A new poll shows B.C. drivers overwhelmingly believe talking or texting behind the wheel on a mobile phone is extremely dangerous. Yet 16 per cent admit talking recently on a handheld phone and nine per cent admit they texted or emailed while driving. The Ipsos Reid survey conducted for ICBC found 87 per cent of respondents believe texting or emailing while driving is one of the riskiest behaviours on the road and 50 per cent believe talking on a handheld phone is as risky as drunk driving. The BCSPEA has said the demands would amount to an additional $2.2 billion each year. The issues are being decided on a provincial level, with more specific local matters to be determined later. Living in the real world Before taking the B.C. Teachers’ Federation to task for its stratospheric contract demands, the following should be acknowledged. The value and importance of teachers is indisputable. The great majority are passionate educators, dedicated to turning out well-balanced young people ready to face the challenges before them. Now enter the BCTF bargaining position, and reality rapidly fades. Among the demands currently on the table are wage increases – undeﬁned as yet, but ostensibly on par with the highest paid teachers in the country, which could translate into as much as 20 per cent salary hikes. Add to that more beneﬁts, including doubling the provision for bereavement leave to 10 days on the death of any friend or relative, and 26 weeks off each year as a fully paid leave to provide compassionate care to any person. The government has said the demands would amount to an additional $2.2 billion each year.

In 2006, teachers endorsed a five-year agreement, which included a rich 16 per cent wage hike. Things were much different then. The global economy hadn’t tanked. It was three years before the B.C. government imposed a zero wage increase mandate on the public service. The province wasn’t running a $45-billion debt. It wasn’t trying to balance the budget after a string of deficits. And taxpayers hadn’t just voted down the HST, incurring a return to the PST that will see a $1.6-billion repayment to Ottawa, and some $3 billion in additional revenue lost in the next few years. In short, this province is in no fiscal position to entertain the BCTF’s fantasies. That’s the real world, and it’s time the BCTF lived in it. Address the issue that impacts students the most – classroom size and composition. That might even garner public support.

‘People’s victory’ means pain ahead Tom

B.C. Views NDP leader Adrian Dix couldn’t contain his glee at the result of the harmonized sales tax referendum. He seemed positively giddy that the provincial budget will forgo $3 billion in revenue over the next few years, and clearly relishes the prospect of getting back to the legislature in October to resume his demands for more spending in every ministry of the B.C. government. He can start soon, standing in passionate solidarity with B.C.’s 40,000 public school teachers as they strike to press their demands for huge increases in salary and beneﬁts that already exceed what most private sector workers will ever see. Bill Vander Zalm was thrilled too, beaming that famous smile as he climbed in his long black Mercedes to resume his comfortable retirement. He never

expected to be able to leave the province in a mess one more time, but fate has been kind to him. He probably still believes he has helped the poor, as he claimed in his nonsensical rants against the HST. This is the “people’s victory” that Dix crowed about. B.C. and the rest of the country are entering a perilous time where retired people outnumber the young, and pension plans – private and public – grow increasingly fragile. And in classic baby-boomer style, our political response is self-centred and unrealistic. An efﬁcient tax system that ends the advantage given to services over goods, while raising revenue to lift up the poorest people, is now a dirty word. Any kind of meaningful tax reform will be politically radioactive for years to come. Resource industries, the movie business and other private sector job generators can now plan for a signiﬁcant B.C. disadvantage in 2013. Ontario can celebrate. Meanwhile, demand for government services to take care of the great grey blob that is my generation can only soar. It’s not just old people outnumbering

the young. I mentioned a while back that Canada has already passed another signiﬁcant milestone. Statistics Canada reported in May on the people fortunate enough to have employer-supported pension plans in addition to government pension. And it turns out that 2010 was the

