Driver testifies he didn’t try to run truck off road

Dan FERGUSON Black Press

For the first five days of his trial, Brent Parent maintained an impassive, guarded demeanour as he heard the evidence against him. That changed this week when he took the stand in his own defence and gave his account of the events of March 13, 2008 in Langley, which led to the death of 21-year-old Abbotsford resident Silas O’Brien, and Parent’s trial on multiple road-rage-related charges, including criminal negligence causing death, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident. Parent, a Langley resident, testified that he did collide with the truck O’Brien and two friends were using to drive to Vancouver International Airport for a holiday trip, but he did not know he’d run over and killed O’Brien until the next day. When Parent’s lawyer, Vincent Michaels, asked his client how he felt at hearing the news, Parent, who had testified in a calm, clear voice until then, was unable to speak for a moment. “Sorry,” the 42-year-old said, removing his eyeglasses and dabbing at his eyes with a tissue. “I felt sick,” he said. “I felt sick to my stomach.” According to Parent, he was driving his Ford F350 diesel pickup quad cab, heading home with his brother after a night out on 16 Avenue near 264 Street, when he was overtaken by another, fastmoving truck, a Chevy Silverado that flashed its high beams at him.

$6 million surplus for district Board of education proposes half for programs Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

Abbotsford schools will be the recipients of more than $3 million in funding for programs and services, after the district recorded a $6.1 million surplus in its 2010-11 budget. The board of education announced the surplus at its regular public meeting on Monday night, when it released its financial report for the year ending June 30, 2011. The report showed operating expenditures of $153.2 million compared to revenues of about $159.3 million. Board chair Cindy Schafer said the extra funds are a welcome reversal of the situation in the 2009-10 school year, when a $6 million shortfall resulted in the elimination of more than 70 jobs, a $3.7 million reduction in allocation funding to schools, and a $2 million decrease in centralized departments. The shortfall was due mainly to cuts in Ministry of Education funding. Schafer said the district went into a “serious pro-active mode” following that budget year in order to ensure possible further cuts wouldn’t be so drastic. “We became a little more cautious and prudent,” she said. School district treasurer Ray Velestuk said the belt-

tightening was responsible for a good portion of this year’s surplus, as the district recorded $1.8 million in savings from department budgets and utilities. Also contributing to the surplus was additional Ministry of Education per-student funding because of lower-thananticipated enrolment. “The district is in a really good financial position,” Velestuk said. The board of education has proposed that $3.35 million of the surplus be designated as follows: T $1 million to local schools at a rate of $40 or $50 per student to be spent at the discretion of administrators; T $300,000 for a two-year intervention project for elementary kids in high-vulnerability neighbourhoods; T $1.5 million for implementation of the district’s strategic plan, which in part involves improving student access to programs and services, and use of technology. T $150,000 for a two-year extension of the district’s English as a Second Language plan, which was cut in the 2009-10 budget; and T $400,000 for a three-year plan to train teachers and other staff in using technology purchased for the district. The rest of the surplus will remain in the budget as a cushion for future expenses.

Driver was ‘miffed’

Accused in hit-and-run case denies road rage From A1

“The high beams came on and stayed on,” he said. Parent said he tapped his brakes to get the other vehicle to back off, and when it tried to go around him and pass, he accelerated. He heard a “rubbing noise” and saw the other truck go into the ditch. Parent called his behaviour “stupid and childish.” Parent denied deliberately turning into the other truck to force it off the road. He said he took the long way back to the scene of the accident to give himself and the people in the other truck time to cool off. “I was kind of in shock,” he said. “I figured that somebody would be not O’BRIEN happy.” Parent claimed as he approached the overturned truck and slowed down with his doors locked and windows closed, he could see three men by the side of the road, waving their arms and shouting.

DAN FERGUSON

Black Press

Crown prosecutor Donna Ballyk cross-examined Brent Parent this week on his version of events. “I could hear some yelling and it wasn’t pretty,” he said. “I think they were swearing and stuff.” It appeared to him that two of the men were preparing to attack his truck, either kicking it or throwing something “that looked like a rock” at it. “Three guys in the middle of the night, that late, the way things are these days, you don’t stop,” Parent said. As he accelerated away, he heard a loud

