The crowd of about 500 walked silently through the streets of an Abbotsford neighbourhood Sunday afternoon, following religious leaders in flowing robes. A cross and the Holy Bible were carried at the front of the line. Most of the neighbours glanced at the solemn crowd and then returned to their lawn-mowing and garden-tending, likely not realizing the significance of the procession. It was what Rev. Mike Stewart, rector of St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, had referred to, in the service that preceded the march, as an “historic occasion.” The event was the culmination of a years-long battle between St. Matthew’s – as well as three other Vancouver churches – and the Diocese of New Westminster, stemming from the issue of same-sex blessings. St. Matthew’s broke away from the Anglican Church of Canada (ACC) to join the Anglican Network in Canada (ANiC) in 2008, maintaining that allowing the blessings is contrary to core Anglican doctrine. The diocese continues to operate under the ACC, which favours same-sex blessings, and won two court battles – in B.C. Supreme and the B.C. Court of Appeal – that ruled the church buildings and properties belong to them. But it wasn’t until the Supreme Court of Canada dismissed the parishes’ application for an appeal last month that the matter was concluded. On Sunday, St. Matthew’s held its farewell service in the church it has occupied on Guilford Drive since 1977, and then proceeded to its new shared space at Grace Evangelical Baptist Church on McMillan Road. Stewart referred to the court battle, saying the move to a new location is “the consequence” of the congregation and clergy staying true to their convictions. “Our love for this building is great, but our love for Jesus Christ ... and our desire to maintain and uphold the great tradition of the Christian Church is greater,” he said.
JOHN MORROW Abbotsford News
The St. Matthew’s congregation is led by church leaders to their new location. Flanked by the stained glass windows behind him, Stewart led the congregation through the ceremonial farewell to each portion of the building. The parishioners were asked to turn and face each portion of the facility – including the music room, the prayer counselling room, the offices and the sanctuary – as they echoed Stewart’s words: “We say farewell.” Some members of the congregation dabbed their eyes, while others hugged their loved ones as they filed out of the building. At the new location at Grace Church, the mood was more upbeat, as clergy urged the parishioners to focus positively on the future and not hold grudges. “What seems to be a tragedy often turns out to be a great blessing from God,” said Archbishop Lazar Puhalo of the Orthodox community who was among the religious dignitaries in attendance. Geoff and Judy Horner who have
attended St. Matthew’s together since 1960, when it was located on Montvue Avenue in the downtown core, said the farewell was touching. They have fond memories of raising their three children – two daughters and a son – in the Guildford Drive church. Their eldest daughter was married there in the mid-’80s. “It’s been a focal point to go to that church. When you go for so long, it’s like home,” Judy said. Geoff, who began attending St. Matthew’s as a teenager before he met Judy, said it was difficult to leave behind the building, which the parishioners had raised the money to construct and later expand. But it was more important for the congregation to stand behind their principles, he said. “We’re not against homosexuality in the slightest, but we won’t bless their union and call it a marriage.” The Horners look forward to the future at their new location.

A property title search shows that the Facchins purchased the 4.4 acre property on Nov. 5, 2007 for $1.25 million. The site, which has two homes and several outbuildings, is now listed for $1.65 million. Although two men were arrested at the scene of the police
bust in April 2011, they were later released, and no criminal charges have yet been laid. However, a civil forfeiture claim can proceed on the basis that unlawful activity occurred on the property, regardless of whether charges have been laid or whether there has been a conviction. In May, a claim was filed against a three-storey home on Siskin Drive in Abbotsford. That property was also alleged to have been a grow-op in which the police seizure included 1,000 plants, as well as weapons and $4,000 cash. The B.C. Civil Forfeiture Act
was passed in 2006, permitting the provincial government to apply to court to obtain property that was obtained through criminal activity. If a judge decides a property must be forfeited, it can then be sold and the proceeds used by the government for victim compensation, crime prevention activities, crime remediation activities, and administration of the act. Since January of this year, police in B.C. have referred more than 60 new files, and more than 200 cases are ongoing. The net value of these assets is $22.6 million.
Huge crowds for Berrybeat

