Two citizens received commendation awards from the Abbotsford Police Department on Tuesday for their heroic efforts in two separate incidents. Peter McGraa, 45, was recognized for pulling Bryan Volden, 65, from his partially submerged vehicle on March 17, when it crashed into the Sumas River in McDonald Park. McGraa witnessed the accident, swam out to the vehicle and attempted to get into the car, but the doors were locked and all the windows were closed. He made two trips back to the shoreline to find a rock that could break the driver’s side rear window. McGraa then pulled Volden out of the car, brought him to shore and performed CPR until emergency crews arrived. MCGRAA Volden died two days later in hospital due to heart failure, which was believed to be the cause of the accident. At Tuesday’s presentation before the police board, Mayor George Peary said that because of McGraa’s actions, Volden survived long enough for his out-ofprovince family to arrive and see him before he passed away. Volden’s family were in attendance at the presentation. “We are just eternally grateful to Peter for such a selfless act in that moment,” said Rebecca Del Pozo of Seattle, one of Volden’s two daughters.
The other commendation was presented to Dan Visser, who led police to the suspect in a brutal racial assault that occurred on April 26. Four Indo-Canadian men were sitting on a bench in the area of Old Yale Road and McConnell Creek with some friends when they were approached by a Caucasian man in his 20s. The man yelled obscenities and derogatory ethnic comments, and then struck one of the men in the face with a liquor bottle, knocking him to the ground. The assailant then ran off. The 63-year-old victim did not require hospitalization, but his face was bruised. As police were working with local residents to identify and locate a suspect, Visser advised officers that he had previously seen a man matching the VISSER description riding a bike and walking in the area. He said he would attempt to take a photo of the suspect the next time he saw him. The resulting photograph proved to be a key piece of evidence. Daronne Dobni, 29, was arrested and charged with assault with a weapon and is now making his way through the court system. Visser said he felt compelled to help when he heard what had happened. “It was helping contribute to right a wrong, and it was an honour to be able to do it,” he said.

Abbotsford Police Const. Derek Baker receives the Outstanding Community Service award from committee chair Brian Lee.
The Abbotsford Police Award for Outstanding Community Service was presented Tuesday to the officer responsible for organizing a major high school basketball tournament in the community. Const. Derek Baker received the honour for his extensive work leading up to the creation of the Abbotsford Police Department high school basketball tournament in 2009. The event continued in 2010, when 750 local athletes from Grade 8 to 12 attended the tournament. The tourney is also taking place this year, when it is anticipated all schools will take part. Baker spent countless hours planning and organizing the event, outside of his regular policing duties. At Tuesday’s police board meeting, he received a tro-

phy and a replica of his police badge which will be mounted on a plaque. The award was presented by local jeweller Brian Lee, who chairs the public committee which selects the recipient. The tournament is a way for the police to build bridges with local youth. Commenting on the tournament last fall, Baker said, “It’s easy for us to sit here and say, ‘Choose a crimefree lifestyle,’ but this is an opportunity to put our money where our mouth is, and provide kids an outlet to be involved in something positive.” Hired by the APD in 2003, Baker was formerly a high school teacher in Maple Ridge. He has developed and coordinated several sports programs through schools and community centres.

Slow start to crops Unseasonal weather brings uncertainty Adrian MACNAIR Abbotsford News
It doesn’t seem to matter which farmer you ask. This has been the coldest and wettest spring Fraser Valley growers have ever seen. The Abbotsford Airport recorded 300 mm of rain between April 1 and May 31, or 36 per cent above normal. The result is at least a twoweek delay in planting fruits and vegetables, which means berries that are usually ripening this time of year are still green. “It’s been very wet, slow ripening with too much rain,” said Henk Onnink, who has a blueberry farm on Downes Road, west of 304 Street. Onnink has been growing berries for 30 years, but this year they’re two to three weeks late. He said the excessively wet spring has helped the berries to grow, but without sun they

Blueberries accounted for 56 per cent of Canada’s 280,000acre fruit crop in 2010, with the Lower Fraser Valley producing 99 per cent of the B.C. crop. Normally, the picking would start in early July, but Onnink
said the problem isn’t limited to just blueberry growers. Strawberries usually ripen earlier than other fruits, but Devinder Maan said she began picking just last Sunday, 10 days later than usual. Maan Farms, located on

