Arlene Austin and Claudette Wiebe sit together at a local Tim Horton’s. They grasp hands when Austin, 72, describes their friendship as “perfect.” Six years ago, the pair met through the Friendly Visiting Program facilitated through Seniors Healthy Aging Resource Environment Society (SHARES). Before the match, Wiebe, 71, often stayed within her Abbotsford home. Shy, and without transportation, weeks would go by in which she did not see anyone. “She’s changed me so much,” Wiebe says. “I didn’t speak to people, my head was down.” Continued on A7

Abbotsford Coun. Lynne Harris attended her final public council meeting on Monday night. The political veteran chose not to seek re-election this year, giving up her seat on council which was won by newcomer Henry Braun. Harris told the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium crowd, including several members of her family who came to watch, that it was “fitting” Braun take her spot, considering when she first moved to Abbotsford, Braun was her neighbour. “We’re neighbours, we’ve been friends for an enormously long time and I can’t think of a finer individual to sit in my chair.” It was an emotional farewell for Harris, who served nine years on council and 15 years as a school trustee. “I obviously made the decision to end my career as a politician. I thought very long and hard about
it and I knew I would be very emotional about it and I would miss it greatly. But it was time to strike and it was a good decision ... Tonight is very difficult,” said Harris. She called council a team and while there are some challenges ahead, her colleagues will continue to work for the city. “We all strive to be better and to represent you better,” said Harrris. She worked on council with three different mayors and expressed regrets that outgoing Mayor George Peary was not at the final meeting. “I’m very sorry George isn’t here tonight, but I think we can understand, under the circumstances ... I chose to leave and how difficult is it for me to leave and to be here tonight. So you can imagine for him it would be very difficult.” Harris is looking forward to spending more time with her family.

Seniors’ program needs volunteers From A1
Now, during their weekly visit, Austin introduces Wiebe to her friends. “She laughs and giggles,” Austin says. The women go grocery shopping on Wednesdays, after which they visit the food court in the mall, drinking root beer and talking about their lives. Currently, Austin is often still the only person that Wiebe sees during the week, with her son living in Chilliwack and working long hours. Austin covers her face in disbelief when she explains that Wiebe now enjoys reading. After years of Austin encouraging her to “get her nose into some of the books on her shelf,” Wiebe exclaims that she reads five or six hours a day.
As a retired nurse, Austin feels like she is still contributing to society, just in another way. During her 16 years as a volunteer, she has had seven clients and is still in contact with her first, Sandra Mix, now in her 90s. “I go over to feed her now, because that is the level she is now at,” Austin says. For seniors such as Wiebe and Mix, the friendship becomes a lifeline, says Sar Robson, executive director for SHARES. The visitor gets to know the senior and can tell if there is something wrong with their health. Robson and the volunteer then can arrange for further support if necessary, notifying the family or emergency services. The program currently aids 30 seniors, and enlists 25 volun-
teers, some of whom have more than one client. “We hope that we are making a dent in the community. But with Abbotsford having one of the fastest-growing seniors populations, we can’t keep up,” she said, noting that she receives phone calls from people across the country, who are seeking companions for their parents living in town. Currently, there are 10 seniors on the program’s waiting list. With the Christmas season nearing, Robson hopes that more volunteers come forward. Many seniors are uncomfortable driving in winter weather, or have health conditions that confine them to their homes, and are unable to experience the festivities. “During Christmas
time, the seniors tend to reflect a lot. It’s a very important time for us,” Robson said. Volunteers are required to make a one-
year commitment to the program, giving time for training and matching the visitor with the right senior, so that a genuine
friendship develops. “I call her my angel,” Wiebe says. SHARES is an independent charity organization and has
offered the Friendly Visiting Program since 1989. To volunteer or for more information call 604854-1733.

