Alpina Dusk Dawn is a resistant calf who doesn’t want to leave her pen. It takes the work of two to get her out – Reid Schurmann, 16, and Kim Groothof, 20. Reid ropes the calf, and Kim calmly leads her to a grassy patch, setting her up for presentation. It’s a practice run for Kim and the 10-month-old calf, who are competing together at this weekend’s 4H portion of Abbotsford Agrifair. In B.C., 4H is open to kids from nine to 19 years old. Through group and individual projects, the program prepares its members for their future as adult citizens of any community, not just rural or farm areas. They work with animals, ranging from llamas to chickens, and have the opportunity to learn skills in subjects such as photography, sewing and horticulture. Throughout the year they work on speeches, demonstrations and confidence building. In the spring and summer they show their projects. Both Kim and Reid belong to 4H Dairy Sumas, which has 17 members from Aldergrove, Abbotsford and Chilliwack. In preparation for this weekend’s event, Kim has been working with her calf every day in half-hour increments at her family’s farm in Sumas. It will be Kim’s final Agrifair competition as it’s her 11th year in the 4H

They’ve also developed their public speaking and leadership skills, learned how to work as a team and earned school credits, said Kim’s

mom, Angela. As a child, Angela also took part in 4H. Growing up on a dairy farm, Angela’s parents got her involved. She soon made the transition to leader – a position she held for nine years. “It’s a family,” said Angela. “Everything is a team effort, even though they’re competing against each other.” At this weekend’s fair, which will Continued on A6

Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen doesn’t believe incineration is the answer to the Lower Mainland’s garbage problem. Despite the decision by Minister of Environment Terry Lake to endorse Metro Vancouver’s regional waste plan – which includes incineration – van Dongen maintains his stand. “I’m not convinced there aren’t other options that are better for the environment and the economy,” he said. Van Dongen said it is important to ask questions and seek accountability from Metro on environmental and economic issues surrounding its plan. “I always had the distinct impression that Metro Vancouver had a predisposition or bias towards waste-to-energy, right from the

start,” he said. He’s not convinced by Metro’s statistics and wants “a proper, blankpage analysis” on all the possible options. Metro’s plan includes a waste-toenergy plant, built either in the Lower Mainland or possibly on Vancouver Island. It also calls for an aggressive push for more recycling and composting. Waste-to-energy is the process of burning garbage and harnessing the energy created to offset the use of fossil fuels. Proponents say it is cost-effective and helps the environment. Those opposed to the option are concerned the process will introduce more pollution and toxins into the Fraser Valley air shed. The concern over the valley’s air is not new to van Dongen, who fought the threat of SE2. Sumas Energy 2 was a proposed natural gas power plant to be constructed

near the Canadian border, in Sumas Wash. It was defeated in 2005 after a huge public outcry over the emissions it would release. The environment is just one of the issues concerning van Dongen. He said the financial implication is huge, especially the half billion dollars needed in capital. “Then you are fully invested and dependent of the waste stream to keep on running.” But van Dongen said incineration is still a long way away. “There is lots of time” he said, noting the minister set out some significant conditions. “I think there are a lot of hurdles to be met before it becomes a reality ... Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald was prepared for the worst when he called a hospital to get an update on the condition of a 46-year-old woman who was run over by a dump truck on Wednesday at approximately 3:30 p.m. She was airlifted to hospital in critical condition, but MacDonald learned she had improved considerably by Thursday morning. “To my surprise – and I’m really happy to report – she’s in stable condition,” said the APD spokesman. The police investigation has revealed that the truck, which had just dropped a load at a construction site on Marshall Road just south of the Clearbrook interchange, backed into the traffic control flag person. It knocked her over, and the rear tire actually rolled onto her body. Other drivers and people at the construction site on Marshall Road honked and waved to get the driver’s attention. He stopped, and got out of his vehicle to see what had happened. His truck tire still had the woman pinned to the ground. “Essentially, the dump truck was parked on her,” said MacDonald. The driver got back in his vehicle and

CONTRACT AWARDED Abbotsford has awarded a contract worth just over $1.2 million to Jakes Construction Ltd. of Chilliwack. The contract is for the installation of water mains for the Clearbrook and Peardonville CICP (City in the Country Plan) lands. In total, 1,330 metres of 400mm diameter water mains will be installed. The City of Abbotsford included funds in the 2011 Preventative Maintenance Budget for camera inspection and cleaning of sanitary and storm sewer pipelines in the following areas shown on the maps.

