MP Fast in cabinet Promoted to International Trade portfolio Abbotsford MP Ed Fast was named a member of cabinet in Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s majority government on Wednesday morning. Fast will serve as Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway. It is his first cabinet posting. “I’m pleased and honoured to take on a position in the prime minister’s cabinet,” Fast told The News. He said his portfolio has two main objectives: Negotiating trade agreements and promoting Canadian business in other countries. He will immediately get to work on negotiating trade agreements with India and the European Union. “It’s a big challenge,” he said. Fast is Abbotsford’s only federal cabinet minister in recent memory. He was surprised when the prime minister called on him. “There are so many eminently qualified people (MPs) in B.C. who could do this job,” he said.
JOHN VAN PUTTEN
Abbotsford News
Ed Fast, seen here after his election night landslide victory in Abbotsford, is one of four B.C. MPs named to Cabinet. “It’s gratifying, but also humbling.” Fast said his days will become a whirlwind of briefings and other activities. “I’m getting ready to move on to this new chapter in my life.”
Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen was one of the first to acknowledge his federal counterpart. “I want to congratulate him and wish him well. It’s great to have someone from Abbotsford
in cabinet.” He said Fast’s role in promoting trade could create some local synergies, and noted the Abbotsford International Airport and UFV are two local organizations working to create stronger international connections. “I have worked with Ed, and he’s very thorough, very professional, and he’s done a very good job,” said van Dongen. Fast is one of nine new faces in cabinet, and joins James Moore, John Duncan and Alice Wong as members from B.C. “With a renewed mandate and a national majority, Canadians can count on this government to pursue measures that create jobs and growth, support seniors, protect our health-care system, fight against crime and reduce and eliminate the deficit,” said Harper in a press release. “The new ministry is fundamentally about stability and continuity. It represents the right mix of experience and new blood. It is the right group of men and women to lead the job of keeping Canada moving forward towards greater prosperity,” added Harper. The promotion gives Fast a raise from $158,000 per year to $233,000.
Heat loss revised to $1.2 million Team’s projected shortfall almost triple last year’s deficit Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News
The Abbotsford Heat hockey club will cost the city an estimated $1.2 million this season, according to a newly audited statement released this week. Originally, it was reported the AHL team would fall $724,000 short for the 2010/2011 campaign, plus a $450,637 shortfall for the 2009/2010 season. However, city manager Frank Pizzuto said an error was made when interpreting the figures. “Pat (Soanes, general manager of finance and corporate services for the city) came to me and told me there was a mistake. So I had to fix the error,” he said. Pizzuto explained the $724,000 figure was a projection for the year 2010, not the entire 2010/2011 season. The full season deficit is estimated to hit the $1.2 million range.
“We erred and we’re correcting it.” Because the final Heat figures are not yet released, the deficit will likely change. “This is just a projection, we will get the actual, final numbers in July,” said
This is just a projection. We will get the actual, final numbers in July.
Frank Pizzuto
Pizzuto. The Heat year-end is June 30, while the city’s fiscal year ends on Dec. 31. Last June, the city projected a final Heat deficit of $485,000 for the 2009/2010 season. The actual deficit was about $35,000 less.
the Wild Orange spa
The city is in the second year of a 10-year contract which guarantees the AHL hockey team revenue of $5.7 million. Any shortfall will be paid by the city. If the city’s new projections are accurate, the Heat will cost Abbotsford $1.65 million over its first two full seasons. Pizzuto said there are three factors in the Heat deficit: attendance, food sales and commercial rights (sponsorships and advertising). The new numbers do not change the overall losses for the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. The AESC lost $3.4 million in 2010 ($1.2 million due to the Heat deficit) and $2.6 million in 2009 (including $450,637 for the Heat). Removing the Heat payments from the overall arena deficit, the AESC lost $2.2 million in 2010 and $2.15 million in 2009. Continued on A5

