The Abbotsford Police Department busted a trio of suspected gang members with more than three kilograms of cocaine on Wednesday night. At 8:10 p.m. the APD’s Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) executed a search warrant at a residence in the 2200 block of Bakerview Street. DEU was assisted by Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team who were deployed in the Armoured Rescue Vehicle. “We had intel that there was going to a large quantity of drugs at that location, so we brought in the cavalry,” said APD spokesman Const. Ian MacDonald, adding police expected there would be guns to protect the drugs. Patrol and traffic section officers also assisted the bust. Seized from the residence was
the cocaine, a small amount of heroin, a replica handgun and over $2,600 cash. Sold in kilogram packages the cocaine would be worth approximately $40,000 per kg, but could have a street value of up to double that, said MacDonald. Three men, 19, 21 and 27 years of age, were taken into custody inside the residence and police will be recommending charges of possession for the purposes of trafficking against each of them. Two of the men have had extensive involvement with police. Although he declined to say which criminal organization the men belong to, MacDonald said police believe there is gang involvement. “You would not be seeing kilolevel amounts of coke without gang connections,” he said.

Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
On the nights that his father didn’t return home after work, Mike would sit up waiting for him in the living room. His dad was a drinker, and Mike always worried that something bad would happen to him. As soon as he saw the glare of the headlights in the driveway, Mike would scurry off to bed and hide under the covers, crying. He was relieved his dad was safe, but scared that a barrage of drunken verbal abuse would be aimed at him, his older brother or his mom. Mike worried that others would find out about his alcoholic father. He would often run home from school, ahead of the other kids, so they wouldn’t know he lived in the house with the man who was loud, embarrassing and obnoxious. Now 44, Mike Novakowski, a sergeant with the Abbotsford Police Department, devotes much of his time talking to young people about making good choices and trying to steer them away from a life of crime. Many of them are living through a dysfunctional upbringing similar to his own, and he wants them to know he understands. Novakowski shares his story with local students through the series of “Operation” programs – Tarnish, Impact, Veritas, Lodestar, Reclamation and Acorn. He created and developed the initiatives, starting in 2009 during a period when gang activity was rampant in Abbotsford. This work has earned him the 2010 Abbotsford Policing Award for Outstanding Community Service. The series includes posters and videos, but the main focus is on school presentations. Novakowski has spoken in front of thousands of kids, telling the older ones about the dangerous lures of gangs, including the false feeling of family they can offer to youth seeking a sense of belonging. He talks to the younger ones about being kind to others, using the opportunity to share another piece of his history. He was bullied as a child because of a condition called pectus carinatum – a deformity of the chest that can result in pressure on the heart and lungs and which made him look a bit different. He required surgery – involving 200 stitches – at the age of 12 to remove some of the bone and ease the pressure on his organs. Novakowski, a self-proclaimed intro-

I struggled with exposing my private life in such a manner, but I’m really, really glad I did because the kids can relate.” Mike Novakowski
he wants to deliver is that life is about choices and responsibility. He recalls making a conscious decision, as a young boy, that he would not be like his father, who died in 2004. But Novakowski can’t pinpoint exactly why he stayed out of trouble when others in his situation might have gone a different direction. He said his strong, loving mother kept him level-headed, and he gravitated towards academics, earning straight
A’s and many awards during his school years in Delta. Among his career considerations were a veterinarian or a movie director/producer. He often shot films on his Straight-8 camera. Police officer was also high on the list. He liked the idea of “being part of something positive and helping people.” Novakowski became a reserve officer at the age of 19 to determine whether it was something he wanted to do permanently. A stint as a border officer came next before he joined the police academy in 1989 and was then signed on with the Matsqui Police, which became the Abbotsford Police Department when the two cities amalgamated. Novakowski, who is married with three kids, spent 10 years on the streets – including patrol, the emergency response team and the bike squad – and loved the adrenalin rush he got from not knowing what was coming next. “No two calls are the same. There are a lot of personalities involved ... (I like) the challenge of going into situations not knowing all the information.” His love of academics has continued through the years. In 2005, Novakowski earned his master of arts in leadership and training. This year, he completed