The City of Abbotsford received approval to increase the capacity of four existing water wells in order to meet peak demand for water during summer months. The wells are located in the southwest corner of Mill Lake Park. The current pumping capacity is 75 litres per second (L/s) and the existing pumps will be modiÂżed to increase the capacity to 290 L/s. A total of 2,505 million litres of water may be drawn from these wells annually, between May and September. The City of Abbotsford will provide notiÂżcation to the public at least two weeks in advance of the annual start-up of the wells. For the 2011 season, the Bevan Avenue wells are expected to begin operating from early July onward, as needed. Ian MacDonald said they arranged for victimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s assistance for the woman, who was not allowed to stay in her home. MacDonald said the situation highlights the need for people to look out for one another, and not let neighbours become isolated. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want to encourage people to stay connected with each other. If they think thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something going on with their neighbour, they should call police.â&#x20AC;? He referred to last weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s case when neighbours eventually made police aware of a 75-year-old man who had not been seen. He was found, immobilized, in a house that was filled with debris, and called dangerously unclean. MacDonald said he appreciates neighbours in such situations â&#x20AC;&#x153;donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to get that person in trouble,â&#x20AC;? but said they should recognize when agencies with legal authority need to be involved. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They (neighbours) could be saving lives â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or in this case, the lives of animals.â&#x20AC;?

10% HST cheaper than PST, study finds Tom FLETCHER Black Press

A 10 per cent harmonized sales tax will cost an average B.C. family $255 a year less than returning to the former provincial sales tax, according to a new study. David Murrell, professor of public finance at the University of New Brunswick, released the first version of his study last year, examining the switch to the HST in B.C. and Ontario. He calculated a 12 per cent HST would cost an average B.C. family an extra $490 in new sales taxes paid. Factoring in low-income tax credits and grants, the B.C. HST would mean an net $320 tax increase. After the B.C. government announced it would reduce the HST rate to 11 per cent next year and 10 per cent in 2014, Murrell updated his calculations and released the results this week. “If I were a B.C. voter, based on this

evidence, I would vote ‘no’ in the HST referendum,” Murrell said. Murrell did a similar study in 1997 when Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland expanded their provincial sales tax to include services, and cut the rate to eight per cent. He also found a net saving to taxpayers in those provinces. B.C. consumer savings come from three sources, Murrell said. Goods that were subject to PST will now have it reduced to five per cent. The government has offered personal income tax credits to help compensate for the new HST. And businesses pass on savings from writing off taxes on material inputs and capital spending, lowering the price of products and services. Jock Finlayson, vice-president of the Business Council of B.C., said Murrell’s study is the first independent academic

analysis he has seen since the HST rate cut option was announced in May. Finlayson said he has heard many times that people don’t believe prices will be reduced as a result of HST tax breaks. But independent researchers have looked at

the switch from retail sales taxes to valueadded taxes around the world, and “without exception” they find that lower prices result, he said. With the Aug. 5 deadline for voting in B.C.’s HST referendum approaching, Fight HST organizers

Finance Minister Kevin Falcon, reached at a cabinet retreat in the Okanagan, said it is “ridiculous” to suggest that the government try to interfere with an independent office that has successfully supervised many elections and referendum votes.