Dentist’s suspension stands Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
An interim suspension for an Abbotsford dentist will be upheld, after he failed to file submissions to the College of Dental Surgeons of B.C. (CDSBC). Dr. Clark Stelmaschuk is now scheduled to appear before the college for a hearing starting June 8 to determine what disciplinary action, if any, he will face in relation to six patient complaints. Stelmaschuk, who has closed down his practice at #2 – 2757 Bourquin Crescent West, had his licence suspended by the college on Feb. 5. The matter was addressed last month in the Supreme Court of B.C., where Stelmaschuk’s lawyer argued that his client should have had more time to respond to the college before the interim suspension was issued. The court gave him until April 29 to file that response, and until May 10 for a committee
to consider that submission and determine whether the pre-hearing suspension should be lifted. CDSBC registrar Heather MacKay said the college did not receive submissions from Stelmaschuk, and the interim suspension stands. The disciplinary hearing will now determine whether Stelmaschuk, 68, should be permanently banned from practising, or whether he should be monitored and/or have conditions placed on him. Stelmaschuk told the Abbotsford News last month that he does not know if he will open another location if the college determines he can practise again. The specific complaints against Stelmaschuk have not been revealed publicly, but the B.C. Supreme Court documents state they mainly involve “allegations of dental implants gone very wrong, resulting in long-term consequences and pain.
More entertainment in 2011 From A5
“That figure has remained steady, said Pizzuto, adding Global Spectrum managed to cut costs in 2010 to compensate for a lack of events. He noted the larger number of entertainment acts so far in 2011 is a positive indication the arena deficit may drop next year. This year’s $3.4-million arena deficit is more than $1.5 million higher than was budgeted. The extra deficit will be covered using funds
saved from other city departments. Pat Soanes said while the AESC may have lost money, other departments did better than expected. “We have an operating budget of about $140 million, she said, adding there was a small surplus – enough to cover the extra $1.5 million – at the end of the year. Job vacancies, increased savings on purchases and other cost-saving measures created the overall operations surplus.