bang. He assumed something had been thrown at his truck. He did not report the incident to police, he said, because he assumed everyone in the truck was “fine.” Under cross-examination by Crown prosecutor Donna Ballyk, Parent insisted he was “miffed” when he thought the other truck had “high-beamed” him, but he wasn’t in a rage. “I felt irritated,” he said. “Annoyed?” Ballyk asked. “Yes.” “It bugged you.” “Yes,” Parent said. Under further questioning by the prosecutor, Parent said it was possible the other truck only appeared to have flashed its high beams because it rode higher than his truck on bigger tires. Earlier in the trial, his brother Lloyd Teneycke testified that he had fallen asleep in his brother’s truck only to be awakened by a “rubbing” noise and the Ford pickup truck veering. He told the court that after the collision with the Silverado, his brother drove back to see if anyone was hurt, but sped away because the young men from the other truck appeared angry and aggressive. Teneycke said he and his brother had no idea they’d hit anyone until the next morning when they heard it on the news. Closing arguments in the trial are not expected until October, to give both defence and prosecution time to review written transcripts of the testimony.

Shooting may have Bacon link Man gunned down in Surrey was associated with Dhak group

Kevin DIAKIW Black Press

The shooting of a man in Surrey last Friday may be linked to the gangland slaying of Jonathan Bacon in Kelowna last month. Jujhar Singh Khun-Khun is a member of the Dhak group, which is linked to a few other local gangs, believed to be in opposition to the Hells Angels. Police received a call of a shooting at 9:30 p.m. Friday in the 10100-block of 144 Street. They arrived to find KhunKhun shot. He was taken to hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Sgt. KNOCK-OFFS SEIZED Police seized almost 300 knock-off designer items valued at $43,000 on Sunday from the Abbotsford Flea Market. Const. Ian MacDonald said the items included jeans, purses, wallets, belts, hoodies and track suits sporting counterfeit labels such as True Religion, Juicy Couture, Affliction, Christian Audigier, Louis Vuitton and Gucci. A 53-year-old woman was tending the goods, but no charges have yet been laid. In July, police seized more than 1,000 knock-off duds from the flea market at a booth being manned by a 32-year-old man.

DELEGATION VISITS A delegation from the city of Ludhiana, Punjab is visiting Abbotsford for three days. The group, led by the city’s mayor, will be in town Sept. 21-24. They will tour the city and visit industrial, agricultural and residential areas. The trip wraps up on Friday night with a dinner. The visit is in response to Abbotsford’s trip to India in February of 2010. Ludhiana has an estimated population of 1.7 million and is a major industrial center of northern India.

GANG WARNING The Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit’s (CFSEU) Gang Task Force has issued a public warning that anyone linked to the Duhre and Dhak groups could be at risk, following the shooting of one of their alleged associates in Surrey last Friday. The attack on Jujhar Singh Khun-Khun is being investigated for possible links to the mass shooting in Kelowna on Aug. 14 that killed Jonathan Bacon of Abbotsford and wounded four others. Police have previously identified the Duhre Group as the main gang currrently operating in the community. Police issued a similar warning about Jonathan Bacon and his two brothers – Jamie and Jarrod – in late 2008.

Water memorandum put on hold Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News

A proposed water agreement between the City of Abbotsford and the District of Mission has been put on hold. The Abbotsford Mission Water Sewer Commission (AMWSC) has unanimously decided to defer the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) until after the municipal elections on Nov. 19.

The commission was drafting an update to the services agreements which govern the regional water and wastewater partnership between the two communities, which include the allocation of existing resources, cost agreements and housekeeping issues. The modifications became necessary after Mission voted against a joint plan to pursue a public-private partnership (P3) to help create a new

water source at Stave Lake. Abbotsford decided to move forward alone. Abbotsford voters will be asked if they support moving forward on a P3 project and could reject the idea, which would affect the proposed MOU. But there are other reasons for delaying the agreement. Mission Mayor James Atebe agrees that the delay is needed.

‘Did that really happen?’ From A4

set of chat logs in 2009. “There was something seriously wrong when a 35-year-old was professing his love for a teenage girl.” Kleisinger went to police with his discovery, and Murray was assigned to the case. As months passed and Kleisinger continued to monitor the conversations, a picture emerged of an adult man who was grooming a young girl for a sexual relationship. Reise and the girl not only communicated online, but often met in person. He bought her gifts, such as a bicycle and an iPod, while promising other presents, including a puppy, a cruise when she turned 16, a cellphone and concert tickets. Kleisinger, a heavyduty equipment operator, also uncovered details about Reise’s past. Although he had no prior sex-related convictions, Reise had a long criminal history for property crimes, theft and other offences in Canada and the U.S. The online conversations became more suggestive and police had enough for an arrest and charges in October 2009. In addition to the two offences to which Reise pleaded guilty, he was charged with administering a drug to commit an offence and sexual assault. Those charges were later stayed. Reise was released on bail, and Kleisinger continued to keep tabs on him, reporting his findings to Murray. Kleisinger discovered that Reise breached his conditions within an hour of leaving the courthouse by posting

