Judging from the volume of the cheers from the audience, Green Party candidate Daniel Bryce was the winner of Monday night’s federal election debate. Some would argue the youthful Bryce, 29, had an edge, facing a crowd of mostly students that filled the auditorium at UFV for the event, because he graduated from the university in 2005. Even incumbent Ed Fast (Conservative) gave Bryce props, saying “he’s got a great future in politics.” And by the end of the evening’s debating, Fast said he has been impressed by the quality of candidates running against him from the Liberal (Madeleine Hardin) and NDP (David Murray) parties as well. David MacKay of the Marxist-Leninist Party was absent, and Chilliwack-Hope MLP candidate Dorothy-Jean O’Donnell took his place in the debate. Fast’s party was the target of most of the criticism from the other four candidates. Moderator Hamish Telford of the UFV political science department took audience questions, and each of the candidates had their HARDIN FAST moments. On education policy, Murray said student loans should be offered without interest. “I can’t believe this government would have the audacity to charge you, and make money on you,” he said. Addressing mandatory voting laws, O’Donnell said firstpast-the-post elections “systematically disengage people.” She said the country instead needs “democratic renewal.” Commenting on the need for a majority government for effective governance, Hardin noted that Lester Pearson was prime minister of a minority government that introduced universal health care and the Canada Pension Plan. Sir Winston Churchill led a British minority government through the Second World War. “Coalition governments can work, if the leader allows it.” Fast responded that neither of those leaders faced an opposition coalition that included the Bloc Quebecois, a party dedicated to breaking up the country. He noted the BQ told Harper it would only support the federal budget if it

included a $5-billion payment for Quebec. On the issue of Abbotsford’s proposed P3 water system, Murray noted that Abbotsford can get $70 million in federal funding, “But only if we do it his (Stephen Harper’s) way. He’s bribing us with our own money.” Speaking on health care, Hardin said: “The Liberals are fully committed to the health care act. We need health care, not F35 bombers. It’s time to put our priorities right.” Fast said it was a Liberal government that slashed health care funding by 25 per cent. “They dumped it on the provinces and the local health authorities.” He noted the Conservative government is increasing transfer payments to the provinces by six per cent per year over five years. Bryce said the government strategy on health care should be not to offer more money, but to reduce costs. On the question of legalizing marijuana, Bryce said his Green party favours decriminalization, which would free up police resources and corrections spaces. He said it would also be a blow to organized crime. Liberal Hardin noted that the status quo is “working just fine,” and criticized the Conservative bill S-10, which BRYCE MURRAY would bring a six-month minimum jail sentence for growing six or more pot plants. Fast countered that “organized crime always finds a way to make a profit. “This is about mandatory minimum sentences for growops, which are a scourge on our community,” he said. Murray called the HST the “Harper Sales Tax,” and the NDP candidate noted that it is the number one issue he hears from Abbotsford residents when he campaigns doorto-door. On Conservative financial management, Hardin noted Brian Mulroney and Stephen Harper have had the biggest deficit budgets in Canadian history, while the Liberal government created surpluses. The candidates will meet for a second debate at the Chamber of Commerce all-candidates meeting on Thursday, April 28, 7 p.m. in the Azalea Room in Garden Park Tower at 2825 Clearbrook Rd.

Council votes to apply for water project funding Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News

Abbotsford has submitted its business case to PPP Canada for federal funding for a proposed public/private partnership (P3) to create a new water supply and treatment plant at Stave Lake in Mission. The submission was sent after council voted 7-2 Monday in favour of proceeding, with Couns. Patricia Ross and Lynne Harris voting against. The city hopes to have a funding decision by the end of June. Ross was the most

outspoken critic of the plan, saying the city had a “gentleman’s agreement” with Mission. “In order for us to move forward, we both had to agree,” said Ross, adding that Mission’s decision to abandon the P3 idea should have killed Abbotsford’s initiative. Ross called Mission “neighbours” and “friends” and said the move to go it alone felt “like a hostile takeover.” The anti-P3 crowd in attendance gave her a standing ovation and one person shouted,