Heat numbers get colder Following the numbers around the city’s contract with the Heat hockey team is neither an easy, nor an uplifting exercise – for the public and civic officials alike. This week, we were told the figures recently reported for the 2010/11 season were incorrect. Instead of a projected $724,000 payment to the AHL club, the City of Abbotsford has adjusted that up to $1.2 million. There was some confusion over payments made during the team’s fiscal year, which actually spans the calendar from July to June. The bottom line is considerably more disturbing than the error. In its first season, the city paid the Heat $450,000 under its 10-year contract, which guarantees the club $5.7 million in revenue. Any shortfall below that ceiling is covered with public funds. In its second season, we are now being told the team is projected to cost the city $1.2 million, although that may
change when final figures are tallied next month. Nevertheless, it means the hockey club will have nearly tripled its deficit in year two. Team management has said there is a bright point, in that attendance at games apparently rose toward the end of the season. We can only hope that trend keeps climbing in dramatic fashion in 2011/12. There is increasing talk among critics that the city should pull out of the deal. Aside from what would undoubtedly be a severe financial penalty for doing so – the contract does not clearly specify what that might be, possibly leaving it to litigation – it’s too early to pull the pin on this endeavour. There are marketing strategies yet to be undertaken, fans to be won over. However, the deal does contain a fiveyear financial review clause. The situation could be termed thus – three years to make it, rewrite it, or perhaps, even break it.
Stick men, straw men debate the HST Tom
Fletcher
B.C. Views By now you’ve probably been exposed to the B.C. government’s “stick man” ad campaign to raise awareness of the harmonized sales tax. Stick men, or rather stick persons, sort out conflicting claims about the tax by going to the B.C. government’s website to get an accurate summary of what is and isn’t costing them more. Later versions will no doubt feature stick persons checking their mail for brochures offering arguments for and against the HST, and of course, those allimportant mail-in ballots that will arrive in June. This is an urgent pre-requisite to an informed vote. Anyone who listens in to a telephone town hall or phone-in show, or gets reader feedback such as I receive, knows that the basic facts are still widely misunderstood. So what does the NDP opposition focus
on? The ads cost $5 million, grumbles NDP finance critic Bruce Ralston. Add that to town halls and mailers and the referendum funding boils down to $7 million for pro-HST and a mere $250,000 for the FightHST effort. This is a classic “straw man” argument, where one sets up a false premise and then knocks it down. The ads do not advocate, they merely inform. Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson propped up the NDP’s oldest scarecrow, that big “Liberal donor corporations” are the main beneficiaries of the HST. This is a vital point for rural B.C., which depends on resource industries with huge machinery investments, and he has it exactly wrong. In fact, the entire ‘big business benefits most from HST’ narrative is false. Vancouver tax lawyer David Robertson points out that this is one of the “myths and misrepresentations” propagated by Bill Vander Zalm, who has effectively set NDP tax policy since their limping retreat on the carbon tax. In 24 pages, Robertson has written the clearest analysis I’ve seen so far, including a thorough demolition of Vander Zalm’s crude scare campaign known as FightHST, which has singled out banks
and large resource companies. Robertson notes that banks are actually worse off. “…unlike most businesses, banks, financial institutions and insurance companies cannot recover GST/HST they pay on expenses,” he writes. They actually pay more under HST than they did under the old provincial sales tax (PST).
Anyone who listens in to a telephone town hall... knows that the basic facts are still widely misunderstood. As for FightHST’s other specified villains, “large corporations” and “large resource companies,” their machinery and production equipment were long ago exempted from sales tax. No change there. “What the PST legislation did not contain were PST exemptions aimed specifically at small, independent businesses,” Robertson writes. “So construction workers like weld-
ers, plumbers, electricians and other tradespersons had to pay an additional seven per cent PST on their work trucks, tools and equipment that they used to earn a living; retailers and corner store operators had to pay an additional seven per cent on their shelving, refrigerators and cash registers; accountants and other professionals had to pay PST on their office furniture, computers and software; truckers had to pay an additional seven per cent PST on their truck tractors and trailers …” and so forth. This is what the HST fixes. Obviously, Big Labour doesn’t like all these independent contractors. Therefore the NDP must also “fight” HST. I’ve mentioned before that the NDPVander Zalm axis of nonsense wants to deprive the poor of a modest tax shift in their favour, paid for by voluntary purchases of more affluent consumers. I’ve talked about the trend towards self-employment and small business as the Canadian economy adapts in a fastchanging world. You may not like that trend, and you may wish that everyone could have a union job with an employersubsidized pension. That’s not what is happening today. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Dire predictions
There will soon come a time when most may wish they had never heard the name Stephen Harper, let alone voted for him. He has a majority government even though 60 per cent of the electorate voted against him. He plans to get ‘tough on crime’ even though the crime rate is down. He plans to build a lot of prisons without more judges, so the only way that will work is to bring in compulsory minimum sentencing like our U.S. neighbour, where you are sent to prison without trial for misdemeanors. Maybe even vagrancy will qualify, if so you’d better hope you don’t lose your job! These prisons will of course be private work (slave) prisons, otherwise how can they be paid for?
R
A RY C L U B O T O
Also, Harper’s new ‘health police’ are trained and ready to go. Their job is to remove all of those nasty natural health products that aren’t government (pharmaceutical) approved. Will alternative healing methods be outlawed too? I wonder if they will eventually outlaw the humble dandelion? Mine are organic; I eat them and the leaves regularly. A most beneficial herb that we are pressured to eradicate by ‘big pharmaceuticals’ cousins, the pesticide peddlers. The U.S. imprisons more citizens than any other country in the world – will we soon be number two? You betcha, if the ‘Stephen Harper government’ has its way. Gary Huntbatch

I have never completely understood why the public sector unions in this province are so rabidly opposed to publicprivate partnerships and contracting out. Don’t public sector union members pay taxes like the rest of us? Don’t they want to see their tax dollars spent as wisely, as efficiently and as cost-effectively as possible? Public-private partnerships, contracting out, and privatization are well-established, well-proven ways to get the most out of our
public tax dollars and ensure that these dollars are being spent to their best advantage. The private sector has the ability to leverage experience and expertise the public sector does not have while transferring financial risk away from taxpayers

For its 40th birthday, the Kariton Art Gallery and Boutique received a make-over from the City of Abbotsford. With a fresh coat of paint, an outdoor stage, a new box office and an arts resource centre in the works, the Abbotsford Arts Council is hoping to create an arts hub in Mill Lake Park. Nina Corrie with the Arts Council is confident that the building’s new fire-engine red colour, which can be seen from the street, will draw people in. Located at 2387 Ware Street, the free gallery will also be easier to differentiate from Trethewey House, which is next door. “Before, people would think we were a house and would walk up, peer in the window, and step back, unsure if they should come in,” said Corrie. “I think now people will know we’re open for business and that we want them to come in.” This summer, the new stage is going to host the popular Envision Coffee House Series, which will be re-titled the Envision Concert in the Park Series. In the past, the shows have been held in coffee shops across town. Hosting the performance

