Arson eyed in World Gym blaze

WINE HONOURS Mt. Lehman Winery wins prestigious governor general’s award A4

Gas can found near heavily damaged South Fraser Way business Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

A blaze that caused extensive damage to an Abbotsford fitness centre early yesterday morning is being investigated as a possible arson. The fire occurred at about 1:15 a.m. at World Gym, 33122 South Fraser Way. Deputy Fire Chief Dale Unrau said crews arrived to find the interior front entrance and a portion of the roof in flames. No one was in the building. About 30 firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control and kept it from spreading through the rest of the structure. Unrau said the biggest challenge was in tackling the “hot spots” on the roof, which had three levels of materials that were built up from renovations and maintenance over the years. He estimated structural fire damage at $90,000. Unrau said he could not comment on the cause of the fire, as it was still under investigation. However, a police officer on the scene was seen picking up a plastic gas can on the front lawn of an apartment complex at the corner of Mill Lake Road and Lakeview Crescent – just behind World Gym. The same officer also retrieved a plastic cap at the front door of the business. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said over the past five years officers have attended the location for typical business-related incidents, such as break-ins and false alarms, but no unusual criminal activity has been related to the World Gym. Investigators will now examine any video footage obtained from surrounding businesses for suspicious activity. Anyone with information is asked to call Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Agrifair: ‘Feels like we’re up’ Like the new trampoline act it hosted this year, things were looking up at Agrifair. Oganizers are expecting the 2011 attendance at the 101-year-old event to have increased from the 34,000 who turned out last year. “It was a great fair. We had good attendance, and the weather was great, said general manager Pamela Brenner. She said solid figures are not yet known, but noted that the stands were full (approximately 2,000 people) for all three nights of professional rodeo. Also, the Valley Voices Showcase competition, in its third year, filled the stage venue. “There’s some great talent in this area, remarked Brenner, adding that the talent competition has been a solid addition. And, all venues were generally busy. Organizers try to make each fair a little different, and this year there were three popular new attractions – The Spring Up trampoline show out of Quebec, Gary Savard’s magic show also took to the main stage and he walked about the fair, and Dan the One Man Band “was a hit everywhere he went. Brenner said the final numbers are still being crunched, but after 21 years of involvement with the fair, she said Tuesday, “it feels like we’re up.

Local pilot among victims of crash

Three perish as helicopter goes down in northern B.C.

An Abbotsford resident was among three men killed in a helicopter crash on Sunday near Stewart, B.C. Randy Ken Lambert, 35, was the pilot of the Bell 407 helicopter that crashed at about 4 p.m. near Meziadin Lake – in the Nelson Glacier area – about 60 kilometres northeast of Stewart. He flew for Vancouver Island Helicopters (VIH) Ltd., based in North Saanich, B.C. Also killed were passengers Colin Dionne, 40, of Powell River and Mathieu LefebvreMasse, 32, originally from Quebec but recently living in Lund, B.C. The two were doing a mining survey for

Coast Mountain Geological, which had contracted VIH to fly the pair. Crews reached the crash site on Sunday, and confirmed the fatalities. They returned Monday, but weather conditions hampered their recovery efforts. The bodies were then recovered on Tuesday by search and rescue crews. The cause of the crash is being investigated by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada and the BC Coroners Services. VIH declined to speak to media, instead issuing a written statement in which it said the families of the deceased have requested that “their grief and privacy be respected at this time.” “The VIH family would like to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt sympathies to those directly impacted by this tragedy,” the release stated.

In Ryan Walter, the Abbotsford Heat believe they’ve found the ideal frontman to raise the American Hockey League club’s profile in communities across the Fraser Valley. The Heat introduced Walter as their new team president at a press conference on Tuesday morning. “He brings us up a level, and we’re really excited about him,” said Lane Sweeting, a member of the Heat’s local ownership group. “He’s an icon in the hockey world, and he’s an icon in the Fraser Valley.” Walter, a 53-year-old New Westminster native who currently resides in Langley, played 15 NHL seasons with the Washington Capitals, Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver Canucks, winning a Stanley Cup in 1986 with Montreal. Four lose possessions in mobile home blaze

Vikki HOPES

Abbotsford News

Four occupants of an Abbotsford mobile

home lost most of their belongings after a fire destroyed the residence on

Monday night. The blaze occurred at about 7:30 p.m. at the Aloha Trailer

Park and Campsite at 29666 Fraser Highway. Deputy Fire Chief Dale

Unrau said the home was occupied by the owner and three tenants, none of whom had insurance. Unrau said the fire began in a laundry room and was noticed by one of the residents, who tried to put it out by throwing a towel over the flames and stomping on them. He suffered minor smoke inhalation

and minor burns to his legs and was treated in hospital. One other occupant was also treated for smoke inhalation. Unrau said Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS) crews arrived to find the mobile home engulfed in flames, but they were able to prevent it from spreading to nearby homes.

