University wait list hits a new high
PLANNING FOR CHANGE Students involved in preparing university district concept A5
5,800 students queued for courses, 21 per cent more than last year Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News
Student demand for courses at the University of the Fraser Valley is outpacing the growth of the university. Waiting lists are getting longer. On Thursday afternoon the university held orientation for almost some 900 new students. They toured the buildings led by student guides, visited pavilions that offered information about departments, learned about student life, and lined up for lunch. Most of them have been queued up to get their courses, as well. The number of wait-listed students has soared to 5,800, which is 21 per cent higher than last year, and almost 50 per cent higher than in 2009. “It’s a good problem to have, but it is a problem,” said Eric Davis, UFV’s vice-president academic and provost. “That’s a lot of people who are potentially dissatisfied.” The school enrolled more than 16,000 students last year. Most of those on wait-lists are firstyear students, while those in fourth year are generally able to get the courses they need. In a story about this issue in February, students told The News that lineups meant considerable disruption in their lives. Some students reported getting only two of the five courses they needed, and

Workers scoop up $3.3 million
A group of 22 construction workers mainly from Abbotsford and Langley claimed a $3.3 million 6/49 jackpot Wednesday afternoon at the B.C. Lottery Corporation’s Vancouver office. The group’s ticket was purchased Aug. 24 at the Red Apple Grocery on Marshall Road in Abbotsford. Each member of the crew – who work at Rempel Bros. Concrete in Langley – will receive a cheque for $149,000. Wayne Vander-Hoek of Abbotsford is the organizer of the group lottery pool. “I got a call telling me that our group had won,” he said. “I didn’t know whether to laugh or start crying.” Seven of the winners are from Abbotsford, eight are from Langley and the rest are from Surrey, White Rock, Delta and 100 Mile House. A BCLC release did not provide names.

UFV funding relief unlikely From A1
the setbacks would mean more time needed to get their education – and delays in starting their careers. There is no relief in sight. Funding is the issue, and the government has not announced any changes. “They’ve got a $3-billion hole to cover in the province’s budget after the HST referendum,” Davis pointed out. “It’s a tough moment to be needing government funding.” He said the school does what it can. Last year it accepted 104 per cent of the admissions it received provincial funding for. This year that is forecast to rise to 105 per cent. Davis said a partial solution would be a tuition hike, but the province
will not allow any increase over the rate of inflation (approximately two per cent). Government funding covers only about 54 per cent of the annual budget, while tuition covers about 23 to 24 per cent of the costs. “Raising it would give us much more flexibility,” said Davis, adding that UFV is among the most affordable universities. At some point, provincial help will be needed to expand UFV, because another problem is the university population is outgrowing its campus facilities. “We’re running out of physical space,” said Davis. Officer assaulted, man charged
Vikki HOPES
Abbotsford News
A 66-year-old man has been charged after allegedly punching an Abbotsford Police officer and attempting to take his Taser on Tuesday night. Jagir Singh, who has no previous criminal history, appeared in court Wednesday and was charged with assaulting a police officer, uttering threats, failing to remain at the scene of a crash, and attempting to disarm an officer. Const. Ian MacDonald said police received a report at about 10:45 p.m. that the driver of a 1993 Mazda 626 had crashed into a 2006 Honda Civic in the vicinity of
Ponderosa Street and Upper Maclure Road. The man then attempted to leave the scene, but the crash had taken off one of the front wheels of his car, and sparks were flying from the wheel well as he accelerated. MacDonald said the officer tried to get the driver to turn off the vehicle and step out of his car. Instead, the man threatened the officer, began “punching and grabbing” him, and tried to remove his Taser, MacDonald said. He said the suspect was 50 to 75 pounds heavier than the officer, who called for backup. When the second officer arrived, the man was pepper-sprayed and then handcuffed. MacDonald said alcohol was ruled out as a factor in the incident.