For two-year-old Carson Mitchell it was all about the pancakes, strawberries and whipped cream served up by the Kiwanis at this year’s Berrybeat Festival.
The 30th annual Berrybeat Festival drew huge crowds to Downtown Abbotsford this weekend. Event co-ordinator Tina Stewart estimates that approximately 40,000 people turned out, 10,000 more than the past few years, to fill the streets of Montrose and Essendene on Saturday and Sunday. She attributes it to the great weather and numerous attractions, including fresh foods, magic shows, musical entertainment and dance performances. This year also marked the first fashion shows,
which went over extremely well, said Stewart. In addition, merchants hosted their own events, including craft making and a show and shine car show. Another hit this year was the bike valet service, said Stewart. Overall, the festival was a hit. “We had many families attend, and a lot of people who said this was their 30th event,” said Stewart. “And many said it was their first. So it was a great combination, and really nice to see.”

The Abbotsford-Huntingdon border crossing was closed for three hours late Thursday evening, after border officers found U.S. military explosives on a vehicle coming from the U.S. The vehicle was hauling a trailer from a moving company, and in a secondary examination Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) staff found a claymore and detonator, five hand grenades, an undeclared handgun and 19 high-capacity magazines. The explanation from the two American men in the vehicle was that the explosives were inactive, used only for training purposes. Border officers weren’t able to confirm that in their examination, and called the RCMP explosives disposal team to deal with the potential threat. The border was closed from approximately 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., until the RCMP was able to confirm that the explosives were indeed no longer active. The handgun and magazines were seized, and the two men were turned back to the U.S.
UNEMPLOYMENT DOWN IN ABBY The unemployment rate dropped significantly in Abbotsford last month, falling from 8.9 per cent in May to 8.6 per cent in June, according to a Statistics Canada report on Friday. Nationally, the unemployment rate remained at 7.4 per cent. Employment rose across Canada for the third straight month, with 28,000 jobs created, but the unemployment rate remained unchanged as more people joined the job market.

The residential property of an Abbotsford restaurant owner has become the subject of a civil forfeiture claim in B.C. Supreme Court. Civil court documents allege that Mario Facchin’s property in the 33400 block of Huntingdon Road, also owned by Elena Facchin, was used as a marijuana grow operation. Mario, 48, is the owner of a restaurant in west Abbotsford. Police searched the Facchin property on April 1, 2011, and found “a variety of controlled substances,” including 600 marijuana plants, as well as growing equipment such as ballasts, lights and timers, according to the notice of civil claim filed Thursday by the director of civil forfeiture. Also found were paraphernalia for “controlled substance usage,” production, cultivation and trafficking, the documents state. The claim states that the owners benefited from the proceeds of crime, as “either or both defendants did not have

An intersection safety camera has now gone “live” at Marshall and McCallum roads in Abbotsford, as part of the second phase of a province-wide program. The upgraded and expanded Intersection Safety Camera program has now gone live at 35 more sites. The digital cameras detect and photograph vehicles running a red light. Two other red-light cameras are located in Abbotsford – at Sumas Way and Lonzo Road, and at Maclure and Clearbrook roads. “We’ve seen too often the seriousness of intersection crashes. The expansion of this program will help us make roads safer by targeting those who run red-light lights and put others at risk,” said Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald. The first set of 35 upgraded cameras went into use in January. Another 70 sites have been identified for the safety cameras and are expected to be operational by the end of 2011, bringing the total to 140 across B.C. A violation ticket carries a $167 fine, which can be reduced by $25 if paid within 30 days. Vehicles that have entered the intersection before the light turns red will not receive a ticket. Drivers do not receive penalty points for redlight camera offences.