McKenzie Road south of the highway, has been growing strawberries since 1977 and this is the worst year. And because there were few sunny days in the spring it was difficult to figure out when to plant. That brings a level of uncertainty as to how the berries will fare. “One field looks promising, but as for the other field, time will tell,” she said. B.C.’s fruit crop is a boon for Fraser Valley agriculture, generating $276 million in revenue last year according to Statistics Canada, cornering 42 per cent of the entire Canadian market. But growers are optimistic and the fields look good, says Sharmin Gamiet of the Fraser Valley Strawberry Growers Association. “If the weather continues like this, it’s going to be a fabulous crop,” she said, admitting the berries are a couple of weeks late. “If the crop ripens slowly, like it is right now, it’s going to be a good crop. The challenge for us is if it gets suddenly hot and dry.” In his 10 years of farming blueberries, Kerry Seale of Blueberry Junction has never Continued on A6
Friend fundraising for riot victim Facebook page set up to replace car Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
A Facebook page has been set up to help raise funds for a woman whose car was destroyed in the Stanley Cup riot June 15. Michael Didyk, a longtime friend of Crystal Ratvay of Chilliwack, said he hopes to raise about $3,000 to replace Ratvay’s 1990 Chevy Cavalier. The Facebook page is called “Tragic Riot Damage: Help Replace Crystal’s Trashed Car.” “She’s having a rough go ... I just wanted to do something to help,” said Didyk, a former Abbotsford resident now living in Vancouver. Ratvay, whose story was reported in the June 18 News, did not have comprehensive
insurance on her vehicle, meaning repairs are not covered by ICBC. Ratvay, 30, received the Cavalier from her aunt on the day of the riot. Her own vehicle had broken down a couple of months ago and she could not afford the approximate $2,500 in costs to repair it. She suffers from Crystal Ratvay p o s t - t r a u m a t i c Michael Didyk. migraine disorder – the effect of a serious 2005 car accident in which she was a passenger – and has difficulty working, although she is taking
classes at University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford. Ratvay parked her car on Seymour Street in Vancouver, and then watched the Stanley Cup final with Didyk in his apartment on Homer Street. The two discovered later that night her car was one of the dozens that had been Submitted photo flipped and smashed with friend during the riot. Didyk said he first went online to post pictures of Ratvay’s damaged vehicle and to ask whether anyone had other pictures or video of the perpetrators in hopes of

identifying them and turning the information over to police. A few people provided images, while others asked if they could do something to help Ratvay. This led to Didyk creating a Facebook page for that purpose. He estimates that $500 in donations have come in so far, with another $500 pledged. As well, two DJs who came across the page will be donating their fees from a show Monday night at The Cellar in Vancouver. The venue will also contribute cover proceeds. For more information, visit the Facebook page at http:// www.facebook.com/vancouver. riot.victim or contact Didyk at 604-308-8717 or michael@ team2020.ca.
CUP POLICING COST $131,000 Policing the Stanley Cup playoff crowds in Abbotsford this year amounted to $131,000 in overtime costs for local police. Chief Bob Rich, speaking at Tuesday’s police board meeting, said the Abbotsford Police had budgeted $40,000 to monitor crowds and traffic that gathered along South Fraser Way following Vancouver Canuck wins. “(The budget) is done well in advance of knowing whether the Canucks will be in the playoffs,” Rich said. He said the additional $91,000 in costs will likely be taken out of the contingency fund.
ROBBERY SENTENCING An Abbotsford man has been sentenced to two years in prison and two years’ probation for breaking into a home in which an 89-year-old woman was sleeping. Clarke David Doherty, 26, previously pleaded guilty in Abbotsford provincial court to break and enter with intent to commit an offence. He kicked in the door of an apartment in the 2000 block of Gladwin Road at 1:45 a.m. on March 13, entered the woman’s bedroom and demanded cash before fleeing. She was not physically harmed. Charges were stayed in April against Cyril Howe, 28, in relation to the incident.
SEVEN JOIN THE ORDER Seven recipients of the 2011 Order of Abbotsford will be honoured at next Monday night’s council meeting. Those honoured this year are: George Ferguson; Karen Matty; Barbara Mowat; Carson Noftle; Les Stagg; Barry Stewart and Fred Strumpski. Each year, council recognizes outstanding community leaders who have been involved in community service and demonstrated a sustained commitment to the betterment of the majority of the residents of Abbotsford.

