James Paul pulls the gutter off the Matsqui Village pool building on Wednesday morning, while behind him the demolition of the pool is underway. A new playground, picnic area and sports court is being installed at a cost of $250,000. The outdoor pool opened in the 1960s. Last year, extensive leaking and an estimated repair cost of more than $1 million prompted council to close the pool. Workers will clear the debris and fill the pool with aggregate before covering it with asphalt to create a sports court.

Job losses, or fear-mongering? Institute predicts fallout from minimum wage hikes Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News
Increasing British Columbia’s minimum wage to $10.25 an hour could lead to a loss of more than 52,000 jobs, according to a new report from the Fraser Institute. “While increasing the minimum wage may be done with good intentions, the facts show that it has very negative consequences,” said Niels Veldhuis, Fraser Institute senior economist. “When gover nments impose high labour costs on businesses, employers react by hiring fewer workers and reducing the number of hours employees work.” The study found increasing the minimum wage has a significant, negative impact on employment, particularly for younger workers. Victims under 10
U.S. authorities alerted Abby police Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Police have charged a 58-year-old Abbotsford man with making pornographic videos involving two children under the age of 10. The man cannot be named due to a publication ban issued to protect the identity of the victims. Const. Ian MacDonald said he could not reveal how the man knew the victims, who both reside in Abbotsford, nor their sexes or exact ages. He could only discuss the videos in general terms. “The children were victimized and abused and it appears to be sexual,” he said.
MacDonald said the children have been identified and are receiving the appropriate support to deal with the “severe trauma” they have experienced. He said police believe the two are the only victims, but haven’t ruled out the possibility there could be more. The man was brought to the attention of Abbotsford Police by U.S. authorities, who had discovered that another man was in possession of two child porn videos that appeared to originate from Abbotsford. Local police and the Integrated Child Exploitation Unit took over on the Canadian side, and the porn was traced to an Abbotsford home. Forensic evidence obtained from computers seized from the home determined the videos had been produced in and distributed from Abbotsford.
MacDonald said it is rare to find such images created on a local level – people charged with child pornography offences usually access videos and photos made in other countries. “I think a lot of people will, in many instances, imagine child pornography being created in another part of the world. It creates a distance, but (this case) should be an alert to people that we are not immune to the kinds of crimes taking place elsewhere,” he said. MacDonald said the accused has no previous criminal history and was not someone who was on “police radar.” He has been charged with making child porn, distributing child porn, sexual interference of a person under 16, and invitation to sexual touching under 16. He has been released from custody.
Tory machine boosts Fast Candidates reflect on election results
Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News
Ed Fast’s opponents were better organized during the 2011 election campaign, so his Conservative machine cranked up its efforts and delivered the most votes he has ever received in Abbotsford. In elections past, the local Liberal and NDP constituency associations had been still looking for a candidate to run after the writ was dropped. This time both had their candidates in place and campaigning. The NDP’s David Murray said he was knocking on doors in Abbotsford for a year and a half, talking to people about their concerns. His party put up three times the number of lawn signs during the campaign. The Conservative response snuffed any chance of a breakthrough. “Our team worked harder than it ever has before,” said Fast. He said it was a challenge to have Murray, at an allcandidates meeting, talking about an orange wave sweeping through Abbotsford. “Boy, does that motivate our team.” One volunteer said a good example of the increased dedication was that on election night they were still working the phones, trying

Fast acknowledged Murray’s gains – he improved NDP fortunes from 13 per cent to a second-best 20 per cent in the Abbotsford riding. But he suggested it may have also been the result of a strong national campaign by NDP
leader Jack Layton, the new leader of the official opposition. “A rising tide lifts all ships,” said Fast. He called Monday’s events “The most memorable election that I can recall.” “Canadians have finally entrusted us with a majority government. I see a bright future for Canada, and for Abbotsford.” Fast expects to be called back to Ottawa in a matter of weeks, so the Conservative majority can pass a budget. He will also learn his job responsibilities. He acknowledged that the Stave Lake water project is a high priority locally, and whether it is funded through a P3 model or by traditional methods, he will be behind the project. “I’m going to work very hard to get some federal assistance,” he said. “I’m looking forward to serving the community for another four years.” The voter turnout in Abbotsford was 49,806, which was 59.2 per cent of the 84,131 registered electors. This was slightly below the national voter turnout of 61 per cent. Murray was elated by the party’s national results, rising from 36 seats to 102, Continued on A6

