Take the time to explore. Finally, as you conduct the business of AlphaEast, make it your goal to connect with one you do not know, commit one goodwill deed and make this convention count because you were a part of it! I count it an honor and a privilege to serve as your lady chairwoman. Thank you for the opportunity! With A Servant’s Heart, Janet L. Life, Leadership, and Brotherhood Workshop Series FRIDAY, MARCH 27, 2015 – 12:00 PM – 1:15 PM DEFENDING THE DREAM: ALPHA AND POLITICAL ACTION, Grand Ballroom – Salon 1 The fatal killings of Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown and Eric Garner have captured the attention of the Alpha Phi Alpha and the nation. Brothers have sought to become politically active in ensuring that these types of injustices do not happen again in the future and many have asked “what is the Fraternity’s role in addressing these types of injustices”? In this session, brothers will learn how they can individually and collectively participate in political action to fight injustices in the communities we serve. Moderator Brother Erich McMillan-McCall, (Kappa Xi Lambda) Panelists Brother Sean Henry, (Kappa Xi Lambda)
SERVANTS OF ALL: ALPHA’S INNOVATIVE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS THAT BENEFIT COMMUNITIES, Grand Ballroom – Salon 2 Education is the great equalizer and opens doors of opportunity for all. As a nation, we must be committed to providing education equity and resources all students need to succeed. While this is the ideal, many Americans do not have access to a quality education and they are disproportionately minorities and male. This session will provide directors of educational activities, chapter presidents, community service chairs and other brothers with strategies and models that can be used to implement Alpha Phi Alpha’s Educational programs to impact young men and women in our communities. Several engagement models that are currently being used in Alpha East will be explored. Moderator Brother Anton Bizzell, (Mu Lambda) Panelists Brother Musa Abdullah, (Kappa Xi Lambda) Brother John P. Turner, (Rho)
FRATERNITY BROTHERS: APPROPRIATE REPRESENTATIONS OF THE ALPHA BRAND, Grand Ballroom – Salon 4 The VH1 show, Sorority Sisters, featuring women from each of the nation’s Black-Greek letter sororities (Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta and Sigma Gamma Rho) set off a national debate on appropriate representations by members of Black-Greek Letter Organization (BGLO). The show was the focus of a national boycott by members of these organizations that led to a loss of sponsors, the expulsion of cast members from their respective organizations and eventually the cancellation of the reality TV series. While Sorority Sisters is now extinct, there are others who worry that the Alpha Brand can be similarly tarnished by the individual actions of others. This session will discuss an array of issues that relates to representing the Alpha brand including dress, grooming, public image, conduct while wearing paraphernalia and proper conduct while attending Alpha events, conferences and conventions. Moderator Brother Sean Gayle, (Kappa XI Lambda) Panelists Brother Richard Bates, (Kappa Xi Lambda) Brother Joshua Harris, General Headquarters Brother Steven D. King (Delta Lambda) 27
