Questionable quarry City opposed to proposal, says it will fight Adrian MACNAIR Abbotsford News
A proposed seventh rock quarry with two pits spanning 310 acres at the top of Sumas Mountain has infuriated some residents of Abbotsford, city council and the Fraser Valley Regional District. In fact, the city and FVRD only learned about the quarry when a notice of intent to apply for the provincial Crown land was posted in a local newspaper. “That’s a huge oversight on the part of somebody in the ministry of mines,” said Mayor George Peary, adding council voted Monday to instruct staff to prepare a letter to the province registering the “strongest possible objection” to the quarry. The city opposes the quarry for a number of reasons, but ultimately can’t block approval since the land falls in Area G of the FVRD and access is provincially regulated through the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

A rock quarry is being proposed on Sumas Mountain. The red boundaries represent the location of the pits. Sumas Mountain was known as Area H until 2008, when most residential properties were absorbed into the City of Abbotsford. The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource replied to queries by email,
saying they have received 12 responses from the public that “generally oppose the proposal.” The proposal is in the referral process right now, which means various levels of government and the general pub-

lic have until July 12 to voice their objection or support of the quarry. The email also stated the city of Abbotsford and the FRVD have been consulted, but Coun. Patricia Ross said that isn’t true, adding the deadline to respond to the quarry is “impossible.” “Our board meets once a month. Our staff have to have time to review it. They’re absolutely swamped as it is,” she said. Peary said not only would Abbotsford receive no royalties from the mine, the roads would be severely impacted from additional traffic. He said he intends to personally complain to Abbotsford West MLA Mike de Jong on Saturday. The News acquired a copy of the draft management plan, dated Jan. 7, showing Dave Taylor of 266531 BC Ltd., the owner of Westland Tractor Company in Kamloops, as being the applicant. Taylor declined to be interviewed. The quarry would remove 225,000 metric tonnes of decorative and aggregate rock per year for a lifespan of 100 years, and would require construction of a 1,160 metre road to access it. After approval, the quarry Continued on A6
Mail halted: Workers locked out Jeff NAGEL Black Press
Rotating strike action by postal workers at selected cities has turned into a full lockout at all urban centres by Canada Post. The corporation’s decision halts urban mail delivery and could lead Parliament to consider back-to-work legislation as early as next week. “A lockout is the best way to bring a timely resolution to this impasse and force the union to seriously consider the proposals that address the declining mail volumes and the $3.2-billion pension deficit,” Canada Post said in a statement Tuesday. “If we allow the uncertainty created by the rotating strikes to continue, our ability to remain financially self-sufficient and not become a burden on Canadian taxpayers will be in jeopardy.” No new talks are scheduled so far but the union has demanded a meeting with Canada Post’s CEO.
Federal Labour Minister Lisa Raitt told CTV News her staff will reassess the impact to the economy and public interest before contemplating legislating the 48,000 urban postal workers back to work. She indicated Parliament would deal with the Air Canada strike first. Canada Post said the corporation has lost more than $100 million in revenue since the rotating strikes began June 3. Canada Post had already cut service to three days a week in response to shrinking demand as uncertainty from the strike led customers to use competing services or switch to online alternatives. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers said management was “irresponsible” to lock out the workers. “There is now a considerable amount of mail in the system that Continued on A6

SENIOR CYCLIST STRUCK A 70-year-old cyclist escaped with minor injuries after he was hit by a semi truck on Tuesday in Abbotsford at about 5:40 p.m. The man had just begun crossing at a crosswalk, after receiving the signal to go, and was heading west on Maclure Road. The truck driver was heading north on Trethewey and began making a right turn onto Maclure. Const. Ian MacDonald said the driver did not see the cyclist and struck him, sending him under the vehicle but missing the wheels. The cyclist was taken by ambulance to hospital, where he was recovering yesterday from bruises, abrasions, and some swelling to his back and hip.
PUBLIC TO HAVE SAY ON SLOTS A public hearing will be held later this summer to discuss the addition of slot machines to Chances Abbotsford. The decision to hold a public hearing was made at the city council meeting on Monday afternoon. The meeting is tentatively slated for July 11. However, if the postal strike is ongoing, it will likely be Aug. 8, said Mayor Peary. Located at 30835 Peardonville Rd., Chances wants to expand the number of slot machines to the maximum number permitted by the BC Lottery Corporation. Currently the facility has 125 machines, but has indicated it needs 180 to meet public demand. A liquor primary licence has also been put forward. However it is being treated as a separate application and will have its own public hearing.

