A loaded gravel barge slammed into one of the pilings of the train bridge which spans the Fraser River between Abbotsford and Mission. The swing bridge was open during the Tuesday afternoon incident. Gravel had to be moved off the barge before it could be dislodged. There was no damage to the bridge.

Vulnerable farms plagued by theft
0S 6 YEAR
Abbotsford News
Abbotsford Police believe they are homing in on a group of people responsible for a rash of livestock and fowl thefts throughout the Fraser Valley. Const. Ian MacDonald said the Abbosford Police Department’s livestock enforcement officer (LEO) has identified “people of interest” in the thefts of chickens, pigeons, ducks, goats and sheep. The thefts began last fall at farms in Abbotsford, Langley and Chilliwack. The most recent ones occurred overnight Sunday at a farm in the 500 block of Gladwin Road in Abbotsford, where 325 chickens and eggs were stolen, and on Tuesday in the 33700 block of Vye Road, where tools and $5,000 worth of chickens were lifted. “We think it’s an organized group of people who have a certain knack for livestock and
the resale of livestock,” MacDonald said. He said the culprits either sell the animals for slaughter, or through auctions and online sites – avenues through which buyers would not know the creatures were stolen. He said the thieves are generally targeting smaller operations that might not have as many security measures as larger sites. As well, they tend to have some “inside knowledge” of the farm. For example, two pigeon farms hit in the last few months were going through transition and nobody was on site. One was in the process of being sold, and the operator of the other had recently passed away. The two sites were among three hit in November and February, resulting in the heist of 5,300 pigeons that are sold as meat – known as squab – for $4 to $10 each.
Vancouver farm team displaced in NHL move Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
On Tuesday, the NHL’s worst-kept secret was finally confirmed – the Atlanta Thrashers are moving to Winnipeg. That shift means the Vancouver Canucks are now officially lacking an American Hockey League affiliate. The Manitoba Moose had served as the Canucks’ AHL farm team, but with an NHL club setting up shop in Winnipeg, they’ll be displaced. St. John’s, Nfld. is reportedly the front-runner to land the Moose. The franchise, wherever it ends up, will serve as the farm team for the new Winnipeg NHL club, leaving the Canucks seeking a new AHL partner. It’s re-ignited hopeful speculation among local Canucks fans that the popular NHL franchise’s prospects could be stationed here. But such a move would require a will on both the part of the Canucks, and the Calgary Flames – owners of the Abbotsford Heat AHL franchise – to reach a deal. At this point, both parties are holding their cards close. “I’m not interested in engaging in speculative discussion,” Flames president Ken King

said on Tuesday. “We have good partners (in Abbotsford), we love the market, and we have a long-term arrangement. We’re not looking for longterm alternatives.” Canucks general manager Mike Gillis told a Vancouver newspaper that his team is exploring its options. “We’ve got multiple opportunities,” he said. “We’re reluctant to push anything while this (Stanley Cup final) is going on. We’ll go full bore then.” The Heat just completed the second season of a 10-year contract to play out of the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. The notion of the Flames and Canucks negotiating a dual affiliation agreement in Abbotsford was bandied about in the Vancouver media on Tuesday. The Heat’s supply fee agreement with arena operator Global Spectrum guarantees the hockey team a break-even budget of up to $5.7 million annually. The City of Abbotsford covered a shortfall of $450,637 in 2009-10, and the estimated deficit for 2010-11 will be in the $1.2 million range. Abbotsford averaged 3,807 fans per game last season, 26th out of 30 AHL teams. An affiliation with the Canucks, given the team’s massive popularity in the region, is potentially a profitable fit.

A SPECTACULAR AFTERNOON OF HYMNS AND INSPIRATION!
Industrial area streets among parking alternatives From A5
across the street. Further regulations would prohibit trailers on semi-tractors and loaded dump trucks. Wear added that only a few houses in Abbotsford meet those requirements. Mayor George Peary estimated there are approximately 10 such properties. “We want to make sure that where it is allowed, it’s not an annoyance,” said Peary. He added that the truck would also need to be partially blocked from neighbours with either a tree line or fence. Ideally, he said, there would be more truck parking areas in the city, but properly zoned land is expensive. Often, the cost for the
commercial land would not be covered by the rental fees from truckers. The report also suggests a pilot project, where specific streets in industrial areas would be used for overnight commercial truck parking, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Fast-tracking development applications for new or expanded commercial truck parking facilities on properties that aren’t located within the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) is another initiative, as is promoting the use of gravel pits and sites belonging to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. The report and the input gathered from Tuesday night will eventually come before council for a decision.

