Jonathan Bacon dead after shooting in Kelowna Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

The eldest of the three notorious Bacon brothers of Abbotsford died in a mass shooting at a Kelowna hotel Sunday afternoon. RCMP confirmed yesterday at a press conference that Jonathan Bacon, 30, was killed in the targeted gangland hit that injured four others – two men and two women – at the Delta Grand Hotel. The shooting occurred at about 2:45 p.m. at the front entrance to the hotel. Police said that as a white Porsche Cayenne was leaving the hotel, an unconfirmed number of people in another vehicle – a silvery green SUV – followed the Porsche and opened fire. Witnesses have described seeing a masked man with an assault rifle. A witness who was walking outside the hotel at about 3 p.m. Sunday said that at least 50 people ran out of the building screaming, “There’s shooting! Run, run run!” as the sound of gunfire pierced the air. The Porsche came to a stop in the garden area adjacent to the hotel’s convention centre entrance. One of the vehicle’s male occupants fled the scene and had not been located by press deadline. Police said it is believed there was more than one shooter, and the suspect vehicle left the scene in an unknown direction. They could not confirm whether a burned-out vehicle found later was the get-away car. Supt. Pat Fogarty of the Combined Forces Continued on A5

Lord Stanley’s trophy brought to Abbotsford Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News

Robert Hillier might still be considered a new dad, but he’s already got a pretty good eye for a cute baby photo. That’s how threemonth-old Chloe Hillier found herself seated inside the bowl of the Stanley Cup on Monday afternoon in the pediatrics ward at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. The significance of spending quality time with the most famous trophy in North American team sports seemed lost on the youngster, but it brought a broad smile to her dad’s face. “To have the Stanley Cup right in front of you is amazing,” Robert marveled. “I just thought, ‘How cute of a picture would it be to have her up there?’” The Stanley Cup’s stop at the hospital was part of a whirlwind tour of Abbotsford, courtesy of Boston Bruins director of

Hells Angels link Biker gang member with Bacon as bullets slammed into SUV In 2005, Jonathan was among three people charged with drug and weapons offences after his home in the 2000 block of Winfield Drive was busted. Also charged were his girlfriend Rayleene Burton and his associate Godwin Cheng. Police seized marijuana, crack cocaine, ecstasy, two machine pistols, two handguns, silencers, a bulletproof vest and almost $100,000 in cash. The case was dismissed by a provincial court judge, but that decision was overturned by the B.C. Court of Appeal, and the appeal ruling was upheld by the Supreme Court of Canada. Their new trial had been scheduled to begin June 14, 2012. The targeted hit in Kelowna was not Jonathan’s first. In September 2006, he was shot several times in the driveway of the Strathcona Court home. Ongoing concerns about public safety prompted police to issue a warning in 2008 that anyone associated with the Bacons was putting their life at risk. Video surveillance cameras were installed in the Strathcona Court neighbourhood. Jonathan was also in trouble with the law in 2009, when he was charged with fraud and possession of property obtained by fraudulent means. His co-accused was Dennis Karbovanec, currently serving a life sentence after pleading guilty to three counts of second-degree murder and one count of conspiracy to commit murder in the Surrey Six killings, in which two innocent people were slain, including Ed Schellenberg of Abbotsford. The two were accused of leasing a 2004 Mercedes SL55 from a Coquitlam car company using false documents. That vehicle is the one Jamie Bacon was driving when he was shot at, in a busy Abbotsford intersection in January 2009. Charges in the fraud case were stayed against Jonathan and Karbovanec. Three years ago, a bloody war erupted on Lower Mainland streets, as the Scorpions and rival gang United Nations battled for control of the drug trade, and carried out retribution for attacks on each other’s members.

Special Enforcement Unit said the three men in the Porsche Cayenne were well known to police. Fogarty confirmed that one of the other victims was a member of the Hells Angels. Police can’t say whether Bacon was the intended target. Fogarty said although the public and media often want to categorize criminals into their gang affiliations, it’s not always that simple. Gangsters in B.C. are more fluid and their loyalties less certain than they might be elsewhere. That’s why Bacon – known as a high-profile Red Scorpion – would have been associating with a Hells Angel, Fogarty said. “When you’re sitting in a car with someone, you’re more friend than foe.” Fogarty said organized crime has become more prevalent in smaller B.C. communities as gangsters move into areas where there is less competition, a better price for their product and less police presence. NewsBytes OFFICER ASSAULTED An Abbotsford police officer suffered minor injuries Saturday night after a man fled a CounterAttack roadblock at Blueridge Drive and Thornhill Place. The man pulled up to the roadblock in a minivan at about 11:15 p.m. Sgt. Casey Vinet said the driver provided a false name, and an officer then indicated the man was under arrest. Instead of getting out of the vehicle, the driver attempted to put his vehicle into gear, while the officer tried to stop him, suffering minor injuries to his face and arm. The driver was able to get away, but was arrested later at his residence. The 25-year-old, who did not have a driver’s licence and was in violation of a court-ordered curfew, is currently accused of assaulting a police officer in Langley. Vinet said police will now recommend similar charges in Abbotsford. He said 10 officers have been assaulted this year in the city. All the incidents were minor and involved actions such as kicking, punching and pushing.