Facebook messages about Kleisinger’s stepdaughter, saying she was responsible for his arrest. He was arrested and released on bail a second time, with stricter conditions, including to not use a computer. Instead, Reise used his cellphone to post online messages. Kleisinger then posed online as a teen girl, and made arrangements to meet Reise at a certain location. Police were waiting for him when he arrived, and he was again arrested. This

time, he was refused bail. Reise was scheduled to go to trial on the charges, but issued his guilty plea in April of this year and was sentenced to one year in prison. He was given double credit for the six months he had already served, and was released two days later. Canada Border Service agents were waiting for him and drove him across the border, where he was arrested by U.S. marshals for parole violations in Pennsylvania.

Kleisinger said he was ecstatic to know that Reise would remain in prison. He credits his stepdaughter for having the courage to speak with police and agree to testify at the trial if it had gone ahead. He said she is doing well. Kleisinger still keeps a folder on his computer desktop of all the information he gathered during the investigation. “Every once in a while, I look at that file folder, and just shake my head: Did that really happen?”

ABBOTSFORD NEWS I Thursday, September 22, 2011

Beware online predators The story of Robert Kleisinger is a chilling reminder for all parents of the predators that lurk online. It also serves as encouragement – that due diligence can result in rescuing a youngster from a highly dangerous situation, and might even result in putting one of these ghouls in prison. Kudos to Kleisinger, and to the Abbotsford Police for calling attention to his actions by officially commending him. Kleisinger’s attention was alerted when he saw a photo of what appeared to be adult man communicating online with his 15-year-old stepdaughter. The stepfather set up a monitoring program on her computer, and after gathering evidence, he went to police. As an investigating officer and Kleisinger continued to monitor the conversations, it became apparent the man was grooming the young teen for a sexual relationship. Reise and the girl not only communicated online, but often met in person. He bought her gifts, such as a bicycle and

an iPod, while promising other presents, including a puppy, a cruise when she turned 16, a cellphone and concert tickets. It was also discovered he had a lengthy criminal history involving property crimes and theft in Canada and the U.S. Ultimately, the investigation led to the laying of charges, and eventual sentencing in April of Jason (Booda) Reise, 35, for sexual interference and communicating via a computer to lure a child under 16. He was then handed over to American authorities for parole violations in the States. A predator has been put behind bars, for a considerable time. All parents must pay heed to this case, for many more like it exist. There are a host of online creeps out there, waiting to prey on young teens. Often, all that stands between potential victims and their hunters is an attentive, communicative parent.

B.C. imports American-style politics Tom

B.C. Views The Americanization of Canadian and B.C. politics is gathering speed now that legislated four-year terms are finally settling in at the federal and provincial level. Scheduled elections are an important reform, but the downside is that they seem to lead inexorably to constant campaigning. The latest example is the B.C. Liberal Party’s website and radio campaign directed at upstart B.C. Conservative leader John Cummins. “Strange days indeed,” NDP leader Adrian Dix mused on his Facebook page. “The Liberals, after a week of nasty attacks on the NDP, launched an anti-John Cummins website. Absent a policy agenda, the Liberals seem to want to blame others for their problems. This too will backfire as Ms. Clark is again misreading the public mood. People are demanding substance in politics

these days, not photo ops and negative attacks.” I see nothing strange in Dix rushing to the defence of Cummins, who represents the NDP’s best hope for a move into the legislature’s west wing. It is a bit odd for Dix to accuse others of lacking policy, as he leads a party that has been distinguished by little other than negative political tactics since its near-death experience in 2001. This is almost as strange as the B.C. Liberals damning Cummins as a politician who “says one thing and does another.” Yeah, that can really come back to bite you. There hasn’t been much of an antiDix effort yet, but you can be sure there is one sitting on the shelf, prepared for Clark’s recently abandoned fall election plan. The “nasty attacks” Dix complained about were focused on his federal party’s sudden preference for Quebec seats in the House of Commons, and sniping about which Premier Clark hired more political staff – Christy or Glen? And it was the NDP who started the negative cycle with their own TV ad, featuring “Campbell Crunch” and

