The MEI Screaming Eagles Marching Band enjoyed one of the best weekends in the history of the program, as a part of the Grey Cup festivities in Vancouver over the weekend. Sponsored by Scotiabank, 86 students in the band lent their enthusiasm to numerous events, starting on Friday when they played

for a cauldron lighting ceremony, and during the Vanier Cup university championship. On Saturday they played before an audience of 100,000 in Vancouver’s Grey Cup parade, and that evening they played a Grey Cup gala event attended by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Sunday, the Eagles performed for the CFL commissioner’s breakfast, and played in the

Christmas tree lighting Entertainment and visit from Santa in historic downtown Kelsey KLASSEN Contributor

Throughout the 22-year history of the lighting of the Christmas tree in Abbotsford, the lights could have been more impressive, according to Tina Stewart, executive director of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association. Prepare to be impressed this year. “People will be shocked with the new lighting system.” At an investment of $15,000, Stewart was quick to point out who is footing the bill. “People always think it’s the city that puts this on,” says Stewart, “but the whole event is compliments of the historic downtown merchants. “In the last eight to nine years ... we’ve worked on the older buildings, prettying them up to make it a shopping destination. “Now people can grab a cup of coffee and walk around. There are so many boutiques and treasures here, all these great shops with things you’d never find in a mall.”

The event kicks off at 1 p.m. with young musicians from the Sound of Music school on the main stage, followed by Aerial the Elephant, from Aerial Dance Academy. Brook Harris and select singers from Darcy D Vocal Studio will then lead into a performance by Dynamic Dance. At 3 p.m., Santa will arrive on a 1963 fire truck, accompanied by members of Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service, the Abbotsford Police Department and the Silver Fox Air Cadet band. Mayor-elect Bruce Banman will be on hand to join in a Christmas carol sing-along with A & D Music School from 3:40 p.m. until just before the main attraction. Shortly before 5 p.m., a countdown will herald the lighting of the 80-foot tree. In addition to free hot chocolate and cookies, a variety of food vendors, make-and-take crafts for children waiting in line to see Santa, and Christmas-themed booths, Stewart promises a number of surprises. The Christmas tree lighting will take place at the intersection of Essendene Avenue and West Railway Street, Sunday, Dec. 4 from 1-5 p.m.

Edna and Ron Clifford have created a foundation offering youth the opportunity to discover music. Say Party, performing with the group from 2005 to 2010. Members at that time included Stephen O’Shea, Becky Ninkovic, Derek Adam and Krista Loewen. They toured all over the world, and were popular in Europe in addition to having a Canadian fan-base. Over time, the band’s sound evolved from punk-rock to include more dance-music elements. In 2008, Devon also took a position with the Portland Hotel Society, an organization that provides shelter for Vancouver’s homeless population. He loved the work, and felt like he could make a differ-

ence in the lives of others, his mom says. The rock camps are intended for those who show an interest in learning music, but cannot afford lessons. Abbotsford teachers are helping identify kids in their classes, and the program is still accepting applications. “When people die, sometimes people don’t like to talk about the person because it’s sad. The foundation for us is a way for Devon to live on,” Edna says. For more information on “Rock Camps,” call the Central Abbotsford Community School at 604853-2221.

Parking relief ‘compassion’ CMA Journal calls for parking fee reform Jeff NAGEL Black Press

Lower Mainland hospitals collect $14 million a year in parking fees that critics say amount to unfair user fees that can even harm patient care. The Canadian Medical Association Journal on Monday called for hospital parking fees to be at least waived for all patients, if not abolished entirely. “Parking fees are a barrier to health care and add avoidable stress to patients who have enough to deal with,” Dr. Rajendra Kale, the journal’s interim editor-in-chief, wrote in an editorial. “They can and sometimes do interfere with a clinical consultation, reducing the quality of interaction and therefore of care.” Patients who wait weeks for a consultation at a hospital may

