Banman gives first address at Chamber of Commerce event Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News

In his first major public address since election night, mayor-elect Bruce Banman announced that he will form a city task force on economic prosperity. He was speaking to the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce’s luncheon on Thursday – a full house at the Ramada Plaza and Conference Centre. Asked later what he hopes will come out of the task force, Banman answered “jobs.” He noted how a friend drives three hours every day to and from work in Surrey, and he wants to reverse that trend. With an airport, a university, a regional hospital and other key employers, he said people should come here to work. “Abbotsford should be an economic driving force,” he said. “Abbotsford is a hub.” Banman told the audience he considers small business the backbone of the economy, and said his goal is to make Abbotsford “the friendliest city for business and for families in the world.” He said the task force would include the Chamber of Commerce, which requested the initiative from the outgoing council, with representation from the province. When a member of the audience asked whether social service providers would be included in the task force, Banman agreed they should have a place at the table. Continued on A5

An Abbotsford man attending university in Washington State has been sentenced for making sexual comments online to someone he thought was a 13-year-old girl. Duane Edward Stewart, 24, was sentenced Monday (Nov. 28) in Washington to one month in jail and 12 months of community custody (time served in the community while under strict monitoring). He was initially charged with communicating with a minor for immoral purposes, but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of felony harassment. Stewart was charged on March 31 of this year. He came to the attention of police after the

U.S. Department of Homeland Security was notified by a member of the Vancouver Police Department’s vice squad who was posing online as a 13-yearold girl. Stewart indicated that he was 19 years old and exchanged sexually explicit messages with the “girl.” Police traced the IP address of the messages to Stewart’s computer at Western Washington University (WWU) and notified Homeland Security, which in turn brought the case to the attention of the university police. Stewart had been taking general studies at WWU for two years at the time of his arrest. He grew up in Abbotsford, having graduated from W.J. Mouat Secondary.

Bill Braham and his eight-year-old American Eskimo pooch, Paka, make such a sight that they have been driven off the road twice by motorists trying to take their picture. It’s not every day that you see a dog decked out in standard biker gear – beanie helmet and goggles – cruising on the back of a motorcycle in what surely must be the ultimate “face in the wind” canine experience. But Paka lives to ride. “He goes everywhere with me,” said Braham The two draw giggles and stares no matter where they ride through the Fraser Valley. They are frequently

spotted in Aldergrove, Langley and Abbotsford – where they lived until just recently – but will go wherever the road takes them. The two first became best buddies in 2006. Braham, who is single, was looking for a pet to keep him company, and came across an online ad for an American Eskimo. The owner was in poor health and couldn’t properly look after the dog anymore. The pet was named Paka – the Inuit word for “friend.” He was living in a trailer, with not much room to frolic, and Braham couldn’t bear to leave him behind. Braham, who began riding motorcycles about 35 years ago but had taken a break, yearned to return to

two wheels. In 2007, he purchased a special-edition Kawasaki Vulcan Mean Streak. “I bought the bike because I love to ride, and I looked at the dog and said, ‘Well, I guess you’re going to have to come with me.’ ” He didn’t want Paka’s eyes to water in the wind or be hit by flying bugs or debris, so Braham purchased a pair of doggie goggles – called Doggles – at the pet store. He put them on Paka around the house until he got used to wearing them for longer periods. Braham, who works at a PVC plant in Abbotsford, crafted a special seat for Paka that consisted of a pad surrounded by an aluminum rail with Continued on A6

A young father undergoes his second round of chemo Contributor

“Todd is going for chemo.” That simple statement, exchanged between friends in September while waiting for their girls to get out of school, has sparked months of fundraising efforts within the close-knit community of Ross Elementary. Renee Barrett, mother of a small, hardworking Abbotsford family, had no idea that allowing two women at her eldest daughter’s school in on her heartbreaking news would amount to an outpouring of support over the past few months. Upon learning that Renee’s husband Todd had been diagnosed on June 23 with Stage 4 cancer, fellow parent Lara Rempel and grandparent Gloryann Houle realized the seriousness of Renee’s admission and were motivated to take action on behalf of her young family. The aggressive cancer, so prevalent the primary source is unknown, has only brought them closer together as a family. It was a wide-ranging speech that covered his own background as a fifth generation Valley resident, and numerous other topics. Banman obliquely referred to previous civic government spending decisions, suggesting he wants “... smart, prudent, intelligent fiscal management.” He spoke about the need for the city to establish a stable supply of water, and said conservation would be an important part of the plan. “I will ensure this issue will not impact our economic viability.” Banman also talked about the need for the city to grow upward, rather than outward, and said densification will make better use of existing infrastructure, and not encroach on the Agricultural Land Reserve. “If we’re going to be the city in the country, we need to save some of the country for future generations.” He suggested revisiting the city’s intention to leave the Fraser Valley Regional District, saying he did not agree with the