Pot clone factory busted 6,400 marijuana seedlings seized by police Abbotsford Police busted a marijuana “clone factory” Monday morning in the 4000 block of Ross Road, seizing 6,400 clones (seedlings) and 100 mature plants from an outbuilding. Const. Ian MacDonald said about 100 more clones were found in the home, as were small amounts of cocaine and methamphetamine. He said the clones are typically sold for $5 to
$10 per plant to people who run grow-ops, and can save weeks of growing time over starting with seeds. He said using clones also increases the likelihood that a plant will continue to grow and flourish. MacDonald said two men and one woman are “people of interest” in the bust, but charges have not yet been laid.

seen bees pollinating blueberry flowers into late June. He expects to have a 20 per cent reduction in his berry crop, and doesn’t expect his berries to ripen until mid-July to the first week of August. “I know it’s hard to believe but the earliest blueberries from Chilliwack would actually be available around the first of July because the [Abbotsford Berry] festival is normally that weekend. This year we’ll be lucky
to have strawberries for the Abbotsford Festival,” he said. Seale said the eastern end of the Fraser Valley actually gets a bit more sun and heat and yields earlier blueberries, which is why Chilliwack usually gets the jump on Abbotsford. It isn’t just berry farmers that have been affected by cold and wet weather. Peter Schouten of Heppell’s Potato Corp. is coming off the soggiest September in his 17 years as a farm owner. The fall was so wet
that it wiped out the crops of many potato farmers in the Lower Mainland. The largest producer in Abbotsford, he plants 650 acres of potatoes on Sumas Prairie and lost about 30 per cent of it last year, roughly $2 million. “We need some heat to make up for the time we’ve lost and that pushes us back later into fall which makes us a little worried,” he said. “It’s not so much just that we’re delayed two weeks. The crop that is growing is delayed

two weeks, but we have a gap in planting of almost 40 days, which is unheard of.” Potato farmers like to start planting every other day or week from February to late May. But non-stop rains this spring meant Schouten couldn’t plant his crops for over a month, so when it comes time to deliver to market he might just come up empty-handed. “There were a couple of days where we just planted 48 hours straight. We just had two shifts of crews going and we hired everybody we could hire.” Peter Guichon of Felix Farms, a 57-yearold four-generation farmer, echoes the comments of everybody else. “Wettest, coolest spring I’ve ever seen. I’ve never seen nothing like it. My dad’s 86 years old and he says the same thing.” Guichon runs Felix Farms with three brothers and a sister, making it the largest vegetable farm in the province. They lost 70 per cent of their potato crop last fall. Although the rain delayed planting for potato farmers, the real make-or-break will be based on precipitation in September and October. If they have another fall like last year it would put a lot of farmers out of business for good, Guichon said. But Seale said so long as food prices don’t rise too quickly, most people won’t notice. “To the average individual they might just say, gee, I’m not eating blueberries as early as last year and that’s as far it goes,” he said.

It’s payback time It’s payback time and the perpetrators of last week’s post-Stanley Cup mob violence should be dealt with immediately and appropriately. But neither is likely to happen if resolving the pain and hurt of Vancouver’s notorious Game 7 riot – and the millions in resulting damages – is left up to B.C.’s overburdened court system. There has to be another way to deal with the hurt and damage caused by intoxicated and crowd-maddened knuckleheads last week. While naming and shaming may give victims and shocked witnesses a momentary feeling of empowerment, this online outpouring of grief and frustration will amount to nothing if the police and court systems don’t have the resources to deal with the aftermath. What if, instead of just blogging their apologies, perpetrators actually sat down and faced their victims in a wellestablished process called restorative justice and were encouraged to make
things right? What if, instead of moaning about their loss of jobs, sponsorships, respect they started to think about someone else for a change and listened to the victims and their needs? What if they had to pay insurance deductibles and act as taxi drivers for those inconvenienced when their cars were overturned and torched? What if they had to organize, pay for and clean up a family-friendly pro-Vancouver event like the one they trashed? What if the perpetrators had to work for free for one of the businesses they looted or were appointed to a city crew to clean up street litter and graffiti? Publish the results? Why not? The public needs closure and its faith in the justice system restored, otherwise frustration will continue to mount, ratcheting up the anger and the hate, and further blackening the city’s tarnished reputation. – Black Press