NewsBytes HANDGUNS A man who was allegedly found with two loaded handguns in his vehicle after asking a police officer to obtain his OxyContin prescription has now been charged. Matthew Michael Ireland, 22, faces seven weapons charges, possession of stolen property under $5,000, and “break out after committing an offence.” It is alleged that Ireland was caught on video surveillance breaking out of a store in Sevenoaks Shopping Centre on April 23. He was arrested for that offence eight days later and placed in the back of a police car. He then asked the arresting officer to obtain the OxyContin left in his pickup truck. While searching for the pills, the officer allegedly found a .45 calibre semiautomatic handgun and a .357 Magnum.
WATER MAIN A contract worth almost $16.5 million has been awarded to Sandpiper Contracting LLP of Surrey for the installation of a regional water transmission main for the Abbotsford Mission Water and Sewer Commission and a sanitary sewer syphon, for the city of Abbotsford. The work will take place along Gladwin Road. Abbotsford is responsible for $2.16 million of the contract for the sanitary sewer portion, while the remainder is a regional water expenditure.
ROBBERY An Aldergrove shopkeeper was beaten with a hammer early Monday morning by two robbers. They entered the convenience store at the corner of 29th Avenue and 272nd Street shortly after 7 a.m. Both were wearing hooded clothing and one of them struck the shopkeeper twice with the hammer, before fleeing with cash from the till. The injuries were not life threatening, and the victim was treated at Abbotsford hospital. The robbers fled in an older, white four-door Ford vehicle, such as a Taurus or Contour. Police are seeking tips regarding the vehicle and ask that information be called to RCMP at 604-532-3200 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-2228477.

Victim’s sister recalls crash Urges teens to think about road safety
Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Christina Thrasher recalled how her sister, Jess, always used to make her laugh. She related the time that Jess convinced her to run down the street in the pouring rain, wearing only their bathing suits. They were sick for two weeks after that. The memories are all Christina has left. Jess, 16, was killed on Jan. 6, 2008, when she was a passenger in a truck driven by her close friend, Katie McKenzie, 17. The vehicle hit a patch of black ice on Bradner Road near Downes, ran into a telephone pole, travelled across a ditch and ended up on its roof crushed against a tree. Both girls, students of Rick Hansen Secondary, died instantly. Speed was believed to be a factor in the crash. Christina shared the story at a road safety presentation held

Abbotsford News
Christina Thrasher speaks to students at W.J. Mouat. Wednesday at W. J. Mouat Secondary. The Abbotsford Police Department program has been visiting local high schools to remind students to think about how their decisions – such as speeding or not wearing a seatbelt – can change their lives. Const.JohnDavidson, who leads the presentations, said one of the hardest things he has to do as a police officer is inform families when there has been a vehicle fatality. Many of these incidents are due to poor decisions.
“It makes me very sad and it makes me very angry because it’s completely avoidable.” Christina discussed what it was like for her to receive the call from the police the night her sister died. “At first, I thought it was some kind of joke my sister was playing ... I felt my body go numb and the phone drop from my hand as I dropped to my knees and screamed Jess’s name.” She said she can still hear the screams that her dad made when he
was told. Christina, who has her sister’s name in a tattoo on the inside of her wrist, said she speaks publicly about the tragedy so that young people will think about their behaviours behind the wheel or as a passenger. She said there might have been something Jess could have done to prevent the accident. She urged the crowd to remember that “with freedom comes responsibility.” “Don’t be that tattoo on somebody’s wrist,” she said, displaying her tattoo to the audience. The presentation also featured several public service commercials from the U.K. that offered graphic depictions of car crashes. Two students left the auditorium as they were shown, and Davidson acknowledged they are difficult to watch. “People have to keep making these commercials because people keep dying,” he said.