SEARCH FOR BORDER JUMPERS Abbotsford Police were called by U.S. border patrol to help search for three border jumpers on Saturday at about 7 p.m. The men from Mexico illegally entered Canada at 0 Avenue through some berry fields in Abbotsford. Police were unable to find them. A fourth man was arrested on the U.S. side. Sgt. Casey Vinet said border jumping typically increases during the summer months. Anyone with information on the three men is asked to call Abbotsford Police at 604-8595225.

fact:

Only one day after the 49th annual Abbotsford International Airshow came to a close, president Ron Price is preparing for next year. “It’s going to be a big one, our 50th,” he said Monday morning. While already thinking ahead for the next show, Price took a few moments to reflect on the weekend event. He said this year’s show had an outstanding flying program with fan favourites, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, the SkyHawks and the CF-18 Hornet performances stealing the show. Price pointed out the most important thing was all the attendees, and the pilots, went home safe.

DOWNES ROAD CONSTRUCTION UPDATE BC Hydro continues to construct a new, underground duct bank along Downes Road. This work is resulting in temporary traffic delays, so motorists are encouraged to detour north to Townshipline Road to avoid the construction zone. Crews are on site from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday to Saturday. The majority of this work will result in single-lane, alternating traffic. However, the installation of three culverts will require a three-day, full road closure to non-residents and non-emergency vehicles. This road closure will occur August 15–17, 2011 between Ross Road and Bradner Road. BC Hydro recognizes the inconvenience this construction may cause and we thank you for your patience and understanding.

Our hand in the weather It seems summer has arrived. Too bad it took until almost the middle of August to get here. Not that we’re the only place enduring weird weather. When we were lamenting the cool temperatures and cloudy skies of July, the rest of the continent was sweltering in record heat and withering humidity. Those kinds of conditions have become so commonplace, some cities, like Toronto, have instituted a system of extreme heat alerts that include a protocol to extend the hours of public pools, handing out water in parks, and visits by health officials to rooming houses and other residential premises to ensure residents aren’t suffering. Meanwhile, much of Europe has been soggy and cooler than normal, after a hot, dry spring. In Africa, Somalia is suffering its worst drought in 60 years. The entire Horn of Africa, which also comprises Ethiopia and Kenya, has received two to eight inches less rainfall this year than normal.

That’s sparked a famine that has claimed the lives of more than 29,000 children under the age of five over the past three months. Climatologists like to remind us that such extremes aren’t as wild and unusual as they seem. The La Nina and El Nino phenomena, in which the surface temperature of the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean is warmer or cooler than normal, have been influencing the climate for more than 20,000 years. Scientists say that it’s impossible to blame specific weather events like storms, droughts, heat waves and extreme cold on global warming caused by humans. But climate change, settlement of expanding populations into areas prone to extreme weather and our inaction to deal with that likelihood have a way of turning bad weather into a disaster. So as much as we like to curse Mother Nature when the weather’s foul, we must also shoulder some of the blame. – Black Press

Being proud of what we are and can be Mark

Rushton On the

Other Hand The roar and thunder of jets, the growl of piston-driven aircraft that have shattered the skies over Abbotsford this past weekend are thrilling to many, an annoyance to some, but as the BC Aerospace Showcase held Friday at the airport demonstrated, what we really were hearing was the sound of a remarkably powerful economic engine. Abbotsford, British Columbia and the rest of Western Canada are part of, and poised to become, a dynamic industry that can help drive our economy in the future. The Aerospace Showcase, hosted in part by the City of Abbotsford, took place Friday morning at YXX’s star tenant, Cascade Aerospace. Inside that massive facility, undergoing maintenance, were aircraft demonstrating the diversity of work that is being done here. There was a plane owned by First Air,

a Canadian historic airline serving our country’s northern reaches, a WestJet 737, a Lynden air transport that has replaced the trucks that carry goods from the southern 48 to Alaska and a couple of Canadian military C-130s. All in one building, and all being serviced by British Columbians. And that example, as the showcase ably demonstrated, is just one part of a large aerospace industry that our province, and particularly Abbotsford Airport, with our proximity to the United States and the Asia-Pacific region, will with innovation and investment continue to grow. The Americans like to tell you that the sound of military jets is the sound of freedom. In B.C., the sound of any jet is the sound of money going – one way or the other – into our pockets. From small outfits to big ones like MacDonald Dettwiler in Richmond and Cascade, from an engineer based in Vancouver who works for a U.S. military contractor, to developers of high-tech wizardry, the dollars roll into our economy and drive an economic bus that so few notice other than when a passenger jet flies over, or the weekend roar of Abbotsford Air

Show makes its yearly presence known. As someone who has always held a great fondness for flight, it is fascinating to see the gadgetry – pilotless drone aircraft, and fully computerized instrument panels even on small floatplanes. Yet with all this fancy stuff of now

