ateful words gradually became hurtful blows. She endured weeks of it before summoning the strength to walk out the door and turn to the police, transition houses and courts for help. Punjabi-speaking counsellors and police officers were supportive, and she prayed for a quick resolution, knowing she would face enormous pressure from her husband’s family not to shame their son. But months later, after numerous court adjournments, frustration and tears – but no trial – she gave up. She went back to her abusive spouse. Sad stories such as this are becoming more common in B.C.’s congested justice system. Spousal assault cases are high priority and aren’t at risk of being thrown out due to excessive delays like many impaired driving cases and some other criminal prosecutions. But advocates say the time to get to trial is getting longer. And the wait can spawn tragic consequences. “When it’s delayed for a long time, normally we lose our victims,” Surrey A Black Press special Women’s Centre proseries investigating the gram manager Maryan congestion and delays in Majedi said. “They go B.C.’s legal system. This back to their husbands. They week: VICTIMS IN LIMBO get repeatedly assaulted. It’s like a revolving door.” Domestic abuse cases are supposed to move through the courts within three months. But in some other B.C. centres, that time period often stretches to four or six months. And Majedi notes that’s after time has elapsed for the police to investigate and prosecutors to approve and lay charges – often bringing the wait for a trial to a year following the assault. Court delays are particularly difficult for South Asian women, said Manbeen Saini, a community-based victim services worker in Surrey. “The family is wanting her to drop charges, not even understanding that she can’t do that,” Saini said, ex-

CORRECT YOUR Lose Weight for Life!
Matthew Heenan was crossing a downtown Kelowna street with friends after leaving a nightclub Nov. 22, 2009 when he was mowed down by a drunk driver. The 23-year-old Coldstream, B.C. resident was pronounced dead just over an hour later. The driver was charged last August with impaired driving causing death and causing an accident resulting in death. Matthew’s parents, Mike and Jo Heenan, have now been told a preliminary inquiry won’t happen until March of 2012. They’re fearful the case against their son’s accused killer will be thrown out on grounds of the unreasonable delay in getting to trial.
Even if the trial proceeds by fall of 2012, that will be more than two years since charges were laid – deep in the danger zone where judges can be compelled to agree the wait has violated the rights of the accused. “We are desperate,” Mike Heenan said. They have appealed directly to B.C.’s Attorney General to proceed by direct indictment, eliminating the need for a preliminary inquiry – an unusual step that would normally have to be initiated by Crown prosecutors. So far, the accused 49-year-old West Kelowna man has spent one day in jail and had a 90-day driving Continued on A7

Brick plant closes
Clayburn helped build Abbotsford Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News
Clayburn Industries Ltd. will be permanently closing its Abbotsford manufacturing plant as of July 29. The closure will eliminate 20 positions and put an end to a historic connection with the city. Clayburn has operated the brick plant on the Pine Street site since 1949 and in several other locations before that. It originated in 1905 in Clayburn Village, B.C.’s first company town. “The Clayburn name is not gone,” said David Lane, president and CEO of Clayburn Industries. “It’s just the manufacturing plant that is closing.” While the bricks will no longer be made locally, the Clayburn Group will continue to operate manufacturing plants in the U.S., China and India. The group will remain in Abbotsford for the foreseeable future, as its head office, administration and financial operations are here. The decision to close the brick plant was made after the company experienced years of deteriorating market conditions for the products made at this location. Lane, who has been with the company since 1992, said there are no plans to end Clayburn’s other business ventures in Abbotsford, including Sumas Shale Ltd., a joint venture between Clayburn Industries

While it will no longer mine fireclay, it continues to remove shale and sandstone materials to make cement. The B.C. division of Clayburn Refractories Ltd., will still be run out of the Abbotsford office as well. As for the employees affected, Lane said the jobs may be phased out gradually.
“July 29 is the date we can best predict today, but there is some flexibility, depending on customer needs,” said Lane. When the manufacturing plant closes, it will end a brick-making tradition that goes back to 1905. Abbotsford’s Bud Cairns started working in the plant in 1946, following in his dad’s Continued on A6

