was told that with Víctor’s experience and the country in a state of “catastrophe”, they would grant the waiver to fly over the city. ➤

As for the application of a disinfectant over the city, permits were not needed from the health department specifically for the product as it is organic and considered to be safe. However, the health department authorized the application of BioClean anyway. With all permissions in place, Aero Santa Cruz’s AT-402B was loaded with 1,500 liters of water (396 gal) that included 10 liters (2.64 gal) of BioClean in the mix. No adjuvants were used. The application rate was set at 30 l/ha (3 gal/ac) using a 40-meter (131-foot) swath. The ambient temperature was 12°C (54°F) and 76% humidity. Twelve applications were completed by 10:30 a.m. A total of 600 hectares (1,482 acres) were treated. Víctor said Aero Santa Cruz did not receive any complaints. Actually, Santa Cruz citizens were standing in the streets waving white cloths as a symbol of “Thank You”. Many people called Víctor to congratulate and thank him. He

became the town hero. Other Chilean cities have been calling inquiring about a similar application. The AT-402B was outfitted with 41 CP Products nozzles set to create 200 micron droplets. Coverage was checked and found to be 15-20 droplets per square centimeter. “Bill, I believe the application will make a difference. We know that we got good coverage over anything outside of buildings, cars and other enclosed spaces. BioClean is a safe product with a proven record of efficiency in other types of sanitation. I have been told that it only lasts for about 24 hours. The company is working on another similar product that uses nanoparticles of copper and may last up to 15 days. Any reduction in the amount of virus has to be a good thing,” explains Víctor. “Furthermore, by using our AgNav GPS systems, we are able to accurately treat the city in mass and very quickly, unlike ground machines that can only get to certain parts, or ➤

drones that do not have the capacity.” Aero Santa Cruz has been in business for over 30 years. It operates three ag-planes; one PT6A-34AGpowered AT-402B and two 260 hp Piper Pawnees. Primary crops treated are wine vineyards, avocados, walnut trees, wheat, and rice. The AT-402B was bought from AeroGlobo in Brazil and Lane Aviation of the U.S. Chilean Sebastian Ramirez of AeroGlobo delivered the aircraft. When asked about Aero Santa Cruz’s precautions for COVID-19 at its operation, Víctor responded, “It is our off-season, so there is not much going on here now. We are using two employees that work half a day before going home. Our private airport, located on the family farm, is a large area, so it is easy for them to maintain their social distance. We also make sure

all employees receive their annual, seasonal flu vaccines. Although that won’t stop COVID-19, maybe it will prevent them from having both the flu and COVID-19 at the same time.” Aero Santa Cruz is not the only company that has treated congested areas for the COVID-19 virus. Earlier in April, Aerotec of Argentina treated the Mendoza International Airport by air. A chlorine based solution was used. The aircraft was a Cessna C-188 outfitted with rotary atomizers. This all brings into focus the question: Why hasn’t this type of application been addressed in the U.S. and other parts of the world? Why wouldn’t reducing the number of viruses outside hinder the spread of the virus? One thing is for sure, it would be a bonanza of work for the aerial application industry!

The ag-plane is a tool that provides solutions to many problems due to its range and speed. Argentina’s national ag-aviation association, FeArCA, reports that through the action of ag-aircraft, a cleaning and disinfection aerial operation was carried out at the Mendoza International Airport using water-sensitive application techniques. The applications were administered by the Mendoza Institute of Health and Environmental Quality and Aerotec, an ag-aviation company, with the aim of fighting the CONVID-19 Cornovirus by creating healthy conditions in air spaces with high passenger traffic. According to statements made by the Governor of Mendoza, “It is essential to carry out this type

of action, in order to guarantee the healthiness of airport facilities and areas of immediate influence, to prevent the circulation of the COVID-19 virus.” FEARCA hopes this public health management model by a private ag-opeator will quickly, further advance this type of operation at other air terminals in Argentina and as well as urban areas with possible circulation of the virus. FeArCA reminds its members that to qualify for the exception for aerial applications during the Coronovirus pandemic, per ANAC’s Resolution No. 102/2020, companies must request authorization via email. Aerial applications carried out during quarantine is considered a fundamental link in food production. However, it is a priority

to beforehand complete the authorization process to avoid problems with appropriate aviation and insurance authorities.

Ag-Planes Fight Dengue Airplanes are extremely useful tools for the control of insects that threaten human health, in this case the dengue transmitting mosquito. Through aerial spraying, the number of mosquitoes can be reduced more quickly and effectively, since the application capacity with respect to land is greater and quicker with an ag-plane. Argentine aerial applicators are being called on because of an epidemic of mosquitoes that infect people with viruses such as zika, dengue or chikungunya. Hundreds of cases have been confirmed in Buenos Aires city and province, as well as in Formosa, Misiones, Salta, Corrientes, Santa Fe, La Rioja, Santiago del Estero, Entre Ríos, Tucumán, Jujuy, Catamarca, San Luis and San Juan. Aerial applications are conducted with products that do not imply any risk to the environment or human health, is authorized by the National Service for Agri-Food Health and Quality (Senasa) and by the National Administration of Medicines, Food and Medical Technology (Anmat). It should be noted that they also have the endorsement of the Ministry of Health, the National Administration of Civil Aviation (ANAC), the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries and the Network of Good Agricultural Practices (Red BPA). It is important to note the applications are endorsed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) where the insecticides that were used have been studied and certified for their effectiveness and safety. Also, the World Health Organization (WHO), in its practical guide on “Spraying Insecticides in the Air to Fight Vectors and Pests in Public Health”, recommends aerial application as one of the A 22 | agairupdate.com

methods to combat the mosquito and describes how it should be applied. This confirms aerial application does not harm the environment and people’s health.

Aerial Applicator Donates Food In times of great difficulties, such as those being experienced by the entire world, attitudes emerge that are worth highlighting. This is the case of Fabián Macías, owner of an agricultural aviation company and agricultural producer in Las Varas, Córdoba province. Specifically, “El Flaco”, as he is called in his hometown, distributed 10 food bags valued at $ 10,000 pesos ($150 USD) each among those who need it most. “Despite controversies with the National Government, agriculture in Argentina is the sector that is having the best of times at the moment, because we can continue producing. My message to farmers and aerial applicators is that we try to make one more sacrifice, that we think of those people who cannot work or eat. I wish that whoever can will do so. You will feel good in your heart and will make a great contribution to the community,” Macías told the media. In this same sense, four aero applicators from Bragado, Buenos Aires, together with the partners of the local branch of the Agrarian Federation, because of the coronavirus pandemic decided to make a solidarity gesture by donating $84,000 pesos ($1,300 USD) to the San Luis Municipal Hospital. From FeArCA, we celebrate these type of actions. It is evident there is a sense of social responsibility by the aero applicator, who works where he lives, together with his family, loved ones, friends and those who accompany him daily in his work. Working Serial #1 Ag-Cat Being Restored by Tim (Toby) McPherson Tall Towers Aviation, Inc, Page, ND

The data plate for Serial #1 G-164 Ag-Cat manufactured by Schweizer Aircraft Corporation, Elmira, New York - 1958.