Abbotsford’s new radio read water meters have been installed and according to a staff report, are already locating costly leaks. Karl Filiatrault, water planning engineer for the city, told council 18,500 meters have already been installed along with 24,500 endpoints – the devices which send water readings to the 16 data collectors. Approximately 1,600 meters still have to be installed and three additional data collectors will be added to complete the project. Filiatrault estimates all the work will be complete by the end of August. Other adjustments also have to be made as four of the data locators will be repositioned for better service. Since the city began the radio read program, in the fall of 2010, 600 letters have been sent to customers with suspected leaks and approximately 450 of those were confirmed and repaired.

his master of law, but has no desire to enter the courthouse as a career. “When you become a lawyer, the courthouse is your office ... Here, there’s an opportunity to change things before they get to the courthouse.” He is also a writer, regularly contributing to some industry publications, and an instructor, having taught at both University of the Fraser Valley and the Justice Institute of B.C. His five-year role as the sergeant in charge of community policing ends later this year, and he’s not sure what he will do next with the Abbotsford Police, although he’s thinking about returning to patrol. Whatever his choice, his involvement with young people will continue because he is emphatic that they have the power to take control of their lives. “You can always finish strong. I can’t change my upbringing, but I can change where I’m headed.”

Hull resigns from chamber David Hull, executive director of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, has resigned. The move came after the chamber’s board of directors, on June 23, requested, received and accepted the resignation. “Hull was suspended with pay on June 3, 2011 pending an inqui-
ry by the board,” said Patrick Giesbrecht, chamber president. “I am unable to comment further on the circumstances surrounding Hull’s resignation at this time.” Hull has been with the chamber for the past six years. No replacement has been named.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
HST vote
Will you attend any of Abbotsford’s summer festivals?
As soon as someone says the HST will protect jobs, I have to question what they’ve been reading and just how politically partisan they are. The bottom line (even if the HST gets to 10%) is that it’s an increase in costs to the taxpayer.
To answer, go to abbynews.com
Retiredinabby I hope when people make their decision on which way to vote that they will consider the views of B.C.’s farmers, who produce our food, and our local Chamber of Commerce ... I don’t think they are supporting the HST because of what the BC Liberal government is telling them – but because it is a much, much improved system than the cumbersome, costly and convoluted dual GST plus PST.
LAST WEEK, WE ASKED:
Should there be size restrictions on new homes in older neighbourhoods?
Jacob Klaps
YOU RESPONDED:
The only way to correct this injustice and stop the lies is to vote yes to get rid of the HST. This is our one and only chance to get it reversed.
YES: 81% NO: 19%

