STAINLESS STEEL BUTTERFLY VALVE The Series 486 inflatable seated butterfly valve from Posi-flate features a fully machined 316L stainless steel housing. The single piece disc and shaft is available in a number of materials including 316L stainless steel and Hastelloy. The disc may be polished to a mirror finish or coated with PTFE, nylon or other high-performance coating. The stainless steel valve is ideal for powders, granules, slurries and liquids and is available in sizes 2” (50mm) to 20” (500mm). Typical applications include loading and unloading of process material, sterile air control, and outlet valves for storage containers or hoppers. It is suitable for many applications, such as food, chemical and pharmaceutical. The inflatable seat design of the Posi-flate butterfly valve provides a better seal by utilizing air pressure to expand the seat against the disc, providing more sealing area and an even pressure distribution against the disc every time. The seat automatically compensates for wear when it inflates against the disc, extending valve life considerably. Because the Posi-flate disc only makes casual contact with the seat during opening and closing, torque requirements are substantially lower. This ease of movement also allows the disc to come to a perfect 90-degree position every time. Additionally, the smooth profile of the disc helps material flow easier and reduces build-up. For unique fail-safe monitoring, a pressure switch can be utilized to verify a perfect seal. BOBCAT ‘ONE TOUGH ANIMAL’ CLEANS HUGE MONDELLO BEACH A new Bobcat T76 track loader equipped with a Sand Cleaner attachment has proved to be the winning combination for this famous Sicilian beach The Bobcat SC200 Sand Cleaner attachment, mounted on a new Bobcat T76 R-Series compact track loader, has proved to be an unparalleled combination for cleaning one of the most beautiful and widest coasts in Italy: the Sicilian beach of Mondello (PA). Offering 1500 m of very fine white sand, the Mondello beach is a well-known and sought-after destination on the national and international scene. The very high performance T76 compact track loader, combined with this new Bobcat attachment specifically for beach cleaning, was recently purchased by the Mondello Italo Belga company, which has been taking care of the Mondello area for more than a hundred years, helping to preserve the uniqueness and the original splendour of this location. With the completion of land reclamation operations in the early 1900s, the Mondello Italo Belga company transformed this coastal district into a renowned seaside resort, based around the long white sand beach. The work on Mondello beach is important to the local economy as it is the only sandy beach in Palermo, a crowded city which is only 11 km away, meaning it is one of the most coveted beaches by Palermo people as well as by tourists from all over the world.

MONDELLO BEACH REQUIRES STATE-OF-THE-ART EQUIPMENT

Dedicated to continuous development of the area, Mondello Italo Belga company also wanted to adapt its equipment to support soil protection. “The choice of the Sand Cleaner to protect the beach is linked to the desire to achieve a technological evolution in the equipment,” says Antonio Gristina, CEO of Mondello Italo Belga company. “The maintenance of Mondello beach never stops. To avoid the creation of dunes and to remove organic debris carried by the wind and tides, maintenance is required throughout the year, before, during and after the seasonal peak. The investment we have made combines the company’s interest in being able to carry out the cleaning work in a more rational and advantageous way, with the environmental and sustainability needs of the area.” The decision to purchase the Bobcat Sand Cleaner, despite the fact that the company already had other suitable means to carry out this work, is primarily due to the need to ensure a thorough cleaning of the beach and therefore also of the sea. The machine and attachment are used continuously at the beginning of the season and during the entire summer period, passing on a daily basis between the rows of umbrellas, thanks to the compact dimensions of the T76 loader and its high manoeuvrability. Mr Genova, responsible for the maintenance of the Mondello beach for over 50 years now, and therefore an expert in the most suitable means for doing this, was a strong supporter of the purchase of the T76 loader combined with the Bobcat Sand Cleaner. “As soon as we understood the potential of this vehicle in terms of speed of work and saving of resources, we chose to replace our existing machines,” says Mr Genova. “To be fully convinced, we also tested competing proposals. None of them managed to match the performance of

ON THE COVER the Bobcat solution. It is a true masterpiece to ensure optimal cleaning of a beach 1500 m long and more than 40 m wide. Another important advantage for us is that, thanks to the rubber tracks, the T76 track loader can travel and circle on the road so it does not require dedicated transport on a vehicle from our warehouse to the beach.” BOBCAT SC200 SAND CLEANER - FASTER AND DEEPER CLEANING