“Ross for mayor.” Harris said she had a lot of “mixed emotions” regarding the project, and a “feeling of loss of control” in allowing a private company to run a treatment plant. Most of the remaining councillors said they need more information, and had reservations regarding P3s, but saw no reason to delay applying for funding. Coun. John Smith said he “takes comfort in the fact” this isn’t a final commitment, and the city could easily change its mind. “In the final analy-

sis, the people will have the final say,” said Smith, referring to the November referendum which would be needed for a P3 to be approved. Smith said he prefers the idea of a design-build agreement, rather than allowing the private investor to fund and operate the plant as well. However, designbuild does not qualify for PPP Canada funding. “We have to have senior government support,” he said, adding he resents the tactics of the federal

Police put dent in auto thefts Vikki HOPES

Abbotsford News

Police have put a big dent in the number of vehicles being stolen in Abbotsford. Const. Ian MacDonald said 12 people, including three young offenders, were arrested and charged after a rash of auto thefts in January and February. At the peak, an average of 17 to 20 vehicles were being stolen each week, compared to the current average of four. “The department’s goal is to have less than one theft of auto a day. We were clearly

not meeting that objective, which is what generated the need for us to do this project,” MacDonald said. The crime reduction unit worked with the crime analysis unit to break down the issue. Several offenders were identified, eight of them prolific, who were known for stealing vehicles. Some had recently been released from prison or had moved to the community. Surveillance teams, undercover officers, bait cars and other tactics were used. MacDonald said the vehicles most often targeted by the

the Wild Orange spa

thieves were Honda Civics and Accords, as well as Ford and Nissan pick-up trucks. Those arrested were either stopped in stolen cars or were in the process of trying to steal one. MacDonald said one offender, 36-year-old James Paul Wood, has 103 criminal convictions on his record. Another, Travis Gardner Baxter, has 17 convictions, and is only 21 years old. Of the 12 charged, the two were among the top-five most prolific offenders, along with Jeffrey Brian Aubie, 34; James Stephen Ekman, 36; and Edward Leo Forcier, 37.

Peary: I don’t think Mission will be offended From A5

government forcing municipalities “to do it their way.” After the meeting Abbotsford Mayor George Peary said he didn’t agree with Ross. “I don’t think Mission will be offended by what has been done,” said Peary. He said he has approached James Atebe, but the Mission mayor wanted to wait until Abbotsford voted before discussing the next step for the two cities. “Now we can have a dialogue,” said Peary, who added if Abbotsford con-

tinues on the P3 path alone, Mission would be able to acquire water without putting up any capital. But Peary also stressed the final decision lies with the voters. “I expect this will be a major election issue,” he said. Council’s decision does not mean the city will enter into a P3 agreement, but it allows it to explore the option, determine if the plan will be accepted by PPP Canada and discover how much funding (up to $66.5 million) could be provided. Abbotsford staff had to revise the original proposal after the District of

Mission voted against the P3 option. Instead of a joint $300-million project, Abbotsford has decided to act on its own on a smaller proposal ($280 million according to the city’s latest cost estimates). The new plan still includes a pump station and treatment plant at Stave Lake, but no longer includes an expansion to the MacLure reservoir or treatment of water from Cannel Lake. Part of the price tag includes work on the watermain on Gladwin Road. Work begins this year and will be paid for ($20 million) by the city.

A P3 education With the City of Abbotsford’s business case for a water project funding application now in the hands of PPP Canada, it is time for learning. A decision on federal government funding is not expected until the end of June. Those with a vested interest (virtually all residents) in the proposal to create a public/private partnership for a new Stave Lake water supply and treatment plant, should educate themselves on both sides of the debate. It’s not an easy undertaking, as there isn’t a host of operating Canadian projects like this one to which direct comparisons can be made. Opponents point to American examples of water privatization, but much of the evidence offered up involves cities that have sold or leased civic systems to private corporations. In Abbotsford’s case, the city maintains it would retain ownership of the water and treatment plant in a