Views Let’s assume that when everyone in B.C. gets to be finance minister for a day, a majority choose to throw a $3-billion chair through the office window to show how mad they are about the harmonized sales tax. The cleanup will take two years, but first there will be a provincial election to decide who holds the broom and dustpan. And the choices are becoming clear. You have a new B.C. Liberal leader who has tacked to the centre on the minimum wage and business taxes in an effort to seek forgiveness for the high-handed administration that lost the public’s trust. And you have two opposition parties that are entirely reactionary in their approach to today’s fast-changing world. There isn’t much to say at this point about the B.C. Conservatives under John Cummins. They are against modern
treaty settlements, the carbon tax and (I think) the HST. They stand for lower taxes, but so far that doesn’t include a reduced sales tax rate. The rest of their platform is platitudes, with enough of a whiff of protest to pave a path for an NDP government. And the NDP manages to make the B.C. Conservatives look modern. In January I described how the B.C. NDP constitution still formally endorses the government taking over major industries, and explicitly rejects all for-profit activity. I won’t re-quote the convoluted Marxist language, which boils down to ‘state good, competition bad.’ A reader provides a real-time example of how this principle would apply to a problem confronting the B.C. government. To prevent another riot in Vancouver, the government should supervise an orderly redistribution of Stanley Cups. This core principle of socialism, an 80-year-old relic, was debated at the national party’s convention in Vancouver on the weekend. Socialist deadenders rallied to keep it alive, rejecting vague new wording that favours “social democratic principles” to ensure “economic and social equality.”
This isn’t just an academic discussion for party conventions. One of the last acts of the NDP opposition in the B.C. legislature this spring was to propose a legislated end to poverty. According to their bill, B.C. should create a Ministry of Poverty Reduction with
I won’t re-quote the convoluted Marxist language, which boils down to ‘state good, competition, bad.’ annual goals for imposing the redistribution of wealth. The “Poverty Reduction Act” contains a weasel-worded definition of poverty: insufficient money to “acquire and maintain economic self-reliance” and “facilitate integration into and participation in society.” Does this mean a guaranteed annual income? Can people achieve “economic self-reliance” by collecting welfare? Does
anyone actually believe this stuff ? If you believe unionized state monopolies are the best business model, I guess so. I won’t elaborate on the fringe parties such as Chris Delaney’s B.C. First, a splinter from the B.C. Conservative stump. The Green Party is the only one other than the B.C. Liberals that looks to the future. Perhaps too far in the future. The Greens want a dramatically increased carbon tax and a transition to a “steady state” economy that doesn’t try to produce and consume more. Try eliminating poverty with that program. I frequently get letters from people who accuse me of parroting the government’s line on issues such as the HST and poverty. If there are political alternatives out there that make actual sense in today’s world, I’d love to hear about them. Until then, these are the choices. Any day now, NDP leader Adrian Dix might start to unveil the positive alternative he has promised for an election that may come this fall. That will be something to examine closely. Right now, he’s urging you to throw that chair.

letters No sense in repealing HST
I hate the HST! But – how will we pay off the hidden $6 billion debt? Premier Gordon Campbell brought in the HST to pay for his twin bridges and super highway projects. That’s the real reason for the HST. Period. It’s almost $4 billion for the twin “Gordon Campbell Bridges” and almost $2 billion for the truck superhighway from the Golden Ears Bridge to Delta. Makes the three-quartersof-a-billion dollar “fast ferries
fiasco” look small, doesn’t it? Right now, no matter what the accountants’ numbers say, we are $6 billion in the hole. And sooner or later, we and our grandchildren will have to pay that debt. No matter who or what is taxed to replace revenue lost if we repeal the HST, we will have to pay that debt in the end! Did you know, we already have a “double win”? 1.) We got our B.C. Liberal government to admit to a mistake. Wow!
Smile with new confidence den
2.) Another win: There are rebates for some of us and a two per cent lowering of the tax rate for us all. Now, let’s not shoot ourselves in the foot by repealing the HST. It would be a victory, but a hollow one. The cost of changing back to previous taxes plus the decrease in revenues will only add to the debt load our children and grandchildren will have to pay. Do we really want to do that?

Sportscasters didn’t provoke riot Sometimes it’s simply best to stay out of a heated debate. But after reading “Put some blame on news media,” (June 21) I’m discarding that advice. Am I really supposed to accept that those who showed up at Game 7 complete with bear spray, rocks, knives and incendiary devices came prepared to create chaos because of overly-enthusiastic sportscasters ? I don’t think so. Even though I was very much
lookinig forward to a Canuck win – and had listened to any number of experts predict that outcome – the loss did not provoke me to go out and find a car to set on fire. After hearing a report from a young man who saw onlookers join in to kick a man just for the fun of it, I seriously wonder how far we are from a re-write of Lord of the Flies. Yet humanity’s hope (at least in the Lower Mainland) may lie with that same young man in his trying to protect the
target of the violence. At least four problems remain: 1) a very small percentage of people can cause an incredible amount of grief; 2) “normal” people can be easily convinced to join in; 3) we are entirely unprepared for the above; and 4) recommendations of previously solicited investigations and reports – eg. the review of the 1994 riot – are ignored.

