A special postal delivery Christmas card without address still makes it to local man Melissa WELSH Abbotsford News
When Doug Ring opened his mailbox to find a festive green envelope, he saw his name and that of his wife written clearly on the front. But where the address usually follows, there were vague instructions on where the house may be. “One block off McCallum, north on Busby,” was all the postman had to go on. It was sent from a friend in Kamloops, Toby Eye. The two men worked together in the 1960s at the Sherritt Gordon mines in Manitoba. It had been more than 30 years since the old friends had seen each other, until this last summer when Eye came to visit
Ring at his Abbotsford home. “We were there for the first time, but I lost the address,” Eye explained from his home in Kamloops. “I thought I would just try something, and have my return address written if it didn’t get there.” This December was the first in years that Eye decided to send out Christmas cards, 14 in total. Ring’s was the only “goofy one,” he added. But last week it arrived, much to Ring’s surprise. He wanted to thank the postie who went the extra mile. “We called the post office, trying to track down the person who may have delivered it, but they couldn’t. I don’t know how they delivered it.”
This envelope was delivered, despite the vague instructions.

Robyn Lee reacts in surprise when she turns around and finds boyfriend Cameron Peterson proposing to her at the Santa display in Sevenoaks Shopping Centre on Dec. 2. Their daughter, Rebecca, is in the arms of Robyn’s sister Jodie.
Santa witness to surprise proposal Partner pops question at photo session Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Robyn Lee has been by Cameron Peterson’s side through some serious health traumas, including a broken neck in January 2009 and a car accident three months later. They have also been through many joys, including the birth of their daughter Rebecca in November 2009. Cameron, 27, found it only fitting that his girlfriend of four years should become his wife. They had been through so much together, and it was time for celebration.
He selected the ring – a .75 carat Canadian-mined diamond set in gold – but didn’t know exactly how he would propose. Then, he saw his moment. The couple had taken their daughter to visit Santa Claus in Sevenoaks Shopping Centre in Abbotsford on Dec. 2. They were accompanied by Robyn’s two sisters and her four-year-old niece. While they were there, Cameron received a call on his cellphone, informing him that the engagement ring was ready to be picked up. He made an excuse to slip away, and obtained the ring, which was concealed in a red box too big to fit in Cameron’s pocket. He hid it behind his back as he returned to his family, and mulled over what to do with the item. As they were standing in
line waiting for their turn to visit Santa, Cameron had a revelation: This would be the perfect time to propose. It was a unique memorable setting, and there was a photographer already there to capture the moment. He quickly whispered his intentions to Robyn’s sisters, who were thrilled at the idea. Their daughter provided the perfect distraction for Cameron to approach the photographer with his plans; the two-year-old was screaming as Robyn tried to place her on the lap of the strange, white-bearded man in the red velvet suit. Robyn thought Cameron had stepped away to discuss photo-package options. Her sister then retrieved Rebecca from Santa’s lap, just as Robyn turned around to see
Cameron on one knee with the ring held out in front of him. “Will you marry me?” he said. Robyn had never been so surprised. She had no inkling that Cameron had been planning to propose. “Are you kidding?” she laughed, before adding, “Of course!” Then, she started to cry and the multitude of holiday shoppers cheered as Cameron slid the ring onto Robyn’s finger. The two have not yet set a wedding date. They want to wait until Cameron finishes a two-year program to become a machine operator. For now, Robyn, a caregiver for people with developmental disabilities, is revelling in the engagement. “This is the most amazing month of my life!” she said.
Nearly 19,000 working poor and homeless people across the Lower Mainland received donations of blankets, clothing, and other necessities this year. Many of those donations stayed in Abbotsford – through the Salvation Army – as part of the Realtors Care Blanket Drive, which ran from Nov. 28 to Dec. 5 and is the longest running event of its kind in the region. Since 1994, the real estate community has partnered with local charities to distribute items collected, helping more than 185,000 people in that time. Individuals, corporations, retailers, community groups and schools all partner with local realtors to collect quality items. This year, for the first time, a video blog was created to tell the stories behind the Blanket Drive. Christmas Wrapping Paper is Not Recyclable
Abbotsford International Airport Fee Increases
When wrapping up presents, consider using re-useable gift bags, tins, or shopping bags as an alternative to wrapping paper. Christmas wrapping paper cannot be recycled, due to low quality paper and the number of contaminants. In Canada, the annual waste generated from gift wrapping and shopping bags equals about 545,000 tonnes. Blue bags containing wrapping paper will not be collected. An alternative idea is to make the wrapping a part of the gift by using a scarf, t-shirt, or blanket to wrap the present.