The discovery of high-grade clay throughout Sumas Mountain and the demand for bricks brought Clayburn Village into being. The village and brick plant were built in 1905 by Charles Maclure, son of John Maclure, a former Royal Engineer and a B.C. pioneer. Well ahead of its time as an employer, the company provided water, power, sewers and storm drains. It sponsored a golf club, theatre group, sports teams, and a company doctor – at a time when Abbotsford residents sometimes had to go to Chilliwack, Mission, Langley or even Sumas, Washington for medical assistance. After operating for a quarter century, the brick plant was dismantled in 1931. Scaled-back operations were moved to the sister “Kilgard” site located further up Sumas Mountain. In 1949, a devastating fire ravaged the plant. It was immediately rebuilt and was operational by 1950. The same year the company constructed a new state-of-the-art plant in the Village of Abbotsford. In 1968, the Kilgard plant was sold and the Abbotsford plant was purchased by a U.S. com-

In 1974, company employees bought the Abbotsford plant and formed two companies: Clayburn Industries Limited and Canadian Refractories Limited. The Sumas First Nations band took over the Kilgard plant and commenced business as Sumas Clay Products Limited. While only the foundations of the Clayburn plant now remain in the village, half of the original homes, a store, the church and the schoolhouse – all made of red brick produced by the plant – have survived. Located at the foot of Sumas Mountain, the village was designated for conservation as a heritage site in 1996. Most prestigious of the remaining buildings are the Clayburn church, built in 1912, and the Clayburn schoolhouse, built in 1907, both of which are on the register of Canada’s historic sites. The general store was also built in 1907. – with files from The Reach

Pushed to the polls While 2011 is shaping up as the year of marathon voting for B.C. residents, few wanted to elect a new federal Parliament this year. However, the continual conflicts and tensions caused by seven years of minority governments in Ottawa mean that an election is always a possibility. This latest one was precipitated by what appears to most nonpoliticians to be relatively minor policy differences. Despite the Liberal and NDP campaign bluster, Canada’s government was functioning in stable fashion, and for the great majority of citizens, the so-called transgressions of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservatives hardly been registering on the radar, if at all. Why the Liberals see this as a good opportunity to try to seize power now is somewhat unclear, yet
that is why the country is headed for another unwanted federal election – at a cost of $300 million plus. Perhaps those facts will push voters to the polls. In the 2009 provincial campaign, just over 50 per cent voted. Provincial and federal elections are going the way of municipal elections, where few participate and most simply ignore them altogether. From now until May 2, it will be up to the political parties and local candidates to try and stimulate enough interest so that people show up at the polling booths. Whether they approve of an election or not, those who are eligible should take the time to vote. Voting may seem dull, but democracy is a precious thing. Voting in a free and fair election is something that people in many parts of the world would love to have a chance to do.
That ’70s political show, again Tom
Fletcher
B.C. Views As the federal Parliament slid once again into partisan mayhem, former finance minister John Manley was on CBC television, making me wish he would bring his voice of reason back to Ottawa. Liberal and NDP supporters had been taking turns with accusations that the Conservatives’ corporate tax cuts only help the rich. “That’s stuff that we used to hear in the ’70s,” Manley said. “I thought that people had grown away from that.” He then patiently explained that the key holdings most in peoples’ retirement plans are bank, petroleum and other blue-chip stocks. His Liberal government’s strategy of competing for business investment in a global economy has wisely been continued under Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Yet much of our political discourse at
all levels of government still imagines class warfare between tycoons in silk top hats and a ragged, powerless peasantry. For B.C. voters, 2011 is shaping up as the most politically empowered year ever. The May 2 federal election now gets in line with a by-election for Premier Christy Clark, a referendum on the harmonized sales tax, municipal elections in November and potentially, an early provincial election as well. Will all these contests raise the level of debate? So far it doesn’t look good. This fourth federal election in seven years could have had one benefit. But Clark did not see fit to abandon the harebrained scheme to rush through the HST referendum in June, and now the B.C. government risks losing the tax argument amid all the noise. If the HST vote had been left to September, more people might come to appreciate that taxes on business investment and income are going out of style. An Angus Reid poll came out last week finding that one-third of B.C. residents would now vote to keep the HST, compared to 54 per cent who would take B.C. back to the 1970s. Another contest being overshadowed
is the B.C. NDP leadership, and that’s a ’70s show as well. Raising the minimum wage to $10.25 isn’t good enough. Candidate Nicholas Simons tried to raise his profile by suggesting that it should be hiked 50 per cent, to $12. Heck, why not raise it to $20? If you’re stuck in the ’70s and can’t comprehend the downside of state-imposed prosper-
Much of our political discourse at all levels still imagines class warfare ity, why not just make poverty history? Federal NDP leader Jack Layton informed an anxious nation that he wouldn’t support the Conservative budget because it doesn’t “lift all seniors out of poverty” or “create” enough doctors so everyone can have one. Cuba has “created” plenty of doctors. Mind you, they get paid $25 a month in
addition to their food ration cards, so perhaps that socialist Utopia should raise its minimum wage. I watched another ’70s show last week, attending the B.C. Teachers’ Federation convention at the Victoria Conference Centre. Before Education Minister George Abbott arrived, delegates passed a typically self-righteous resolution demanding all levels of government immediately get rid of poverty. How? Create poverty reduction plans with measurable goals. Right, kind of like those five-year plans for tractor production the Soviet Union had back in the ’70s. Once Abbott arrived to hold out the olive branch, the BCTF’s usual demands resumed. More teachers, more support staff and raises of 10 per cent or more. Does anyone on the BCTF executive know how to synthesize information? Can’t they see a connection between the big raises and staff increases they demand and what’s available for other programs? There’s a clue to our stagnant political debate. It’s largely formed in public schools. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