Arts council executive director Judy Whyte admires the Kariton Gallery. outdoors eliminates the space constraints while offering a family friendly environment, said Corrie. Her vision is to have hundreds of blankets spread across the lawn. The first outdoor event is on June 18. The performances will run every Saturday until Sept. 3. Then they’ll return indoors for the winter. During the afternoon, vendors will be selling everything from jewelry to pottery. And during the performances, which will run from 4-6 p.m., the coffee house that sponsors the act will be selling drinks and treats. As the stage will be free on Saturday afternoons and Sundays, the Arts Council is calling for local buskers to perform, including anything from
mimes, dancers, puppet theatre, to singers, said Corrie. Another new addition to the gallery is a box office. Tickets will be sold for events hosted by member groups of the Arts Council. “This provides them with a way to reach a new audience. People will come in to see the visual arts, but perhaps they will be intrigued by performances as well,” said Judy Whyte, executive director of the Arts Council. “We want to represent all of the arts in Abbotsford, which is why we have the boutique, box office, stage and gallery.” For more information on Kariton Art Gallery, which is free to enter, visit www.abbotsfordartscouncil.org or call 604852-9358.

NATIONAL POLICE WEEK MAY FIFTEEN TO TWENTY ONE, TWO THOUSAND ELEVEN
Offences drop six per cent Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Criminal offences in Abbotsford dropped six per cent overall in 2010 compared to the previous year, according to the year-end statistical report released Tuesday by the Abbotsford Police Department (APD). The report lists 9,636 criminal code offences last year, compared to 10,206 in 2009. Decreases were noted in every category except six of the 25 listed. Among the most significant were attempted murder (down 100 per cent), homicides (56 per cent), business break-ins (38 per cent) and robbery (26 per cent). The areas that experienced an increase over 2009 were “other” crimes against property (up 44 per cent), fraud (11 per cent), residential break-in (nine per cent), firearms/explosives (five per cent), assault with weapon (three per cent) and other miscellaneous criminal offences (two per cent). Deputy Chief Rick Lucy said the hike in other crimes against property (OCAP) is an indication that police shifted resources to higher-priority concerns. OCAP offences include vandalism or break-ins to structures other than
homes and businesses – for example, sheds, barns and other outbuildings. Lucy said thefts from these buildings usually involve smaller items and do not present the same safety risk as a home or business break-in. “If you have to make decisions on a priority level of the three types of break-and-enters, we’re least worried about those,” he said. He acknowledged police “failed” in the area of home break-ins last year, but said steps have been taken in 2011 to address the problem. Police now keep closer track of individuals in the area who have a history of such offences and, when a break-in is reported, they are more readily able to identify potential suspects. So far this year, such offences are down eight per cent, compared to the same period in 2010. Lucy said one area that police are thrilled about is the drop in the homicide and attempted murder rates from ‘09 to ‘10. In 2009, Abbotsford recorded 11 murders, with eight of them linked to gangs and/or drugs. Last year, there were four murders, with two being connected to drugs or gangs. Lucy said the efforts of the gang
suppression unit played a big role in the decrease, with one of their tactics being the disruption of violent crime. So far this year, there have been no murders or attempted murders. Criminal Code offences in Abbotsford have dropped 28 per cent overall from 2007 to 2010, according to the report.