Author Mark Steyn talks about this problem in relation to the troubles in Europe. When those two “parties” constitute a majority, they can force the govern-

ment to satisfy their demands without regard to economic reality. This is what has happened in Greece. It is very close to happening in other European countries, and today B.C. is a step closer to it. When the verdict came in on the HST referendum, Finance Minister Kevin Falcon talked about going around to consult the public on how to reinstate the provincial sales tax. He vowed that B.C. will somehow still balance its budget in two years, and seemed to leave the door open to some minor modifications of the sales tax system. Premier Christy Clark quickly shut that door. It would be “disrespectful” to do anything other than bring back the post-war PST in all its rustic beauty, with the little boutique exemptions like bicycles and Toyota Priuses that have been attached by politicians over the years. Self-employed business people can now look forward to collecting and remitting two separate taxes again. Confusing ballot I solely blame the cancellation of the HST on the confusing ballot. Who ever uses the word “extinguish” on a ballot. You can walk down any street in Abbotsford and ask anyone walking there what the word “Extinguish” means and more that 50 per cent will tell you they don’t have a clue. The ballot should have been simply, if you want to keep the HST check here and if you want to cancel it check here. The “yes and no” wording also helped confuse the issue. Schlagintweit has two older sisters currently in the midst of big-time university volleyball careers – Sofie with the NCAA’s Arizona State Sun Devils, and Rosie with the UBC Thunderbirds. Jeremy’s older brothers are also elite athletes – Matt was a volleyball all-star at MEI and then at Douglas College, while Nathan, a hockey goalie, led the Kootenay Ice to a WHL title last season and was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in June. “There’s an amazing amount of support,” Lieuwen said, analyzing the benefits of the sporting culture in his family. “Between games (at nationals), I was getting text messages from my brothers and my parents – to keep going hard. They know what it’s like to be there.” “They also help you get there,” Schlagintweit chimed in with a chuckle. “My sisters used to beat volleyballs at me as hard as they could. They made me a player, they made me tough. “I guess I liked volleyball, and they realized it, so they told me I was going to be the best volleyball player around. They would make me play every day.”

When beach volleyball partners Kristof Schlagintweit and Jeremy Lieuwen set the goal of winning a medal at the under-18 national championships, they realized they had their work cut out for them. The Abbotsford duo, after all, were a year younger than most of their competitors at the Canadian championships, held in Toronto last weekend. Schlagintweit and Lieuwen came through with a series of tremendous performances, battling their way to bronze. “We’re ecstatic about it,” Schlagintweit said of the podium finish. “We just went out and had some fun.” Schlagintweit and Lieuwen have a lot in common, beyond their enviable volleyball skills. Both are heading into their senior year of high school – Schlagintweit at Yale Secondary and Lieuwen at Mennonite Educational Institute – and both come from families with more than their share of high-profile athletes.

Schmidt signs with Spartans Spencer Schmidt of Abbotsford has signed on with the Trinity Western University men’s soccer team for the 2011-12 season. The W.J. Mouat Secondary grad is entering his fourth season of eligibility following two years at the University of Washington (20042005) and a year at the University of the Fraser Valley (2007). Schmidt was a standout striker at UFV, tying for second in the Canada West

goal-scoring race with eight, while leading the conference in shots per game (4.14). He was named a CIS all-Canadian following the 2007 campaign, becoming the first UFV player to earn that honour. Schmidt’s younger sister Sophie is a regular with Canada’s senior women’s national team, and Spencer has represented Canada at the U17 level.

Making a difference for generations to come Mennonite Central Committee’s (MCC) annual MCC Festival is held to help assist the lives of those around the world who are infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. This year’s event takes place at Abbotsford’s Tradex, 1190 Cornell St., on Sept. 9 and 10. Through the Generations initiative, MCC is touching the lives of millions by caring for people living with HIV/ AIDS, by supporting children orphaned by the disease, teaching prevention, and addressing the poverty and injustices that perpetuate the spread of the disease.

Each year, thousands descend on Tradex to enjoy food from around the world, listen to great entertainment, find treasures at the craft booths, take part in silent and live auctions, and more. The MCC Festival has something for every generation. Bring your children to take part in the numerous activities set up just for them. Cycling enthusiasts can take part in the Pedaling for Hope cyclathon. Don’t forget to bring your pennies to the Penny Power Booth and see your change make a change in

the world. Another highlight this year is the contribution from Fraserway RV. For the last 20 years, Fraserway RV in Abbotsford has contributed to the MCC Festival by providing a recreational vehicle for the auction, which they are doing again this year. There will be a number of RVs ranging from a truck camper to a travel trailer for the winning bidder to choose from. MCC would like to offer a large thank you to the staff of Fraserway RV for their generosity and for support.
