A woman driving a car that was having mechanical problems is believed to be the trigger for a nine-vehicle crash on the Mission Bridge during the Tuesday afternoon rush hour. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the woman, who was heading south, had stopped to activate the hazard lights

on her Kia when she was rear-ended by a Toyota Sienna. This caused a chain-reaction collision in which ﬁve other vehicles suffered minor damage. A second collision then occurred when a white pickup that had stopped in time was rear-ended by a Dodge pickup that had experienced brake failure. The woman in the Kia and the two occupants of the white pickup were injured.

Mission’s Kenny Hess will be performing at the Rockin’ River Music Festival this weekend.

When Mission’s Kenny Hess was a kid, he dreamed of playing music for a living. But when he began playing gigs as a teenager, he figured he’d only play for a few years before having to get a “real job.” Luckily for country music fans, that day never came. “I’m almost 50 and still singing for my supper, so life’s pretty good,” said Hess, while talking about his life, his music and the Rockin’ River Music Festival which he’s co-organizing. The festival began in 2008. This year, Rockin’ River is set to host its biggest expected turnout at Mission Raceway Park beginning Aug. 12 with a great lineup. Emily Taylor Adams from Langley and Chad Brownlee of Vancouver both won B.C. Country Music Association’s best vocalist this year. In fact, quite a few of the performers have won awards, but none has accumulated the kind of hardware as Maple Ridge’s Rick Tippe. “You couldn’t carry him in a pickup, the amount of awards he won in B.C. and Canada,” joked Hess. The son of Country Music Hall-of-Famer Elmer Tippe, Rick will be joined by Elmer’s grandsons at the festival, the Johnson Brothers, rounding out the family affair. Hess said the elder Tippe is retired from his fiddle-playing days, but still comes out to the event every year. There are some big names, too, with Travis Tritt headlining Saturday night, and the always entertaining Sawyer Brown. Continued on A6

Industrial street parking for big rigs put on idle Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News

A pilot project allowing long haul truckers to park their rigs overnight on some industrial area roads has been put on ice. Council has instructed city staff to provide more details on the proposal, including what roads would be used. Street parking has been a hot topic since the report from the Mayor’s Task Force on Commercial Truck Parking was made public in May. Originally, the report recommended allowing some residential area parking for local truck owners. However, a large public outcry, and safety concerns expressed by the Abbotsford police and fire services, convinced the task force to abandon that idea. “The police were absolutely opposed,” said Mayor George Peary. He cited a recent incident where a flag person was accidentally run over by a dump truck. “If a truck can’t see an adult in flourescent gear, what chance does a child have?” said Peary. “Commercial

trucks do not belong in residential areas.” The decision to postpone industrial area parking was made after several councillors expressed concerns. Coun. John Smith said commercial businesses, some of which were required by the city to landscape the front of their properties, wouldn’t want a semi parked in front of them. He feels trucks need to be on private parking. “Once you open the flood gates, it’s difficult to control and police,” said Smith. Many councillors agreed, adding there are not enough bylaw officers to ensure drivers don’t take advantage of street parking. It was also noted that drivers may be reluctant to park on designated pay parking facilities when the city is allowing free street parking. Council did approve the remaining three recommendations – to fast track applications for new truck parking facilities, use some gravel pits for truck parking and encourage maintenance of existing truck parking provided by the Ministry of Transportation. Council will re-examine the industrial street option at a future meeting.