City hosts firefighters
Three separate firerelated associations are joining forces for a big nine-day event in Abbotsford. The Fire Chiefs’ Association of BC, the BC Fire Training Officers Association and the BC Emergency Vehicle Technicians Association, will combine their annual provincial conferences into one. The conference will take place from June 1 to June 9, at the Ramada Plaza and Conference Centre and the Fire Service Expo will take place June 4-6 at Tradex. “By combining their resources, these
groups will be able to collaborate on initiatives that impact firefighters across B.C.,” said Mayor George Peary. This event will bring a number of renowned speakers to Abbotsford to present on topics including, training, administration, and operational issues faced by today’s fire service. “By pooling their resources, these groups will provide many benefits to firefighters in B.C.,” said Dean Colthorp, president of the BC Fire Training Officers Association. “We expect the outcomes will be felt for
Learn to make a difference Rick Goossen will present “Building a Great Company: How and Why to Go from Making a Profit to Making a Difference” at the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce’s monthly luncheon on May 26 at the Ramada Plaza and Conference Centre. Goossen is the senior relationship manager and strategic planning specialist for Covenant Planning Group Inc. He has written five books and more than 200 articles. “In today’s environment, leading companies are pro-active, engaged, and collaborative” said Goossen. Business used to be just about making a profit; now stakeholders expect much more. Both customers and employees expect a company to have a soul – to be interested in making a difference in its community. “A company will never reach its true potential unless it goes beyond just making a profit, which is indeed the crucial engine of the company, to engaging employees in making a difference in the community.” The luncheon takes place May 26 and features an extended networking time, starting at 11 a.m. Pre-registration is required and chamber members ($32) and non-members ($42) can get tickets at www.abbotsfordchamber.com.
$2.6 million for fire hall PAX Construction Ltd., a Burnaby-based general contracting firm, has been awarded a contract worth $2.595 million (not including HST) to construct Abbotsford’s newest fire hall. Fire Hall 8 will be located at 30811 Blueridge Dr. and is designated as a two-bay, drive-through, career building capable of accommodating fulltime personnel. When completed in January of 2012, the new facility will serve the area of west Abbotsford. PAX Construction’s bid was the lowest of five pre-qualified bids received. Abbotsford Fire Chief Don Beer said the project should now come in under budget, which was set at $3 million.

years to come.” As a major component of the event, the largest fire service trade show in the Pacific Northwest will is taking place, allowing firefighters from across the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley to visit Abbotsford and experience what is currently available to assist fire departments in their day-to-day operations.

Lure of the rings
Olympics the goal for Canadian women’s hoops team Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
Teresa Gabriele remembers it like it was yesterday – marching into Sydney's Olympic Stadium during the opening ceremonies for the 2000 Summer Games. It was truly a goosebumps-inducing moment, and it serves as powerful motivation for the Mission-born point guard as the Canadian senior women's basketball team opens its qualifying
campaign for the 2012 London Games this week at the University of the Fraser Valley. "I was 20 when that happened, and I was so young," marveled Gabriele, now 31, and the only current Canadian player who was on the roster the last time the national team qualified for the Olympics. "It's just a whirlwind when you're there. You don't really know until a little bit later how much that means. To go
again and experience another one, it would be just amazing." Team Canada opened an eight-day run at UFV's Envision Athletic Centre on Monday, and they depart for a series of exhibition games in Europe on Tuesday, May 24. They're gearing up for the FIBA Americas Championship in Colombia (Sept. 24-Oct. 1), where one Olympic berth is up for grabs. Canada, No. 12 in the

The nations that finish second through fourth have a second chance at the FIBA World Qualifying Tournament in June 2012. For Canadian head coach Allison McNeill, time is of the essence. Yale wins HS hockey title Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
The host Yale Lions absolutely stole the show at the B.C. high school hockey provincials on the weekend, putting two teams on the podium. Yale Blue won the title for the second straight year, beating the Earl Marriott Mariners 7-3 in the final on Sunday evening at Matsqui Recreation Centre. Yale White, the school’s ‘B’ team, won bronze, and might have finished higher if they hadn’t run into their Blue brethren in the semifinals. “We had tremendous depth,” noted Billy Wilms, program di-
Playfair pleased to return If the NHL comes calling, Jim Playfair will listen, but he's excited about the prospect of returning to his post behind the bench of the Abbotsford Heat. The Calgary Flames, the Heat's NHL parent, have picked up the option year on Playfair's contract. "I have a window in my contract where I’m pursued by another NHL team for another position, I can talk to them," Playfair told The News on Tuesday. "But we really enjoy the (Abbotsford) area. It's just a matter of trying to continue what we started – trying to get this team into the playoffs consistently." More coverage at abbynews.com

Mike Nolan also tallied twice in the title game, while Brendan Sharp picked up the win between the pipes. “Jake was riding on a high from the draft,” Wilms said. “This is a midget league, but we were allowed to bring up a few bantams. Membership in BC Hockey’s fledgling high school league expanded from six teams in its inaugural season to 20 this year. “Next year, it’ll get even bigger,” Wilms predicted. “Interior teams want to get on board. “The high school model has been really effective in Eastern Canada, we just haven’t seen it in the West, for reasons I don’t know. It gives kids a wonderful opportunity to represent their schools.”