Planning ‘U-district’ Final report this fall on major commercial project
Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News
In future years, back to school will not only bring the University of the Fraser Valley to life, but September will spark up a new commercial hub in Abbotsford. The creation of a university district is still in its conceptual stages, but a formal plan is nearing completion. It will be before Abbotsford council for adoption in late September or early October, said Jay Teichroeb, the city’s general manager of economic development and planning. He called the proposed university district an “area in transition,” where older, “low-intensity industrial uses” will eventually give way to services aimed at university students and faculty.

Students want housing that is both affordable and located “just off campus,” so it is not subject to the same rules and regulations as on-campus housing, which is shared accommodation, with private bedrooms but shared bathrooms and common areas. UFV got its first dormitory in 2006, with 204 beds. Toews estimates the university will eventually need to build a total of 500 on-campus beds, and there Continued on A6

WebTalk Distracted drivers
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Do you illegally talk and text while driving despite the new laws?
It’s pretty hypocritical though that we spend so much time and effort on reminding young people and young drivers to be aware of their actions and not take selfish, stupid chances that could result in injury or death, but we have a whole group of experienced, so called-adult drivers who brazenly yak away on their smartphones and text as they’re driving. What kind of message does this give to young people about taking the responsibility of driving, or responsibility for anything, seriously ?
To answer, go to abbynews.com
LAST WEEK, WE ASKED:
Will the federal NDP recover from the loss of leader Jack Layton?
Rorchach13 It is true that it is hard to respect a law when a police car passes you and the officer at the wheel is talking on the cell phone. If your lights aren’t on, at least pull over while you talk on the phone. It can’t be any safer for you to talk on the phone while speeding to get somewhere than it is for any other driver.

On Point My teen daughter has marked a key milestone in her young life. Among “coming of age” moments, it’s right up there with sweet 16, learning to drive, and being able to vote. She got a cellphone. Big whup, you say? Hey, when you’re almost 14, and going into “real” high school, having a phone is huge. Major. Momentous. That’s not why I agreed to it, though. There had to be more justification for a personal phone than just the Grade 9 coolness factor. I agonized over it. The advantages were clear. We could get hold of our daughter whenever necessary, without having to chase around for friends’ numbers. If she needed a ride, or a pick-up time had changed, she could let us know. And, if she was in a situation in which parental
aid and extraction were required, she could call without having to ask someone for a phone. And then there were the downsides… Cost, of course, but that’s pretty minimal if the plan is limited. The bigger objection was the danger of turning my kid into a version of the teen texting zombies – the kids who hang around, constantly looking at their phones, thumbing away obsessively. They can’t even put the devices in a pocket or purse for a moment. They have to hold them. I think if they were forcibly separated from their phones, they might go into spasms, or enter a catatonic state. It’s frightening. And then there’s the extension of the whole social networking thing. We struggled mightily against Facebook. At one point, I would rather have had a nuclear radiation leak in my house than Facebook. But the concept eventually became part of my work life, and I succumbed to the great brain drain. So, anyway, I initially thought a
standard phone would suffice. After all, I just wanted to be able to call her, and vice versa. Just a simple flipphone would be fine. Teen response: Blank look through half-lowered eyelids. She was envisioning a BlastedBerry. OK, maybe I’d consider that. But no data plan.
This would have to be solved by my finely honed parenting skills. Frantic wail: “But what’s the point of having a Blightberry if you don’t have Internet?” Precisely. The phone salesman was helpful. He could supply a free BonkBerry, and an inexpensive plan that just provided talking … and texting... How about a plan with no texting? “Daaaad!” Limited texting then.
The salesman pointed out that kids will text her, regardless of the limit, and then we’d have to remortgage the house. Who knew? OK. This would have to be solved via my finely honed parenting skills, and carefully chosen diplomatic language that has brought us this far through early teenhood with great success. “Abuse this phone, and it is so gone! Exceed your phone minutes, or start incessant texting, and you will get a little plastic walkie-talkie!” She understands that sometimes, victories are measured in degrees. So, after some further subtle negotiation, we exited with a DingleBerry, a limited phone plan, and an appreciative, pleased teen who, I noticed the other day as we were walking together through the mall, was holding her precious phone in her hand. I broke into a cold sweat. Mind you, yesterday at the office, I got a text. “Hey dad, when r u gonna B home?” It had a nice ring to it, so to speak.