letters Council chose local force
Re: Chamber calls municipal police funding unfair How interesting that Abby council now finds the funding formula for policing to be “unfair.” Cast your minds back 20 years or so to when the city and the District of Matsqui amalgamated – remember that there was a choice at that time as to keeping the RCMP or Matsqui Police? The so-called wisdom of the day was to forget the RCMP who had patrolled the district for many years, and to keep “our own” police force, renaming the Matsqui Police to Abbotsford
i OPEN NG April 1st
Police. Everyone seemed happy enough with that decision. Wasn’t Mayor George Peary on council then, or am I mistaken? Now that Abbotsford has become the “crime capital” of just about the world, our council suddenly sees the error of its ways, and wants to not only have its cake, but eat it too! There are still many long memories out there, and as is often said, “Hindsight is 20/20 vision!” Iris Todd-Lewis
P3 projects cost taxpayers A publicly elected council or government has no right to use taxpayers’ money to promote private business to run a public service for profit. Obviously, the business partner knows that for the coming decades a profit is guaranteed, and since they are given the privilege to run the facility, they can also increase the rates at any time. We all need water in our
homes. The grant from the federal government gives taxpayers’ money to the private sector. That is exactly what the provincial government has been doing – to privatizing public services and creating opportunities for the private sector to rake in the profits from the ratepayers. Accounts are kept secret in order to protect the “deal” which has been struck.
BC Hydro is one the many examples. Hydro is forced to buy power from private producers at double the cost and recuperate the loss from consumers. We have a government elected by the people and we must hold them responsible to act in our best interest, and not in the interest of a favoured minority whose only goal is profits on the back of the working people. Putting P tti you and d your pets t firstt At Oly’s, customer service is measured by wagging tails and soft purring. That’s because their main concern is your pet’s happiness. They’ve gained the trust of Chilliwack customers over the past two years, and now are about to expand into Abbotsford. Their new 5,000 square foot store will offer the same friendly, knowledgeable owners and staff, and provide the current retail trends pet owners are looking for, including small animal and fish supplies. “We have all brands of foods covered from value to holistic. Our buying power is excellent and our consumers will see it in our great prices,” says Kirk Olischefski. He owns both stores with his wife Tracy Olischefski, and Ken and Phyllis Enns. He says they’re proud to continue partnering with the SPCA’s kitten adoption program. The stores adopt out kittens on behalf of the SPCA, and all proceeds go back to the non-profit society.