Helping your kids lead a healthy life
The Intern of the Year Who has what it takes to win the title?
T
he chance to win fortune, fame and bragging rights has returned with The Intern 2. The biggest contest hosted by the Abbotsford News will see 20 University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) students compete for a $5,000 internship at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC) and the title of Intern of the Year. The winner of the contest will be determined by your votes. So far, the students have been split into 10 teams of two, completed a photo shoot and met their local business sponsor. Their task is to create a marketing plan for the business with the specific goal of reaching the 18-to-35-year-old demographic in Abbotsford. Each team will create a video to be showcased at abbynews.com, a fullpage advertisement to be run in The Abbotsford News Daily and explore opportunities in social media. There will also be a mini-task of promoting events
for the AESC. Voting will take place throughout the contest in Survivor style. The teams that receive the most votes will be eliminated. In week four, the bottom seven teams will be dropped. And when the top three teams are announced, the six remaining contestants will continue on as individuals, with only one winning the title of The Intern 2011. The combination of reality TV and social networking saw last year’s contest garner votes from around B.C., Canada, and world-wide, including countries such as Saudi Arabia, England, Mexico, Pakistan, Australia and Switzerland. According to Leslie Courchesne, director of marketing and communications at UFV, the contest is beneficial to all students taking part, not just the winner. The tasks that students are given to impress local businesses, along with their short deadlines, will teach them the
immediate value of their efforts, said Courchesne. “Competing in this contest is an excellent experience for UFV students. It challenges them to excel, to stand out and to really show their stuff ... It will help them build connections with local businesses and gain new skills and confidence from the experience.” In addition to advancing their resumes, it gives students a new perspective on what they are learning in the classroom. It’s also preparing the next generation of decision-makers and community leaders who will shape the future of the Fraser Valley, added Courchesne. The winner will learn first-hand how to run a large event, and what it takes to bring a high-calibre show to the Fraser Valley, said Jason Blumenfeld, general manager of the AESC. Working with the director of marketing at the AESC, Michaella Petrik, the intern will help promote numerous up-
coming shows. They’ll be doing everything from the grassroot stages of marketing, like handing out flyers, to dabbling in show marketing and working with local media, she said. “This is absolutely a great opportunity for students,” said Petrik. “They get to have some real life experience in venue marketing before they hit the real world.” Winning the contest last year helped Lindsay Meloshinsky build her business contacts, gave her confidence and widened her future opportunities, she said. But she’s not the only one who won a prize. One lucky voter received a weekend away in Victoria last year – a prize that will again be awarded to someone who votes off the interns. You can vote in three ways: online at abbynews.com, in the paper and at the sponsor location for each team. For more information, visit abbynews.com and click on the entertainment tab.

BRIGHTS It’s all about colour this spring. The rich earthy tones that dominate the cooler seasons are gone, while shades of fuchsia, violet, lemon and
tangerine take centre stage, rejuvenating the fashion scene. But don’t overplay such attention-getting colours. It’s best to choose one or two pieces – such as a tank-and-cardigan combo – or a key accessory, and pair them with a classic spring/summer neutral such as navy or white. Think classy and cool, and you can’t go wrong.