letters Self-inflicted pain Congratulations to the people of B.C. Your face certainly looks much better without a nose. It is very difficult to credit the idea that there is such a thing as common sense. When someone does something for your greater good, does it make sense to undo that act whatever the cost, short term and long term? So you got a little payback to the Liberals by reversing the HST. I hope you will be overjoyed at all the attendant costs you will be suffering for the forseeable future. Yes, I was miffed at the way that the HST was introduced, but to inflict pain and suffering on oneself to show them you cannot be pushed around is just ludicrous. Garry Schindel

ENVISION CONCERT IN THE PARK SERIES
Noise exposure Abby News just published another excellent letter by J. White on Aug. 26, who once more clearly pointed out the numerous health problems resulting from noise exposure, all of which can never be over-emphasized. Yet they are stubbornly ignored, a mistake that all society is paying a price for through ever-rising health care costs and many social problems. That cannon battles are now being fought in court is but one pathetic symptom of a growing problem that could be avoided with proper regulation and some thoughtfulness and consideration. Very unfortunately, such virtues are ever harder to come by, certainly in the berry fields. Hans Schmid, Right to Quiet Society

Auction at the PNE. Lepp Farm Market, a family owned business, showed incredible support to the young participants of the PNE’s popular event, which sees more than 600 young people from across BC participate. When the last gavel fell, Lepp Farm Market had
purchased $25,000 in 4H project animals, including the reserve champion beef steer, for which they paid $5 per pound, for a total of $7,425. M i e r a u Construction of Abbotsford also spent $25,000 on livestock at the event, including purchasing the Champion
Beef Steer for $7.75 per pound for a total of $10,013. The money goes to 4-H members and/or their families. “It is fantastic to see the local business community come out and support these young kids,” said PNE Agricultural Committee chair John Friesen.

Blue bags explained It’s a frequent question posed by new Abbotsford residents. Why does this city use blue bags for recycling rather than the more common blue boxes for paper, carboard and other items? Tracy Kyle, Abbotsford’s director of water and solid waste, said the blue bag system is easier for homeowners, because all recyclables go into one bag. The bin system puts more responsibility on the homeowner to sort recyclables. In Surrey, for example, residents must sort recyclables into blue boxes, as well as blue and yellow bags for newspapers and mixed papers. Abbotsford and Mission’s recycling is collected en masse and hand-sorted on a conveyer belt at the Abbotsford-Mission Recycling Depot. Approximately 17,000 metric tonnes of recyc-
lables are diverted from the landfill each year. The blue bags are also recycled. They’re the same material that sandwich bags and other plastics are made of, which are also recyclable. Kyle says the blue bag system also does a better job of keeping discarded newspapers dry. “If it comes in all wet, it’s not worth as much. This keeps the value of the paper high.”

WELCOME BACK To Students & Parents!
On behalf of the Abbotsford Board of Education, it is a privilege to welcome students, staff, parents and our community back into our schools for another year. Once again our schools will open their doors to almost 19,000 students throughout the Abbotsford School District. We hope the 2011-1012 school year will be a year of discovery and learning for our students. The Abbotsford School District is well known for the amazing variety of options and choice programs. We hope that these opportunities help meet the individual learning needs of many students and their families. This year, our district is led by a new Superintendent, Mr. Kevin Godden, and we look forward to his leadership alongside Secretary-Treasurer Mr. Ray Velestuk and their respective management teams. We would like to commend our hard-working and dedicated employees for the hours of work you commit to making our district one we can all be proud of. We also want to recognize the enormous contribution of parents in the many ways you help support our students and our district. We all have a part to play in the education of children and, through our combined efforts, to see them achieve success. Together, we are providing a dynamic learning environment for all.