Fraser Valley Regional District directors voted to cooperate with Metro Vancouver at a special board meeting Tuesday and take part in consultations on possible waste-to-energy facilities. But that doesn’t mean the fight is over to stop Metro Vancouver’s plan to burn garbage. “We’ve lost round one, but the fight isn’t over,” Abbotsford director John Smith said at the board meeting. “We also lost round one in the fight against SE2,” he added, but eventually defeated the proposed diesel-powered electricity plant in Sumas, Washington in 2006 after a groundswell of opposition by Fraser Valley residents. He called Metro Vancouver’s plan to burn garbage using WTE technology “a financial disaster waiting to happen” and predicted that in the end no

But Peary said that “accusatory approach” won’t help the FVRD achieve its goals, and could have a negative impact on the region’s economy. “I do not advocate an approach which calls for protests and speaks negatively of our provincial politicans,” he said, but a “thoughtful strategy on how we respond to the approval.” The environment minister’s approval included provisions for consultations between Metro Vancouver and the FVRD, along with creation of working groups to address air quality concerns. Mission Mayor James Atebe agreed the FVRD needs to have input into Metro Vancouver’s plan, but he called on the minister to define exactly what he meant by “consultations” and to find a way to pay for the region’s participation in the talks. Yale director Dennis Adamson didn’t agree with the idea of letting the larger Metro Vancouver regional district walk all over the smaller FVRD and build its WTE facilities. “I don’t think we should shut up,” he said. “I think we should scream and yell ... this is no time to be quiet.”

Abbotsford Coun. John Smith said the city is missing out on $334,939 in federal funding because of a Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) board decision. Every five years, the federal government gives a portion of the gas tax collected to the provinces, which subsequently give the funds to the various regional districts to distribute to municipalities on a per capita basis. The funding, used as part of the Regionally Significant Program, has to be used toward projects that “lead toward reduced greenhouse gas emissions, cleaner air or cleaner water.” This year, the FVRD received $13,815,552. Abbotsford, because it has approximately 48 per cent of the population in the FVRD, was due to receive $6,698,775. However, the FVRD decided the three largest members (Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Mission) would donate five per cent of their funding, to be divided among the

smaller members (Hope, Kent, Harrison Hot Springs and the seven electoral areas A to G). Because of the five per cent allocation, Chilliwack will have to contribute approximately $288,000 while Mission gives up $192,000. Smith said the seven electoral areas – which have seven votes on the board – have a combined population of 17,693. Abbotsford, which has a population of 135,866, only has five votes, one for each board member. Abbotsford Mayor George Peary and Couns. Simon Gibson and Moe Gill voted with Smith against the allocation. Coun. Patricia Ross, who is also chair of the FVRD, voted in favour. Smith wanted the vote to be weighted, meaning Abbotsford board members have the equivalent of five votes each because of its larger size. Ross said the district sought legal opinions and the vote did not need to be weighted. She said the funding system

gives the largest communities the most money and leaves nothing for the smaller areas. “This was a way to share the pot with our neighbours,” said Ross. In 2006, the last time the funding was available, the FVRD voted to allocate 10 per cent from the larger towns. “A lot has changed and maybe we don’t feel quite as generous,” said Smith. Abbotsford is currently planning for a new water supply from Stave Lake which is estimated to cost close to $284 million. The funding is eligible to go towards that project. “I know it’s only $335,000, but on the other hand, it’s $335,000,” said Smith. In January of this year, Abbotsford council considered the option of leaving the FVRD in favour of becoming a single tier governance, saving up to $1.5 million a year. The process could take more than two years and staff are continuing to examine the idea.

MOTORCYCLIST DIES A 44-year-old Chilliwack man who crashed his motorcycle on Highway 1 in Abbotsford on Friday afternoon has died in hospital. RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen said the man was travelling with a group of motorcyclists westbound on the freeway at McCallum Road, and lost control of his bike when he was unable to stop for traffic that had slowed. The rider slid down the road but did not collide with any other traffic. He suffered serious head injuries and was airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster.