Capable of covering a large area of 15,000 m² per hour, the Bobcat Sand Cleaner can quickly sift sand and retains even the smallest waste such as cigarette butts, caps, pieces of glass, wood splinters and algae. The waste is accumulated in its integrated 350 l collection bucket, which can be unloaded directly into trucks or bins, thanks to the hydraulic opening system of the bucket and the arms of the compact loader on which the attachment is mounted. It is a very effective sand cleaning tool with an adjustable depth from 0 to 20 cm, and equipped with interchangeable grids with four mesh sizes (5x5,10x10, 15x15 and 20x20 mm), to collect waste and debris of all sizes. The Bobcat SC200 Sand Cleaner does not require any maintenance and is extremely easy and quick to mount on the T76 thanks to the Bob-Tach attachment system. Available on all Bobcat compact track and skid-steer loaders, the Bob-Tach system allows them to be quickly and safely combined with all Bobcat attachments, ensuring versatility and efficiency. Bobcat attachments also have a ‘Plug & Play’ design, a unique technology that allows an exchange of multiple information using a single electrical cable connected to and operated via a panel from the comfort of the cab on the loader. The attachments are equipped with an Attachment Control Device (ACD) that allows them to be immediately recognised by the carrier machine and therefore ensures instant communication with them. THE R-SERIES T76 STAGE V TRACK LOADER

Utilising the qualities of the new T76 as a tool carrier, the Mondello Italo Belga company is able to manage not only the wide beach, but also other aspects of the business. As Antonio Gristina confirms: “The fact that the T76 loader can be used for different needs thanks to the interchange of attachments represents for us an optimization of costs and therefore an important saving. Its strength and operational capabilities allow us to use it to keep

the grounds of the properties clean, as well carrying out site works and for lifting and carrying materials. Last but not least, the advanced technology in the Bobcat T76 loader allows us to access Industry 4.0 developments.” The T76 R-Series loader, launched in October 2020 as part of the revolutionary Next is Now programme, offers significant advantages compared to the previous generation machines, in terms of productivity, reliability and durability, without neglecting the increased operator comfort of the machine. The loader has been improved with larger track coverage allowing for a smoother ride. The increased stability, coupled with improved hydraulic efficiency, allows for class-leading push and breakout forces and increased lifting capacity. The new cast steel boom construction makes the T76 loader 20% stronger and the increased lift height makes it easier to unload materials into high-sided trucks. To make the most of the potential of the T76 loader, Mondello Italo Belga company chose to add various options for the machine: for example, the cab has transparent sides, equipped with side protections without mesh to increase visibility; the 7-inch touch screen display, that also shows the view from the rear view camera, provides detailed information on the machine and the associated attachment, and the undercarriage with 5-Link torsion suspension which reduces vibrations and material loss. MOBILE SANITARY IBC UNLOADINGCONVEYING SYSTEM A new Flexicon Mobile Sanitary IBC Unloading and Conveying System transfers contaminationsensitive bulk solid materials from Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) to downstream processes, dustfree. The discharger frame is mounted on castors for in-plant mobility, while a hinged sub-frame supporting a surge hopper, flexible screw conveyor and support mast can pivot down for manoeuvring through doorways and low-headroom areas. The IBC frame is forklifted onto receiving cups, which position the IBC outlet onto the surge hopper inlet. Material flowing from the IBC into the charging adapter of a flexible screw conveyor is propelled at an incline, and discharged into elevated process equipment and storage vessels. The conveyor handles a broad range of free- and non-free-flowing bulk solids ranging from pellets to sub-micron powders with no separation of blended products. The flexible screw is the only moving part contacting material, and is driven by an electric motor positioned beyond the discharge point, preventing material contact with seals. Ready to plug in and run, the mobile unit can