More sheriffs hired to avert trial delays
The province is hiring and training 36 new auxiliary sheriffs in a move expected to help avoid further trial delays from insufficient courtroom security. It represents a net increase of 30 sheriffs over and above the government’s commitment in June to restore the hours of auxiliary sheriffs that had been cut in May. This spring’s reductions, equivalent to the loss of 34
full-time positions, and coupled with a shift to a system of roving on-call sheriffs, prompted several judges to raise safety and security concerns and postpone trials. Acting Attorney-General Shirley Bond said the new recruits should be on the job by December and will “help minimize the risk of court delays resulting from staff shortages going forward.” Sheriffs’ union spokesman Dean Purdy applauded the
increase. “This is a move in the right direction,” he said. “It will help to ease the pain in the court system.” But Purdy estimated B.C. will still remain 70 to 100 sheriffs short of the number it had roughly three years ago, before their ranks were reduced through attrition. Fifteen of the new recruits will serve in the Lower Mainland.

This spring’s reductions, equivalent to the loss of 34

Acting Attorney-General Shirley Bond said the new recruits should be on the job by December and will “help minimize the risk of court delays resulting from staff shortages going forward.” Sheriffs’ union spokesman Dean Purdy applauded the

Danielle Schmidt (right) and the UFV women’s soccer team are aiming to build on a 2010 campaign which saw them win the Canada West title and bronze at nationals.
Cascades won’t be a one-hit wonder
Enter to win
Abbotsford News
Coming off a breakthrough 2010 season, University of the Fraser Valley women’s soccer coach Rob Giesbrecht is well aware that the 2011 campaign brings a fresh set of challenges for his side. “We want our players to remember how good it felt to wear a Canada West gold medal, to wear a national bronze medal, to hoist a banner,” Giesbrecht said, contemplating the start of the regular season in
one week’s time. “But we also want them to remember the hard work – the blood, sweat and tears that went into last season.” In his first year at the helm of the Cascades, Giesbrecht presided over an impressive turnaround. The UFV women, who hadn’t tasted the playoffs in four previous Canada West seasons, stunned traditional heavyweights like Trinity Western and UBC en route to the conference title and went on to earn bronze at Continued on A20

Labour Day in Canada can be traced to a strike that took place in April of 1872. The Toronto Typographical Union was at the center of the Toronto Trades Assembly’s first significant demonstration for workers’ rights. Typographical Union workers went on strike to campaign for a nine-hour work day. An old custom prohibits the wearing of white after Labour Day. The explana-

Labour Day, Sept. 5, is a Canadian tradition Labour Day has been celebrated on the first Monday in September in Canada since the 1880s. Traditionally it was an occasion to campaign for, and celebrate workers’ rights. These still play a role for some Canadians, but for most it is the last summer long weekend before school starts, an opportunity for one last getaway, or to enjoy at home with family and friends.

tions for this tradition vary. The roots of the idea that people should not wear white after Labor Day appear to be shrouded in mystery, and the rule has been greatly relaxed since the 1950s and 1960s, when it was more heavily enforced. People who choose to wear white after Labour Day are no longer heavily criticized for the choice, and are sometimes embraced as fashion forward trendsetters.

nationals. Both accomplishments represented firsts for the UFV athletic department since moving up to the CIS in 2006. With eight returning starters from last year’s team, the Cascades women will likely boast a lofty perch in the CIS national rankings when they come out next week. Thus, they’ll play with a target on their backs that they’ve never had before. Giesbrecht is also cognizant that complacency could
become an issue – last year’s team was defined by a burning desire to win. But during training camp and preseason play, the Cascades bench boss hasn’t sensed that his team’s hunger has been blunted. “For the returning players, last year’s success meant so much to them, they want to experience it again,” he said. “And for the younger players coming in, they’ve heard all about last year’s success, and they want it for themselves. We won’t be a complacent team.” The Cascades’ performanc-
es in the preseason seem to support Giesbrecht’s analysis. The UFV women have gone 3-0-2 against CIS and NCAA teams in exhibition play, including an undefeated road trip to Ontario last week that included wins over McGill and Ottawa. Goalie Chantelle Biagioni, striker Ellen Kuyer, midfielder Megan Webster and defender Emma Broadfoot, who is returning from a knee injury, form the veteran core of the 2011 Cascades. Giesbrecht’s 11-member
recruiting class is highlighted by a trio of rookie starters. Danelle Ruschke and Samantha Gregory are the starting centre backs, and they performed well on the Ontario trip. Blue-chipper Mackenzie Shopland, a product of the Vancouver Whitecaps prospects program, has looked right at home in the central midfield. Q The UFV women open the season on the road against the Manitoba Bisons (Sept. 10) and the Regina Cougars (Sept. 11).