Public Notice Council Procedure Bylaw, 2011 Pursuant to Sections 94 and 124 of the Community Charter, Council may not amend, repeal or substitute a Council Procedure Bylaw unless Council Âżrst gives notice of its intent to do so. Council for the City of Abbotsford intends to repeal Council Procedure Bylaw No. 1318-2004, cited as “Council Procedure Bylaw, 2004â€?, and all amendments, and to replace it with Council Procedure Bylaw No. 2075-2011. Proposed changes in general terms include updating/modernizing wording and formatting; inclusion of the provision for presentations/awards at Council meetings; inclusion of the provision for the appointment of Acting Mayor; and inclusion of the provision for electronic meetings. Bylaw No. 2075-2011 received three readings at the December 19, 2011 Regular Council Meeting; with adoption scheduled to occur at the January 9, 2012 Regular Council Meeting. A copy of the bylaw is available on the City’s website at www.abbotsford.ca/mayorcouncil , or can be viewed at the City Clerk’s OfÂżce, located on the 5th Floor, City Hall, 32315 South Fraser Way, during regular ofÂżce hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, excluding statutory holidays.
Snow & Ice Control The goal of the City’s Snow and Ice Control Program is to maintain travel routes where there is snow and ice on roads and restore mobility for the traveling public. Our roads are classi¿ed: • ¿rst priority (high volume and strategic arterial and collector roads, and major access roads to hillside areas); • second priority (remaining arterial, hillside areas and collector routes); and • third priority (remaining roadways not identi¿ed as ¿rst and second priority). First priority roads are maintained until conditions are under control subject to worker/equipment availability and weather. Only then are resources redirected to second priority routes and subsequently third priority routes. The City of Abbotsford, which takes a pro-active approach to snow and ice control, operates four anti-icing units (tanks containing sodium chloride solution) on four-lane roads and rural priority roads. The units are used to spray road surfaces before and during a storm. Anti-icing helps keep roads ice free and improves snow removal. Several pre-wetting units, which inject liquid sodium chloride into the salt/sand mixture before it is applied to roads, are also used by the City. These units increase the melting of snow and ice, and reduce the loss of salt/sand caused by traf¿c.
Please be as concise as possible when Âżlling out your application; and attach a resume.
The City does not remove snow and ice to bare pavement conditions. The public is encouraged to use caution, and wherever possible, park vehicles off the streets. Abandoned vehicles or vehicles obstructing roadways will be towed without notice to allow for snow clearing operations to continue and towing costs will be the responsibility of the vehicle owners. We ask that you do not plow snow from private properties onto the public roadways as this can result in visibility hazards and obstructions and will require additional time for clearing roadways.
For a listing of various City Committees and their mandates, please visit www.abbotsford.ca, under Mayor and Council, Council Committees, or contact Bill Flitton at 604-864-5603 / bÀitton@abbotsford.ca.
The City will work 24 hour days until the snow ends and Âżrst priority routes are passable for travel. For more information, please contact the Engineering Operations Division at 604-853-5485.