serve multiple functions throughout the plant. It can be rolled to a cleaning station where a lower cleanout cap on the conveyor tube can be removed to flush the smooth interior surfaces with steam, water or cleaning solutions, or to fully remove the flexible screw for cleaning and inspection. The system is available in carbon steel with durable industrial coating, with stainless steel material contact surfaces, or in all-stainless steel (shown) finished to industrial, food, dairy or pharmaceutical standards. Flexicon also manufacture other configurations of IBC and bulk bag dischargers as well as tubular cable conveyors, flexible screw conveyors, pneumatic conveying systems, bulk bag conditioners, bulk bag fillers, bag dump stations, drum/box/container tippers, drum fillers, weigh batching and blending systems, and engineered plant-wide bulk handling systems with automated controls. KEY TECHNOLOGY INTRODUCES NEW AUTO DIVERTER FOR VIBRATORY CONVEYORS Key Technology, a member of the Duravant family of operating companies, introduces its new and improved Auto Diverter for its popular Iso-Flo® vibratory conveyors. Ideal for bulk product and packaging distribution lines, the Auto Diverter splits the product flow to two downstream systems, such as digital sorters or packaging machines, and changes the proportion of product going to each of the two lanes as needed. This patented Auto Diverter features a stronger diverter blade, an improved pneumatic hold-down system and more to achieve longer equipment life and greater accuracy for better performance of downstream systems. “Vibratory conveying equipment, including diverters, take a beating during routine operation. Product moves through shakers with immense force over long periods of time. For that reason, robust automatic diverters are challenging to design – most equipment manufacturers won’t even try,” said Rudy Sanchez, Process Systems Product Development Manager at Key. “We did a lot of research and testing to develop a new diverter system that improves reliability and extends the life of this unit in even the most demanding production environments. Our Auto Diverter is a very unique solution.” Suitable for dry, frozen and wet applications, the Auto Diverter can handle virtually any free-flowing food product including fruits and vegetables such as cut and whole potatoes and cut and whole corn, as well as nuts, candies, snacks and more. Available for beds up to 1830mm (72 inches) wide, it can be equipped with a blade up to 1200mm (47 inches) long. The redesigned Auto Diverter features a stronger, thicker diverter blade for better product handling and equipment longevity. Now bolted, instead of welded, the blade can be easily removed for cleaning and maintenance. The new pneumatic hold-down system anchors the blade to the surface of the bed to withstand a greater amount of product force without shifting from its programmed position. For better product control, each diverter is customized to guide product away from bed corners and features a blade that matches the product depth To accurately divide the product stream, the Auto Diverter’s pneumatic actuator moves the blade precisely into each position needed. Using only the controls and no manual adjustments, an operator can split the two product outfeeds and implement quick and easy adjustments including blocking an entire lane for maintenance of downstream equipment. Featuring fullyintegrated and optimized controls, the Auto Diverter can be operated locally at the user interface. Additionally, it can be programmed to be controlled via a plantwide network and/or automatically controlled by downstream equipment.

Designed to maximize sanitation, the Auto Diverter features scalloped welds throughout its stainless-steel frame and blade. The actuator is positioned underneath the conveyor bed to help maintain food safety. Compared to traditional diverters, where an operator must manually reach over the shaker bed to reposition the blade, the Auto Diverter improves operator safety and ergonomics while reducing the risk of foreign material introduction to the product stream.

High Efficiency Drying or Cooling of Bulk Solids The Bella dryer/cooler offers thermal efficiencies to 80 percent or better because air flows around material while it is suspended in the weightless zone. The result is a more consistent material.

BULK MATERIALS HANDLING

INVESTMENT IN AUTOMATED HANDLING AND STORAGE BRINGS A HOST OF BENEFITS FOR UK’S LARGEST INDEPENDENT WINE STORE At The Park - the UK’s largest independent wine bottling and storage facility - the introduction of a fleet of automated reach trucks and Radioshuttle technology supplied by Toyota, has improved throughput efficiency, reduced labour costs and helped to overcome the problems associated with the increasingly difficult task of attracting and retaining qualified and proficient forklift operators and other warehouse personnel. Following a strategic review of its drinks, manufacturing and distribution facility in Bristol, Accolade Wines – a leading global wine-making company whose portfolio of market-leading brands includes such popular labels as Hardys, Echo Falls, Banrock Station and Kumala – set about reconfiguring the site as a fully-automated contract beverage production and packing unit. Located at the mouth of the River Severn, the facility – which is now known as The Park - has been transformed into a fully automated operation capable of supporting future growth and reducing labour costs while delivering a complete drinks solution for the European beverage sector. The Park’s General Manager, Richard Lloyd, comments: “This investment, coupled with others, has given us a phenomenal scale to offer a range of services to other drinks companies with whom we have synergies. By working in partnership with someone that can handle their logistics, packing and warehousing needs, our clients can focus their energy on creating brands. The Park, handles every aspect of their fulfillment operation.” The extra volume provided by The Park has been welcomed by the UK and European drinks industry. “More than 40 per cent of all the wine that arrives in Britain is estimated to be brought into the country in bulk tanks before bottling for the simple reason that it is possible to fit close to two and a half times the amount into a shipping container if the wine is stored in a bulk tank rather than bottles,” explains Richard Lloyd. “With the UK’s existing contract bottlers either at, or close-to capacity and the amount of wine shipped this way only likely to increase, the arrival of The Park is good news for the beverage sector,” he adds. Almost half of the total sum spent on redeveloping The Park was invested in automating key aspects of the site’s empty bottle storage system and upgrading the manually-operated reach truck fleet that serves the site’s high bay finished goods warehouse. Toyota Material Handling planned and delivered 20

