What attracted you to living and working in Abbotsford? I moved here in 1994 as a financial services employee and it immediately felt like home. Sandy and I settled in and raised our three kids in a caring community of great people, schools, parks, and facilities like our UFV, that they all attended. We are very fortunate.
List your unique selling points: It’s the fact that we bank on people that sets us apart. We think differently. We offer friendly, personal service – and no voicemail. We pride ourselves on our entrepreneurial approach to financial services and we are responsive, resourceful and realistic. We know our local markets and make decisions locally.
How has your business changed or adapted in recent years? CWB started out in 1984 at a time when many felt a Western Canadian-based bank could not succeed. Over the years we have moved from being a predominantly commercial services provider to now a full service Canadian bank. We offer a full line of services with retail products like credit cards, deposit accounts, home mortgages and loans, as well as an industry-leading rate for our Tax-Free Savings Account.
What does the future hold for your business? We have just completed our 95th consecutive profitable quarter as of January 31st, 2012. We want to continue this trend. In the strong Western economy, CWB be a key partner in leveraging opportunities in Abbotsford.
Describe the ways your business has given back to the Abbotsford community: Our branch and staff are active with many organizations and charities in Abbotsford. Through individual service clubs, boards, and associations, like Rotary, Indo Canadian Business Association, Fraser Valley Child Development Centre and others, our people help to make this a better community. We work closely with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Fraser Valley through our Greater Interest GIC and we also are active in their Bowl for Kids Sake where we have raised in excess of $10,000 over the past few years. We are United Way Gold Sponsors through employee participation, Angel Sponsors with The Crystal Gala Foundation, which raises funds for breast cancer screening, The Abbotsford Hospice, the BC Cancer Foundation, Matthew’s House and others. I personally volunteer my time with associations including the Rotary Club of Abbotsford where one of the key events is the Million Dollar Hole in One which raises money for the new Campus of Care.

Baerg, a lifelong resident of Abbotsford, is one of the founding directors for the annual run, which raises awareness about the water crisis in Africa. And Run for Water has now expanded into Calgary. As well as being a big part of the run, Baerg also participates in a wide range of sports as both a player and a coach.

Whether it be politicians, coaches, business professionals, teachers or just someone you felt makes a difference, we wanted to know their names. The readers have spoken. The following is a list of Abbotsford’s top 100 most influential people as chosen by you. The list is in no particular order.
D O R OT H Y DYC K Co-owner of Abbotsford Printing Inc. and a former Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce president and executive director of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association, Dorothy Dyck has nothing but love for her hometown. She is the past chair of the Crystal Gala Foundation (a fundraiser for breast cancer) and has served terms on the Abbotsford Police Board and the BC Police Board. Dyck’s company takes on many gratis promotional printing projects annually, both large and small. She often liaises with these groups, and volunteers on special event committees and task forces throughout the community. When she isn’t working at her business, volunteering in the community, and spending time with her family, Dorothy enjoys travelling and reading.
D AV E H O L M B E R G S R . A prominent local businessman with ties to dozens of community organizations, Dave Holmberg retired this year as president of Bobcat Country Sales. However, he still plays a huge role in the shaping of the community. Politically, he is a wellknown Liberal supporter, having worked on several campaigns for Mike de Jong. He is also chair of the Abbotsford Airport Authority. But he is perhaps best known for his generosity. Holmberg has offered financial support to many charities, most recently the Abbotsford Hospice Society. Holmberg House, a two-storey, 2,650-square-metre facility is named after his son, and honours the life and legacy of David Holmberg Jr., who passed away in March 2011 after a battle with cancer.

