FROM THE COCKPIT

Bill Lavender bill@agairupdate.com

At Night with a Satloc I had an AgAir Update reader email me about an article he had “dug” up from 1994. Gee, that was 27 years ago! I finally found the article stored away in the archives. It brought back many memories. In the article, I visited Custom Farm Service in Arizona to attend a Satloc training session. In addition to the school, I had the pleasure of a night spraying ride in a dual-cockpit Thrush piloted by the founder and inventor of Satloc GPS, John Goodwin. I had operated a turbine Thrush 14 years earlier. My Thrush happened to have night-working lights, but I never really used them. An exception was returning from a late evening load and landing with them, maybe even making the last few passes with them beaming. On one occasion, I flew frost patrol overseed peaches with the Thrush in the wee early morning before daylight. I would not call that flight qualifying me as a night ag pilot since I was literally turning over my house only a couple of hundred yards from my airstrip. I had a good idea of what to expect during that flight with John, except for one thing; a Satloc unit guided his Thrush. Also, I was unaware of the many perils that could be encountered while night flying, from invisible Arizona dust storms to hidden wires that appeared from seemingly nowhere.

A 6 | agairupdate.com

From that barebones Satloc GPS unit, the GPSguided ag-aviation industry has come a long way. In 1994, hardly any ag-aircraft used GPS. Today, it would be a rare find for an ag-plane not to have one installed in its cockpit. In the years before the 1990s, freehand swaths were commonplace. Now, I dare say that the ag-plane is virtually grounded when the GPS unit fails. Instead of a basic swath guidance device of the early model Satlocs, in 2022, the units have become highly sophisticated. Swath guidance is only the basis of the machine. Its capabilities possibly have expanded beyond John Goodwin’s wildest dreams. But maybe not; John is a pretty smart fellow. As I finish this editorial, I am in a hotel room for the Mississippi convention. Last week I attended the Louisiana convention in Lake Charles. Graham and I were scheduled to attend the Texas and Arkansas conventions, but lousy luck prevailed, and numerous circumstances caused us to miss these two shows. Maybe our luck will improve for the remaining upcoming conventions. We hope to see ya there! Until next month, Keep Turning…

Niels Andrews This is Russ Keller formerly of Trimble Navigation and Trimflight. One of my longtime friends and mentors, Niels Andrews has passed away suddenly. Niels was the owner of a Helicair, a helicopter ag service in Salinas Valley CA, and good friends with stunt pilot Sean Tucker, who flew for Oracle. He attended many ag shows and was head of the HAI back in the 90s. Niels did many Gypsy moth campaigns and was on the spray drift task force. Thanks, Bill, Russ Keller Russ; Thank you for letting me know about Niels. I hadn’t heard. Niels and I were friends in the mid-90s, although I hadn’t heard from him in many years. He was responsible for the formation of the NAAA’s PAASS program, which since has saved many ag-pilots’ lives. He was a really great guy. I regret not having been able to talk with him. May he rest in peace.—Bill

Flap Extensions Good article flap extension. I just need to add a little extra if I may with my 350,000 odd max load take-offs, all reasonably successful. First, anything with electric flaps or toggle switches must be set and observed before advancing power to eliminate a malfunction plus toggle switches take too long and are a distraction. All checks and settings must be in place before advancing the power lever, then all you need to do is sit there, look out and monitor. If trim is correctly set and all actions and conditions are the same no ASI is

A 10 | agairupdate.com

necessary as the stick position and weight on it will by feel tell you if you are going to fly or not by half to two thirds your takeoff roll (all aircraft get some feel about 1 half to two thirds into roll). If no feel at this decision point you do something. Your dump hand must be resting on the dump lever by mid-take-off with you sitting there just monitoring and looking out. Until you can understand this procedure keep your loads way within your boundaries. There is no substitute for time in the seat. Obviously, this loaded t/off takes a book to explain but when you put your flaps down not only do you change the flow over the wing but you shift the flow over the tail. (this needs thinking about but flight is all about keeping clean airflow over the wings and tail and a pilot should be thinking about this). With the Air Tractor definitely set flap before advancing power, PAC 750 has a toggle / hydraulic so always set flap before T/off. The Beaver is interesting, 10 degrees set at the loader so will fly anyway if no more flap applied and some load released, at about 40 knots (trim set correctly) two pumps on the wobble pump gives 20 degrees and the tail should just come off the ground, if it doesn’t a little forward push with the thumb should raise the tail, if it doesn’t start dumping with 150 meters to go, or if the tail is just up and you go to ease back off the ground and the tail sinks back it is time to dump. Just keep your loads light until you know your aircraft and you can remain totally relaxed and know what is going on. This is very simplified but may be of help to someone.

Haven’t seen you since Dead Cow saddle at Twizel. Andy New Zealand G’Day Andy Well, it’s been a couple of decades since I was in the beautiful land of Dead Cow Saddle (Twizel)! I do remember leaving a pair of shoes at a very nice hotel somewhere in the heart of the South Island! Take care—Bill

Brazil Visit Had a wonderful trip to Brazil, it’s always great to see the family there and hard to leave! My daughter found an operator near Curitiba but we never did meet up since they were too busy flying to shut down for a visit. Must be summertime there! On our drive north to Cuiaba, Matto Grosso we stopped at AWA in Campo Verde-MT and visited for a bit with Adriana, all the airplanes were out flying at a remote strip so we just checked out their maintenance shop. Sounds like they have the same issues to deal with as we do here just that the pilot can be thrown in jail if he does something off label! It was cool to see emu’s out in the soybean fields! Tchau! Craig Ola Craig; Thank you for your email. It is good to know your visit to Brazil was good. I’ve visited AWA in the past, along with many other Brazilian operators. It is always enlightening to see the differences, as well as the similarities. Take care,—Bill

A TEXAS “HUMP“ PILOT BUILDS AN AVIATION LEGACY NEAL AIRCRAFT - 75 YEARS IN AVIATION

by Nancy Andersen In 1945 Roy Neal joined the U. S. Army Air Corps 4th Ferry Group flying 48 missions in the China-Burma-India theatre during April15, 1945 - July 18,1945. Roy had been chasing his dreams of aviation and now he was flying on a daily basis in an aircraft that was not built to fly the missions he was carrying out, flying supplies at an altitude unheard of for a C-47. Neal Aircraft has proudly been serving the aviation industry for 75 years. Family patriarch, Roy Neal began working in aviation on January 1, 1946, in the city of Lubbock, Texas as a Piper dealer for the West Texas region – Wes-Tex Aircraft. A 12 | agairupdate.com

THE FORMATIVE YEARS Roy Neal was born in Philadelphia on March 1917, as a young child his family moved to Plainview, Texas. He was a young man who was always seeking adventure and was curious by nature. At a young age he began building his legacy. Rumor has it that when he graduated from Plainview High in 1923 the sheriff was kindly awaiting him for a personal escort; as he walked across the stage from receiving his diploma and officially graduating from Plainview High, the sheriff escorted him out of town, telling him “now that you have completed your education it would be best if you left town.” To this day, the family keeps that secret tucked away in a vault.

INTERNATIONAL

Heeding that advice, Roy and his good friend decided to head for the sun and fun of Florida. His friend, having family in Florida, hitchhiked across the southern part of the U.S. with a log of bologna to eat on the trip. They decided to grab a bus the last few miles to Miami. After all, they didn’t want to look like a bunch of vagabonds. It would look much better if they called his friend’s aunt to pick them up from the bus stop. They were fortunate enough to quickly find work on a banana boat. Always an adventure seeker, this job fulfilled their desire to travel and provided them money for their daily needs. The boat disembarked from Miami and sailed to Cuba, there they loaded the boat with bananas and brought them to Miami. Roy was able to make three, of these two week long trips before he decided he was homesick and it was time to come back to Texas. Realizing the importance of furthering his education, he enrolled at Texas Tech University, where he met his lovely bride Emma Nell Thatcher. They married in 1936, she continued her work at the Texas Tech bookstore while he attended school. World War II had begun; but, the U.S. was not yet engaged in the fight. Soon after they were married, the U.S. entered the War joining forces with its allies against the Nazis. Roy felt the urge to join having just completed his private pilot’s license. In 1942 he became a pilot in the U.S. Army. His first job was as a civilian flight instructor, flying almost daily from 1942-1943.