Leaving it up to others The civic election is over, which means – as those familiar with politics recognize well – the venerable hobby of grousing can now begin. It’s a given that, as soon as results are known, some will complain it was a bad day for democracy that this team or that person was elected over other options. Or that low voter turnout means the victors don’t have the confidence of the electorate. In the Abbotsford polls, Mayor George Peary lost his seat, while all the incumbents were returned. Clearly, voters were expressing dissatisfaction, but only took one step to initiate change in their civic government. Aside from a new mayor, and one councillor, the same council serves, and that has generated some public criticism and frustration. Yet the polling results in Abbotsford were created not simply by those who voted for the returning councillors, but by all those who didn’t vote
against. One has to wonder what the picture would look like if more people had cast ballots. Abbotsford actually improved in terms of voter turnout this year, with nearly 40 per cent of the electorate going to the polls, compared to 33 per cent in 2008, and above the paltry provincial average of 29 per cent. The P3 water project was soundly defeated, and it’s unlikely that outcome would have changed dramatically with greater turnout. Nevertheless, it is telling – and troublesome – that more than 50,000 residents of this city with the right to vote didn’t bother to exercise it. By not completing a ballot, nonvoters did, in essence, cast their vote – in favour of whatever occurred. However pleased or displeased one is by the results, the real disservice to democracy was done on election day by the majority who left it up to others to make decisions for them.
Chilly climate for B.C. carbon plan Tom
Fletcher
B.C. Views B.C.’s carbon emission trading plan died last week at the age of four. No service was announced. The end came as the B.C. capital hosted politicians from neighbouring U.S. states and western provinces for their annual economic conference. Washington, Oregon, Montana, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico followed through with plans to withdraw from the Western Climate Initiative, leaving California, B.C., and theoretically Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec to come up with a trading system to put further costs on greenhouse gas emissions. Fossil fuel kingpins Alberta and Saskatchewan wanted nothing to do with the WCI from the beginning, when it set a goal of 15 per cent reduction in emissions by 2020. This leaves B.C. as the only jurisdiction in North America with a carbon tax,
and an emission reduction target twice as ambitious – 33 per cent by 2020. Because of that tax, all B.C.’s border states and provinces have an economic advantage for emitting industries. And with natural gas development booming and population growing, B.C.’s emissions continue upward. Industry representatives gave the legislature finance committee the view from ground level. Take farming. “None of our competitors have a carbon tax,” Garnet Etsell of the B.C. Agriculture Council told the committee’s Chilliwack hearing. “This has cost us, to date, with the last increase, $45 million a year. With the increase that’s anticipated in 2012, that’ll be $65 million. Keep in mind that the agriculture industry last year had a cumulative net loss of $80 million.” B.C.’s biggest greenhouse gas emitters are the petroleum and cement manufacturing industries. They only pay the tax on fuel while significant process emissions are tax-exempt. But even that is stimulating demand for cement imported from outside B.C., This not only hurts domestic producers, it adds emissions via trucking or rail shipping. Then there is B.C.’s “carbon neutral public sector,” where provincial and local
governments are forced to buy carbon offsets. The Pacific Carbon Trust then funds emission-reduction projects for big emitters such as gas plants in the northeast. So five years on, that’s the upshot of Gordon Campbell’s lofty goal to lead the world in climate action. We’re hurting our own agriculture and manufacturing, and
It’s no wonder the finance committee has recommended major changes. transferring scarce funds from hospitals, senior care homes and schools to subsidize profitable energy corporations. And emissions are still rising. It’s no wonder the finance committee has recommended major changes to Finance Minister Kevin Falcon. He should cap the carbon tax at the 2012 rate. He should “address the inequity for B.C. cement producers,” and also “consider immediate carbon tax exclusions for agriculture, including the greenhouse sector,
and public institutions.” Falcon allowed last week that B.C.’s competitive position must be considered, now that U.S. President Barack Obama has reversed himself on the need for an emission trading system that would have levelled the North American playing field. Look for changes when Falcon tables his first budget in February. Does this mean B.C.’s climate strategy is dead? No. Delegates from U.S. states and Alberta gathered in front of the legislature to kick the tires on B.C.’s newest weapon, natural gas-powered vehicles. Garbage trucks, school buses and milk truck fleets have switched from diesel to natural gas, and thanks to its abundance and low price, they’re saving 50 per cent on fuel bills. The trucks and buses eliminate particulate pollution and reduce carbon emissions by 30 per cent compared to gasoline or diesel. Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom says natural gas is being considered for BC Ferries, the largest publicsector emissions source of all, which is exempt from the carbon neutrality rule. Punish or help both parties in prostitution
I am writing in response to the letter written by Sarah Kamp on Nov. 1, in regards to her thoughts on sending the men to prison who participate in prostitution by paying for sex. Kamp states that women engage in prostitution due to despair and addiction. This is a fallacy. Surely these are conditions that have contributed to their becoming a prostitute, however many people have faced despair and addiction
and come out of it without resorting to prostitution. Kamp also writes that it is because of these conditions (addiction and despair) that we should not be sending these women to prison, rather offer them help to get out of prostitution and send the johns to prison instead. She ignores the fact that some of these men may require counseling or some form of social outreach to help them
deal with the life situations that brought them to the point of paying for sex to get whatever gratifications they do from it. Kamp doesn’t recognize that sending these men to jail for long periods of time would cost a large amount of taxpayer money and further crowd the already overcrowded provincial prisons. She also fails to acknowledge the fact that in order for these women to get out of prostitution they have
Danger and tragedy of abortion Every year millions of women are faced with the decision to keep or to kill the baby that they are carrying. About 42 million abortions occur each year, and 20 million of these are performed unsafely, because those who perform them are untrained or outside of a medical environment. Almost all abortions are paid by people like us, taxpayers.
I think that abortion is appalling and cruel because you are killing the life of an innocent child. The worst part of all is that abortion is free for the person aborting and we citizens have to pay for the procedure. We as a country have to open our eyes and see the great danger and tragedy of this troubling issue. Shannon Driegen Grade 9
to be ready and willing to accept the help that is being offered to them, when all the while the prostitutes who are not accepting help are having customers being put behind bars. The customers being put behind bars are main sources of income for them and in consequence these women will not be making enough money to survive and
possibly have to look for other illegal ways to make income. There are two parties involved in the act of prostitution. Laws should not be made that punish one party involved while taking pity on the other, making them out to be victims. If a law is to be made both parties need to be punished equally for the act, and if other options such
as social outreach programs are offered, then they too in turn
need to be offered to both parties. Greg Spence