“To succeed… You need to find something to hold on to, something to motivate you, something to inspire you.”
TONY DORSETT
Do you have a mission statement? If yes, what is it?
What attracted you to living and working in Abbotsford?
Describe the way(s) your business has given back to the Abbotsford community:
I want to be the best I can possibly be by always learning and asking questions to understand the needs of the community and nation I live in. I want to give back as much as possible which in turn will grow me personally and professionally and make the place we live the best possible place to be.
• Where it was located on the map had some major influence as I have never lived out west or in another country before. • The biggest reason was the situation the building was in at the time I was asked to come here. I wanted to continue to grow my resume and thought this would be a great challenge for my career and future in this amazing business.
• Whether it is individual efforts of our staff or as a whole, Global Spectrum has given back to the Abbotsford Community in a number of different ways. • Global Spectrum has opened the doors to the Entertainment & Sports Centre all year round to allow the community to walk around the concourse when weather may keep them from doing it outside. This is a free service for the community. • We have volunteered at McHappy Day. • We have volunteered for Operation Red Nose, the Salvation Army, and the Food Bank. • I am on the Board for the JDRF Telus Walk to find a cure for type 1 Diabetes. • Helping to set up special events held in Old Historic Downtown Abbotsford. • Cleaning local walking trails. • Donating tickets to different organizations. • Allowing not-for-profit groups to work some of our concession stands with a portion of the proceeds going back to the organization.
What is the most important rule you follow when it comes to customer service? • We have company-wide customer service program called the ‘How You Doin’ Program’. This began in Philadelphia and now is a part of every one of our Global Spectrum managed facilities. There are ten (10) principles listed under this program with number one being customer first. • We must treat every customer like they are the most important person. • We do monthly drawings to award our part-time staff for going above and beyond to make our customer experience fantastic.
How has your business changed or adapted in recent years? • The business is becoming more interactive with the customer. Feedback is given to you a lot quicker due to social media. Customer Service is always number one and now it is not just about being good, it is about being great. • Because of the competition it is always a fight to bring in more events. I must be willing to take more risk to get the shows that fit the community but also need to make sure we are avoiding taking unnecessary risks.
What do you enjoy doing in Abbotsford during your spare time? When I have spare time I enjoy going to the gym, hanging out with some of the great people I have met here, enjoying the many great local restaurants and just relaxing at home.
What does the future hold for your business? • Global Spectrum continues to look to grow our
event schedule and become imbedded into the community. • Everyone from Vancouver to Hope will know about the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre.
How do you feel you (or your business) have influenced Abbotsford, either in the past, the present, or the future? I feel I have influenced Abbotsford to step outside the box and to become the city it strives to be which is a hub not just for those living and working here but one where people from everywhere will come to see what it has to offer.
How has your business used social media to engage customers? • Global Spectrum is very active on Facebook and Twitter. For events we do pre-sales using Facebook and also contests to engage the customer. • We also work hand in hand with our partners social media pages to help grow our business. This also includes e-mail blasts to our Cyber Club and to the Cyber Clubs of radio stations, businesses, etc.

Come in and visit us... Our living room appearance with softer lighting, music, treats and the smell of coffee makes your pet think they are at home instead of a hospital, keeping them calm and relaxed.
What attracted you to living and working in Abbotsford? Abbotsford is a vibrant, rapidly developing, multicultural community and can provide all the services of a larger center without the crowding of the big city. It is truly ‘A City in the Country’.
Describe the way(s) your business has given back to the Abbotsford community: Due to our knowledge base of exotic and wildlife species we have provided support services on these animals to Elizabeth Melnick’s Wildlife Centre, Critter Care Wildlife Centre and the SPCA. As well, we regularly provide students from Douglas College, West Coast College, Granville Business College and Abbotsford high schools an opportunity to obtain their practicum experience in veterinary medicine. Growing up here, I love the feeling of being in both the City and the Country at the same time. Abbotsford is a beautiful city to raise our family in and we appreciate the cultural diversity and strong roots within the Sikh community.
What is the most important rule you follow when it comes to customer service? Our primary goal is to meet the customer’s wireless needs. We will provide a solution that best fits their needs. We have a ‘think outside the box’ approach and provide solutions that other stores sometimes cannot.
What does the future hold for your business? We hope to have more locations open up throughout the lower mainland to increase our footprint as one of the largest Bell Authorized Dealers.
How has your business influenced Abbotsford, either in the past, the present, or the future? We are an Abbotsford-based company, our roots are firmly planted here with two locations to help serve our community. We feel we have provided a one-stop solution for customers needing wireless help, sales and advice. In the future we will continue to serve our community with excellent customer service.
How has your business given back to the Abbotsford community? For the last 5 years, we’ve been involved with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in helping to raise funds for research aimed at children living with Type 1 Diabetes. We host a fundraiser every year for this cause as it hits close to home for us. We’ve also been supporting the Kids Help Line which helps kids across Canada get access to anonymous and confidential professional counselling. Most recently we were able to provide sponsorship to the ‘My Sick Civic’ contest organized by Honda Way, the Abbotsford News and the Abbotsford Heat. This last year our focus has been on getting our 6 stores built, staffed and running. This year we would like to spend more time building our name in the local community and give back to the City of Abbotsford. We’re hoping to play a part in the upcoming local Canada Day and Vasakhi celebrations.