Compost Your Christmas Tree Real Christmas trees are compostable. After the holiday season, remove the decorations for reuse next year and place your tree at the curb (according to curbside collection speciÂżcations) or drop them off at the Abbotsford Mission Recycling Depot (33670 Valley Road, Abbotsford).
Your Curbside Collection Calendar You will be receiving your 2012 curbside collection calendar by mid to late December. If you have not received your 2012 collection calendar by the end of December, please call 604-864-5514 and we will mail one to you, or view and print your calendar from www.abbotsford.ca/garbage. The 2012 collection handbook is also available online, or if you call 604-864-5514. Please also note that the City is planning to introduce food waste curbside collection in 2012 and will provide further information, including a new collection schedule, in mid-2012 once the details of the program are developed. Enjoy the holidays!
City Waste Collection during Extreme Winter Weather The City will make every attempt to collect curbside recycling, yard waste, and garbage during snow and ice conditions. However, the safety of workers, residents, and property always comes Âżrst. If there is any risk, we will not be collecting, and we ask that you set out your materials on your next collection day. The usual container limits will be doubled for areas that have missed a collection day. On some occasions the City, or its contractor, may provide additional collection as soon as possible after the missed collection day. For more information, please see www.abbotsford.ca/ engineering, or call 604-853-5485 regarding CITY pickup or 604-864-9177 regarding CONTRACTOR pickup.

QUESTION
Leaving FVRD
OF THE WEEK
Are you in favour of the city’s plan to leave the Fraser Valley Regional District?
Sounds like the old guard at the council table, those being all councillors, with the exception of Patricia Ross and newcomer Henry Braun, as well as Mayor Bruce Banman, still don’t get, or choose not to understand or comprehend the fate of former Mayor George Peary. The former mayor paid the ultimate price in November. Rob Ironside
To answer, go to abbynews.com
LAST WEEK, WE ASKED:
I thought that by being the mayor, you would follow the wishes of the electorate, the taxpayers that fund your wages, not the city council that clearly do not know what they are doing. A referendum should be held for the taxpayers of this city; ask us if we want to leave the FVRD. Cody Cruise
Will you spend more on Christmas gifts this year as opposed to last? YOU RESPONDED:
I hope there is some public consultation before city council goes ahead with this, seeing as the mayoralty vote fairly strongly indicated that this was not something that the people of Abbotsford wanted. Thea Levesque

My View There’s nothing like the honest , shoot-from-the-hip way little boys tell you how they feel about something. And if the little boys happen to be your grandsons, it’s even better. My husband Bill and I are heading into our fourth Christmas in Abbotsford. In August 2008, when most of our near-retirement friends were downsizing, we left our 1600 sq. ft. condo in Vancouver to move into a 3000 sq. ft. house on five acres of farmland in Abbotsford. (Talk about upsizing!) There were two key reasons we decided to forego city life to become urban farmers. And they both live down the street with our daughter and her husband. Our grandsons were 4 and 5 when we moved here and my “grandmother hormones” were going crazy. The only cure was daily hugs. Our first Christmas on the farm we
didn’t have a Christmas tree. We were renovating. Christmases two and three were another story. I was so excited to be living “out in the country” that I wanted everything we did to be old-fashioned traditional. And as for the Christmas tree, no artificial or parking-lot tree for us. We were going to select our own tree right from the source. In light of the fact that neither Bill nor I had ever cut down a tree in our lives, we opted to visit a beautiful Christmas tree lot slightly off the beaten path where families have the choice to cut their own trees or purchase lovely cultured ones that had been pruned to look “designertradition.” The day we chose was perfect: clear, sunny and cold with just a sprinkling of snow on the ground. We picked up the kids and made our way to Christmas wonderland. Carols and Santa songs were playing through all the tree lots; the aroma of hot chocolate and apple cider mingled with the scents of pine and cedar boughs; blowup Santas made great props for pictures, and
candy canes were available at every refreshment station. While Bill and I selected a beautiful tree, the boys ran around the property sampling all the hot chocolate and candy canes they could find. Then we all carried our Christmas tree to the van and headed home with strains of