Michael Luzia of Abbotsford returned home from Japan only a few days ago, but he has already begun his efforts to help the devastated nation. Luzia shared his experience of surviving the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and tsunami with a school in Langley on Wednesday. He has also begun contacting other schools that have Japanese language programs. He also wants to connect with Rick Hansen Secondary, from which he graduated in 2002. Luzia said, by sharing his story, he hopes to motivate fundraising and increase awareness about the impact the disaster has had on Japan. Specifically, he wants to set up a fund to help people in his Japanese hometown of Onagawa, a small fishing village in northeast Japan that was destroyed by the tsunami on March 10. More than half of the village's population of about 10,000 is believed to have perished. "What I really want is to help kids," he said, adding that many children were orphaned in the disaster. Luzia lost his apartment – and everything in it – but was not at home when the earthquake and tsunami struck. He was on the nearby island of Izushima, teaching at a small school that was on high land and was spared any damage. His students, most of whom lost their parents, have been housed at the school ever since because there is nowhere else for them to go, Luzia said. He arrived back in Canada last Thursday, and is now staying with his family in the Bradner

Michael Luzia taught English in Japan, and witnessed the destruction of the earthquake and tsunami. area of Abbotsford. He said it has been a difficult adjustment. "I'm happy to see my family, but I was walking around the supermarket today, and it felt surreal. There was so much food on the shelves," he said. Luzia recommended that people interested in supporting his efforts donate to the Japanese Red Cross, until he is able to set up a local fund.

Bryce carries Green banner Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News
Daniel Bryce, who carried the Green Party banner in Abbotsford South in the last provincial election, is making his first foray into national politics with the federal Greens in the Abbotsford riding. “I’m really passionate about the community, and I want to see change,” said Bryce. The 29-year-old postal worker was born and raised in Abbotsford, and is a graduate of W.J. Mouat and UFV, where he earned an undergraduate degree in community planning. His main issue in this election is getting more people to the polls. “Voter apathy is a huge thing, especially with young people. We need to give them a reason to vote,” he said. Bryce is the secretary of the Atangard

Bryce said he is more prepared for the campaign this time, and has a better online presence. “I’m certain the Conservatives are going to win (in Abbotsford), but that’s not why I run,” he said. “I want to get people to think. I want people to vote. If they don’t have someone who represents their ideas, they’re not going to vote.” Bryce is also hoping to see the Green Party break through, and win at least one seat in the House of Commons.

Chamber to host candidates The Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce will host an all-candidates meeting for federal election candidates in the riding. The event is set for April 28, 7 p.m. at Garden Park Towers. Canadians go to the polls on May 2. The event will have the same format as in past years, and a panel will present questions to the candidates. Prior to the event, the party representatives are given between 20 and 30 different questions to prepare for, then are asked some of them at random – the questions pulled out of a hat. Each candidate is given a limited number of rebuttal cards, and if they would like to counter the statement of a different party member, they can play their card and be entitled to speak. “That creates the sense of a debate, without there being a full-on debate,” said Chamber manager David D. Hull. There will be an opportunity for members of the public to pose questions to the candidates.

