VICTORIA PLUM INVESTS IN NEW TOYOTA FORKLIFT FLEET Online bathroom retailer Victoria Plum has optimised its intralogistics processes by investing in a new fleet of more than 50 electric-powered Toyota lift trucks. Including state-of-the-art reach and counterbalance models as well as powered pallet trucks and order pickers, the trucks will be deployed at the company’s 277,000 sq ft distribution centre in Doncaster. During extensive trials Victoria Plum looked for equipment that would cut running costs, improve fleet utilisation and, most importantly, achieve high levels of safety and lift truck operator comfort. Victoria Plum’s operations director, Andy Svenson, said: “As a business, Victoria Plum is fully committed to keeping its workers and the workplace safe. We have implemented various programmes aimed at preventing accidents, encouraging safe behaviour and promoting wellbeing amongst our staff. Forklift truck safety is therefore a priority across our Doncaster distribution centre.” The new forklift fleet will be supplied on a contract rental agreement that includes service and maintenance support. In addition, regular review meetings will be held to consider any improvements to processes or changes to the make-up of the fleet as well as the way trucks are deployed at the Doncaster site. This will highlight any aspects of Victoria Plum’s materials handling operation that could be further enhanced. Data for each review will be provided by Toyota’s I_Site technology, which is a feature of Victoria Plum’s new machines. I_Site is designed to optimise the performance of every size and type of forklift fleet. The technology enables trucks to become communications devices capable of transmitting valuable data regarding a forklift’s performance to a central information hub. If required, I_Site can also provide data on a truck operator’s efficiency. Receiving this data from connected vehicles will give Victoria Plum’s distribution centre management team a better understanding of their intralogistics operation and the power to take more control over it. As part of the agreement, Toyota will supply a battery changing station along 10

FEEDERS & CONVEYING

LUXME’S ONE-STEP COOLER/ CONVEYOR CUTS FOOD PRODUCERS’ FLOORSPACE AND COSTS WHILE INCREASING PRODUCTIVITY In response to food industry demands for an enclosed system that can safely transfer and cool hot food powders and mixes in one single step, Luxme International has launched the THERMOLuxme. A tubular chain conveyor with the addition of jacketed pipes containing cooling fluid, it conveys and cools material from 260°C to 43°C and can save food producers up to £300,000 by eliminating the cost and floorspace required for a separate cooling stage. In food processing, hot materials such as powders and mixes must be cooled to ambient temperatures after baking, frying, boiling and broiling for safe handling in the next stage of the process; for example, bagging, packaging, moving, storing or loading. Cooling also delays the fermentation process, which can cause material waste due to mildew and mould growth. Replacing a separate cooling station with the

14

Bulk Solids Today

THERMOLuxme Tubular Chain Conveying and Cooling System can result in capital cost savings of more than £300,000, since no separate coolers and/or chillers are required. Further savings include a reduction in plant floorspace; lower operational costs; decreased maintenance charges; and reduced material losses from product spoilage due to mildew. Future operational cost savings can also be made due to eliminated annual rises in electrical energy fees. As products are cooled while they are conveyed, food producers can also enjoy increased productivity thanks to shorter processing times. Plus, treated and untreated municipal water sources, or water from elsewhere within the plant, can be used as the cooling fluid, removing additional cooling energy costs. As with all Luxme conveyors, the THERMOLuxme adheres to the highest standards of food hygiene.

FEEDERS & CONVEYING

Comprising an enclosed, sealed pipe assembly, any gases or moisture emitted from the hot material during transfer are contained and vented through the internal pipework using either vacuum, forced air or inert gases, protecting the food and the workforce. As a result, the THERMOLuxme can safely convey and cool up to 31m3 of hot food products per hour, such as high-fat content organic powders and mixes, roasted nuts and snacks, pet food kibble and precooked potato cubes/foods, at the same time as ensuring that work areas remain clean, dry and dustfree. Available in 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10-inch diameter options, the THERMOLuxme preserves product integrity by smoothly gliding food powders through the custom-designed chain and disc conveyor without pinching or crushing. With carbon steel, stainless steel 304 or 316L low-carbon stainless steel construction, it also comes with the option to specify glycol cooling chillers for applications with high inlet-to-outlet temperature differentiation over short transfer distances. Navam Jagan, President of Luxme International, states: “With a cooling differential of 217°C while conveying product, the THERMOLuxme is designed to save food producers money and floorspace by eliminating the need for an additional cooler or chiller station. It also keeps the work area – and therefore the workforce – safe and free from dust.” Bulk Solids Today