This Saturday, Victoria Bonar will don costumes for her roles of party adult, snowflake, flower, Spanish dancer, and solo performance of Rose, in the Royal City Youth Ballet’s production of the Nutcracker. With the company for over eight years, Bonar is excited to take to the stage at the Abbotsford Arts Centre, at 2329 Crescent Way. It is a moment that most dancers long for but are often unable to achieve. The RCYB company was created to bridge the gap between dance schools and professional companies, allowing dancers to perform at a high level with elaborate outfits, sets
and lighting. Bonar currently teaches at Xtreme Talent and studies ballet at the Lower Mainland Academy of Classical Ballet. The Nutcracker features characters such as the magical soldiers, sugar plum fairy and an army of mice. There may even be a growing Christmas tree. The show plays on Nov, 26, with its only performance at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the Act Theatre in Maple Ridge, 11944 Haney Place, online at www.theactmapleridge.org, or by phone 604-476-2787. Abbotsford’s Travis Rankin will be among the members of Cupla at the release of their debut CD “Letters Home” this Saturday at the Troubadour Club in Langley, at 20299 Industrial Ave. Their first single, “I’m going,” was available for download Nov. 1 on iTunes. Shortly after, the band came in fourth on CFOX’s Band Of The Month chart. They sound like an old fashioned rock band, with a heart, the band says, with an Irish influence as well. Twin brothers Bobby and Billy McAloney are third-generation Canadians, but have strong Celtic roots, demonstrated with the Irish name Cupla. Other members include Billy’s wife Trish on vocals, Ken Li on lead guitar and Rankin on bass. The show happens Nov. 26 at 8:00 p.m., where Cupla will join a line up including The Niche, Whisky Jack and Kristen Karma. For more information call the Troubadour at 604-530-8888..