Abbotsford is not an island unto itself,” Banman said. He sees the city as being at a critical point in its history, and “in the right place, at the right time. “The decisions we make over the next few years will either bless us or haunt us.” Banman does not take office until Monday, Dec. 5. He got a laugh out of the crowd with his comment: “On the fifth I get sworn in, and I fully expect that on the sixth I’ll get sworn at.” Preceding Banman’s address, long-time community supporter Brian Lee of Lee’s Fine Jewelry spoke to the crowd, asking that people support Holmberg House, the new hospice facility in Abbotsford, which needs $2.5 million in donations to reach its goal of $7.5 million. Banman, who sings, told Lee that if he is able to auction the mayor’s choral talents, he will “sing for three hours at anything you want.”

FORMER OFFICER STABBED The Abbotsford Police Department is investigating the stabbing of an inmate at Pacific Institution who has been identified by media sources as Peter Hodson, a former Vancouver Police officer convicted of dealing drugs on the job. CTV News reported that Hodson’s lawyer, Vincent Michaels, said his client underwent surgery Tuesday after being stabbed in the neck by another inmate. He has since been transferred back to the prison hospital. The assault occurred just before 8 p.m. on Monday. Hodson was sentenced in September to three years in prison, after pleading guilty to trafficking marijuana in the Downtown Eastside.

COUNTERATTACK LAUNCHES The Abbotsford Police Department launches its winter Counterattack campaign this weekend. Teams of officers will begin working day and night shifts during the week and on weekends to target impaired drivers. The campaign runs throughout December and into early January. Const. Ian MacDonald said police will target busy traffic routes, as well as back roads leading to neighbouring communities.

APPEARING ON ELLEN A father and daughter from Abbotsford will have a brief appearance on the Ellen Degeneres Show on Monday, Dec. 5. Tim Rempel and his daughter Julie will be part of a segment called “Bad Paid-for Photos” in which Degeneres highlights old professional photos submitted by viewers. The pair were invited to the show after Julie sent in her dad’s graduation photo from 1978, showing him with a large afro hairstyle popular in the day. Tim and Julie flew to Los Angeles Wednesday afternoon to tape the segment on Thursday. It airs Monday at 3 and 4 p.m. in Abbotsford, depending on the network.

While it has been a “very scary, sad time,” their attitude remains positive as they rely on each other for support. “We take it one day at a time and enjoy all the family time we can. The girls are so young … they really don’t understand,” worries Renee. “We pray this one works wonders for Todd.” Renee left her job of 14 years as a care aide for Tabor Home to oversee her husband’s treatment, and Todd has been unable to return to his work with Dynamic Windows and Doors, where he has been employed since 1999. With both of them off work, Renee admits their mortgage and normal household bills have

been a huge stress, but the hardest part is watching the man she loves suffer. “He is normally so active, happy and full of energy. Since getting sick he is always in pain ... but tries to put on a brave smile every day for us.” Renee says she is extremely grateful for the help from their work, family and friends. However, Rempel and Houle are hoping that more can be done for the family. They set up a CIBC bank account this week to collect donations (Institute #010, Transit #08820, Account #87-24296, Name: Gloryann Houle TR Barrett). Houle is calling on members of the Abbotsford business community to step forward with additional fundraising suggestions. “We could use ideas. He knew it was his bike. I was just the chaffeur,” Braham said. Paka’s look wasn’t yet complete, however. He needed a helmet. Braham had a tiny beanie crafted out of fibreglass and attached the goggles to it to form one piece that easily slipped on and off. Texting case adjourned

Vikki HOPES

Abbotsford News

A sentencing hearing for an Abbotsford teacher who sent suggestive text messages to a female student has been adjourned until March 9. The hearing for Martin Careen, 51, was scheduled to take place Wednesday morning in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster, but his lawyer asked for more time to review a psychological report that was recently completed. Careen’s trial began in September 2010 and was not completed until July of this year, due to numerous delays. If the sentencing goes ahead in March, the process will have taken almost 18 months. Careen was convicted of invitation to sexual touching based on a series of text messages sent to a