16

Bulk Solids Today

for a long time – almost every leading pet food brand around the world relies on our equipment, and we understand their unique needs. Now that these processors are seeing the value of digital sorting, we’ve leveraged our pet food application expertise to develop VERYX for these applications,” said Marco Azzaretti, Director of Marketing at Key. “Consumers are demanding higher and higher quality pet food, and VERYX can help manufacturers elevate their product quality to the level of human grade while improving the efficiency of their operation.” Key can integrate VERYX with a variety of their vibratory and mechanical grading solutions for transferring, scalping, size separation, fines removal, product distribution and more. Iso-Flo®, Impulse®, Zephyr™ and Marathon® vibratory conveyors, as well as their rotary separation equipment, are all suitable for pet foods, depending on the application. Built for rugged reliability, Key’s material handling solutions enhance sanitation with features such as open designs, fully-welded frames, nickel-plated finishes, oil-free

FEEDERS & CONVEYING drives, optional pan covers and more. Each VERYX is tailored with the optimal cameras, laser scanners, lighting, ejection system, product handling and software to meet each customer’s specific requirements. Utilizing in-air inspection, VERYX sees all sides of the product with no blind spots. Nextgeneration cameras and laser scanners offer twice the resolution of previous sensor technology to find smaller FM and defects. Available in different widths, VERYX satisfies a wide range of capacity requirements. To maximize FM and defect removal, VERYX can be equipped with Key’s proprietary Pixel Fusion™ technology, which combines signals from multiple cameras and laser scanners at the image pixel level to more clearly identify even the most difficult-to-detect FM and defects. Pixel Fusion helps VERYX to better identify specific FM types and enable the optional FMAlert™ function to send a smart alarm if a critical quality problem occurs, so quick corrective action can be taken. FMAlert also saves a time-stamped image of every critical piece of FM detected by the sorter, which helps processors document and pinpoint product quality events and trends. Key equips every VERYX with their Discovery™ suite of software capabilities, which enables the sorter to collect, analyze and share data while continuing to sort product. By harnessing data about the sort process and about every object flowing through the sorter, Discovery can reveal patterns and trends that improve sorting and control upstream and downstream processes. The information that Discovery provides allows processors to better manage incoming raw materials and optimize processes, achieving the next level in operational efficiency. VERYX eliminates the need for manual inspection, which decreases labor costs and ensures more consistent FM and defect removal while maximizing yields. To ease use and simplify operator training, a highly intuitive UI provides different views to users of various levels depending on their needs. Recipe-driven operation ensures customers can count on consistent performance from their VERYX sorter day in, day out. Operator qualification requirements are reduced, allowing a minimally-skilled individual to become a proficient user of the system in less than one hour. Key manufactures equipment in both the U.S. and Europe, supports customers worldwide through its extensive sales and SupportPro service network and offers integration services, from pre-engineering to line start-up. BOOMING ELECTRIC FORKLIFT MARKET With more and more forklift truck users opting for electric-power over IC-engine driven machines when the time comes to replace or upgrade their materials handling equipment fleet, the coming years are expected to bring a clear shift away from diesel and LPG towards electric forklifts. Indeed, Toyota Material Handling expect the UK market for electric counterbalanced forklift trucks to grow by as much as 10 per cent in the next five years. In this article, Toyota’s counterbalance specialist, Paul Bowers, considers some of the factors driving the rise of the electric-powered forklift market. CHARGING AHEAD According to the most reliable estimates, the forklift market has historically been split roughly 60-40 between LPG- or diesel-powered internal combustion engine (IC) trucks and battery-driven electric models – with diesel being the most dominant fuel. But the coming years are anticipated to bring a clear shift away from diesel and LPG towards electric forklifts. At Toyota Material Handling, for example, we expect the UK market for electric counterbalanced forklift trucks to grow by as much as 10 per cent in the next five years as more and more truck users opt for electric-power over IC-engine driven machines when the time comes to replace or upgrade their fleets.