Rev up wardrobe on a budget Clothing styles change on a whim according to what trend forecasters see as the “it” items of the season. People looking to keep abreast of certain styles or just maintain a fresh supply of different wardrobe options may find that replenishing a closet can be an expensive venture. But it doesn’t have to be. People interested in refreshing their selection of clothing on a regular basis might want to consider these options, in addition to buying retail Clothing Swap A good way to socialize and switch up a wardrobe is to host a clothing swap party. Invite around 10 friends or family members to be part of it. Be sure to have at least two or three of the samesized people so that there won’t be an abundance of items to fit one person and not enough to fit another. Shoes and accessories are also acceptable. Set the rules for the event, where each person is entitled to take as many items as she has brought. Encourage guests to bring clean, gently used items that are in good quality. Have refreshments on hand and opportunities to chat over styles and options. Whatever clothes are not taken by others can be donated to charity. Consignment Stores These days, consignment shops are
big business and good places for savvy shoppers to visit. Much like overstock stores sell items on discount that are on par with department stores, consignment shops often offer new or very lightly used items for resale – at a fraction of the original retail price. Plus, they’re an ideal place to look for unique pieces and accessories that might otherwise have been out of budget. Shop Basics When buying new items at a store, buy pieces that can be put together in a variety of combinations. Stick to similar colours and themes so that each piece will work seamlessly. Consider multi-layered items that can be worn with a cardigan or without, or go from the office to a dinner date afterward. Remember, items that blend can be worn more often because they won’t stick out in the minds of others as something flashy. Explore Tailoring Think about how Molly Ringwald’s character turned pieces of fabric into new creations in the cult 1980s film, “Pretty in Pink.” With some simple tailoring, just about anyone can modify items to make them look brand new. For those who don’t know their bobbins from their seam-rippers, make friends with someone who does and enlist some help with fashion redesign.

my 30 Rules are meant to be broken when it comes to makeup >> Thursday, May 19, 2011
Some ways are better, or more efficient, than others We all make mistakes – in life, in fashion, in relationships, and, yes, in makeup. While there really are no hard-set rules when it comes to makeup application, there are definitely ways to do things better or in a more efficient way. Besides, rules are meant to be broken, right? Your foundation is meant to create a flawless base for the rest of your makeup and give the appearance of even-toned, smooth skin, but when you start with the wrong foundation colour, you are setting yourself up for one of the biggest beauty blunders – the foundation “mask.” It’s not uncommon to see a woman with a line of makeup running along her jaw, which is the result of poorly blended product and a shade that doesn’t match. The simple remedy is to blend, blend, blend your foundation and/or get help purchasing a foundation that matches your skin tone in a store that allows you to test the shades before you buy. If your eyeliner or mascara runs and smudges throughout the day, whether it is the result of oily skin or a mid-day
workout, chances are Chrissy you need to switch to products that come in a waterproof formula. Many eyeliners, whether they are pencil or liquid, come in waterproof formulas that won’t move even when you do. Eye makeup removers will be your best friend at the end of the day when it comes time to remove these long-lasting products. Another option to make your makeup last is to use your cream and powder products together. Cream eyeshadow with powder eyeshadow pressed on top will help reduce creasing and smudging and will increase the intensity of colour, helping it show up better and go the distance. You can also use a kohl eyeliner to smudge along the lash line and then follow up with an eyeshadow over that eyeliner with a small angle brush to give your lash line more definition.
Lambert Beyond Beauty
Another debate is whether eyeliner should be applied before or after eyeshadow. Ultimately, do what works best for you. The biggest benefit to applying eyeliner first is that if you make a mistake (for example, a thick line or bad wing tip), especially with liquid liner, you can remove it without removing the eyeshadow underneath it. Applying eyeshadow second means that you may inadvertently reduce the intensity of colour of the liner beneath it, but neither way is right or wrong. Don’t be the lady whose lipstick went away, only to leave a sad ring of lip liner around the lips. Fill in your whole lip with the lip liner and then apply your lipstick on top. This will help to ensure that you have a solid base of colour to fall back on when you have blotted or kissed away the top layer of colour. The less you press, lick,
or rub your lips together, the more likely that your lipstick (or gloss) will stay in place. A vibrant and healthy “J. Lo glow” is sought after by many, but try not to go overboard with your bronzer. No one likes to be called Captain Orange. Use a bronzer sparingly and only on the areas of the face that would naturally warm up in colour from exposure to the sun. The top of the forehead, nose, tip of the chin and the cheekbones only need a slight dusting with a golden, bronzed tone that complements your own skin tone. Avoid colours that are too brown so that you don’t look dirty. You can’t really go too wrong with your makeup, but if you do, there’s this crazy thing called cleanser that you can keep on guard and ready. Don’t be afraid to use it. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again! Chrissy Lambert is a freelance makeup artist and writer in the Fraser Valley. She can be reached at Chrissy@makeupinfusion.com or www.makeupinfusion.com