P3 agreement, with fees and service controlled by a 25-year contract. Nevertheless, there are many questions to be objectively addressed. Does the potential $66 million in federal funding justify paying a private company for services which the city’s own study indicates could be performed publicly at a lower cost? Is a P3 project vulnerable to the private sector looking to cut corners in order to maximize profits? Will a P3 agreement relieve both a measure of financial burden and all but eliminate risks to the city? Does the nature of a P3, which involves a level of third party confidentiality, allow enough transparency for adequate public accountability? Whether for or against, all should eventually have one thing in common – and that’s being as well-informed as possible, because ultimately it will be taxpayers who will decide via referendum this fall if a P3 project proceeds.

B.C. Views My weekend in the big city didn’t lack for variety. It started with Stephen Harper’s defence of business tax cuts, and ended with the election of Adrian Dix as B.C. NDP leader on a Marxism Lite program of reversing this world-wide trend and making the corporations pay. I caught up with Harper on a tour through swing ridings in Vancouver, including Vancouver South where now-Liberal Ujjal Dosanjh hung on by 20 votes in the last of our semi-annual federal elections. Harper hit B.C. pleading for a majority to stop this merry-go-round of elections and stabilize the country as a player on the global business scene. I was granted a 10-minute interview, and one of my questions was about the multi-year program of business tax cuts being completed by both the federal and B.C. governments.

I asked Harper if B.C.’s unemployment and investment performance suggests not all of the savings are being reinvested. That’s because taxes are only one factor, our economist prime minister replied. Business confidence has to be there, and that’s why stable, multi-year programs are needed for business plans. Ottawa has implemented its four-year reduction plan, and Harper noted that B.C. isn’t alone in following suit. Most provinces have cut business taxes, including Liberal and NDP provincial governments, and now their federal counterparts campaign on promises to roll them back. “And nobody’s doing it,” Harper said. “This is what’s ironic. You look around the world. Ireland’s bankrupt, and it’s not raising its business tax rates. The United States has a deficit three times ours, and President Obama, who’s not on my side of the political spectrum, says they need to lower their tax rates.” But let’s not let federal or provincial politicians blow smoke that it’s their policies alone that have created 500,000 jobs across the country in two years, or made Canada’s currency soar past the U.S. dollar. Canada’s dollar is now seen

as a stable petro-currency in an unstable world, and it’s international lumber markets that have led to double-digit unemployment in many B.C. towns. Natural gas, and foreign technology and investment in it, have been a key part of B.C.’s recovery. And in general

Dix’s rhetoric about state-imposed wealth redistribution seems not so much alarming as quaint. we’re starting to enjoy the effects of a commodity boom. Then came the NDP leadership vote on Sunday. Here is a party that already has tilted itself toward the urban areas with a one member-one vote system. And it just rejected Mike Farnworth, its most popular candidate and the one with the best effort to emphasize rural and resource development. Newly anointed NDP leader Adrian

Dix is going to raise taxes on banks and those evil corporations, and use the money to subsidize post-secondary education for anyone who wants it. Meanwhile, the reality for post-secondary students is that business programs are tough to get into, because students are lining up to pay the supposedly onerous tuition fees. Dix’s rhetoric about state-imposed wealth redistribution seems not so much alarming as quaint. It’s his federal counterpart Jack Layton who blithely promises to double a federal pension program, just as Canada’s population approaches the tipping point in 2015, where there will be more seniors than children for the first time in our history. Where Dix is alarming is when he talks about offering a positive alternative to the B.C. Liberals on the economy, the environment and education. His convention win was presided over by a senior official of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation. The NDP’s environment policy is in disarray. And on the economy, he is diametrically opposed to the global consensus.