Bulk Solids Today

The rise of the electric lift truck can be attributed to a number of different factors - including heightened environmental concerns, rising fuel prices and greater awareness of staff welfare. Advances in battery technology, such as the further development of lithium-Ion and to a lesser extent (for now) hydrogen fuel cells, are also leading to greater interest in electric power, while the wide ranging changes to intralogistics processes brought about by the seemingly relentless increase in internet shopping tend to favour electric trucks too. Of course, environmental issues have been on the corporate agenda for many years but recent talk of the introduction of a ‘carbon emissions tax’ has seen a sharp increase in the truck users that include likefor-like carbon emissions comparisons as part of their forklift fleet purchasing process. IC-engine trucks rarely come top of the class in such tests, which will not be a surprise to many given that electric-powered trucks have always been perceived to have the edge over the IC-engine alternative in all matters ‘green’. But it would be wrong to conclude that the electric truck market is only growing because diesel sales are in decline: recent developments in technology mean the electric lift truck is now a highly sophisticated product that offers real business benefits to the broadest range of users. And, furthermore, today’s battery-driven

BULK MATERIALS HANDLING

forklifts are capable of performing highly effectively within the type of harsh environments that historically only diesel trucks would be considered suitable for. Perhaps the single biggest technological advance behind the upsurge in electric truck sales is the arrival of the lithium-ion battery. While lead acid remains by far the dominant battery type within the electric-powered forklift market, sales of Lithium-ion forklifts have been on a sustained upward curve for some time. Although it is estimated that in the region of 90 per cent of all electric forklifts in operation throughout the world are still running on lead acid batteries, the Lithium-Ion solution has now become well established as a viable alternative. Indeed, nearly a quarter of all Toyota electric-powered forklift trucks ordered for delivery in the UK now feature Lithium-Ion battery (LiB) technology. Today, Lithium-ion is revolutionising the way that some companies operate their intralogistics processes. Lithium-ion batteries have the ability to be recharged in as little as one hour - which increases a truck’s overall availability. One hour’s charging will give in the region of 4 to 5 hours of operating time. Also, as these batteries allow for opportunity charging, trucks can be recharged anywhere by the operator during breaks in a shift or other periods of downtime. As a result, there is no need to swap batteries - so dedicated charging rooms and spare batteries are not necessary. Hydrogen fuel cells are also emerging as another viable alternative to lead acid batteries. At the present time, Hydrogen only becomes financially realistic where in the region of 90+ trucks are in operation at one location due to the significant investment required in hydrogen generation and storage systems, so the

potential user market is currently somewhat limited. But large fleet operators are keen to embrace the technology and Toyota Hydrogen fuel cell-powered forklifts are already operating at sites across the Nordic region and Europe as well as Australia. Meanwhile in the automotive sector Toyota’s hydrogen-powered Mirai is at the forefront of a new age of hydrogen fuel cell cars that deliver long distance zero-emissions driving. Of course, as with any new development, when the product matures the price will drop and there is every reason to believe hydrogen fuel cell power will be within reach of every business with a forklift fleet in the not-too-distant future. But, despite the worldwide rush to eliminate – or at least minimise - the use of fossil fuels and the myriad benefits that electric trucks offer users in terms of running costs, productivity, reduced pollution etc, it Is unlikely that we are witnessing the last days of the diesel-powered lift truck. There are currently still numerous applications, particularly where extra-heavy lifting is involved and truck capacities of 8 tonnes and over are required, where a diesel forklift remains the best option. This might not be the case in 10 years’ time though. Companies considering switching from IC- to electric-engine forklift trucks, should always discuss their options with their MHE supplier who will be able to assess the benefits of going electric for every type of operation. FIRST BOBCAT MAXCONTROL REMOTE CONTROL SYSTEM IN SPAIN Obras y Construcciones Corbera, a construction and earthmoving company based in Corbera de Llobregat (Barcelona), is the first business in Spain and one of the first in Europe, to purchase Bobcat’s new MaxControl remote control system. MaxControl is an exclusive hardware kit from Bobcat, which combined with an iOS application allows the operator to control Bobcat compact loaders remotely, using an iPhone or iPad. Obras y Construcciones Corbera was introduced to the MaxControl system by Bobcat Of, the Authorised Bobcat Dealer for the area. The company was very struck by the versatility that this application could give them thanks to the total visibility of the working space that is offers and, above all, the safety and security provided by this new way of working. This has been particularly useful in some concrete projects as the peripheral vision of the work is considerably improved by being outside the machine. MaxControl has allowed the company to carry out special jobs that require greater safety, working in confined spaces and with little visibility. The system also helps in demolition and in finishing new pavements, providing the company with more precise finishes and