“Christy Crunch” cereals, both “loaded with HST.” (I can put to rest the ghastly rumour that the B.C. Liberal war room will soon unleash a gang of angry, unemployed HST stick-men.) The U.S. tactic of going negative early, to define your rivals before they can define themselves, has worked spectacu-

Absent a policy agenda, the Liberals seem to want to blame others for their problems larly for Stephen Harper’s Conservatives. They scorched federal Liberal leaders Stéphane Dion and Michael Ignatieff, and public distaste for these methods does not seem to have hurt them. The anti-Cummins campaign has a similar style, and there are indications that it may have been produced in Toronto. The website, canttrustcummins.

ca, uses a bug-eyed photo of the former fisherman-MP that makes him look like a ray gun-wielding alien from the movie Mars Attacks. In fact our whole political scene is starting to look like a rerun of a bad 1990s movie. It was Reform BC that rose from the ashes of Social Credit, and inspired a desperate Gordon Campbell to sing country music and take a hard line on aboriginal relations, to stitch the ruptured right back together. Cummins defined himself as a ReformAlliance-Conservative MP by railing against treaties, and that continues to be the core of his thin policy book. His other two main ideas are also pure rural populism. He vows to scrap the carbon tax and suggests that municipalities should cut their costs to fund transit. Voters will have a better idea by the end of this week if Clark’s plan for “defending and creating jobs” is really new policy, or merely more photo ops. B.C. has had its first taste of California-style tax revolt. Now we have two years ahead that will be dominated by relentlessly negative, continuous campaigning. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

A Liberal Freudian slip

Listening to the B.C. Liberal’s radio attack ad on BC Conservative leader John Cummins what struck me was the use of the phrase, “Just what we need, another unprincipled politician.” According to Freud, slips of the tongue reveal a “source outside the speech” – a manifestation of the unconscious. In the use of “another,” the Liberals are stating that B.C. politics already contains at least one unprincipled politician. Indeed, the context and usage of “another,” suggests that B.C. politics is infested with “unprincipled politicians.” In fact, it can be read as a statement that

A13

all or nearly all of B.C.’s politicians are “unprincipled.” Is the statement a manifestation of an unconscious acknowledgement by the B.C. Liberals that the behaviour of the Liberals and the NDP has been, is and will continue to be “unprincipled?” Is it an honest (being subconscious) statement that the only way out of the increasing quagmire B.C. is in, is to turn out our current politicians with their unprincipled behaviour and to seek out new principled leadership and representation? the latter $2,028. Of course, if we go for the P3 option, these rather alarming debt totals do not actually have to be included in the city’s audited reports. The P3 route, however, is sure to cost us more in the long run. To stay in business, private companies must provide returns for their shareholders. And funds borrowed by a private partner come

at a higher interest rate than those borrowed by a municipal government. So, if we go P3 in order to make our city appear less indebted, we would ultimately pay more, while essentially “renting back” our own resources. Maybe it’s time for a change – is anyone out there willing and able to provide good governance after Nov. 19? Regina Dalton

Whether it’s the HST, or the GST/ PST, it is still tax. The real crime is what is taxed, not how it’s taxed. All the efforts and energy put into defeating the HST in favor of GST/PST has gained us nothing. In fact, it may have cost the B.C. taxpayers huge amounts to switch back. The enormous effort to defeat this would have been better spent on fighting to eliminate all sales tax on food, medicines, and any other products ingested by humans that are by design, or natural for the purposes of sustaining human life. This is where the real fight should have been. Ken Thomas

(figures taken from an Aug. 25, 2011 report by DBRS, a full-service rating agency). And here in Abbotsford? Well, we know that the $85-million cost for plan A divided by 140,000 citizens gives us $607 per person. Then there’s the Stave Lake project looming on the horizon. We have heard projected costs ranging from $156 million to $284 million. The former divided by 140,000 gives us $1,114,

of the city. All proceeds from the event go the the BC Cancer Agency – Abbotsford Centre. “This is the second year for the event and the response is wonderful,” said Kate Ludlam of the BC Cancer Agency. While final figures for this year have not been tabulated, Ludlam said more than $93,000 has been raised since the event started last year – all of which has stayed in the community. She credits Esposito, and guest auctioneer Dave Holmberg of Abbotsford’s Bobcat Country Sales, for making the fundraiser a success. Esposito said there is one simple reason he hosts the gala. “To give some hope and share some light ... If you are struggling with this cancerous disease, it’s important to know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.

