En route from an air show in Medicine Hat, Alberta to the B.C. Aviation Museum in Victoria, the Hawk One fighter jet paid a visit to the Abbotsford International Airport last Tuesday afternoon. The jet’s gold frame came into view, cut down the side with a red and white streak that progresses into a hawk’s head. The plane’s open nose, which draws air for its jet engine, is a trademark. The aircraft costs $5,000 an hour to run due to fuel and maintenance. The historical F-86 Sabre 5 fighter jet is the only one flying in Canada, and will be making an appearance at the Abbotsford Airshow, which runs from Aug. 12-14 at Abbotsford International Airport, 1464 Tower Street. Piloted by retired Canadian Armed Forces Lt. Colonel Dan Dempsey, the aircraft will be performing low level acrobatics at the show, potentially alongside the Snowbirds and an F-18 demo. Dempsey has been flying in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) for 23 years. He grew up admiring planes as his dad also flew

in the RCAF. Ultimately, it was the influence of the Golden Hawks, which flew F-86 aircrafts from 1959 to 1964, that inspired Dempsey to join. “They were the first to give recognition to Canadian aerobatics,” said Dempsey. “When they stopped, it sent reverberations through the RCAF.” When the opportunity arose in 2009 to fly the Hawk One, Dempsey emerged from retirement. Painted in the same colour scheme as the Golden Hawks, Dempsey discovered his particular plane was once used as a Golden Hawks training jet, making the experience even more special. Since returning from retirement, he’s been touring across Canada, performing at air shows, talking to veterans about their stories and working to encourage youth. “We’re speaking with kids and hopefully inspiring them to do something unique and special with their lives,” he said. “We try to plant a seed of motivation with them.” The Hawk One continues to travel by sponsorContinued on A7

‘Not in this airshed’ MLAs agree air quality is key Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News

Abbotsford’s MLAs are united on at least one major issue, none of them believe incineration should be allowed to damage the Fraser Valley’s sensitive air shed. However, their views on a proposed plan by Metro Vancouver to burn garbage, begins to differ after that. Last week, Environment Minister Terry Lake endorsed Metro’s waste plan, which includes burning garbage which cannot be recycled or composted, and turning it into energy, used to supplement the use of fossil fuels. Opponents of the plan fear the burning process will release pollutants into the air, which will drift up the Valley. They argue the science presented by Metro does not take into account all the possible toxins that could be created. Abbotsford-West MLA and Minister of Health Michael de Jong said he knows that everyone in Abbotsford, from residents to councillors and MLAs, are motivated by one thing, “the protection of the quality of our air shed.” He believes Lake’s endorsement does not end the debate on where an incinerator will be constructed. “What the decision does is set up a process,” he said. “A process that allows Metro to attempt to advance its plan ... That’s all it does,” said de Jong. He said he is hesitant on the idea of incineration in the Lower Mainland, but it depends on what the emissions are. “If it is as close to zero as possible, then my hesitancy is reduced.” He added, like the Sumas Energy 2 fight – a

A trash incineration facility already exists in Burnaby. proposed natural gas power plant which was defeated by a huge outcry from Valley citizens – the arguments must be based on science. “It’s important that we approach this responsibly ... Garbage is important and it needs to be dealt with. I’m not comfortable throwing our garbage in a landfill for the next 100 years either,” said de Jong. Abbotsford-Mission MLA Randy Hawes agrees with some of de Jong’s statements. “I am not a fan of collecting up all our garbage and dumping it into a hole ... ” He also doesn’t see the environment minister’s ruling as a definitive answer. “I’m not so sure there is a decision,” said Hawes.

He said the conditions and need for consultation contained in the minister’s report indicates the Lower Mainland may not be a suitable home for a waste-to-energy plant. “There is a place for incineration, but not in this air shed ... I think he (Lake) is saying there is a place for it, just not here.” Hawes suggested the Gold River (Vancouver Island) option may be the best solution, although he does not know if the air currents would bring any pollutants, no matter how small, into the air shed. Last week, Abbotsford-South MLA John van Dongen said he was against incineration in this region. Chilliwack’s MLA John Les lambasted the B.C. environment minister’s decision and warned that the people of the Fraser Valley won’t stand for it. “I think the minister’s approval is regrettable and wrong,” Les said. “Obviously, people in the Fraser Valley will be fully engaged every step of the way,” he said. “The people of the Fraser Valley will be their (Metro Vancouver’s) worst nightmare come true.” Les called the conditions requiring a consultation process “cold comfort” given Metro Vancouver’s past record of consultation with FVRD officials. “I don’t put a lot of faith in the consultation (by) Metro Vancouver,” he said. “To them, consultation is holding a meeting, and then doing what they want anyway.” Chilliwack-Hope MLA Barry Penner, a former environment minister and currently Attorney-General, was less critical of his fellow cabinet minister’s decision. “I’ve spoken to (Terry) Lake many times and I’ve always repeated the message that I don’t want to see our air quality negatively impacted in the Fraser Valley,” Penner said. “At the same time, it’s important to stress (the approval) doesn’t mean an actual project to incinerate garbage has been approved,” he said. Terry Lake was unavailable for comment.