in less time. MaxControl has provided greater reliability and precision when loading and unloading machines onto trailers for transfer to other sites. Obras y Construcciones Corbera is convinced that the system improves safety, a factor that is more and more important every day on the job site and offers direct benefits for both operators and employers alike. In addition, it helps to avoid damage to machines through collisions with objects, since by being outside the loader the operator can better see where they are driving. ‘IT’S LIKE DRIVING A REMOTE-CONTROLLED CAR’

“It’s fantastic, very easy to assemble and disassemble, and to use - it’s like driving a remotecontrolled car, but always with great care,” says Eduard Heredia, Manager of Obras y Construcciones Corbera. He continues: “In just a few hours I had mastered the operation of the loader through my own iPhone - I would definitely highlight the safety aspects. The MaxControl system is very useful and versatile as I can use it with the bucket or with a variety of Bobcat

BULK MATERIALS HANDLING attachments to carry out different tasks safely such as clearing with a brush or using a wheel saw. Also, I only have a Bobcat tracked loader at the moment, but in the future I might buy a skid-steer model and I will be able to work with the MaxControl with both machines.” VERY EASY TO INSTALL, WITH ALL THE DETAILS ON YOUR MOBILE PHONE SCREEN

It is very easy to connect to the MaxControl system - the user simply puts the receiver on top of the loader’s cab and the emergency stop button on the back of the machine - both have a built-in magnet for quick placement. The engine cover can then be opened and the cables for the system hooked up to the machine’s diagnostic connector. The next step is to download the MaxControl application on the mobile phone and once downloaded, the Bobcat dealer can give the customer access to the MaxControl kit. After these steps are completed, the operator simply connects to the wi-fi system of the machine and can start operating it remotely. Once installed, the operator can access the main machine information on the screen of the mobile or tablet, while the intuitive controls allow them to operate both the machine and attachments with ease. This allows errors to be easily identified thanks to the maintenance codes that appear directly on the mobile device. And machine diagnostics are available that communicate all the important information about the carrier and access can be given to the machine to multiple end users, allowing for a quick change of operators. TRANSFORMING TWO PERSON JOBS INTO SOLO TASKS

On a recent project using MaxControl, Obras y Construcciones Corbera carried out filling in work with earth in a large underground area of about 1000 m3 under a school yard to protect the safety of the students. Mounted on a Bobcat T590 track loader, the MaxControl was used to drive the machine remotely through a small opening and down an underground corridor to the filling area. Thanks to MaxControl, any blind spots were eliminated, with full visibility at all times and increased awareness of the surrounding environment. This work was therefore carried out in a couple of weeks with the T590, much more quickly

than it would have been by alternative methods using smaller machinery. RESULTING IN INCREASED SAFETY, COMFORT, QUALITY, SPEED AND PROFITABILITY

