When Garrith Michael bought his dream home 18 months ago, he planned to live there for the rest of his life. But the announcement of a proposed quarry on Sumas Mountain has him rethinking his plan. Michael, like several mountain residents, is concerned the proposed quarry could make life unbearable. While the constant noise from blasting and the destruction of the area’s natural beauty are important issues, his primary concern is safety. There are several gravel pits already located on the mountain and Michael said he’s seen three separate incidences where a full gravel truck has forced a minivan off to the side of the road. He has three children of his own and drives them, in a minivan, to Auguston Traditional School. “I know what can happen when a full dump truck hits a minivan,” said Michael, who has been a professional firefighter for more than a decade. The application, by a company called 266531 BC Ltd., to quarry 310 acres on Sumas Mountain could potentially block public access to Sumas Mountain Regional Park and would hamper plans to convert the region to recreational green space. The quarry would be situated about 400 metres from Chadsey Lake and adjacent to the 3,570 acre park, which some residents fear will become inaccessible if the quarry is allowed. If approved by the provincial gov-

A new quarry will mean even more dump trucks traveling along the winding roadway. ernment, the quarry would remove 225,000 metric tonnes of decorative aggregate rock per year for 100 years. Michael isn’t the only person concerned about the idea. Several other residents, the City of Abbotsford, the Fraser Valley Regional District and Metro Vancouver have all objected to the quarry. But it is the residents on the mountain who will be most affected. When he moved from Auguston

to his new home on Liamel Road, Michael knew trucks would be an issue, considering the existing quarries. But he said another quarry project is too much. He has dealt with quarry owners before, expressing his fears and concerns, and found them to be quite open to ideas. “But once the truck leaves the quarry pit, there’s not much they can do, Continued on A6

Dad fights to get his autistic daughter back

INVESTIGATING RCMP CRASH Abbotsford Police will investigate a head-on collision involving a marked Chilliwack RCMP cruiser on Tuesday evening in Agassiz. It crashed with a Ford Mustang with a 20-year-old driver and 19-yearold passenger at Highway 7 and Bodner Road. The Mustang occupants were both airlifted to hospital, the driver in critical condition and the passenger in serious condition. Highway 7 was closed Wednesday morning while APD Major Crime Unit and collision reconstructionists investigated.

Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

An Abbotsford dad said his autistic daughter cried for 18 days straight after she was removed from his care, and he was asked to provide a photo of himself to help calm her down. Derek Hoare, whose story was first reported June 25 in The News, has been fighting to get back his nine-year-old daughter, Ayn Van Dyk, since she was taken by the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) on June 16. Hoare said he was told the ministry was taking Ayn because, as a single father caring for two other children, including a 10-year-old autistic son, he had overwhelming responsibility. The removal came four days after Ayn had disappeared from their home for three hours, resulting in a search by the Abbotsford Police. She turned up safely in a neighbour’s backyard, but Hoare said the incident was used as an example that he could not properly care for her, and that Ayn’s behaviour was “self-endangering.” He appeared at a family court

The next court date, when Hoare will be able to present his case, will not be set until at least September. Hoare said Ayn spent 12 days in hospital after she was taken and is now in a foster home for two to eight weeks while on the

waiting list for a more intensive six-week hospital evaluation. Hoare said a report from her 12-day hospital stay concluded that Ayn showed no evidence of physical abuse or neglect. It also indicated that she had been medicated to sedate her due to her becoming “profoundly dysregulated and aggressive; biting, kicking, scratching and screaming...” Hoare said he is adamantly opposed to medicating his

daughter, and she did not exhibit this behaviour at home, although he acknowledges that she has outbursts in other environments, particularly school. He said he received a call from a social worker last week requesting a photo of him that could be given to Ayn, who was upset and had been crying incessantly. Hoare said he is hesitant to visit her, only to leave her again and cause furContinued on A6