Health authorities don’t get the fines that are paid when hospital visitors stay too long and are ticketed, he said. That money goes to parking lot contractors. But nobody should halt a consultation or other care prematurely over parking, he said, adding any fine resulting from that can be voided. “When there are exceptional circumstances, appointments go long and someone gets a fine, call parking services – they will waive the violation ticket,” Thorpe-Dorward said, adding Fraser gets about 30 requests a day. Use your head B.C. Liberal MLA Moira Stilwell has proposed legislation to help prevent concussions in youth sports. The private member’s bill would make it law to remove a young athlete from play if a concussion is suspected. The proposed Concussions in Youth Sport Safety Act recognizes that the majority of sport-related head injuries occur in athletes younger than 20, and that the frequency of such injuries is increasing. More is unknown than known about concussions. We know what causes them, but not why some people feel some symptoms – headaches, nausea, dizziness, sensitivity to light – while others experience a sudden onset of depression. There’s no clinically tested treatment for concussions. Rest is best. Sidney Crosby just returned to the NHL after 10 months recuperating from a concussion. Other

players have had to retire after sustaining multiple concussions, some the result of deliberate and callous head shots. These are professional athletes; they know the risks they take every time they compete, and what’s at stake – for some, their jobs. But what about our children? So few will ever play pro. They have their whole lives ahead of them. No game, no victory or goal, is worth jeopardizing their futures. As a government, as volunteers, as parents, we need to do everything possible to educate them about brain injuries, to teach them to protect themselves and respect one another, without instilling in them fear. It’s not as simple as telling them to keep their heads up, and elbows down. We must help them value our most valuable asset – our brains. – Black Press

B.C.’s court system close to collapse Tom

Fletcher

B.C. Views One of the last exchanges in the B.C. legislature’s fall session was over the state of the court system. Drug dealers are walking free, NDP leader Adrian Dix reminded Public Safety Minister Shirley Bond in the final question period. Dix referred to a Prince George case this fall where a convicted cocaine dealer racked up more trafficking charges while he was on trial, and then was released because he couldn’t be tried in a timely fashion. The NDP was picking up on an unusually political speech last week by B.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Bauman. Speaking to the annual B.C. judges’ conference in Las Vegas, Bauman warned that funding cuts have the B.C. court system “going over a cliff in slow motion.” The cuts are real. By next year, court service budgets are expected to be down

10 per cent since 2008, and staff down 15 per cent. The provincial court is down 17 judges from 2005. There aren’t enough clerks. And the federal government is about to push through new sentencing guidelines that will add more inmates to B.C.’s overflowing prison system. Bond, the overworked B.C. Liberal minister doing double duty as Attorney General, replied that some of the budget cuts are being reversed. More sheriffs have been trained, and 14 provincial court judges have been hired in the past two years. (Meanwhile, provincial judges are suing the deficit-laden government, demanding a six-per-cent raise.) Bond also pointed to long-term strategies being implemented to relieve the flood of court cases. It’s this kind of systemic change that has the most potential for long-term reform of our archaic system. Right now there are an estimated 2,000 cases in provincial court that are running long enough to risk being dismissed due to delays. It’s not a crime wave; a quarter of all cases in provincial and B.C. Supreme Court are family disputes over kids and property.

The Family Law Act has been in the works for years, and it sailed through the legislature with NDP support. It encourages out-of-court settlements in family breakups, equalizes common-law rules with those for married couples and does away with the terms “custody” and “access” that suggest children are to be fought over as if they are property.

An estimated 2,000 cases in provincial court are running long enough to risk being dismissed due to delays Bond also pointed to B.C.’s harsh new administrative penalties for drinking and driving, which have kept most routine impaired cases out of court. Police have the authority to impound vehicles and impose heavy fines on the spot, when drivers fail a roadside breath test or even blow in the “warn” range of 0.05 to 0.08 per cent. Bond points proudly