17-year-old student in January 2009 when he was a teacher at St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary – a private Catholic school. Careen taught religion, history and comparative studies. At first, the texts between him and the student addressed an upcoming history exam and other school work, but they became sexual in nature. Careen denied sending the suggestive messages, saying he had left his cellphone on the kitchen table, and others in his home had access to it. Justice Terrence Schultes said at the time of his verdict that he found Careen’s defence “implausible.” The Catholic Independent Schools of Vancouver Archdiocese has banned Careen from teaching in the Catholic school system.

We’re all at the whim of the weather Chris

Bryan

My View Weather is a wondrous thing. It’s no wonder people talk about it all the time. Last Monday night it was the wind, blowing like the bejeezus, making the rain a weapon. At our house, it was like someone pelting pebbles against the windows and siding, and I slept nary a wink. Riding my bike to work last week, the headwind was a cursed foe. Muscles ached as I worked the pedals. Walking would have been faster. Yet a tailwind is a joy, like being propelled by a benevolent hand. Few things affect our moods like weather. Music may be a close second, but the elements and their whims have an uncanny ability to take us from agony to bliss, and all the stops in between. For those who care to stop and enjoy, it can bless us with wonder.

Two Fridays ago, a massive gust blew through our area, lasting about five minutes. I was in my office at the time, facing a wall of windows. In what seemed mere moments, the sky turned from grey to a roaring river of fluttering colour. It was pure inundation, like a swirling murmuration of starlings feathered with gold, copper and bronze. The nearby cottonwoods seemed eager to show their winter bones. And then, as quickly as it started, there were just a few stray leaves. Then nothing. It was awesome. I had never seen anything like it. A child would have known what to do in this whirlwind. It called for giggles, a dance with nature as wind was made flesh. And just as weather amazes, it energizes and calms. With its cool touch, as we step out of our muggy fall homes, it invigorates. In fall, as true West Coast weather takes hold, it provides a backdrop for comfort. While the outside world is dark and deep with cloud, in black and tattered shrouds of ash across the sky, away from the steady downpour we retreat to blankets, tea, books and

Years later, on a Utah desert highway, paranoid, trying to remember if rubber tires provide safety from electrocution. our behalf. In winter, the snow brings delight. Always best when it arrives in evening, before thoughts turn to morning commutes, when we are warm at home, watching it drift beneath the street lamps. The city is quiet, the blanket of white softens the canvas, simplifies, purifies the landscape, blurring the lines between yard, sidewalk and street as people walk down the road, pulling a child on a sled, dust off a pair of crosscountry skis, turn their driveway into a toboggan run. And of course, there is always the joy of the sun. Even before dark winter departs, we are granted those days of bliss when it warms our cheeks, giving our moods, our entire days, a lift. And in time, next spring, there will be a day when we emerge from our homes wearing something light, just a shirt, perhaps. It is neither too hot, nor too cold. But just right. And for a moment, we forget about the weather completely. Chris Bryan is editor of the Burnaby and New West NewsLeader, Black Press sister papers of The Abbotsford News.

letters Service to the city

Re: “Thinking needs to change” (Neal Diamond, Nov. 22). What’s wrong with “retired school teachers, university professors and pubic service employees” running for council? They are people who have served Abbotsford, know the system and, whether they’re right or not, have a vision for the city. And I notice you said nothing about Henry Braun, coming in an impressive second after long-time champion of Abbotsford, Patricia

Ross. Mr. Braun has been active in the community for many years, quietly supporting Abbotsford in different ways. His business acumen will be an enormous asset amongst the “teachers and professors.” Experience and knowledge is an excellent combination for a city that’s growing bigger all the time. Next election, will we see your name on the ballot? Or just another letter of complaint? Shannon Jordan