A 24 | agairupdate.com

If you haven’t heard, ag-aviation will celebrate 100 years of ag-flying in 2021. That was the first year an airplane was used to protect a crop. In 1921, catalpa trees in Ohio were treated, which were used for telegraph poles. The application was arsenic dust for controlling Sphinx Moth caterpillars that stripped the catalpa trees’ leaves, killing the trees. This became known as “Crop Dusting”. Shortly after, pilots started dusting cotton. John Wakefield, a fellow North Dakota operator, and I found Serial #1, 1958 G-164 model Ag-Cat (N10200) earlier this spring. The logbooks and historical info were all there, verifying it is the actual Serial #1 Ag-Cat. In the past few years, it has been working in Kansas. The NAA museum in Jackson, Mississippi has protype #1. We have the actual working Serial #1. John and I are in the process of a complete restoration to original, including leading edge booms, open cockpit, a small windshield, fabric on the top of the wings and ailerons with an original R-670 Lycoming engine. Our plans are to make the aircraft as detailed to the original as possible. If anybody has pictures or historical information about early Ag-Cats, we would sure like to see and hear about it. The ag-aviation industry has been very helpful and supportive of the project. We plan to display Serial #1 Ag-Cat at the National Ag Commissioners Conference in Medora, North Dakota on August 31-September 2, 2020. Doug Goehring, North Dakota’s Ag Commissioner, is president of the 50-state Ag Commissioner’s Association. The conference is always at the current president’s home state in the year of presidency. Commissioner Goehring has been helpful and enthusiastic about displaying Serial #1 at their conference. Commissioner Goehring farms and knows the importance of the ag plane to the farmer. His son-in-law is an aerial applicator/ crop duster, too. Ideally, this could be the kick-off of the

industry’s 100th anniversary celebration/ recognition tour this fall. This would give us four months to make this happen. Oh yeah, I forgot to say, we have a farming and spraying season between now and completion of our project! After the kick-off in Medora, there are a couple of state conventions around the country this fall and if somebody wanted to fly it to a convention, it is possible that could happen. The NAAA convention is in Savannah, Georgia in December this year. Having the aircraft on display there could be a goal for it. Next summer (2021), we would like the aircraft promoted as much as possible; fly-ins, airshows, Oshkosh, etc. and end up at the 2021 NAAA convention in Palm Springs, California. I am in the process of refurbishing the plane. The farming and spraying seasons will be here shortly. We have much work to do on this airplane, but meeting the fall deadline is very doable. I have rebuilt a number of Ag-Cats during my 43 years in the ag-aviation business. The purpose of this letter first of all is to tell AgAir Update readers about the project. It is officially an NDAAA project with John and I taking the lead on the rebuild. We have asked for some local (ND) help in preparing the project for painting. Cleaning and sanding parts to ready for paint takes a lot of time. I have most everything rebuilt that needs it and have started painting. The painting process will continue as parts are prepared for paint. John and I are doing most of the work on the project. Being very proud to be “Crop Dusters”, we wanted to give back and continue promoting the professional image we trust the next generation will maintain for the next 100 years.

A 28 | agairupdate.com

The partnership between Texas-based aircraft manufacturer Air Tractor and Pratt & Whitney dates back decades and together the companies have achieved many milestones along the way. Most recently, Air Tractor installed a PT6A65AG engine into a new AT-602 agricultural spray plane. The engine happens to be the 20,000th engine produced by the Pratt & Whitney Lethbridge, Alberta facility. “What a milestone,” remarked Jim Hirsch, president of Air Tractor. “We couldn’t be more excited that this engine is powering an Air Tractor. The PT6 engines manufactured by Pratt & Whitney are legendary for their performance and reliability. Our companies both share a commitment to producing the very best products for our customers. We are looking forward to many more milestones to come.”

The new Air Tractor, with serial number AT-6021308, went to Air Tractor dealer Frost Flying. On April 9, Garrett Frost delivered the airplane to its new owner, Scott Delong of Farmers Cooperative in Dorchester, Nebraska. The popular AT-602 with its 630-gallon hopper capacity, wide swath width and fast ferry times is a favorite among aerial applicators. To date, Air Tractor has built more than 300 AT-602 airplanes. They can be found working all around the world. Pratt & Whitney engines are flown by more than 1,100 airlines and operations in 200 plus countries. The company’s long-standing commitment to innovation has made them a key player in the development of the Canadian aerospace industry. The company has introduced 100 new engines powering a variety of aircraft during the past 25 years.

COVID-19 Public Policy Developments Impacting the Aerial Application Industry

A

s we continue to experience the impact of the novel coronavirus on our lives, many aerial applicators have questions about the status of various regulatory issues. NAAA has successfully worked with government

agencies in designating crop input services, such as aerial application, as an

essential service and preventing enforcement actions and/or extending expiration dates for expired licenses. Here are some of the key coronavirus-related regulatory developments aerial applicators should be aware of. Aerial Application Deemed an Essential Service Crop input services, such as aerial application, have been deemed critical infrastructure industries by the federal government, which means they shall continue without any disruption. You should provide a document for everyone at your operation to carry on their person that clarifies they are an employee of a critical infrastructure industry. NAAA has prepared examples in Word and PDF files that you can print on company letterhead and provide to your employees to sign and carry with them. This can be presented to law enforcement in the event an employee is stopped in a shelter in place or similar area. Visit AgAviation. org/covidresources to download the sample document.

Check TFRs and Airport Closures Air support may yet play a role in fighting the coronavirus and TFRs may be needed in the event of large-scale aerial supply operations. Additionally, smaller airports may have momentarily closed or have been forced to close by state or local regulations. If the airport is open, be sure to check to see if fuel services are available.

FAA Medical Certification The FAA issued a policy that suspends enforcement against individuals with first, second or third class medical certificates expiring between March 31 and June 30, 2020. Be sure to check with your insurance underwriter to ensure you are covered if your licensed expired during this timeframe and a situation occurs resulting in having to file a claim.