Last year, we repeated our new tradition with slightly different results. The day was pouring rain and windy. The cold blew right through us as we clambered out of the van. Our hats and scarves were hard pressed to stay on, and our coats were soaked through in minutes. The boys ran straight for
the hot chocolate, and Bill and I made the fastest tree transaction we could manage. Is it green? Does it stand up? We’ll take it. Then we played the “senior” card so the young guys who worked there would carry the tree to our vehicle. A couple of weeks ago when I was at the Co-op buying food for the chickens (we’ve got this farm-thing down pat now) I saw very real looking artificial trees on sale for a terrific price. I wanted to get one but was worried what the kids would say. Nanny and Grampa had started the great tradition of the family outing to select a tree. What would they think if we wimped out? So I sat them down, explained we were thinking of getting an artificial tree, which would mean we wouldn’t be going out to the Christmas Tree lot this year and what did they think? Their quick response? “Can we still have hot chocolate?” My immediate reply “You bet!” And so a new Nanny and Grampa Christmas tradition was born. Deep gratitude for our health care system Re: Letter, “Hospital built too small.” Reading Elly Rhoades’ letter about her nine-day stay at the Abbotsford Hospital proved that the emergency staff at the hospital bent over backwards to supply her medical needs. Yes, Elly recieved the best of care, free of charge.
Although I fully sympathize with Rhoades’ obvious difficult health issues, I do question her statement, “When is health care going to be more important than profit?...why don’t politicians tighten their belts to take a pay cut?” I ask Elly, do you ever stop to wonder just how long the medical sys-
tem can afford to give us all hospital, medical and prescription benefits near free of charge? Across the line, I kid you not, a family of four, relatives of ours, must pay $800 each month to receive far less health care benefits than you and I receive on regular basis for next to nothing?
I cannot help but wonder how absolutely spoiled rotten Canadians have become, and still continue to demand more and more freebies all the time. When I stop to think just how much we ourselves have saved on medical care, hospital stay and prescription benefits, I hang my
Gun registry data breached
The federal Liberals and NDP are joining Quebec in demanding the salvage of gun registry data, yet history has shown this data to be outdated, unreliable and potentially dangerous to Canada’s gun owners. Registry supporters have been unable to definitively link this information to a decades-long decline in gun deaths nor have police bureaucrats

been able to cite any cases where the data was critical in preventing or solving a crime. Conversely, we have seen proof that this data could very well be used by organized crime. RCMP computers and the registry have been
breached and gang members have managed to obtain information through accomplices working within the government. This has been used to target rival gang members and a member of the Montreal press. Who knows how
And let’s not forget our government officials who see to it that all these benefits are paid for. Complain? How dare we! It is far more fitting to show our deep gratitude to the medical staff, our government, our police and fire officers who put their lives on the line to keep us all safe.
Yes, Elly, when you really stop to think about it all, there’s just no end to all the care given by all of the above for providing us with the services mostly free of charge. How our neighbours across the line would wish the same. I wish you a most blessed Christmas and a happy New Year. Gertie Pool