STRONG LEADERSHIP THAT’S ON YOUR SIDE

Abbotsford has much to be proud of. We have a new university, a new hospital, a beautiful civic area, a growing airport, a diversified economy, top-notch sports facilities, and an extensive system of trails and parks. Even more importantly, this city is filled with passionate people who care about their community. Indeed, if we were to count our blessings, many of us would say we are doing fine. On planet Earth, however, no one is immune from the effects of climate change, war and natural disaster. As recent events in Japan illustrate, we are all connected – lax nuclear plant regulations can affect health in North America. Two recent local examples illustrate the very real challenges, and the complex issues facing present and future leaders of our own community. In January, council approved a 62-unit development in the north-east corner of our city. They approved this development, in a highly stressed watershed, rather than wait for the recommendations of a major integrated storm

water management plan. On April 18, council approved the forwarding of an application for P3 development of the Stave Lake watershed. They forwarded this application, rather than waiting to identify the savings from the installation of our new water meters, and other conservation measures. By taking these actions, the mayor and council have demonstrated in essence that business will continue as usual. As a conservationist, I view these decisions as missed opportunities to demonstrate wise leadership. Although I have the utmost respect for the present mayor and council, I believe these decisions potentially compromise our quality of life. My hope on this Earth Day 2011 is that citizens who truly understand the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century do step forward and are chosen to lead this community. If a new team with a new vision could expand on the exceptional built assets of this community – then the potential for a truly great city would be very, very promising. Bill Walsh

wenty years of theatre will be celebrated with a fundraising gala next weekend. Gallery 7 Theatre Group is holding its third annual Imaginate Gala. The event will raise money for the organization, helping them to continually offer quality productions and drama related education in the future. As Abbotsford’s only full-time theatre company, Gallery 7 hopes to build on its history for the next 20 years. “We want to continue to grow with this community, to be an integral part of it, providing Abbotsford with an excellent theatre experience,” says Ken Hildebrandt, Gallery 7’s founder and executive artistic director. The gala will give guests the chance to view the current theatre with back stage tours. There will also be a comedic one-act play called 20 years in 20 minutes, written by Shelley Picard.

gallery7theatre.com

Abbotsford’s own Cinnamon Toast Funk will be providing the musical entertainment. The evening will also include roving actors who will interact with people as they arrive and those involved with the theatre will share how their experience has impacted them. Dinner will be prepared by awardwinning chef Michael Dicks of Q Steakhouse. A silent auction will be held, giving guests a chance to bid on items such as a two-night hotel stay and a wine tour. “While our dream for the future is to be in our own building, we know that Gallery 7 is already making an impact on lives now and we want to continue to build on that” says Denise Ramsay, chair of the Gallery 7 Theatre board. “We know that theatre is much more than just a building – we want to be the hub of theatre experience in

Abbotsford, to continue to make a positive contribution to this community.” Hildebrandt agrees. “Our hope is that our guests will be inspired by what they hear and see at the gala, just as they are inspired by what they see when they come to a production,” Hildebrandt says. “And out of that inspiration, they’ll be moved to help us continue to provide excellent theatre in our community and move towards realizing our dream.” The gala takes place on Saturday, April 30 at 6 p.m. at MEI Secondary School, 4081 Clearbrook Rd. Tickets are $75 each (includes a $25 donation) or $600 for a table of 8 (includes a $200 donation). Tickets are available online at www. gallery7theatre.com or at the theatre. CURRIE, Janet M. (née Burns) Kamloops, British Columbia On April 16, 2011 (peacefully) at Pinegrove Care Facility, at the age of 85. Janet, loving mother of Jenny, Gloria, Betty, Julia and Sylvia; will be sadly missed by her family, sister Helen, four grandchildren, two great grandchildren, sons-inlaws, nephews, relatives and friends. She was born in Beaverton, Ontario, on January 6, 1926. Predeceased by her husband, Dr. Edmond V. Currie, her sister, Margaret Burns, and her parents, Elsie (Merchison) Burns and William H. Burns. Janet loved to entertain, spent many hours creating beautiful quilts, and traveled the world. Throughout her busy life raising a large family and working as a nurse, she always found time to volunteer to help others. Many organizations looked to her for leadership, from ‘Widows Helping Others’ to coordinating quilts for teenage mothers and cancer patients. Having spent five years living in West Africa with her husband, she took great pride in showing her family and friends her ability to speak French. She had a great sense of humour. Anyone who met her always remarked on her welcoming smile, infectious laugh, and optimistic outlook on life. So, as Janet would say, it’s not goodbye, it’s ‘a la prochaine’! At her request, there will be no memorial service. The family would like to thank the staff at the Pinegrove Care Facility for the outstanding level of care she received during her final years. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pine Grove Lodge Residents’ Society and will be directed to the Music Therapy program, 313 McGowan Ave, Kamloops BC, V2B 2N8. Arrangements are entrusted to Clark’s Funeral Services 177 Tranquille Rd., Kamloops 250-554-2429