could be operational within four months. Although the site is on provincial Crown land, Sumas Mountain is within the traditional territory of Sumas First Nation, who have previously resisted rock quarries on the mountain. In March 2008 the Sumas band blockaded Lower Sumas Mountain Road to mining trucks in protest of some 200 trucks travelling through their territory every day. The Ministry of Transportation eventually built a bypass on Atkinson Road so trucks could avoid the reserve. In April 2003 the band blocked the road in protest of the sixth, and last, mine to be granted approval on Sumas Mountain. Although the Sumas First Nation was unavailable for comment, elder Ray Silver said he didn’t think the band was aware of the proposal. “We’ll be 199 per cent against it. They’ve already destroyed the hell right out of the mountain, he said, adding the Sumas has land claims pending on the mountain already. According to the Draft Management Plan, the quarry has been nearly five years in planning. On Dec. 22, 2006, a letter was sent to Sumas Chief Dalton Silver discussing a royalty offer, and was followed up by a Protocol Agreement which did not get signed. There were two subsequent meetings between Dave Taylor and Chief Silver, but there has been no contact between either party since August 2009. Ross said a quarry would completely destroy plans to convert Sumas Mountain to more recreational green space.
will not be delivered, the union said in a statement. “Canada Post is reneging on its responsibility to the public to deliver mail that has been paid for. We committed to deliver pension and social assistance cheques and we intend to fulfil that commitment. The union had asked for wage hikes of 3.3 per cent in the first year and 2.75 per cent in each of the next three years. Canada Post offered
a four-year contract lifting pay 1.9 per cent in each of the first three years and 2.0 per cent in the fourth. Postal workers currently make at least $23 an hour. However Canada Post wanted the starting wage for new hires to begin at $19 per hour. Canada Post says it must address labour costs as a result of a 17 per cent drop in lettermail business since 2006 due to a rise in online bill payments and other electronic communications.

Landlord feels ‘violated’ Five-month sentence Calls for stricter bylaws for grow-op renters Ashley WRAY Abbotsford News
An Abbotsford resident said he feels violated and unprotected after discovering a renter used one of his properties for a marijuana grow-op – leaving him to clean up the mess and foot the bill. Sukhvinder Kahlon, a local berry farmer, believes better bylaws need to be implemented to protect landlords and hold criminals accountable. After police raided the home at 33848 Marshall Rd. at the end of March, Kahlon received a bill for $2,300 in policing fees, which he feels he shouldn’t have to pay. He said he also has to cover another $6,200 in expenses ranging from restoration to builder inspection fees. “The property owners are the victims of growops,” said Kahlon, who presented his case to council on Monday afternoon. “It’s guilt by association.” Kahlon said he will pay the bill, but still wants a bylaw in place where landlords only have to pay if they are found guilty in connection to the grow-op. Otherwise, the tenants should pay the fees. Kahlon said he tried contacting the tenants, but they never responded. He’s still unclear whether they were arrested. He also suggested a registry listing the names of those who have been busted in grow-ops, providing landlords with a better way to check their tenants. In this case, Kahlon had the tenants fill out an application form before moving in last February. “You can only do so much due diligence,” he said. “At one time a handshake deal with people
Sukhvinder Kahlon believes better bylaws are needed to protect landlords. would be good enough, when people were honest and decent. But these guys are smarter than us – they put the time and work in and they know the system better than us.” Following the raid, Kahlon walked through the house to see the condition it was in, which included unsafe electrical wiring and circuits added without a permit. “I felt violated,” he said. “It’s a trust you put into people, if you’re renting it for people to live in. It really hurts you and your pride.” While Kahlon has heard of landlords doing criminal checks, he’s worried that it will scare people away, as there are still plenty of good renters out there. “It’s always the luck of the draw with what kind of tenants they will be.” The rising number of grow-ops in Abbotsford has caused many to get out of the rental business, said Kahlon. He adds that he would like to get out as well, but can’t simply walk away from his properties.