TERRY FOX KIDS SHOW THEIR HEART
COMMUNITY ACCESS GROUP CHIPPING IN Every Christmas, students from the Community Access Program at Yale secondary collect food donations for the Abbotsford Food Bank, while they collect bottles for their recycling business throughout the year. The group also raised $1,000, which was donated to the Food Bank, Youth Unlimited/Youth for Christ and the Cyrus Centre.
Terry Fox elementary school sponsored a food drive to help the Abbotsford Food Bank. The classes competed for a free class popcorn treat, provided by the PAC, for whichever class brought in the most food donations. Mrs. Chan’s Grade 4 class won, donating 108 items. The winner of the Operation No Free Ride draw at Dasmesh Punjabi School was 15-year-old Gagan Jawanda who says she hopes to be getting her learner’s driver’s licence in the spring. Presenting the prize pack was youth officer Cst. Robyn Lamarche.
Make it a very Merr y Christmas
As part of the ongoing effort to reduce auto theft, the Abbotsford Police held a draw in local high schools for a prize package that included a steering wheel lock and other items for “new” or “soon to be new” drivers. The goal of the campaign was to raise awareness with youth about the importance of safeguarding their vehicles. Abbotsford Police partnered with Canadian Tire, targeting customers to increase awareness and public safety around auto theft prevention. Operation No-Free
Ride involves actively promoting the use of anti-theft devices for all motorists. “The draw in schools helps us get the crime prevention message to our young people who aren’t necessarily thinking about how easily some of the cars they are driving can be stolen,” said crime preven tion Sgt. Casey Vinet. “Our hope is tha by instilling crime prevention principles at an early age is that those behaviours will carry over into adulthood. If tha happens, not only will they benefit, but we all do.”

READING BUDDIES Reading Buddies are needed for a program at Clearbrook Library. The program pairs high school students and adult volunteers with children in Grades 1 to 4 who need extra help with their reading. The volunteers spend an hour a week practising reading and playing literacy-based games with their little buddies. Students earn volunteer hours for graduation requirements. An orientation session is provided to all volunteers before being assigned a reading buddy. Application forms are available at the children’s library desk in Clearbrook Library (32320 George Ferguson Way).

May the
peace & happiness of the Christmas season be yours today
and everyday throughout the New Year.
The grandeur of the solution
Christmas is a bizarre holiday. That hasn’t changed the fact that it stands out as my favourite during the entire year. Thanksgiving is great, and the fireworks on Canada Day are pretty spectacular, but there’s nothing that really compares to Christmas. Presents, lights, trees in our homes (a tradition I still struggle to understand), and a smile on most faces. The world always seems a bit happier during December. People seem a bit

Column kinder. No wonder they call it the most wonderful time of the year. But, all of this doesn’t change how bizarre Christmas is. I know it’s popular today to remove most of the historical and religious significance from our public holidays, but Christmas really can’t be under-
stood without these. The Bible describes Christmas as the day when, “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” It was the day when God sent His Son to become a baby, born to an insignificant woman, witnessed to by insignificant shepherds living in an insignificant land. The almighty, transcendent, inapproachably brilliant, and holy God became

a baby who was laid in a feed trough next to horse manure. Bizarre. Of course, it is more than bizarre. It is puzzling. Why would God go that kind of distance? You can usually tell how difficult a problem is by the grandeur of the solution (at least that’s the only thing I remember from calculus class). So, how great must the problem be if the solution required God to lower himself to the point where he slept his first night on earth amidst the aroma of sheep? The answer is found in the songs that we can’t wait to sing every year… “Mild He lays His glory by Born that man no more may die Born to raise the sons of earth Born to give them second birth Hark the herald angels sing Glory to the newborn king.” The magnificent God took on human flesh in order that through his perfect life he might become a sacrifice to God on our behalf. He lived the life we should have lived, and he died the death we deserved to die, suffering the punishment for sins that were not his own. The king of the universe has, at infinite cost to himself, granted us a way to be saved from the just consequences of our rebellion. All that is left to do is receive the amnesty he offers. Bizarre indeed. But it is the way we see the brilliance of the newborn King. Jeff Bucknam is the lead pastor at Northview Community Church.
May your holiday season be celebrated in the company of family and friends
Wishing you a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year!