Local vacancy rates remain high Abbotsford rental rates have remained relatively steady and unchanged over the last year, according to the latest Àgures from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). A new survey reveals the city has one of the highest vacancy rates in the country at 6.6 per cent, while the average rate in Canada decreased slightly to 2.5 per cent in April from 2.9 per cent the year before. The lowest rates were found in Winnipeg and Regina (0.7 per cent), followed by Quebec at one per cent, Toronto at 1.6 per cent and Kingston at 1.7 per cent. The highest rates were in Windsor (9.4 per cent), Kelowna and Abbotsford (6.6 per cent) and Charlottetown (4.9 per cent). CMHC economist Carol Frketich said the rental unit supply rose as tenants in purpose-built apartment buildings bought their own homes or moved into secondary suites or investor-owned condos not covered under the survey. Many apartment buildings are now offering free rent on one-year leases to attract tenants. The average rent for a two bedroom apartment in Abbotsford jumped 1.9 per cent in April to $793, up from $783 the year before. Metro Vancouver experienced a similar trend, with rents increasing from $1,150 to $1,181. Shinder Gill 604.832.0540

The survey also found that the rental apartment availability rate in Canada was 4.3 per cent in April 2011, down from 5.4 per cent in April 2010. Availability rates were highest in Windsor (11.3 per cent), Sherbrooke (8.7 per cent), London (8.3 per cent), Abbotsford (8.1 per cent) and Kelowna (8.0 per cent). The lowest rates were found in Winnipeg (1.1 per cent), Regina (1.7 per cent), St. John’s (2.6 per cent) and Quebec (2.8 per cent). CMHC points out that year-over-year comparisons of average rents can be slightly misleading because rents in newly built structures are often higher than in existing buildings. Overall, the average rent in existing structures across Canada increased 2.2 per cent between April 2010 and April 2011, slightly higher than what was observed between April 2009 and April 2010 (1.8 per cent).

New agricultural trust Funds will preserve, protect and promote agri interests A new fund is being put in place to help “preserve, protect and promote agriculture in the city of Abbotsford. The Agricultural Enhancement Endowment Fund is going to provide money for those who work in the local agribusiness – from university researchers to farmers – to promote agricultural interests, said Mayor George Peary. “In 2005, the City of Abbotsford applied to the
Provincial Agricultural Land Commission to exclude lands from the Agricultural Land Reserve for industrial development to facilitate new job creation and economic growth, said Peary. “As part of this, the city committed through the City in the Country plan to ensure there will be a net benefit to agriculture from this process. The source of the funds will be from developers who rezone
properties. The first payment was $308,680 from Vanderpol Industries. On Monday, city council gave its approval for the Abbotsford Community Foundation to administer the fund. A board of directors is currently in the works. Peary expects applications for the funding will be accepted by the end of the year. The agreement is available from the city’s website: www. abbotsford.ca.
Fresh approach to cancer care
A new cancer care initiative will soon be unveiled at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital that combines nutrition, exercise and emotional support with standard treatments. Minister of Health and Abbotsford West MLA Michael de Jong recently announced funding for the
local expansion of the InspireHealth program, which has been operating in Vancouver since 1997. It will be rolling out in three other cities, including Victoria, Kelowna and Prince George, as part of Healthy Families BC. The initiative aims at improving cancer care delivery and
teaching patients how to support their own health and recovery. Some of the programs include cooking classes, yoga and stress reduction courses. InspireHealth will be phased in this September and is expected to be fully functional by next September. The Ministry of
Health is providing $2.5 million in startup funding. Another $2.5 million from the Provincial Health Services Authority will provide up to 12 additional medical doctors. For more information, visit www. inspirehealth.ca or w w w. h e a l t hy f a m i liesbc.ca.