Apology issued for comments Metro chair acknowledges ‘very poor analogy’ in regard to Ross Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News

Lois Jackson has issued a verbal and written apology for comments she made about Fraser Valley Regional District chair Patricia Ross. Jackson, chair of Metro Vancouver and Mayor of Delta, was speaking on a Vancouver radio show last week. While discussing Metro Vancouver’s waste management plan, which includes a proposal to incinerate garbage, the radio host quoted Ross as saying there are “absolutely no conditions under which incineration of garbage will be acceptable to us.”

Jackson countered that argument with the following statement. “Well, you know, we can take an absolute stand on anything. And we have seen what happened when a gentleman took an absolute stand in another part of the world. I don’t believe in moving ahead in that manner. You cannot take absolutes in today’s world.” While she did not make a direct comparison, Jackson’s comment could be interpreted as comparing Ross to Anders Behring Breivik, the man involved in last week’s bombing and shooting spree that killed 77 people in Oslo, Norway. Shortly after the interview Jackson contacted Ross.

“She phoned me a couple of times after the interview and did apologize,” said Ross. “As far as I’m concerned, that’s the end of the matter.” Jackson also issued a written apology to Ross and to the media. In her release Jackson wrote “In responding to a question during the interview, I was looking for examples of how absolute positions do not foster constructive dialogue and ultimately limit outcomes. In my effort to do so, my choice of wording resulted in a very poor analogy.” She went on to write, “I would like to express my unqualified apology for this most unfortunate mistake.”

NewsBytes NEW PRESIDENT FOR HEAT The Abbotsford Heat were slated to hold a press conference on Tuesday morning, where it was expected they would announce Ryan Walter as their new team president. Walter, a 53-yearold New Westminster native, played 15 NHL seasons with the Washington Capitals, Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver Canucks, winning a Stanley Cup in 1986 with Montreal. He served as a Canucks assistant coach under Alain Vigneault for two seasons (2008 to 2010), and coached the Canadian women’s hockey team to a gold medal at the 2010 Four Nations Cup. Walter holds a masters degree in leadership from Trinity Western University, and is an author and motivational speaker. His son Ben, a 27-year-old centre, signed with the Calgary Flames, the Heat’s NHL parent club, last month.

STANLEY CUP HERE Hockey’s holy grail is coming to Abbotsford in two weeks’ time. Scott Bradley, a longtime Abbotsford resident who serves as the Boston Bruins’ director of player personnel, is bringing the Stanley Cup to his hometown on Monday, Aug. 15. The Bruins defeated the Vancouver Canucks in a thrilling seven-game final series, and Bradley is believed to be the first person from Abbotsford to have his name inscribed on the Cup. Bradley, a two-time cancer survivor, will bring the Cup to the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre on the morning of Aug. 15. In the afternoon, between 2:30 and 6:30 p.m., the trophy will be made available to the public at The Baron Bar and Grill (1266 Tower St.). For a minimum donation of $10 to Miracle Flights for Kids Canada – a charity which supplies low-income sick children with flights for medical treatment in distant locations – people can have their picture taken with the Cup.

Locked up for a cause Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News

Abbotsford SPCA branch manager Jodi Dunlop is going to put herself through what the kennelled dogs at the facility experience, right down to wearing a collar. Dunlop will be locked up, reliant on people to give her food and water, depending on them to take her out for fresh air and exercise, and with just a sleeping bag for comfort. “I want to experience what the dogs experience, and I’m sure it’ll be an eye-opener, said Dunlop. She will spend 30 hours in an

SPCA kennel, hoping to raise $5,000 toward the Paws for a Cause fundraiser. The lockup will begin at noon on Aug. 20. “It’ll be fun until five, when everyone (staff) leaves, she predicts. “I know I won’t get much sleep. They bark at night. She will have company. Her cellmate will be Stewie, a sixmonth-old Chihuahua pup that the SPCA rescued. She bottle fed him for two and a half weeks, and “we kind of got attached, she said. She named him for the popular Family Guy cartoon character, and decided to adopt him.