The Rotary Foundation is a not-for-profit organization supported solely by voluntary contributions. Its mission is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. Some of the programs the Rotary Foundation supports include PolioPlus, Rotary Peace Fellowships, Ambassadorial Scholarships, Rotary Grants for University Teachers and Group Study Exchange around the world. Since 1985, the Rotary Foundation has provided leadership in a humanitarian project called PolioPlus now recognized worldwide as a model of public-private cooperation. The challenge of this partnership is the global eradication of polio. Through the efforts of Rotarians and their partners, two billion children have been immunized with the polio vaccine. To-date, 210 countries, territories, and areas around the world are polio-free, and 134 of these have been certified polio-free. Rotary has committed more than $900 million to global polio eradication. The remaining challenges include rapidly immunizing every child in the remaining countries; obtaining the funds required to complete the mission; maintaining high quality surveillance; and quickly responding to outbreaks.

Avoid unnecessary holiday visits to emerg Hospital emergency departments are busy places, and during the winter months, visits to local hospitals can increase dramatically. Fraser Health is asking residents to help by taking simple steps to avoid unnecessary trips to your local emergency department during the busy holiday season. “We know that emergencies and other serious health concerns happen every day, but some of the influx of patients during the holidays is related to people needing a prescription refill or a family physicians check-up when their doctor’s office is closed for the holidays, said Dr.
Craig Murray, medical director for Surrey Memorial Hospital’s emergency department. Emergency department admits are triaged by level of seriousness of the symptoms. If you need to visit an emergency department, coming prepared can make your visit shorter. Keep a list of all medications that you take and known allergies with you at all times. Other steps you can take to avoid an unnecessary trip to an emergency department: Q If you are unsure about what health services you require or where to access
them, call 8-1-1. The toll-free HealthLink BC line provides 24/7 confidential health information in over 130 languages including Punjabi, Cantonese and Mandarin. Q Check your symptoms or get more information about a condition online at HealthLink BC www.healthlinkbc.ca or you can order a book format for easy reference at home. Q Take note of the weekend/holiday hours of your local pharmacy/drug store, and ensure your prescriptions are up to date. Q Familiarize yourself with the locations and hours of walk-in clinics in your

Abbotsford’s Ken Ikeda is aiming to help Canada’s men’s gymnastics team qualify for the 2012 London Olympics. He and his teammates must finish in the top four out of eight nations during a second-stage trial meet on Jan. 10.

The four-year gap between Summer Olympics is often referred to as a cycle, and from Ken Ikeda’s perspective, it feels like that cycle is being pedaled by Lance Armstrong. The Abbotsford gymnast says it seems like just yesterday that he was in Beijing, serving as the first alternate with the Canadian men’s gymnastics squad at the ‘08 Summer Games. As it stands, he’s just weeks away from the culmination of another drive to qualify a full team for the

Clay Wilson continued his strong play in the month of December, scoring 52 seconds into overtime to lift the Abbotsford Heat to a 4-3 road win over the Grand Rapids Griffins on Wednesday evening. Carrying the puck on a two-on-one break with Krys Kolanos, Wilson elected to keep, and beat Grand Rapids goalie Joey MacDonald with a wrist shot. The OT tally, plus a first-period fight against the Griffins’ Tomas Tatar and an assist on Quintin Laing’s third-period goal, represented a Gordie Howe h a t trick for the veteran blueliner. T h e H e a t WILSON a r e 7-0-1 in the month of December, and Wilson has been a huge part of that success, tallying seven points (two goals, five assists) during that span. Wednesday’s win gave the Heat (20-8-2-0, 42 points) sole possession of second place in both the AHL’s West Division and overall standings. They’re two points back of the first-place Oklahoma City Barons. Wilson wasn’t the only member of the Heat to put up big numbers on Wednesday. Krys Kolanos posted two goals and an assist to go with a gamehigh seven shots and a +4 rating. He’s dominated the Griffins this season – in his Heat debut on Oct. 28, he notched a hat trick and an assist. Kolanos’s linemate Ben Walter picked up two assists, while goalie Danny Taylor had to be sharp en route to his sixth win in seven starts with the Heat. Grand Rapids out-shot Abbotsford 46-30, but Taylor came through with 43 saves. Q The Heat wrapped up their pre-Christmas schedule with a road date Thursday against the Chicago Wolves, but that result not available at press time. Visit abbynews. com for updates.