THE CHINA-BURMA THEATRE As the U.S. became more engaged in the War, Roy was selected to fly in the China-Burma-India Theatre, becoming what were known as “Hump Pilots”. Aircrews flew C-46’s, C-47’s and other aircraft over “The Hump”, the nickname the pilots gave the airlift operation that crossed the Himalayan foothills into China. It was the Army Air Force’s most dangerous airlift route, it was the only way to supply Chinese forces fighting Japan. When the United States started running supplies to the Chinese forces fighting Japan, the Western part of the country was firmly controlled by the invading Japanese. The Japanese also controlled Burma, on India’s Eastern border, cutting off the last land route to the Chinese. Supplies would have to come by air and American planes would have to come from the West — over the “Roof of the World.” Flying the Hump was incredibly dangerous. More than 1,000 men and 600 planes were lost over the 530-mile stretch of rugged terrain. I t was dubbed the “Skyway to Hell” and the “Aluminium Trail” for the number of planes that did not make it. The mountain ranges of the Himalayas caused jet stream - strength winds and dangerous weather at extreme altitudes. And when that does not kill you, a Japanese Zero will be there to try. Pilots traversing the route had to fly the Kali Gandaki River

Gorge, a depression much wider and deeper than the Grand Canyon. The mountains surrounding the gorge were 10,000 feet higher than most of the planes could fly. The pass to escape the gorge was 15,000 feet high — but pilots could not often see it. The “Hump” initially contained few en-route navigational aids. En-route communications were poor and air traffic control, except for local control towers, did not exist. Aeronautical charts were very unreliable and weather reporting was very poor. Pilots were issued fleece-lined jackets, boots, and gloves to keep their extremities from freezing during the flight. Lack of oxygen could cause pilots to veer off-course and into an almost certain death. C-46 cargo planes did not glide, their heavy engines causing an almost immediate dive. Roy flew C-46’s daily for the next 2 years, “The Hump” never closed. The war was over, Roy headed to Dallas to collect his wife and family. He brought them back to Lubbock to start agairupdate.com | A 13

INTERNATIONAL

their new lives. Roy and Emma Nell had three children. In Lubbock his passion for aviation continued and he set his sights on an aviation business. He pursued M.T. Dagley to buy his Piper dealership, they had an agreement that would allow Roy to buy him out. Roy lacked the funding to buy the dealership, he set out to find a bank that would lend him the money. He knocked on every banker’s door and was turned down. The bankers said, “there is no future in an aviation business”. This did not discourage him; it fueled his passion and determination that he would find a lender and be a success. Lubbock National Bank listened to his business plan and saw his vision; they agreed to lend him the money for the dealership. Roy Neal began Wes-Tex Aircraft in 1946 at the Lubbock Municipal Airport. There he started what would become the Neal family legacy in aviation. He sold new and used Piper airplanes, parts and service. At the airport he was a flight instructor, he rented planes and there was only one piece of the puzzle missing - no one in the area knew how to insure an airplane. The insurance companies came to Roy and convinced him he needed to set up his own insurance company. Roy who never viewed things as challenges only as A 14 | agairupdate.com

opportunities set out to become a licensed insurance agent. Thus began Roy Neal Insurance. Roy could teach you to fly, sell you a plane, annual it, rent you a hangar, and insure the plane - Roy may have coined the term one stop shopping.

ENTERING OF A NEW ERA Larry Neal; the middle child of Roy and Emma Nell, enjoyed his time working at the airport. At the young age of 10, he worked at the airport driving the fuel truck, cleaning the aircraft and learning all of the odds and ends at the airport. He would ride his bike from his home to the airport to fuel the jets flying into the Lubbock Municipal Airport. One day while he was standing on the wing of a plane fueling it, an individual called the FAA to advise them of a kid who was fueling the aircraft. The FAA quickly ended his career of fueling airplanes. In 1965, Larry entered college at Texas Tech University to pursue a degree in Engineering. He continued his studies while the Vietnam war was raging in the Asia Pacific region of the world. One day he was sitting in his very last exam that he was taking to complete his graduation from Texas Tech. He decided that his exam and his diploma were

INTERNATIONAL

inconsequential to what was going on in the world. He got up from his test and walked out of the classroom. He headed straight to the Army recruiter’s office across the street and enlisted in the summer of 1968. Once he completed the Army paperwork, he drove to the airport to tell his father the news of joining the Army. As Larry entered his father’s office, Roy was holding up his newspaper and reading the latest news. While Larry explained to his dad what he did, Roy never put down the paper and his only words to his son were, “are you going to tell your mom, or do you want me to?” Soon after, Larry was off to Vietnam where he worked in Air Traffic Control for the U.S. Army. He was stationed along the Cambodian border in the Tay Ninh province where for 13 months, they took incoming fire almost daily to the point that he usually slept under his cot more often than on it. After Vietnam, Larry enrolled in night classes at Troy state university while stationed at Ft. Rucker as the air traffic control supervisor. Once he was discharged from the Army, Larry re-enrolled at Texas Tech in 1972 and returned to work for his

father at WesTex Aircraft. While he was there he met a beautiful, tall, leggy Texas girl full of moxie named Melanie. He was quite smitten by her and they married in 1975, shortly after he had graduated from TTU in Spring 1974. While working at WesTex in accounting, he also spent time flying new planes from Lockhaven, Pennsylvania, Vero Beach, Florida and delivering planes all over the US, Mexico and even to Iceland. Piper soon merged with Textron. The corporate decision was made to eliminate dealers and sell directly to the customers. During that time one of Larry’s customers told him about Leland Snow, who needed dealers in the northern Texas area. The customer arranged for a meeting between Leland and Larry; there was born the relationship between the Neals and the Snow family.

SLATON AIRPORT SEEKS NEW FBO MANAGER Neal Aircraft began selling Air Tractors in 1986, and that same year the city manager and mayor asked Larry to move to Slaton. The Lubbock FAA tower was preparing to take the ability to clear

non comm aircraft. At that time there were many ag planes that did not have radios. After some thought Larry came back with a two page list of things the City of Slaton needed to get done before he would move. The Slaton Municipal Airport worked better for flying agricultural aircraft where the airspace was not as restricted as the Lubbock International Airport, which had grown dramatically with the addition of airlines and many cargo carriers. As Larry managed the airport, also an Air Tractor dealer; he was also raising a family and growing the airport.

Roy Neal began WesTex Aircraft in1946 at the Lubbock Municipal Airport. There he started what would become the Neal family legacy in aviation. He sold new and used Piper airplanes, parts and service. The Slaton airport has a unique dynamic not seen at other municipal airports. I t currently has an aviation museum that has aircraft from WWI to current military aircraft, G-B Aerial (SEAT firefighting operation), Pro-Agri (ag aviation operators), Raider Aviation (aviation school/GA mechanic) and The FatTire Cowboys who fly the YAK-110 to air shows and let’s not forget Neal Aircraft (Air Tractor dealer), Sekon Aviation (aircraft turbine mechanic). In June 2019 the city of Slaton memorialized Larry T. Neal by renaming the airport after him, becoming the Larry T. Neal Memorial Airport (F49). The airport sign is now the very recognizable Air Tractor aircraft with the new renamed airport.