HOLIDAY HOURS NOV. 28 - DEC. 23

No blue boxes

I recently visited my motherin-law in Abbotsford and was disappointed to hear the city doesn’t have a blue box recycling program. My mother-in-law said she doesn’t recycle because of the inconvenience of having to drive and pick up and purchase bags each week. I called the city and told them I thought this is a deterrent for people to recycle and was told that actually it’s more of an incentive because “people recycle more when they don’t have to sort things.” I believe this to be untrue. In Victoria we have a blue box program and all you need to sort

is paper from plastic which isn’t too complicated and on recycling day every house has two to six blue bins out. Sorting paper from plastic is effortless (as long as you have one bin for both) compared to driving each week to pick up bags. I would love to see someone look into the effectiveness of your recycling program and get the residents’ input on how effective they think it is as well. Obviously, people living in condos and townhouses don’t need to worry about this because they have big industrial recycling bins, I imagine. Kristina Andersen

Abbotsford does know how to celebrate

This letter is in response to Myron Neville’s letter “More celebration, not less.” Mr. Neville concludes that “Abbotsford should find every excuse it can to hold community celebrations.” He backs it up with the celebrations other cities hold, and that there is no laughter in Abbotsford. My questions are: Is it really true that Abbotsford does not celebrate? Is it really true that Abbotsford is out of step with the times, just because there are

allegedly no community celebrations? It is true that Halloween is a time for celebration? Abbotsford’s being in step with the times cannot be measured by its form of celebrating. I think Abbotsford does know how to celebrate, just not on the streets. Abbotsford allows all kinds of cultures and ethnicities to celebrate in their own way. Being out of step with the times will definitely not

Help Portrait Abbotsford Kelsey KLASSEN Contributor

Almost 600 participants and 100 volunteers are expected for the second annual Help Portrait Abbotsford event. Staged in more than 50 countries on the same day, a team of photographers, makeup artists and graphic designers style, shoot, edit and print free portraits onsite for people facing financial struggles. “We’re trying to instil self-worth, make people feel special, and provide a service they wouldn’t normally be able to get for themselves,” says event co-organizer, Laura Henderson. Hair and makeup artists will be on hand to make the day memorable, meanwhile food and drinks have been donated, and a kids’ play area set up. At the end of the appointment, clients

Help Portrait sees photographers, graphic artists and other professionals volunteer their services. will walk out with a printed photo and an edited CD of the entire shoot. With studio portraits running in the hundreds of dollars, it’s no surprise that providing deserving individuals and families with a professionally photographed shoot is a popular idea. Henderson says the number of people involved has more than doubled since last year. The bulk of appoint-

ments are scheduled, arranged though community outreach organizations like the Salvation Army and Abbotsford Food Bank, however, organizers say drop-ins are welcome. Help Portrait is happening Dec. 10, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Bakerview Church, 2285 Clearbrook Rd. For more info or to contribute to the event, contact helpportraitabbotsford@ gmail.com.

CONTEST QUESTION: WHICH AHL TEAM IS THE AFFILIATE OF THE CHICAGO WOLVES? EMAIL ANSWER TO: m contest@abbynews.com

DR. JONATHAN WINNER CHICAGO WOLVES

After almost 30 years in Abbotsford, Dr Winner has retired from Family Practice. Throughout these years, Dr Winner has provided a wonderful service to the community of Abbotsford, including many years working in the Emergency and Operating Rooms at the old MSA Hospital. More recently, he has taken his skills into the residential care facilities and provided exemplary care for many of our senior citizens in the Tabor, Valhaven and Menno homes.

Sing along with the A-Tones

Abbotsford locals can sing or listen to Christmas carols with the A-Tones’s sing-alongs, every Monday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Seniors Association, at 33889 Essendene Ave. The group celebrates older tunes including gospel, folk music, the blues and country. Holiday music will be on the song list up until Christmas. All ages are invited, song lyrics are provided, and attendees are encouraged to bring instruments. Organizers say the event is an excellent opportunity for those learning the English language, and for seniors who experience dementia. Which of these costly mistakes will you make when you sell your home? ABBOTSFORD - A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of home sellers don’t get what they want for their homes and become disillusioned and - worse Ànancially disadvantaged when they put their homes on the market.

As this report uncovers, most home sellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled “The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar”. To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your FREE copy of this report, call toll-free 1-800-478-1805 and enter 1000. You can call any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. downtown abbotsford

We’ve come a long way baby! Historic Downtown Abbotsford that is. Thinking back 23 years ago to when I first moved to Abbotsford, I compare my thoughts to the upscale boutiques, restaurants and cafes that adorn the streets today; and it’s like night and day. The Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards certainly reflected that change this year. The Abbotsford Downtown Business Association is beaming with pride with our 10 various nominations for the 2011 Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards. A true reflection of the hard work and determination that the local Downtown business owners have put into their businesses that has in turn helped create a vibrant, shopping and dining destination for you to enjoy. Remember to support your local merchants.