Investigators are still determining the cause, but it is suspected to be related to an electrical issue. Damage caused by fire, smoke and water is estimated at $75,000. AFRS’ emergency social services attended the scene and provided assistance to the occupants.

Walter said one of his chief goals is to deepen the hockey team’s connection to the community. “We’re not trying to twist arms for people to buy tickets – we want them to love to come here, Walter said. “Once people come and experience this game, they want to come back. The goal is really to get out into the community and take our message to people, instead of waiting for them to come to us. “I have a large learning curve, and I will rely very much on our (front office) team. My goal would be to get up to speed real quick, and I love learning. Sweeting said the Heat contacted Walter

last year about doing some consulting. When Mauthe resigned, those discussions took on a different focus. “I think it’s great to have someone as president who can walk into the dressing room, meet the players, and the players can respect him because he has that Stanley Cup ring, Sweeting said. “That connects the team to the front office, and I think that’s really important. Sweeting said the slight attendance dip in the Heat’s sophomore season was not entirely surprising. “I think a lot of people realized how much hockey 20 back-to-back nights are, he said. “We had a sophomore year that we anticipated, but I think now that’s the benchmark. Now we’re growing the business . . . and with Ryan, that will really help.

ABBOTSFORD NEWS I Thursday, August 4, 2011

A voice for children It would be very unfortunate if the all-party committee discussing the appointment of the province’s representative for children and youth does not agree to keep Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond in the role. Turpel-Lafond, a First Nations woman from Saskatchewan who is a former judge, has done an excellent job in what is a very difficult and highly-stressful job. It is her job to let the light shine in cases of child neglect, child deaths and other truly disturbing incidents involving children. As an independent officer of the B.C. legislature, her role is to make the situations public and suggest solutions. It is not to kowtow to government policy or close her eyes to some truly challenging and difficult situations. Turpel-Lafond, as both an aboriginal woman and former judge, has unique skills which put her in a good position to speak up about this. Her background is a real help in this position. Far too many of the children who are in foster care in B.C. are First Nations children

– a much higher proportion than the First Nations share of B.C.’s population. It is important to remember that the initial suggestion of an independent children’s commissioner came out of the inquiry presided over by Judge Thomas Gove. The NDP government followed through on the recommendation. The BC Liberals abolished the position in 2002, shortly after they first came to power, but created the independent representative’s office after Ted Hughes was asked to report on what was becoming a serious problem involving children in care. Turpel-Lafond took the new position in 2006. While she has made politicians squirm on many occasions, she is doing so because she is speaking on behalf of children, families and the general public. These children need an independent voice. They will never get that by relying solely on the existing child welfare system. Turpel-Lafond has demonstrated that she is truly independent. – Black Press

Green Party gets lost in the static Tom

Fletcher

B.C. Views The election of Elizabeth May as Canada’s first-ever Green Party MP was supposed to be a breakthrough for environmental issues. Finally embraced by voters in the organic farming region of Saanich-Gulf Islands, May was given a mandate to change the political conversation about sustainable development, climate change and pollution. The breakthrough might even translate to the provincial level, where Jane Sterk is the latest of a line of B.C. Green leaders to toil in obscurity. It’s too bad they both threw away their scientific credibility last week, by chiming in with the tiny tinfoil-hat movement and its trumped-up opposition to BC Hydro’s transition to wireless meters. May got the tinfoil ball rolling by decrying the use of wireless Internet. It might be contributing to bee colony collapse, she mused on Twitter, to much