UNITED STATES

NAAA is continuing to work with the FAA and is urging the agency to undertake an emergency rulemaking to formally extend medical certificates and not simply stop enforcement actions. The FAA has indicated it is working on a Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR) to possibly address this and other issues, such as pilot currency requirements. Regardless, NAAA recommends ag aviators still renew their medical certificates if they are able make an appointment with an Aviation Medical Examiner.

pesticide control officials’ responses are available at tiny.cc/aapco-cert-testing-survey. COVID-19 — What’s An Ag Pilot To Do? As the knowledge about this disease evolves rapidly, what you may read today is old news by tomorrow. With that disclaimer, here are some things that may be helpful. The Coronavirus (the virus that causes COVID19) is spread by contact with the aerosol (generated with coughing or sneezing), contact with droplets (larger than the aerosol particles) generated with cough/sneeze, or by contact with respiratory secretions that remain on surfaces (door knobs, stair rails, etc.) That makes avoidance a matter of eliminating those contact points. When in the cockpit, the risk is obviously low. In the office, or areas where contact with the public occurs, wipe surfaces frequently. (I get ridiculed for spraying everything in our office with Lysol every couple of hours…). The “six foot rule” has basis in science. Most of the aerosolized droplets will fall to the floor in under six feet. Stay six or more feet away from people. Hand washing is effective. The membrane on the virus is susceptible to soap. If necessary to immediately touch something previously handled by someone else, wash hands afterwards. Virus is shed at a high rate for the 3-5 days prior to the B 6 | agairupdate.com

onset of symptoms. If someone is even mildly symptomatic, they need to isolate themselves immediately. Protecting Through Data Analysis

ARMOR’s trend monitoring and incident reporting provides their clients with extremely helpful alerts.

B 8 | agairupdate.com

For several years, general aviation has been transitioning to better, faster, and more accurate technology. This is particularly true in the aerial application and aerial firefighting industries. The increased efficiency, safety, and productivity easily justify the expenses and learning curves associated with the advances in technology. This is truly the case for a Georgia based company that is currently offering a new service to aviation, and has taken a special interest in aerial applicators and Firefighters. ARMOR Data Services, LLC is a data analytics and consulting firm that takes the millions of data points stored in the memory of your MVP or JPI systems and sorts, monitors and reports on incidents, pilot habits, as well as offering trend monitoring. This firm does this while maintaining focus on safety, productivity and cost efficiency. ARMOR is well named as they protect the pilots and aircraft that they service. Companies worldwide, including ag and firebombing operations in Canada, US, Africa, South America and Europe have their fleets protected by this new service and have already experienced the benefits. Randy Sandstrom, the owner and chief pilot of Prairie Dusters, an aerial spraying company, has described some of the benefits of using ARMOR as “lower maintenance costs, better insurance rates, improved efficiency, but more importantly

increasing the safety of pilots and our company.” Randy, who flies the first H80- Switchback in Canada’s SEAT program, knows this firsthand because he has his agriculture and firebombing aircraft protected by ARMOR. ARMOR’s trend monitoring and incident reporting provides their clients with an extremely helpful alert for things like hard landings, over temps, over torques, engine and prop over-speeds, and much more. ARMOR’s OEM trained aircraft technicians and IAs monitor the data per each aircraft and engine mating to ensure that the reports are accurate and customized for each operation and their particular mission. ARMOR is currently developing a customer dashboard and app that will make the reports and information sharing even more convenient and readily accessible for pilots and ground crews wherever they may be in the world. With customizable reports, free video consultations, training for data downloads and uploads, as well as desktop applications that make the data transfer a 2-click process, ARMOR works hard to keep ahead of the ever-changing technology and to meet their customer’s needs. If the Weather Looks Tricky, Land and Live

A simple concept: land your helicopter if you face hazards that jeopardize safety.

B 10 | agairupdate.com

Every day, FAA Rotorcraft Standards Branch employees review accident reports. One thing is clear. We could substantially cut the accident rate if pilots stopped flying into bad weather. This fact has not been lost on the helicopter community. The Helicopter Association International (HAI) has been promoting its Land & Live campaign since 2013. It’s a simple concept: land your helicopter if you face hazards that jeopardize safety. “As pilot in command, only you can decide if you should continue the flight,’’ states HAI’s Land & Live web page. “Will you make the promise to always land when safety’s at stake?” The FAA Rotorcraft Standards Branch promotes a similar message through this column, safety forums, and meetings with industry and advocacy groups. If the weather looks tricky, delay takeoff or land. Industry-government teams such as the International Helicopter Safety Foundation (IHSF) and the United States Helicopter Safety Team (USHST) participate as well with weather-related videos, essays, and reports at ihst.org and ushst. org respectively. In September 2017, the USHST released 22 helicopter safety enhancements (H-SEs) to improve safety. Four H-SEs were related to visibility or unintended flight in instrument meteorological conditions (UIMC) and are available at ushst.org. This message is getting through to the helicopter community. FAA records show that about 19-percent of the 104 U.S. fatal accidents from 2009 through 2013 were caused by UIMC, icing, wind shear, or thunderstorms. That number

dropped to about 15-percent for the 94 fatal accidents recorded from 2014 through 2018. UIMC is when a pilot inadvertently flies from visual flight rules into IMC, losing visual reference to terrain because of clouds, fog, thunderstorms, haze, or other conditions. If pilots consequently fly closer to the ground, they can encounter wires, trees, or towers. Experts involved in the FAA Weather Technology in the Cockpit (WTIC) program are researching ways to improve the presentation of weather information in the cockpit, weather technology and information, weather-related pilot training, and pilots’ ability to interpret weather information. Recommendations are expected this fall.

Work is underway to enhance the Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) tool that runs as a desktop application. Additional work is underway to enhance the Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) tool that runs as a desktop application. According to Ian Johnson, FAA WTIC human factors lead, the tool is designed for low-altitude operations and can provide information on ceiling, visibility, flight

category, winds, relative humidity, and temperature. As Johnson notes, “WTIC looks at how weather information is rendered and its parameters (accuracy, update rate, forecast/nowcast, etc.). It also includes identifying issues with weather sources and procedures. Helicopters fly/land in areas that frequently do not have weather sensors or weather cameras. If pilots are forced to rely on information from a more distant sensor, it may not represent current weather conditions at the landing site.” Until we determine better ways to address weather issues, the FAA recommends that pilots follow IHSF’s eight golden rules: 1. Always obtain an aviation forecast 2. Expect conditions to be worse than forecast. 3. Check actual conditions against the forecast. 4. Identify alternative routes and suitable diversion airfields just in case. 5. Always carry enough fuel for unexpected situations. 6. Scan the sky and horizon for possible problems and note local surface winds. 7. Check weather reports while flying. 8. Be prepared to divert, turn around, or land. Make sure you have an alternative course of action should weather conditions preclude the completion of the flight as planned. In other words, don’t be afraid to land — and live.