Pharmacies targeted Abbotsford Police are trying to determine whether there are any links between a robbery and an attempted robbery that occurred within two hours of each other at separate pharmacies last Friday. Const. Ian MacDonald said the first took place at 12:50 p.m., when a Caucasian man with his face covered entered a pharmacy in the 30400 block of Blueridge Drive and demanded cash and drugs. He arrived and left the scene in a darkcoloured sedan believed to be a Toyota or a Honda. He is described as having a medium build and wearing a brown-and-beige longsleeved shirt with the letters “E” and “D” on the front. He was also wearing dark pants and shoes, and a black toque. About two hours later, two Caucasian men were seen by a customer as they were preparing to commit a robbery in the 2800 block of Clearbrook Road, MacDonald said. The witness said the men were toting a duffle bag that might have contained a gun, and called 911. The culprits left before confronting any pharmacy staff. One suspect was wearing dark clothing and a toque, and the other had a white T-shirt, blue jeans, a mask and gloves. Anyone with information is asked to call Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

UFV student wins at Montreal Fashion Week
A University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) student has been turning heads on the runway. Fashion design student Sabrina Breitenmoser was recently named one of the top five designers at Canada’s Breakthrough Designers competition in Montreal. The two-day contest, hosted by Télio, a leading textile company based in Quebec, recognized the best fashion design students from across the country. Sketches were submitted by 21 Canadian schools, narrowed down to 25 finalists who competed for five scholarships totalling $10,000. The challenge was to create an original design for a high-end retail company with a maximum of six metres of fabric. The garment was to match this year’s theme, the Great Canadian North. Breitenmoser’s piece was called Warming the Igloos, which focused on the Inuit culture. It was a strapless dress with a quilted igloostyle skirt, accompanied by a

Using “matte cool greys” and “padded, quilted treatments,” she won the creative use of fabric category and a $1,000 scholarship that she will use to further her education. “Being in Montreal for Fashion Week was an amazing, yet surreal experience,” said Breitenmoser. During the two-day contest, Breitenmoser met with indus-

Abbotsford – A hassle-free service allows homeowners to receive up to date real estate market information speciÀc to their home without having to meet with a real estate agent. Some homeowners are reluctant to meet with a realtor as they may only be in the early stages of planning a move or may not yet know if they will move. “Should we sell or stay? How much equity do we actually have?” Often these questions cannot be answered without knowing the current value of your home. Determining the value of your home is based largely on comparing your home to similar homes that have recently sold. This comparative approach should consider several factors – features of each home, location, neighbourhood, length of time on the market, etc. However, access to this type of information is generally re-
served for the real estate agents and their clients. This free service provides each homeowner with a Real Estate Market Update speciÀc to their property. This update includes detailed sales information of similar homes that have recently sold within the homeowner’s area, as well as the current listings. This data includes a photograph of each home, asking prices and selling prices, the number of days on the market, price reductions and a complete description of each home. To have a free Market Update sent to you, specially tailored for your home, call this 24 hour free recorded message at 1-800-251-4944, enter extension #4811. GALA EVENT Attention:
Barry O’Neill, CUPE BC President Darlene Smith, CUPE Regional Vice-President Fraser Valley Region
Dear Mr. O’Neill and Mrs. Smith: RE: Privatization of Mission and Abbotsford’s Drinking Water It has recently come to our attention that your organization is circulating misleading and factually inaccurate information regarding the Stave Lake Water Supply and Development Project proposal being considered by Mission and Abbotsford Councils on April 4, 2011. It is our intention to publish this letter as an open letter to you and your organization in the newspapers. At no time has or will the District of Mission or the City of Abbotsford consider a proposal to privatize our water. The Councils are considering a proposal from the Abbotsford Mission Water Sewer Commission (AMWSC) for the Stave Lake Water Supply and Development Project to be delivered as a design-build-finance-operate (DBFO) public-privatepartnership. In this situation, the District of Mission and the City of Abbotsford will always retain ownership over the water, the plant and all of the assets involved in delivering water to Abbotsford and Mission. The Stave Lake Supply will augment the three other AMWSC water sources through an availability contract. The private contractor will be required to make water available to the AMWSC system when required by the AMWSC certified operators, who are also CUPE members. Through a strict Request for Qualifications and Request for Proposal process, only the design of the treatment plant, the financing for the project, the building of the facilities and the operation and maintenance of the plant would be available as opportunities for private business partners. The AMWSC will closely oversee the operations of the new plant, as well as set the standards for water quality that must be adhered to by the private operator ensuring stringent accountability for each deliverable so that high-quality standards are ensured throughout the life of the contract. The AMWSC will, on a weekly basis, inspect the plant to ensure compliance with all applicable operating standards. The Stave Lake water source is an additional water source for both communities that will supplement our existing water supply, and it will be treated for the sole purpose and use of the residents of Abbotsford and Mission, as directed by the AMWSC. The AMWSC will always retain ultimate control over the water and the water system as it currently does. We strongly encourage you to educate your members and invite you to meet with us at any time to ask any questions you or your membership may have regarding this project. Yours s truly,
George ge W. Peary Mayor c