Now, down to business
The federal election results demonstrated three things. One is that this election, despite many predictions to the contrary at its start, energized many voters. The second thing it clearly showed is that most Canadians see national issues from one of two major perspectives — the less government/ lower taxes/law and order perspective of the Conservatives, or the more activist government/expanding programs/‘soak the rich’ perspective of the NDP. The Liberals, in trying to strike a balance between the two perspectives, found little traction. They will be less of a force in the next Parliament and leader Michael Ignatieff is finished. The third and most positive thing is the rejection of the Bloc Quebecois by the vast majority of Quebecers, relegating the party to four seats. For the first time since 1988, most MPs elected in Quebec support their province being part of Canada. This is an enormous step forward. Prime Minister Stephen Harper
is now in power with a majority. He pledged to work with other parties and govern for all Canadians. That pledge will be tested many times. NDP leader Jack Layton, who ran a positive and upbeat campaign, is now the leader of the opposition. As such, although he might speak with more clout, he’s not in a position of any greater power. Less, in fact, given the end to any coalition pressure. In articulating his vision of Canada, Layton will have to be more realistic about how the economy works, and how jobs are created. However, his emphasis on preserving important social programs like health care and ensuring that average families get decent tax breaks is needed, at a time when many people are struggling. The people of Canada, from many disparate regions of the country, have spoken. They want Parliament to get down to business, without any unnecessary drama or an election for at least four years. – Black Press
Town halls: Twitter for normal people Tom
Fletcher
B.C. Views These days the media never shut up about Facebook and Twitter and “viral videos.” In this year’s political madhouse, no candidate can be caught without a social media presence. So it surprises me that the breakout technology for public engagement turns out to be huge conference calls on the old landline telephone. “Tele-town halls” were first deployed here by B.C. Liberal leadership candidate George Abbott. He got such big participation that Kevin Falcon’s deeppocketed campaign quickly followed suit. Premier Christy Clark is doing one Wednesday evening for her Vancouver byelection run. Falcon, the reluctant finance minister, is using the same method to ask for options on the harmonized sales tax. In between hockey games over the next week, folks having dinner will be getting
calls with a recorded message inviting them to tell him what he should do with the HST. Falcon admitted to some trepidation before extending such an offer to the general public. What he got at his first one in Surrey was 27,000 people who stayed on the line for an average of 16 minutes, hundreds who queued up to ask questions, and 90 minutes of surprisingly civil discussion with real people. I listened in to the first one hosted by Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom, where 5,900 residents of the Peace River region stuck around for an average 21 minutes to hear why he quit the B.C. Liberals over the HST, and then went back. That region and East Kootenay will be the toughest sell for the B.C. government’s mail-in referendum in June. There were annoyed people. One man called it the “ripoff tax” that applies to groceries. Lekstrom politely noted that basic groceries are exempt from GST and HST. A farmer said it’s on top of the carbon tax, which falls harder on people who put up with cold weather and long driving distances. Another said crossborder shopping to Alberta has become even more popular.
It was refreshing to hear real people describe their situations and concerns. Most had apparently spent little time poring over media accounts of the HST, but unlike the stale and spin-heavy debate that resumed in the B.C. legislature last week, they were direct, polite
...the breakout technology for public engagement turns out to be huge conference calls on the old landline telephone. and willing to listen. Falcon reported a similar experience after 90 minutes of questions in Surrey. Suggestions included dropping the HST by a point (estimated cost $850 million) and offering more exemptions, on things like gym memberships or bike helmets. Hundreds of people didn’t get to ask their questions, partly because the politi-
cians took up too much time with introductions and smooth talk like “that’s a great question!” The patient callers were asked to leave messages for follow-up. I live-blogged the event on Twitter, including a brief debate with former NDP MLA David Schreck about the fairness of these town halls. Schreck said there should be equal time for a critic of the HST, otherwise it’s just government propaganda. Judging by the NDP’s latest line of questioning, town hall participants aren’t missing much. Their big point in the legislature was that if the HST is rejected, low-income people would still get the GST credit. Yes, and the sun will continue to rise, but poor people will still lose a significant redistribution of income. You’ll hear a lot about the HST in the next few weeks, with government and business advertising the merits of keeping it, and Bill Vander Zalm’s FightHST organization spending $250,000 of public money to continue its campaign of fear and ignorance. You could do worse than participating in one of these telephone town halls. Twitter.com/tomfletcherbc