to a 40-per-cent decrease in alcoholrelated vehicle deaths in the first year. Of course this is being challenged as an infringement of the right to go to court and try various drunk-driving defences. A judge will soon decide if the hazards of impaired driving justify such an infringement. Justice Bauman acknowledges that courts have to clean up procedures too. Set aside the baseless conspiracy theories around the Dave Basi-Bobby Virk saga, and you have two small-time crooks whose lawyers were allowed to spin the case out for seven years in a tangle of evidence disclosure demands. As the legislature adjourned, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson joined previous mayors, from Conservative Party member Sam Sullivan to Mike Harcourt, in calling for marijuana to be legalized and regulated. Not on my watch, replied Prime Minister Stephen Harper. So instead, we’re getting de facto legalization of crack cocaine. payers with empty pockets. People are careless with other people’s money and politicians are notorious in spending more than they should. Unfortunately, the adopted approach by council to base an increase on the average of 10 comparator districts is simply wrong. It is the typical union mentality where remuneration disregards accomplishment. Even though many political organizations

follow this pattern it is becoming “old school,” and models based on performance are gaining traction. Given Abbotsford’s reputation for accountability and leadership, isn’t it time to choose a different approach where politicians receive compensation according to achievement of their targets? Such an accountability approach keeps them on their toes all of the time and might ameliorate to some

extent MacGregor’s concerns. Simply, if council actually achieves what they publicly set out to accomplish, then they really are serving the community well and actually adding value to the quality of life in this community. The old approach of putting them in their chairs for three years without attaching some type of an accountability mechanism during that time period is no longer

Questions about polling stations

Abbotsford trying to supress voters? Memo to the new mayor and council: I was always against the P3 water plan, and with every brochure, phone call, and page after page of newspaper ads promoting it, I became more angry and resentful that tax dollars (I hear it was $200,000) were used for propaganda endorsing it. I also wasted over an hour of my time listening to a telephone town hall meeting. Time ran out before my questions could be asked, but there were a couple of participants who used the forum to go on at length flattering the mayor but asked no questions, and the so-called moderator just let them go on. At the end I was told that I could ask my questions on voice mail (which I did) and I would receive a phone call answering them. I never heard another word. Carole Harlow

Thanks to the outgoing mayor Thank you, George Peary, for your 24 years of elected public service to Abbotsford. Although most voters did not agree with your views concerning P3 water sourcing, and although you were not re-elected this time, we should not forget the larger picture. I speak from personal observation. During the years I served on city council with you I observed how hard you worked at serving our city. Your diligence and commitment were an inspiration to me. Even when we disagreed, you were always considerate and respectful. To the people of Abbotsford I say this: For more than a decade I followed the persistent efforts and demanding work undertaken by George in his various committee and commission roles, in trying to convince the provincial government to provide funding for a new hospital in Abbotsford. I

firmly believe that no other person on council or in the private sector has done more

than George Peary in helping our city gets its fine, new hospital. We must not forget that

There always seems to be a lot of complaining about low voter turnout after every election. It’s my belief that people should become informed and go to the polls. However, I have to wonder how Abbotsford decides where its citizens should vote. I live in a highly populated area with many houses, condos, apartments and townhouses in the vicinity. Where was my polling station? It was at Upper Sumas Elementary School, miles away from my home, in a sparsely populated area with absolutely no access by public transportation. Perhaps half of the people working there (there were two other voters when I was there) could have been stationed somewhere nearer my home where there is a much larger population base and public transit. There should be more polling stations and voting should be made as easy and convenient as possible for citizens. Or, is the City of

Charged for ATM theft in Chase Man’s vehicle fired at by Abbotsford officer in earlier incident

Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

A man whose vehicle was fired at as he allegedly sped away from an Abbotsford police officer on Nov. 4 has been charged in connection to an ATM theft in Chase, B.C. Christopher Ryan

Trethewey, 34, was charged with eight offences, including theft over $5,000, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and break and enter. Salmon Arm RCMP received a report at about 4:50 p.m. on Tuesday that a man

had backed a trailer into the Village Grocer on Balmoral Road and had tried to steal an automated banking machine. He was interrupted by the business owner, and then fled, leaving behind the ATM in the parking lot.