MISSING GIRL Abbotsford Police are asking for help in tracking down a missing 15-year-old girl. Celine Lynn Johnny resides in a home operated by a charitable society, and was reported missing by staff on July 28 after failing to return from meeting a family member at a local mall. Const. Ian MacDonald said the teen had been missing for about four hours at the time police were called, but had been due back much sooner than that. She has not contacted staff to let them know she is safe. Police have attempted to contact the family member that Johnny JOHNNY was supposedly meeting, but have not been able to reach her. The relative lives in the Interior of B.C. Police have contacted other relatives and friends of Johnny’s, and believe she is still in the company of that person. MacDonald said police are concerned because Johnny has medical needs which include having to carry an EpiPen for allergic reactions, and an inhaler. She is described as five feet fall, 110 pounds with brown eyes and hair. If anyone has information about her whereabouts, they are asked to contact the Abbotsford Police Department at 605-8595225.

Country music festival begins this Friday From A4

“Travis Tritt is honestly one of the best performers you’ll ever see,” said Hess, who just returned from a tour in Arizona, where country music is king. He said many Canadian singers make a good portion of their living doing shows down south, but events like the Rockin’ River Music Fest bring awareness to homegrown talent. And there’s plenty of that, too. Main stage performers like Merv Tremblay, Brent Lee and Ken McCoy are just a few of the performers who call Mission home. Hess said it was difficult to get fans out the first two years, but with bigger name stars and word of mouth people are seeing Mission as a country music destination. And Hess has guaranteed nobody is going to be

mad at his choices this year. Hess has released 11 albums over the past 20 years while receiving eight consecutive awards for best traditional artist of the year in the B.C. Country Music Awards, and will also be performing at the festival. Hess said he’s really looking forward to sharing his style of old-time country music with fans, which he calls his “Merle Haggard-style.” But through all the accolades, Hess has remained a humble man from Mission. “I feel very lucky to be able to do this and I get embarrassed, actually, talking about awards. The sawmill worker doesn’t get an award, but he has a job to do, too. I do this because I love it.” The festival begins Friday, Aug. 12 at 2 p.m. in Mission Raceway Park. Fire declared arson A fire that occurred at an Abbotsford fitness centre last week has been officially declared an arson. Abbotsford Police Departmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s major crime unit is heading the investigation into the blaze at World Gym at 33122 South Fraser Way, and are asking for anyone with information to come forward. Remove temptation

A pack of cigarettes. Loose change. They are items not worth that much, but leaving them in plain sight in your vehicle could lead to an ICBC claim and having to have repairs made after a break-in. There apparently is no target too small for local thieves. While some of the recent thefts from vehicles are of higher-priced items like iPods, cameras and satellite radios, many appear to be a case of someone breaking into the vehicle, then just taking whatever happens to be lying around. We’re halfway through summer (well, according to the calendar, at least), so it might be the easy way to blame youth out of school and bored with many of these crimes. The thing is, according to police, there are peaks and valleys for these break-ins throughout the year, including times when school is in.

So how do we stop these crimes? Some of the onus is on the vehicle owners. Do the little things. Make sure your vehicle is locked anytime you leave it. Park in a well-lit area. Most importantly, make sure nothing of value is visible inside. (That’s another reason for parking in a well-lit area.) In terms of how we as a society can cut down on these crimes, there are two schools of thought. One would see the thieves, when caught, face the full force of the justice system. If you catch them early enough in the cycle, you can break them of the bad habits. The other idea is to provide more opportunities for youth in the community. The problem is, to some youth, breaking into vehicles is their leisure activity. Don’t make it easy for them. – Black Press

B.C. Views B.C.’s job market held steady in July, with unemployment at 7.3 per cent. The latest Statistics Canada job data were released as global ﬁnancial markets teetered on the edge of another recession. B.C. was last reminded of its vulnerability to world events in late 2008 and early 2009, when ﬁnancial markets froze up and governments around the world started frantically borrowing to bail out major industries. There are still idle construction cranes around B.C., although the vital commodity markets have recovered. It was the sickening skid in provincial revenues, which began to reveal itself during the 2009 election campaign, that triggered the B.C. government’s panicked grab for the harmonized sales tax and its transition fund. If blame is important to you, blame Stephen Harper for the HST, but please don’t believe Bill