letters
Be more compassionate, and stop judging I am writing in response to the April 23 letter, “Disability may not be visible” I must say that I was angered when I read this letter, as I too have a disability that may not be visible to others. I have arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, tendinitis in most of my joints, glaucoma, and diseased bladder that I have surgery on every four to five months, for the past 10 years. I get injections in my joints for my pain every three months by a specialist, also for the past 10 years. These are some of my disabilities. I have good days and bad days. I cannot carry grocery bags for any length of time. I too, have been yelled at, called a cheat , a liar, sworn at. I have been blocked in my parking spot so I could not move. Once I pulled into a spot and I had not even gotten out of my car, when an old man pounded on my window,
scaring me half to death, yelling at me, continuing to pound on my window, using the “f ” word at me. I thought the older generation had more class than that. All because I don’t look like I have a disability. How dare you! Do all of you people understand that you have to apply for a permit, you have to qualify. Your disability has to be severe enough. You and your physician have to fill out forms – your doctor has to be honest. When I read the article in response, at first it sounded OK, right up until this person said, “A person who is still ambulatory no matter the difficulty, should never take a wheelchair space unless there are several more.” Who gives you the right to say who should use a parking space, depending on the severity of the disability? No parent should have to carry their child who has a disability – how cruel of a statement. You are acting worse than the offenders who bully us
people who have permits. You should give these parents and child a break. It must be hard enough caring for a child with muscular dystrophy, and for the child who is living with the disability of this horrible disease, which one day, probably will put him in a chair. This boy is trying to keep his independence as long as he can. Your response is to take it away. Or is it that your husband’s disability, in your opinion, is far more severe and everyone should move out of the way for you, even if one has a permit? I don’t think so! Sorry to tell you, lady, your husband isn’t the only person in this world who is disabled. Maybe you should consider being more compassionate to others, and stop judging! D.Salter
National voter turnout was a disappointment
As a first time voter I was really excited to go to the polling station May 2. I’ve waited my whole life to turn 18 so I could have a voice in a election. But after watching the election results this year, I cannot express the disappointment on the voter turnout. Fifty-eight per cent is the lowest in Canada’s history. It does not take much effort to drive, walk, bike or bus to your designated
polling station. Laziness is no excuse. For those who did not know who to vote for or knew nothing about what was going on during the elections, you could have easily researched it. This generation has so many resources. You can easily look up stuff on the Internet about a political party’s ideologies and the plans of the candidates. People should take an interest in politics. It affects everyone from how much you earn in your job, to educa-
tion. Politicians really need to find a way to engage Canadians to vote, especially the youth today. They need to speak the youth’s language and show that politics can be interesting and fun. So those who did not vote this past election, I really feel that you don’t have the right to complain. Voting is a time to really voice your opinion, and 42 per cent of the voting population did not do that.
Furniture
Many people around the world would do anything to be able to vote. Just remember that one vote can make a huge difference and is disappoints me that people just don’t care. Maria Gabor-Martinez
Editor’s note: Elections Canada reports voter turnout in this election as 61.4 per cent, which is slightly higher than the historic low of 58.8 per cent in 2008.

proposed the idea to council on Monday, saying approximately $2 million in positive economic impact could come to the community if the bid is approved. “An economic impact
study was performed on the Richmond games (2009) and it showed a significant gain,” said Taylor. He explained the organizers put the bids out two years at a time, and if accepted,
Abbotsford would host either 2013 or 2014. As part of the bid, Taylor said a cash donation of $80,000 and in-kind donation of $60,000 should be made available if Abbotsford is accepted.