When you think of Christmastime in Historic Downtown Abbotsford, what comes to mind? Browsing through the boutiques and shops; finding unique treasures for that special someone; visiting the myriad restaurants and cafes. Or does your mind unwillingly turn to what long-time residents have become accustomed to: being slightly embarrassed by…the Downtown Abbotsford Christmas Tree. You are not alone! The same uneasiness comes over you, when thinking of Aunt Martha, that endearing aunt, who joins the family once a year for Christmas dinner. As loved as she is, you wish she might retire the outdated, not so lovely outfit she adorns herself in year after year; for the last 21 years in fact! Aunt Martha and the Downtown Abbotsford Christmas Tree have a lot in common. Guess what, after 21 years, Aunt Martha has a brand new look, and so does Downtown Abbotsford’s Christmas Tree. December 4th, the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association will be unveiling our “Spectacular New Christmas Tree Lighting System” in Historic Downtown Abbotsford! This wonderful family tradition has spanned generations. This year expect even more fun and enjoyment from hands-on crafts for kids, beautiful gifts and treasures from local artisans, and delectable foods and treats. Maybe even indulge in a free cup of hot chocolate to toast the season! Enjoy the afternoon entertainment on our mainstage as well as some jaw-dropping surprises! Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive in their 1963 antique fire truck at 3:00pm. Make sure the kids take time to whisper their heart’s desire into Santa’s ear, while Mrs. Claus takes notes to remind her jolly husband on Christmas Eve. At 5:00 pm, prepare to have your breath taken away, as we debut our “Spectacular New Lights” on our much beloved Historic Downtown Christmas Tree! Come join in the fun on Essendene Avenue in Historic Downtown Abbotsford on Dec 4th from 1-5pm.

Al Friesen, head coach of the Yale Lions senior boys basketball team, says his smallish squad will have to play a “controlled crazy” style if it hopes to succeed this season. It sounds like an oxymoron, and it’s certainly a fine line for a team to walk. But the Lions walked it effectively on Wednesday evening, as they blew out a solid Heritage Woods Kodiaks team 80-58 in the opening game of the Valley Battle, an annual AAA high school hoops showcase hosted by the University of the Fraser Valley. On behalf of the teachers of Abbotsford I would like to express my gratitude to the over 33,000 people who took part in the Civic Election. It is encouraging to see so many people actively participating in the lives of our students by electing trustees to the School Board. The teachers of Abbotsford hope that parents and the community will continue to take on such a diligent role in the lives of our children. Although teachers in Abbotsford are continuing with our job action, we are providing the same quality educational experience and enrichment activities as in the past. Please stay in touch with your child’s teachers through email or visits, volunteer in the school as part of the PAC, help with extra-curricular activities or attend a school board meeting and ask questions. Remain involved, because our kids matter. Jeff Dunton President, Abbotsford District Teachers’ Association

competitive.” The Lions got strong contributions from senior guards Trevor Berge (25 points), Landon Gartner (17) and Sid Sethi (14), but it was Jauquin Bennett-Boire who raised the most eyebrows. The Grade 9 phenom, who moved to Abbotsford from Saskatoon over the summer, posted 18 points and nine rebounds. “I’m sure he’s one of the best Grade 9 guards in the country,” Friesen said of Bennett-Boire. “He’s dunking now in practice, and at times, you forget he’s in Grade 9. He’ll do silly things at times, but then all of a sudden he’ll just blow by a guy, and the contact comes, and he just finishes. How many Grade 9s can do that? Most of them would be falling on the ground. “He does some things you can’t teach. If I can teach him a few other things, he could

be a special player.” The back half of the Valley Battle doubleheader was considered the marquee matchup, as No. 3-ranked W.J. Mouat took on No. 5 White Rock Christian Academy. WRCA ultimately prevailed 63-50. Mouat, missing star frontcourt players Cam Friesen and Tristan Etienne due to injury, struggled mightily on the offensive end in the first half – too many Hawks possessions ended with fadeaway three-pointers being launched as the shot clock ticked down. Trailing 35-23 at the break, Mouat cut the deficit in half early in the third quarter, as some nice ball movement yielded treys on back-to-back possessions by point guard Amrit Dubb. But the Warriors pulled away late in the fourth, as Mouat surrendered a series of costly offensive rebounds. Jesse Coy paced the Mouat offence with 22 points, while Mac Thompson notched a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Tyus Allen (18) and Vartan Tanielian (16) were the top scorers for WRCA. Afterward, Hawks coach Rich Ralston said his team has a long way to go, but he wasn’t overly worried about the defeat. “Everyone’s a work in progress, and we are as well,” he noted. “White Rock will be one of the teams vying for a Valley title, and I’d like to think we’d have an opportunity to be one of those teams as well. But we’ve got 35 games until we have to worry about that.”