Guests at Sunday’s cancer fundraiser had the opportunity to ride in a basket crane supplied by the Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service.

About 200 of Abbotsford’s movers and shakers came together on Sunday to sample wine, bid on some items and lend a hand to those fighting cancer.

The second annual An Afternoon In Paradiso, a fundraising event for the BC Cancer Foundation, took place on the weekend and hundreds of people turned out to support the cause. “It’s great to have this kind of community support,” said Paul Esposito, host of the event. “When there’s a need, this community comes together and helps out.” Originally scheduled to take place at Esposito’s vineyard, the location had to be switched to his business, Finnegan’s Pub and Phoenix Lounge, due to the weather. But it didn’t dampen the spirits of those in attendance. Guests enjoyed silent and live auctions, as well as an opportunity to take a quick ride in a basket crane, supplied by the Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service. For a minimum donation of $40, people were raised into the air for a view

Charges for extortion attempt A man charged earlier this year after high school students reported hearing shots fired in a residential neighbourhood is in trouble with the law again. Narinder Gill, 20, was charged last week with unlawful confinement, assault with a weapon, uttering threats and extortion. Const. Ian MacDonald said police received a call on Sept. 11 at about 7:30 p.m. from an 18-year-old male who alleged he had been held in a vehicle and threatened over a debt

that he owed. The amount of the money was in dispute, MacDonald said. Gill was charged the following day and next appears in court today (Thursday) for a bail hearing. He was also charged in April of this year with assault with a weapon, using an imitation firearm and two counts of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose after police received a report of shots being fired from a car in the area of

Blueridge Drive and Townline Road. Five neighbouring schools were locked down for about an hour while police investigated. Gill was charged the following day. And in late July, Gill was found guilty of assault causing bodily harm from an incident that occurred Oct. 21, 2010 in which he used a 2x4 to attack a man at Ellwood Park with whom he had been in a previous altercation.

The process influenced her to put her own name forward. The application process saw Kathleen go through a criminal record check, describe her interests, and do a two-hour training session where she learned about sensitivity to culture and cultural differences. “I really enjoy the volunteer process because you make a friend and become a part of a new family,” said Kathleen. “It’s in you already to do. ABBOTSFORD NEWS I Thursday, September 22, 2011

Heat coach brings new approach News sports reporter Dan Kinvig is in Calgary reporting on Heat players at the Flames’ NHL training camp. CALGARY – The Abbotsford Heat have a new sheriff in town, but he won’t necessarily come out guns a-blazin’. In terms of coaching style, new Heat bench boss Troy Ward seems to be a sharp departure from his predecessor Jim Playfair, who exited the organization in June to take an assistant coaching gig with the New Abbotsford Phoenix Coyotes. Heat coach Troy Playfair brought the fiery Ward will bring intensity of a former player to a much different the head coaching role. I’ll still be the guy who will probably put my arm around them and walk through the airport with them and talk to them, because that’s who I am by nature. Ward doesn’t come across as a disciplinarian, but he calls himself a “day-to-day stickler who has little patience for people who aren’t prepared. “I’m probably going to be pretty intense drill-to-drill (at practice), he said. “I probably don’t have the ebb and flow that some coaches do. I have more of a consistent hammer. It’s like, excellence is tolerated, perfection is preferred. That’s where I’m at. Ward places a strong emphasis on clear-cut communication with players – the “truth aspect, as he calls it. “I define truth as clarity and hope, he explained. “A lot of people in this world think honesty is negativity. Well, if I’m going to belittle a player to death and say I was truthful to them, there isn’t a lot of hope in that message. “(A player) is going to walk out of my office, and he’s going to know the clarity of the situation that we have at hand, and he’s going to know there’s hope. “But he’s going to know how to get to the hope. That’s what’s the most important to me.

Qualifying in Europe

Abbotsford golfer Nick Taylor has survived the first stage of European Tour qualifying school. Needing to finish among the top 21 (plus ties) in Ebreichsdorf, Austria to advance to the second of three stages, Taylor carded rounds of 69, 69, 71 and 65 to end up tied for sixth at 14 under par. Taylor, the former No. 1-ranked amateur in the world who is in the midst of his first full season as a pro, moves on to second-stage qualifying, which runs Dec. 2-5 in Spain. • Fellow Abbotsford golfer Adam Hadwin is in Venezuela this week, representing Canada in a World Cup of Golf qualifying tournament. Hadwin and Roger Sloan of Merritt comprise the Canadian team. The tournament format sees teams playing best ball on Days 1 and 3, and alternating ball on Days 2 and 4. The Canadians will be aiming to finish in the top three out of 14 nations and earn entry into the $7.5 million Omega Hills World Cup, to be played in China in November.