Pigeon thief gets 60 days A man charged on Canada Day with the heist of 365 birds – mostly fancy pigeons – has been sentenced to 60 days in jail. William James Balice, 29, pleaded guilty to possession of stolen property, break and enter, and breach of probation in connection with the theft in the 2700 block of Lefeuvre Road on June 28. He was sentenced Friday in Abbotsford
provincial court. The stolen show birds included breeds such as the American roller and the muffed tumbler. Balice was found in possession of some of the birds on his west Abbotsford property and had listed them for sale on craigslist. Police said the birds were valued at $60 to $100 each. Also on Friday, Balice pleaded guilty to a previous charge
of driving while prohibited, and was given a five-year driving ban. He still faces charges of theft and trespassing related to an incident in Maple Ridge on March 29, along with four other people. Police continue to investigate a rash of livestock and fowl thefts that have taken place in the Fraser Valley since last fall.

Abbotsford Police have caught a suspected cat burglar in connection with a series of robberies last week. Clayton Brian Kopeck, 18, was arrested Friday and charged with the break-and-enter of three residences – on July 3, 4 and 5 – in which jewelry, cash and electronics were stolen. Police had reported that a culprit was entering homes through sliding glass doors
while the occupants were sleeping. Const. Ian MacDonald said several individuals with a history of such crimes were identified in Abbotsford, and forensic evidence, such as fingerprinting, led them to the suspect. Kopeck was arrested in another Fraser Valley community, although MacDonald wouldn’t say exactly where. He said because of the public safety risk, the offences were given a high priority by the

Role will change July 5 isn’t likely to leave a lasting mark on history. However, the end of Canada’s mission in Afghanistan is a historic moment for our nation. The book is closed on our decade-long involvement and it will take at least as much time before we’ll truly understand what our soldiers were able to achieve. In 2007, Master-Cpl. Colin Bason of Abbotsford was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan. Other local soldiers, many who served with the Abbotsford Airfield Engineers, were part of the effort there. The question now is what’s next for Canada’s military? After spending so much time and resources in Afghanistan the culture of our forces has been indelibly shaped by this experience. Some of the attention is now focused on Libya and its ongoing civil war. But this does not appear to be the kind of endless conflict that was Afghanistan.
And then there are plans for a rampedup military presence in the Arctic. This will also take tremendous resources but will be an entirely different kind of mission. The war in Afghanistan cost Canadians more than $11 billion, a number that could double as we deal with the legacy of returning veterans. Despite our departure the work continues, including by a contingent of Canadians tasked with training Afghans to take charge of their own security. Elsewhere in the world we can only guess where the next trouble spot will be. We might not make a big deal come next July 5, but Canadians can take pride in the work done by our military personnel over the last decade and feel confident that whatever comes next, they’ll make a difference on the world stage. - Black Press
A ‘refreshing’ attempt at bug control Mark
Rushton On the
Other Hand At the front of my house is a shady little patch of grass that, due to size and relative accessibility, is too difficult to mow with the lawn tractor. Thus when the area needs trimming I drag out the old electric mower, connect the cord to the garage and, after eliminating the various dog deposits, make it look ship-shape again. Yesterday was one of those days but, thanks to the current invasion of mosquitoes, the 10-minute task in the shady, wind-blocked garden was more than aggravating. As I pulled the little mower back and forth, concentrating primarily on swatting at the aerial annoyances, I heard a distinctive clunk interrupt the normal whir of the blades. Dog doo isn’t that hard and, familiar with running over things, my mind exceeded my speed of sight. I had run over the power cord, though the mower was still operating. Sticking forth from the slightly mangled cable was a green wire – I’d only slashed the ground con-
nection. Dangerous perhaps, but it still allowed me to finish the grass cutting before unplugging and proceeding with a repair. Remediation of the wire took place in the garage . . . it was out of the sun and thus cooler, and that’s where my tools were. However, it was also where the mosquitoes chose to relocate. Frustration, accompanied by rather vociferous exhortations of the type not found in newspapers, accompanied the repair as the little blighters tried to penetrate face and hands that were engaged in concentrating on cutting the wire, carefully removing the insulation and reattaching the receptacle. Despite the annoyance, the damaged portion was cut off, dropped to the floor, the plug-in bit removed, the cut end retrieved between swats at the biting bugs and, with careful trimming and taping and screwing, the part was reattached … to the six foot long piece of discarded and damaged cord. At that point of realization, of course, the volume level of my annoyance escalated to the point that small children within three kilometers were probably rushed into the house by their mothers. At any rate, with small bumps from the bites appearing on wrists and face,
the cord was eventually rehabilitated, and with it came the resolve to tackle the bugs. I’d recalled an email from a friend that described a cure to mosquito invasions – spray them with Listerine. Probably a myth but what the ‘hey’ . . . I was at the point of trying anything, aside from generous applications of DEET. So off to Walmart for a bottle of the mouth-
...armed with a Listerine-filled spray bottle and a can of cold beer, I settled down on the deck... wash, with a stop at the adjacent Dollar Store for a couple of cheapo sprayers. I arrived home with my prizes, only to have the maintainer of practicality in my home scoff, check out “snopes.com”, and say “see, even this says using that stuff is nonsense!” You know what they say about a fool and his money . . . but I had the ingredients and thought I’d at least give it a try. So, armed with Listerine-filled spray
bottle and a can of cold beer, I settled down on the deck to await my, and the mosquitoes, fate. Sure enough after a few minutes, along came a hummer followed shortly by a refreshing mist. The ‘mozzie’ plummeted to the deck, down but not dead. After three more attacks, I determined that though the spray doesn’t appear to kill them, with all the alcohol contained in the mouth wash they are probably dead drunk, but with decidedly ‘fresh breath’, before they hit the floor. And after finishing another can of beer, it was also suggested that I could use the spray on myself. As for this year’s abundance of mosquitoes, aside from the weather, I believe it is in direct correlation to the dramatic drop in the number of swallows. A year or two ago I noted a decline in the winged bugcatchers, and this year it is significant. Instead of hundreds of them darting and swooping over the lawn and fields there are now only a few around. Previously I’ve had 20 or so nests in the barn, this year only three. That does not portent well for the future of natural control of bug invasions, or our environment, though it might do wonders for purveyors of mouthwash and myths. markrushton@abbynews.com

