Seven receive the order City honours those who serve community Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News
Seven outstanding citizens were honoured on Monday night during the annual Order of Abbotsford ceremony. An often emotional Mayor George Peary presided over the ceremony. Peary spoke of the amalgamation of Abbotsford and Matsqui and how the first recipient of the night, former Mayor George Ferguson, played a huge role in the creation of the city. “He recognized the value of working together,” said Peary. “George Ferguson is an icon.” Ferguson began his political career in 1969 as an alderman for the District of Sumas. After only one term he successfully ran for mayor. In 1972, the Village of Abbotsford and the District of Sumas amalgamated, with Ferguson as its mayor. He held the position until 1995 when Abbotsford and Matsqui joined together. At that time, Ferguson was again elected mayor and served until 2002. Ferguson returned as mayor in 2005 and retired in 2008. Other recipients of the Order of Abbotsford were: Q Karen Matty – She has been involved in construc-

Nine more employees of the City of Abbotsford passed the $75,000 salary level in 2010. According to the year-end financial report examined by council yesterday afternoon, 178 municipal employees (excluding police) earned more than $75,000. In 2009, 169 reached that level. Fifty-five employees broke the $100,000 mark in 2010, as compared to 53 in the previous year. Final elected officials earnings for 2010 were also released. PIZZUTO Mayor George Peary received $87,416 plus $13,639 in expenses for a total of $101,056, compared to $96,077 in 2009. City councillor earnings varied, depending on expenses and indemnity paid for attending water and sewer commission meetings or for acting as mayor. Coun. Moe Gill topped the list with $41,983
($35,618 in earnings plus $6,365 expenses). At the other end of the pay scale was Coun. Bill MacGregor who earned $32,414 ($31,719 plus $695 in expenses). MacGregor earned less than the $34,700 base pay given councillors because he took a personal, unpaid leave in 2010. In accordance with the Financial Information Act, the city must list all employees making more than $75,000. The act does not include police departments. Top earners The following is a list of salaries and expenses for the top five paid city employees, excluding police: 1. Frank Pizzuto, city manager, $226,782 plus $8,546 expenses 2. Denies stabbing Brar admits he planned and took part in swarming Ashley WRAY Abbotsford News
Twenty-four-year-old Shavinder “Shevy” Brar was sentenced to five years in prison on Tuesday morning for the 2008 stabbing murder of Harmin “Harvey” Hans, who was 18 at the time. In Chilliwack Supreme Court, Judge William Grist decided that Brar will also have a lifetime firearms and ammunition ban and will have to provide a DNA sample. Brar was initially charged with second-degree murder, along with 23-year-old Amrit Gill. Recently, Brar pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. Grist said that while the accused organized and participated in the attack on Hans, he did not produce the weapon that killed him. According to evidence, Hans was punched, tasered and then stabbed in the neck. Grist considered Brar’s youth, lack of a criminal record and his prospects of rehabilitation. He will serve four years and five months, after time served. The sentencing followed a full day of deliberation on Monday, which
Harvey Hans was murdered in 2008. was attended by friends and family of Hans, Brar and Gill. Tensions ran high in the court both days, with between seven and nine sheriffs in the room at all times. On Monday, Crown counsel’s Carolyn Lawlor outlined the events of May 24, 2008 that saw Hans attacked by “a mob waiting to swarm an individual,” outside of his home on Ridgeview Drive. She argued that Brar had planned the attack after learning that Hans had punched his younger brother earlier in the evening.
While Crown admitted it is still unknown who stabbed Hans, the group of approximately eight men “all went knowing the intent.” Crown suggested a seven year sentence for Brar. Defence lawyer, Jeff Ray, was looking for a four to four-and-a-half year sentence. He argued that while Brar had planned on confronting Hans, he didn’t know about the weapons, he didn’t stab Hans, and he still doesn’t know who did. “He wanted to confront him in a physical manner, but not with weapons... leading to death.” Ray also mentioned that since being released on bail, Brar has maintained employment, has a long-term girlfriend, and had to move from Abbotsford because of safety concerns. On Tuesday morning, prior to the sentencing, Brar offered a meek apology. “I’m very sorry... I made a mistake,” he said. Afterwards, Hans’ family gathered in front of the courthouse to reflect on the judge’s decision, which they called “lenient.” “No matter what the duration of the sentence, we will never get Harvey back,” said one member on behalf of the family. “The people responsible for this are only getting a slap on the wrist.” Gill’s case continues this week in Chilliwack.