FERNÃO CAPELO

Dr. Rogério Ribeiro Cardozo roger.cardozo@hotmail.com.br

The Impact of Non-Approved Parts on Flight Safety in Agricultural Aviation One problem that has a huge impact on operational safety in aviation worldwide is the use of non-approved, noncertified parts or even original factory parts that does not have proper documentation. Such parts are called “Unnaproved Parts”, “Counterfeit Parts”, or “Bogus Parts”, as they do not have traceability. Traceability is the ability to reconstruct the historical past of a part or component from its manufacture to the present day. When a part does not have its documentation, or has the documentation altered, it becomes a “Bogus Part”. This problem occurs worldwide. The clandestine parts and components market reaches global levels. It is necessary that ag-operators and maintenance managers have the wisdom and firmness to resist enchantments of a more affordable price. In agricultural aviation, these functions are often confused. The pilot may perform maintenance, as well as purchase materials, parts and equipment for operation and if not a licensed mechanic not understand the ramifications of unapproved parts. The data chart refers to the number of reports of suspected parts not approved for years between 2011 and 2015 in the USA. Brazil does not have statistical data as accurate as this. Unfortunately, only when an accident occurs is the data collected and entered in the database of the appropriate agencies. This problem can affect the safety of operations by installing equipment that is not approved or may often not be made of aeronautical-type materials. Once, while taking a CENIPA

B 12 | agairupdate.com

(Brazilian Air Force Accident Investigation and Prevention Center) course, the class was presented with reports and photographs of bogus parts. It was thought to be a joke. Was not! They were photos taken from accident reports made by highly qualified, accredited personnel. All equipment installed on an aircraft must have a Supplemental Type Approval Certificate (STC) issued by the product manufacturer and approved by the aircraft or engine manufacturer, or an equivalent document that attests that its installation will not cause any type of interference that impairs the operation of the aircraft. This document accompanies every kit of accessories produced under license from the aircraft manufacturer. It is worth remembering that all aeronautical material, besides the specific certification, goes through an exhaustive quality control process which enables its use in the most diverse conditions that includes adverse conditions of temperature and pressure above its design and manufacture. What may seem cheap initially when a part or component is offered at practically half the price, can be extremely expensive. The price of an accident is incalculable. It can compromise the existence of a company, not to mention the lives that can be taken away by such an attitude. Prof. Mestre Rogerio Ribeiro Cardozo is an Aircraft Maintenance Technician, helicopter specialist, business administrator and university professor with a Masters in Environmental Science and Technology. Since 2012, he has been writing in the environmental and sustainability area, having published academic papers and articles involving administration and sustainability, including works about aerospace services oriented by it. In the research area, he developed a new type of plastic totally produced with PVC waste and aeronautical engine oil waste, which earned him a nomination for a Doctorate at the University of São Paulo in the area of building materials development (Architecture and Urbanism). He is also Seripa V Certified Element in the Agricultural Aviation Safety area.

Are You Smoking? by Dennis R Gardisser, WRK of Arkansas LLC

Weather at the time and location of any spray application is essential. Careful monitoring of the weather during all applications is important for both knowledge of the event and possibly defense of an application, if it later scrutinized. Most agricultural aircraft have the ability to release a dollop of smoke by spraying a lightweight oil into the exhaust. The use of smoke allows applicators to closely verify the exact direction of air movement throughout the duration of an application. The verification of velocity isn’t quite as exact. Applicators might not be able to determine minute differences in wind speed. By doing a daily observation over time and comparing that to actual measurements, applicators should easily be able to professionally estimate if the wind speed at the application site mimics recorded values closely. By knowing the direction and speed, applicators may adjust as appropriate for any potential undesirable movement of their spray. This could result in leaving a larger buffer downwind or simply waiting for a time frame with a more desirable wind direction. This is just one of many tools an operator has at their disposal to mitigate any drift potential. The use of smoke and observation results need to be recorded if the accuracy of any application is challenged. I’ve told many applicators, “If the use B 14 | agairupdate.com

of smoke and the observation isn’t recorded – it didn’t happen.” This means that it is much more convincing to a regulator or, if you’re unlucky enough to be in civil proceedings, to a judge or jury, if the use of smoke is reflected on the job records. A simple statement of smoke use from applicators after the fact doesn’t seem to be as convincing. With that in mind, the recommendation would be to include a check box or statement with VBS (Verified By Smoke) included on the weather observations placed on job tickets or records to reflect this application practice on every job. I have been told by some GPS manufacturers that they might be able to show a tic mark on log files to reflect smoke use in the future. At a minimum, weather records should show wind speed and direction at the start and finish of each application. Any major changes throughout the application should be noted as well. Smoke On!! Gardisser received a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering in 1979, a master’s degree in 1981 and a PhD in 1992, all from the University of Arkansas. He is currently the president of WRK of Arkansas, an application technology and aviation insurance company. He has been inducted into the National Agricultural Aviation Hall of Fame and the Arkansas Aviation Hall of Fame.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Turbines of Arkansas - One Fine Shop by Bill Lavender

Jim Mills II installs a WAG GPS unit on a brand-spanking new Ayres 510-gallon Turbo Thrush owned by Harold Scifres of Turrell Flying Service in Turrell, Arkansas.

B 16 | agairupdate.com

WEST MEMPHIS, AR - I’ve come to the conclusion that the best way to handle your business insurance is to find an agent you trust and stick with them. I also feel that if you are a turbine engine operator, that same methodism is appropriate. There are few things in an ag operator’s business that are so critical to his safety and his economic well-being as his aircraft’s powerplant, particularly if it is a turbine engine. As part of a four-phase journey through Mississippi and Arkansas, I stopped for a long awaited visit with Jim Mills II of Turbines of Arkansas in West Memphis. On several occasions at trade shows, Jim had asked me to come by for a visit; to take a look at how they did things in West Memphis. This year I promised myself to do just that, it was worth the effort. Turbines of Arkansas is a subsidiary of Turbines, Inc. of Terre Haute, Indiana. Jim II (I’ll call Little Jim) is the son of its owner, Big Jim. You could call it a seamless operation. Turbines of Arkansas can handle just about anything an operator might need from its shop in West Memphis or in the field. But, if it is a major problem, or an overhaul for a

PT6A, then Jim can quickly transfer the engine to Turbines, Inc. in Illinois for the needed service. Turbines of Arkansas was formed in January 1993. Little Jim has run the shop since the beginning. The shop performs factory warranty work on the PT6A turbo prop, even if Turbines of Arkansas didn’t perform the original work. The shop offers 24-hour AOG service. Jim’s office phone is call forwarded to his cell phone after hours. “Bill, my cell phone is on all the time, ready to answer an operator’s call when needed.” Heck of a good battery! Turbines of Arkansas also performs airframe repairs, annual inspections, 100-hour inspections, services all types of ag aircraft air-conditioning systems and is a WAG air-conditioning dealer. The company is also a WAG GPS dealer, offering installation and service for the WAG unit, as well as any of the other GPS units. You see, Jim is an IA. And that makes for a full-service shop, that not only specializes in turbine engine work, but any other needs the operator may need while at the shop. PT6A turbine engine work is Turbines of

Arkansas’ speciality. I wanted to pick something from Little Jim’s brain that would help the turbine engine operator. So, I asked. Jim informed me there were several points of interest an operator could note that would, in the long run, pay-off by saving dollars while operating a Pratt & Whitney turbine engine. “We use a 30-volt start cart to start the engine,” Jim explained. Well, I was aware that an auxiliary power unit (APU) was the smart way to start a turbine engine. This allows the engine to spin faster during start up, thus creating a cooler start, as well as providing a secondary power source should the first one fail at the critical moment during the start. However, I wasn’t aware you could crank up the volts to 30 without harming the starter-generator.