The BC Seniors Games Society provides event management services and $85,000 in provincial funding to the host city as well. Abbotsford Mayor George Peary said he has some “insight into these games,” as Abbotsford hosted them in 2006. “These seniors are going out, having fun and participating – and good for them for doing so,” said Peary. The deadline to apply is June 30.
Transit wants public input The Transit Future Bus rolled into Abbotsford last week. The 40-foot unit will tour Abbotsford and Mission until May 15, seeking input to help shape the 25-year Transit Future plan for the region. The plan is being designed to meet the needs of the public and improve transit options in the coming years. The bus, outfitted with local transit information, provides opportunity for the public to leave feedback by completing surveys, discussing issues and even playing a computer game – called The Game Plan – to express ideas. “In order to increase ridership in the next 25 years, we must continue to work toward our goal of making transit more simple, direct and frequent,” said Manuel Achadinha, president and CEO of BC Transit. Achadinha said it isn’t enough to get feedback from people who ride the bus, he wants non-riders comments as well. “We need to know why they don’t use transit and what it will take to get them to use it.” For information on the Transit Future Plan and to give input online, visit the BC Transit website at www.bctransit.com/ transitfuture.

Following a supportive response, Harskamp is gearing up for the public’s reaction next week. “It all starts on a warm spring evening,” she said of the 1910 English drama/ comedy. English comedy From A14
Sir Wi l l i a m explains how he came to write his most famous piece – Pirates of Penzance. He continues to narrate the plots of several operas, which mirror the lives of numerous society members. The storyline was devised by FVS president Tony Roper, and suggested to Harskamp. She filled out the tale starting with the characters, which include a lawyer, a town solicitor, young lovers and a spinster. “It’s very much an English drawing room drama and comedy,” said Harskamp. Fifteen years of theatre experience helped Harskamp during the writing process, which lasted from May to September of last year. While she had to research the costumes and history of Sir William, her love for Jane Austin books helped her round out the play. As an actress, Harskamp wrote herself a part, but ended up awarding it to someone who gave a brilliant audition. Opting out of the production was a good decision, she said, as it would have simply been too much work. “This totally makes me appreciate the acting and the people who have been directing me for all these years.” So far, it’s been an amazing experience to watch the play unfold on the stage. “It was even more than I had anticipated, because the actors have taken the characters and made them their own,” said Harskamp. “It’s been a thrill to watch it evolve and take shape.” She looks forward to watching the show from the audience, where she’ll be trying not to mouth the words. Stranded at Westcliffe will run from Wednesday, May 11 to Saturday, May 14 at Matsqui C e n t e n n i a l Auditorium, 32315 South Fraser Way. Shows take place at 7:30 p.m. each evening
with an additional matinee at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are $18 for students and seniors and $22 for adults. Abbotsford Homeowners Want to Know The Value of Their Home, But Are Afraid to Ask! Abbotsford – A hassle-free service allows homeowners to receive up to date real estate market information speciÀc to their home without having to meet with a real estate agent. Some homeowners are reluctant to meet with a realtor as they may only be in the early stages of planning a move or may not yet know if they will move. “Should we sell or stay? How much equity do we actually have?” Often these questions cannot be answered without knowing the current value of your home. Determining the value of your home is based largely on comparing your home to similar homes that have recently sold. This comparative approach should consider several factors – features of each home, location, neighbourhood, length of time on the market, etc. However, access to this type of information is generally re-
served for the real estate agents and their clients. This free service provides each homeowner with a Real Estate Market Update speciÀc to their property. This update includes detailed sales information of similar homes that have recently sold within the homeowner’s area, as well as the current listings. This data includes a photograph of each home, asking prices and selling prices, the number of days on the market, price reductions and a complete description of each home. To have a free Market Update sent to you, specially tailored for your home, call this 24 hour free recorded message at 1-800-251-4944, enter extension #4811. This hassle free, no obligation service is provided by Rod Poole of Landmark Realty Corp. You may also call Rod’s ofÀce directly at 604-309-6068.