An Abbotsford man was sentenced Friday in Vancouver provincial court to five months in prison for contravening the B.C. Securities Act. Malcolm Cameron Boyd Stevenson, 54, was given double credit for the 17 weeks he has already served since being arrested in March on a Canadawide warrant for his role in a fraudulent investment scheme. This means he has already served the full five-month sentence, but it is not yet known whether he will remain in prison while separate Criminal Code charges are dealt with in court. Stevenson was first charged under the Securities Act in June 2007 in relation to his role with an investment vehicle called the International Fiduciary Corporation (IFC), which operated from 2004 to 2006. In February 2008, the BC Securities Commission (BCSC) ordered Stevenson to pay $1.5 million for his involvement in the Ponzi scheme that took more than $23.3 million from 89 B.C. investors, who received returns of only $10.3 million. The matter went to trial in May 2010, and Stevenson was found guilty of three counts of contravening the Securities Act, but the sentencing was put on hold when he disappeared. A warrant for his arrest was issued earlier this year.

It is believed that Stevenson was living outside of Canada, and he was arrested at Pearson International Airport on March 21 while trying to re-enter the country. According to the BCSC, IFC promised investors a return of six per cent a month through an “asset growth program.” The BCSC said that program did not exist and instead Stevenson and two colleagues used the money “to enrich themselves and keep the scheme going” by shifting money from new investors to older investors. A woman who invested with the company said she was appalled at Friday’s ruling. Under the Securities Act, Stevenson faced a jail sentence of up to three years and a maximum $3 million fine. “This has impacted so many people, and all he gets is five months?” she said. The woman said she paid $140,000 to IFC and received initial returns of up to $6,000 before it fell apart. She said she did not lose a lot of money, but is upset for those who invested after her, with some sacrificing their life savings. She said she now finds it difficult to trust people. Stevenson next appears in Abbotsford provincial court on June 27 for a bail hearing on the Criminal Code charges – one count each of fraud over $5,000 and theft over $5,000. A trial date has not yet been set.