Jim informed me there were several points of interest an operator could note that would, in the long run, pay-off by saving dollars while operating a Pratt & Whitney turbine engine. Jim says a self-contained manufactured start cart is the best way to start the engine, but the next best way is the homemade version that places two 12-volt and a 6-volt or one 24-volt and a 6-volt battery in series, providing 30 volts for the start. He also recommended that every start, not just the first one for the day, use the APU. Although a good APU can cost as much as $5,000, Jim speculated the operator will save enough dollars within the first three or four hot section inspections (HSI) to pay for the APU. Jim recommended the operator upgrade his startergenerator to the Wet-Spline version SB 1386, whenever the splines become worn and the gear needs replacing. The dry version has to be inspected and greased every 100 hours. The Wet-Spline conversion eliminates P&WC’s Service Bulletin, # 1355. Typically, a turbine engine is an efficient engine to operate, with few problems. However, like anything mechanical, it can have problems, especially with accessories. Turbines of Arkansas keeps a good inventory of accessories, including prop governors, starter-generators, over speed governors, bleed valves, fuel nozzles and fuel control units; just about anything you would need. There’s Rivers Powell’s Arkansas Aeronautics in the same building with Turbines of Arkansas that can quickly handle any electrical needs. And, just across the Mississippi River, Memphis Propeller can solve prop

problems. Of course, Memphis is the home of FedEx and within minutes, Jim can have a part delivered anywhere in the world. Jim pointed out that prop balancing was so important that all of his customers have it done. If there is wear in a rotatable part, maybe a part that can be postponed replacing a few tach hours, a balanced prop can make all the difference in how long that can be. However, having a balanced prop means the rotatable part would have lasted longer in the first place. Next on Jim’s list was the importance of clean fuel. He noted that often a new turbine operator would try to use the same ground fuel system as he did with piston-powered engines. Usually it doesn’t work. Jim suggested that without hesitation an operator should install a high-quality, one micron water separator filter in the system. If the operator discovers that he is having problems with the filter stopping up after his first delivery of jet fuel, then that is a good indication the tank needs replacing. Trying to stretch dollars on a ground fueling system doesn’t pay in a turbine engine operation. All it will mean is the engine’s fuel system will need more servicing and possibly lead to HSI distress. HSI distress can cost money, big money. The bottom line is the fuel nozzles need to be serviced every 250-300 hours and remain clean. That means the fuel pumped into the aircraft needs to be clean to begin with. The airframe fuel filter needs replacing every 100 hours. Wire strikes mean money, too; money about to be spent. Contact your insurance agent immediately. In most cases the insurance company will instruct you to inspect and clean the chip detector and oil screen, run the engine 10 hours, and then check the chip detector and oil screen for metal. No metal, continue inspections as recommended by the P&WC book. Turbines of Arkansas is not in agreement with that procedure. Almost in all cases, a known prop strike does some damage. They recommend that the operator get the insurance company involved and that the gear box be torn down for inspection, the prop governor and over speed governor be sent out for overhaul, as well as the prop. Delaying this with interval inspections looking for metal could lead to a catastrophic engine failure. Turbines of Arkansas doesn’t believe it is worth the risk. It is possible that should the engine fail catastrophically after a period of time since the

wire strike, there could be problems with coverage from the insurance company. Remember, there is almost always some damage done during a wire strike, whether it be an arcing on the bearing or indentations on the bearings from the microsecond change in RPM’s. You asked, here it is! Jim says operators who take the time to record their starts and cycles and follow a trend monitoring program can often head-off problems before they become unmanageable. Trend monitoring will point out any engine misuse. It will also aid the engine shop when troubleshooting a problem. Any change in the engine’s parameters under duplicated conditions, would be an indication there are problems that need to be addressed. The last thing Jim advised me about turbine engine operations was to not extend the 1000hour HSI on the newer PT6A turbines to the Pratt & Whitney recommended 1,750 hours. It’s not that the engine will not safely make the inspection intervals, as much as extending the time interval exposes the operator to a more expensive HSI at the 1750-hour inspection. One true thing about a turbine engine is that it cost “X” amount of dollars each operational hour, “Pay me now, or pay me later”. In so many cases paying later cost more than a little preventive maintenance cost now. A good example of this is should an engine develop a small crack in the power section at 900 hours since the last time the engine was opened, odds are that the repair would be less expensive at the 1000-hour HSI as opposed to the 1750-hour HSI. Estimated extra investment cost for 1,000-hour HSI to be about $1,000, if nothing is found in need of repair. Yeah, you gotta know your turbine mechanic. With his advice, a turbine engine operator can avoid a lot of expensive problems. The folks at Turbines of Arkansas have the expertise and the resources to keep an operator out of trouble, that’s for sure. Jim treated me to lunch while telling me how he buys cars off the Internet and just picked up a good deal from a friend on a classic Harley Davidson. Time to head south, one more stop in Leland, Mississippi was in the flight plan. Next month, I visit with a Mississippian operation that has been around since 1946 in one form or another. Don’t miss it.

later ferried for the old Ferry Command. After the war, he went to work “cold turkey” as a duster pilot for the legendary Henry “Pop” Elliott. Elliott was one of the original Huff-Daland dusters and in 1946 operated his own service at Cleveland, Mississippi. During the 1946 season Ueding flew Elliott’s beloved Travel-Airs and, after learning the ropes, went into business for himself in Vincennes. Ueding worked mainly for local farmers and canning firms, and was one of the first to offer regular, dependable service to Indiana farmers. As business developed, he expanded the size of his fleet and went about obtaining USDA contracts for large-scale grasshopper control work, timber spraying, fire ant control programs, and even boll weevil control programs in the Deep South. The advent of the miracle material Mirex made controlling the imported fire ant practical and, for a number of seasons, Ueding’s planes and equipment were leaders in this field. They also worked the Canadian spruce budworm programs, beginning in 1953 and continuing into the 1960s. In 1964 the firm procured and operated two helicopters. But after two years, Ueding returned to fixed-wing Stearmans. Until 1965, the company operated 450 horsepower Stearmans exclusively, but then added Piper Pawnees and later the Thrush line. Ueding’s firm has a long and honorable history with a great sense of permanence. Such firms have added much to the stature and integrity of the business. A relatively unsung man who did much to foster the industry was the late Hugh Wheelless, Sr., founder of Dothan Aviation at Dothan, Alabama. Hugh was a World War II pilot who entered the flying business directly after the War flying Stearmans. Early in his career, he began specializing in government contract work, particularly fire ant control programs and wide-scale grasshopper work in the West. Hugh was a visionary who quickly recognized that single-engine Stearmans were limited in scope. He began purchasing multi-engined surplus war aircraft and converting them for use in agriculture. Huge tank/hoppers were installed and, for some time, Dothan Aviation had almost a monopoly on wide-scale work of this nature. Several B-17s wound up in the fleet and with Stearmans for the small jobs, Wheelless could and did contract for both large and small jobs. The firm prospered until his untimely passing