University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) marketing student Laura Ullock has been crowned Intern of the Year. The 24-year-old was given the title after winning the latest Abbotsford News contest on Monday night at Finnegan’s Pub and was ”absolutely thrilled” with the win. ”I was a competitor in last year’s Intern competition and I worked even harder this year to make it into the final three,” said Ullock. The Toronto native competed against 19 other UFV students for the $5,000 grand prize and summer internship with the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC) marketing department. “It is always exciting to see everyone come together for this event – the experience that Laura will gain at the AESC is invaluable,” said Jenn Schotts, one of the event organizers with the News. Ullock said she’s excited about the opportunities the internship

will present and is ready to get started. ”I am looking forward to the challenges that this summer internship has to offer. I would definitely recommend other business students to participate in this competition next year.” The contest began in May with students divided into 10 teams of two and partnered with corporate business sponsors in the community. Each team created a marketing plan, a commercial and a full-page advertisement targeting the 18- to 35-yearold demographic. They also helped promote an event for AESC. Throughout the contest, votes poured in worldwide, from Switzerland to South Korea. While team Travel Best Bets was eleminated, Brittany Todd and Corbin Lock were brought back at the finale as the wildcard team. Melody Martins of Mission was the lucky voter who received a getaway to Victoria with accommodation at Parkside Victoria Resort & Spa included along with flights.
A suspicious-looking email sent to an Abbotsford businessman asking for a large order of flyers is suspected to be a phishing scam. Subodh Sharma, who runs Value Printing Advertising, said he received an email from “Harry Daves” asking for 60,000 flyers, who then quickly agreed to the $3,600 price without explaining what the flyers were for. A subsequent Google search revealed that “Harry Daves” has sent similar emails to companies all over the world, including Sweden, Australia and Georgia state. Sharma reported the contact to police. Phishing scams seek personal and banking information in order to commit fraud.

Matt Letkeman, pictured above battling for a rebound during his high school days with the Yale Lions, has been picked for Canada’s U19 team. He travels to Latvia for the FIBA U19 Championships.
Four members of the W.J. Mouat Hawks highlight the local content on the provincial under-18 football team. Hawks defensive backs Deion Bain and Nathan Henczel, linebacker Jake Heathcote, and offensive lineman Dairien Silva will travel with Team B.C. to Lethbridge, Alta. next month (July 9-15) for the Football Canada Cup. Also selected to Team B.C. were Dallas Yassinsky of the Abbotsford Collegiate Panthers and Kent Hicks of the Robert Bateman Timberwolves. Mouat’s four-man contingent is second only to the Mount Douglas Rams of Victoria, who put five players on the squad. Bain is a returnee from last year’s provincial team, which won bronze at the Canada Cup, while Henczel, Heathcote and Silva are first-timers. That three of the four Hawks play on the defensive side of the ball suggests Mouat will be a tough outfit to score on next season. “I think we’ll have a pretty strong defence,” Mouat head coach Denis Kelly said. “It’ll be a good experience for them over the summer.” Yassinsky, a receiver, was eighth in receiving yardage during the 2010 AA regular season with 254 yards on 18 catches. Hicks, a defensive lineman, was a standout for the T-Wolves during their inaugural football campaign last fall.

event was a sixth-place result in 1987, and Letkeman would love to eclipse that. “I want to win – do something that no one’s done before. Why not?” he said. “At the same time, I have no idea what to expect. The teams are going to be good – it’s the World Championships.” For Letkeman, the only thing better than making his international debut for Canada would have been playing alongside Marek Klassen, his former high school teammate. Klassen, a point guard, just finished up a stellar freshman year at Point Loma Nazarene University, an NAIA program in San Diego. He was invited to the Canadian U19 tryout, but didn’t make the cut. “That actually hurt me a lot,” Letkeman said. “I didn’t see it coming. It’s tough – he’s my boy and everything, and I was really looking forward to having the opportunity to play with him again.”
opened in Toronto, Letkeman was worried that a nagging hamstring injury would prevent him from attending. But he powered through. “Going in, my goal was to attack in the paint and finish strong inside, rebound strong and be aggressive,” he said. “I didn’t want to play outside of myself and outside of my game, and I felt like that’s what I did.” Making the junior national team caps a dizzying rise for Letkeman, who now finds himself playing alongside highly touted NCAA-bound players like Sim Bhullar, a 7’4” centre from Brampton, Ont. who’s ticketed for Xavier University, and Kevin Pangos of Holland Landing, Ont., a point guard headed to Gonzaga University. At the FIBA U19 Worlds, Team Canada is in a group with Lithuania, Croatia and South Korea. Canada’s best finish at the

Sweeting pointed out the organization also distributed upwards of $100,000 during the 2010-11 season through 50/50 draws. Proceeds from
