A return to the PST would likely result in a layoff. Aircraft manufacturer Conair, one of the largest companies in Abbotsford, employing over 350 workers, has been able to expand its business and hire more people under the HST. Brad Sather, vicepresident of finance at Conair, said the PST was extremely complex and inefficient. The savings of the HST has allowed Conair to expand its workforce, buy more equipment and provide employee salary increases. “The benefits aren’t just going into the shareholders’ pockets,” he said. NewsBytes CHAIN REACTION A vehicle roll-over on Maclure Road early Thursday morning was followed by a three-car chain-reaction crash. The incident took place at about 1:30 a.m., when the driver of a 2003 red Ford sedan lost control of his vehicle, with the car flipping on to its roof in the eastbound lanes of Maclure Road near Trafalgar Street. Three other drivers observing the scene then got into a crash of their own. When police arrived, the driver of the roll-over was not present, but police found empty and full beer containers in the vehicle, said Const. Ian MacDonald.

Wanted man tracked to Hope Vikki HOPES
Abbotsford News
Abbotsford Police say a convicted sex offender who is on the lam has visited convenience stores in Deroche (east of Mission) and Hope. Const. Ian MacDonald said James Douglas Campbell, 60, was in Deroche last Wednesday. Police accessed banking information that showed he had used an ATM at a convenience store. Surveillance video confirmed that Campbell had been at the location. Campbell was next tracked to Hope, where he again used an ATM at a convenience store at about noon on Sunday. MacDonald said Campbell is now out of cash, and police are concerned that he could rely on others for money, transportation and accommodation. Campbell is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for violating his parole conditions after failing to return home on May 27. Speed a factor in highway fatality Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
High speed is believed to be the cause of a single-vehicle crash that killed a
32-year-old Abbotsford man Saturday night in Langley. RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen said three witnesses at the scene
stated they saw Jeremy Joseph Pinette, 32, travelling at about 160 km/h before his green Dodge Viper entered the grassy
median on Highway 1 at 248 Street. The vehicle rolled over and pinned him, killing him instantly. Pinette was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Thiessen said a Langley RCMP officer had first seen the Viper just before 10 p.m. travelling west on
56 Avenue towards 264 Street in Aldergrove. The officer turned around and activated his emergency lights, but the Viper was no longer in sight. The officer turned off his emergency equipment and did not pursue the car, Thiessen said. He then headed west along Highway 1 and
noticed traffic slowing at around 248 Street, where the Viper could be seen upside down in a ditch. Lower Mainland District Port Mann Traffic Services was dispatched to the scene. Media reports indicate Pinette was a Hells Angels associ-

He also estimates just a one per $35 million each year to run a new cent rate cut to the HST would offset PST office. “In fairness to the government, the impact of the new tax structure. any discussion of tax increases is But despite evidence the HST has added jobs and strengthened political suicide,” said Dvoracek. Currently, the HST adds seven per cent sales tax to roughly 17 per cent of purchases made by the average British Columbian, and costs the average family about $350 more per year, according to an independent panel. In May, Premier Christy Clark announced she would cut the HST two per cent by 2014 if it survives the referendum vote, scheduled to be held by mail-in ballot between June 24 and July 22. According to the government, the average family will see an overall tax reduction of about $120 per year when the HST rate reaches 10 per cent.
The harmonized sales tax was announced by the B.C. Liberals in July 2009, two months after the party was elected to its third majority government. It came into effect July 1, 2010, but was widely criticized by opponents, most notably former premier Bill Vander Zalm and his Fight HST petition initiative. By collecting the signatures of 10 per cent of registered voters in each of the province’s 85 ridings by July 5, 2010, the Fight HST campaign succeeded in forcing thenPremier Gordon Campbell to agree to hold a provincial referendum on repealing the HST and reinstating the former combination of seven per