In remote areas with little connectivity, such as this underground passage, the system keeps the operator registered for 12 hours of operation and works in a range of up to 100 m. As for the Bobcat T590 compact loader, it is ideal for this type of task with very limited space, thanks to its compact size, its manoeuvrability, its stability, providing excellent power, breakout force and lifting capacity for handling the fill material. It combines this with high specifications, shorter cycles and faster turns. Bobcat continues as always to offer new solutions, integrating products and technologies for the market, entering new categories and to promote innovations based on meeting customer needs, and the new MaxControl system is undoubtedly the latest proof of this commitment. ever since we moved into secondary coding with our now flagship product, the ICE Vulcan, in 2014. Having spent the intervening years building our expertise in print & apply and honing our technology, we have developed a tertiary offering that is unmatched by anything else available on the market today” says Clearmark’s Technical Managing Director, Chris Simpson. The launch of ICE Vector is timely, with warehouses accelerating their investment in intelligent automation, mitigating supply chain issues (exacerbated by Brexit and the pandemic). As more products flow through supply chains at speed, warehouses call for smarter, faster, self-reliant systems to meet demand. The ICE Vector Pallet Labelling System promises to deliver an attractive ROI for any high-throughput operation looking to automate its pallet labelling process, from food, beverage and pharmaceutical factories, to supply chain and logistics operations. Powerful, reliable performance and seamless integration with factory warehouse management systems (WMS) are the bedrock of the ICE Vector

SPECIAL FEATURE advantage. The ICE Vector is powered by the ICE Vulcan print engine – the fastest in its class. With a compact footprint of just 1125mm x 875mm and operational speeds of up to 100 pallets an hour, it can perform up to four label applications per pallet, with two adjacent sides to conform to GS1 specifications for SSCC pallet labelling or three sides for customer specific applications. The ICE Vector is designed as a robust, fully enclosed system, thanks to a pneumatic guard protecting the print engine from dust and environmental conditions. Optimum conditions within the enclosure are maintained via a thermostatically controlled heater (as standard) with the doors only opening at the point when the ICE Vector is ready to label. With a label arm reach of 650mm out of the enclosure via a sturdy 2 axis cartesian guided motion control system, label placement is accurate and repeatable on a wide range of pallet configurations. This ICE Vector is capable of printing at up to three times faster than rival print engines and thanks to Intelligent Motion™ technology, which enables precise automatic control of the labels and ribbon feed, this translates to the removal of 80% of wear parts compared to traditional pallet labelers. The result is an incredibly low maintenance solution with the lowest cost of ownership and gives greater reliability of equipment, without traditional service intervals. With warehouses becoming more sophisticated, system communications are having to follow suit. The ICE Vector is simple to integrate with a WMS system in an extensive range of onboard data-protocols, including both Zebra and SATO. The machine features two CLARiTY™ touchscreen interfaces. Label and ribbon changes can be executed efficiently thanks to the internal interface and the external interface gives full access to machine settings and performance information of the ICE Vector’s interface with the line PLC. Additionally, the screen can also be viewed remotely using a networked PC and standard web browser. As well as helping to mitigate coding errors and meeting retail and regulatory traceability requirements, this automated data management of SSCC codes approach can enhance Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).

The Government’s recently announced capital allowance incentive for investments in new machinery and plant is providing further impetus for automation. Between now and March 2023, British manufacturers investing in qualifying plant and machinery assets will be able to benefit from 130% corporate tax relief (usually 18%) allowing the financial case to stack up. With the introduction of the ICE Vector, Clearmark now has a coding solution for all three packaging types: primary, secondary and tertiary. Primary coding applications are served by the ICE Zodiac Hawk family and the ICE Viper Plus, while the ICE Viper Plus, ICE Vulcan, ICE Torus and Zebra systems address secondary coding. “We found that customers wanted to buy their pallet labeller from the same company that supplied their case labeller and thermal transfer overprinter – mainly for commonality of parts and operation familiarity. It has long been our goal to offer coding solutions for all of these applications, but we had to be sure we could match the performance that Clearmark is known for in primary and secondary coding applications. With the ICE Vector, we believe we have achieved exactly that,” explains Chris. For more information about the Vector, visit www. clearmark.uk/vector