HST: Clear as mud
Barring any slowdowns from the postal strike action, the HST mailin referendum is underway, with packages en route. The packages include a ballot, instructions and three envelopes — and for those of you who generally toss out instruction manuals — don’t. In typical government fashion, the key thing to remember for the HST referendum is that yes means no and no means yes. Feel confused? You are not alone. The wording of the ballot reads: “Are you in favour of extinguishing the HST (harmonized sales tax) and reinstating the PST (provincial sales tax) in conjunction with the GST (goods and services tax)? (Yes/ No).” Remember the wise words of high school teachers everywhere and read the question thoroughly before marking your answer.
Voting yes means you are in favour of scrapping the HST. Voting no means you’d like to keep it around. The cynic in us wonders if Christy Clark’s government is counting on voter confusion as a way of boosting support for the tax at the ballot box. This is much like how the Liberals were planning an “education” campaign on the HST, which has since turned into an obviously partisan attempt to sway voter opinion in favour of the new tax. You might believe the Liberals’ change to a 10 per cent HST is the best choice. You might not. How you decide to vote is up to you. But be sure you are marking your ballot with your true intention, not out of confusion. – Black Press
Tax my car, not my income Tom
Fletcher
B.C. Views VICTORIA – I recently bought a used vehicle. Bitter experience with used cars sold privately led me to make the purchase at an established, reputable dealership, and I’m pleased with the result. The first car I ever bought was a private sale. A young man showed off the old car he had painted himself, while his mother smiled and offered homemade lemonade. Sold for $600. The choice of drink proved appropriate when the engine clattered to a final halt a week later. It was then I discovered that the crankcase contained mostly STP Oil Treatment, to conceal the engine’s true state. At the dealership this spring, the harmonized sales tax was not a hot topic. Like most goods, new and used vehicles were subject to 12 per cent PST and GST before, and they are subject to 12 per cent HST now.
When I mentioned this in a news report last week, an astute reader in Nanaimo reminded me that it’s not quite that simple. Vehicles, boats and aircraft sold by private individuals are exempt from GST. This was one of the populist concessions the Mulroney government made in an effort to placate angry voters 20 years ago. In B.C., prior to July 2010, private sales were subject to seven-percent PST only. During the hubbub over the implementation of the HST in its 2010 budget, the B.C. Liberal government also increased tax on private vehicle sales by five per cent, from seven to 12 per cent. The stated reason was to provide “comparable treatment” for private and commercial sales of used vehicles. This provoked an exchange of partisan accusations that typically passes for debate in the B.C. legislature. It’s a payoff to car dealers, the NDP screamed. You guys opposed all of our income tax cuts and now you’re pretending to support lower taxes, the B.C. Liberals yelled back. Out in the real world, one can observe the effect of a tax structure that gives an advantage to private sellers.
Municipal governments call them “curbers.” They use their garage, driveway and street to repair and market an endless series of used cars. Whether they are crooks or not, their efforts are every bit as appealing to the neighbourhood as the guy with multiple illegal
Out in the real world, one can observe the effect of a tax structure that gives an advantage to private sellers. suites whose tenants plug up the parking for the whole block. In each case, they violate zoning rules and hog services for personal benefit. And if you think they pay income or other taxes on their home businesses, I have a 1973 Pinto you might want to test-drive.
The subject of used cars came up last week when NDP leader Adrian Dix belatedly launched his own anti-HST tour. Apparently he’s having second thoughts about letting Bill Vander Zalm set NDP tax policy based on a world government conspiracy theory. Dix’s first media event was staged in a Burnaby kitchen. The homeowner dismissed the $350 HST rebate he has been offered to offset costs such as summer camp for his two kids, saying that will be gone several times over if he buys a used car. This clearly implies that HST has been extended to used cars. This is the sort of claim that drives much of the rage against it, as people simply scan their bills for those hated three letters. There are signs that people understand their taxes better, however. An Angus Reid poll last week found that 58 per cent of British Columbians now prefer to pay taxes on their consumption rather than their income. Task force on trucking to meet again Initiatives to be considered, no public session in the works Ashley WRAY Abbotsford News
The mayor’s task force on commercial truck parking will hold a meeting next week to discuss the feedback received at a recent public information session hosted by the city. On June 1, local residents were encouraged to comment on the initiatives in the document Mayor’s Task Force on Commercial Truck Parking: Moving Forward, which lists suggestions to accommodate and support the fast-
growing business of trucking. The most controversial point proposes residential parking, said Coun. Moe Gill, who is part of the task force. Numerous emails were submitted on the topic, along with questionnaires that were available at the information session. The follow-up meeting, on June 23, will see the task force discuss those suggestions and concerns. Currently, there is no plan to hold another public event. However,
Gill said that could change depending on the outcome of the upcoming meeting. Once the task force is satisfied with the initiatives, they will present their report to city council. Along with residential parking on private property, the report also suggests a pilot project, where specific streets in industrial areas would be used for overnight commercial truck parking, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Fast-tracking development applications
for new or expanded commercial truck parking facilities on properties that aren’t located within
the Ag ricultural Land Reserve (ALR) is another initiative, as is promoting the use of gravel pits
and sites belonging to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. The Mayor’s Task
Force on Commercial Tr uck Parking: Moving Forward can be read in full online at abbotsford.ca.