Bulk Solids Today

the project and supplied the manual forklifts, VNA forklifts, automated reach trucks and the Radioshuttle technology that is at the heart of this ultra-efficient handling and storage solution. Eight Toyota Radioshuttles operate within The Park’s high-density empty bottle storage system. The load carriers automatically place or retrieve palletised loads of empty glass wine (and, of course, other beverage) bottles within the racking. In simple terms, they shuttle pallets of bottles backwards and forwards within the racking, allowing them to be loaded and unloaded to and from the storage cube by the automated Toyota reach trucks in a first-in, first-out (FIFO) pattern. For optimum flexibility each shuttle can be moved between lanes within the racking as required. In essence, palletised loads of empty glass bottles arrive at The Park from various suppliers on curtainsided lorries. The curtainsiders are unloaded using manually-operated counterbalance forklifts which deliver the pallets to an allocated drop-down position within the in-bound marshaling area. Once incoming pallets have been deposited within the goods-in zone an order is triggered and the fully automated reach trucks are sent to collect loads in a pre-arranged sequence and deliver the empty bottles to the in-bound face of the high-density rack system. Automated reach trucks place pallets on to one of the Radioshuttles which then delivers the pallet to its designated position within the storage system. The empty bottles are stored in the high-density Radioshuttle system until such time as they are needed in the bottling plant, at which point an order is created for the type of SKU required and a Radioshuttle is instructed to retrieve an appropriate pallet and deliver it to the waiting automated reach truck. The automated reach truck delivers the empty bottles directly to The Park’s production area. Once bottles have been filled, finished loads are taken from the bottling plant by the automated reach trucks and deposited P&D stations within the high bay finished goods store before being put-away by the Toyota VNA trucks. One of the main drivers behind the decision to automate elements of the intralogistics process at The Park was the fact that companies across the European logistics sector are finding it increasingly tough to attract and retain qualified and proficient warehouse personnel –forklift operators in particular. The automated reach trucks supplied by Toyota undertake every type of task that would be expected

BULK MATERIALS HANDLING

of traditional manually-operated models. Originally 26 Toyota RAE160 automated reach trucks were acquired for operation at The Park but such has been the success of the system and, with throughput rising at the site, a further three machines have been ordered. The trucks are part of Toyota’s Autopilot series of operatorfree materials handling equipment that also includes counterbalanced trucks, powered pallet trucks and heavy-duty tow tractors. Safety is a feature of all Autopilot products and, with built-in scanners and obstacle detection units preventing collisions, the machines can operate in the same area as manual workers and other materials handling equipment. The trucks at The Park are controlled by Toyota’s inhouse-designed Order Manager software. Capable of working as a standalone or communications layer with most WMS and production systems, Order Manager tracks goods storage, orders, traffic and flow. In addition to the obvious saving in labour costs that opting for a fleet of automated reach trucks has delivered, other benefits include: reduced damage to goods, racking and trucks; greater picking accuracy; and more efficient use of the available storage space. Given the scale and complexity of the project, integrating the Toyota AGVs and Radioshuttle units to The Park’s existing WMS and conveyor systems was challenging, as John Hobbs, Toyota Project Manager – Logistics Solutions, explains: “A lot of integration was required to automate what had originally been done manually. Several different systems had to be brought together and made to read and understand the messages that were being sent. In other words, we had to be sure that messages were going back and forth correctly between the client’s WMS and the system that controls the new hardware.”

The project went live in June 2021 and it is estimated that when the financial benefits accruing from the site’s improved throughput efficiency are added to the reduced cost of the wage bill that the automated handling technology delivers, The Park’s total annual cost saving will be extremely significant. Richard Lloyd comments: “With automation costs decreasing and becoming more available with better paybacks, we were very aware of the importance of embracing the technology but, at the same time, we were also conscious of the need to invest wisely to ensure that our automated handling systems deliver maximum impact. We have to remain cost competitive and keep driving productivity forward, but won’t invest in automation that will become obsolete in three years’ time because demand has changed.” Toyota’s John Hobbs adds: “The growing pressure to make the most of every square foot of storage capacity along with the fact that experienced workers are becoming increasingly difficult and costly to employ, means warehouse automation is now a highly attractive intralogistics option for companies across the beverage sector. “As The Park demonstrates so clearly, automating those aspects of a wine warehouse’s operation that follow a predictable pattern makes a lot of sense – particularly since relatively recent developments in automation technology have seen the emergence of flexible and scalable products that deliver a rapid return-on-investment by driving productivity, saving costs and improving on-site safety.” Toyota Material Handling has successfully delivered more than 270 automated projects featuring over 1,000 automated guided vehicles across Europe. RECYCLING & WASTE MANAGEMENT