coach Rich Ralston said his squad still has a lot to prove. “Rankings are fun, but when it comes down to it, you’ve got to play the games,” he noted. The small-but-speedy Yale Lions will also be a factor in the senior boys draw, while the Abbotsford Christian Knights are an interesting dark horse. Two seasons ago, the Knights’ current crop of seniors finished fourth in the Fraser Valleys, losing to Mouat by one point for bronze. On the girls’ side, Yale is also aiming to rekindle the magic of two seasons ago. Their Grade 12 class, as juniors, won the Fraser Valleys and finished fifth at provincials. The Lions have played second fiddle locally in recent years to Mouat, which won the B.C. AAA title last year, but they’re aiming to move to the front of the pack this season behind a talented senior core led by Jessica Collins, Hannah Klassen, Kendra Arnold and Sarah Kurath. “It’s been good having Mouat down the road,” Yale coach Euan Roberts said. “We saw what a provincial champion looked like, so we know what it takes.” Even though Mouat sent five girls from their B.C. title team on to the post-secondary ranks, they’re still talented enough to merit an honourable mention in the provincial ranking, and they’ll also be in the mix. Parity in junior division The juniors are harder to handicap, because there isn’t the same level of familiarity with athletes and teams as at the senior level. “We haven’t seen the other teams yet,” noted Jim Williams, who coaches the MEI junior boys with Arnie Dick. “I think it’s going to be the usual suspects for junior boys – Mouat, Yale, and we’ll be fine as well.” The junior girls side figures to be wide-open. In addition to traditional contenders like Mouat, Yale and MEI, Abby Christian and Abby Traditional could also be in the mix. “It’s evening out a lot this year,” said Tym Berger, who coaches the Abby Christian junior girls. “Based on what happened at the junior and Grade 8 levels last year, it could

Hawks aim to stop Rams’ runners Dan KINVIG

Abbotsford News

Conventional football wisdom holds that teams must be able to run the ball on offence and stop the run on defence in order to succeed in the playoffs. That’s rarely rung more true than in the lead-up to Saturday’s B.C. AAA high school championship game, when the No. 2-ranked W.J. Mouat Hawks meet the No. 3 Mount Douglas Rams at B.C. Place Stadium (7 p.m. kickoff). Last weekend, the Victoria-based Rams flexed their muscles in an eyebrow-raising

Piskula recalled by Flames

Joe Piskula has been the epitome of consistency with the Abbotsford Heat this season, and he was rewarded on Thursday afternoon when he was called up by the Calgary Flames. The erstwhile Heat blueliner was summoned to replace Flames veteran Mark Giordano, who injured his hamstring in Tuesday’s 1-0 win over the Nashville Predators. Piskula, a steady stay-at-home defenceman, joined the Heat on an AHL contract in the fall of 2010, and he earned a two-way NHL/AHL deal from the Flames after a solid debut in Abbotsford. This season, the 27-year-old Antigo, Wis. native posted one goal and three assists in 18 games with the Heat, to go with a +1 rating. He’s formed a solid chemistry over the past two seasons with fellow D-man T.J. Brodie, who was called up by the Flames in mid-November. Earlier Thursday, the Flames sent a player the other way, assigning enforcer Pierre-Luc

Letourneau-Leblond to the Heat. The right winger, nicknamed PL3, led the AHL in

penalty minutes last season, racking up 334 with the Albany Devils. He played three games

with the Flames this fall, going pointless with 10 penalty minutes and a +1 rating.