Supporters will be able to buy her a cookie, or Stewie a dog biscuit, or take them for a walk, for a minimum $5 donation. Dunlop will not be able to sneak out under cover of darkness and go home. There will be a webcam in her kennel. Paws for a Cause is a provincewide SPCA fundraiser scheduled for Sept. 11. It is the major fundraiser for the SPCA, and the target for the Abbotsford/ Hope region is $15,000. For more information on Paws for a Cause, or to donate online, see www.spca.bc.ca. ABBOTSFORD NEWS I Tuesday, August 2, 2011

Sorting out the HST mess The deadline to mail in your HST ballot quickly approaches. August 5 is the last day Elections BC will receive envelopes which means if you want to take part in this important decision, today is the day to mark your X. There is only word to truly describe the HST mess: unfortunate. It’s unfortunate the Liberals so badly bungled rolling it out. It’s unfortunate the NDP has spearheaded a tax revolt without real alternatives. It’s unfortunate the political landscape of this province has been dominated by this discussion while much more pressing issues get neglected. Despite the political upheaval over this little acronym, it would be even more unfortunate if the province is forced back to the old tax system with a yes vote. The Liberals are guilty of misleading voters on the HST. The manner in which the Liberals got us to this point will not be forgotten come general election time. If that’s the time voters decide to make a change, so be it. Just as alarming as the Liberals’ path to

this referendum is the NDP strategy. The electoral gamesmanship on display over the last year has been all-time. The party has taken every opportunity to trace back almost all issues to the low-hanging fruit of tax revolt, all the while providing very little in the way of solutions. Firing up the masses over increased taxation is easy, sound policy is hard. The best weather vane of this referendum may be the Green Party of BC – a party looking to be more pragmatic than political. Last month party delegates debated the HST at their AGM. A distinct majority, including party leader Jane Sterk and prominent local Greens, voted in favour of keeping the HST. One main reason is that the HST is a true consumption tax. Those who make more money will spend more money and in turn pay more tax. If that yellow envelope still sits unopened, now is your chance to weigh in. Yes or no, your time will not be wasted and you can take comfort knowing you had your say. – Black Press

My View When it comes to commuting, I tend to be a creature of habit. After driving from the Valley to work in Surrey every day for many years, I have driven every possible way home, hoping, like many, to find that perfect balance between low stress, minimum traffic congestion and the quickest trip. Living in Mission and having a oneway travel time of close to one hour, I tend to drive to work through as much peaceful countryside as I can, winding my way through Matsqui, Langley and eventually the pastoral countryside of Cloverdale. Nearly every day I drive home along Highway 10. Over the last year, I have noticed RCMP members parked on the south side of Highway 10 just east of 168 Street. Each day I pass by, there seems to be

at least one angry motorist pulled over to the side of the road passing their driver’s licence and insurance papers through the window to an awaiting officer. While observing each corner of that intersection, I have often wondered what it is that warrants such a continuous police presence for such an extended length of time. Maybe it’s drivers stopping on the railroad tracks on the south side of the intersection? Possibly speeders, in a hurry to get home, running the red light? It only seems to be an issue eastbound as I have never seen the same police presence on the north side of the street. I was becoming more and more curious. So last week on my way home, I decided to find out. My idea was to publish a photograph and some information letting people know how to avoid committing a traffic violation at an obvious hot spot – a public service kind of thing. After all, if the police are having to hand out tickets in this one place almost every

day for over a year, motorists clearly aren’t getting the message. I was on a mission. Having just passed the officers, I made a left-hand turn onto 172 Street and got back onto Highway 10 and headed west.