Bruins trio passing chemistry Longtime linemates lighting up major midget league

Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
Jake Virtanen, Mitch Skapski and Matt Revel have been lighting up the B.C. Major Midget League this season, and theirs is hardly an overnight success story. The trio’s chemistry has been forged over the past six years, dating back to when they were linemates on a spring league team at the atom level. Their high-scoring partnership has endured through peewee, bantam and now midget hockey with the Fraser Valley Bruins. All three currently find themselves among the top 12 scorers in the BCMML, the province’s elite prep circuit for top prospects. Virtanen is ninth overall with 14 goals and 19 assists for 33 points in 24 games, with Skapski (18g, 13a, 31pts) and Revel (16g, 14a, 30pts) close behind. The trio was recently named to the BCMML all-star game, along with Bruins defenceman Austin Edwards. The VirtanenSkapski-Revel triumvirate doesn’t just spend a lot of time together on the ice – they all attend Yale Secondary, where they’re mem-

And Virtanen, on the right wing, is a phenom whose skating and shooting abilities – according to Campbell – are almost NHLcalibre already. second-stage qualifier on Jan. 10 in London. Canada will be joined by France, Great Britain, Spain, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Italy and Belarus at that meet, and the top four nations will move on to the Olympics. Given that the Canadian men finished 12th at Worlds, it would seem they’re right on the bubble for an Olympic berth. But
Ikeda is confident in his team’s ability to come through in the clutch. “Out of those eight teams, we’re all pretty close,” he acknowledged. “Basically, anything can happen. “But as long as we go through our routines the way we know we can do them, we’ll be fine.” The London Games would represent Ikeda’s third Olympics – he

couldn’t leave the team in the lurch. At age 29, Ikeda is the elder statesman of the Canadian squad, but he’s still a pivotal contributor – he was Canada’s top finisher on the p-bars (22nd) and the pommel (24th) at the 2011 Worlds. Should Canada qualify for the Olympics, Ikeda believes he’s got a shot at making an individual final in one or both of his two favourite events. During the Olympic qualifica-
tion drive, he’s scaled back the degree of difficulty in his routines in order to help the team – sacrificing higher start values in favour of more consistent scoring. Once the trial meet is over, the plan would be to boost his start values. “Once I do that, I should be able to compete with the top guys in the world,” he said. “It’s definitely doable, because I have a lot of skills I can put into those routines.”

competed in Athens in ‘04, before serving as an alternate in ‘08. After the Beijing Games, Ikeda was pretty sure that his gymnastics career wouldn’t extend past 2010, but that retirement timetable soon went out the window. Longtime stalwarts Kyle Shewfelt, David Kikuchi, Grant Golding and Adam Wong retired after Beijing, and Ikeda – who specializes in the pommel horse and parallel bar events – felt he
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
From A35
Those who are looking for rewarding volunteer work are encouraged to apply as a mediator and/or mentor with Abbotsford Restorative Justice & Advocacy Association. Restorative Justice aims to resolve crime outside of the traditional court system through encouraging first-time offenders to take responsibility for their actions and to make amends directly to those they have harmed—most often through a face-to-face mediated process. This program also allows for those who have been negatively affected to have direct input into how the harm will be repaired, and what amends are needed to make things right. Giving a voice through this non-adversarial process to those who have been directly affected allows for healing and closure to occur.
– Virtanen went first overall to the Calgary Hitmen, becoming the first Abbotsford player to earn that lofty distinction, while Skapski was tabbed in the fourth round to the Portland Winterhawks. Revel went undrafted – a turn of events which Campbell attributes to the fact that he’s also an outstanding baseball prospect. He plays shortstop and third base with the Abbotsford Junior Cardinals. Hockey options have material-
ized for Revel this fall, though. In early September, he was listed by the WHL’s Saskatoon Blades, and he was picked second overall in the BCHL (junior A) affiliate draft by the Chilliwack Chiefs. At this point, Revel isn’t sure whether he’ll go with hockey or baseball long-term, or whether he’d prefer the major junior or the junior A hockey route. “I love playing baseball, and I love playing hockey,” he said. “I’m not quite sure right now what’s going on yet.”