OBITUARIES

DAVIES Thelma May It is with a heavy heart that the family announces the quiet passing of Thelma May Davies on November 26, 2011 in Chilliwack, BC. Thelma was born in Toronto, Ontario on the 4th of May 1919 and was the oldest daughter to Victor and Irene Neilson. She worked at numerous occupations in her younger years from sorting catalogues to working in a machine gun factory during the war. She met and married Phillip Davies and raised two sons. She became a book binder and an offset pressman and joined De Havilland Aircraft, Canada in 1957 and finished a long career with Spar Aerospace, printing NASA material for the development of the Canadarm for space flight. She moved to British Columbia in 1987 and became involved with the Senior’s Help And Awareness Council of the Abbotsford Police. Thelma is predeceased by her husband Phillip Cavell Davies on June the 1st, 1985 and her youngest sister Irene Neilson in 1963. Thelma will be heavily missed by her sons Barry Davies (Shirley) of Chilliwack and Victor Davies (Mary) of Winnipeg; sisters Marie Warren of Ontario / Florida, Gladys McQuinn, Huntsville, ON, Bettie Aitchison, Innisfil, ON, brother, Ernest Robert Neilson, Belleville, ON, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. She leaves grandchildren Steven (Michelle), Robert (Jeana), Krystal, Amanda, Stacey, Lisa, Kim, Darlene and three great grandchildren. Loving memories we will never forget, And you will be sadly missed along life’s way. With silent thought and deep regret, We will think of you every day. Though no longer in our life to share, But, in our hearts you will always be there. Thelma so loved her family and those that contributed so much to her happiness in her long life. The family is grateful to Fraser Health and Heritage Village, Chilliwack, for their excellent care and the help that they gave the immediate family. A memorial service for Thelma is planned at a future gathering of the family.

OBITUARIES

GIBSON, Audrey Lydie, peacefully at Abbotsford, B.C. on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011, at the age of 84 years. Predeceased by her husband, James R. Gibson and her brother Leslie (Peggy), Audrey is survived by her children, Ian (Laura) Gibson and Jill Harrison; her grandchildren, Daniel, Rachael (Greg), Nicholas, Graeme and Katie. She leaves, also, her dear brother Colin (Eunice), sisters-in-law Emily and Maureen, nieces, nephews and dear friends. Our sincere gratitude to the wonderful staff of Sherwood Manor, for their special brand of loving care.

RILEY, Leland Lee was born in Big Valley, Alta. March 8, 1915. He moved to BC in the forties and there he met Luella Phillips and they were married Nov.17, 1945. In the early years of their marriage Lee was logging at Nimpkish Lake. Later the family moved to Porpoise Bay and he worked for Johnsons Logging. When logging ended they moved to Kaslo, BC where Lee rented an old hotel and the party was on. The next move was to Mission by the old Eddy Match Co and at the age of 39 Lee joined the RCAF. Due to all the unrest in Europe, he was transferred to Metz, France in 1960. In 1964 they moved to Orillia, Ontario and then to North Bay. In 1967 they came back to Mission. They travelled extensively in their motor home and in Sept of 2005 Lee lost his beloved Ella. He then went into Burquitlam Lions Care in 2007 and passed away Nov 25, 2011. He leaves his daughter Carol (Gordon), his grandson Tyler, granddaughter Lainie and great grandson Kai and several nieces and nephews. IT IS JUST POLITICS . . .

thank you!. Angelo Rea B.Th., M.T.S.

Area Manager DIGNITY FUNERAL HOMES

As a business leader and a community-minded person, I have met many individuals that have a heart for Abbotsford. Our recent election was interesting. Congratulations to Bruce Banman our new mayor and to our city council. We live in a community and in a country where people have a voice. Sometimes these voices result into change. Someone gets the brunt of it all. The HST was defeated because the citizens of this beautiful province did not agree with it. A large majority of residents rejected the P3 water issue in Abbotsford. Behind these issues are individuals. Whether we agree with them or not, we know that, they do have the best interest of our community and province in mind. I want to thank our local politicians. They have a tough job before them.

I have gotten to know George Peary and I want to thank you George. Many positive results came from your leadership. I know you love Abbotsford. I admire you for this. As Chairman of the Abbotsford Hospice Society board, I was witness to George and his support towards us. You were an encouragement with city council in providing us with land to build the Campus of Care that will house Canuck Place, Matthew’s House, and Abbotsford Hospice Society. These organizations will support millions of people in the future. This is one of many acts of kindness that you did. You and your wonderful wife personally supported us financially. You may no longer be Mayor, but you can hold your head high. In the end, its just politics and I want to thank you George for your service.