Business as usual When it comes to the Canada Postal workers rotating strike action, one question is likely to be asked a lot. Something like this, perhaps: “Who would notice?” But the same factors that make regular “snail” mail less relevant are also likely to turn the action the postal workers’ union is taking into a long one, perhaps rivalling the epic postal strikes of the ‘70s and early ‘80s. The difference this time is that the union is in a far less strong bargaining position. Courier services and e-mail have cut deeply into Canada Post’s core business — even having bills arrive by e-mail is no longer uncommon, and paying bills electronically is nearing universality — so a postal strike no longer has the possibility of bringing commerce to a standstill. That’s not to say that Canada Post is unnecessary. Social assistance cheques of various kinds still arrive
via mail and, except for hand delivery, the mail is the most effective way of getting original copies of documents across the country. But what a strike will do is encourage people to make even more use of direct deposit, electronic communications and courier services as a substitute, hastening the transformation of Canada Post into just another commercial courier service, moving farther away from their prime position of being Canada’s official carrier. Both sides in this dispute have a lot to lose if a strike endures. We suggest both sides in this issue need to take a step back and consider how the public will react to a long strike … and then sit down at the table, and keep at the negotiations until they find a compromise acceptable to both parties. – Black Press
The worldwide ramifications of hitting ‘send’ Mark
Rushton On the
Other Hand The reaction I have noticed to the rotating strikes of Canada’s postal workers has been little more than a shrug. Other than bills, there is little thrill left when the postman knocks, or in my case, fills the little metal box at the corner. In fact, I can’t remember when I last received a personal letter in the mail ... nobody it seems, writes letters any more. On the other hand, every morning and throughout the day, messages flow into my email inbox. Lots of it is junk, but among the flotsam there is usually a note or two from friends. And should I ever take up the challenge of using Facebook or Twitter, I am certain the daily flow of personal commentary would increase dramatically. Thus, from a personal point of view and the electronic wizardry we have flocked to, Canada Post is taking on a greater sense of irrelevance with each
passing year. Writing a letter requires paper, pen, an envelope and about 60 cents to send it on its way, to arrive sometime within the next day or two, or occasionally a week or two. Additionally, one must be able to write legibly which my general scrawl is anything but. However, emails and the Internet send off clear and concise messages, so long as you can actually parse your words, in a flash – almost as quickly as speaking. I wouldn’t be surprised if emails, texting and so on even replace the phone for ‘real time’ conversations. As someone who advanced from a pencil, to an ancient Underwood manual typewriter, to electronic word processors, to computers, I have seen it all when it comes to putting down the written word. There is a wide-held belief that computers, emails and the like will create a paperless world, saving the planet’s forests and enhancing the health of all. Fax machines, of course, threw a bit of a twist into that, though today even they are used less frequently. Regardless, while governments and business still accumulate vast amounts of paper files, and newspapers rely more
and more on electronic publishing, it might be true that fewer trees are being sacrificed to the altar of communication. However, all is not well in the Internet world. It, in fact, relies mostly on ‘dirty power’, and it has an exceptional thirst. According to a fascinating full-page
The Internet is, if it were a country, the fifth largest consumer of power in the world. story in Saturday’s Vancouver Sun, the Internet is, if it were a country, the fifth largest consumer of power in the world. The Internet – actually the computer systems that drive it – consumes more power than do the entire populations and industrial outputs of India or Germany. And much of the power that is consumed, when you and I and a billion others send an email, Google a question, or do anything else on the keyboard of our computers, comes from the generating
and pollution-creating abilities of coalfired power stations. We in British Columbia, with our abundant lakes, rivers and mountains, enjoy the benefits of power generated essentially pollution-free. The rest of the world isn’t so fortunate, and thus must rely on nuclear or coal-fired generation, and with those come serious health consequences. Yet despite our relative piousness in this province, we contribute on a personal basis just as much as anywhere else on the planet each time we use our computers, because the servers that drive the Internet, and use all that power, are located in places other than B.C. And perhaps what makes this issue even more interesting is that it actually isn’t the computers that consume all the energy, but the cooling systems needed to maintain them when they are rushing about at light speed trying to locate an answer to your Googled question. But even with all that, will we return en masse to the handwritten word slipped into an envelope for the postie to deliver? Not a chance! If not the mailman, at least the trees will thank us. markrushton@abbynews.com

letters Concerns about pesticide Re: The letter in The News May 31, “Pesticides can be used safely.” Well, maybe they can. But unfortunately, obviously they are not always. This I know from my own observation in my own back yard. I have a walnut tree. And every year the ignorant people next door have to put their infernal poison right
beside where the food tree is growing, even though I told them twice don’t do that! What I find to be quite disturbing is the inappropriate use of the poison juice, particularly in the vicinity adjacent to my back yard, and around such places as elementary schools. A short time ago, I saw a worker out there, spraying the perimeter between

the grass and the sand area in the elementary school yard. Now I notice that the grass is brown all along the fence line, and around the trees. The children are made to walk round the school yard every day to get their exercise to be healthy. How indiscreet to have school children out there stomping through the poison. I wish to commend both the premier and the opposition for their wise consideration to legislate a ban on cosmetic pesticides. If the manufactur-
ers of such noxious stuff as weed killers were to go broke, it wouldn’t hurt my feelings at all. I have come across several knowledgeable people who have the opinion that pesticides and herbicides contain cancer causing chemicals. The concerned citizens have a reason to be concerned. If people are too lazy to use a weedeater, then I suggest they quit their job, and leave it to a person who knows better than to use poison so indiscreetly. Ron Penner