Locally created TV series premiers on Score Network

THREE GREAT TRIBUTES!
The Beatles, Rod Stewart, Elton John
SATURDAY, APRIL 2 • 8 PM
The new reality TV series Gotta Grudge?, produced by local filmmaker Trevor McWhinney, is set to launch across Canada this week on the Score Network and Score HD. The show is about regular people with big grudges who get the chance to duke it out in the ring in three, one-minute rounds. “If you like drama, if you like Wipeout, if you like boxing, if you like Jerry Springer – it has a bit of everything,” said McWhinney.
What started as a concept and a pilot nearly three years ago is now being represented worldwide, has spurred talks with several US networks. Much of the first season’s filming was done locally. The last event took place in July at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre in front of 1,600 people. Since premiering on the Fight Network earlier this season, the program is one of the top rated shows. It premiers today on the
Score Network and Score HD at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. It will air again on the networks tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday at 2 p.m. The show is currently running on the Fight Network on Wednesdays at 5 p.m., Thursdays at 12 a.m. and Thursdays at 2 p.m. All times are PST. Pre-production for the next season is already underway. To sign up for the show and for more information, visit www.igottagrudge.com.

UFV Cascades head coach Barnaby Craddock believes Yale Lions standout Jordan Blackman will be a “next-generation star” for his program.

Prized hoops recruit Blackman chooses hometown Cascades Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
Sometimes, one play is all it takes to send a high school athlete's stock into the stratosphere. Consider the case of Yale Secondary basketball star Jordan Blackman. Playing for B.C.'s under-17 team at the national championships in Winnipeg last summer, he used a game against Ontario as a launching pad – both literally and figuratively – for his postsecondary career. Recalling the moment still brings a smile to Blackman's face. "One of our guards stole the