Charlie will also be deeply missed by his very special friends and neighbours, Rick and Heather. All are welcome to remember Charlie at a Memorial Tea to be held on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Henderson’s Funeral Home, 45901 Victoria Ave. Chilliwack, Please visit www.hendersonsfunerals.com to leave a message of condolence for the family. Hendersons Funeral Homes & Crematorium Ltd 45901 Victoria Ave, Chilliwack, BC 604-792-1344
Jakob Jake passed away peacefully in the early hours of December 20th with his wife by his side. He was predeceased by his eldest daughter, Edith. He will be deeply missed by his family. He is survived by his wife Ursula, children; Judy (Joseph), Krista (David), and David (Karen), grandchildren; Maria (Jonathan), Joshua (Amanda), Michael, Mark (Sheri), Kevin, Scott, Andrew, Jessica, & Zachary, greatgrandchildren, Jakob, Jack, & Joseph, and his sister, Elly (Walter). Jake was born in Halbstadt, Ukraine, and spent much of his childhood helping his mother and sister survive during WWII. His family came to Canada in 1948, where they lived and worked on a farm in McCreary, Manitoba. In 1950, he moved to Yarrow, BC, where he soon met and courted Ursula. They were married on Sept. 6, 1953. Jake worked in a variety of occupations when he was younger; as a house mover, truck driver, and electrician among other jobs. However, due to the high cost of having children, Dad focused his attention on becoming a master plumber, and plied his trade for over 40 years. Jake was a hard worker and often relaxed after work by doing more work and projects around the house. He often found time to help others with home repairs when they weren’t able to complete the work themselves. When Jake did lay his tools down, he loved nothing more than to pick up his fishing rod and find a quiet lake to catch some fish. He shared his love of fishing with his children and many of his grandchildren. The family has many fond memories of fishing with Dad, or “Opi” as the grandchildren knew him. Jake was deeply committed to providing for and taking care of his family as early as age 10, when his father was suddenly taken from the family. This commitment to family will be a lasting legacy lived out through his children. Special thanks to the staff of the Tertiary Palliative Care Unit at Abbotsford Regional Hospital for their kindness and care given to Jake and his family during his brief stay there. A graveside service will be held on December 24th at 9:30 am at the Maclure Road Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am remembering and celebrating Jake’s life at Eben-Ezer Mennonite Church. Online condolences to the family may be made to: www.wiebeandjeskefh.com Wiebe & Jeske 604.859.5885

Area Manager DIGNITY FUNERAL HOMES
Working with death allows me to appreciate life. Have you ever thought that life is short? Are you living life as if today was your last day? What would you do or change if this was your last day? We would probably do the things that matter most to us. There are four questions that I have learned that tend to govern my life. These questions have transformed my life and have helped me to put life into perspective. The first question is “What is it that I want?” Many of us have dreams and we have a bucket list of the things that we want to do before we die. People can be directionless and find it difficult to answer this question. People on their dying bed were asked, “What
would you do all over again, if you had your life to live again?” Many responded by saying that they would have taken more risk. My hope is that people will live their life to the fullest and that they would do the things that matter most to them. Why wait? There may not be another day. It is not the material things that we possess that matter most. It is making a difference in the lives of people that matters. People matter most. Let us value each other, encourage each other, and love each other. People will not remember us for the things that we have but they will remember us for the things that we have done for them. Therefore, I ask, “What is it that you want?”