Warning to farm operators From A5
Also this year, close to 20 Boer goats were taken from a property on Downes Road in Abbotsford on four or five separate occasions. A series of livestock thefts were reported to the Langley RCMP in March, including 22 lambs, six ducks and 65 chickens from three properties. One of those farms was
also targeted in December and had 17 ducks taken. A farm in Chilliwack was hit in November, when seven pregnant goats – each valued at between $500 and $700 – were stolen. Six of them were later located on a property in Langley. At the time, Chilliwack RCMP estimated that 60 goats in total had been swiped
from the community. MacDonald said the rash of thefts resulted in the Abbotsford Police creating the LEO, a position that did not previously exist, and issuing a warning to local farm operators. Anyone with information about the thefts is asked to call Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225.

Selling HST to the ‘me’ generation Tom
Fletcher
B.C. Views Even if all you care about is your own wallet, the harmonized sales tax just became an offer you shouldn’t refuse. Premier Christy Clark promised a “bold” fix for the HST, and she delivered. For months I have been arguing that the only way to overcome the wave of rejection caused by the panicked introduction of the HST is to offer a rate cut. I expected one per cent. Now if you vote to keep it, a second one-per-cent reduction will be largely financed by reversing some of the B.C. Liberals’ business tax cuts of recent years. It not only sweetens the deal for consumers, it’s great politics. First, let’s look at it from a selfish, short-term perspective, the way some readers loudly remind me they view the world. If you vote next month to go back to the provincial sales tax, the 12-per-cent
PST-GST on goods that you probably didn’t notice before will continue. If you have kids under 18 or are a senior living on less than $40,000 a year, you will be saying no to a $175-per-person bonus cheque. If you only care about yourself, you won’t care about the loss of HST credits to the poorest people in B.C. You won’t care about the province repaying Ottawa’s transition fund, or rebuilding a B.C. sales tax department to force business to convert their billing systems again. You won’t care about the competitive advantage given to Ontario, unless it costs you your job. When the B.C. government of the day has to cut services to pay for this disastrous reversal, you’ll denounce them for doing what you told them to do. You will get the government you deserve, which may include a PST extended to restaurant meals or haircuts, because the money has to come from somewhere. When Clark’s HST “fix” was unveiled, it was the NDP’s turn to panic. They have painted themselves into a corner, and now face the prospect of arguing for a return to an archaic sales tax with a
higher rate. And once again, Bill Vander Zalm and Chris Delaney tour B.C. in their Fight HST conspiracy clown car, refueled by $250,000 of public funds to campaign in the referendum. Their campaign of fear and ignorance
If you care only about yourself, you won’t care about the loss of HST credits to the poorest people in B.C. is encountering heavy resistance at university and college campuses, however, as tax experts fact-check their claims on the spot. (They’ve added “rallies” in an effort to keep fear alive.) Delaney still raves about Europe being the cause of all this alleged human misery with their insidious Value Added Tax. Vander Zalm continues to mutter about a plot to establish world govern-
ment through carbon taxes and the HST. It would be nice if the NDP-Fight HST crowd were concerned about the wave of retiring baby boomers that is starting to wash across the country. But they’re not. There are changes happening now in the B.C. economy that 1960s socialism and 1980s populism are not equipped to handle. The living standard of our children is going to be determined by how we deal with our aging, globalizing population, and this is one reason to understand a shift to consumption taxes. Fourteen months ago I wrote that more U.S. states are joining Washington, Hawaii and others with sales taxes on services as well as goods. Robert Kleine, treasurer for Michigan, explained it this way: “The basic thing is that we need to update our tax structure. We’ve got a 20th-century tax structure based on a different sort of economy. The tax base doesn’t grow as the economy grows.” Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Not many options for truckers As the wife of a trucker I know first-hand the hardship that comes with owning a rig and wondering where to park it. The City of Abbotsford doesn’t leave truckers with very many viable options on where to leave their $100,000 investments. Over the years our poor semi has had lights stolen, any and all sellable metals taken, it has been scratched, CD player and TV cleared out, and finally stolen and subsequently written off. And that was if my husband was actually able to get a spot at one of the overpopulated pits the city calls a truck stop. We joke that in the rainy season there are pot holes you could lose a Smartcar in!
Either the city should allow trucks to be parked in residential areas, and maybe put a time constraint on when the trucks are allowed to be started/driven when in a neighbourhood, or they need to clean up and increase the amount of truck stops available. The City of Chilliwack does not have the same by-law as Abbotsford, and trucks are allowed to be parked anywhere, anytime. I travel to Chilliwack frequently and have never noticed a city overrun with trucks and noise. Our fellow trucker friends that call Chilliwack home have never had issues with theft or vandalism on their rigs nor have they sent their neigh-