INNOVATIVE ZS-B MEGAFEED SIDE FEEDER MAKES PLASTICS RECYCLING MARKEDLY MORE ECONOMICAL With the goal of making recycling of lightweight, high-volume fiber and flake recyclate much more economical and, in some cases even possible, Coperion has developed a new version of its ZS-B side feeder. Using the innovative ZS-B MEGAfeed, plastic recyclate with a bulk density under 200 kg/m³, long considered intake-limited and thus not worth recycling, can be reliably fed in large quantities into Coperion’s ZSK twin screw extruder and be concurrently recycled and compounded. The ZS-B side feeder’s novel design makes it possible to feed very high rates of fiber and flakes, such as PA, PE, PET, and PP. As a result, the ZSK twin screw extruder’s high capacity can be fully exploited when the ZS-B MEGAfeed is used. Very high throughputs in both mechanical and chemical recycling of post-industrial and post-consumer waste are achieved. INCREASED THROUGHPUT IN NUMBERS

With a ZSK 58 Mc18 twin screw extruder, the throughput increase and thus the potential of the new ZS-B MEGAfeed becomes very clear. When

22

Bulk Solids Today

recycling PA fibers with a bulk density of ~40-50 kg/m3, throughputs of 70 kg/h were previously achieved using conventional equipment. When the PA fibers were fed into the ZSK extruder using the ZS-B MEGAfeed, throughputs increased about fourteenfold to 1,000 kg/h. Similar results were achieved recycling carbon fibers with a bulk density of ~50-70 kg/m3; in this case, throughputs increased from 50 kg/h to 2,500 kg/h using the ZS-B MEGAfeed. When recycling PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) flakes, throughputs increased from 50 kg/h to 700 kg/h, and from 80 kg/h to 1,300 kg/h with multilayer film flakes.

RECYCLING & WASTE MANAGEMENT

KEY TO ECONOMICAL RECYCLING OF A WIDE VARIETY OF PLASTICS

Plastics previously considered not recyclable are becoming a valuable raw material using the new Coperion ZS-B MEGAfeed. For example, PCR flakes or recyclate from carbon fiber-reinforced plastics can now be fed into the ZSK extruder at high feed rates and recycled economically. In the case of mechanical upcycling, upstream processes necessary for compounding, such as compacting, melting and agglomeration, are completely eliminated using the ZS-B MEGAfeed technology. In this recycling process, flakes and fibers can be fed directly into the ZSK extruder, where they are melted, compounded, devolatilized, and filtered in a single step. In so doing, both investment costs and energy consumption drop. The production process becomes significantly more efficient. Moreover, the thermal product stress is reduced and recyclate quality increases. Even when recycling PET, the feed rate is no longer a limiting factor. With the ZS-B MEGAfeed, PET flakes and fibers can be fed into the ZSK twin screw extruder in large quantities with no pre-drying or crystallizing, where they can be processed with the highest degree of profitability.

The ZS-B MEGAfeed can also feed large quantities of post-consumer waste, adding appreciable value to the chemical recycling process with the ZSKs. ZSK throughput rates are very high with the ZS-B MEGAfeed. Preheating of the recyclate via mechanical energy input of the twin screws thus becomes even more economical for further processing in the reactor. Existing Coperion extruders can be retrofitted with ZS-B MEGAfeed technology to greatly expand their spectrum of applications and increase their throughput rates. Marina Matta, Team Leader of Process Technology Engineering Plastics at Coperion, is enthusiastic about the latest Coperion development: “We’re convinced that the new ZS-B MEGAfeed will play a pioneering role in plastics recycling. In particular, plastic fibers, which will be available in ever increasing quantities from textiles, had always been considered hardly recyclable until now. With the ZS-B MEGAfeed, this is now possible. Far more plastic waste can be recycled – and much more efficiently. For the plastics industry, the ZS-B MEGAfeed is another step forward on the path to a circular economy, and we are very proud of that.” Bulk Solids Today