Shortly after, a call came in that a truck had driven through the doors of a Petro Canada gas station in Chase – about 35 minutes away – and an ATM had been stolen. A witness reported seeing the vehicle drive away, dragging

the machine behind it. The suspect was then located in a nearby gravel pit, attempting to pry open the ATM. Prior to his arrest in Chase, Trethewey was charged in Abbotsford with several offences

– obstructing a police officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property over $5,000, and possession of break-in instruments – in relation to an incident on Nov. 4. On that morning, a suspect was being questioned by a police officer on a property in the 3400 block of Juniper Crescent when he sped away in a pickup truck that did not belong to him. The officer fired his gun, aiming for the tire. A bullet was later found imbedded in the side of a nearby house, and the Abbotsford Police Department is still investigating to confirm whether it was from the single shot fired by the officer.

The man was arrested about 45 minutes later in the area of McKee Road and Cassiar Avenue, driving his own vehicle. The abandoned pickup was found off-road on Eagle Mountain. Trethewey has pleaded guilty to two of the charges – the motor vehicle and stolen property offences – and is scheduled for sentencing on Jan. 19 in Abbotsford. He is currently in custody on the most recent charges and is slated for a bail hearing in Salmon Arm on Dec. 13. Trethewey is also scheduled to go on trial Feb. 23 in Chilliwack for two counts of possession of property obtained by crime.

Impaired deaths down New penalties cited in first real drop in a decade Tom FLETCHER Black Press

B.C.’s tough new impaired driving penalties have helped reduce deaths by 40 per cent in the first year since they came into effect, according to preliminary figures released by the provincial government recently. There were 68 alcohol-related deaths across B.C. in the 12 months that ended Sept. 30, compared with 113 deaths in the previous 12 months. Premier Christy Clark and Public Safety Minister Shirley Bond marked the occasion with a ceremony in front of the legislature, with police officers and Laurel Middelaer, whose four-year-old daughter Alexa was struck and killed by an impaired driver in Delta in 2008. Clark announced a $40,000 contribution to establish “Alexa’s Bus,” a mobile road safety unit that will focus on impaired driving education and enforcement. Clark said the statistics validate a controversial decision by the government to implement Canada’s toughest roadside penalties for blood alcohol readings as low as 0.05 per cent. A blood alcohol reading in the “warn” range between 0.05 and 0.08 per cent can result in a three-day driving ban, a $200 “administrative penalty” and another $250 fee to have a driver’s licence reinstated. Drivers may also have their car impounded for three days and be billed for towing and storage. For roadside readings of 0.08 per cent or higher, police have the option of imposing a 90-day driving ban, a $500 fine and impounding the vehicle for 30 days. That suspension can cost a driver $3,750, including $700 for towing and storage and $1,420 to take a mandatory “responsible driver” course. “For the first time in a decade, we’ve seen a real drop in the deaths associated with impaired driving, and 45 more people made it home safe in the past year as a result,” Bond said.

Last year’s concert was a smaller affair, with Andrea having just given birth to her daughter. Now, Amaris is a mother too – her daughter was born six months ago. It will bring new meaning to some of the lyrics this year, the moms said, especially with songs such as “Mary Did You Know.” “You understand your own mom more, understand

Abbotsford Homeowners Want to Know The Value of Their Home, But Are Afraid to Ask! Abbotsford – A hassle-free service allows homeowners to receive up to date real estate market information speciÀc to their home without having to meet with a real estate agent. Some homeowners are reluctant to meet with a realtor as they may only be in the early stages of planning a move or may not yet know if they will move. “Should we sell or stay? How much equity do we actually have?” Often these questions cannot be answered without knowing the current value of your home. Determining the value of your home is based largely on comparing your home to similar homes that have recently sold. This comparative approach should consider several factors – features of each home, location, neighbourhood, length of time on the market, etc. However, access to this type of information is generally re-

served for the real estate agents and their clients. This free service provides each homeowner with a Real Estate Market Update speciÀc to their property. This update includes detailed sales information of similar homes that have recently sold within the homeowner’s area, as well as the current listings. This data includes a photograph of each home, asking prices and selling prices, the number of days on the market, price reductions and a complete description of each home. To have a free Market Update sent to you, specially tailored for your home, call this 24 hour free recorded message at 1-800-251-4944, enter extension #4811. This hassle free, no obligation service is provided by Rod Poole of Landmark Realty Corp. You may also call Rod’s ofÀce directly at 604-309-6068.