A beloved flag It’s hard to believe Canada’s flag, the Maple Leaf, was the subject of contentious and divisive debate before it was adopted in 1965 to replace the venerable Red Ensign. It has now become one of our most beloved symbols, and it’s one of the most recognized flags in the world. In fact, travelers still abide by the rule of thumb that when venturing to difficult lands, a Canadian flag sewn onto a lapel or backpack will enhance their safety. But it almost didn’t happen. When Prime Minister Lester Pearson decided it was time for Canada to have its own distinct flag, the leader of the opposition Conservatives, John Diefenbaker, would have none of it. Despite clinging to a slim minority government, Pearson persisted. A committee was formed, designs commissioned then discussed, and the rest is history. But in and of itself a flag is
just a graphic design. It’s how a country’s citizens see themselves, and how they carry themselves in the world, that imparts a flag with meaning. In that regard, George F.G. Stanley’s design, an 11-point red maple leaf on a field of white bracketed by two red bars, has been an overwhelming success. Today, when the Maple Leaf flutters in the breeze, we think of an expansive land of disparate natural beauty, populated by welcoming, tolerant, hard-working and fairminded people. We feel pride as a place of peace. We value and celebrate the various cultures that have found their way to us. We revel in our role as an international underdog, in diplomatic and athletic pursuits. We’re humble to a fault. As a statesman and diplomat, Pearson likely already knew all this. Canada already had an identity; we just needed our own symbol to identify with.
Asia-Pacific project marches on Tom
Fletcher
B.C. Views Here are a few items that didn’t make the daily news cycle as B.C. residents prepared for the long-awaited summer of 2011 to begin. • After her meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Ottawa last week, Premier Christy Clark delivered a luncheon speech to the Economic Club of Toronto. Her big talking point for the speech was the rise of the Asia-Pacific region, “the fastest-growing middle class in the history of humanity.” The theme ran through her pitch to the federal government for a share of Ottawa’s largest-ever shipbuilding contract, and her recent meeting with western premiers in Yellowknife. No word on how Clark’s enthusiasm for the west as Canada’s economic engine of the future went over with the Bay Street crowd.
• After the speech, Clark took the wheel of a Chevy Volt electric car for a spin around Toronto with a GM Canada vice-president riding shotgun. She pronounced the car “fantastic technology.” This is pertinent as B.C. residents get ready to pay the latest increase in B.C.’s carbon tax. Effective July 1, the tax on a litre of gasoline rises from 4.45 cents to 5.56, with comparable increases to other carbon fuels. Clark has inherited Gordon Campbell’s aggressive climate change/clean energy agenda, and it’s not yet clear what will become of it. She has committed to the last consumer carbon tax increase in 2012 (up to 6.67 cents on a litre of gas), but the fate of the big hydroelectric push remains uncertain. Those plug-in electric cars need to start selling before Campbell’s gamble of developing increasingly costly electricity starts to pay off. One potential competitor is natural gas-powered vehicles, taking advantage of huge new shale gas discoveries in B.C. and elsewhere. • Campbell’s pending appointment as Canada’s high commissioner in the United Kingdom should warm the hearts of conspiracy theorists. The story broke when Clark was in
Ottawa, and when reporters asked for her take on the appointment, her first comment was that he’ll be a big help in negotiating a free trade agreement with the European Union. Students of Bill Vander Zalm will know that he sees the harmonized sales tax and EU trade as an effort to impose world government and set B.C.’s sales
Clark has inherited Gordon Campbell’s aggressive climate change/clean energy agenda’ tax rate in Europe. Early in his goofy anti-HST campaign, Vander Zalm claimed this was plan B for world government after the conspirators failed to impose a global carbon tax. If the HST is a conspiracy, it’s a mighty big one. Finance Minister Kevin Falcon never tires of reminding people that 140 countries already have value-added taxes, including China and those other
Asia-Pacific tigers that are dominating the world economy. • Douglas College in New Westminster and the Heilongjiang Institute of Science and Technology in Harbin, China have celebrated the graduation of 137 students in their dual-degree business administration program. The program began in 2003, with an exchange of instructors. At the Harbin campus, students take 52 courses to qualify them as specialists in global financial markets and international banking. • By last year, there were 94,000 international students in K-12, post-secondary and language schools in B.C. According to the advanced education ministry, if considered an export service, international education is B.C.’s fifth largest export, accounting for seven per cent of exports from the province. Meanwhile in B.C., discussion of international trade still tends to revolve around lumber and logs. And according to a recent poll, Vander Zalm is still considered by many to be an authority on trade and taxes. It’s time to join the world’s adult conversation. tfletcher@blackpress.ca twitter.com/tomfletcherbc

Fox run needs organizer
The iconic Terry Fox Run is in danger of being cancelled in Abbotsford this fall if a volunteer organizer is not found. The run is entering its 31st year of raising money for cancer research and is scheduled to take place on Sept. 18. “It would be such a shame for the people of Abbotsford to miss out on an opportunity to keep Terry’s legacy alive as every community, no matter how big or small, can make a huge impact, just as Terry learned when a small town of 10,000 people raised over $10,000,” said Donna White, provincial director for B.C. and Yukon of the Terry Fox Foundation. In 1980, Fox ran across Canada in his Marathon
of Hope to raise money for cancer research. Since then, more than $500 million has been raised through the Terry Fox Foundation’s initiatives, such as The Terry Fox Run. The foundation is looking for a run organizer to continue the tradition in Abbotsford this year. The event offers participants the option to run, walk, blade or bike, and also features familyorientated events. For more information contact Donna White at The Terry Fox Foundation by emailing bcyukon@terryfoxrun.org or by calling 1-888-836-9786. For more information about the foundation visit www.terryfox.org.