‘True sport’ funds summer activities Six activity projects will be funded this summer by the “True Sport Foundation.” The Abbotsford C o m m u n i t y Foundation was one of four such organizations across Canada chosen this year by the True Sport Foundation as a pilot project. A special grants committee composed of community volunteers and board members, met earlier this month to review applications submitted by a number of local organizations and the committee distributed
approximately $20,000 last week to fund the projects. Local applicants were required to provide matching funds that could include “gifts in kind” and volunteer time. In total, over $43,000 in matching funds will be contributed to these projects. “The matching requirement was an important element in the process as was the criteria that the projects include working with other partners because they ensure that there is something left
once the events or programs have been completed. That’s what the True Sport Foundation was hoping for – a way for relatively small amounts of money to leverage more lasting outcomes,” said Susan McAlevy, executive director, Abbotsford C o m m u n i t y Foundation. The projects funded include: Heat in the Street: Abbotsford firefighters, police and ambulance personnel are working together to stage three impromptu “block parties” in
local neighbourhoods this summer that will include street hockey, an obstacle course for the younger children, emergency vehicles open for residents to explore, and home safety tips. Geocaching 101 for Youth: The Abbotsford Youth Commission is introducing the sport of geocaching to the youth of Abbotsford by holding an eightweek program this summer. Geocachers use GPS units to find treasure stashes all over the world and
there are thousands of stashes located in Abbotsford. Led by two youth leaders hired for the program, youth will participate in eight different treasure hunts, learning everything from teamwork to navigational skills. Yarnbombing: This is an active urban art experience involving youth and seniors. The seniors teach the young people how to knit, with the goal of brightening up the city by attaching knitted objects to public sites. This is also an

Deemed long-term offender Robert FREEMAN Black Press
A 54-year-old Abbotsford man who stabbed a woman to death in the foyer of her Harrison Hot Springs home in 2007 fits the criteria of a dangerous offender, but was sentenced Thursday as a long-term offender instead. Sidney Andrew Robinson was sent to jail by a B.C. Supreme Court Justice for a total of 12 years – but will effectively serve only four years when double credit for time already served in custody is factored in – followed by 10 years of “close supervision” under the long-term offender designation. Robinson was found guilty of manslaughter on March 18 for the slaying of Holly McFadden, a 54-year-old teacher, on June 29, 2007. Robinson met McFadden at a New Year’s Eve party that year, just after he’d been released from the psychiatric ward of
the MSA Hospital in Abbotsford where he was treated for a mental breakdown. He was also under treatment for a brain injury suffered in a motorcycle accident in 2000. McFadden befriended the man, who one forensic psychologist at trial described as a “ticking time bomb” with poor impulse control due to the brain injury. He also had a string of convictions for violent crimes against women, including sex assault and robbery. On Thursday, Justice Brian Joyce said he was satisfied, based on expert testimony at trial and by reports of Robinson’s behavior while in custody over the past four years, that there is a “reasonable possibility” Robinson will respond to treatment programs in prison, and to others while under supervision, to gain the self-control needed to ensure the protection of the public.
Crown counsel had argued at earlier hearings that only dangerous offender status – which would have kept Robinson in custody for an “indeterminate” time – could guarantee protection of the public, in light of the brain damage. Joyce said Robinson’s “remorse” for killing McFadden, as well as his conduct in custody over the past four years, especially his consistent use of medication prescribed for depression, gave him “optimism” that Robinson would do well when

released into the community, under close supervision. “He cannot be cured for his traumatic brain injury,” Joyce said. But he added that Robinson will likely live in a halfway house during the 10-year supervision order, and there are treatment programs designed specially for brain-injured people. The justice also said that Robinson will be nearly 70 years old when the supervision order expires, and age is a factor in committing violent crimes.