ball, and he passed it ahead to me," he recounted. "There was just one guy back. I was dribbling down the left side, and he tried to cut me off right at the basket. But I was already in the air, and it was too late. I just went (and dunked) right over top of him." The huge throwdown sent the crowd into hysterics, and simultaneously expanded Blackman's recruiting options from local to national. B.C. coaches were already well aware of the 6'5" shooting guard, whose skill set blends explosive athleticism with a smooth stroke from beyond the arc. Suddenly, university
coaches from across Canada were courting the Abbotsford hoopster. "He definitely made a name for himself at that tournament," said University of the Fraser Valley head coach Barnaby Craddock, who coached Blackman on the provincial U17 team. "It was remarkable. (The dunk) was one of those plays where I knew he'd be recruited by schools across the country." Blackman weighed offers from programs in B.C. (Trinity Western, SFU, UVic) and Ontario (Toronto, Western Ontario), among others, and also considered spending a
year at prep school in North Carolina with an eye on earning an NCAA scholarship. Ultimately, Craddock was able to convince the versatile 18-yearold to stay close to home, and Blackman committed this week to join the Cascades. "Trinity was my No. 1 for a really long time, but the style of offence that UFV plays is freer," Blackman explained. "It kind of resembles how we play at Yale, and I think it's a better fit." Current UFV star Joel Friesen is a player Blackman is commonly compared to, both in terms of skill set and career path. Both honed their games Continued on A21
The Hamilton Bulldogs dealt the Abbotsford Heat’s playoff hopes a huge blow on Tuesday, winning 3-1 at Hamilton’s Copps Coliseum. The Heat’s third consecutive loss followed a familiar script. Over two weekend games against the Manitoba Moose and Tuesday’s date with Hamilton, Jim Playfair’s bunch has out-shot its opponent by an average of 18.7 shots per game. But the high volume has not yielded results, as the Heat have scored just four goals over that span. Aaron Palushaj and Nigel Dawes each notched a goal and an asRHEAULT sist for Hamilton on Tuesday, while Drew MacIntyre made 37 saves. Jon Rheault, on a five-on-three power play in the second period, mustered the lone goal for the Heat, who out-shot Hamilton 38-24. Abbotsford (34-28-4-6, 78 points) remains mired in sixth place in the AHL’s North Division. With eight games left in the regular season, they’re seven points behind Hamilton for the division’s third and final guaranteed post-season spot (the West Division’s fifth-place finisher could cross over and claim the fourth playoff berth in the North). The Heat have three games remaining against the Bulldogs this season, including a rematch at Copps Coliseum on Wednesday. That result was unavailable at press time. The Abbotsford club returns home this weekend for a Friday-Saturday set with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Figure skate club turns 40 Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
When the Abbotsford Skating Club hits the ice at MSA Arena on Saturday to celebrate its 40th anniversary, it will truly be a family affair. Lynne Wright’s clan is just one of several local families who can boast three generations of involvement with the local figure skating association. Wright, a longtime volunteer with the club, currently serves as vice president. Her daughter Stacy Geddes skated with the club during her younger years and is now a coach. Granddaughters Megan, 12, and Taralyn, 10, will be participating in the 40th anniversary ice show, entitled “Skating Four Decades: Tracing Our Stories.” The show runs at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday at MSA Arena. “I love to see them involved, because I saw what it did for Stacy,” Wright said. “It’s not just the physical exercise – it’s the self-discipline to be able to accomplish things you feel good about. “When you see their faces the day they come home from passing a test or after they first land a certain jump, it’s just an

She won the junior national title in 1981 (with Patrick Mandley) and the senior national crown in 1991 (with Martin Smith), and represented Canada at three world championships. Volunteers from the club have also gone on to make a major impact on the inter-
national stage. Bev Viger, for instance, was the sport manager for figure skating at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Tickets for the anniversary show are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and youth, and children three and under are free. in the Junior Cascades youth program, and both celebrated a provincial AAA title with Yale – Friesen in 2008, Blackman in 2010. The history between the two future Cascades teammates, in fact, goes back even further. "Our moms were really close friends, and they used to room together," Blackman related. "So for a year or two, when I was four or five years old, I used to live with Joel. It was way before we were into basketball or anything. He's always kind of been my big brother. "Me and him, we'd sit at home and play Sega Genesis against each other – usually Street Fighter. He'd always beat me." Craddock is hoping Blackman's development continues to parallel that of Friesen, who was a second team Canada West all-star as a sophomore last season. "We see him as sort of the nextgeneration star," the Cascades
bench boss said. "He's going to contribute as a freshman, and you could see him being a Canada West all-star down the road, a CIS allCanadian talent." Blackman becomes the sixth Yale alumnus on the Cascades roster, joining Friesen, Jasper Moedt, Sheldon Bjorgaard, Josh Kufske and Nathan Kendall. While Blackman solidifies UFV's perimeter rotation, the Cascades also figure to have much-improved depth in the post next season. Moedt and Kyle Grewal are set to return from knee injuries that sidelined them for the entire 201011 campaign, and Craddock has added another top-notch big man in former University of Winnipeg centre Mike James. "He's a 6'6" banger with a really nice post game," Craddock said of James, who is heading into his fifth and final season of CIS eligibility. "The buzz around our program right now is quite exciting."