Boychuk thrilled to play for WHL championship Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
With the Portland Winterhawks and the Kootenay Ice squaring off for the Western Hockey League title, Abbotsford hockey fans know one thing for sure – at least one local prospect will advance to the Memorial Cup. On one side is Kootenay starting goalie Nathan Lieuwen, whose team clinched a spot in the WHL final last week on the heels on an 11-game playoff winning streak. On the other is Riley Boychuk, who helped Portland finish off a six-game series win over the Spokane Chiefs on Monday in the Western Conference final. Five years ago, Boychuk and Lieuwen were teammates on a terrific Abbotsford bantam AAA Hawks squad which won the Western Canadian championship. Now, they find themselves cast as foes. “It’s pretty special – I’m looking forward to it, and I’m sure he is too,” Boychuk said. The Winterhawks’ run to the WHL final has been extremely
Portland Winterhawks file photo
Riley Boychuk of the Portland Winterhawks (left), pictured in action against the Seattle Thunderbirds, is off to the WHL final. rewarding for Boychuk, who has been with the franchise through some pretty lean years. Portland made him the 10th overall pick in the 2006 bantam draft, and his first full season with the team (2007-08) was a nightmare. Double hip surgery limited Boychuk to just five games, and the Winterhawks finished dead last in the WHL with just 11 victories. They weren’t
much better the following season, with 19 wins. The situation began to turn around when Calgary businessman Bill Gallacher bought the franchise in October 2008. He installed head coach/GM Mike Johnston, who has built a starstudded roster headlined by top-five NHL draft picks Ryan Johansen (Columbus Blue Jackets) and Nino Neiderreiter
(New York Islanders). Boychuk, a 20-year-old forward, was a seventh-round draft choice by the Buffalo Sabres last summer. “Our team’s taken a big leap forward,” he enthused. “I never imagined we’d be going to the league finals, and possibly the Memorial Cup. It’s a once-in-alifetime opportunity.” For more coverage, visit abbynews.com
New-look Rebels ready to roll Dan KINVIG
Abbotsford News
As the new head coach of the Valley Rebels, Jim Nishiyama must figure out how to fill the void left by the retirement of the team's top scoring threat. You might call it a self-inflicted wound. Nishiyama himself was the Rebels' highest-scoring player last season, piling up 74 points (32 goals, 42 assists) in 16 West Coast Senior Lacrosse
Association (WCSLA) games. But at the age of 41, he's decided to exchange his stick for a clipboard. "The body's getting old," Nishiyama explained with a chuckle. "I know in my mind I can still play, but waking up in the morning with your arm and your hand starting to go numb, it's just too many years of getting beaten up. It was time." Nishiyama is confident the new-look Rebels roster won't
have any trouble generating offence without him. The Abbotsford squad has added seven new players, and the buzz around the WCSLA is that the Rebels have the talent to contend for the league title. Bryan Poole, acquired late last season in a trade with the Ladner Pioneers, figures to be among the offensive leaders. He racked up 22 points (nine goals, 13 assists) in just four games with the Rebels last season.
Other key additions include Tommy Tran, a trade pick-up from the Royal City Capitals, and Ryan Hall, who returns to the Valley lineup after a oneyear absence. They join a solid veteran core led by the likes of Shaun McRae and Geordie Wells. Q The Rebels host their home opener on Friday at MSA Arena against Royal City at 8 p.m. For a full schedule, visit wcsla.ca.

Sports
In Brief Q The Yale Lions locked up a berth to the provincial AAA senior boys rugby championships on Tuesday, edging the Earl Marriott Mariners 27-24 in South Surrey. The Mariners came in ranked No. 7 in B.C., but the No. 8-ranked Lions pulled off a modest upset to boost their record to 4-0 in Fraser Valley Elite League play. Christian Styles (2) and Max Goldman scored tries for Yale, while Akash Deo booted two penalty kicks and three converts. Q Abbotsford pro Josh Taylor crushed the field at the Vancouver Golf Tour’s Royalwood Classic in Chilliwack on Tuesday. Taylor – the older brother of former world No. 1-ranked amateur Nick Taylor – shot a seven-under 65 to finish five strokes clear of fellow Abbotsford native Brett Webster and Isaac Weintraub, who tied for second. Q The junior golf program at Ledgeview Golf and Country Club begins its spring season this week. Practices for athletes aged 13-18 run on Tuesday afternoons from May 10 to June 14. Golfers aged 5-12 practice on Saturdays from May 7 to May 28. To register or for more information, call 1-855-259-8993. Q Former World Karate Federation kumite champion Yorihisa Uchida is hosting a series of seminars in conjunction with Abbotsford’s Shotokan Karate Dojo this week. The Japanese karate expert will be at Robert Bateman Secondary for evening sessions on May 6, 9 and 10. For more information, call 604853-3849 or email satokichi@ shaw.ca.
