An emaciated lab-cross and her litter of pups were taken into the care of the SPCA on Saturday after concerned campers at Lake Errock campground in Mission spotted the mother with a heavy chain around her neck. The frail female dog, named Ruby, in addition to missing a significant amount of hair where the chain had rubbed against her skin, was also suffering from open sores and had numerous parasites. Campers notified the SPCA after recovering the wandering dog and removing a 13-pound chain from around her neck. Upon further investigation, the dog was tracked to a nearby residence, where it The heavy chain that was discovered was around the mother that she had given birth to a litter of dog’s neck. seven puppies, six weeks old. Four of the puppies, located back at the campground, had been given to campers. They were emaciated, infested with parasites and fleas and in need of immediate medical attention, said the SPCA. Three other puppies were given to people passing by the campground. One of the puppies has already been turned into the Abbotsford shelter,

However, the whereabouts of two others is unknown. Marcie Moriarty, the general manager of cruelty investigations for the B.C. SPCA, is urging whoever has the puppies to bring them to the Abbotsford shelter to be reunited with their mother. They are too young to be away from their mother, Moriarty said. “They will be missing out on a core socialization period,” she added.

They won’t learn social skills, such as interacting with other dogs. Ruby and her other pups are doing well. “She is quite a spunky dog,” Moriarty said. “There is a sense of relief she can nurse her puppies again.” The B.C. SPCA will recommend charges be laid under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and the Criminal Code of Canada against the owner of the dogs.

Thief targets seniors Image caught by video surveillance Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

A suspect who robbed an Abbotsford seniors’ complex on Sunday stole a video surveillance camera but didn’t realize he’d left behind an image of himself looking directly into the device. Abbotsford Police have now released still images of the video – which was stored on equipment separate from the camera – in an effort to identity the culprit. The theft took place at about 1 a.m. on July 3 in the Menno Housing independent living complex at 2021 Princess St. The suspect entered the underground parking garage and broke into two storage lockers. Police are still trying to determine exactly

what was stolen, but MacDonald said the items included some collector coins. The suspect also gained access to the site’s wellness centre, where he pilfered two 22-inch televisions. MacDonald said it’s not known whether the man had a vehicle and/or an accomplice. MacDonald did not want to say how the thief broke in. “I don’t want to give other people ideas,” he said. The suspect is described as Caucasian, 20 to 30 years old, with short or shaved hair, and wearing a black hoodie. Anyone with information is asked to call Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Sharing culture, wisdom From A5

his parents he’d never go back to school again. And he never did. His father worked at the local Clayburn brickmaking plant with 180 other native and white workers. When Ray turned 15 he also got a job at the plant, working for 54 cents an hour until it burned down in 1948. “That was big money, he says, smiling. Since there weren’t many native kids his age, he would go fishing in Marshall Creek with the white children of the brick workers. They caught trout and salmon in the spring, as millions of fish would come down the rivers, which he said kept many families fed during the Depression. “We had hazelnut poles and linen thread for our lines and a homemade hook to catch the trout. And the water was so clean you could see them go after the worm. The Sto:lo are river people, Ray says, and he

Elders Gathering at Tradex

The 35th annual BC Elders Gathering takes place at Tradex July 12-14. It is returning to the tribal grounds of the Sto:lo Nation, in Abbotsford, 35 years after the first meeting. The gathering is held in different parts of B.C. each year. This year, for the first time, it will be open to anyone, not just elders. That means organizers are expecting up to 5,000 visitors. The Elders Gathering is a way of preserving common heritage and traditions of First Nations. The gathering will feature workshops on financial management, elder abuse, and scheduled tours of the Sto:lo territory. There will also be traditional games, dances and songs at the Sumas Longhouse. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and costs $50.

used to paddle the Sumas to the Fraser with his grandfather. When he was a boy, his grandfather told him the river provided everything his people needed: water for tea, salmon, sturgeon and nourishment. “You look after that water, respect that water, and it’ll respect you forever. That was the teaching I got from my grandfather, probably close to 80 years ago. His grandfather told him the rivers are “blood vessels across the body of Mother Earth, and to protect the rivers as he would his own body. Much has changed in the years since Ray was a child listening to his elders. Now he’s invited by community organizations, hospitals and schools to speak about his culture and people. Ray says the voice of his people, once lost, has been restored.