ridicule. Apparently she believes that using a computer connected by a wire keeps her free from the radio waves that surround us all. They are generated not only by computers, cell phones and smart meters but all sources of light, including the infrared that accompanies body heat. May then cited the much-hyped revelation that the World Health Organization has listed radio-frequency waves as a possible carcinogen. Radio waves such as those generated by cell phones and wireless routers were moved to a classification called 2B, which also includes such volatile substances as pickled vegetables. What this actually means is that health effects can’t be ruled out. It’s impossible to prove that something’s impossible. But after many years of study, the evidence that cell phones and such devices cause illness remains at precisely zero. With May alongside, Sterk called a news conference last week to demand a halt to BC Hydro’s smart meter program. The first question from a reporter was, why are you reversing the BC Greens’ 2009 election platform, which called for installation of smart meters by 2012, followed by imposition of time-of-use elec-

tricity pricing to reduce consumption? Sterk expressed surprise, apparently having forgotten her own position from only two years ago. Political credibility takes years to build but only seconds to destroy. I attended the B.C. Green Party’s 2007

Political credibility takes years to build but only seconds to destroy.” leadership convention at which Sterk was elected. It came after a long and divisive debate over whether cell phones could be used at the meeting. They were finally allowed, but this “issue” apparently took up more time than any policy discussion. Why is BC Hydro putting in smart meters? First, mechanical meters are obsolete and soon won’t be available. Second, B.C. is about twice as big as Germany. Finding, let alone fixing damaged

power lines is a monumental task. A smart grid (much more than just digital meters) is not only self-assessing, it can be made self-healing, rerouting power to blacked-out areas when weather, transformer failure or vehicle accidents cut power. Do smart meters continuously communicate with a “mother ship,” as some claim? Do they record when you get up at night to pee? No and no. These are the kinds of nonsense claims that surround the smart meter issue. BC Hydro says four to six transmissions from a smart meter to a local hub each day amount to about a minute in total. Radio wave exposure is equivalent to a half-hour cell phone call every 20 years. The British National Cancer Institute just published an extensive study of children with brain tumours and exposure to cell phones. Like previous studies, it found no correlation. Somebody should send a postcard to the Green Party and tell them about it. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com

Good on guys who rescued trapped goose On Thursday, July 28, a friend and I were over at Mill lake where we saw a Canada goose in distress, and were quite concerned for it as it was not able to fly, and the resident

eagle saw a meal. He was continually dive bombing him, but the other geese were protecting their buddy. After a couple of minutes, three young guys showed up and

proceeded to take off their shoes and into the water they went, over to where the distressed goose was, and grabbed hold of the fishing line that was wrapped around the

legs, body and wings of this poor bird. They pulled it close and managed to pick him up and between the three of them they unwound a large amount of fishing line

away from his body, wings and legs. They managed to get it all off and they freed one very happy goose. Without the help of these young guys, that

goose would have been a meal for the eagle. Good on you, guys! To the fishermen that like to fish at Mill Lake, or any lake for that matter, please do not leave your fishing

line or hooks in the water or on the shore. Dispose of it properly. It’s just not right to do otherwise. J. Robertson

Justice doesn’t seem to value human life Re: July 19 article, “Driver banned for life.” I have to wonder if both the judge and Crown Counsel have FASD or what pressure or gifts were applied to reach that judgment. First off, why was a pediatrician used as a specialist and not a psychiatrist? Even without that, the diagnosis of him supposedly not know-

ing the differences and his past driving history should have told any sane and uninfluenced person that the sentencing recommendation was a joke, as he’d already proven that he’ll continue to

drive even with the ban in place. What’s our criminal justice system going to do the next time he kills someone – send him on a taxpayerpaid Caribbean vacation, since obviously he is above justice?

Maybe someone should pressure the MPs for legislation making judges and Crown counsels liable to lawsuits in the cases where people are killed or injured and where there is obviously a miscar-

riage of justice. It seems lately especially in the

Abbotsford area that human lives don’t rate the value of even

a simple burglary charge sentence. Wayne Lucas

Outlaws punch ticket to softball nationals Earning a berth to the Canadian U16 Softball Championships represents a landmark achievement for the Abbotsford 95A Outlaws bantam girls squad. The Outlaws are believed to be the first girls fastpitch team from Abbotsford to secure a trip to nationals. This year’s tournament runs Aug. 17-21 in Winnipeg, and the Outlaws punched their ticket by virtue of a bronze medal at the provincial championship last week in Richmond. “This is a big deal for Abbotsford Minor Fastpitch Association and our local community,” said assistant coach Glen Hayward. “They’ve played awesome all year, going 13-0 in league play, and deserve to be there along with 13 other top teams from across Canada. We are very proud of them.” The Abbotsford softball team’s roots in the community go back generations. Outlaws shortstop Julia Willson, for instance, is a third-generation player. Julia’s