Vander Zalm and the NDP when they claim it was merely a political plot covered up with lies. The truth is much scarier than the scare tactics of these political opportunists. Globalization isn’t optional, and there are lots of countries out there ready to beat us up and take our lunch money if we give them half a chance. The Canadian and U.S. central banks have held interest rates near zero since the crisis. If something more goes wrong, they are “out of bullets,” as economists say. Here’s another economic fact about the year 2011. For the ﬁrst time in Canadian history, the majority of people with employer-supported pensions now work for government or its agencies, rather than the private sector. Despite all the political blather about left and right, more spending versus less, government keeps growing. That’s true for Canada and for B.C., where government grew every year of the allegedly tight-ﬁsted reign of Gordon Campbell. There has been lots of bleating about HST on adult-sized clothing for children. Claiming your hubby’s clothes are actually for a bulky child may be the oldest

scam in sales tax evasion. This is an example of what economists call the paradox of public ﬁnance. Economists like consumption taxes because they’re difﬁcult to avoid. Many taxpayers dislike them for the same reason. This is the road that leads to Greece,

ity. Lengthy paid leaves, yet more paid professional development days, oh, and a double-digit wage increase after the rest of the public service has accepted zero. I attended the recent BCTF convention in Victoria, where this entitlement culture was on display. During a news conference about the BCTF’s many demands, someone stood behind Education Minister George Abbott and held up a sign for TV cameras that demanded “No Tankers.” This was no campus radical slipped in from the street. It was a middle-aged BCTF delegate, one of many decrying the industrial economy we need to pay for their pensions. B.C. aspires to be a shipbuilding economy but it can’t do shipping? According to our public sector union elites, we’re too precious to allow oil tankers in B.C.? Apparently some have still failed to notice that oil tankers have been going up and down the coast for decades, and back and forth under the Lion’s Gate Bridge for years.

No one will stand up to blueberry industry

Re: Andrew Holota’s column, “Quiet in the fields.” Thank you, thank you, thank you for your editorial about blueberry cannons. After 10 years of repeatedly meeting with civic politicians, provincial MLAs, various ministers of agriculture and the blueberry council, I’ve learned that not one of them has the balls to stand up to the blueberry industry and say “no more.” It all about votes and money. They shake your hand, tell you something must be done, they’ll look into it,

the poor blueberry farmer, pat you on the head, nice to meet you, and send you on your way. The ministry will pay for study after study which they blatantly ignore when it concludes cannons aren’t an effective bird deterrent. Which they aren’t. After the initial couple of weeks of cannons blasting, starlings very quickly get used to the noise and are back full force. Since last year, blueberry farmers are supposed to only use cannons if they actually see, and record, flocks of birds

present in their fields, not just set them up to blast all day long. Some do, some don’t. Your word against theirs as to whether the birds are there. One farmer said, as his cannons were blasting, you couldn’t see the birds because they were all down in the bushes. I was so busy trying to conceal my laughter and astonishment that I couldn’t ask why the birds were still in the bushes if the cannons were so effective. My husband and I, and other farm neighbours, are continually amazed that it’s allowed for someone to set up a blue-

I share your wish that someday, propane cannons will be a thing of the past. In sharing this sentiment however, I do not support your characterization of the ‘Right to Farm’ legislation as archaic. There continues to be much misunderstanding about the intent and scope of the legislation. In its quest to obtain buy-in from the farm community and placate those elements within that community who could not conceive of any restrictions on what they considered to be traditional farm practices, the moniker ‘right to farm’ was

used to sell the legislation. In retrospect, I think that was a mistake. The legislation – Farm Practices Protection Act – allows certain prescribed farm practices, but it does not provide for carte blanche and indiscriminate use of practices such as propane cannons. In recent years there has been increased use of a range of bird deterrents as you so aptly noted in your article. And while the noise from cannons can be very irritating, and there continue to be growers who fail to operate within the prescribed regulations, there has been a marked

reduction in the number of blueberry farms who depend solely on propane cannons. Perhaps because of the significant expansion in blueberry production in recent years, there appears to be more explosions in the growing areas. I think that as more farmers and their neighbours become invested in each other’s needs for peaceful coexistence, we will see further reduction in the use of propane cannons. In the meantime, let us hope that continued research in bird management will lead to the eventual discontinuation of propane cannons. Ron Charles