A 16 | agairupdate.com

LOOKING FORWARD Robert Neal now carries on the family legacy of aviation; you can find Robert stepping into the big shoes that his father and grandfather have left him. He has grown into them quite well. Robert and his wife Cory are busy parents of 4 beautiful children ages 4-13. Cory is a true Texas woman, full of energy, fierceness and cuteness. She has the family running in precision - on schedule, on time and while she works for a real estate team of 5 agents in Lubbock. After graduating from Texas A&M and from the prestigious Texas A&M Corp of Cadets, Larry spoke to Robert about the family business and decided to not push it, to just let things fall into place. Robert chose to not enter the family business and make his mark in the pharmaceutical industry. He and Cory were living in San Antonio and Boerne pursuing their careers. As he climbed the corporate ladder and traveled more for work, they were starting their family. They decided it was time to be near family, so the children could enjoy their grandparents. Robert decided it would be nice to have the time to learn and work alongside his father. Now you can find Robert behind an aircraft talking business with customers. “This airplane just goes.” That’s the sentiment expressed by long-time Thrush pilot and 510 BEAST operator Tracy Stokes. Although the weather wasn’t cooperating for AgAir Update’s planned evaluation flight of Cascade Aircraft Conversions BEAST, a PT6A-140AG conversion nested inside their proven pressure cowl, Tracy was able to demo the aircraft and sit down with Mid-Continent Aircraft and Cascade Aircraft Conversion team to tell the story of how the monster of an airplane came to be. The idea was born from a recognized gap, about four years ago, in the market between the PT6A-34 powered and -60 powered 500-gallon Thrush. Instead of initiating a more complex Type Certification on Thrush, Pratt & Whitney Canada suggested an STC Firewall forward kit using the PT6A-140AG turbine engine for the Thrush 510. Pratt & Whitney supplied a project PT6-140AG boasting an 867 SHP engine to Cascade Aircraft Conversions, which possessed a successful history completing firewall-forward STCs. Pratt & Whitney also predicted the additional value of conversion using the -140AG engine for both the 510P and 510G model

aircraft in conjunction with Cascade Aircraft’s extremely effective pressure cowl. The Pratt & Whitney/Cascade Aircraft Conversion partnership already had a proven track record with the PT6A-41/42 turbine conversion STC for the Air Tractor AT502/502B and the 500-gallon Thrush. The discussion about installing this PT6A-140AG engine on the 510P/G model aircraft opened up a meeting with Mid-Continent Aircraft. They agreed to provide a 510P airframe and the necessary flight testing for the project to complete the STC certification. Mid-Continent Aircraft delivered the 510P to Cascade Aircraft Conversions in September 2018. Cascade built up the prototype firewall forward kit and test flew the project aircraft in November 2018. Cascade Aircraft Conversion’s 867 SHP PT6A-140AG powered Thrush made its first appearance at the Ag Aviation Expo in Reno, NV in December 2018. Following this appearance at the Ag Aviation Expo in Reno, the PT6A-34 was reinstalled on this aircraft so that Mid-Continent could work the aircraft in the summer of 2019.

The Mid-Continent and Cascade Aircraft Conversions Team.

Cascade Aircraft Conversions took time without the aircraft to refine the installation with an updated plenum and air filter design, a boost start system, sealed batteries and a redesigned engine mount. When the Thrush 510P returned to Cascade Aircraft Conversions in September 2019, they installed the updated firewall forward and additional testing was completed. The updated firewall-forward PT6A-140AG kit arrived at the Ag Aviation Expo in 2019 and the “BEAST” conversion was displayed. Also in 2019, Randy Sandstrom at Prairie Dusters in Canada provided a GE H80-powered 510G for the STC project. This enabled Cascade Aircraft Conversions to dual-track the STC certification for the 510P and 510G airframes. The “BEAST” STC firewall-forward conversion kit utilizes the PT6A-140AG turbine producing 867 SHP up to 111? OAT in conjunction with Cascade Aircraft Conversions’ Pressure Cowl that delivers the industry’s greatest volume of clean air to the turbine. Conversion time runs about 60 days; however, the kit is designed to be shipped anywhere. This powerful integration combined

A 22 | agairupdate.com

with the Boost Start System and aerodynamic improvements delivers a winning combination. The Cascade Pressure Cowl testing administered by Pratt & Whitney Canada compared the factory air inlet with the Cascade Pressure Cowl on a Thrush 510P. The Cascade Pressure Cowl delivers a reduction in ITT temps of 32? C, a reduction in NG of 1.7%, and a minimum available HP increase of 6%. When checking the air available to the turbine engine with a manometer on the factory air inlet system, the instrument shows a negative pressure (or vacuum) of minus five to seven inches of water-column of air. The same manometer test with the Cascade Pressure Cowl installed shows a positive pressure of plus 11-12 inches of water-column of air. The increased air availability delivered to the turbine engine and reduction in ITT temps dramatically increases the longevity of the heat-critical parts in the turbine. Tracy Stokes from Arkansas, reports an increase of 10-12 knots on the typical ferry from the field.

The successful 20-year history of the Cascade Aircraft Conversion Pressure Cowl installation on several agricultural aircraft models that force positive pressure and clean air to the turbine engine proves the huge long-term benefit of the Cascade Pressure Cowl addition to the PT6-140AG BEAST kit for the Thrush 510P and 510G models. The design also provides easy maintenance access to fuel nozzles, front chip detector and the air filtration system. Once the side engine cowling is off the aircraft, the air filtration system can be removed in less than two minutes for service. The filter media used in the system is long-lasting and serviceable. The combination of the Cascade Aircraft Conversions Boost Start System and the Pressure Cowl is a 1-2 punch for setting up the operator’s workhorse for the lowest possible long-term maintenance costs while maintaining profitable peak performance. provides more thrust along with significant noise reduction and no harmonic-resonance issues throughout its operating range. Randy Sandstrom reported that after two years of extensive testing on rough airfields, including some with lots of rocks and gravel, his Avia prop looks nearly like it did when brand new - no rock chips or missing paint. The Avia prop design puts out the thrust while avoiding sucking up FOD. This durable propeller is easy to ship and install as the blades and hub ship in separate boxes. “The BEAST truly makes the 510 Thrush a 500-gallon airplane any day, and all day” Randy Sandstrom. During flight testing, several aerodynamic modifications were developed for the aircraft. These mods include ventral fins and horizontal stabilizer fairings. The safety and performance benefits of these additions to the aircraft include a more effective horizontal stabilizer, increased maneuverability and improved lateral stability. The FAA certified Cascade Aircraft Conversions’ PT6A-140AG STC conversion kit for the Thrush 510P and 510G model aircraft in September 2021. Cascade Aircraft Conversions says it’s time to “unleash the BEAST” in your operation for increased production and profits.

CRAYMER’S COUNSEL

Robert Craymer - robertc@covingtonaircraft.com

Cycle Tracking

In 2021, we celebrated the 100th year of agricultural aviation, and I celebrated my 25th year with Covington Aircraft. Many achievements in life are marked by time. “Let every man be master of his time.” -William Shakespeare. Many of you are wondering, Craymer, how are you going to talk about engine maintenance with an opening paragraph about time? Engine maintenance time is tracked by hours, cycles and life-limited components. It used to be that everything was monitored off cycles; however, hours are starting to become as much a part of time tracking now as cycles have been. Turbine blade maintenance is now being tracked using hours. For some models like the PT6A65AG, the compressor turbine blades have an inspection that must be done at 3000 hours. Pratt & Whitney Canada calls this inspection a “Creep Check.” The “Creep Check” removes the compressor turbine, a.k.a. CT blades, and checks their growth. This is an inspection that must be done at an engine shop. Your on-wing mechanic will not have all the tooling for blade removal, inspection, installation, and balance. Be advised that this could also result in the shroud segments’ replacement. A 28 | agairupdate.com

Another blade maintenance item can be found on the PT6A-67AG. The replacement of the 2nd stage power turbine blades is recommended by 5000 hours. Don’t be deceived by the word recommended, the replacement of the power turbine blades at 5000 hours is crucial. We have seen several engines that were more than the 5000-hour time frame, and the blades have liberated. Pratt & Whitney Canada has expressed that they can use the term required only in the issuance of an AD, recommended is the strongest language that can be used without an AD. Be advised there are some commercial support programs to help owners/operators of PT6A67AG engines with the cost of the blade replacement. One can only take advantage of commercial support programs while the programs are still active and through Pratt & Whitney Canada’s family of approved shops, including Covington Aircraft. As more maintenance is being dictated by hours, you can see the tracking of hours is becoming more and more critical to engine maintenance. Cycle tracking, on the other hand, has always been important. To clarify, a cycle is defined as a start, a flight, a landing and a shutdown. In

agricultural aviation use, we don’t typically utilize the engine and airplane in this manner. One may start the engine once or twice a day and do as many flights as your customers’ applications call for. PWC understands this utilization and has provided us with a means for determining cycle counts using starts and flights. A common question has been asked: Can one determine starts and flights based solely on hours? The answer is no. The owner/operator is responsible for tracking starts and flights and providing those to your maintenance provider or engine shop. Thankfully tools are being introduced to make this a more straightforward process. We have evolved from the days of clicker counters in the cockpit to things like the MVP-50T that can track starts and flights. There are also some flight tracking and job tracking software options available. I encourage operators to talk to their vendors and suppliers for value-added tools and see if they already have or can add this tracking to their products. We know when a job is inputted that you know how many loads that job will take; therefore, we know how many flights that job will be. Once the hours, starts and flights are provided we will be able to use the formula found in the appropriate service bulletin. For example, the PT6A-34AG formula is found in service bulletin 1302.