Rash of rural robberies Five incidents all in one day Vikki HOPES Abbotsford

Abbotsford Police might have caught a suspected cat burglar, but now they’re dealing with a series of rural robberies. Five burglaries all took place between 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Monday, said Const. Ian MacDonald. In four cases, the front door was kicked in or pried open. In two of those incidents, a TV, jewelry and cash were stolen. In the other two, the residents are still trying to determine what was taken. In the fifth robbery, the culprit used a ladder to get into the home through an open second-storey window, and stole prescription medication. A bicycle was found abandoned on the property. None of the residences were occupied at the time, indicating that the suspects likely knocked on the door or rang the doorbell first to see if anyone was home, MacDonald said. He said the properties were located in areas where there weren’t a lot of people around and where the homes were at least partially

obscured from view. The thefts took place at the following locations: the 2600 block of Lefeuvre Road, the 4500 block of Sumas Mountain Road, the 35200 block of Page Road, the 4100 block of Bradner Road, and the 2200 block of Mountain Drive. MacDonald said the distance between the properties and their rural locations mean the suspects were likely travelling in a vehicle, rather than on foot. He said, in the robbery on Sumas Mountain Road, a neighbour later reported having seen a suspicious white pickup in the area. MacDonald advised residents to report any suspicious people or vehicles in their areas to the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225. Last week, police reported that a series of cat burglaries had taken place in which the thief entered residences through sliding glass doors while the occupants were sleeping. A suspect, Clayton Brian Kopeck, 18, was charged on Friday with three counts of break-and-enter.

MISSION LAWSUIT The District of Mission confirmed that it has been served with a class-action lawsuit from a group of residents who claim their rights were violated when their properties were searched as suspected marijuana growops. The district’s deputy chief administrative officer, Paul Gipps, confirmed Monday they were served late last week and the documents have been forwarded to the district’s lawyers. “We have 21 days [to respond] as of Friday,” he said, adding he couldn’t comment until it has been reviewed by lawyers. The lawsuit is based on the highly controversial Public Safety Inspection Team (PSIT), a program that started in April 2008 and inspected 499 properties based on electricity usage and RCMP surveillance before being put on indefinite review this January. The lawsuit has the support of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, which has publicly stated the aim is to compensate those hurt by the program and help protect the rights of residents in all municipalities with similar bylaws.

FREE! Irrigation and Landscape Assessments The best way to save water outdoors is to ensure you are irrigating efficiently. Irrigation experts estimate homeowners can reduce outdoor watering needs by 25% just by keeping up with irrigation system maintenance and setting the timer properly. Water-efficient landscapes are also essential to conserving water outdoors and this starts with good soil. Top-dressing your lawn and putting mulch in gardens will help the soil retain moisture. The next step is to carefully select plant material and group plants depending on their water needs, also known as hydrozoning. By converting your yard to a waterwise landscape you can save water, time and money. In July, the Abbotsford Mission Water & Sewer Commission will be offering free assessments to residents with irrigation systems and those using manual sprinklers. This is a one-on-one walk-through of your yard and garden that takes about 45 minutes. An AMWSC staff member will help you identify ways that you can save water. End ICBC monopoly The latest proposal from the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia is another clear indication that the Crown corporation is reaching the end of the road in its ability to properly serve the province’s motorists. ICBC announced this week that it has notified the BC Utilities Commission that it plans to apply for a rate hike. “What’s happened really is the economy has rebounded a lot faster than most people have expected. That’s put more cars on the road.” ICBC spokesman Mark Jan Vrem told the media. He also pointed to an increase in body-injury claims as a result of wet weather. And while most, if not all, businesses would celebrate an economic rebound and additional customers, ICBC apparently sees it as a negative. However, that stance gives rise to a very simple

solution: If ICBC is troubled by an increase in drivers, perhaps the time has come to end the corporation’s monopoly on basic insurance coverage. The latest news comes less than two months after Christy Clark’s Liberal government shot down ICBC’s proposal to increase insurance rates for drivers who receive as little as a single speeding ticket. While those measures seemed excessive, they were imminently more fair than the proposal that will be put before the BCUC. While the corporation has steadily increased rates on atfault drivers, this latest proposed hike will take safe drivers along for the ride. The time has come to see if private companies can provide the service at a better value to the province’s drivers. — Black Press