Peewee Falcons flying high Off to B.C. final after beating Kelowna in semis Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News

The Abbotsford peewee black Falcons community football squad scored an upset victory on Saturday to punch their ticket to the provincial championship game. The Falcons were considered underdogs heading to the B.C. semifinal, as their opponent, the Kelowna Bears, had beaten them twice at a preseason tournament in August. But Abbotsford rode a huge fourth quarter to a 34-12 victory. They move on to face North Delta for the B.C. title on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. at Langley’s McLeod

Park. “The kids are so excited to get to this point, and they’ve been saying that this is their Grey Cup,” Falcons head coach Luis Garcia said with a chuckle. “They’ve been working really hard to get where they are.” Against Kelowna, the score was tied 6-6 after three quarters. But the Falcons got a touchdown on the first play of the fourth, and stepped on the gas from there. Samwell Uko (2), Dylan Roach (2) and Tyson Reed scored TDs, while defensive linemen Ebiye Okoko, Addison Kleiber and Tyrel Rolle led the charge defensively.

Eagles bronzed at B.C.’s TIRED OF LOW RETURNS? Dan KINVIG

Abbotsford News

Bronze wasn’t the medal colour the MEI Eagles were necessarily dreaming of, but a podium finish was nevertheless a terrific result at junior boys volleyball provincials. The Eagles, who hosted the tournament last weekend, came in as the No. 2 seed, fresh off a victory over Langley Fundamental in the Fraser Valley title game. The two local rivals clashed again in the B.C. semifinals, and this time it was Langley Fundmental

Lions off to v-ball provincials The Yale Secondary senior boys volleyball team punched its ticket to AAA provincials at the Fraser Valley championship tournament last week. The Lions opened the season by losing their first five games, but turned things around after a five-set defeat to No. 2-ranked Earl Marriott

in late October. Yale then began putting some wins together, and posted a sixthplace finish at the Valleys to earn a B.C. berth. The provincials begin Thursday in Kelowna. The Lions are led by setter Kristof Schlagintweit, outside hitter J.J. Pankratz and middle Abraham Falls.

place game. “We feel good about the bronze,” Eagles coach Brad Knodel said. “If we’d just thrown it away and not played well, it would be been disappointing. “But Langley Fundamental played really well – they served really tough. It’s always better when you lose to a team that’s playing at the top of their game.” Two Eagles were honoured as provincial all-stars – right side Jordan Loewen was on the first team, and setter Jordan Koslowsky was a second-teamer.

T-Wolves fall in semis The Robert Bateman junior football team saw its playoff run come to an end in the provincial semifinals, as they dropped a 41-7 decision to the John Barsby Bulldogs of Nanaimo last Thursday. Austen Zacher scored the lone touchdown for the Timberwolves. Bateman, in just the second year of football at the school, is fast becoming one of B.C.’s top AA programs.

FORSYTH Oran John

Oran John Forsyth of Abbotsford, BC passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at the age of 65 while at the Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission, BC. He is survived by his children Nicole Pattison (Shawn) and Jennifer Taylor (Andy); grandchildren, Connor and Kaitlyn Pattison, Dylan and Jake Taylor; and his sister Mary Moorcroft (Larry). Oran was a very caring man and willing to help anyone who needed it. He worked most of his life at shake and shingle sawmills and enjoyed country music. The family would like to thank the wonderful doctors and staff at the Christine Morrison Hospice.

Following their return to Canada he worked in the insurance business and as town administrator in Dalmeny, Saskatchewan. Clarence and Martha retired to Abbotsford in 1986. It was from Abbotsford that their love of traveling the world continued their meeting with other missionaries, their work with the Gideons, and his playing golf or going bowling.