RECORD INTAKE OWNERS

Why is all this important? The engine contains several components that are life-limited. They must be replaced when a specific cycle limit has been reached. These components are the compressor rotors, the impeller and the turbine disks. When work is performed on your engine in the shop, the shop must verify that these limits have not been reached. If during a hot section inspection and cycles cannot be determined for the CT disk, replacement is the only option. It cannot be assumed that cycles remain on the disk or any life-limited component. If you must replace the CT disk on your engine, it would cost thousands of dollars. I am not trying to scare you, but I want to show you time tracking directly affects the operating cost of your engine. As we mark time in our personal and professional lives, make sure and consider that marking time on your engine is equally important. Track your hours. Track your starts. Track your flights. Tracking these will make the time you own/ operate your engine easier and cheaper. Be the master of your time. Please reach out to me at robertc@covingtonaircraft.com if you have any questions, and I’ll be glad to assist.

National Agricultural Aviation Association

Meet NAAA’s 2022 Leadership Team The National Agricultural Aviation Association is pleased to announce its 2022 officer team, led by NAAA President Jim Perrin. Serving alongside Perrin are Vice President Craig Craft, Secretary Ray Newcomb and Treasurer Darrel Mertens.

President Jim Perrin (Wisconsin) Jim Perrin is NAAA’s 2022 president. His company, Agricair Flying Service in Bancroft, Wisconsin, has 10 employees, including Jim and his wife, Julie. Jim is the chief supervisor and Julie manages the office and handles the logistics work with Agricair’s customers. The Perrins have two pilots besides Jim and six employees on the ground crew. Agricair Flying Service’s fleet of three aircraft treated over 200,000 acres of cropland in central Wisconsin last year, including potatoes, sweet corn, soybeans, peas, green beans, carrots and several smaller crops. The fleet includes two Thrush 510 aircraft with GE H80 turbine engines and a 400-gallon Thrush powered with a Garrett (Honeywell) TPE 331 turbine. Perrin ordered the new Thrush 510P2 powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-34 that he will substitute and fly for one of the 510G aircraft once it is delivered. Perrin has held every officer position within the Wisconsin Agricultural Aviation Association, was its board member to NAAA from 2013 to 2016 and continued to serve in other capacities after that. In nearly 10 years of service to NAAA, he has chaired the Insurance, Museum and Budget & Finance committees. He served as NAAA’s treasurer in 2017 and vice president last year. “Anybody that is doing this for a living should be involved with NAAA,” Perrin says, explaining why he actively contributes to his state and national associations. “The only one looking out for us is NAAA, whether it be related to the industry’s economic health or safety. I don’t understand why we don’t have 95% membership participation. At the end of the day, B 2 | agairupdate.com

there is one organization that keeps us safe and keeps us in operation.” His peers couldn’t be more pleased to see Perrin wielding NAAA’s gavel this year. Wisconsin operator Damon Reabe, arguably Jim’s competitor, but also his fourth pilot and a national industry leader, said about Perrin, “I couldn’t be happier knowing JP is our incoming president. He puts others’ interests ahead of his own at every crossroad and is an exceptional communicator due to his ability to listen and see things through others’ eyes. These traits result in leadership that NAAA will benefit from this year and for years to come.” Perrin will be the first NAAA president to lead the industry into its second century of existence—and he is enthusiastic about the agricultural aviation industry’s future direction. “We have always faced challenges in the past and will continue to do so. I believe regulatory challenges will continue to be the primary issue, but the work being done by NAAA on both labeling pesticide products for aerial use and other key government policy issues will continue to be critical to our success. Even with these issues, we continue to grow as an industry. I’m wildly optimistic about the future of ag aviation.” He added, “It’s really the people in the industry that hold the key to the future, and I’m almost always very impressed with the people I know and meet that share this occupation and passion.”

Vice President Craig Craft (North Carolina) Craig Craft has owned Craft Air Services in Hertford, North Carolina, since 1997 and runs it with his wife, Leslie. She manages the office and is the primary customer liaison. The Crafts have two full-time pilots besides Craig and three ground employees. Their fleet includes two 510 Thrushes, a 400 turbine Thrush and an Air Tractor AT-502. They also farm 750 acres of corn and soybeans and have a small

manufacturing business that makes a John Deere seed boot mounting hole repair kit that Craig devised. Craft is back on NAAA’s Executive Committee after serving as NAAA’s treasurer in 2014 and its immediate past treasurer in ’15. He also is a past president of the North Carolina Agricultural Aviation Association and was its representative on NAAA’s board in 2020 and ’21. There are plenty of good things happening in agricultural aviation, but the industry also faces serious challenges. In terms of what is going well, Craft said, “The technology is phenomenal. It’s only getting better. The tools we have to work with are getting better by leaps and bounds, allowing us to be more efficient. Using less crop protection materials. Using less manpower. Using less fuel. We’re really making strides in that part of the industry.” On the other hand, regulatory matters are a seemingly neverending challenge. “There’s almost a relentless push against our industry from Washington,” Craft said. “If it wasn’t for NAAA, I’m not sure we’d even still have an industry at all. We could very easily go the way of Europe and be regulated out of existence. NAAA can’t do it alone, however. All aerial applicators need to be mindful of matters and affecting the industry and willing to pitch in, Craft observed. “All of us to some extent are riding on the coattails of the efforts of others, but we all need to do more. People who are not members need to join and support their state and national organization, and the ones that are members we need to get them to step up and participate in the associations. Not just attend but participate.”

Secretary Ray Newcomb (New Hampshire) Ray Newcomb is the co-owner of JBI Helicopter Services in Pembroke, New Hampshire, with his wife, Donna. Ray grew up on a dairy farm and fell in love with aviation at an early age. He graduated from Hawthorne College in New Hampshire in 1983 with an associate degree in aeronautical engineering, a bachelor’s in business and a commercial helicopter pilot’s certificate to go with his commercial fixed-wing license. In late 1983, Ray joined Joe Brigham as the first employee of Joe Brigham Inc., the registered trade name of JBI Helicopter Services. Newcomb bought Brigham out in 1995. Since then, JBI has expanded from three helicopters to 13. JBI’s fleet includes Bell 206 Jet Rangers, Bell 206L LongRangers and B 4 | agairupdate.com

Bell 407s. The company performs pipeline patrol, mosquito abatement, forestry, cranberry and corn applications, cover crop seeding and aerial firefighting across the Northeast and throughout the country. The Newcombs have 70 employees between JBI Helicopter Services, Craig Avionics and T&M Aviation in Louisiana. Even though he had been a member of the Northeast Agricultural Aviation Association (NEAAA) for 20 years by then, Newcomb did not become an NAAA member until 2017. “I was aware of [NAAA]. To be honest, though, I was confused and didn’t quite understand what NAAA did,” he confesses. “Then once I found out, I wished I’d been a member a long, long time ago. It’s NAAA that is marching the effort forward to Washington and allowing us to do what we do.” Newcomb says he now has a much better grasp of how much NAAA does for the industry, including important ongoing work like ensuring that products are labeled and relabeled for aerial use. “We can put our blinders on and think about just flying and how we’re going to apply the product, but if you don’t have a product labeled for it, the helicopter and the airplane are useless,” Newcomb said. “Having NAAA and having people like [Government Relations Chairman] Damon [Reabe] that have taken an expressed interest in making sure that these products are labeled is just unbelievably important.” Newcomb is looking forward to serving as NAAA’s secretary and taking on a larger role with the association than he has for the past five years as the NEAAA representative on NAAA’s board. “Without the volunteers and the staff, we wouldn’t have an industry. I firmly believe that. When I talk to people that aren’t members, I try to educate them. I say, ‘You know what? I was in your shoes once also. So just join and come to a meeting. I think you’d be appreciative of what they do.’ These people are doing a job for our industry, and we should be appreciative of that and help in any way we can.”