Abbotsford News
An Abbotsford graduate will have her video showcased to Hollywood producers after winning at the 2011 Surrey Film Festival. Yale Secondary student Nikki Segovia topped the best animation category at the festival, with her entry titled ODDAY. Beyond receiving trophies, all of the top films will be screened at the Emerging Filmmakers Forum in Beverly Hills, California. ODDAY follows a young girl, played by Rachel Walker, through her day as she spreads colour and picks up unique items along the way. Segovia did the filming, editing and sound effects for the film. She was the festival’s only entry from Abbotsford, which saw close to 50 entries from 12 schools. Celebrating its fifth year, the event brought together aspiring filmmakers to watch the work of their peers, inspire one another and network. It showcases films in five categories: short film (post secondary and high school), public service announcement, sports interest and music video, animation, and screenwriting. To watch Segovia’s video along with the other winning entries, visit http://surreyfilmfest.ca/news/

Asked to recall his first trip to the Junior World Judo Championships, Brandon Jobb breaks into a sheepish grin. Last year, the 18-year-old Abbotsford athlete represented Canada at the World Juniors in Morocco, but was eliminated in the first round by an opponent from Germany. “It was a long way to travel for one fight,” Jobb recalled with a chuckle. “It was only about a minute and half, and he completely out-muscled me.” Jobb punched a return ticket to the Junior Worlds last week, winning his third consecutive Canadian junior national title in Sept-Iles, Que. He went undefeated in five matches en route to the gold in the under81 kilogram weight class. In October, he’ll fly to South Africa for his second crack at the Junior Worlds, and he believes he’s poised for bigger things this time around. “I’ve gotten a lot better over the last year,” he said. “I’ve done a lot of weight training, and I have more experience
By virtue of his victory at the Canadian junior championships last week, Brandon Jobb earned a berth to Junior Worlds in South Africa.