Almost instantly, an officer wearing a bright green reflective vest jumped out from behind one of the parked SUVs and directed me to the curb. When I reached 168 Street I made a right, driving north where I took a truck turnaround just north on 168 and eventually found myself southbound at the intersection of 168 and Highway 10. Finally the light turned green and

I moved into the intersection. All my questions would soon be answered. Fortunately, no one was driving north so I slowly made the left turn westbound towards the police, right into the net. Almost instantly an officer wearing a bright green reflective vest jumped out from behind one of the parked SUVs and directed me to the curb. “Do you realize you just made an illegal left hand turn?” he asked. Dumbfounded, and having missed any signage, I tried to explain that it was actually me who wanted to talk to him, to get to the bottom of this longstanding mystery. He clearly wasn’t buying my story. After a few minutes he was back at my window with a ticket for $121. Apparently there is a sign on the traffic light – a small one – prohibiting left turns during the morning and afternoon rush hours. All this time I had wondered. Now my wallet knows the answer. Step inside the all new redesigned Grand Caravan Dodge believes that just because a driver needs the versatility of a minivan doesn’t mean that the experience has to be boring. So engineers redesigned and retuned virtually every system in the new Grand Caravan’s suspension. That major suspension overhaul, combined with a new V-6 engine that delivers best-inclass horsepower, gives Grand Caravan drivers a dynamic driving experience that other minivans in the segment just don’t deliver. Get behind the wheel, and enjoy a driving experience once never thought possible in such a functional vehicle. At the heart of the 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan is an all-new powertrain. The new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine is mated to a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission. This potent combination replaces all three of the previous minivan engines. Gone are the 3.3-liter, 3.8-liter and 4.0-liter V-6 engines, all replaced with one high-tech, high-performing and highly responsive motor that hits the sweet spot between power and efficiency. With the Pentastar engine, the new Grand Caravan delivers best-in-class horsepower (283 hp compared with 197 hp in the previous 3.8-liter V-6 engine) and more torque (260 lb.-ft. versus 230 lb.-ft.) without sacrificing fuel economy. It features a new driverselectable Fuel Economizer Mode. With the flip of a switch, drivers can change the transmission shift schedule to maximize their fuel efficiency. In addition, a 12 millimeter lower ride height, new premium, lowerrolling resistance tires, a new spoiler and reduced brake caliper and rear bearing drag all contribute to Dodge Grand Caravan’s excellent fuel economy.

Dodge puts the sexy in ‘Man Van’ Dodge hopes it has an answer for when a dad finally has to park his muscle car to cart around the kids -- the “Man Van.” The resurgent U.S. automaker unveiled the new Dodge Grand Caravan S/T with a mono-color grill, matte pillars and a black “man cave” interior for the family man who’s still looking for a vehicle that’s fun to drive. This van is not for the typical soccer mom. Although it has the same 283-hp engine, the suspension is tuned 20 percent to 40 percent stiffer for a much sportier ride. “It’s got to be a lot of fun to drive,” Ralph Gilles, president and CEO of Dodge Brand.

Eighteen Abbotsford teens were awarded $500 each through the Abbotsford Community Foundation to assist in their post-secondary pursuits. “We want students to expect great things by pursuing a post-secondary education, and created the Scholarship and Bursary program to improve access for students in our local community,” said past president, Lenora McQueen. The club awards $9,000 each year and selects students who have shown a high level of scholastic achievement, ability, and commitment to the community. The 2011 recipients are: Abbotsford Collegiate: Kristie Deutsch, Wesley Fritzke; ASIA: Tanya Schuetz, Shayna Dyck; Abbotsford Traditional: Amtoj Grewal, Nicole Clarke; Bakerview Centre for Learning: Darren Bangsund, Leticia Brooke; Mennonite Educational Institute: Tori Kornelsen, Stephan Smith; Robert Bateman: Shaun Riley, Kerri Black; Rick Hansen: Eric Olson, Victoria WarneLang; WJ Mouat: Hilary Smith, Premdeep Singh and Yale: Mikayla Roberts, Caleb Reardon. Getting a close shave for cancer Jordan Bjornsson started up a Shave Your Head Day for Cancer at Colleen and Gordie Howe Middle School in memory of Ziddi Chatchot. Jordan set up a fundraiser at the school and ended off the campaign by shaving teachers and students heads.

A total of $1,126 was raised to go to the BC Cancer Foundation. Special thanks go out to Gergana from Malkins Barber Shop and Julie Bjornsson for volunteering their time and shaving heads and also to everyone that donated to this worthy cause.

Schools serious about recycling Thousands of students throughout B.C. have worked hard this year – and not just with homework. More than 300 schools, including several from Abbotsford, participated in Encorp’s BC School Recycling Program for the 2010 - 2011 school year and ensured that four million beverage containers were recycled into something new.