ferent,” said Bislin. “My goal is to do something a bit different than every other classical musician and combine comedy with jazz.” The day after the concer t, Bislin will leave to participate in Italy’s Casalmaggiore International Music Festival. The threeweek program offers advanced training and numerous performance opportunities. He will then attend classes at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, where he’s majoring in violin and strings with a minor in piano. Bislin picked up his first violin at the age of four and has since become a well-known classical jazz player and composer throughout the Lower Mainland. He has won several provincial music festivals, is a double silver medalist from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and performed numerous concerts in the U.S., Germany, S w i t z e rl a n d , Czechoslovakia and Italy. Bislin has also released two albums, the latest titled Strings on Fire. Bislin looks up to Ger man-American classical violinist David Garrett and 19th century violinist Niccolo Paganini, a flamboyant artist admired for his style and innovation. “I love the feeling you get when you’re on stage, that adrenaline rush,” he said. “It’s like freedom. Everything just goes away and you’re in your own world when you play. My goal is to make people feel what I kind of feel.” The farewell concert begins at 8 p.m. at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, 32315 South Fraser Way. Admission is $10 for adults ($12 at the door) and $5 for youth/students under 15 ($7 at the door). Valley Voices adds public vote Kerrie-Ann SCHOENIT Abbotsford News
Fans will have a chance to help determine this year’s Valley Voices winner. Event organizers have now added a new component to the American Idol-style competition, where the winner will be selected by a combination of public voting and the judging panel. “I think with a lot of these types of contests, the challenge is the audience or people in the audience believe that it should have gone one way or another,” said contest director Darcy Deutsch, who has partnered with Tim Barrett and Brad Styba on the project. “So we’re going to allow the audience to take part. They, the people, will speak and be heard.” A new people’s choice award will also be handed out this year.
Once the finalists are chosen, their profiles will be put on the Valley Voices website to allow people to begin text messaging or voting online for their favourite artist. The contest format will be similar to last year, with the competition split into two age categories – eight to 12, and 13 to 18. At least 10 finalists from each group will perform at the Abbotsford Agrifair on Aug. 1 to determine the overall winner. Contestants will be offered performance opportunities July 28-31 to prepare for the finals. The winner will receive cash, a three-track demo produced by Deutsch, photo shoot, free lessons and consultation with Nuu Music Artist Management. “Our criteria is pretty high. We want people who are confident and are going to go up there and deliver the song
and make it their own,” said Deutsch, adding that song choice is critical. He suggests contestants pick tunes they can identify with in order to help them relate the story through their voice and stage performance. Throughout the competition, the judges are there to provide feedback, encourage artists and help them along in their careers, said Deutsch. “The ones that can take the criticism and run with it, are the ones we’ve seen have the most success,” he added. Valley Voices is open to all singers in B.C. Auditions are on June 18 and 19 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Darcy D Vocal Studio, 33783 Essendene Ave. Each singer will be asked to perform a full song, a capella. To book an audition time, call Tim Barrett at 604-866-5911 or email timbarrett@nuumusic. com.