SAVAGE Rev. Cecil
Annie McMillan Morgan (nee Dawson) Jan. 29th, 1911 - Mar. 21, 2011
Annie passed away peacefully at Stuart Pavilion, Mission, with members of her family at her side. She was predeceased by her husband Jim in 1989, and by her eldest son Jim Jr. (Eleanor) in 1992. She is remembered affectionately by her daughters Ann Philp, Jean Young, and Mary Frame (Gary), her son Tom (Carolyn), ten grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Annie was born on a Saskatchewan homestead to Scottish immigrants. She and her older brothers Bill and Tom were raised on a hardscrabble farm near Dunfermline. After her marriage to Jim, they and their two children moved to B.C. in 1941. They raised their five children in Richmond, and were active in parent, church, and business groups. In 1964, they moved to Oliver, B.C., where they owned and operated the Marshall Wells store for six years. After her husband Jim passed away in 1989, Annie moved to Mission where she spent the last twenty-two years of her life. Annie will be remembered for her curious mind, her steady moral compass, and her generosity to family and friends, as well as her love of gardening. A celebration of Annie’s long and fruitful life will be held on April 16 from 1-4 p.m., in the lounge at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, 8469 Cedar Street, Mission, B.C. Special thanks to the staff at Stuart Pavilion for their dedication and compassionate care. No flowers please.
Roland A. Feltren (Rollie)
Born October 14, 1925, entered peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Saviour on March 22, 2011. Predeceased by his wife Joan of 49 years; he is survived by his children David (Becky), Debbie (Todd) Payne, Stephen (Debbie), Darryl (Karen) and Peter (Katie); siblings Joy (Hugh) Muller and George; 14 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. After his commitment to our country in WW II, Cecil served the Lord faithfully as a pastor for 50 years - 15 of which were with the Sovereign Grace Baptist Church as well as Legion Chaplain in Mission. He will be greatly missed by many family and friends and he will be remembered for his humour, gentle charm, welcoming spirit and the ability to lighten peoples’ hearts. A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 2nd at 1:00 pm at Hatzic Cemetery, 34867 Cemetery Road, Mission. A celebration of his homegoing will follow at 2:00 pm at Northside Community Church, 33507 Dewdney Trunk Rd., Mission. Rev. Bruce Ray will officiate. Philippians 1:6 Wiebe & Jeske 604.859.5885

Matchmaker auditions
Gallery 7 Theatre will be holding open auditions for The Matchmaker, by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, Thornton Wilder. The show is the final production in the group’s 20th anniversary season. Auditions will take place on Thursday, April 7 at 6:30 p.m. at MEI Theatre, 4081 Clearbrook Rd. Male and female performers aged 16 to 65 are invited to attend, along with those interested in working behind the scenes. The Matchmaker follows Horace Vandergelder, a shrewd and wealthy merchant, who is ready to get married. Securing the services of a matchmaker, Vandergelder entrusts his shop to the care of his clerks while he heads to New York City in search of love. Tired of their mundane lives and longing for romance, the clerks close up shop and em-
bark on their own adventure to the city. Things really get complicated when they nearly run into their boss in the city streets. A series of episodes of hide-and-seek ensue in the adventure that inspired the smash-hit Broadway musical, Hello Dolly. “What better way to end our 20th anniversary season than with a comedy about love and adventure,” said Gallery 7 Theatre’s executive artistic director, Ken Hildebrandt. The Matchmaker will be directed by actor, film consultant and theatre director, Annette Reilly. It will run June 10 and 11, 16-18 and 23-25 at 7:30 p.m. with additional matinees on June 11 and 18 at 2 p.m. All interested individuals are asked to sign up for the audition by calling 604-504-5940, emailing info@gallery7theatre.com, or going online to www.gallery7theatre.com.