OF THE WEEK

Do you think drivers are becoming less courteous?

Just wait till it’s illuminated at night! What’s the cost of installing and operating lighting for the two traffic circle distractions, I mean ornaments.

To answer, go to abbynews.com

wascobi I think it’s cute. Glad to see some non-native artwork to represent the people and the region!

LAST WEEK, WE ASKED:

Will you attend any of Abbotsford’s summer festivals?

shouston The city should have set up a burning barrel to represent all the wasted tax dollars spent on useless crap by this mayor and council. One word ... tacky! Mr. Smith

YOU RESPONDED:

Well, this may even be more distracting then a cell phone while driving.

Working away as the sun shines Chris

Bryan Guest Shot Here’s the scenario: summer finally has arrived. There’s glorious sun, long evenings, and the world seems to have gone on vacation. Parks are packed with people, morning, noon, and into those long evenings I was talking about. The beaches are probably just as packed with sun soakers, fun seekers. The world is resplendent with carefree, fill-your-boots fun. The dilemma: You’re not having it; you’re at work. The patsy, the chump, the sucker. That’s not me being mean, that’s just how you feel. And I’m here too, aren’t I? Foolish for not having become a teacher. A consultant. A drug dealer. Maybe your holidays aren’t booked until the end of August. Or worse, October. Used them up already? Don’t get any? Yikes! I feel your pain.

You can weep in your Corn Flakes. Rail against the gods. But it will do little to get you some desperately needed Vitamin D, sporting shorts, tanks and flip-flops. So what is a person to do? One approach was summed up well in a great old Kids in the Hall skit in which a savvy construction foreman introduces his work-weary labourer to the on-the-job slip-ups that can book you some R&R with the Goddess of Compensation. “I thought I recognized that look,” says the foreman to his grumpy employee. “What look?” “The look of a guy who’s daydreaming of a disabling but a non-crippling injury.” And later, the foreman elaborates: “There is a way for a guy to get what’s coming to him. It’s called compensation.” “Compensation?” “It comes from a Latin word, meaning ‘free money.’” It’s true that, during weeks like this, some people suddenly develop carpal tunnel after 20 years at the keyboard, just for July-August, or they catch a rash of summer colds, and use up

their sick time. Meantime, for those responsible folks out there — and yes, boss, that’s me, I swear — there’s got to be a better way. How to inject a little fun, while still getting the (bloody) job done? Here are a few suggestions I gleaned

Because colder places in Canada get snow days, we should have something similar here ... sun days. from colleagues, online and up there in my noggin while I was staring out the window, yearning to be on the other side of the fishbowl: • Get outside. On your lunch break, walk with a colleague, meet a friend for lunch, find a park and read a book in the sunshine. Got a meeting? Have it in the park. Bring a box of ice cream sandwiches. • Sometimes your attire can influ-

ence your state of mind. Why not wear flip-flops and shorts to work? Crazy Hawaiian shirts. Put a little zinc on your nose. Silly, but better than a nervous breakdown. A colleague of mine suggests women try sparkly shoes and perfume that smells like the beach (cocoa butter?). • Have a picnic dinner after work, at the beach, the park, your deck or in the yard. • Treat the weeknights like weekends. Go for drinks. See a movie. Hang out up with friends. Go to an outdoor pool, lounge on the deck. In the end, sadly, there’s no perfect way to alleviate the rather-be-havingfun-in-the-sun-instead-of-nosing-thegrindstone affliction. Work, after all, is called thus for a reason. So perhaps we should start a petition based upon the suggestion of Sheila Keenan, who on Twitter posited that because colder places in Canada get snow days, we should have something similar here. “Vancouver should get two or three sun days this summer. On really gorgeous days, everyone gets the day off.” I’m with you, Sheila. – Chris Bryan is editor of the Burnaby NewsLeader