Cards stretch win streak to six Dan KINVIG
Abbotsford News
As the weather heats up, so too are the Abbotsford Cardinals. The local B.C. Premier Baseball League club solidified its grip on a playoff berth by sweeping four games on Vancouver Island on the weekend. The Cards swept the Parksville Royals on Saturday by scores of 1-0 and 8-6, then traveled to Nanaimo and
beat the Pirates 2-0 and 6-2 on Sunday. The Abbotsford squad leaped from eighth to sixth place in the BCPBL standings at 21-20, and they’re above the .500 mark for the first time this season. They’ve won six in a row, and eight of their last 10. In Saturday’s opener in Parksville, Steven Federau surrendered just three hits while going the full seven innings, striking out seven along the way. Ryan Lucky
scored the game’s lone run on a sacrifice fly from Max Chadsey. In the back half of the doubleheader, the Royals rallied from a 6-2 deficit in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. But the Cards bounced back to put two on the board in the top of the eighth, as Ryan Green and Federau crossed the plate, and relief pitcher Ryan Martin picked up the save. Tyler Dobos submitted
the Cards’ second pitching gem of the weekend, holding Nanaimo to five hits over seven innings in Sunday’s opener. Chadsey’s bat powered Abby to victory in the second game of the day – the centre fielder drove in four runs. The Cardinals have six games left in the regular season, and just one of them is at home. They host the North Delta Blue Jays on Thursday at 7 p.m. at DeLair Park.
Mariners topple Timbers, tie Tide Dan KINVIG
Abbotsford News
Their playoff hopes are still a long shot, but a late-season hot streak is at least allowing the Premier Development League men's side from Magnuson Ford Mariners FC to dream of the post-season. The Mariners went undefeated on a weekend road trip south of the border, knocking off the defending national champion Portland Timbers U23's 2-1 on Friday and battling the Tacoma Tide to a 1-1 draw on Sunday. Those results left the Mariners at 5-6-3 on the season, tied for fourth in the PDL's Northwest Division with Portland. Only the top two teams in the division make the playoffs, and with two games left in the regular season, the Abbotsford side is five points in arrears of the second-place Victoria Highlanders. They're mathemati-
cally alive, but require plenty of help, since Victoria has a game in hand. Regardless of how their playoff fate plays out, Mariners head coach Ian Knight has been pleased with a late-season surge which has seen the Mariners go 4-2-1 over their past seven games. "We've battled hard against some good teams," Knight noted. The Mariners upset the Timbers for the second time this season on the strength of a pair of highlight-reel goals in the first half from midfielder Juan Pablo Mora Perea and striker Danfi Parker. Perea struck a top-corner shot from 25 yards out to open the scoring, and after Portland equalized on a penalty kick, Parker scored on a spectacular volley to the far side of the goal to restore the lead. Goalie Andrew Kowan stood tall in the second half, making seven of his nine

Mosquito Control Update from the Fraser Valley Regional District Rain and continuous high-water levels on the Fraser River have led to an unusually large number of mosquitoes this summer, creating a major annoyance for many of this region’s residents. To address the extreme mosquito levels, the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) will be spending an additional $100,000 this summer on ramped-up control efforts. The FVRD’s mosquito control contractor (Morrow Bioscience Ltd.) has been working non-stop since early May to reduce mosquitoes and will continue doing so for as long as necessary.
Efforts to combat mosquitoes are ongoing and include: x On-the-ground larvicide* treatment of mosquito development sites. x Wide-scale aerial (helicopter) larvicide* treatment of sites that are inaccessible by foot or boat. To date
the FVRD has treated over 1200 hectares spanning from Abbotsford to Hope. x Continuously seeking out, monitoring, GPS-mapping and treating of known and new mosquito
development sites. x The FVRD is also making every effort to respond to the hundreds of emails and phone calls received
daily from the public during this unusually busy mosquito season. Larvicide* is a bacterial pesticide that is used to kill mosquitoes while they are still in the larval stage. It specifically targets mosquito larvae, and as used, is otherwise harmless to the environment. Adulticide is a chemical pesticide used to kill adult mosquitoes. Adulticiding, commonly referred to as “fogging”, is not a practice that is currently used in BC, as it is not considered to be an effective method of control. The FVRD does not conduct adulticiding.