Guest Shot While collecting taxes to fund society’s services is considered a group responsibility, for the most part we pay based on ability. With income taxes we pay progressively more as our earnings increase, thus the wealthier can afford to pay more. This works reasonably well since it means that those who can least afford to pay for collective services are still entitled to the same standard of living. With consumption taxes, however, we have a more flat tax system, whereby income doesn’t matter; you pay the same amount on products and services as everybody else. Nobody seemed to have a problem with this concept in B.C. until the provincial government decided to

unilaterally harmonize the federal and provincial sales taxes into one valueadded tax. Suddenly, it’s become an attack on the poor and those families who can least afford it, or so you’ve been told by HST opponents. They call the HST a “regressive” tax, a $2 billion tax shift onto the poor and a jobs killer for the services industry. Well, the HST is a regressive tax, as was the PST and GST. Consumption taxes are inherently regressive, as they don’t discriminate on the basis of those who can afford to pay for an item. What this means is that the new car that was taxed at 12 per cent under the PST/GST and is still taxed at 12 per cent under the HST is the same regressive tax system, since it doesn’t charge a lower tax rate based on the relative affordability for the consumer. That’s simple enough. But what has people angry is the fact that some services that were PSTexempt under the old system are now taxed seven per cent higher under the HST. This has been a difficult adjustment

as consumption taxes went from a narrow-based system taxing mainly goods and not services, to a broad-based system where taxes are applied equally. That’s naturally going to take some

Well, the HST is a regressive tax, as was the PST and GST. Consumption taxes are inherently regressive, as they don’t discriminate on the basis of those who can afford to pay for an item. adjustment for an economy like British Columbia where four out of every five workers are employed in a service. But that isn’t a coincidence.

A tax system that artificially favoured services was caused by government, and so the market adapted to that unnatural imbalance in services. And though the change to the HST has been difficult, the benefits are showing. Broad-based consumption taxes curtail inflation, stabilize consumer prices and allow free market forces to work. The input HST tax credits have allowed B.C. businesses to expand, hire more people and recover from the economic downturn. It’s unfortunate that the HST has become a political debate, when it has very little to do with politics beyond the way it was introduced. But don’t take my word for it. Ask any economist, accountant or tax expert. They’ll tell you the HST is a more fair, simple and equitable means of collecting taxes for the high quality services British Columbians demand from their government.

letters HST debate: Still unconvinced Those who are weighing in to the HST/PST/ GST issue will have to make their decision soon. Your paper printed an article by Stockwell Day. It was interesting but he left many questions unanswered. In addition, some of the benefits that Mr. Day brought up seem rather fleeting and perhaps not significant in the long term. Will savings of $120 per year for a family lift that family out of poverty? Not likely. What about extra costs to B.C. residents? Take two examples in which we are personally involved. Both my husband and myself provide a service to the community. Prior to the introduction of HST we were required to charge only GST on this service. Even the new rate of HST that will be introduced is higher than GST alone. Now there is double the tax

cost to the individuals and companies that receive these services. Mr. Day failed to mention how those 24,400 (perhaps he should have said 24,414 jobs) would be created. Should we simply take his word for it? In his letter he has used some terms that seem designed to tug at the heartstrings of the public, referring to children, seniors, lowerincome families and creation of jobs. His lack of information of how these would benefit, other than a cheque here and there, left me unconvinced. I wonder if there are other skeptics out there who read his article. He’ll have to provide more solid reasoning before I believe that we’ll be taking a “giant step backward” by saying no to HST. Marilyn Ibsen