Encorp’s BC School Recycling Program provides schools with the resources and tools to make recycling easy, convenient and profitable. Participating schools receive a deposit refund for each container collected and it is free for schools to participate. Schools that collect the most containers per student are eligible for cash prizes. The top prize is $750.

“Don’t drown me out!” Lawns only need one inch of water per week. Use a watering gauge to make sure you water efficiently.

Local winners included: Q Robert Bateman Secondary which won $750 for collecting 69,747 cans and bottles. Q Yale Secondary also won $750 for collecting 224,704 cans and bottles. Since the program’s inception in 2000, about 37 million con-

tainers have been recycled, and Encorp has refunded more than $2.2 million in deposit refunds to participating BC schools. “Beverage container recycling is a great way for schools to raise money for programs and activities such as field trips and luncheons and for items like computer & sports equipment. The possibilities are endless,” said Sandy Sigmund of Encorp.

Abbotsford students earned 18 regional medals and seven provincial medals, including three gold medalists who qualified to compete in the National Skills competition in Quebec City. The three gold medalists were: Abbotsford Collegiate’s Bentley Klassen (Carpentry), Aaron Spitters (Architectural CAD), and Andrew Graham (Electrical Wiring). At the nationals, Klassen earned a bronze medal. Other provincial medal winners were: Charlene Wight with a bronze in Hair styling; Russell Foster earned silver in Electrical Wiring, and Abbotsford Middle students Sun Yoon and Wyatt Haines earning gold in the Jr. Provincial Spaghetti Bridge Building Contest.

letters Europeans further ahead in waste technology I am currently a visitor to your fair city and will be leaving it shortly. However I did have the opportunity to read the article in The News by Kevin Mills and Robert Freeman titled “Trash fight not over.” I am very dismayed about what you had to say, Ms. Ross. Apparently you have your head stuck in the sand like an ostrich

and know absolutely nothing about Energy From Waste (EFW). If we keep producing trash at the rate we do, just what do we do with it? Using landfill sites is just a polite way of saying we are poisoning our land and our ground water. It cannot be taken out to sea and dumped because it will just wash up on shore again, as well as

poison our fish stocks. We could and can truck it to the U.S. like they do in Toronto at a cost of several million a year, but even they are beginning to object. I can honestly say the Europeans are further ahead in this technology than us poor backwater immigrants in North America. What I suggest you

do is contact a company like Montreal Engineering and have them send you all the information about the EFW plants, or better still, contact Anne Mulvale, the former Mayor of Oakville, Ontario and talk to her. To my estimation the best solution is using EFW plants to product the electricity that is becoming

Incineration doesn’t belong here Dear Mr. Strachan, Actually, I know quite a lot about Waste-toEnergy for solid waste. I’ve done three years of international research. I’ve also travelled Europe quite a bit and have been in touch with the medical and scientific community that has studied this issue extensively. In addition, the Fraser Valley Regional District commissioned an independant evaluation by well-respected UBC scientist Ian McKendry to study the advisability of locating such a facility in this particular airshed, who concluded there was far too much to risk building one here. You should know we have one of the most unique, threatened and already overstressed airsheds in the world that confines pollutants here. We already have too high a degree of people suffering from health problems related to the pollution. In addition, we produce

60 per cent of the province’s farm receipts, so our food supply would be at risk as well as our extremely rich and rare ecosystems. We object to any new significant point source of air pollution, particularly one that we don’t even have the technology to adequately measure and monitor the many toxic pollutants from – even with the very best of today’s technology. Certainly not when it is so unnecessary, since they have several other options. Of all the pollution in our Fraser Valley, we only generate 14 per cent of it. 57 per cent is from Metro Vancouver and 29 from the U.S. We feel we have a right to be respected when we say “enough.” Last year, in response to us repeatedly point-

ing out our sensitive airshed, Metro Vancouver said that there were many waste incinerators in airsheds just like ours, so we asked them to please list them and their geographic and meteorological features. After technical analysis, we found that not one of them had the same challenges as ours. To date, we have not been able to find any airsheds like ours where there are incinerators – let alone any success stories. So even if you feel incineration of waste is an acceptable way to deal with our waste, sensitive and confined airsheds are not the place for them. Even a consultant from Europe that Metro Vancouver brought out a few years back said as much. Incineration of waste

is not the success story the industry would have you believe. There are increasing bans, calls for bans, massive protests, lawsuits against them and shutdowns because they don’t live up to their promises. Even if you do want to call Europe’s experience a success, that wouldn’t translate here because our waste is 20 times more toxic than Europe’s due to the many more chemicals and toxins allowed in our products and packaging than is allowed in Europe. This is already proven by the disastrous experience with incinerating waste in the US where their waste stream is similar to Canada’s. Patricia Ross

so much in demand. Ms. Ross before creating fear amongst

the citizenry of the Fraser Valley, go and learn what the ben-

efits are instead. G. W, Strachan Picton, Ontario

Pro hockey community comes together in summer Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News