Marion Olive Doris passed away peacefully at home on April 17, 2011, to spend eternity with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with her family by her side. Marion, the youngest of a family of seven was born in Cadilac, Saskatchewan to Howard & Lillie (McKenzie) Snowdon. It was here she met and later married David Duerksen in 1967. Their daughter Michelle was born in 1974. Marion was on the hopital board, started home care support, and taught the care-aide course in Killarney and many surrounding towns in southern Manitoba. In 1989 Marion, David and Michelle moved to Abbotsford, BC. Marion was soon sought out to work at Val Haven Care Home. From 1992 to 1998 she taught the care aide course at which is now UFV in Abbotsford and Chilliwack. She also spent time as a head nurse in Menno Home. While driving home after work on November 28, 1999, she was rear-ended in a car accident which left her with a brain injury. In 2005 she had a stroke which did much damage. She was slowly detoriorating and moved into a Care Home for a time, when her condition continued to decline. Her husband brought her home in 2009 and took care of her until her passing at home. Anamaria, 27, is a corrections officer; Titus, 21, is studying criminology at UFV; Dina, 25, is a nurse, and 13-yearold Luisa is attending middle school. After 10 years in Canada, the family is now working on selling their home in Romania. “We had never thought to consider Canada our home, but Abbotsford has become a home for my parents and for all of us. We’re a lot happier.”

Abbotsford News

Inspiration has been discovered in three months of workouts and diet tips

Formerly Medwest Medical Centre

S

ince starting the Abbotsford News’ Healthy Living Challenge in January, the deWaal family has noticed some positive changes. They’ve become more accountable when it comes to eating, learned how to prepare meals with more nutritional value, and have dedicated themselves to a workout routine. Tony, his wife Judy, and his daughters, 13-year-old Amanda and 12-year-old Esther, all took part. While they weren’t going for a complete overhaul in the health department, as they were already fairly active and were healthy eaters, they knew they

wanted to make some positive changes. According to Tony, one of the main reasons for joining the challenge was to get back on track with the support of his family. The family quickly became accountable to each other when it came to eating. After completing a nutrition tour at Save-On-Foods, they learned what to look for in foods, such as certain fats and sugar levels. Preparing their own balanced meals was another lesson, along with planning dinners in advance. During the challenge, Tony found a dedication to working out. While he had been visiting the gym

before the challenge, he has now committed himself to three workouts a week. Thanks to their weekly visits to Innovative Fitness and the ARC, the kids also got involved at the gym. Following his final assessment last week, Tony has dropped six per cent body fat and nine pounds of weight. His physical condition has also improved. The whole experience has been a wake-up call, says Tony. “It’s helped me meet my goals, so that when I’m a grandfather, I can keep doing these activities with my grandkids. My daughters were supporting me and investing in their own futures.”