What about church responsibility? Re: Riot showed erosion of morality, July 7, 2011. I enjoyed reading John H. Redekop’s reasonings about the recent Vancouver hockey rioting. To me, however, there seems to be a lot more at stake here. Redekop refers to how that young people assert that “rightness” is determined by “what feels good for me!.” What concerns me a great deal is that many churches themselves preach a “feelgood” philosophy, in that once you become a Christian, “all will go well with thee,” even though my Bible clearly states that every human being is subject to trials and temptations while trotting this globe. I can only wonder just how actively the church presents continual clear-cut answers to their listening audiences on these issues? Some six weeks ago, Craig Bresett, wrote a letter to the paper, searching for truth about the true Love of God in dealing with humanity. Craig presented various bib-

lical examples that he found difficult to understand. They were exactly the same type of questions I asked myself as a teenager until a religious leader asked me to read Job 38-44 in my Bible. My outlook changed. I was never the same after that. What hurts me immensely, though, is the fact that not even one of the approximately 300 religious leaders, plus scores of retired pastors roaming around in Abbotsford, could not even be bothered to take the time to answer this searching soul. A “luke-warm” attitude comes to mind. I totally agree with Redekop’s suggestion that, “The systematic rejection of moral absolutes in education, in the media, and in entertainment has much more to do with malicious riots than do alcohol and notions of anarchism.” I strongly believe, however, that a neglect of vibrant church teachings on moral issues should have been included in this list. Love the sculpture I love the new raspberry artwork installed in the roundabout on Clearbrook Road. Wouldn’t it have been something else if there were solar panels in the raspberries, so they lit up at night. Way to go Abbotsford! Marsha Maddess

Tax hikes adding up I am so tired of seeing the people of Abbotsford taking it on the chin from our city council. In the past three years, with tax hikes and a move from one location to another within Abbotsford, our taxes have increased by close to $600 per year. I ask others to sit with pen and paper to really calculate what is going on. When we sit in silence it is a green light for council to continue outrageous increases and overspending. Come on Abbotsford, let them hear you! Lora Thompson

No fan of sculpture or its expense

My first impression of the tree sculpture with only raspberries, was of the simple singlemindedness of the individual who has created it, and the manager of the city and mayor accepting that it cost us taxpayers 52,000 hard-earned dollars. Surely this city grows many more different kinds of berries, grapes and fruit, which this tree could have displayed. This city needs a new mayor

and city manager, especially after the new sports stadium disaster and an AHL team holding the city ransom for multiple thousands of dollars each year. This stadium was brought about without any taxpayer’s sayso. My youngest child is more money wise than our city leaders are displaying. God help us all. Rick Mueller

Not-for-profit groups can run AESC concessions

Local not-for-profit organizations will have the chance to do some fundraising and spread the word about their organization while volunteering. The Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC) is opening its concession stands to the groups, earning them

approximately eight per cent of the sales made the evening worked. Natasha Kraal of Ovations Food Services, which runs the food and beverage service at the arena, said it’s an easy way to get the community involved. “It also helps with profits and

provides the younger members with work experience,” she said. The organizations can spread the word of what their group does by bringing their own banners, logos, promotional hats and flyers. An information session was

held on Tuesday evening at the AESC, inviting groups to register for the service and to explain the details. Orientation for the volunteers will take place in August. The first events to be worked will include the concerts in September, followed soon after

by hockey season. Volunteer contracts last one year. An application form is available online at www.abbotsfordcentre.ca. For more information contact Kraal at nkraal@abbotsfordcentre.ca or 604-743-5016.

Already, UFV is nearly full for the fall semester. Students wanting to take open studies have a deadline of July 20 to submit their applications. Last year was the first time the burgeoning university had to impose such a deadline, and it was 10 days later, at the end of July. The deadline had to be moved up this year, because applications are up three per cent. What’s more, the university has announced it will operate at 105 per cent of its governmentset target for admissions. Last year it ran at approximately 103 to 104 per cent. Last fall the university enrolled approximately 16,000 students, which makes it larger than about half of the universi-

a commitment to its students. Many other universities struggle to fill their classrooms. “In fact, we’ve exceeded our FTE (full-time equivalents) for over 10 years,” he said. Davis said admitting students beyond gover nment-funded capacity is not a sound long-term strategy, but added that if UFV didn’t overfill “we would have to turn away so many students, and dissatisfy so many people in the Fraser Valley...” UFV gets admission pressure from population growth and the institution’s improving reputation. What’s more, post-secondary participation rates in the Fraser Valley have historically been low, so there is also room for growth in the percentage of the population which sees more schooling as beneficial. The admissions closure does not include adult basic education or English as a Second Language programs, vocational, or trades programs. Also, a limited selection of certificates, diplomas and degrees will continue to accept applications beyond July 20. Some seats are still available in select programs and courses, such as Agriculture, Modern Languages, Theatre, Fashion Design, and Aboriginal Culture and Language Support. Students willing to take courses at the Mission and Chilliwack campuses will find more spaces in courses available than there are at the Abbotsford campus.