Economics of teachers’ pay

Isn’t it amazing that our school teachers don’t have any understanding of economics. In B.C., the average salary for a school teacher is a high of $71,831 in school district #20, Kootenay Columbia to a low of $63,869 in School District 84 Vancouver Island West. SD79 Cowichan Valley is $69,510. Ontario pays the highest average salary of $75,688, Alberta second at $74,299, and B.C. third at $72,242. Alberta placed number one in literacy scores and B.C. came in second. Now Susan Lambert of the B.C. Teachers Federation says that B.C. teachers are underpaid to those of Ontario and Alberta. Now the economics. Ontario’s tax rate is 5.05 per cent, the lowest in Canada with a population of 13,210,667. B.C.’s tax rate is 5.06 per cent, second lowest in Canada with a population of 4,510,858. The reason B.C. does not pay the same is because Ontario has 8,699,809 more taxpayers. Alberta’s tax rate is 10 per cent, with a population of 3,724,832. Alberta collects much more in taxes from taxpayers than B.C. does. Susan Lambert must realize that it is the taxpayers that pay school teacher wages.

A WTE plant will cost us threefold

In B.C., if she thinks that the present government should adjust the teachers wages to that of Ontario and Alberta, then the B.C. taxpayers just have to pay more taxes. And now to the average B.C. working person. Your teachers in B.C. on average are paid $63,869 to $71,831, with total working days of 188 after all professional days, stat holidays, Christmas and Easter breaks, and summer holidays are taken into account. You, on the other hand, will work 238 days after stat holidays, and a average of 15 days vacation time are taken into account, at nowhere near the amount of these salaries. Now review the above, and think to yourselves, is it fair that you the taxpayer should sweeten the teachers’ pay package with higher taxes? In summary, Susan Lambert has to take into account that with the present salary structure, along goes all that time off without ever affecting the pay cheque. It is amazing that these university graduate people are teaching our kids and yet they cannot understand the above economics. Joe Sawchuk

Is B.C. a corporatocracy? The Liberals’ decision on Private Power (IPP’s), the plunder of our province through indiscriminate mining, the push to sell our water and the approval of Waste To Energy (WTE) are some examples of our corporate Liberals. When we become more proficient at recycling, and using Markham, Ontario’s recycling efforts as an example, there will be no garbage to incinerate, so the approval of a WTE plant will cost us threefold. First, the cost of the plant. Then penalties for lack of combustibles in the garbage which is then sent back to the transfer site. Third, paying the WTE owners (IPP) for power it cannot produce or sell until the contract ends, usually 25 to 30 years. Gary Huntbatch

Abbotsford hospitality for Strathcona Troop On the weekend, my wife and I attended Abbotsford’s Agrifair, to see our son in the Strathcona’s Mounted Troop. It was a great show and I would like to recognize the contribution of a small group of women who volunteer to feed the soldiers, who ride and work with the troop. Each day of the fair, these women make great breakfasts and suppers for the two dozen Strathconas, who are based in Edmonton, Alberta.

This type of hospitality, done on a volunteer basis, is a wonderful contribution that is greatly appreciated by those lucky enough to receive it. ‘Tour de kids’ for mom Katie BARTEL Black Press