Impacts that remain after school year ends Katie
Bartel With yet another school year coming to an end, I’ve been thinking lately about the power of teachers. Some say they have no power, they’re just glorified babysitters. And to that, I shake my head in disbelief. A teacher has the ability to positively impact children – to change their lives, really. They also have the ability to scar them. How can you not call that power? Twelve years in the Abbotsford school district, I was lucky enough to have had four unforgettably incredible teachers, two in elementary school and two in high school. This week, after 26 years – a full career – at the same school, Ms. Duma, my Grade 5 teacher at Bradner elementary, took a final teaching bow. Today, I give her thanks. It is because of Ms. Duma that my
dear husband runs from the room every time I start singing. Not only was she my Grade 5 teacher, she also taught choir and handbells. And it didn’t matter how loud, or how out of tune I sang Winter Wonderland, she never shut me up, never banned me from the music room, never tried to dissuade my singing desires, not once. In fact, I am so sure her conductor signals were actually telling me to belt it out even louder. And so Ms. Duma, I thank you for my love of singing Christina Aguilera’s I Am Beautiful at the top of my lungs. Deep down, my husband does too. It is because of Ms. Duma, and a postcard from Peru, that my dreams of travel were first ignited. It was in my year that she and her husband adopted a baby from Peru. They left in May of that school year, and while some teachers wouldn’t have looked back in their heightened excitement of starting a family, she did. Many times. We received regular updates of her travels, and that summer break, I received a postcard from her with an Inca woman dressed in traditional attire. It was in
that postcard that she informed me she would be bringing home not one, but two babies. We all got postcards, and I still have mine and the embroidered pin of an Incan woman stored in my most precious treasures. And so Ms. Duma, I thank you for
...to this day, she continues to make me feel like I am one of the most special, talented, beautiful people on this earth starting my jet-setting dreams. It is because of Ms. Duma that my standards for other teachers skyrocketed. Ms. Duma never forgot her students. Not when she was becoming a new mom in Peru, not when students transferred to new schools, and most defi-
nitely not when they were feeling alone and scared in a cold, sterile hospital bed at B.C. Children’s Hospital. That year, just one year post-diabetes diagnosis and the start of my downward spiral of disease denial, I spent a lot of time in the hospital. But there was always a card, a giant handmade card, the size of a poster board folded in half, wishing me better with signatures and funny comments and drawings from the entire class – at the prompting of my dear teacher. And so Ms. Duma, I thank you for those nights when I so desperately needed comfort, of being able to find those warm, fuzzy feelings every time I opened those cards. It’s been 23 years since I was in Ms. Duma’s class, and thanks to Facebook, to this day, she continues to make me feel like I am one of the most special, talented, beautiful people on this Earth. That is the power of an amazing teacher. That is what every classroom needs. Katie Bartel is a reporter with the Chilliwack Progress.

letters Check ‘more options’ for parking
Recently I read Gertie Poole’s letter regarding parking fees at the new hospital. I agree that they are outrageous if one pays by the hour, or even for two hours. The company that charges such high rates should be ashamed. When people park at emergen-
cy, they are normally stressed, and on top of that, are asked to pay $3.25/hour! Last year, when I took my husband to emergency, and he had to stay in the hospital, I spent a huge amount of money during the first week. Fortunately, we talked to some friends who
told us to go to “more options” (on the parking meter). If you do that, you will find that one of the options allows you to park for $20/week if you are a senior. So, I was very relieved during the second week of parking at the hospital. After paying $20,
take your receipt, and leave it on your dashboard. You can come and go whenever you want to, and park anywhere. What a relief ! In my opinion, the company that owns the parking meters should post a notice on all the meters: ‘Please check more options.’ This would benefit
Driving is a privilege, not a right In response to Mrs. Patricia Swen’s letter “Licence criteria is unfair” on June 28. Two years ago an elderly driver turned left in front of me, causing me to collide with his minivan. I was riding a motorcycle at the time, and almost lost my life because of his inability to properly judge the safety of his turn. He admitted to police that he saw me well in advance of the accident, but misjudged the circumstances and proceeded into my lane, causing the collision. Two years later, I am still recovering from injuries sustained in the accident. Perhaps, if he had been given appropriate testing to ensure he still possessed the required driving skills to retain his driver’s licence, I would not have had my life turned upside down. Driving a vehicle is not a right; it is a privilege and when one is unable to operate a
Cut funds immediately Canadians are no doubt happy to hear they will no longer be paying the full bill for each vote political parties obtain. Why is it necessary to do this on a gradual basis? If it’s worth cutting off the expense. Why not make the cutting complete now? Another unnecessary bill that has been funded by tax-payers is the shameful annual billion-dollar gift to the CBC. If political parties must fund their own expenses, surely the CBC ought to do the same. Mark B. Toth