Local rookies boost UFV soccer men Dan KINVIG
Abbotsford News
University of the Fraser Valley men’s soccer coach Alan Errington would love nothing more than for his squad to emulate the amazing breakthrough the Cascades women’s side staged last season. And the biggest thing the UFV men require as they seek their first-ever Canada West playoff berth, accord-
ing to the veteran bench boss, is a little bit of belief. “You can’t just flick a switch and say, ‘Yeah, we believe we’re good,’ Errington said. “You have to earn that. It sometimes just takes a game or an incident or something where you dig deep and get something out of it. Then the belief starts to come. “It’s inspiring, because the women have gotten over that hurdle. I think we’re
still searching for that, but it’ll only take the once. And once you get in the playoffs, it’s anybody’s game. In terms of talent, Errington has plenty at his disposal this season. He’s particularly excited about the addition of nine players from the Magnuson Ford Mariners FC under-18 side, which he also coaches. The Mariners won the B.C. ‘A’ Cup in July, and they’re headed to the na-
tional championships in Fredricton, N.B. from Oct. 5-10. Fortunately, that’s a bye week for UFV. In order to maintain the Mariners’ chemistry, Errington has had them scrimmage against the UFV veterans on several occasions, which has produced some intense, high-quality training sessions. He expects several of the Abbotsford rookies to make an instant impact
two years, because they play the right way, they know what they’re doing, and they buy into it. Key UFV upperclassmen include striker Craig Robinson, midfielder Sasa Plavsic, and defender Trevor O’Neill, who will serve as team captain. Q The Cascades face a pair of stiff tests to open the Canada West season, as they visit Trinity Western (Sept. 9) and UBC (Sept. 10).
with the university side, most notably defender Colton O’Neill, who played every minute during the Cascades’ recent threegame exhibition tour in California. “With the boys from the under-18s, they just slot right in, Errington said, noting they’re already familiar with the structure he wants to see. “In some cases, they’re ahead of boys who have been here one or

KILBY Helen Mar. 7, 1949 Aug. 24, 2011
GASPARINI Marie Winifred (Wheeler) November 1929 ~ August 2011
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Marie, at the age of 81. She left this world August 26th, to join the true love of her life, her beloved husband, Ernie. She will be fondly remembered by her children; Diana MacKay (Cameron), Anita Gasparini (Tom), and Lindsey Gasparini (Julie); her six grandchildren; Caroline, Trevor, Jillian, Carmine, Erica, and Giovanna; and her furry faced companion of the past 18 years, Tigger. Marie was born and raised in Vancouver and, after marrying Ernie, they settled in Abbotsford in 1959 to raise their family. She was a hard working woman who loved the outdoors, was an avid gardener, loved animals, and treasured her time on the family farm. Prior to Ernie’s death in 1987, Marie enjoyed fishing, skiing, curling, bowling, entertaining friends and family at home, travelling, and spending time with Ernie at their second home on Mayne Island. In her later life, she spent many years golfing at Ledgeview and in Palm Desert where she spent the winter months. Marie was feisty, and her greatest legacy will always be her message of hard work, no complaining, and living every day with zest and laughter. A celebration of Marie’s life will take place on Saturday, September 17th, 2011 from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. at Henderson’s Fraser Valley Funeral Home at 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the B.C. Lung Association or Fraser Valley Child Development. Tributes and condolences may be left at: www.hendersonsabbotsfordfunerals.com