some years ago. His son, Hugh Wheelless, Jr., took over the business and ran it quite successfully until he divested himself of all of his aircraft holding to devote his full time to other commercial ventures. The Wheelless firm contributed significantly to the expansion of the ag flying industry, particularly in multi-engine operation and imported fire ant control. Techniques developed by this firm in the fire ant eradication program were used with great efficiency until Mirex was banned by the EPA. This was one of the industry’s most successful and meaningful programs and contributed enormously to the success and well-being of farming and rural communities in the Deep South. Like DDT, its banishment was built along unsound lines. The general public lost in the long run. Given the opportunity, the average duster pilot is a traveling man. This penchant for wanting to see what is on the other side of the mountain moves him around. As a result, ag flying jobs in glamorous, out-of-the-way places never go lacking for applicants. In the Central American republics, particularly in Nicaragua and Guatemala, a huge build-up in farm acreage took place in the 1950s. This was especially true for cotton land in Nicaragua. The way was quickly paved for massive aerial application programs for insect control. Enterprising businessmen were quick to take advantage of the situation. Nicaragua was, and still is, a land of contrasts. The cultivated and populated areas were literally chopped out of the jungle by hand. Timber-clad mountains taper off into incredibly fertile valleys and farmers began operating plantations of enormous size and scope. The tropical climate, with a 12-month growing season and almost daily rain showers, is exactly what the land needs to yield astounding amounts of produce, provided that the lush, unwanted vegetation and the overwhelming populations of damaging insects could be controlled. With no dormant season to reduce insect numbers, a constant struggle exists between planter and bugs. In the early 1950s the improved airplane service fought the battle of the bugs. A typical operation of this sort was whimsically called “Sayasa Vanflober,” combining the names of its three owners, Sefiores Vanegas, Flores, and Bermudez. Literally translated, the word “Sayasa” means “Air and Agricultural Service.” Into this setting, near the fairly large city of Managua,

American duster pilots swarmed. Sayasa Vanflober had acquired an impressive fleet of Stearmans and Piper PA-18s, all equipped for straight dusting. Liquid spraying had not been initiated in the region. The Nicaraguan cotton growing season fit nicely into the working schedule of most U.S. pilots, beginning around September 15 or October I, when most stateside pilots were winding up their seasons. As a result, most pilots who traveled to Nicaragua hailed from traditional cotton country such as the Mississippi-Arkansas-Louisiana Delta, and Texas, clear into the Rio Grande Valley. Towns like Harlingen, Texas, became “staging areas” for these Central American operations and pilots would gather there and swoop down on Nicaragua as a group. Several Mississippi pilots, including Lee Corviss, Chuck Thresto, and Sid Norwood regularly migrated to Central

America wrapping up their work in the Delta area by October I. “It was quite a set-up,” reminisces Lee Corviss. “The tremendous cotton fields were hacked out of the jungle by hand. It wasn’t all level land either. Lots of those big fields followed the contours of hills and mountains and some were so steep that flying them was a real problem. A supercub, or even a Stearman, just couldn’t work them in the conventional manner. The uphill climb was just too steep. “We had to figure out ways to ‘racetrack’ lots of those fields and, during the course of that operation, a good many planes were wiped out and some really good pilots were injured or killed. Actually, it was pretty remarkable that we didn’t have more trouble. But when you are working that kind of country, most pilots learn to take extra special care of the old bird, so we got by pretty well after all.

“Satellite operations were scattered all over the country,” continued Corviss. More or less permanent strips were set up near the towns of Leone, Chinandega, and Rivas. “Also, lots of the big farms had their own strips. One of the biggest problems we had was finding the strip we were to work from! Ferrying into these strips was pretty hairy, with nothing under you except mountains and jungle. I used to sit up there and wonder to myself just what I’d do if I had to put that old Stearman down in all of those trees when the next clearing might 20 miles away!”

God Knows All of Our Motives, Thoughts, Words and Actions

God has inside information; He knows the future of His entire universe and every person and everything in it.

B 26 | agairupdate.com

Some humans think that they can hide all their ungodly motives, thoughts, words, and actions from God, but that’s foolishness. “For the Lord searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought” (1 Chronicles 28:9). “You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely” (Psalm 139:2-4). “Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the Lord, how much more the hearts of men! (Proverbs 15:11). “Am I a God who is near,” declares the Lord, “And not a God far off? “Can a man hide himself in hiding places so I do not see him?” declares the Lord. “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” declares the Lord” (Jeremiah 23:23-24). “For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things which have not been done, Saying, ‘My purpose will be established, and I will accomplish all My good pleasure” (Isaiah 46:9-10). God is in absolute control of the future of His earth, nothing happens that God doesn’t allow. Jesus’ crucifixion was according to the determined purpose and for knowledge of God (Acts 2:22-23). Isaiah wrote, “God says of Cyrus, ‘He is my shepherd and will accomplish all that I please… “Thus says the Lord to Cyrus His anointed, whom I have taken by the right hand, to subdue nations before him and to loose the loins of kings; To open doors before him so that gates will not be shut: “I will go before you and make the rough places smooth; I will shatter the doors of bronze and cut through their iron bars. “I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden wealth of secret

places” (Isaiah 44:28, 45:1-3). Isaiah wrote this over 100 years before Cyrus was born! The events mentioned above happened on the night that Belshazzar’s had an ungodly feast and desecrated the instruments that were used to worship God (Daniel chapter 5). The Persian army, using a basin dug earlier by the Babylonians to protect Babylon against Median attacks, diverted the Euphrates river into this basin so that the water level dropped “to the height of the middle of a man’s thigh,” which allowed the invading forces to march directly through the river bed and under the iron gates to enter Babylon at night. The Persian army entered and conquered the city of Babylon, killed Belshazzar, and took control of all Babylon’s treasures in October of 539 BC, about 173 years after Isaiah’s prophecy. Jesus said to the Pharisees, “You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts” (Luke 16:15). “Jesus did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person” (John 2:25). Jesus said, “I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken” (Matthew 12:36). God’s Spirit dwells in every part of His universe and He knows everything about every human that’s ever lived on this earth. If I told you that I know who the next 10 winners of the Texas State Lottery are going to be you’d say, “Come on Carlin, there’s no way you can do that unless it’s rigged.” And you’d be right, because the odds of doing that would be beyond the realm of chance. I would have to have some type of inside information. That’s the way prophecy is, God has inside information; He knows the future of His entire universe and every person