Bryan Guest Shot As a boy, I never ate the last third of a banana. Those little black dots you see down there at the bottom? Tarantula eggs. Consumed, they’ll hatch in your stomach and lead to a whole bunch of fun. My sister told me this. Because she was older, her word, of course, was gospel. It was only much later that I learned the truth, that those black spots are actually microvitamins designed by NASA engineers to give you superpowers. But it’s surprising how durable urban legends, old wives’ tales, and even big sister’s headgames can be, in the face of pretty strong evidence to the contrary. Sure, we grownups no longer fear stepping on a crack in the sidewalk

for fear of putting our dear mothers in traction. Yet many of us still feel a pang of hesitation about opening an umbrella inside, or walking beneath a ladder. And when a black cat crosses our path many of us are prone to say to ourselves, oh boy, bad day ahead. Broke a mirror? We’re talking seven years, pal. But seriously. When I was a kid, the real plague was chewing gum. At the age of 10, I often stuffed massive wads of Big League Chew (designed to resemble chewing tabacky, but bright pink) in my mouth and, when it lost its sweetness, swallowed the whole gob of it. For some reason, I didn’t worry about the fact it would take seven years to digest. At any given time I must have had 10, 15 pounds of the stuff working its way through my innards. It’s no wonder my non-existent jump shot prevented me from getting on the basketball team in Grade 8. It’s lucky, though, that I never ate a whole bag of pop rocks followed by a can of Coke. As we all know, that’s

how little Mikey (“He likes it!”) of the Life cereal commercials died. OK, maybe that’s not true, but General Foods apparently distributed thousands of ﬂyers, and wrote letters to school principals in a futile attempt to dispel the myth.

It’s lucky, though, that I never ate a whole bag of pop rocks followed by a can of Coke. Mikey was a cute kid. Today he’s apparently an ad exec in New York. I’m not so cute. If you ever meet me in person don’t be shocked by my appearance. See, when I was eight, I made a really silly face. And yep, you guessed it – it stayed that way. Watched too much TV a couple years later and I

went cross-eyed. What a mess. So maybe, some of these urban legends and the like are true. There are several others, though, that many folks still believe and that I’ve recently learned are patently false. For one, men do not think about sex every seven seconds. It’s actually nine. Searing meat does not “lock in” the juices. But it does make a yummy crust on your steak. And earwigs, thankfully, will not crawl inside your ear while you’re sleeping and eat your brain. But do be careful if you have a dog. A friend of mine said that if you pat your dog’s head in a certain place, it will cause brain damage and ultimately, death. That’s why I always scratch my Lab retriever under the neck. Just to be safe. Bananas, thankfully, are OK to eat. Peel and all. Apples aren’t. Unless you like razor blades. It is critically important that all British Columbians are fully informed about the new deadline to submit their HST referendum ballots. We wrote to B.C.’s Chief Electoral Officer to ask for a two-week extension to the July 22 deadline because of the mail delays caused by the Canada Post lockout, and Elections B.C. agreed that an extension was necessary. The new deadline to return HST ballots is Friday, Aug. 5 at 4:30 p.m. However, this deadline is for ballots to arrive at Elections B.C., not to simply be postmarked by then, as one might expect. For this reason, we would encourage anyone who has not yet exercised their right to participate in this important decision for the future of B.C. to do so right away. We would also encourage people in rural communities to make use of the Service B.C. drop-

off centres if possible. There are 60 locations throughout the province (www.servicebc.gov. bc.ca/locations) and dropping your ballot off reduces the risk it will not be delivered in time or get lost in the mail. It can take up to seven business days for mail to reach its destination within B.C. Together with our New Democrat colleagues, we have traveled around the province and met with countless people who think the HST is an unfair tax that was poorly implemented, and must be scrapped by voting ‘Yes.’ When we hear of the Liberals doling out hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars to their friends and insiders to help them sell the tax in a $7 million effort to save their political hides, we know British Columbians deserve better. Why ask for public input?