As a member of the Abbotsford Heat last season, Aldergrove native Matt Keith was afforded the luxury of playing as close to home as possible. As of this fall, Keith could hardly be any farther away. He signed a one-year contract last week with Orebro, a club in Sweden’s second division. The 28-year-old forward chuckles when the geographical irony is mentioned to him. “It’s funny – my buddies are wondering why I have to leave so early, since I have to go over there the first week of August,” he said. “But I’ve been around here for 18 months now, so it’s not so bad. “It’s just part of the business. The way I look at it, I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to play (in Abbotsford). I’m proud of the way it went, and now it’s on to the next chapter.” Keith is coming off a solid season with the Heat – he paced the scoring-challenged squad with 35 points (20 goals, 15 assists)

Matt Keith has a one-year contract with Orebro, a club in Sweden’s second division. in 77 games. He was also the team’s AHL Man of the Year award nominee, recognizing his contributions to the local community and charitable organizations. Keith had talks with the NHL parent Calgary Flames about returning, but the two parties ended up parting ways. “They just decided to go another way,” said Keith, alluding to the Flames’ signing of AHL veterans like Ben Walter, Guillaume
Desbiens and Clay Wilson to two-way contracts. “I haven’t been on an NHL contract for three years now, and it was looking like, if anything, it was going to be another AHL contract from them (the Flames/Heat). “Where I am right now in my career, I’m looking forward to going over to Europe and starting the next chapter, seeing where that takes me.” Q Former Heat defenceman Keith Seabrook is also on the
move. The Delta native was traded to the Florida Panthers on Saturday in exchange for fellow D-man Jordan Henry. Seabrook, 22, was a frequent occupant of former head coach Jim Playfair’s doghouse during his sophomore pro campaign, and was loaned to the Manitoba Moose in late February in exchange for centre MacGregor Sharp. Henry, 26, has signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Flames.

Jobb, who recently graduated from Yale Secondary, will continue to train at the local club as he begins his studies
from fighting at different national training camps across Canada. “If I can win a few matches, that would be great. But if I had a chance to go to the medal round, that would be unbelievable.”
at the University of the Fraser Valley this fall. “I’m not sure how far judo will take me, since the funding isn’t always there,” said Jobb, who harbours dreams of one day representing Canada at the Olympics. “But I’m definitely going to try to go as far as I can.”

LOOKING FOR A NEW JOB?
Norma was an outstanding person! I met her when she was my grade 8 student in Abbotsford, 33 years ago. This was the time when her dear mother, whom I also knew and respected, passed away. Norma had a very happy early childhood, always friendly, helpful and industrious. As she grew older she became a dedicated Christian; this gave her a firm base in life’s struggles. She was always a great nature-lover and good hiker. Norma was very gifted in Art, especially in painting and knitting. She loved to play guitar. She earned the Silver Medal of the Duke of Edinburg Award presented in the Government House, Victoria. She was happy to be chosen together with other selected students across Canada for the excellent Katimavik program, a tremendous enrichment for all participants. Each student lived for some time in families of different cultural backgrounds, carried out worthwhile projects and stayed together in a fascinating sailing camp at the Pacific. After high school graduation in Abbotsford, she pursued further training and became an outstanding homemaker. Norma lived for some time on a reserve in Burns Lake where her two children were born. Together with a Home Economist, she composed an illustrated booklet: “How Leila’s Slippers were Made” relating the making of the moccasins from raw hide to the finished product. She returned with her children to Abbotsford where her father lives. After further studying, she became a practical nurse and continued to increase her medical knowledge by taking additional professional courses. She loved to work: caring for sick ones in her quiet, modest way. She also got involved with local school work in Crofton, where she lived happily with her caring husband for the last 7 years. There she took care of handicapped students, familiarizing herself with sign language. She had a good mutual relationship with the local aboriginal cultural centre. Norma fondly loved her two children and three grandchildren. Her spirit lives on, and her radiant personality remains close to everyone who knows her. By Edith Schendel