A Canadian icon Local Matt Good returns for Mission concert on Friday
Adrian MACNAIR Black Press
The phrase “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” doesn’t apply to Matthew Good. Over his almost two-decade career, Good has continually pushed forward into uncharted territories, mapping new musical landscapes. His newest release, Lights Of Endangered Species, takes Good into the unfamiliar, displaying arrangements that are a distinct departure from the likes of Born Losers and Last Parade. Stark and passionate best describe his latest effort, and despite its differences the record still resonates with his fans. Matthew Good formed the Canadian alternative rock band of the same name that existed from 1993 to 2002. It became one of Canada’s most successful rock bands of the ‘90s, nominated for a Juno Award in 1998 for Best New Group and winning the award for Group of the Year in 2000. The band dissolved in 2002 but Good pursued a successful solo career having released, Avalanche (2003), White Light Rock & Roll Review (2004), In a Coma (2005), Hospital Music (2007) and Vancouver (2009). Good was born in Burnaby, grew

up in Coquitlam, and has lived in various suburbs of Vancouver throughout his life. He played Abbotsford two years ago. Joining Good on a 37-date, crossCanada tour this fall is Vancouver’s Daniel Wesley. Wesley is promoting his fifth studio album, Easy Livin’ (604 Records/Universal Music). Good and Wesley play live at the Clarke Theatre in Mission, at 33700 Prentis Ave., tomorrow (Friday), Nov. 25. Tickets are available for $42.50 at all Ticketmaster locations, by phone 1-885-985-5000 or online at www.ticketmaster.ca.

Abbotsford …… It’s my home town and a community that I am proud to be a part of. Living your entire life in one town gives you a different perspective. You want to make your town better, you want to make a difference. I have taken that philosophy and applied it to all areas of my life. Whether it be on the executive of Abbotsford Baseball or the Abbotsford Cardinals, coaching minor sports, membership at Ross Road Community Church, or raising my 3 wonderful boys with my lovely wife, I strive to do my best. The same holds true for the 16 years I have spent selling Real Estate. My goal is to offer every client a Real Estate experience that they will not forget and that they will tell others about. Housing evolution driving prices Billions spent in new construction, renovation, and infill over the past decade have contributed to a serious upswing in the calibre of Canada’s housing stock, propping up residential average price in the country’s major centres, according to a report released recently by Re/Max. Since 2000, the value of a Canadian home has doubled, rising from $163,951 to $339,030 in 2010. Nowhere has the upswing been better captured than in both the value of residential building permits issued nationally between 2000 and 2010 – at $340 billion – and the estimated $450 billion spent in renovation. The impact of these two forces alone has fuelled the Canadian residential real estate market – as well as the construction industry – for more than 10 years. As a result, investment in Canada’s housing stock is at an all-time high. Higher quality housing translated into extraordinary price appreciation across the country – with 62 per cent (10 markets) experiencing increases in excess of 100 per cent since 2000. “Revitalization, renovation and new construction have been largely underestimated in terms of overall impact on rising average price,” says Elton Ash, regional executive vice-president, Re/Max of Western Canada. “Yet, outside of supply and demand, these

I have lived in Abbotsford most of my life and have seen it grow from a small town to a bustling city. This is a great place to live and an excellent time to invest in Abbotsford’s future. I have been a full time Realtor for the last eleven years selling both Residential and Commercial Real Estate. One of the areas that I specialize in is buying and selling revenue properties including owning a Mobile Home Park for several years. Call me to discuss the advantages of buying a Mobile Home Park versus other types of real estate investments .I can show you how you can use the equity in your present home for investment real estate . Whether it is buying or selling a home or an investment property, I would be honored to assist you in attaining your goals.