Fifty two days, 8,046 kilometres, 16 flat tires, one cyclist. From June 1 to July 26, Chilliwack resident Jason Campbell rode his Giant bike, with a loaded travel trailer on the back, from St. John’s Newfoundland to Vancouver in support of Abbotsford Canuck Place. He did it for his mom. Campbell’s mom Paulette died in 2005 after a 15-year battle with cancer that started with breast cancer and ended with bone and lymph node cancer. She was 50 years old. On a brief stop in Chilliwack before the final 100 km of his trek to Canuck Place in Vancouver, the retired corporal told media of his hopes to raise enough money to have a wing dedicated to his mom at the new Canuck Place being built in Abbotsford. So far, he’s raised

approximately $5,000 of his $20,000 goal. Being the primary caregiver for his mom in the last four months of her life, and knowing how painful it was for him to see her deteriorate, he could only imagine how devastating it would be for parents going through similar situations with their young children. And no matter how tough or hilly the roads became, how

long and arduous Ontario seemed, how fatigued his legs were, or how selfish the drivers on the roads acted, visions of his mom and thoughts of sick kids kept his pedals moving. “Those little kids who are sick, and even my mom when she was sick, they still got up smiling,” he said. “And if they could do that, I could keep pedaling.” In 2009, he

rode to Regina, Saskatchewan, where he raised over $7,000 for the hospice his mom passed away in. Even though he’s been riding a bike since he was a kid, he doesn’t consider himself an avid cyclist. “It’s just what I do,” he said. Every restaurant and bar in Abbotsford has its regulars, but there is likely only one Jim Costinak. On any given lunch hour he can be found at Ekos, sitting in the same corner, doing a crossword puzzle or reading the newspaper. He appears not much different than any regular, but he is, in his generosity. Each day, Jim will ask the servers whether they are having lunch. If they are, it goes on his tab. It’s a gesture that is much appreciated. And, if he sees someone he knows, or recognizes, he will surprise them by sending some of the Ekos baklava over to their table for dessert – on him. He loves baklava. And if he has received good service from his doctor, chiropractor, optometrist, accountant, insurance agent or really any business in town, he’ll call them and find out what they want for dinner. Ekos

Jim Costinak’s warm heart is well-known at Ekos, his favourite restaurant. will deliver that, on Jim’s tab. Many nights he has dinner brought to families in their homes. They say, “You don’t have to do that,” but he wants to. And this magnanimity goes on, day after day. To the Ekos staff, it appears as though Jim likes to surprise just about anybody by buying them something tasty to eat, like

he’s picking names at random out of the phone book, but he says it’s not quite that arbitrary. “It’s people I know, who’ve been good to me over the years,” he explains. So when did he win the lottery? He shakes his head. “I’m not rich or anything, I just feel ... I just want to do it.” Jim is a postal work-

er who had a 50-year career with Canada Post, about the last 35 years in Abbotsford. At 72, he still has a route of community mail boxes. He starts when most people are still in bed, works almost a full day, and is done in time to take up his position at Ekos for lunch. He staked out that table a long time ago, back to when it was Barney’s Beach Hut, even during the brief time it had a French name, and even way back to when it was the House on the Hill Restaurant. It has changed hands five times, and Jim has always been part of the deal. “I’m in my own corner. I just want to sit down, relax and do my crossword,” he said. “It’s my home away from home. It’s my watering hole.” Owner Terry Mankatala said he has enjoyed Jim’s company for the four years he has been the proprietor of Ekos. “He’s just a helpful person – a happy person.”

The Fraser Valley Real Estate Board processed 1,322 sales on the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) in July, an increase of 20 per cent compared to the 1,101 sales during the same month last year. However, that is 17 per cent fewer than the 1,588 sales in June. While sales decreased month-over-month, listings went up. The board posted 2,931 new properties on its MLS in July – six per cent more than received in June and 24.5 per cent more than in July 2010 – pushing overall inventory to 10,073 active listings, the highest level in the Fraser Valley since last summer. “Last month, we were busier listing rather than selling properties, which is good news for prospective buyers,” said Sukh Sidhu, president of the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board (FVREB). “A buyers’ market means realtors will have more homes to show their clients and increased negotiating power on their behalf. “For sellers in this market, expert guidance to determine your home’s list price is essential. Overall, we’re seeing home prices remain strong compared to