and everything in it. There are hundreds of prophecies in the Old Testament that refer to the first coming of (Jesus Christ) the Messiah. Many of these refer to His birth, life, death and resurrection. These prophecies were written during an 1100-year period that ended 400 years before Jesus was born in Bethlehem. If you consider the odds of Jesus fulfilling just 17 of these prophecies during His life on this earth the odds are staggering. The Old Testament says that the Messiah (Jesus Christ) would be born in Bethlehem and from the tribe of Judah; that a messenger (John the Baptist) would precede the Messiah and He would enter Jerusalem on a donkey. That He would be betrayed by a friend (Judas Iscariot) for thirty pieces of silver and the money would be spent to buy a potter’s field. Jesus would be silent before His accusers, His enemies would wound him, He would be spit upon and beaten and His hands and feet would be pierced. He would be crucified with thieves, His side would be pierced but none of His bones would be broken and they would gamble for His garments. Darkness would cover the earth, He would be buried in a rich man’s tomb and His body would not decay. The chance factor of one man fulfilling all of these 17 prophecies is 1 chance in 480,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000. Or 480 billion x 1 billion x 1 trillion to one that one man could fulfill these 17 prophecies. If we included all of the other prophecies Jesus fulfilled it would be totally absurd that anyone could have fulfilled all of them by shear chance. Faced with these kinds of odds, how can anyone deny that Jesus is not who the Bible says He is; the Son of God and the Savior of all who put their faith in Him. Are you willing to bet your eternal life against these kinds of odds? We’re all guilty before God of committing sins in our life. But God says He’ll give us His righteousness if we’ll trust in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior (2 Corinthians 5:21). Why not trust Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? The apostle Paul wrote, “That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). Jesus really does love you; He proved it by dying on the Cross for the sins of this world (John 1:29). It’s your choice!

HANDS ON FLYING

Tracy Thurman thurmantracyt@gmail.com

Staying Sharp

A lot that can happen with a spray plane or helicopter flying six to ten feet off the ground.

B 28 | agairupdate.com

Every profession has a skillset. Whether you’re a doctor, garbage man, basketball player or agpilot. These are skills we work hard to attain, strive to enhance and endeavor to preserve. As you work your way up, you never stop learning. The day you think you’ve learned it all is the day you need to hang up your helmet. Your skill level is yours and yours alone. No one can do anything with it but you. You can let it corrode or keep it shined up and sharp. You can grow or stagnate. One thing for sure, whatever you do, it will eventually show; one way or another. Hopefully the result won’t be as drastic as having anything to do with sad singing and slow walking. On the other hand, you can always spot a guy who’s got his guns clean and sighted in. He’s efficient, safe and ready. Not to mention, he’s usually in a better mood. Complacency can sneak up on the best of us. Rust builds up quickly in the slow season. Barnacles grow in the off season. The first few hours back in the seat require extra attention and the need to take more time. It doesn’t matter how many years you’ve been at it, if you’re out of practice, you’re behind the power curve before you even start. Give yourself a break and take it easy, at least until you’ve got your back pockets welded to the seat again. A ton of hours and a lifetime of seasons won’t do anything to improve the stall characteristics of your aircraft. Your effective swath width isn’t going to change and the chemical will drift just as much as it would at any other time. It’s not only the off season that affects us, the redundancy of day to day (or night to night) operations can lull a pilot into a rut where he’s flying and functioning simply by rote. We’ve all experienced that at one time or another. Especially

when the season gets long in the tooth and we’re getting worn and weary. It’s something we need to always watch out for and guard against. It’s important for ag-pilots to familiarize themselves with the new chemistries that are always emerging, as well staying current on the ones we already use. Most of us spent at least a few years mixing chemicals and dragging the load hose. Once you’ve gotten in the seat, however, it doesn’t mean you don’t have to worry about what goes on with the mix rig anymore. On the contrary. As the PIC, it’s your tail feathers on the line if you spray the wrong stuff. You’ll also be the guy flailing around the sky with a gummed up spray system, if the mix procedure wasn’t done correctly. Be aware of everything that goes in the airplane and everything that comes out. When it does, where it does and how it does it. Mistakes are costly. Excuses are pointless.

A pilot needs to be well versed in emergency procedures in all aspects of the operation. You’ll recall, your flight instructor probably told you to always look for an out. In this job, it takes on more meaning. There’s a lot that can happen with a spray plane or helicopter flying six to ten feet off the ground. A pilot needs to be well versed in emergency procedures in all aspects of the operation. The ground crew needs to be trained as well. What will they do if there’s a large chemical or fuel spill? An incapacitated

you’re likely going to have plenty of other things on your mind. The same applies to landing with a load. If you haven’t had to do it, just wait. You will. Again, be familiar with the way your airplane behaves in that situation. Does the airplane tend to drop the tail on final? Does it drop the nose? What’s your best “loaded” approach and landing speed? Are the baffles installed properly in your hopper? If they’re not, you’ll find out quick. At just the wrong time. These are things a smart pilot will work himself up to. A hundred or so gallons at a time. Don’t wait until you need those skills to try to attain them. Staying sharp is what professionals do. We’ve each spent too much time, sweat and effort into getting where we are to allow our skills to become dull. There is always room for improvement, there is always something new to learn or some way to do what we do even better. It’s part of the ongoing challenge. Be a great ag-pilot, then strive to be a better one. And, stay in a good mood… Fly Well, and Stay Safe!

crew member? What if the airplane rolls away while the pilot is away from it? Are they trained to respond correctly in case of a fire? Do they know where the emergency shut off valves are? Are the valves themselves in good working order? Training is valuable. The time spent making sure everyone involved is knowledgeable and prepared is a small investment that could pay huge dividends if things go bad. And, we all know when they do, they do it in a hurry. If you’re flying a different airplane, even if it’s the same type, burn a little fuel exploring that particular aircraft’s stall tendencies. Every bird has its own personality. It is in the pilot’s best interests to familiarize himself with the handling characteristics that are unique to the aircraft he is flying. A heavily loaded, downwind turn is no place to discover a wing drop or C.G. issue. Trust me on that one Make sure you practice things like jettisoning a load. No ag-pilot should ever embark on a season without making sure he is familiar with the safe and proper way to dump the hopper if he needs to. If you find yourself in that sort of situation,

IN MY OPINION

Robert McCurdy bluemaxs2rt@gmail.com “Ag-Pilot Instructor — Retired”

Drifting Into Trouble

Moral of the story, and I emphasized this to my ag aviation students, a nowind condition is a very insidious danger.