Treasurer Darrel Mertens (Colorado) Darrel Mertens is entering his 39th season as the owner/operator of Aero Applicators Inc. in Sterling, Colorado. Aero SEAT Inc. is the aerial fire contracting arm of his company. Between them, Mertens has six full-time and four part-time employees and five turbine airplanes. Two Air Tractor AT-802Fs are used exclusively for fire work, while an AT-402 and 602 are reserved for full-time ag work. The fifth aircraft, an AT-802 with a Transland Switchback system, quickly converts from ag to fire work.

UNITED STATES

Mertens was elected NAAA’s new treasurer at the association’s December 2021 board meeting. In some respects, he is an unorthodox choice for treasurer, seeing as he previously served as NAAA’s vice president in 2018. It is more common to go from treasurer to vice president than the other way around. In reality, the treasurer has more official duties and makes a two-year commitment to stay on NAAA’s Executive Committee the following year as the immediate past treasurer, so filling the position with a seasoned officer has merit. Mertens has been a generous supporter of NAAA, so much so that he donated a two-seat, open-cockpit Grumman Ag-Cat to NAAA’s auction at the 2021 Ag Aviation Expo. Such generosity comes from an appreciation for NAAA that deepened after he became a board member in 2014. “For the first 20 years, 25 years, I was merely a member, and all I did to contribute was pay my dues. And I think the dues merely represent 25% of the cost of membership,” Mertens said. “But after I became a board member, that’s when I realized the complexity of this organization and the issues that were taken care of for me that I didn’t even know anything about before I was a board member—whether it be the fuel tax issue or the government relations issues.” As treasurer, Mertens realizes the importance of acquiring

more members. Doing so will bolster NAAA’s efforts to contend with the array of legislative and regulatory challenges confronting the industry. “We need to get more people in the organization,” Mertens said. “We’ve got less than a third of the operators being members of NAAA and less than a fourth of the pilots. The pilots are the ones that earn their living by that. And operators need the pilots. It’s a cooperative effort, but we just need to get more people at the conventions—more people paying their dues. We need the voices. The strength of our association is the diversity that we show.”

Strength in Numbers: Join NAAA NAAA is fortunate to have a dedicated group of officers and volunteer leaders serving on its board of directors, but there is also strength in numbers. If you aren’t a member, the single-most effective way you can address the range of critical issues facing your business is by joining NAAA. The payoff far exceeds what you will spend in dues in the form of effective advocacy, national representation, education and safety programs and the personal connections you will make as you participate in association activities. REGINA’S PERSPECTIVE

Regina Farmer regina.farmer@chem-man.com

Chem-Man Celebrates 30 Years! I can’t believe it’s been thirty years since “ChemMan” was born! The year 1992 seems like yesterday when my parents built me a tiny office in their department store where I wrote custom programs in the good ole days of ‘DOS.’ I had written hundreds of programs looking for that package that would take off. Little did I know when I was approached by a friend that ran a ground rig that I would be selling what became “Chem-Man” for 30 years and going. After the program was built, around six aerial applicators purchased the program for their businesses in the surrounding area. This confirmed my decision to make “Chem-Man” (for chemical management) the package I was looking for.

B 6 | agairupdate.com

I had a friend that was a graphic artist, and he helped me develop a manual. I had a cute little ag pilot as my logo, but it has been upgraded to a more modern look now (although I miss the cute man). I hired “Lynn Hess Baum” to help me, and we had a lot of fun building the program. It seemed the requests never quit coming. Everyone in different areas had their own set of regulations and needs. I advertised in the former “Ag Pilot” magazine and started getting calls right away. We started going to the southern conventions and then decided it was time to go to the nationals. I’ll never forget it. We had to ship our big bulky

computer to Reno, and when we got there, the monitor was lying there cracked. With snow on the ground, we started walking down the road (about a mile) and found a Best Buy where we bought our first flat monitor. (This was when the price had finally dropped). We loaded it in a grocery cart, and back to the convention hall we went. Lynn worked for me for about thirteen years and eventually married and moved off. In 2015 I decided to move the program to an online format. (I had hired someone to write an online medical program, and I felt like it was time for Chem-Man to move up). I hired more online developers and a support team. We added mapping, GPS, inventory, applied log data, and the ability to log in from anywhere. I never realized how fast it would take off!

One of the most incredible things in this industry is the wonderful people. My husband and I have traveled for many years to visit operations. Our company has grown fast (now over 16 employees) and is still growing! Many people call us by word of mouth, but with the help of “Ag Air Update” and conventions and social media, most people know about us. We’re also getting calls from South America, Australia, Brazil, Libya, and even Ecuador! One of the most incredible things in this industry is the wonderful people. My husband and I have traveled for many years to visit operations. Conventions are always so fun, and each area has its way of hosting. You never know if you’re going to see a crawfish race, participate in a barrel throwing contest or feel like a penguin when you’re trying to get to your motel!

I’ve genuinely built some great relationships in this industry that I feel are my best friends. I’ve also tragically lost many friends in this industry and hope someday that this will change with the help of technology. I’ve got so many customers that I started with retiring now. I’m even helping some of their grandkids! Oh well, retiring is not for me! I’m a people person, and I love working. I’ll be working as long as y’all can put up with me! Y’all stay safe! Regina

Scientifically Proven: Newest Travicar/SPE Electrostatic Doesn’t Change Droplet Size

Left: Brad Fritz, wind tunnel operator. Center: Dan Martin, checking system voltage. Right: Laser diffraction measuring hardware.

In early December 2021, Ag-Flite Specialties participated in wind tunnel testing to demonstrate that the extensive work that Bradley Fritz, Lead Research Engineer, in producing the USDA-ARS aerial spray nozzle models are consistent with Travicar/SPE’s latest electrostatic hardware.

College Station Research Leader Bradley Fritz: “The USDA-ARS Aerial Spray Nozzle Models were developed to provide aerial applicators with a tool for determining the droplet size resulting from an application scenario based on the nozzle used and the operational conditions of the application. They provide a quick and easy interface depicting droplet size and classification information. Applicators are responsible for appropriate setup and operation of their spray system to ensure applications meets product label requirements and provide the most efficient delivery of the product to the target while mitigating off-target movement. Complying with the label requirements, related to spray system set up, typically means falling within a specified

spray rate and targeted droplet size or spray classification.” The recent testing used two spray tips that produced medium sized spray droplets: a 8006 Teejet flat fan, and a CP 4006 flat fan; angled at 15 degrees. Both were analyzed in the latest standardized, calibrated USDA-ARS wind tunnel. The wind tunnel is computer controlled for producing simulated air speeds and utilizes the latest laser diffraction equipment for determining droplet size spectrums. Travicar/SPE state that their electrostatic kits charge the whole spray cloud produced behind the aircraft reducing hang time because of the attraction to the plants and earth. The smaller the droplet, the greater the static charge, the greater the attraction to the plant that results in less contaminants to the atmosphere and environment all without physically changing droplet size. The spray tips were tested with the electrostatic turned on at 6,000 volts, and 12,000 volts. The results substantiate all previous data: the USDAARS spray droplet models matched previous

Mabry I. Anderson An Insider’s History of Agricultural Aviation

The Move Westward — Chapter Three continued…

Louisiana and Mississippi Developments Pioneer A.T. Morgan of Morgan Crop Service, Lake Charles, Louisiana, applying fertilizer to rice

The lands and waters along the southern Louisiana coastline, particularly the areas surrounding the towns of Lake Charles, Crowley, Abbeville, Jeanerette, Morgan City, and Belle Rose, are fascinating to the eye and a dream come true for hunters, fishermen, and ag pilots.

in the early 1950s.

Ducks and geese winter throughout this region by the millions. Fish of every species, both salt and fresh water, are there for the taking. And rice grows almost endlessly across this ultra-flat, water-rich region. Lakes and streams with fascinating French names like Calisieu Lake, Lake Misere, Bayou Queue de Tortue, Lake Palourde, and Vermilion Bay abound. A stranger in these parts has no trouble at all envisioning this country 200 years ago, when pirates plied their trade on the nearby open Gulf and hid away in this vast swampland until the coast was clear.