grandmother, Annie Corke, is in the Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the Bradner ladies softball/slo-pitch program, and her mother Jody played for the Mt. Lehman Angels in the late 1970s. Beyond this year’s provincial bronze medal, the Outlaws 95A have won two B.C. titles, one bronze medal at the Western Canadian Championships, and one silver medal at the U.S. Western World Series over the past three years. IN BRIEF: Q Outlaws centre fielder Chelsea Jenner has been selected as a late addition to the B.C. women’s softball team for the Western Canada Summer Games, as an injury replacement. The Western Games run Aug. 5-14 in Kamloops. Q The Outlaws are seeking sponsors to help offset the expenses for the trip to nationals. For more information, call Linda Horacsek at 604-820-9601 or email horacsek@shaw.ca.

Sports

In Brief Q Brandon Todoruk of the Abbotsford Cardinals has been honoured for his huge offensive season, earning four awards from the B.C. Premier Baseball League. Todoruk won the elite under-18 circuit’s triple crown, finishing first in batting average (.404), runs batted in (32), and home runs (three, tied with five other players). He was named the BCPBL’s top offensive player, rookie of the year, top batter, and first team all-conference infielder. Q Abbotsford volleyballer Tyler Koslowsky has been named to the B.C. men's team for the Wester n Canada Summer Games. Koslowsky, a recent Mennonite Educational Institute grad who will play for the Trinity Western Spartans this fall, made the cut following a three-week training camp in Kamloops. The Western Games are also in Kamloops, Aug. 5-14.

Abbotsford News

Abbotsford’s Adam Hadwin moved up to No. 211 in the world after making the cut on the PGA Tour on the weekend.

Hadwin is Canada’s top-ranked golfer After making the cut at the PGA Tour’s Greenbrier Classic on the weekend, Adam Hadwin is now the top Canadian in the World Golf Rankings. Fresh off a fourthplace finish at the RBC Canadian Open at Vancouver’s Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club the previous week, Hadwin shot 7071-68-68 at The Old White TPC in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. The 23-yearold Abbotsford golfer finished at three under par, tied for 32nd, and earned $32,486 US.

Hadwin, a Canadian Tour regular, earned his spot in the Greenbrier Classic field by virtue of his top-10 finish at the Canadian Open. The result boosted Hadwin from 214th to 211th in the World Golf Rankings – one spot ahead of Calgary’s Stephen Ames. David Hearn (267), Graham Delaet (365) and Jon Mills (434) round out the top five Canadians. Mike Weir, the longtime standard-bearer for Canadian men’s golf, is ranked No. 521, ninth among Canucks.

Ruling goes against Rebels

ON SALE NOW!

The West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association semifinal series between the Valley Rebels and the Tri-City Bandits has produced compelling games, but the happenings in the boardroom might be even more interesting. In the aftermath of the Bandits’ 7-5 victory in Game 3 last Wednesday, the Rebels lodged an official complaint with the WCSLA, charging that one of the officials assigned to the game plays for one of the Bandits’ feeder teams in Port Moody. WCSLA commissioner Iris Parkyn initially ruled in the Rebels’ favour, and the two teams were set to replay Game 3. But Tri-City appealed to the B.C. Lacrosse senior directorate, and at a hearing Tuesday evening, the initial ruling was overturned and TriCity was awarded the victory. Rebels coach Jim

Nishiyama was none too pleased with the outcome of the boardroom drama. “I don’t have any explanation for it, he said. “It’s Tri-City. Everything goes in their favour, no matter what it is. The Bandits carried a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series into Game 4 on Wednesday evening, but that result was unavailable at press time. Game 5, if necessary, would run Thursday at North Surrey Rec Centre at 8 p.m. The Rebels will be without starting goalie Matt Morehouse, after he injured his back at work. Backup Cam Janzen takes over between the pipes. “It’s just a wicked turn of events, Nishiyama said of the Morehouse injury. “He’s in the lumber business, and I guess he was lifting some wood with some other guys and his back just turned the wrong way.