Surveying the scene at the Matsqui Recreation Centre ice rink on Thursday afternoon, Dean Arsene can’t help but smile.

At 31, Arsene is one of the elder statesmen in the Abbotsford pro hockey fraternity. A decade ago, when he was a young guy coming up through the ranks, the members of that fraternity could

be counted with the fingers on one hand. On this day, there are a dozen pro hockey players on the ice at MRC, running through uptempo drills under the watchful eye of local coaches Brad

Bowen and Andy Neilsen. The practices, which run twice a week during the summer, draw as many as 15 players. It’s evidence that the Abby hockey scene is healthy and growing.

“For the longest time, there were only a couple guys coming up,” Arsene marveled. “First it was Brad Moran, then myself, and then Ryan Craig. “But now, you’ve got a lot of younger guys

who are great players. To be able to train with them right in your back yard is a perfect opportunity. It’s a lot of fun.” The sessions bring together a who’s who of Abbotsford Minor Hockey products. There’s Arsene, a two-time AHL Calder Cup winner who recently signed with the Phoenix Coyotes organization. There’s David Van der Gulik, a former Abbotsford Heat player who is heading into his second season in the Colorado Avalanche system.

Siblings Kyle and Clayton Cumiskey played for the NHL’s Avalanche and the WHL’s Everett Silvertips, respectively, last season. Towering 6’8” enforcer Riley Emmerson spent the bulk of 201-11 with the ECHL’s Utah Grizzlies. Yo u n g s t e r s Derek Grant (AHL Binghamton Senators) and Mark Isherwood (ECHL Alaska Aces) are both coming off championships in their first pro seasons. The local crew is Continued on A19

augmented by several Abbotsford Heat players, both past and current – goalie Leland Irving, defenceman Chris Breen and forward Cam Cunning – and a handful of players from around the Fraser Valley including Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins goalie Brad Thiessen of Aldergrove, and Chicago Blackhawks prospect Kyle Beach, a Kelowna native who spends his summers in the Semiahmoo area. It’s a diverse group that brings with it some interesting dynamics. Last season, Arsene and Beach were divisional rivals in the AHL, playing for the Peoria Rivermen and Rockford IceHogs, respectively. Arsene, a rugged defenceman, had many a run-in with Beach, an agitating forward. “It’s one of those things where, during the season, you’re fighting for position with your team,” Arsene said with a chuckle. “But when you see guys in the summer, you shake hands and you put it all aside. It’s the beauty of hockey – guys are able to see that what

happens on the ice doesn’t translate off it.” The summer skates at MRC are unique in that the players don’t scrimmage – it’s all fundamental skill work. “It’s amazing – these guys come here, and that’s all they want to do,” said Bowen, a former New York Islanders scout who heads up the hockey academy at Yale Secondary these days. “It doesn’t matter what age they are, they’re fighting for jobs, and they have to get better. The older guys, like David, have to compete with the younger guys coming up, like Derek.” Van der Gulik, who recently inked a new one-year, two-way contract with the Avalanche, said the opportunity for on-ice work alongside fellow pros is tremendously beneficial. “Years ago, we never had anything like this,” he said. “Right now, it’s about getting the puck, getting a feel for things again.”

DOWNES ROAD CONSTRUCTION UPDATE BC Hydro continues to construct a new, underground duct bank along Downes Road. This work is resulting in temporary traffic delays, so motorists are encouraged to detour north to Townshipline Road to avoid the construction zone. Crews are on site from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday to Saturday. The majority of this work will result in single-lane, alternating traffic. However, the installation of three culverts will require a three-day, full road closure to non-residents and non-emergency vehicles. This road closure will occur August 15–17, 2011 between Ross Road and Bradner Road. BC Hydro recognizes the inconvenience this construction may cause and we thank you for your patience and understanding.