In B.C., the sound of any jet is the sound of money going – one way or the other – into our pockets. and the future, it appears there are fewer people seeking their commercial pilot licence today than in the past few years. Seems that competition for flying jobs is so great, airlines and others requiring pilots can be tight with salaries. Thus, return on the huge investment in commercial flying lessons creates a deterrent that fewer are willing to risk. However, like any other industry, there

are peaks and valleys, and I’d not be surprised that within a few years, the demand for pilots will exceed the supply, wages will go up and students will flock back to the classroom and the cockpits. For me, however, the Abbotsford Air Show and the occasional flight in the rear seat of restored Piper Super Cruiser, is about as far into flying as my future will take me. But the air show still kindles excitement, and often provides the dream that leads youngsters into aviation. It is also a showcase of pride, not only for what we can achieve on an economic front, but in the skill of our military, in our national achievements, and in our nation as a whole. I saw that pride demonstrated not only at the airport this past Friday but, after leaving the site, there spread over the roof of a modest home in Clearbrook was a massive Canadian flag, visible I’m certain to all those visiting pilots who entertained in the skies over Abbotsford this weekend. That family’s act made me as proud of our people and our country as anything I saw on the airfield. markrushton@abbynews.com

Look for the Sleep Country yer

We live in a great community Yesterday, I picked up books at the library. Back in my car, I was driving very slowly – at the next corner my brakes did not work. I slewed my car around the corner. By now, shaking with fear, I turned into the fire and rescue parking lot. I saw myself crashing into this wall or into that car, but for some odd reason I put my moving car into park

and in the middle of the parking lot it actually stopped. Shaking, I got out of the car, but I had to hold onto the door just to stay upright. A man came to see what had brought me there. Patiently, he listened, and three more firemen came out. One rolled out a chair for me, another man draped a coat over me, yet another man tried my car and parked it.

Overwhelmed by their kindness, I simmered down a bit. Their calm way to think on my behalf helped me so very much. A tow truck was ordered and it came quite soon. I am so very grateful to these good men who live in Abbotsford. I really would like your readers to know what a great community we live in. Christina Radnai

Cannons over complaints

I am a blueberry farmer and have been using the cannons for 10 years now. Our cannons start at 6 a.m., then are turned off from noon to 2 p.m. Then they are blasting until 7 p.m. These are very reasonable hours. They do scare away all the crows and starlings and are a tremendous help. Yes, it is hard for the neighbours but it is only four weeks out of the year. Abbotsford produces 12.5 million pounds of blueberries, so

a few complaining neighbours will not change anything. The government officials

understand that this is a huge money industry and will not side with complaining

neighbours. Isn’t that always the bottom line? D. Sohi

Golden at the Games Abbotsford athletes make huge medal haul in Kamloops Nicolas Garfias of Abbotsford went on a gold rush at the Western Canada Summer Games in Kamloops last week, winning five individual titles in men’s gymnastics. Garfias, B.C.’s outstanding high performance gymnast in 2010, was the allaround champ, and finished first on the parallel bars, high bar, pommel horse and floor. He and fellow Abbotsford gymnast Andrew Schmidt also helped B.C. to gold in the team competition. Garfias’s podium blitz highlighted a tremendous collective effort by Abbotsford athletes at the Games – all 18 locals in attendance brought home at least one medal. On the wrestling mat, all five local grapplers made it to the final in their respective weight classes. Joban Phulka

gold, while Navdeep Dhillon (42 kg) and Amanveer Kaler (58

In track and field, Tiffany Perkins won the women’s javelin by a huge margin – her best throw of 49.95 metres was more than seven metres better than her closest competitor. Aisha Klippenstein won the triple jump (11.53m), and was seventh in the 100m hurdles. A trio of Abbotsford athletes – Spencer Miller, Graham Hawkins and Spencer Loughlin – led B.C. on a dominant run in the under-16 rugby sevens tournament. B.C. allowed just 12 points over five games, capped by a 41-5 win over Saskatchewan in the final. Miller came up huge in the gold medal game, scoring four tries. STOKES, Kathleen Frances

June 15, 1943 - August 12, 2011 (26 years old) Kathleen Frances Stokes (nee Robinson) passed away suddenly on August 12, 2011. Kathleen was a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, farmer, business woman, and occasional rabble-rouser; however throughout her life her spirit was replenished by working in her garden. She derived joy from the beauty she had nurtured with the help of her husband, and was eager to share their collaboration with the community. While her garden was her crowning achievement, she was also known as a painter, musician, interior decorator, and prize-winning gingerbread architect extraordinaire. Kathleen was a fierce and tenacious advocate on behalf of those she loved. Her honesty, integrity, and tremendous compassion guided her, and she would not easily tolerate injustice. She was a role model, practicing more than preaching. Kathleen is survived by her loving husband Bryan, her children Warren (Sandy), Kara, and Laureen (Bert); her grand-children Ethan, Riley, and Peter James (PJ), her mother Daisy, siblings Donna, Ken, and Murray, along with many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved father, father-in-law, motherin-law, and sister-in-law. She will be remembered by many. Kathleen’s family invites you to join them on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at 1:00 PM at Carman United Church (7258 Vedder Road, Sardis, BC) for a memorial service. An open house to appreciate the splendour and peace of her garden will follow at 42345 South Sumas Road from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM. Cameras welcome.