NDP Leader Adrian Dix brought his ant-HST campaign to Abbotsford on Tuesday. Dix has been touring the province since he won the leadership. He has recently been through Prince George, Quesnel, Williams Lake, Kamloops, Vernon and throughout Vancouver Island. In the past week he has seen 14 towns and cities. He was met by a friendly audience of NDP supporters at the Everbloom Garden Centre on Mt. Lehman Road. They included David Murray, the federal NDP candidate for the Abbotsford riding. “Man that guy works hard,” Murray said of Dix, noting his busy travel schedule. “It’s really apropos that he’s rolling up his sleeves, and getting after it.” Dix told The News that his “grassroots campaign” is discovering a familiar theme. “I’m hearing from small business: ‘People have less money to spend, and it’s hurting us.’” He said it is inappropriate for the government to spend $7 million of taxpayers money for HST referendum advertising that supports its position. He added the spending would be illegal under election law. However, Dix doesn’t believe the advertising or the drop in the HST from 12 to 10 per cent will save the tax from being voted down in the mail-in referendum. He’s confident the “yes” vote will win. “We’re plucky, and we’ve got a better argument,” Dix contends.
NEIL CORBETT
Abbotsford News
Adrian Dix speaks against the HST in Abbotsford. That argument is that the tax is “shifting $1.9 billion in taxes onto working families,” he said, adding big business benefits from the tax break. The HST issue has shown that the Liberal government “can’t be trusted,” said Dix, because of the many times the public has been “lied to.” He said the provincial government has reneged on its word when it promised not to bring in the HST, when it said the tax would be revenue neutral, said all the revenue would be put into health care, and said it would generate 100,000 jobs. He said the government will become too arrogant if it can save the HST in the referendum. “I don’t think, in the end, they will get away with it,” he predicted. “David sometimes beats Goliath.”

Prior to Monday night’s KISS concert at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre, Gene Simmons and his family did some filming for their TV show, Gene Simmons Family Jewels. Airing on A&E, the show follows the life of Simmons, his longtime partner Shannon Tweed and their two kids, Nick and Sophie. Filming was done around the arena before the start of the concert. While it’s not been confirmed when it will air, an episode titled Mr. Tweed Goes to Canada will be shown on July 12. Before KISS took to the stage on Monday evening, Tweed and her kids walked through the arena waving to the fans, drawing wild applause and cheers. On Tuesday night, Simmons and his family were spotted leaving the Abbotsford Earls. They spent the evening at the restaurant watching the latest episode of their reality TV show. Tweed was live tweeting throughout the episode called Blood Is Thicker Than Hummus, where Simmons returns to Haifa, Israel, for the first time in more than 50 years to receive an award and see his family.

Ward is new Heat coach Former assistant ascends to top job with AHL club Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
To gain an insight into Troy Ward’s coaching philosophy, it’s instructive to look at how he spends his off-season. Ward, named the new head coach of the Abbotsford Heat on Thursday, is a big believer in what he terms a “holistic” approach to developing hockey players. His “Hockey and Sons” skills camp, which he operates each summer in his home state of Minnesota, is a case in point. “I’ve got more than 500 parents and kids coming in this summer,” said Ward, 49. “I teach them how to co-exist in
the sport together, and how parents can mentor the kids. “I’d say that’s how I’m going to manage this (Heat) team,” he added. “We have to develop hockey players, and I find the best way to do that is to stress being a good human being. I’m a patient teacher.” Ward joined the Heat for the 2010-11 season, serving WARD as an assistant coach under bench boss Jim Playfair. When Playfair departed earlier this month for an associate coaching position with the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes, Ward was an obvious candidate to succeed him, given his reputation for solid teaching and for having a strong rapport with the players.
“The players, in their exit meetings, indicated Troy was someone they respected and admired a great deal,” said Jay Feaster, general manager of the NHL parent Calgary Flames. “One of the young men said, ‘I’d go through a wall for that guy.’” Ward said he plans to install a puck-possession game. “We’re going to try to keep the puck as much as we can, and try to stay on the offensive side of things,” he said. “And when we don’t have it, we want to be in pursuit of it really quickly. “Last year we decided to sit back a little more because we found it more advantageous for our young group. But we have to keep in mind that this group, going forward, isn’t young anymore. They’ve had a whole year in the AHL, so we’ve got to get them up and moving.” For more with Ward and Feaster, visit abbynews.com