bours in a panic to move. And really, how much of a difference is it between all these gigantic motor homes and trailers that I see parked all over our fair city? If semi trucks shouldn’t be allowed to park in residential areas, then neither should they. I’m sure it would be a different story if all the recreational enthusiasts were fighting over the run-down parking lots and worrying about their precious RV’s safety and security every night! Everyone seems to love having their favorite and necessary products at the store when they need them, but do you every wonder how they got there? Devon Snow
All this talk about “Bike to Work Week” in Abbotsford would be funny, if it weren?t so sad. Of all the places I’ve lived or visited I would have to say that Abbotsford is the worst place to cycle – not because of the great distances, lack of bike lanes or other infrastructure, but because of Abbotsford motorists. The average Abbotsford driver is a lethal combination of incompetence, impatience and belligerence. Until moving to the Fraser Valley, I was an avid cycle commuter in Metro
Vancouver for over 15 years. I rarely owned a car during that period, and spent some time working as a bike messenger in the downtown core. In Vancouver, with its thousands of cycle commuters, the drivers have had to learn the skill of sharing the road with humanpowered vehicles. Not in the Fraser Valley. When I first moved out here, I was shocked at how badly drivers treated me. I was honked at, yelled at, deliberately forced off the road and even had objects thrown at me from passing trucks, all

because I foolishly assumed that I had a right to my little piece of the roadway. Eventually I gave up and bought a car, and my cycling was confined to recreational rides in the more rural areas. I simply decided that I enjoyed my life too much to lose it under the wheels of some soccer mom’s SUV. It doesn’t matter how much cycling infrastructure this city builds, it will remain a terrible place to cycle until the mindset of the average Abbotsford driver changes. Greg Davis

Vye Road, one of the most dangerous rail crossings in Canada, will not face a permanent closure until a viable alternative is found. During Monday’s council meeting, Eric Samuelson, a railway safety manager with the B.C. Safety Authority, spoke about the dangers of the Vye crossing, calling it “one of the unsafest in Canada.” He said there are numerous instances of conflicts and collisions between the
public and the trains on the double tracks near Sumas Way. While CP lines often move their trains through the area, Southern Railway tends to use the tracks for shuttling rail cars and building trains. While the city continues to pursue construction of a grade-separated crossing on Vye Road, Southern Railway has applied for a permanent closure from 4 to 9 p.m. from Monday to Thursday to address safety concerns. A “trial” closure began on March 15 for
the city to assess the impact on adjoining roads, particularly 4th Avenue. While traffic doubled, no significant delays were reported. However, the analysis, from the general manager of infrastructure stimulus projects with the city, noted the issue may be different in the summer when traffic increases. Council called for further consultation with land owners, local businesses and Southern Rail before implementing a permanent closure.