B 32 | agairupdate.com

During the early ‘90s, I was flying an AT-401 out of Swan Lake, Mississippi. We got a call one morning from one of our rice farmers to Stam a 90-acre rice field. I checked the maps and identified the field to be sprayed. The field was bordered on the west and east by other rice fields belonging to this same farmer and to the south by a “lay-out” field which really was only used for duck hunting when it would be flooded later in the year. To the north was a small scope of woods, maybe 25 yards deep. Lengthwise, it extended beyond both boundaries of the rice field to be treated with Stam, but immediately on the other side of the woods was a large field with a cotton stand of about three inches in height. Naturally, the cotton belonged to another farmer and was not one of our regular customers. The DTN indicated the wind to be light and variable and our windsock was hanging like a wet dish rag. Calm winds have always made me a little nervous when doing herbicide work. After ordering the material, figuring the loads and working up the strategy for the job, we determined it would be better to do the fly from our base, approximately ten miles from the job site. I called the farmer and told him I was a little concerned about the wind, or lack thereof. I would have liked to have had a gentle breeze out of anywhere, as long as it had some northerly component. The farmer expressed that it was near critical that the job be done asap. I needed the farmer’s assistance and we discussed the coordination strategy. I would lay a line of smoke from east to west along the north edge of the rice to be sprayed. The farmer assured me he would be at the north end of the rice field watching the wind and if it appeared that the smoke was moving towards the woods, he would wave me off and the application would be

terminated. I told him I intended to leave a 100foot buffer between my cut off point and the tree line and that I would be back to spray the buffer as soon as we had a northernly wind. I took all the standard precautions, using only about 22 psi boom pressure and adding a drift control agent to the mixture. Everything went, “According to Hoyle.”

FAR 91.3(a) and 137.39(2) clearly state, “the pilot in command is directly responsible for and is the final authority” After mixing the first load and flying north to the destination rice field, I observed the farmer in position. I laid a line of smoke across the north border of the rice field, pulled up and saw that it was not moving. The farmer gave me the OK signal and I laid down the first pass of the east perimeter, flying north and cutting the spray off before beginning the pull-up with at least a 100foot buffer. The farmer observed the pass and signaled again that everything was a “go.” I made several more passes, releasing a puff of smoke on each pull up and watching the farmer for any signals. After about five or six passes, for some reason I decided to make another east-west run along the north boundary with a line of smoke and sure enough it was slowly moving into the trees. I quit spraying, but it was too late now. I damaged about 28 acres of cotton, as I remember. The farmer told me later that it had looked like all the material was settling before it got to the trees and

that’s why he never waved me off. Thank God, at least I had left the buffer. Moral of the story, and I emphasized this to my ag aviation students, a no-wind condition is a very insidious danger. When flying a herbicide job, a calm wind along with the insistence of the farmer and pressure from the operator and yourself will lull you into trouble. We know in most cases, the farmer for whom you are working, legally speaking, is jointly responsible for any drift damage. So what? What’s that got to do with the fact that you just did something for which only you will be held responsible. FAR 91.3(a) and 137.39(2) clearly state, “the pilot in command is directly responsible for and is the final authority”, etc. Furthermore, if the material moves where it is not supposed to go, then you’re in violation of the label. That’s it. There is nothing left to say. It’s a situation we have to live with and adapt to. However, we still have a choice. Pay attention to your gut feelings. When we hear that quiet, little voice from time to time that says, “Don’t do it.”, we have to learn to listen to it and say, “No, I’m sorry, but I can’t do this job right now.”

B 34 | agairupdate.com

The problem with this situation is there may be another pilot in the same operation, who will do the job, or maybe the farmer will get a pilot from another operator to do the work and in all probability there won’t be a drift claim when the other pilot does the job. Maybe this will adversely affect your credibility. It will certainly adversely affect your pocketbook! All you, as a competent and conscientious agpilot, can do is make your decisions based on the information you have at the time. In retrospect, I wish I had said something like, “Let’s wait for a little while and see which way the wind starts blowing, because it’s going to start moving in some direction before too long.” Hopefully, you are a competent and conscientious ag-pilot. If your customers have been pleased with your work thus far, they shouldn’t leave you. If they do, then maybe it’s for the best. In the long run, they will be faced again with a similar situation. They will surely try to coerce another pilot into flying when that pilot’s gut feelings tells him otherwise. This time the other pilot may not be so lucky.

PRESS RELEASE

Thrush Aircraft Records Strong First Quarter of 2020 Significant growth in both staffing and orders get the year off to a solid start. Under its new leadership team, Thrush Aircraft reported a very strong first quarter to kick-off the new year.

A 30 | agairupdate.com

(Albany, Georgia) Despite the recent impact of COVID-19 on virtually every facet of life at the present time, the new leadership team at Thrush Aircraft recorded a very strong first quarter as the first three months of the new year drew to a close. In addition, Thrush added additional staffing and capabilities during this time to support further growth in the year ahead “Naturally, our first thoughts are with our teammates here at our factory, our community in Albany, and the entire agricultural industry, as we all deal with the COVID-19 situation

together,” said Mark McDonald, chief executive officer of Thrush Aircraft. “And in light of recent events related to the crisis, this bit of good news seemed very much worth sharing, as I believe all of us could use a bright spot right about now,” he continued. As the first quarter of the new year comes to an end, Thrush has more than doubled the number of team members in production services at the factory – while adding some critical new hires on the sales and support sides as well. These include: Mike Rutledge as Director of Sales for North America, Bryan Amador as Sales Representative for Central America, Steve Jocelyn as Vice President of Manufacturing, and Sherrie Wallace

as Sales Administrator. In addition, Kevin Pierce has been promoted to Director of Services and is now overseeing a new customer support team that will transform the way Thrush supports its customers in the field, while Manager of Flight Operations, Terry Humphrey, continues to lead the company’s flight department. The company has also tripled the size of its engineering department which will greatly enhance updates and certification capabilities. “Doubling employment levels here at Thrush was a goal from the very start,” said Mr. McDonald. “And, thanks to a strong order book, we were able to do so quite quickly,” he added. The company’s 2020 order book so far includes some 17 aircraft for both spray and firefighting operations, including Thrush 510Ps, 510Gs and 710Ps destined for customers in the United States, Canada and overseas. Several of these aircraft are expected to be delivered over the next 30 days. “Despite the challenges every new organization experiences, our sales, support and production teams here in Albany and around the world have more than risen to the occasion and I could not be more proud of all they’ve accomplished – nor more excited about all that is to come,” said Mr. McDonald. “Our immediate challenge of course is the current COVID-19 crisis. But I’m convinced we have the right people and the right mind-set to deal with the challenge and to help others do so as well. Working together, all of us as a nation and as global population will prevail,” he concluded.

With change, comes opportunity. There have been changes at Thrush. Big changes. New ownership. New leadership. And a new commitment to become a better company. One deserving of your trust, and your business. And now with the resources and skills to earn them both. You’ve told us what needs to be fixed – and we’re doing just that. Exceptional quality. Unequaled product support. Promises that will be kept. It’s an entirely new day at this legendary company. And we deeply appreciate having the opportunity to prove it. For more information about all the changes now underway at Thrush and the new opportunities we’re creating for our customers’ success, call Mark McDonald at 229.789.0467.