B 18 | agairupdate.com

Historically, this has been rice growing country, and at the end of World War II the exploding economy brought an even more rapid increase in tilled acreage. This created an early and exceptionally strong market for agricultural flying and other more modern farming techniques.

A.T. Morgan A pioneer in this field was A.T. Morgan, an experienced ag pilot who had broken into the ag flying game in 1945 with Ralph Sneed. Morgan, after working with Sneed for a few years, organized his own Morgan Crop Service, based at Lake Charles. Morgan apparently introduced seeding rice by air to this section of Louisiana, in addition to offering modern weed control and fertilizing services. He developed an agricultural flying firm that was to become a leader not only in Louisiana, but throughout the country as well.

Florida’s prime vegetable growing land offered excellent business opportunities for both growers and aerial applicators alike. Pitts-type spreader on Stearman.

Morgan’s early fleet was composed of Stearmans, converted to 450 horsepower P & W engines. His service became so sought after and well known that it attracted pilots from all over the country. Most operations at this time were “seasonal” by nature. Cotton flying pilots from further north, particularly the Delta country of Mississippi and Arkansas, migrated regularly to South Louisiana and worked rice seasons with Morgan and other new operators who had established operations to take care of an increasing demand.

B 20 | agairupdate.com

Among Morgan’s early pilots were Mace Craft, Hank Gardner, Marvin “Lefty” Gardner, Lloyd Steen, Charles White, Charlie Tumminello, John Tunze, Jr., Richard Donahoe, Charles Dally, O.A. Broussard, “Penny” Rogers, Dale Kelly, and A.J. Harmon. A pillar in Morgan’s firm was Leonce Bergeron, who became general manager in 1948 and still holds that position today. Morgan operated satellite bases at Kaplan and Anahuac, Louisiana. In 1960 he opened up a sizable year-round unit at Leland, Mississippi, under the supervision of one of his pilots, Lloyd Steen. Steen operated this unit very successfully

and later bought it out and operated it under his own name until his untimely death in the 1970s in a two-plane, midair collision. Steen, a leader in Mississippi’s agricultural flying industry, worked diligently for the better of the industry. He served as president of the Mississippi Agricultural Aviation Association for two terms. Morgan himself played a leading role in the advancement of agricultural aviation and was one of the organizers of the National Agricultural Aviation Association. He served as it’s first treasurer in 1967 and has been on the NAAA Board a number of times. Morgan remained extremely active in agricultural aviation until his untimely death in 1984. Other post-war leaders in Louisiana were Ray Clawson at Winnsboro, Bob Dillon at Gueydan, Bob Gaumnitz at Tallulah, Emery Lyon at Welsh, Raymond Breazeale at Natchitoches, who had operated before the war, Dayton Waller at Shreveport, and slightly later Ray Thornton at Belle Rose.

Morgan himself played a leading role in the advancement of agricultural aviation and was one of the organizers of the National Agricultural Aviation Association. Thornton and his friend Norman Watts went into business together at Belle Rose in about 1959. They specialized in sugar cane work, primarily in the application of cryolite and Ryania for control of sugar cane borer.

B 22 | agairupdate.com

They purchased seven new Piper Pawnees and quickly became leaders in the sugar cane growing region. After about four years of successful operation, Thornton bought out Watt’s interest and began operating completely on his own as Cane Air Service. He was among the first to become interested in helicopters and purchased an early Bell G-2, which was the beginning of a helicopter fleet that was to become the backbone of his business. Some of Thornton’s early pilots were John Stuart, who still has an operation at Coushatta, Louisiana, Phil Livingston, Darryl Johnson, Buddy Majors, and Lester Warner. Thorton became very active in state and national agricultural aviation affairs and was one of the National Agricultural Aviation Association’s first presidents, serving with distinction in 1970. He still operates extensively in the Belle Rose, Louisiana, area. Up the river, in the famed YazooMississippi Delta, agricultural flying was booming, especially in the flat, highly productive cotton growing country. Modem dispensing equipment and Stearman conversions were available in quantity from Mississippi Valley Aircraft Service in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and operations were multiplying at an unbelievable rate. Liquid spraying was rapidly replacing dusting.

BLAKELY, GA — If you have ever operated a new Ayres Thrush, or in the last ten years had an Ayres Corporation factory-in-the-field service call, the names Don Murphy and Bruce Andrews are not new to you. However, with the closing of Ayres Corporation’s doors, some may have thought the personalized and professional service coming from these two individuals would be lost forever. Not so! With the opening of new company Aircraft Specialty in Blakely, Georgia, Thrush operators, as well as other ag aircraft operators and general aviation aircraft alike, can again depend on the style of service and support they had come to trust from Don Murphy and Bruce Andrews. Additionally, Aircraft Specialty has brought together a select team of former Ayres Corporation employees to work within the company.

This stands to reason, since Don worked with Ayres Corporation for 28 years serving as VicePresident of New Product Development and Manager of Product Support. While Bruce, an active ag operator since 1984 (Bruce’s Flying Service) and an ag pilot since 1981, as well as a licensed Aircraft Inspector (AI), has worked during the last 10 winters with Ayres Corporation in Product Support as a field representative. Factory field work needed in the Thrush program during that time, generally was done by Bruce, taking him from coast to coast in the United States, throughout Central America and parts of South America. This work included the numerous Thrush spar cap mods that were made in compliance to service bulletin and airworthiness directive, SB-AG-39.

Owned and operated by Don and Bruce, Aircraft Specialty offers a full line of factory-like support

Capstan AG’s SwathPRO Aerial Application System Surpasses Anything Ag Aviation has Seen in System Spraying Technology The SwathPRO Aerial Application System from CapstanAG gives ag pilots individual nozzle

The aerial application industry has always been one to welcome innovation. In the past 100 years, technical advancements have been no less than astounding. This has been especially true in the last 15-20 years. Now, the industry is being introduced to a relatively new technology that solves many aerial application problems.

control previously unattainable in aerial application.

B 30 | agairupdate.com

Suppose a pilot could change two of the most critical parameters of spraying during an application and just suppose the pilot wanted to change the spray droplet size to a predetermined one because the wind component changed, or they detected a temperature change? Maybe the

application rate needed to be adjusted without affecting the boom pressure. To make these changes while literally “on the fly” would be a game-changer for ag aviation. CapstanAG’s SwathPRO Aerial Application System is a sophisticated aerial spray system that can deliver all the above. SwathPRO’s technology surpasses anything ag aviation has seen in spray system technology. The system can alter the swath width and flow rate with predetermined settings by cutting off individual nozzles and adjusting spray boom pressure while in flight.

It gets better. While in flight, the pilot can select individual nozzles to cut off or on. This can be advantageous when a nozzle is streaming. The pilot also can choose either the left, right, or center booms individually or a combination of boom selections while spraying and further enhance the control of the spray. This feature is incredibly beneficial. For example, the pilot can spray the boundaries with a large droplet spectrum where there is a concern for drift and finish the field’s interior with a finer droplet spectrum.

management.

Based in Topeka, Kansas, CapstanAG is no stranger to liquid applications. Since 1994,

CapstanAG has specialized in pressure control and flow distribution on self-propelled sprayers, creating the patented Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technology which has become a standard in the industry. Significant milestones reached with the SwathPRO system include 1.7 million acres covered in the past three years, cockpit integration with controllers, and Auto Mode that controls the flow control valve to keep constant boom pressure regardless of aircraft speed or rate changes. Using CapstanAG’s unique PWM, each nozzle is controlled from the cockpit. Coupled with the PWM solenoid valve, Auto

Mode provides proper flow distribution of the spray liquid. CapstanAG is partnering with Air Tractor and Air Tractor dealers for installations, service, training, marketing and sales. All SwathPRO sales go through Air Tractor as a master dealer. The systems will be installed at the Air Tractor factory and Air Tractor dealers’ operations. All SwathPRO sales for all used planes will go through Air Tractor or its dealer network. CapstanAG has a team of engineers and technical specialists who provide on-site service and support. CapstanAG is currently engaged with the FAA for STC approval of the SwathPRO System. Soon the system will be offered as an option on new Air Tractors from the factory. CapstanAG is firmly committed to this process and is investing in further advances for SwathPRO that will benefit ag pilots. The CapstanAG’s patented technology, pilot feedback and industry knowledge in flow distribution bring a new spray system, the SwathPRO Aerial Application System, to the aerial application industry focused on pilot safety, application accuracy and drift mitigation.