More than a mascot Hawkey gets the crowds riled up and encourages positive change in Abbotsford

D

rumming up the crowds, entertaining the fans and generally getting people pumped up on game night is an important job. And Hawkey is the perfect candidate to fill that role, which is why he’s the mascot for the Abbotsford Heat. As a red-tailed hawk that has lived in the Fraser Valley his whole life, Hawkey jumped at the chance to fulfil the role when the AHL team came to town two years ago. At six feet tall and 200 pounds, the territorial bird aims at keeping the competition at bay. His most important task on game night is entertaining and exciting the fans. Getting them into a cheering frenzy creates the electric atmosphere and energy in the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre, he says. He often uses his drum to get the fans clapping. He can also be seen starting the wave in the stands, and if there’s a theme night, he’ll wear a special costume. Helping out the promo team with contests is another duty for Hawkey.

myJob

And while he serves as the team mascot, he is also a community ambassador. Between home games he attends classrooms, functions and community events. Hawkey often visits local schools with the Heat players who read to the students as part of the Hot Readers literacy program. He also makes appearances at minor hockey practices to check out their progress and skill development. “The kids really cheer me on and high five me when they see me, and I appreciate that. I can’t believe how many people recognize me when I’m out in public. It’s really flattering,” he says. Between those experiences, playing in the Mascot All-Star game is an event that stands out for Hawkey. In that contest, his team made it into the second round of the playoffs. Overall, working with the Heat, both on and off the ice, has taught Hawkey what it means to be dedicated to the community. He’s already looking forward to next season.

happy life... send her to the Wild Orange spa

Spring makeup offers endless options It may seem just a touch early, but I am already anticipating the arrival of spring. And with that arrival usually comes a fun assortment of makeup collections to get my hands on. There is a certain shift that happens in us all as the weather warms up. It’s like an awakening in the soul. Birds are singing, the sun is shining, and life feels hopeful and fresh again! After a dreary winter season of rain, many of us need that. It’s wonderful when we can use makeup as a creative tool to really express how we feel and now, more than ever, we can do that using eyeshadow, lipstick and blush. Yes, makeup can make us feel more beautiful because it can hide or enhance what we want people to see, but don’t forget about it’s feel-good and fun qualities too. People can – and do – push the envelope when it comes to makeup and with today’s bold and vibrant pinks, blues, purples and greens, you have a rainbow of colour options to choose from. It is still a good idea, however, to pick just one or two colours or tones at a

Have you chosen a soft grey to make a smoky eye? Pair it with a bold fuchsia lip. Want to mix an eggplant shade on your upper eyelid and gold on your lower eyelid? Leave your lip neutral and subdued. Want a fresh flush of coral on your cheeks? Tone down the eyes with a champagne eyeshadow and lots of mascara and gloss up your lips in a similar shade as the one on your cheeks. The possibilities are there and it’s all about trial and error. Trying or “playing” is crucial to knowing what works

khakis and solid sundresses in bold brights like tangerine or subdued hues are the perfect foundation pieces for this season. Simple tricks like rolling pants to the ankle, adding a boldly coloured skinny belt or printed scarf

can repurpose these pieces for summer 2011. 2. Embrace retro: For a quick update, cork wedges, clogs, homespun style vests, wide–leg pants and embroidered tunics are a great way to embrace this season’s

love of the ’70s and boho chic. It’s easy to get the look for as little as $40. 3. Eliminate the stress. Shop retailers that you can get in and out of fast – the one that display the of-the-moment must–haves at the front of the store.

for your face and features, and in what way. Many people will be drawn towards a colour palette because of just one or two colours in it, but don’t know what to do with the other shades. Keep in mind that most palettes are created with a light highlight colour, a dark contour colour and one or two

medium shades of colour. The light colour will brighten the eye area and should be applied under the brow bone and to the inside corner of the upper eye. The dark colour can be used either in the crease to create depth or can be blended along the lash line as an eye liner. The medium shades are meant to be blended on the eyelid up to the crease or used

on the outside corners of the eyes. Don’t be shy, just try! Skip, hop, or hum your way to a makeup counter to find a fresh perspective and start to express yourself through your makeup this spring. Purple reigns supreme this season