Tax vote: Hard to trust I don’t believe that it would cost over $3 billion to go back to the old system. That’s just a thinly disguised scare tactic. They never mentioned how much it cost to implement the HST. A lot less, I’d guess. Alternatively, we know that the anti- HST campaign is primarily a move by the NDP to undermine the Liberals and they’ve won a lot of support. It would be a real shame if they got to spend all that nice money that’s been won from us by our representatives, and spend it they would, along with whatever they could borrow. I agree with the Liberals in the concept that the best way to help the poor is to grow the entire BC economy. I don’t see why I should change that

viewpoint just because Gordon Campbell (who picked a great time to drop out) made a poor PR move in pushing the HST through without public input. If it’s so good then why didn’t he sell it to us honestly? When did our government’s priority move from managing our affairs efficiently to getting as much out of us as possible? Who’s happy with the HST vs. PST decision we now have to make? It’s like a blind farmer walking through a cow field. Whichever way he goes there’s the same stuff on the ground. I propose a new political party that is actually transparent. It would be a world first. David Hubbard

Soon we will have to return our vote to either reinstate the PST or remain with the HST. It’s a hard decision to make. The BC Liberals arbitrarily made the move to HST without my input and it’s plain why. They were able to gain tax income from services, which they didn’t get under the PST. They presented it as a national requirement, never once admitting that it was their initiative until it was too late. Now they offer to drop taxes by two per cent over three years if we keep the HST. How do we know they won’t just plug the “hole” with another tax if we vote the HST down? They could arbitrarily add the services tax into the PST. It’s hard to trust.

More cat burglaries Described as ‘crimes of opportunity’ Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

Two more cat burglaries in Abbotsford since Tuesday have prompted police to issue further reminders to local residents to keep doors and windows locked. Police reported earlier this week that three robberies had occurred in which the thief had entered residences through sliding glass doors. Following those incidents, a burglar found different entry points at two other homes. One was on Tuesday afternoon in the 2900 block of Harris Road, where the robber used a ladder on the property to access a window left open on the second floor, and stole jewelry.

The second was on Wednesday in the 32600 block of Murray Street, where a garage door had been left partially open for ventilation. The thief pried the door open further, and then rifled through a car in the garage, making off with a GPS and other items. Const. Ian MacDonald said the incidents, which he described as “crimes of opportunity,” have taken place at various times. “The disturbing thing is that it doesn’t seem to matter whether it’s day or night. Where people are leaving doors or windows open for ventilation, that’s where the bad guys are sweeping in,” he said. Anyone with information is asked to call the Abbosford Police Department at 604-859-5225.

squads, swooped down on a vehicle on Highway 1 near Whatcom Road on June 21, 2010. About 20 kilograms of cocaine, estimated to be worth $1 million, was found in the trunk of the vehicle. Johnson had no prior criminal record. John Bustos, 28, was charged with trafficking in cocaine as part of an investigation targeting a dial-a-dope operation in Abbotsford in January of this year. At the time of his arrest, police alleged that Bustos was an associate of the United Nations Gang. They also said he had been seen in the company of Duhre Group members. Bustos’ charge was stayed Wednesday in Abbotsford provincial court. Crown counsel has up to one year to reinstate charges after they are stayed.