A WING AND A PRAYER

Carlin Lawrence carlin@agairupdate.com

Living Our Everyday Life To Please God

Many Christians don’t think they can worship God in the everyday things of life, but that’s not correct thinking.

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord” (Colossians 3:16). The word “dwell” means to be at home; let the Word of God be at home in your heart and mind. God’s word should be so engrained in our thoughts, words, and actions that it overflows into our everyday life—a Christian’s life should be consumed with learning and obeying God’s Word. It’s the only way to live our life to please God. David wrote, “How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word… Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:9-11). Christians should know and understand God’s instruction book—the Bible. The Bible is the most important book in the universe. We don’t have to know everything in the Bible in great detail! With few exceptions, most of the Bible is in plain language, and can be explained and understood in very few words. If a pastor wants his congregation to grow spiritually he should take them through a chapter of the Bible every week. God told Jeremiah to write, “My people are foolish, they have not known Me. They are silly children, and they have no understanding. They are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge” (Jeremiah 4:22). Many Christians are wise to live according to worldly ways and traditions and foolish in living according to the ways of the Lord. Why? Because they haven’t been taught the Bible in its context. The writer of Hebrews wrote, “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of

B 36 | agairupdate.com

God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food” (Hebrews 5:12). Paul wrote, “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work” (2 Tim. 3:16–17). The Bible is the authority for living our life and accomplishing God’s work on this earth. When Solomon wanted to know how to rule God’s people he asked the Lord “Now give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people; for who can judge this great people of Yours?” (2 Chronicles 1:10). Paul told Timothy, “Study to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). “Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Colossians 3:17). As a Christian we live in a natural world, and we live in a spiritual world. We have to take care of our earthly bodies; which requires us to eat, drink, bathe, and so many other things that concern our earthly existence. But we also have a relationship with God through our faith in Jesus Christ which requires us to live our earthly lives in accordance to the standards that God has set forth for us in the Bible. Some Christians try to separate their earthly life completely from their spiritual life. This will always cause a Christian to have divided priorities and having two different set of rules to live by, which is a confusing and difficult way to live our life on this earth. Paul wrote to the Corinthian church, “Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God”

UNITED STATES

For Aerial Applicators Only! (I Corinthians 10:31). Paul brings pleasing God right down to the basic things in life, such as eating, drinking, our work place, our family life, and the things we do for our pleasure. Even driving our car. Many Christians don’t think they can worship God in the everyday things of life, but that’s not correct thinking. When Jesus met the woman at the well she asked Him where the correct place to worship is. Jesus said, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24). Jesus is telling this woman that we can worship God at any time and at any place. Jesus didn’t have a divided life; He didn’t make any distinction between His everyday actions and worshiping God. Jesus said, “I always do the things that please My Father” (John 8:29).

Paul is telling us to “do all to the glory of God” because this is what God expects our life as a Christian to be. Jesus lived in an earthly body, and everything He did brought glory to God— Jesus turned His whole life into a life of sacrifice to God. Jesus even turned the act of a lowly donkey into a sacrifice to the Lord when He said of the donkey “the Lord has need of him” (Matthew 21:1-3). As Jesus Christ rode the donkey into Jerusalem the multitudes cried out, “Hosanna in the highest” (Matthew 21:1-5). Paul tells us to take every aspect of our everyday life, from getting up in the morning to going to bed at night, and placing it before God as an offering of sacrifice, praise and worship, because this is how God expects us to live our daily life (Romans 12:1). If your daily words and actions don’t glorify God, what makes you think that God will accept your Sunday worship? Every Christian’s worship of God should involve their everyday lifestyle as much as going to church. “God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things” (Acts 17:2425). Christians should live their life as an offering to the Lord, staying strong in the faith, making sure that everything we think, say, and do is an acceptable sacrifice to the Lord. Christians should think of their entire everyday lifestyle as a service to God” (Ephesians 6:5-8). agairupdate.com | B 37

NTSB Identification: CEN21LA350

Date: June 20, 2021 Location: Edwardsburg, MI Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-502B Injuries: Minor

Date: August 4, 2021 Location: Waukon, IA Aircraft: ROBINSON HELICOPTER R44 Injuries: Minor The pilot was conducting an agricultural application pass when the helicopter struck a powerline crossing the cornfield being sprayed. He did not see the line until exiting the helicopter after the accident. Earlier in the morning he had surveyed the area for obstacles but did not observe any lines crossing the field. The pilot commented that his initial survey pass was completed toward the east with the sun “low in the sky and in [his] eyes.” He noted that there were no issues with the helicopter before contacting with the power line. The helicopter sustained substantial damage to the main rotor system, the fuselage, and the empennage. Probable Cause and Findings: The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot’s failure to maintain adequate clearance from a powerline during an agricultural application pass.

The pilot reported that while conducting an aerial application pass over a field, the airplane stuck trees and subsequently impacted the ground. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the fuselage, both wings, and empennage. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operations. The pilot reported that the field had rising terrain toward its southern edge and as the airplane approached the southern edge, the airplane was unable to climb above the rising terrain. It is likely the pilot failed to identify the rising terrain in time to clear the trees. Probable Cause and Findings: The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot’s failure to identify rising terrain and to maintain terrain clearance from trees during an aerial application pass that resulted in an in-flight collision with trees and terrain.

Aborted Takeoffs By Ted Delanghe One of the most harrowing experiences of my flying career occurred because of an aborted takeoff. I was flying an AgTruck off a farmer’s 2500-foot grass strip, with a friend of mine flying a 450 HP AgCat. We worked all morning, took a lunch break, then back to work in the early afternoon. As the wind had switched direction, we changed from departing westbound from our mixing/loading area to taxing down the runway for an eastbound takeoff. I arrived back at the strip with our service truck just in time to catch the AgCat begin its takeoff roll. I watched the aircraft accelerate, and all looked and sounded normal until about ¾ of the way down the strip. Then I heard a distinct change in the engine sound, and the throttle retarded to idle as the pilot had elected to abort the takeoff. I hopped back in the truck and started to head down the strip to check things out. The AgCat must have been very close to takeoff speed when the takeoff was aborted, and I thought at the time it was going to be pretty close to getting it stopped before the end of the runway. Well, the pilot got the AgCat stopped, but just into the mixing/loading area! I could see that his right brake was billowing white smoke due to the heavy braking. As the Cat came to a complete stop, the mixer/loader walked directly towards the right brake. Unfortunately for him, the prop was still windmilling, and he walked right into the prop arc. I don’t recall seeing the exact moment he was hit, but as I came around the Cat, he was flat on his back and not moving. At first glance, it didn’t look good, but this was his lucky day, as the only injury he sustained were two deep lacerations to his right triceps. That incident got me thinking about takeoff aborts because the situation could have had a lot worse ending. The reason the pilot aborted was sound enough – he had lost power in a cylinder and didn’t think he would be able to get airborne and clear the powerlines at the end of the strip.

I was also aware of several other takeoff abort situations that didn’t turn out well. A Turbo Thrush that aborted too late and nosed over and had a prop strike because of heavy braking. My personal experience happened when I was flying a 600 HP Thrush off a remote strip. I was accidentally overloaded but decided I could safely take off with some room to spare. I realized the acceleration was below normal early in the takeoff roll but elected to continue the takeoff anyways. Too late, I finally realized I couldn’t get airborne safely and couldn’t stop before the end of the strip and elected to partially jettison the load to clear the trees at the departure end—an expensive misjudgment on my part.

A heavier than normal aircraft is one of the primary culprits in pilots deciding to abort a takeoff. Keeping these incidents in mind, what are the critical points that comprise an analysis of a takeoff abort? The situation with the AgCat is relatively straightforward. With the strip being only 2500 feet long and powerlines at one end, there wasn’t a lot of wiggle room to successfully deal with an emergency such as an engine failure on takeoff. This is especially true if the aircraft was close to getting airborne when the emergency occurred. Lightening the load would have been a sound option for the new eastbound takeoff scenario. A heavier than normal aircraft is one of the primary culprits in pilots deciding to abort a takeoff. It typically happens with an accidental agairupdate.com | A 31

INTERNATIONAL

overload or not adjusting load size to the weather conditions (temperature, RH, wind velocity, etc.). If there is an easy way to reduce the load, the odds are that will happen. If there is no easy way to unload the aircraft, odds are the pilot will elect to take the oversized load. It all goes back to planning, such as having a suction probe that can easily be inserted into the hopper to reduce the load to a safe size. Boom caps can be removed as well to remove excess loads. Or, if required, a pail can come in very handy, though time-consuming to use.