B9

There’s a shade for everyone Purple has long thought to be a noble colour, once relegated only to the upper crust of society. As spring 2011 fashion trends dictate, today purple is being enjoyed by the masses and showing up everywhere from shoes to lip gloss. Tyrian purple may be the oldest known form of the colour purple and the original shade found in the 6th century. Many emperors wore Tyrian purple on their robes, edged in gold. In medieval Europe, only the aristocracy could afford blue shades of dye. Royal purple was developed – a bluer shade of purple – and worn by kings and queens. Today, of course, blue and purple dyes are more commonplace and the masses are quite able to enjoy purple as much as they desire. Still, it’s hard to dissolve the correlation between purple and nobility, and those who don

purple may walk with their heads held a little bit higher and shoulders back. There are a number of spring fashion and beauty trends that are showcasing the vibrant colour this year. Shoes Instead of the classic black or brown shoe, purple shoes can be worn to add a splash of colour to many ensembles. It’s fun and carefree and doesn’t require a complete overhaul of a wardrobe. Wardrobe There were plenty of purple hues coming down the runway at Paris and New York fashion shows. Paintbox colours – bright hues that banish the blahs from winter wardrobes – are the rage. Head-to-toe colour is possible or individuals can do color blocking with two or three bold colours,

such as purple, yellow and orange. Makeup Purple is all over cosmetic products for the spring. From purple-tinted lip gloss to full-colour lipstick to shades of purple on the eyes, purples and lavenders complement a number of skin tones and can add drama day or night. Accessories Of course, people who want just a little pop of purple power can don a purple leather belt or a lilac tie for gentlemen. Check out handbags in purple embossed leather and amethyst earrings that offer subtle purple shades. Expect to see plenty of purple all over the place come the warm-weather season. With a variety of hues and intensities, purple can be a welcome change to anyone’s beauty and fashion regimen.

SPRING VEGGIES HAVE ARRIVED! Includes tomatoes & peppers. Over 40 varieties!

OPEN ALL LONG WEEKEND!!

April and May are busy months at our house this year: wine events galore, high-school graduation preparations and the silly season, known by many others as election time. If your calendar is as packed as ours, here is a red wine to sip with your dinner and a really fun wine event to help you ease the pressures. Laughing Stock 2008 Portfolio ($40/14.6% ABV) is a rich Bordeauxstyle blend from the Okanagan that is 77% Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot making up the remaining 23%. I recently had a bottle to go along with a grilled herbencrusted rack of lamb. On the nose, this wine presents aromas of blackberries and rich, ripe black cherries, dark chocolate, coffee and tobacco. On the palate, I find it structured but silky,

with accompanying flavours of espresso, dark chocolate, cherries, blackberries, vanilla, herbs and spice. It’s a good counterpart to most rare, rich meats—roasted or grilled. I was the guest of Restaurant 62 at one of its recent wine-club events called Molecular Gastronomy, billed as “an unorthodox yet scientific approach to tasting wine with food.” Clearly, everyone who participated was a lover of both wine and food, each of us with our own presumptions and biases regarding how we should combine them. Restaurant 62 co-owner, Alicia Bodaly, led the often-blind-folded, sometimes-noseplugged group through some very unusual combinations and presentations that showed us we had a lot to learn about food and wine. At the end of the “class” we each ordered an entrée from the

menu (included in the ticket price) and enjoyed dinner with friends.

Seven Last Words of Christ Tomorrow, Good Friday, at 3 p.m., Bakerview Mennonite Brethren Church, 2285 Clearbrook Rd, will be hosting the Pacific Spirit Choir from West Vancouver under the direction of Gerald Van Wyck. They’ll be teaming up with a string quartet led by Calvin Dyck to present the Seven Last Words of Christ, composed by Franz Joseph Haydn. Seven Last Words of Christ was originally commis-

sioned by the cathedral at Cadiz in Spain. It took Haydn approximately 15 years to complete the work which he considered one of his greatest. Each of the seven sonatas are preceded by a reading of the appropriate quotation from Christ’s last seven statements on the cross. Haydn also added an introduction and an epilogue titled Teremoto, symbolizing the earthquake after Jesus’ death.

The original orchestral version was so popular that Haydn arranged The Seven Last Words of Christ for string quartet and piano. Also on the program are a couple of short choral works, including Beethoven’s Elegischer Gesang and Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus. Admission is by donation with a suggested donation of $10 or $25 per family. For more information call 604-859-4611.