RECYCLING & WASTE MANAGEMENT

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING: IS YOUR BUSINESS SUPPORTING THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY IN THE FIGHT AGAINST SINGLE USE PLASTICS? Today, sustainability is more important than ever. In fact, a recent survey showed that 61 per cent of consumers have actively reduced their use of single-use plastics. In turn, this has the ability to drive trends. In 2020, the UK placed 4.9 million metric tonnes of plastic on the market. Out of this, 3.7 million metric tonnes became waste. In order to reduce plastic pollution, companies across the nation are now working to incorporate circular economy solutions into their business plans. The circular economy is a sustainable model of reusing, repairing, and recycling materials as many times as possible. In comparison to a linear system, circularity allows wasted materials to have a new life or to be recycled back into new products. As a result, waste is captured and the need for raw materials is alleviated. Here, we will explore some of the UK companies leading the way with sustainable packaging solutions. Using these examples, how can your business respond to the fight against single use plastics and align with consumer trends? L’ORÉAL PARIS

L’Oréal Group is leading the way for sustainable packaging within the cosmetics industry. In collaboration with Paboco, the company has created a paper bottle using sustainably sourced paper. If used en masse, this has the potential to significantly reduce plastic waste. In addition to this, the environmental profile of 96 per cent of all new products launched by the company has improved in 2020. L’Oreal has also committed to using 100 per cent reusable, recyclable, and compostable plastic packaging by 2025. As part of the L’Oréal for the Future campaign, 24

Bulk Solids Today

the company has pledged to become sustainable by 2030. This includes the preservation of natural resources, management of water sustainability, fighting climate change, respecting biodiversity, and banning testing on animals. TESCO

Tesco, one of the leading supermarket brands across the nation, is also making significant contributions towards sustainability. As well as ditching single-use plastic bags, the supermarket is promoting a circular economy within its Own Brand products, such as bin bags. This has reduced plastic sold throughout the company. In fact, over 1 billion pieces of plastic have been saved since this sustainability campaign began. Also, since 2018, Tesco has removed 11,400 tonnes of hard-to-recycle materials from its Own Brand packaging. The future looks bright for this company. It is committed to making 100 per cent of the paper and board used in its packaging sustainable by 2025. In 2021, it also pledged to remove an extra 500 million pieces of plastic from its supermarkets throughout 2022. Do you think Tesco will achieve this goal?

RECYCLING & WASTE MANAGEMENT WADDINGTON EUROPE

Waddington Europe, a leading producer of rigid plastic packaging, is committed to sustainable packaging innovation. Its Eco Blend and Eco Blend Pura ranges, as well as being fully recyclable, are made with 100 per cent post-industrial and postconsumer recycled content. In recent months, the company has also designed an innovative strawberry punnet. This product uses raised based cushion technology that removes the need for an extra layer of protective bubble wrap and any adhesive. As a result, Waddington’s strawberry punnet requires no glue, and it can be easily recycled straight back into food-grade rPET. LUSH COSMETICS

LUSH Cosmetics prioritises sustainability throughout the production process. In fact, 66 per cent of all products sold each year are naked and require no packaging at all, saving 4,275 tonnes of plastic throughout its stores. This includes a number of popular products, such as bath bombs and shampoo bars. In recent years, LUSH has designed its first piece of carbon-positive packaging. The cork pots, ideal for naked shampoo bars, are reusable and biodegradable. Throughout the production process, each cork pot retains 33 times its own weight in carbon dioxide.

LUSH Cosmetics has also introduced sustainable schemes. The Bring It Back scheme allows customers to return used packaging in exchange for credit towards their next purchase. In addition to this, the Fresh Face Mask scheme gives customers a free face mask every time they recycle used packaging at one of the LUSH stores. ASDA

Last and certainly not least, ASDA is leading the way with forward-thinking packaging solutions. Since 2007, ASDA has reduced the weight of their packaging by 27%, and the supermarket is committed to making all of its packaging fully recyclable by 2025. ASDA has introduced a packaging-free store in Leeds. This gives customers the opportunity to refill their own reusable containers with groceries, including pasta, cereal, dog food, and laundry detergents. The scheme is set to be expanded to other locations throughout the UK. TO SUMMARISE

Sustainability is trending. Consumer behaviours have incentivised businesses to create sustainable solutions to plastic pollution. From L’Oréal’s cosmetics bottle to ASDA’s free packaging zones, companies are adapting towards a more sustainable future.