The young lad I mentioned at the beginning is one lucky lad indeed. However, we found out later that he had never been appropriately briefed by the farmer on safety protocols, and neither the AgCat pilot nor I had gone through a safety briefing with him. That could have been a deadly oversight. One of my favorite rules in that regard is that NO ONE except the pilot should ever find themselves ahead of the leading edge of the wing with the engine running unless specifically trained to do so, e.g., with a power cart start.

Early recognition of a potential abort situation is part of that huge ‘ounce of prevention’ basket. One of the slick tricks of tailwheel aircraft is that they have a built-in acceleration check, i.e., when the tail comes up, the aircraft is on the mains in the maximum acceleration attitude. Pilots should note precisely where the tail normally comes up relative to the runway or other markers, and if by some circumstance it doesn’t happen at the usual point, it’s easy to abort the takeoff run and check things out.

As with all operations, know your aircraft’s capabilities. An AgTruck that will comfortably handle a 180-gallon load under normal conditions becomes a dog with just 20 more gallons. Same with a 600 HP Air Tractor moving from a standard 360 load to 400 gallons. Not a lot of fun trundling down the runway, wishing you had more runway to work with.

Fatigue can be the silent killer lurking in all types of operations, including takeoff abort scenarios. From a pure physics perspective, it’s the kinetic energy (KE) of the moving aircraft that must be absorbed by the brakes or by using Beta, or a combination of the two. The formula for kinetic energy is KE = ½ mv2, where “m” is the mass of the aircraft, and “v” is the velocity. The squaring of the velocity means a rapid buildup of KE with speed. If you compare the KE of the same aircraft at different speeds, you compare their velocities squared. 40 knots squared is 1600, 60 knots squared is 3600, i.e., only a 20-knot difference means the amount of energy that must be absorbed at 60 knots is 3600/1600 = 2.25 more than at 40 knots.

A 32 | agairupdate.com

Last but not least, fatigue can be the silent killer lurking in all types of operations, including takeoff abort scenarios. When tired physically or mentally, people tend to be error-prone, such as overloading an aircraft and the pilot accepting the excessive load instead of reducing the load size. Keep an eye out for each other to keep things safe – it’s a dangerous world out there. Ted Delanghe is a former Canadian Air Force pilot turned ag pilot, having flown more than 50 aircraft types from ultralights to fighters, including a wide range of ag aircraft. He resides in Regina, Saskatchewan, where he is also a business consultant with a specific focus on aviation and aerospace.

SPREADING THE FACTS

Michelle Miller - michelle@thefarmbabe.com

Crop dusters? Nah. Aerial Applicators Do WAY More Than Just “Chemicals” Here’s another series of great facts about aerial application to share with people on your social media channels, your schools, etc. We all know everything aerial application can do, but not everyone else does! Let’s go beyond “chemicals.” As a career writer and dedicated “myth buster” in food and farming, one of my favorite topics to discuss with the general public is the topic of crop dusters. Although that term is outdated, it’s still worthy of a discussion. Do people outside of our industry still only think of chemicals when they think of ag pilots and aerial application? The reality is that agricultural aviation has a beautiful story to tell and is amazing at solving A 34 | agairupdate.com

all sorts of problems. While the average person who’s far removed from where their food comes from may only think of keeping scary unknown chemicals out of their food, it’s essential to share the transparency of the safety of the food supply and how ag pilots solve a ton of real-world problems! According to a study at Texas A&M University, the agriculture industry in the US would lose $37 Billion a year if aerial application ceased and $18.3 Billion in the corn market alone. If farmers weren’t able to protect their crops, it is said that up to 80% of the world’s food and fiber would be lost. These are alarming statistics that point out the importance of this great industry!

But what other problems do you all solve? Besides protecting crops, here are six other notable uses and purposes for ag pilots that do good to share with the world…. you do way more than contribute to the food supply! 1. Seeding cover crops. Soil Health and regenerative agriculture are hot topics in the media these days, and a couple of the best ways to improve soil health are to seed cover crops. Cover crops reduce erosion, improve nutrient retention and maximize inputs, deposit nutrients back in the soil, and improve overall water and environmental quality measures. Aerial application can also help reduce soil compaction and offer additional precision agriculture benefits. 2. Nutrient application. Plants are living, just like people! And just like people, plants need food and medicine to survive. Without ag pilots, the world’s crops wouldn’t be nearly as healthy - and healthy plants make a healthy society. Cheers to aerial application for “feeding our food.” 3. “Only you can fight forest fires!” Okay…. more than just you. While Smokey the Bear preaches prevention, aerial firefighter pilots solve these problems, too! According to Cal Fire - the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection- approximately 5.4% of California’s total acreage was aflame at one time or another between 2013 and 2018. Ag pilots are skilled and trained to be precise and can play a significant role in putting out fires - literally and figuratively. 4. Solve problems in remote areas like rural Alaska. Given the harsh weather and infrastructure challenges of Alaska, trucks cannot always get to the people that need fuel. Pilots can literally save lives by hauling heating and transportation fuel into rural communities to help people get from point A to point B and beyond. 5. Stock lakes. Another problem in rural areas? Remote locations at high elevations pose challenges for animals, and parks and wildlife organizations partner with pilots for restoration efforts. A 36 | agairupdate.com

Fishing plays a major role in providing healthy protein for the people, and the aviation industry can help restock waters to restore a healthy ecosystem and the fish population for a multitude of reasons. 6. Remember the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico back in 2010? Airplanes were used to spread absorbent oil spill dispersant materials to help clean it up. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), dispersants are usually applied by airplane or helicopter, but also can be applied by boat. To increase the chances that an application will be effective, spill responders try to choose the best combination of dispersant droplet size, concentration, and application rate. They also try to target dispersant applications carefully, sometimes even using spotter planes that use infrared detectors to locate spilled oil as precisely as possible. Sound familiar? That’s because the Ag aviation world is true experts in material handling such as this. Bravo to the skill set you possess to solve these other real-world problems that directly benefit the environment. These are all conversations to be had with others around you… that the work you do can be way more than just agriculture! Pilots are responsible for so many facets of our day-to-day life that we may not always think about or take for granted. But thank YOU for all you do.

AG pilot (25+ years experience) seeks winter work in Jan/Feb/March and possibly April. A definite team player with excellent references. Looking for a professional operation with wellmaintained equipment. 8,800 hrs total time, 7,800 AG, most in AT-502. No accidents, no claims. Will consider other opportunities as well. Thank you for your consideration. Please email all inquiries to 1spraypilot724@gmail.com or call 386-963-5717, Cell 386-854-0761. Looking for an opportunity to move into a seat. I have good experience loading, having worked for a reputable operator in Southern Idaho for 10 months. Growing up on a ranch and working as a herdsman/cowboy as a working career, I understand long hours, little sleep, and hard work. I have my CDL with experience hauling cattle, flatbed, tanker, dump trucks with pups, and utilizing it with the spray operation. I can operate machinery efficiently, boom trucks, auger trucks, forklifts, telehandlers, etc. I can be trusted to run a load pad by myself and know the importance of checking chemical labels, amount of chemical, water source, fuel, etc. I have experience in dry and liquid work, am efficient in switching from dry to liquid and vice versa. We did a lot of government work and know what it takes to take the “show on the road” whether it be for dry or liquid, and making due loading off of remote strips. I can weld, have mechanical aptitude (would love to get my A&P), and learn quickly. The gentleman I worked for is very knowledgeable in the industry and passes that well to his employees, but I also know that there is a lot more for me to learn, and am eager to do so. I have my Single Engine Commercial Certificate with an instrument rating. I am sitting at 500+ hours with 150+ of that being tailwheel. I currently own a Piper Pacer and am building time quickly. If you have any questions or interest, please reach out to me at 406-930-0800. A lot of time I don’t have service so please leave a voicemail and or a text and I will be sure to get back to you.