Fourth report of flashing incident Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Abbotsford Police have received another report of a man exposing himself to a young girl. Const. Ian MacDonald said a 14-yearold girl was walking along Haida Drive near Rotary Stadium Monday morning on her way to school when she was approached by a man who flashed her. The girl began screaming, and the
man ran off. MacDonald said police are still trying to obtain an accurate description of the culprit and determine whether he could be linked to similar previous reports. Police reported earlier this month that in two separate incidents, an Indo-Canadian man in his late 20s had exposed himself to girls walking in Rotary Stadium. The first took place on March 5 and

involved two nine-year-old girls. The second was on April 24, and the victims were aged nine and 11. The man was described as being 5’ 8 to 5’ 10 and weighing between 180 and 200 pounds. Another incident occurred on May 5, this time involving a Caucasian man described as 30 to 40 years old, about 200 pounds, with short brown receding hair and pale skin. A 75-year-old woman was walking in
the 2400 block of Countess Street when the man, who was driving a newer black sedan, asked her for the time. When she turned to respond, she noticed the man was fondling himself and was grinning at her. The man drove away when the woman told him she was going to call police. Anyone with information about any of the incidents is asked to call Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Prohibitive costs for Abby-Chwk bus Ashley WRAY Abbotsford News
An Abbotsford-Chilliwack commuter bus is currently too costly to run. According to a review by BC Transit, which was presented at Monday afternoon’s council meeting, the service would cost the city $11 per rider to operate. That’s based on a $4.51 average fare, which represents a cost recovery of about 40 per cent. BC Transit staff say 30 per cent is the minimum cost recovery, which would equate to a fare of $3.45. The report noted the $11-per-rider figure is well above the current Central Fraser Valley system’s cost per ride, which is $3.96. Between three to five dollars is considered cost-effective. The suggested route would connect the Bourquin Exchange in Abbotsford and the Downtown Exchange in Chilliwack, and would take 40 minutes one way, travelling on Highway 1. The report identified three service options varying in terms of service frequency, service hours, vehicle needs and costs. Option one would see 22 round trips per day, on a 45-minute basis between 6 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. It would require
eight buses and cost local government $371,438. Option two had 14 round trips per day, running every 45 minutes during peak hours and every 90 minutes outside of those times. It would require five buses and cost $247,140. The third option suggested seven round trips spread throughout the day. It would require three buses and cost $144,431. The report recommended further consultation with Chilliwack to discuss financial support. “If Chilliwack is not willing to come on board, it will be very difficult to cover the costs, said Coun. Moe Gill. In addition, consultation with the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) was suggested to determine service levels and potential funding assistance through the UPASS. In the past, students have lobbied for more connectivity between the Abbotsford and Chilliwack campuses. Coun. Simon Gibson added that while he is excited about the initiatives, further expansion at the local UFV campus may make the bus route unnecessary in the future. The report also suggested further analysis of ridership.

The Abbotsford board of education approved a budget of almost $160 million at its regular public meeting Monday night. Treasurer Ray Velestuk presented the board with a budget of $159,766, 671 for 2011/12. Preliminary projections in April called for total revenues of $158,975,000, compared to $159,471,000 in expenses, leaving a deficit of $496,000. The final budget called for total revenues and expenses that were each about $300,000 higher than projected, and a deficit of $512,968. Velestuk said the budget was balanced by an $8.6 million “accumulated surplus from the previous year. This occurs, for example, when schools do not use all their funding in a given year, and the money is carried forward. “The end result is
we are in a really strong financial position and that will help us moving forward in a number of initiatives, Velestuk said. Last year, the school

Bill Humphreys Retiring After almost forty years of teaching, Bill is retiring, again!
Bill Humphreys was born in Vancouver and spent most of his growing years in Maple Ridge. He has had six major loves in his life. First of all, God and his Son, Jesus Christ; second, being a Canadian; third, fishing up and down the Fraser Valley; fourth, maps which led to his first job out of high school – a cartographer for the next six years. He decided to take further education and attended seminary for two years where he met his fifth love, his wife of forty-six years, Fran, and his family which now includes three daughters, two sons-in-law, and five grandchildren. He attended UBC where he completed his Bachelor of Education degree and started the sixth love, teaching. He also spent three years at the WAC Bennett Dam producing progress reports, sent worldwide. Until his first retirement, Bill taught Grade 7 in several schools in the Coquitlam School District and thoroughly enjoyed challenging and mentoring his students, especially in the areas of good literature, Science and Social Studies. He built lasting relationships with the students, thinking of them as family. Bill served on the District Science Committee and developed several science units. He also completed his Masters of Administrative Leadership at SFU while still continuing to teach. After a two year break from teaching Bill returned, this time to Valley Christian School in Mission, BC where he taught upper level courses. At short notice he accepted the principal position, leading the school through relocation, growth, and school building phases. VCS is now a thriving school bursting at the seams. Bill has had a most rewarding career, building up a substantial repertoire of stories about students, staff and parents, which he will share with anyone willing to listen.
A celebration in his honour will take place during the Valley Christian School Awards Night on Tuesday, June 21st at 7 pm at Cedar Valley Mennonite Church, 32840 Janzen Avenue, Mission. Everyone is welcome.