and don’t know if it’s worthwhile to pursue a claim. The amount of compensation you may be entitled to varies from one case to the next and depends on the scope, severity and duration of your injuries. Not only are you entitled to damages for the pain and suffering caused by the injuries themselves, but you may also be entitled to recover lost wages and out of pocket expenses, such as chiropractor or physiotherapy costs. In cases involving more serious injuries, it may be possible to recover future medical costs, lost opportunities to earn income in the future, or the cost of retraining for a new career. Most lawyers will take a personal injury case on a contingency fee basis, which means you do not pay anything up front, and you only pay once a settlement is reached. Initial consultations are often free of charge with no obligation to hire the lawyer. Doug Lester is a partner with RDM Lawyers. Rotary raises $30,000 for Campus of Care Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
On Sunday afternoon, a trio of golf balls were launched in succession towards a hole 160 yards away, each one carrying a million-dollar dream. None of the balls, struck by Million Dollar Hole in One contest finalists Todd Chretien, Broden Williams and Derek Currie, found the bottom of the cup at Fraserglen Golf Course. Chretien came the closest, but his attempt settled 34 feet from the pin. But that didn’t mean the contest wasn’t a success. Quite the opposite, in fact. The Rotary Club of Abbotsford fundraiser generated in the neighbourhood of $30,000, which will be put toward the Campus of Care being constructed next to Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Rebels finally falter Nanaimo deals local lacrosse squad its first loss
Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
The Valley Rebels saw their season-opening win streak snapped in unceremonious fashion on Sunday, as they fell 8-5 on the road to the Nanaimo Timbermen. The Rebels, who won their first seven games of the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association (WCSLA) campaign, had beaten the Timbermen in Nanaimo the previous weekend with a short bench, and head coach
Jim Nishiyama felt that perhaps his charges took things for granted the second time around. “We thought we’d won before we even got off the ferry,” he said. “You can’t do that. You’ve got to go there to work, and we came out really flat.” The Indians raced out to an 8-2 lead through two periods on Sunday, and the Rebels’ third-period rally fell short. Geordie Wells scored a hat trick in the loss, while Shaun McRae notched two assists.
The Rebels still lead the WCSLA with a 7-1 record, and they’ll look to start a new streak on Friday when they host the North Shore Indians at 8 p.m. at MSA Arena. “To become a better team, sometimes you’ve got to lose,” Nishiyama analyzed. “Teams aren’t just going to roll over because the Rebels are coming. Every team knows what we have – a good goalie, good offence, good defence. But you’ve still got to work hard to earn it.”
Craig focused on earning NHL roster spot From A20
groin injury in the second exhibition game. When that hit, it took me a while to get back and get going again.” A big part of Craig’s comfort level with the Penguins stems from the fact they have a track record of allowing players to earn their way onto the NHL roster in training camp. “Their core group has won a Stanley Cup, and yet they need players who can play different roles on their hockey club,” he
said. “I feel I can compete for and fill one of those roles.” If Craig’s bid for an NHL roster spot falls short, being back in Wilkes-Barre would be a nice consolation prize. “They’re always a competitive team as well, vying for the Calder Cup,” he pointed out. “I think at this stage in my career, it’s important to be with an organization that’s committed to winning, whether it’s at the American Hockey League level or in the National Hockey League.”

They relocated to Enderby, enjoying the Okanagan for 3 years before moving to Sherwood Park, AB, to live with their daughter Judy and her family. While farming Ray also worked for many years at Stave Lake Cedar Mill in Dewdney. No funeral at his request. A family gathering to be held at a later date to celebrate his life.

Pursuit of happiness Couple settles into new life after long immigration process
A
fter six years of paperwork and waiting, Xian Li Wang and his wife Chao Li have found a better life. The couple left their home in Beijing, China in February 2010 to pursue new job opportunities in Vancouver. Two weeks after arriving, Wang was hired as an IT technician at Advanced Nutrients in Abbotsford. The couple relocated to the city three months later due to the long commute. Since immigrating, their biggest challenge has been the language barrier. As an IT technician for United Airlines in Beijing, Wang used English for email communication every day and during some conference calls. However, he said his knowledge wasn’t good enough

The streets are quieter, there’s less traffic congestion, shorter work days and more time spent with family. There’s also an abundance of outdoor activities. While the journey has presented some challenges, Li says newcomers need to trust themselves and feel more confident in their decision. Wang also suggests immigrants do as much preparation as they can before moving. He spent at least a year-and-ahalf researching information about living and working in the region, and even joined a Vancouver forum.