Castonguay, Haslam win at Ledgeview A birdie on the 18th hole lifted Todd Castonguay to victory in the men's event at the Ledgeview Club Championships last weekend. Castonguay, a former junior hockey player who suited up for the Abbotsford Pilots and the New Westminster Bruins, opened the two-round tourney with a solid 69, and hung on for the win after shooting 76 in the second round. He edged B.C. senior team player Brian Bates and Zone 3 champion George Christensen for the title. “The competition is pretty intense and winning a Ledgeview title means a lot," said Castonguay, a first-time Ledgeview club champ. On the net side, tennis coach Milan Kelesi squeaked out a one-stroke victory over Murray Conn, shooting 137, three under par, over the two rounds. Hans Weirich and Jon Revane finished tied third. In the senior 55-plus division, Jim Pearce’s 146 gross earned him a playoff against Bates, who competed in both divisions. Pearce won the title at the second hole. Paul Pike won the net side with two sparkling rounds of 75 for a three-stroke victory over Ewald Klatt. Ron Carlton, who will be 78 this month, won the super seniors 65-plus title with rounds of 76 and 81. The super seniors squared 80-plus title was won by Roy Kelso with a 177 total. On the ladies side, Val Haslam won her

sixth club championship since 2003, shooting a two-day total of 153 to edge Heather Lang and Margaret Hong. Irene Mitzell won the ladies net title, shooting 135 net to edge Krys Beketa. Grace Rustulka claimed the senior ladies championship with a score of 180, three strokes ahead of Heather Shaw, while Monica Kang won the super seniors for the second year in succession.

Mosquitos swat competition Abbotsford Angels win three B.C. medals in age 10-11 division Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News

If the results of last week’s provincial championships are any indication, there’s plenty of reason to be optimistic about the future of Abbotsford boys baseball. In the mosquito (age 10-11) category, a trio of Abbotsford Angels teams made it to the B.C. final in their respective divisions. The Abbotsford AAA Tier 2 team and the Single A squad both came home with gold. The Tier 2 boys went a perfect 6-0 at their provincial tourney in Burnaby, capped by a dominant 7-0 victory in the final over Prince George. The Single A boys posted a 3-1 record in the round robin, with their lone loss coming against Richmond. The Angels avenged that loss in the championship game, as they blitzed Richmond 16-1 to claim the title. A third Abbotsford team, the AAA Tier 1 squad, earned a silver medal. They suffered an upset loss in the B.C. final, falling 14-5 to Chilliwack. “The depth of this age group is just exceptional,” observed Shawn Kelly, coach of the AAA Tier 2 squad. “It really means that the peewee and bantam levels should just get better and better in the future, assuming these kids stay engaged.” Kelly pointed out that the

Abbotsford’s Brad Kufske helped Team Canada to an 11th-place finish at the World Junior Championships in Brazil. The Canadian junior nats wrapped up the tournament with a three-set victory over Japan (25-23, 25-20, 25-19) in the 11th-12th placing game on Wednesday. Kufske, a Yale Secondary grad who plays his university volleyball for the Trinity Western Spartans, was a key contributor for Canada throughout the tournament. He racked up a team-high 22 points, including 19 kills, in a win over Egypt, and scored the final two points of the game. He also led Canada with 17 total points (16 kills, one block) in a four-set loss to Germany in Tuesday’s consolation semifinal. Canada had gotten off to a rocky start at the World Juniors, dropping all three games in pool play to Iran, Belgium and Serbia. They rallied in the consolation round, winning three in a row over Japan, Egypt and Tunisia before falling in the consolation semis to Germany. The Canadians knocked off Japan for the second time in the tourney to seal the 11th-place finish.

Susan was born on September 29, 1920 in Zentral, Russia, one of Abraham and Anna Sawatzky’s 12 children. The Sawatzky family immigrated to Canada in 1925, settling in Saskatchewan and later moving to BC in 1930. Susan married Peter Enns on April 20, 1941.