The board said that without the extension of his time in a halfway house, White “would continue to pose an undue risk to the community. He was released from prison on Jan. 14, 2008, after serving his full five-year sentence for the sexual assault

Although the NPB expressed concerns about White living on his own, board members noted there have been no reports that he has sought access to children since his release. Saving little lives in Africa Ashley WRAY Abbotsford News
Caring for orphaned and sick babies in Africa has instilled a local woman’s belief in miracles. Amanda Rauh recently led a group of seven other women to the Baby Watoto facility in Uganda, Africa. For two weeks, the women helped with the daily care of the children, including feeding, bathing, changing, doing laundry, rocking the babies to sleep, and cuddling. The volunteers also worked with the Baby Watoto nannies, organizing games to build their confidence and promote bonding. Rauh, a team leader with Watoto Canada, said the activities were just like the ones you’d see at a bridal shower, from making toilet paper dresses to strutting down a cat walk. Each nanny cares for about five kids. The children – who often arrive malnourished and in serious medical condition – are brought to Watoto by hospitals, police, child protection units and good Samaritans. Care is provided to the babies up to the age of two. When they are older and physically well enough, they either graduate to a Watoto children’s village or are reunited with existing relatives. The children’s stories are heartbreaking, said Rauh. Many of the babies are found in outdoor toilets, thrown away in the garbage, left on church pews or on the side of the road. Rauh met two young brothers who had been abandoned by their father after their mother died of AIDS. Both HIV positive, the boys were found going door-to-door begging for food. Another story that stuck with Rauh was of an infant who had been buried alive and dug up by a pack of dogs. The baby was barely breathing when brought to Watoto, but is now in good health. “You believe in miracles when you come back from Africa,” said Rauh. “Until you see the world with your own
eyes, you never understand or have a grasp of how desperate some situations are.” Baby Watoto has three branches in Uganda. They are located in Kampala, Suubi and Gulu. A house is currently in the works for Cape Town, South Africa. Rauh has already started planning next year’s trip to exercise her gift as a professional cuddler. For more information on the program, check out www.watoto.com.

First Abbotsford high school athlete to win provincial boys 100m title Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
When Nakai Luyken joined the Yale Secondary track and field team this spring, he viewed it as simply a way to stay in shape for basketball – nothing more, nothing less. Imagine his surprise, then, to find himself standing on the top step of the podium at Burnaby’s Swangard Stadium on Saturday, as the B.C. high school 100metre sprint champion. “I didn’t expect it going in, but I’m pretty happy right now,” Luyken marveled. “I’m shocked I won. Halfway through the race, I was in fifth place.” Anyone who’s watched Luyken play basketball knows he’s got speed to burn – it’s a big part of the reason the UBC Thunderbirds signed him to a hoops scholarship in February. Yale track and field coach Trevor Wight figured Luyken’s explosiveness would translate pretty well to the track, and prevailed upon him to join the Lions. Luyken hadn’t participated in a full track season since Grade 6, but he began to buy into the notion that he could contend for a provincial medal after finishing third at the Fraser Valleys two weeks ago. So he borrowed a set of starting blocks from the school, and began putting in a bit of extra work on his own. On Saturday, Luyken came off the blocks, and when he looked up, there were “four or five guys” ahead of him. But he hit the after-burners and powered his way to the front just before the finish line. He clocked a time of 11.20 seconds, edging Nicholas Ayin of Gleneagle by nine hundredths of a second. Luyken, who played a key role on Yale’s B.C. AAA champion basketball team in 2010, is quick to note that the province’s top-seeded sprinter – Keefer Joyce of Kelowna – suffered an injury and was unable to race on Saturday. “I was really mad – I wanted to race

Home field advantage didn't translate into medals for Abbotsford's high school boys rugby teams, but there was plenty for the locals to be pleased about after the B.C. championships wrapped up at Exhibition Park on Saturday. The Rick Hansen Hurricanes came the closest to the podium, dropping a 28-17 decision to the Rockridge Ravens of West Vancouver in the AA bronze medal game. But Hurricanes head coach Bo Sidhu was in a celebratory mood, noting that fourth place represented the best provincial finish in the history of the Hansen boys rugby program. “The top three teams (in AA), they've been powerhouses for the past 15 years,” Sidhu said, referring to gold medallist Collingwood, runner-up Brentwood College, and Rockridge. “For us to be able to compete against those teams, it's been fantastic for Hansen rugby. We've made leaps and bounds with our program, and we're only going to move forward.” Rockridge opened a 19-5 lead at halftime of the bronze medal game, with Daniel McCutcheon accounting for Hansen's lone try. But the 'Canes didn't quit – tries from Arsh Gill and Justin Carey after the break kept the score close. Continued on A20