The injury bug bit the Rick Hansen Hurricanes hard on Friday, as they dropped a 28-24 decision to Mount Boucherie of Kelowna. Already missing star running back/linebacker Jordon Gmur, the Hurricanes saw quarterback Alex Ho and receiver/safety Daniel Okello go down in the first half. Nevertheless, Hansen nearly battled all the way back from a 24-12 deficit, only to fall short after a pair of twopoint convert attempts failed. Harpreet Dhaliwal had a huge game for the Hurricanes, rushing for three TDs, while Sukh Dhaliwal caught a 30yard scoring pass from Ho in the first quarter. “Our kids did a great job of hanging in there and giving us a chance to win,” head coach Paul Gill noted. Ho, the Hurricanes’ Grade 10 starting pivot, suffered a broken kneecap on a seemingly innocent tackle. Gill said the injury could potentially be season-ending. T-WOLVES WILL TAKE IT The Robert Bateman Timberwolves were the lone

local team to win on the weekend, edging Nanaimo District 19-14 at home on Friday. But T-Wolves coach Rick MacDonald termed it an “ugly” victory. “The buys actually didn’t leave the field that happy,” he said. “They know we’re capable of much better. “We were just a little sloppy, shot ourselves in the foot a few times. We’re not overly proud of it, but we’ll take it.” Freddy Lyhne rushed for two majors for Bateman, while John Beckerleg also found the end zone in the win. BULLDOGS BITE PANTHERS The Abbotsford Collegiate Panthers found themselves in tough in their season opener at Rotary Stadium, as they dropped a 42-7 decision to the province’s No. 1-ranked AA squad, the John Barsby Bulldogs. But Panthers head coach Jay Fujimura said his players had nothing to hang their heads about. Abby Collegiate played the Bulldogs extremely tough in the first half – they trailed 14-7 late in the second quarter, but Barsby’s Nathan Berg scored a kickoff-return TD that proved to be

the turning point. “They’re a big, strong, physical team,” Fujimura said. “We knew that coming in, but we wanted to get that game for our guys so they know where they need to get to for the end of the season.” Michael Nguyen scored the Panthers’ lone TD on a seven-yard run, while the quarterback/receiver duo of Carter Williams and Dallas Yassinsky demonstrated great chemistry. Tanner Storoshenko, a fullback and linebacker, was named the Panthers’ player of the game. ROAD WEEKEND Abbotsford’s senior football teams will be road warriors this weekend, as all four squads play away from home on Friday. Mouat heads to North Vancouver to play Carson Graham (3:45 p.m., Carson Graham Secondary), while Hansen hits the road to face Langley (1 p.m., McLeod Athletic Park). Bateman takes on Hugh Boyd in Richmond (3 p.m., Hugh Boyd Secondary), while Abby Collegiate visits Moscrop (3:30 p.m., Burnaby Lakes).

It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of our loved one, Annie (Mummies Special Little Girl). As hard as its been since she passed away we know how lucky and fortunate we have been to have had Annie in our lives. It is ironic how we spent so much time teaching her so many tricks over the years when in reality we should not have been teaching her but learning from her. Annie was full of life, always happy, full of love, never judging, loyal, had no ulterior motives; what you saw was real and what you got. She did not have a mean bone in her whole body and loved all she met. Above all she was a true best friend who was always there for us. Annie loved nothing more than snuggling with any of our family. She also loved to hunt grasshoppers and eat mummies homemade treats. Sadly Annie was predeceased by her best friend and birth mother Susie whom she will now again get to snuggle and play with. She will truly be missed but never, ever forgotten by all who knew her. We would like to thank Dr. Hofs and his two assistants Deb and Tanis for the many years of excellent care and support they have always provided to our entire family. Love Heidi (Mummy), Mike (Daddy), Grandma’s Wilma, Gerda, Elena, Grandpa Ben and Uncle Chris. In lieu of flowers or donations we ask for what Annie would have wanted and that is for you to give all of your loved ones (pets or people) big hugs, kisses and of course lots of treats. Thank you Annie for everything you have done for all of us and for the important things you have taught us, we truly respect and appreciate you and will always remember you.