Van Asseldonk is among three crime analysts and one assistant with the Abbotsford Police Department (APD). ly targeting areas and offenders. By doing that, we’re evaluating our successes and where we need to change,” she said. This process helps Van Asseldonk identify patterns of crime - for example, that a series of break-ins are occurring in a particular neighbourhood - much more quickly than in the past. Police can then take steps to combat the issue, such as stepping up surveillance or holding community awareness meetings. The system also tracks known offenders living in Abbotsford and enables police to monitor those individuals before they commit new crimes. Van Asseldonk said she enjoys watching trends emerge and finds it rewarding when an arrest is made, in part, because of the work she does. “It’s nice to know you played a part in that.”

Feeling blue this season? That’s a good thing! All shades of blue – from azure to ultramarine – are making a strong statement for spring/summer, and they all can be paired with just about any other shade. Crisp white looks particularly fabulous, whether it’s in the form of tailored trousers, a classic cuffed blouse or a pencil skirt. Navy is the summer’s most obvious fashion choice, but don’t rule out shades such as powder blue, midnight, and indigo. They’re alll up forr g grabs!

Natural glow in a few easy steps Looking for a sun–kissed glow this summer? You can attain the coveted “straight from the beach” look without lying in the sun. The latest self–tanning and bronzing products are affordable and convenient, and make it easier than ever to achieve a faux tan that looks natural. When choosing a self–tanner, select a shade that’s right for your natural skin tone. Before applying, be sure to exfoliate – getting rid of dead skin cells allows the self–tanner to absorb evenly to prevent streaking. A sunless body spray is easy to apply for instant all–over bronzing; or try a sunless and firming formula that offers the added bonus of toning the skin to help diminish the look of cellulite. As a general rule, you can get by with
applying self–tanners every two or three days. Milder products such as tinted moisturizers can be applied as part of your everyday beauty routine to hydrate while adding colour. Try a non–greasy formula with broad spectrum SPF 15 protection or higher. A bronzer can help you create a healthy look and add natural glow to the skin, in seconds. Powder bronzers are great for balancing skin tone or “straightening” a tan – and they’re ideal for oily skin. To enhance your natural features with warm gold, bronze or pink tones, try some of the new “baked” bronzers on the market. Just highlight the brow bone, cheekbones, décolletage, or anywhere the sun might naturally kiss, for an instant soft glow.

Tips for makeup on the go I’ve always believed that taking more than 10 minutes to do your makeup on a day-to-day basis is a bit of a waste of time. It shouldn’t be a time-consuming chore every day. I think that’s where many women run into problems and feel like doing their makeup is just “too much.” With summer quickly approaching, we all want to spend even less time primping and more time enjoying the great weather and time with our friends and families. Let’s talk about how we can make that
happen. No matter how much or what kind of makeup you apply to your face, taking care of your skin is the first step in creating a beautiful canvas. I know it might seem redundant, but daily moisturizer is a must, as is sunscreen. I like to use a moisturizer with SPF15 in the morning and a nighttime moisturizer that is slightly more rich, although it doesn’t necessarily have to be a “nighttime” cream. Your skin probably doesn’t know the difference anyway.