Yaleans match best finish From A19
In AAA action, the Yale Lions fell 41-24 to the St. George's Saints of Vancouver in the fifth-sixth placing game. Despite the loss, the Lions matched the best provincial finish in school history. The last time Yale finished sixth at the B.C.'s was back in 1988, when current head coach Doug Primrose was the team captain. “I was a little bit torn – I didn't want the guys to beat my record,” joked Primrose, whose team got a pair of tries from Brandon Jobb against St. George's. “But it's a great showing for us. “The boys played well all tournament. They should be proud.” After sustaining a disappointing defeat to St. Michael's University in the first round, the Robert Bateman Timberwolves knew they could finish no higher than ninth place in the AAA draw. They dug deep and

did just that, capping a three-game winning streak with a wild 52-42 win over G.P. Vanier of Courtenay in the ninth-10th placing game. Justin Douglas turned in a dominant performance for the T-Wolves, racking up four tries. “We were trading points like a basketball game,” marveled Bateman coach Dave Chambers. “And it's not as if the defence was terrible. It was good offensive play, and I wouldn't say any of the tries were soft.” IN BRIEF: Q The Shawnigan Lake Stags claimed the AAA title, trouncing Oak Bay of Victoria 43-0 in the final. The Collingwood Cavaliers of West Van were crowned AA champs, edging Brentwood College of Mill Bay 28-21. year, and I knew from the outset that if I could get this kid to see the bigger picture, he could do some great things.â€? To Canadian-ize a classic sports axiom, the triple jump could accurately be referred to as a game of centimetres. Aisha Klippenstein would be quick to vouch for that. The Abbotsford School of Intergrated Arts senior came close to a gold medal in the senior girls triple jump, but her best attempt of 11.52 metres fell 16 centimetres shy of winner Ayla Alehurst of Carihi. “It’s always a bit disappointing when it’s so close,â€? Klippenstein analyzed. That said, Klippenstein was pleased with her performances at provincials, which included a bronze medal in the 100m hurdles (14.89 seconds). Both performances were close to her personal bests, and she matched her doublemedal finish from the 2010 B.C.’s. Luyken’s sprint title was just the high point of a big day for Yale. The Lions’ 4x100m senior girls relay team – composed of Chantal Desch, Katryna Bampton, Keeley Thompson and Hailey Froehler – won bronze, registering their best time of the season
(50.92). “Their handoffs were complete silk, Wight enthused. “Chantal, on the anchor leg, was an absolute machine. In the Grade 8-9 portion of the meet, the W.J. Mouat Hawks registered a pair of gold medals. Their 4x100m
relay team finished in a dead heat with Vancouver College, and shared the top spot on the podium. Hailey Gibson won the Grade 9 girls 100m dash in a time of 12.95. Mouat coach Cameron Smith noted that the Grade 9 boys team’s effort
marked the first time a Hawks relay team had won a B.C. title. “It’s unexpected, he enthused. “We’ve had a lot of silvers, but never a gold. Mouat’s Alex Siemens narrowly missed the podium on two occasions, finishing fourth in
both the seniors girls 1500m and 3000m races. Her performances paced Mouat to a ninthplace finish in the senior girls aggre-
gate standings. Aly Cheese of Abbotsford Christian was the highest flyer in her age group, winning the Grade 9 girls
high jump after clearing 1.55m on her first attempt. MEI’s Paige Bergen finished third the Grade 9 girls 100m.

Sports in Brief RIVERMEN LAND O’ROURKE Former Abbotsford Heat assistant coach Steve O’Rourke has been hired as head coach of the Langley Rivermen. The recently renamed B.C. Hockey League franchise – formerly the Langley Chiefs – introduced O’Rourke at a press conference last Thursday at the Langley Events Centre. “The Abbotsford Heat, I love the level, I love where I was at, said O’Rourke, who has two children, age 12 and seven. “But ultimately, I had to give more time to my family. “My commitment here (with the Rivermen) will be at the same level, but in Abbotsford we travel a lot. Just that amount of time away from two kids and a growing family, it was a lot.