have been among the foremost variables influencing real estate values. The overall result is tremendously positive for real estate and our major centres – and there’s much more to come.” The report found that the unprecedented sum funneled into housing has effectively changed the landscape of Canada’s major centres. New home construction has advanced suburban sprawl, giving rise to new sought-after pockets in virtually every centre across the board. Infill continues to redefine neighbourhoods, particularly in areas where the value of existing structures have not kept pace with escalating land values. Bungalows on large lots are prime targets, making way for custom builds that transform working-class subdivisions of yesteryear into up-and-coming upperend pockets. Infill is also maximizing land potential, often replacing one, two or several tired structures with a block of townhomes or mixed-use residential, even high-rise apartments. Population growth has been a key factor making housing evolution possible. Since 2000, Canada’s population has experienced double-digit growth of 11 per cent. By 2031, over 42 million people are expected to call Canada home.

The Mennonite Educational Institute senior boys volleyball team won the latest clash in one of the great rivalries in B.C. high school sports, edging the Langley Christian Lightning in the Fraser Valley AA championship game last Friday. Knights off to B.C.’s From A19
MEI upset an undefeated LCS squad in the provincial title game. The next two years, the Eagles beat the Lightning in the B.C. semis. This season, the two teams split their regular season match-ups – Langley Christian winning in mid-October, and MEI prevailing on Nov. 9. Both of those games were fiveset thrillers, and it stands to reason that another chapter in the feud will be written at the provincial championships, which run Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 at UBC-Okanagan in Kelowna. MEI will be the No. 1 seed, Langley Christian No. 2. Making the rivalry particularly delicious these days is the fact that Stel, the Eagles’ head coach the past two years, is a Langley Christian grad, class of 2001. “It’s an old rivalry, and it was just kind of starting back then – we (LCS) were a fairly new school at that point, and MEI wasn’t as focused on volley-
ball as they are now,” Stel recalled. “For years now, we’ve both been powerhouse volleyball schools, and you always know you have to play your A game to beat them. “There’s always that desire to play well and coach well against your old high school.” The Eagles had opened the Fraser
Valleys with a three-set win over Abbotsford Christian in the semifinals last Thursday. The Knights rebounded from that defeat to knock off Surrey Christian in the bronze medal game and claim the Valley’s third and final provincial berth. Abby Christian will be seeded No. 5 at the B.C.’s.

“It was a big hassle,” Mouat coach Denis Kelly said, reflecting on the scheduling odyssey. “But we’re kind of peaking right now, defensively especially. We’re shutting people down, while trying to maintain our offence.” Nathan Henczel spearheaded the defensive charge – the senior defensive back made two interceptions in the first quarter, including one in the end zone. Linebacker Jake Heathcote also had a big game, racking up 13 tackles in limited playing time, as the Hawks’ starters sat for most of the second half. Quarterback Daniel Markin threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another. Two of his scoring strikes went to Deion Bain, while Maleek Irons caught the other. Devin Logan, Gary Lumeka and Mario
Narte also rushed for majors, as the No. 2-ranked Hawks punched their ticket to meet the No. 3 Vancouver College Fighting Irish in the AAA semifinals. That game goes on Saturday evening at UBC, though the exact kickoff time has yet to be set. Mouat beat Van College 42-14 back on Oct. 1, but Kelly said it was closer than the score indicated. “They’ve got a highly skilled and huge team,” Kelly said. “They’re very happy to play us, because they want to show that game was not a true indication of their strength.” On Monday, the Hawks had three players named to the AAA all-province team – Logan, Heathcote, and Bain. Additionally, Markin was awarded a $1,000 scholarship that recognizes football ability, academics, and community service.