Province warned about sheriff cuts Jeff NAGEL

Black Press

The provincial government had advance warning from a senior official several weeks ago that cuts to the number of sheriffs guarding court houses could spark trouble in the justice system. In a May 31 letter to B.C.’s chief justices, copied to the deputy Attorney General, Assistant Deputy Minister Rob Wood noted full-time staff levels in the court services branch had already been cut nine per cent since 2008/09. “These fiscal changes have made it progressively more difficult to maintain operational service levels in both court security and court administration,” Wood said. Deeper cuts took effect at the beginning of June and Wood’s letter set out minimum service levels for court registries and sheriffs, including a system of roving sheriffs to spread staff further. Wood’s letter indicated the number of court clerks has also been cut and the min-

istry would respond by reassigning court registry staff to act as clerks as needed. He cautioned those levels would not be sustainable for long. Wood also noted it would be up to judges to gauge the security risk and decide if they can operate without a dedicated sheriff using the rover system. The elimination of the equivalent of 34 full-time deputy sheriffs caused delays in several trials last month when some judges refused to let their trials proceed without a sheriff. By late June, Attorney General Barry Penner – after hearing directly from judges about their security concerns – pledged to reverse the cuts to sheriffs’ hours. But the cut hours have not been permanently restored and are only being scheduled a week at a time so far, said Dean Purdy, spokesman for the union representing sheriffs. “We’re concerned that they’re so keyed

into the budgetary side of things they’re going to let the court system slide rather than truly fund the

system,” he said. Purdy said two of the most senior managers in the system are filling in for sheriffs

in Victoria because of the lack of deputy sheriffs. “You can’t do justice on the cheap,” he said.

A Friendly Welcome Awaits You

The Swiss Chalet Story! Swiss Chalet is all about real food made fresh by real people. That’s why we’ve been a Canadian favourite ever since our doors ďŹ rst opened way back in 1954. Our rotisserie chicken is made fresh on premise every day; it’s slow roasted to perfection and needless to say, it never sees the inside of a freezer. Our fries are hand-cut right here in our kitchen from fresh Canadian potatoes. Our famous Chalet dipping

sauce is simmered on premise daily so you can always be sure it’ll taste as good as you remembered. And our grilled to order ribs are marinated in-house to make them fall-offthe-bone tender. Truth is, at Swiss Chalet you’ll always know your food was made fresh by real people. And they made it just for you. 32470 South Fraser Way 604-864-4002

A deep empathy for the physically disabled has prompted a local high schooler to establish a wheelchair tennis program in Abbotsford. Anthony Iliev, a 16-year-old tennis player who recently finished his Grade 11 year at Mennonite Educational Institute, is the driving force behind the Aces on Wheels program, which runs on Monday afternoons from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the MEI tennis courts. “You recognize these people from the time you’re a little kid – ‘Mommy, why is that man in a wheelchair?’” Iliev said. “It’s not fair to see them like that. “I feel that I need to help these people, because I’m so blessed to have these legs of mine and be free of all physical barriers.” Iliev, who helped the MEI tennis team to a bronze medal at AA high school provincials this past season, came up with the idea for a wheelchair tennis program in the spring

Anthony Iliev is the driving force behind the Aces on Wheels program. after noticing there was no such initiative in Abbotsford. He got his wheelchair tennis coaching certification, drew up plans for the course, and pitched it to the BC Wheelchair Sports Association (BCWSA). The provincial body came on board, and loaned Iliev a pair of sport wheelchairs to help him get started. Keeping the participa-

tion costs low is a priority to Iliev. The eight-week program, which opened on July 4 and runs through the end of August, charges just a $10 membership fee for people who are not already members of the BCWSA. Existing members will be charged $5. For more information on Aces on Wheels, call 604-7684565.

WANNA BE

We mortals sometimes question the wisdom of His love. For no heartache compares with the death of one small child, Who does so much to make our world, Seem so wonderful and mild. Perhaps God tires of calling the aged to His fold, So He picks a rosebud before it can grow old. God knows how much we need them, And so He takes but few, To make the land of heaven more beautiful to view. Believing this is difficult Still somehow we must try, The saddest word mankind knows will always be Goodbye. So when a little child departs, We who are left behind must realize God loves children, Angels are hard to find.