I’m not really sure why Mayor George Peary is asking for public input on “fast tracking” the removal of agricultural land from the ALR to re-zone it industrial, council doesn’t listen anyway. some councillors who voted against it, but it still passed. Then there was the public “inputted” petition against building Mahogany Towers! It passed too. When other parts of this continent and the world are losing crops and farmland due to flooding or drought, we should be conserving farm-

land, but it seems that under the stewardship of Christy Clark’s Liberals there is a push for municipalities to pave our valley paradise and put up a parking lot. So, no Mayor Peary, I won’t give you my input, because you’re just going to do what you want anyway. Gary Huntbatch

Three years ago when Const. Ryan Reed of the Abbotsford Police Department first heard about Ride2Survive – a gruelling one-day cycle from Kelowna to Delta – he thought he might take up the challenge “someday.” “Someday” turned into “today” when the bike squad member lost a co-worker, Const. Martin Ellis-White, to cancer. Reed was involved in planning the memorial service and it was a message from Ellis-White that was read at the service, “to live for today instead of someday,” which prompted Reed to join the cycling fundraiser. Training for the 400 km route that includes a 12,000 foot climb and 19 hours of pedaling was a family affair, said Reed. Participants had to put in upwards of 300 km a week and tackled all-day rides that were over eight hours long. To fit in the training around his work schedule, Reed shelved every other extracurricular activity, and spent a lot of time away from his family. “My wife had to pull extra duty,” said Reed, who has two children, ages five and seven. Reed’s efforts did pay off. He completed the ride but not without experiencing a low moment along the way. When asked what his lowest moment was, Reed described an undulating stretch of road between Merritt and the bottom of Larson Hill. He had started that leg near the back of the pack, and found it extremely difficult to keep the pace. He could see the leading riders crest a hill that he was just starting to climb. Because he was playing a continuous game of catch-up, Reed found he had less time to eat and drink which led to dehydration issues. What kept him going was the memory of Const. Ellis-White, the loss of his step-father to cancer just days before the ride, and the realization that the purpose of this ultraendurance fundraiser was to simulate what it’s like to live with cancer. Reed’s high-point

was at Planet Ice in Maple Ridge – the last pit stop before the finish in North Delta – where his wife and children came out to meet him. Just before the riders were set to roll out, Reed’s son came running through the crowd of bikes and gave him a big hug. But the ride was moving out, so Reed had to say a quick goodbye and start pedaling again. Just as Reed round-

ed the corner onto the street, he saw his two children holding up signs to cheer him on saying: “Go Daddy Go!” and “You are all amazing!” When asked if he was going to do it again next year, Reed said that he has already signed up, and is thinking about how he can improve his training. To date he has raised over $5,000 and hopes to do even more fund-

raising next year. “It’s not a ride with a cause attached to it, it’s a cause with a ride attached to it,” he said. The 2012 Ride2Survive kicks off in February with a twohour indoor ride and orientation session at Southridge School in South Surrey. Registration is open now. Mission’s Hayden second in 100-metre free Mission’s Brent Hayden has wowed the swimming world again, earning a silver medal Thursday morning at the FINA World Aquatic Championships. The 2007 world champion put up a time of 47.95 seconds in the 100metre freestyle, narrowly losing to Australia’s James Magnussen, who clocked in at 47.63 seconds. “It’s awesome,” said Hayden, reflecting on winning his second career world championship medal. “I was hungry to get the medal. The work I had done on the start really paid off with my reaction time off the blocks being one of the best.” Hayden didn’t go into the worlds full of confidence after struggling

at a couple of tune-up meets. But with several family members in the stands, including his parents and fiancé, Hayden rose to the occasion. “We put the emphasis on more training this season and reduced the number of competitions,” said Hayden’s coach Tom Johnson. “So that meant the results this season were not at the level he was used to. But we stayed the course and kept moving forward. It really bodes well for the future.” Hayden’s medal was Canada’s second of the swimming competition. On Wednesday, Ryan Cochrane of Victoria won silver in the 800m freestyle.