Canucks AHL affiliation goes to Chicago Wolves The Vancouver Canucks announced a new two-year AHL affiliation agreement with the Chicago Wolves on Monday, snuffing hopeful speculation locally that their top prospects might be stationed in Abbotsford. The Manitoba Moose had been the Canucks’ AHL affiliate since 2001, but with the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers moving to Winnipeg, they were displaced. The Moose are owned by True North Sports and Entertainment, the same group that owns the Winnipeg Jets. The AHL franchise will be moved to St. John’s, Nfld., to serve as the Jets’ affiliate. With the Canucks seeking an AHL dance partner, many local fans were hoping they might be able to work a

deal with the Calgary Flames, who own and run the hockey operations for the Abbotsford Heat. The Canucks affiliation would have undoubtedly been a good fit in Abbotsford, given the NHL club’s huge popularity in the region. But the Flames are two years into a 10-year agreement to play out of the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. “Calgary has a long-term agreement with the City of Abbotsford and they’re comfortable with it and I don’t think they’re looking to move, Canucks assistant general manager Laurence Gilman told the Vancouver Sun last week. The Heat averaged 3,807 fans per game last season, 26th out of 30 AHL teams.

UFV hoopsters to host Spartans at AESC Dan KINVIG
Abbotsford News
Ice is the most familiar sporting surface at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC), but for one evening early next year, hardwood will take precedence. It’s part of an ambitious plan unveiled on Wednesday by the University of the Fraser Valley athletic department to take university basketball to new heights in this city. On Jan. 28, 2012, the Cascades will host the Trinity Western University Spartans in a Canada West regular season doubleheader at the AESC. The UFV and TWU women’s hoopsters will tip things off at 5 p.m., followed by the men’s teams at 7 p.m. Holding a hoops showcase at the AESC – which seats just over 7,000 – represents a massive increase in
scale for the Cascades, whose average attendance for home games at the Envision Athletic Centre is numbered in hundreds rather than thousands. But organizers are excited about the
event’s potential, and hope it will grow into an annual affair. “It has the potential to be great,” enthused David Kent, UFV’s sports information and marketing co-ordinator. “When it comes
to something big like this, it piques everyone’s interest.” Kent is the driving force behind the initiative, and he boasts extensive experience launching large-scale events.
At Carleton University in Ottawa, he set in motion the Capital Hoops Classic – a game between the Carleton Ravens and the Ottawa Gee Gees men’s basketball teams at Scotiabank Place,
If we get 3,500 (fans), I’d be tickled pink.” “It will be an incredible experience to be a part of,” UFV women’s coach Al Tuchscherer said.
the home of the NHL’s Ottawa Senators. “One year, in a blizzard, we still had 9,000 fans. And we don’t usually get those out here (in B.C.),” Kent said. “I can’t see this failing, let’s put it that way.

He was surrounded by his immediate family and passed away peacefully on June 19th. Ronald started up his own company, Online Courier Ltd., in Richmond, BC and successfully served the lower mainland. He retired with his wife Gretchen in Abbotsford, BC in a home he helped design and oversaw being built. They lived there together for 20 years. They were married for 56 years. No service by his request. Your love for us will be forever remembered. And, you will be in our hearts always. Rest in Peace
McRAE Rose Agnes A service will be held for family and friends of Rose Agnes McRae at the Columbarium at the Keremeos Cemetery on July 23rd, 2011 at 1:30 pm. bcclassified.com 604-854-6397

John is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret, sons David and Peter, daughters Jennifer, Susan, Bonnie and eight grandchildren. LEWIS Michael Lewis We are so very sad to announce the death of Mike Llewellyn Lewis on June 23, 2011, following complications after surgery for cancer. He was a staunch Welshman, a teacher, sports fan (rugby in particular) and coach. He taught Social Studies at Abby Junior for 31 years while involving himself in the Swim, Karate and Rotary clubs. He was a founding member of the Abbotsford Rugby Club, not only playing for the club and sitting on the executive, but becoming the coach in 2001, and in 2002, he and Mark Ferguson led the Club to the BC 1st Division Championships. He was so proud of this accomplishment He will be sorely missed by Anne, Susan, Jason and his beloved granddaughter, Bailey Fennellow. He will also be much missed by the Lewis clan back in the U.K. His sister Helen, brothers Winsor and Martin, his son Rob, his niece and nephews, and many cousins. He was a no fuss kind of man and at his request there will be no formal funeral but a small gathering of family and close old friends, at 4 pm, Monday July 4th at 32301 Atwater Crescent, Abbotsford... However, what he really wanted was a Bon Voyage celebration to be held at the Rugby Club and details for this will be announced at a later date...