1 - Plan fun, energetic things to do as a family and with friends. 2 - Include your child in daily activities. Involve them in cleaning the house, gardening, walking to the store, or cooking healthy meals.
Help your kids lead a healthy lifestyle by involving them in fun outdoor games.
Active living Children need active play every day to be healthy. Active play is any activity where your child is moving. Aim for 90 minutes of active play each day. This does not have to happen all at once – spread activities throughout the day. Be sensitive to your child’s needs. Remember that each child is unique – what one child likes may not appeal to another. Help your child choose active play that is fun for them. Choose active play
that is focused on participation rather than competition. Explore activities such as going up and down slides or dancing to music with family and friends. One of the best ways to be sure that you have an active child is to be active yourself. Be a role model for active living – actions speak louder than words. When your child sees you being active and having fun, your child is more likely to be active. Eat healthy foods together, be active
give give yo yourself gift
4 - Limit your child’s screentime to one hour a day. Also, set limits on the amount of time your family spends watching TV, playing video games, and being on the computer.

The 2007 Sandhill Estate Vineyard Small Lot Sangiovese ($30/14.5% ABV) from B.C.’s Okanagan is a great pasta-supper friend. Sip it when you serve linguini with a red sauce full of diced tomatoes, capers, red bell peppers, garlic, some dried chillies, a whole bag of baby organic spinach, fresh oregano and basil, and a splash (or two or three) of the wine. If it’s too warm in your kitchen for pasta, this wine will sing a lovely tune to grilled burgers basted with tangy barbecue sauce. When I opened and poured this Sangiovese, I found it cheery and full of bright cherries, vanilla and a little bit of earth on the nose. On the palate, I tasted more bright red cherries, vanilla and tobacco. And, while I really liked this juicy wine and would gladly serve and sip it again, I wish
it were closer to the $20 mark. For a value-packed red wine, give the 2010 Three Winds Syrah ($13.99/13.5% ABV) a go. This wallet-conscious French wine hails from the Languedoc and is stuffed with the Áavour and aroma proÀles typical to Syrah: rich red and black fruit, wet gravel, spice and salami on the nose, with ripe red and black berries, pepper, a little bit of licorice and a hint of oak on the palate. The Three Winds has well-integrated tannins and a lovely mouth-feel that, together with its aromas and Áavours, make it the perfect wine for your grilled steak smothered in garlic, rosemary and freshly cracked black pepper. Visit Kathleen Rake at her blog, www.BetweenTheVines.ca, for more wine-soaked musings.

WAARDENBURG James James (Jim) Waardenburg was born July 30, 1936 in Winterswyk, Netherlands. He immigrated to Canada with his parents and brother Albert when he was 17 years old joining his older brother Wayne and sister Rene. He married Phyllis Rolls in 1957 and they raised four children: Lawrence (Andrea), Debbie, Barry (Sharon), and Darryl (Joanne). Jim loved his family which also included grandchildren Brandon (Tiffany), Kyle, Pamela, Makayla, Kira, Bryanna, Dakota, and Wyatt and great grandchildren Isaiah and Jacob. Jim enjoyed working at the Royal Bank for 16 years (1953 to 1969) and being an active member in the dairy industry. He served on several boards - Director and President with the Fraser Valley Milk Producers Co-op Assn, Chairman of the BC Farm Debt Review Board, Director and President for Dairy Farmers of Canada, Vice-President of Dairyland, and President of the MSA Society of the Mentally Handicapped (now known as the MSA Society for Community Living). He has made many lasting friendships over the years. He was a proud owner and operator of the Waardenburg Brothers Dairy Farm in Matsqui from 1968 to 2000 along with brothers Wayne (Clara) and Albert (Ann). His nephews Paul Van Dokkumburg and Wesley Waardenburg later joined the operations until the farm retired in 2000. Jim loved camping and fishing with his family and friends. His favourite camping and fishing spot was in Powell River, BC. During retirement, in addition to RVing, he took a keen interest in gardening and worked in the yard keeping the gardens neat and tidy. Jim passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital & Cancer Centre after a courageous battle with lung cancer. The family would like to express sincere gratitude to all the doctors, nurses and brother-in-law, Pat Bolen, who gave exceptional care during his stay. A Visitation will be held at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Rd, Abbotsford, Thursday, May 19 from 7 to 9 pm. Funeral Service will be held at the Salvation Army Cascade Community Church (35190 Delair Road, Abbotsford BC) on Friday, May 20, 2011 at 1:00 pm.