Abbotsford Homeowners Want to Know The Value of Their Home, But Are Afraid to Ask! Abbotsford – A hassle-free service allows homeowners to receive up to date real estate market information speciĂ€c to their home without having to meet with a real estate agent. Some homeowners are reluctant to meet with a realtor as they may only be in the early stages of planning a move or may not yet know if they will move. “Should we sell or stay? The second annual Western Canadian Flag Football Championships kicks off at Exhibition Park this weekend. The event, which runs this Saturday and Sunday, has expanded in scope for Year 2. The tournament field has grown from six to nine teams, and switching venues from DeLair Park to Exhibition Park also allows for more elbow room, organizer Scott Beadell pointed out. “Last year’s event went really well, and we’re excited about the growth,” Beadell said.

ith the Canadian loonie continuing to dominate the U.S. dollar, the lineups at the Abbotsford-Huntingdon border crossings continue to grow as bargain-seeking Canadians take their shopping dollars south. Local businesses are feeling a renewed pinch of revenue heading south. And it is always a concern for business owners when money escapes from their local economic zone. But with U.S. products often considered to be cheaper, it’s getting harder to keep customers shopping locally. Compounding the problem is the fact that

customer loyalty is considered an outdated concept, and many Canadian consumers now think only of their own wallet. But consumers should remember that businesses help build their communities. Local businesses reinvest in their community, through sponsorships and charitable donations. They also employ local people, allowing them to pay their mortgages and enjoy the community. But for business to be successful, they need the community to support them back. Shopping locally is the best way to keep your money working in your community.

Heat play-by-play voice departs Dan KINVIG

Abbotsford News

The Abbotsford Heat have lost their voice. Dave Sheldon, the local AHL club’s director of communications and broadcast, departed the organization on Tuesday for a job at CKNW radio. Sheldon is best known as the Heat’s play-by-play man. “I wasn’t looking to leave, but there are opportunities that arise in this business,” Sheldon said. “I enjoyed what I was doing with the Heat, and I really enjoyed building some-

thing from the ground up. “CKNW, for years in this market, has been the flag-bearer for news and sports in this market. When someone like that gives you some interest, you’d better listen to what they have to say.” S h e l d o n joined the Heat SHELDON in 2009, prior to their inaugural season. Previous to that, he worked for the Western Hockey League’s

Everett Silvertips, Chilliwack Bruins and Vancouver Giants. Among other duties at CKNW, Sheldon will host Sportstalk on the weekends (9 p.m. to midnight). On his way out, Sheldon thanked Abbotsford hockey fans for being so generous to him during his time with the Heat. “This will probably help the Heat in some ways, in the sense that they know they have someone in Vancouver who has their back and is going to give them some coverage,” he said.

Team B.C. falls in semifinals

Q Abbotsford athletes are leading the charge for B.C.'s under-18 football team at the Football Canada Cup in Lethbridge, Alta. The B.C. squad opened the tournament with an 18-0 victory over Manitoba on Saturday. B.C. took a slim 1-0 lead into halftime, but the offence came to life in the second half, posting 17 points to put the finishing touches on the win. W.J. Mouat linebacker Jake Heathcote was named B.C.'s defensive player of the game,

Sports in Brief

while his Hawks teammate Nathan Henczel had an interception late in the fourth quarter. In the semifinals on Tuesday, B.C. dropped a 31-15 decision to Quebec. They face Ontario West in the bronze medal game on Friday. The B.C. squad features six Abbotsford athletes – Mouat's Heathcote, Henczel, Deion Bain and Dairien Silva, Robert

Bateman's Kent Hicks, and Dallas Yassinsky of the Abbotsford Collegiate Panthers. Q The Valley Rebels senior men's lacrosse team was knocked off its first-place perch following a week in which they lost two of three games. The Rebels dropped a pair of games to the TriCity Bandits, by scores of 9-7 on Monday and 13-12 on Friday. They bounced back with a

12-6 road win over the Royal City Capitals on Sunday. Curt Callard led the offence with five goals and three assists, while Bryan Poole had a sevenpoint night (two goals, five assists). The Rebels (9-3-1) now trail the Ladner Pioneers (11-2) in the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association standings. They wrap up the regular season on Friday on the road against the North Shore Indians, and can lock up second place with a victory.