Lambert Beyond Beauty Hydration is key, both externally and internally, and so is weekly exfoliation. How can your skin look and feel fresh and glowing if it has layers of dead skin built up on it? It can’t. Your water intake and the amount of time you spend in the bath and shower can also have a major effect on your skin. Keeping your body hydrated, especially as the outside temperatures start rising, is imperative to giving your skin a healthy appearance. When your skin is moisturized and ready to go, use a foundation brush to blend a lightweight foundation over your face to even out the skin tone. You can dab or dot the foundation to the five points on your face – the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin – and blend the product until you can’t see it anymore. If you do get oily throughout the day, quickly dust your T-zone with a translucent powder. If you prefer mineral makeup products, apply your mineral powder foundation with a kabuki brush. With loose mineral powder, I tap some of the product into the lid of the container and press and roll my brush in the powder to pick the product up and work it into the bristles. Tap off the excess
powder and then blend and buff the powder onto the face. Switch to a small fluffy brush to get your makeup into the smaller corners around the nose or underneath the eye area. Use a bronzer or blush along your cheekbones in a warm and sunny shade, or pinch your own cheeks if time is really slipping away from you. There’s always an alternative to being bare-faced and gloomy, if you really want to make it happen. Giving your eyes an open appearance, whether you’ve had four hours of sleep or eight hours, can easily be achieved by curling your eyelashes. Gently place the eyelash curler close to the base of your lashes, without pinching the eyelid (never clamp down without testing gently first). I like to pulse and squeeze the handle for up to 15 seconds per eye before switching and repeating. Your eyelashes should never look like a flipped-up hat lid, but should have a gentle curve to them. Wait a few minutes after using your eyelash curler before applying your mascara. In the meantime, you can dip and dab your lips with your favorite lip gloss or lipstick. I love to apply gloss separately to the top and bottom lips, dabbing to create a fresh layer of colour on each half. Allow the gloss to settle and you will find yourself with a glassy effect that is high-fashion and gorgeous. Chrissy Lambert is a freelance makeup artist and writer in the Fraser Valley. My vine values From the Rhône’s Côtes du Ventoux in France, I pick La Vieille Ferme Rosé ($12.99/13% ABV). Chill it down to about 10°C and serve it along side a corned beef or pastrami sandwich on rye, with some Dijon mustard, and you’ve got super yum! Try the Spanish sparkler Brut Rosé NV ($16.99/12% ABV) from Sigura Viudas. Your local B.C. liquor store may be able to order it in from another location if you can’t find it around town. Huge value in this wine that’s easy to sip solo or pair with almost any food. Salut!

Finally, it’s time to break out the super sippers for fun on the patio. And nothing is as fun, thirst quenching or food friendly as a rosé, which can vary in colour from orange to pale pink to magenta and present all sorts of flavour profiles. We opened a bottle of the 2009 Road 13 Honest John’s Rosé ($17.99) the other night while visiting friends in the Shuswap. It was hot outside and we snacked on pretzels with artichoke-andasiago dip and those little Asian crackers while waiting to start dinner on the barbeque. Perfect! This wine is dry, juicy and thirstquenching. Its red berry characters and citrusy undertone would serve you well if you were to match it up with a take-out rotisserie chicken, salamis and cheeses or Fraser Valley strawberries dipped in freshly cracked black pepper. Really.

Dr. Kyle Nawrot
Choose vegetables and fruit for snacks most of the time. Avoid snacks high in sugar, fat and salt. Try beginning dinner with a salad or raw vegetables. Keep a bowl of fruit out for the kids to grab as an easy snack. Children are healthier when they eat with their family – eat dinner together.

Lots of items that are just sitting around collecting dust in basements and jewellery boxes can be exchanged for money, on the spot!”

She had a nice assortment of coins that were not rare dates, but Expert Elijah Gold explains, “We have

Perry Bruce continued, “Canadian coins prior to 1967, and American coins prior to 1964 are all made with silver, and we have noticed a large increase of customers coming to the Roadshow with coins and cashing them in for their silver value”. Experts at the Roadshow will evaluate and examine your items, FREE OF CHARGE, as well as educate you on them. The Roadshow sees hundreds of people during a one week event, and they have been travelling across Canada to different cities and towns, searching for your forgotten treasures. Trains, dolls, toys, old advertising signs, pocket watches, porcelain and bisque dolls, pretty much everything can be sold at the Roadshow. Any early edition Barbie’s are sought after by the Road-
show collectors, as well as a variety of Dinky Toys and Matchbox cars. Lionel Trains and a variety of tin toys can also fetch a price, especially if they are in their original box or in mint condition. If a collector is looking for one of your collectibles, they can always make an offer to buy it. A man brought in a 1950’s Marx Tin Toy Robot, in fairly good condition, still in its original box. They were able to locate a collector for that speciÀc toy within minutes, and that gentleman went home with over $700 for his Toy Robot and a few other small toys. So whether you have an old toy car, a broken gold chain, or a Barbie sitting in the closet, bring it down to the Roadshow, they will take a look at it for FREE and it could put money in your pocket!