“My first-ever recollection of a Canucks game is going with my dad and my brother. We’d find a little corner in the (Pacific) Coliseum and watch the whole game. It was pretty cool to follow your dad to work.” Bradley has been traveling with the Bruins for most of the playoffs, and he’s sensed the team has a special, family-like bond. But he noted the Bruins must improve on special teams if they hope to topple the favoured Canucks. Boston has struggled mightily on the power play in the post-season, converting on just 8.2 per cent of their man advantages. Bradley professed great respect for the Canucks’ depth. “The Canucks are a good hockey team, and we’ll have our hands full,” Bradley predicted. “Their depth is probably a concern of ours, because they have so many good players. “It sets up to be a pretty good match-up. I’m not going to say we’re going to beat them, but I think we’re going to give them everything they can handle.”

Reimer Gerhard “George” Wilfred
(March 26, 1914 - May 27, 2011)
George was born on March 26, 1914, the seventh child of Abram J. and Maria (Froese) Reimer in the Mennonite village of Wiesenfeld which was founded in 1880 by his great grandfather Jacob D. Reimer in what is now the Ukraine. George’s forbears willed him a rich spiritual, intellectual and material history. The mayhem of the 1917 Russian Revolution engulfed idyllic Wiesenfeld only three years after George’s birth. In 1919, at age 5, George witnessed the murder by terrorists of his grandfather Froese and Uncle Franz. Everyone fled Wiesenfeld. The A. J. Reimer family sojourned in the village of Gnadenfeld in the Molotschna, where they survived the Great Famine. In 1924 the family emigrated to Canada by train across Europe to Latvia. At Riga they embarked for England. From there they sailed across the Atlantic to Quebec City, then by train to Saskatchewan. Southeast of Humboldt they joined six other families in homesteading some rocky Saskatchewan fields during the Great Depression. George’s schooling ended after six years. Hard physical work dominated his life. George began a relationship with the Savior in his teens, was baptized and remained a devout and faithful follower of Jesus throughout his long life. He modeled and lived his faith more than he spoke of it. George began courting Anne in Saskatchewan. After both families moved to BC the two lovers were married in the Greendale MB Church on July 31, 1938. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in the same church in July 2008. George and Anne lived and raised their children Reg, Jerry, and Joan in Greendale. They were active members of Greendale MB Church from 1943 to 2005 when they moved to Menno Terrace in Abbotsford. George Reimer was an exemplary husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and inlaw, as well as a fine craftsman and farmer and a huge contributor to church and community. Honesty, generosity and faithfulness characterized George. He blessed us by staying with us a long time. In his waning days on earth he often asked his children “What is there for me to do?” His Lord will have a much better answer than we could muster! On May 16 George suffered an incident Menno Pavilion which led to pneumonia. He was admitted to the Abbotsford hospital where, after 10 difficult days, he died peacefully on May 27. George was predeceased by his wife Anne on December 30, 2008. He is survived by three children. Reg (LaDonna). Jerry (Annelisa), and Joan (Clarence) Neufeld, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service was held on Thursday, May 2, 2011 at 11:00 am from Greendale Mennonite Church, 6550 Sumas Prairie Rd. Chilliwack BC. Woodlawn Mt. Cheam Funeral Home Chilliwack, BC (604)793-4555 Condolences may be offered at: www.woodlawn-mtcheam.ca