For three consecutive months, the percentage of properties sold in the Fraser Valley compared to those that were available for purchase has remained at 16 per cent, reflecting a balanced market starting to favour buyers. In June, the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board processed 1,588 property sales on its Multiple Listing Service (MLS), while at the same time had 9,758 active listings available. Sukh Sidhu, president of the Board, explains, “When supply and demand remain as consistent as they have since April, it indicates a stable market.” “However, it is important for both buyers and sellers to be aware that Fraser Valley’s market is highly localized. “In general, 16 out of every 100 properties sold in June, but that’s referring to every property type in all six of our communities. I coordinate schedules with my wife, an RN, and balance my satisfying and rewarding real estate career with raising our three school-aged daughters and enjoying involvement in our church. I am honoured that so many individuals and families have included me in their busy lives and chosen me to guide them through the intricate process of buying or selling properties.

Being born and raised in Abbotsford has given me an extensive knowledge of the many advantages of living here. I have knowledge of the building process being the daughter of a local builder. My husband, Marty and I own several businesses in Abbotsford so I know the importance of hard work, great customer service, and community involvement. I have a love for renovating and decorating.

Born and raised in Surrey, I moved to Abbotsford in 1985 and grew to love the community. My roots and commitments in the Fraser Valley became even stronger when I married Ingrid and we started a family. With over 20 years experience in sales and marketing, my next challenge was entering real estate. This career plunge, now several years ago, has brought me growth, relationships, and the career satisfaction of a job well done beyond my dreams. My relationships with my clients are of the utmost importance to me. I am committed to providing the care, understanding, service, and attention they deserve. Accountability, availability, opportunity, and results for my clients are the core of my business.

With interest rates remaining stable, there are some excellent opportunities for first-time buyers this summer.” In June, the benchmark price for Fraser Valley detached homes was $528,060, an increase of 1.9 per cent compared to $518,355 in June 2010 and a decrease of 0.3 per cent compared to May. The benchmark price of Fraser Valley townhomes in June was $327,457, a decrease of 0.2 per cent compared to $328,080 in June 2010 and up 0.8 per cent compared to May. The benchmark price of apartments was $249,537 in June, an increase of 1.3 per cent compared to the $246,351 price in June of last year and down 0.6 per cent compared to May.

Although my family is from Alberta, I’ve had the good fortune of spending my school years in this beautiful valley. From my elementary years in Harrison Hot Springs, graduation at Agassiz Secondary, or studying at Abbotsford’s UFV and Vancouver’s UBC, I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else!

When I am not spending time working on my real estate career, I enjoy the many opportunities in my area. I am giving back to my community through my third year of Sparks (the youngest Girl Guides) as a leader and current PR representative.

I am a self-confessed “car guy” and have been racing, restoring, and appreciating all kinds of vehicles since the day I brought home my driver’s license. Over the years I noticed how difficult it can be to find the right property for “toys”, from cars to boats to recreational vehicles. I decided to dedicate part of my business to specializing in “Real Estate for Car Guys” and everyone looking for unique properties, garages and shops in the Fraser Valley.

If you are looking at investing in your first home, expanding your living space or downsizing, now is the time to do it! Let me help you make the best decision about your most important investment.

Much of her volunteerism involved union activities as a founding member of CUPE Local 1267, member of the Fraser Valley District Council, member of the Welton Towers Housing committee, member of the Pleasant View Housing Society and the Mission Hospital Auxiliary. Lola was predeceased by her parents, Sven and Mary Reeves and her infant son Gerald.