HELP WANTED
Thomas Garson (T.G.) Stout September 7, 1925 - January 27, 2011
Tom recently passed away at home, in Princeton, B.C. Tom, born to Margaret and Peter Stout in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, was the youngest of six children (two brothers and three sisters). He was the devoted husband of Mathea Elizabeth Gloria Stout (deceased 2007) for 60 years. He is survived by 5 children, 9 grandchildren (predeceased by his granddaughter Claire Elizabeth Dixon), and 4 great-grandchildren. Tom’s parents immigrated from the Orkneys, Scotland to homestead in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. There they used Clydesdales to work the land. One boyhood memory for Tom was seeing his dad’s horses in the RCMP Musical Ride. From Saskatchewan the Stouts moved to Manitoba and then out west to Vancouver. There, Tom’s dad made a living producing charcoal for the Japanese boats. Tom remembered working with his dad cutting wood, stacking the wood in furnaces and tending the red hot fires to produce charcoal. The family moved to Abbotsford when Tom was in grade 9. It was there he met Gloria, his future wife. The defining relationships in Tom’s life were with his wife and with his father and mother in laws- Matt and Susan Anderson. He entered the business world with Matt and Susan as a partner in their contracting firm. The company, often with Tom at the controls of the equipment, went on to build many roads, etc. throughout southern B.C. Dad and Matt Anderson obtained the contract to build the Matsqui Dike in the aftermath of the flood of 1948. When we drive past Chilliwack it is always heartening to see that the dike is still there (along with the memories of the stories he told of the people, well loved friends and characters that worked and lived in Matsqui and Abbotsford over the years). When Matt and Susan developed Skye Blue Lodge at Allison Lake B.C., Tom and Gloria went with them as partners. After a few years with Tom contracting all day and farming, ranching and operating a dude ranch in his off hours, Tom and Gloria decided they needed more time for their growing family. Tom took a contract to strip coal at Blakeburn, Coalmont. From there he moved his young family to Princeton and started Tri Valley Construction. Along the way he gained two valuable partners, Les Mackenzie and Willie Wilkinson, and together they built a company involved in opening the surrounding Princeton area to development, logging and mining. We feel great pride when we hike in the area or drive on many roads built by our dad. Tom purchased and operated for a time the Bridge Auto Court (the Princeton Information Centre is on the site today) and the Texaco Bulk
Plant. He was one of the original partners at Snow Patch and helped build the Olympic ski jump at Amber Ski Hill. In his spare time he had obtained a pilot’s license. Those years were busy years for his family. Our parents believed in giving back to the community and Tom and Gloria supported each other in their passion. Tom was a member of the Kinsmen. He frequently talked about the great times they had at Swede Hall and the outings where they were doing community work. He also served with the Gizeh temple (Shriners). Over the years he served as a town alderman, school trustee, and volunteered in countless ways for the museum, town, service clubs, curling rink and neighbors. We remember our dad as a person who when we were young would drive around with his snowplow on the ubiquitous jeep, with a cigar clenched between his teeth. He would “stop” at a few houses on the way home to plow driveways for elderly people who couldn’t get out or for neighbors whom he thought needed a hand. Tom took great interest in the people and stories of the Princeton, Coalmont, and surrounding areas. With his close friend, Walt Smart, as well as with countless other friends he used to share stories of the characters they had met over the years with the richness of memory and of detail that kept all who heard them spellbound. Those stories told a fascinating history of the area and of the richness of the people who lived and worked there. While work, family, and community were the center of his life he also found time to become a proficient model builder and an expert at repairing antique clocks despite having lost use of his thumb, index finger and half of his middle finger due to an incident of carving wooden blasting caps with a friend at the age of 12. Even with his lost fingers Tom was a top marksman. His incredible eyesight earned him the title from his friend, Walt, of ‘eagle eyes’. He was phenomenally strong and hard working. Tom and Gloria had moved from Princeton to Oliver for a few years in their retirement. There they continued their tradition of community involvement. However, they missed Princeton and returned to stay. In his final years, Tom stayed close to home and took care of his beloved wife Gloria, going every day to see her at Ridgewood Lodge. A celebration of life will be held later in the late summer, so his family and friends can honour a talented and awesome friend, husband, father, and citizen. We, his children, will miss him terribly but will try our best to live our lives with as much compassion, love, hard work and dedication as our dad did.
