Celebrating 100 years Celebrations mark 100th anniversary of Abbotsford’s historic Sikh temple Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News

Thousands of local and visiting Sikhs were joined by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Premier Christy Clark, the consulgeneral of India and many other high-profile guests in the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Gur Sikh Temple on Sunday morning. Abbotsford MP Ed Fast called the longeststanding Sikh temple in North America, “a great story of two cultures coming together” – those being the pioneer Trethewey family,

who donated lumber for the temple from their Mill Lake sawmill, and the Sikh pioneers who hauled the timber on their backs to the temple site at South Fraser Way and Fairlane Street. Fast, who is the Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, introduced Harper as “a musician and hockey history buff.” “100 years – isn’t this a fantastic milestone,” Harper said in his address to the crowd, adding that the national historic site “speaks volumes about Canada’s role in the

world as a sanctuary.” He acknowledged the Sikh pioneers suffered the “cruel sting of discrimination,” but added that Canadians are characterized by their ability to leave old arguments behind. “We celebrate what has ultimately brought us together as Canadians,” said Harper. He called the temple a shrine to Sikhism in Canada, and a place where Sikhs will be able to visit to learn about the courage of their early pioneers. The Abbotsford Police Department is asking for more witnesses to come forward after a suspicious fire destroyed an Oakhill Drive home last Friday evening. Const. Ian MacDonald said several witnesses reported seeing a man running down the street immediately after the explosion, which occurred in the 34000 block. A suspect description is not yet being released. Neighbours reported hearing an explosion and then seeing smoke at the home at about 7:45 p.m. Crews from Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service arrived to find heavy flames coming from the roof of the two-storey residence. Approximately 25 firefighters and eight trucks from four halls battled the blaze. No one was home at the time. MacDonald said the cause of the fire is not known, or is not being revealed. The Abbotsford News has learned the residence is owned by dentist Dr. Clark Stelmaschuk. Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225.

Abbotsford Police seized a sawed-off shotgun, a rifle, ammunition and methamphetamine last Thursday night from a home that was the scene of a bust last month in which 12 weapons were found. Charges have since been laid against Jonathan Jay Jeffrey Wood, 43, an occupant of the home in the 34000 block of Gladys Avenue. A 43-year-old woman was also arrested, and has been released with possible charges pending. Abbotsford Police’s drug enforcement unit and patrol officers, as well as members of the Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team, executed a search warrant at the home at about 6:30 p.m. “It (the house) was on police radar, and it was a concern to the neighbourhood,” said Const. Ian MacDonald. This was the same location where a search on July 2 yielded eight rifles and four handguns, one of which was found loaded, on a table. The rest were under a mattress and other locations around the home. Wood was also arrested at that time, but charges for that bust have not yet been laid. Following the latest raid, Wood was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and six weapons offences, including improper storage and careless use of a firearm. MacDonald said Wood is not considered to be a “major player” with any local gangs.

Challenges ahead The anti-HST voters were celebrating last week, as the harmonized sales tax was defeated through referendum. And now, we’ll all pay for this kneejerk reaction in the coming years. Yes, it was democracy in action. And it undoubtedly delivered a message to the B.C. Liberal government. However, this outcome was not reasoned, well-informed judgment as much as it was politics and emotion. It’s not a good approach to determining long-term economic strategy. For all the cheering about the public finally having a say in government decisions, the HST vote showed the downside of establishing tax policies via referendum. The defeat of the HST was largely a backlash against the Liberals, and dislike of a new tax. Much misinformation and misconception still existed among the electorate when it came time to vote.

With the rebates available to seniors, and the proposed reduction of the tax from 12 to 10 per cent over three years, the impact of the HST on average citizens was not, in the larger context, nearly as significant as some opponents maintained. Yet the advantages it offered in terms of business competitiveness and job creation were major. Those will be lost, as the province reverts back to the antiquated, complex provincial sales tax. The process of doing so will be hugely expensive, including repayment of $1.6 billion in transition funds provided by Ottawa. Furthermore, the additional revenue generated by the HST will vanish. That will have to be replaced from other sources (taxes), or it will result in budget cuts. In either case, many of the people who voted against the HST – but demand top-grade government services – will be unhappy again.

Usurping the rights of ownership Mark

Rushton On the

Other Hand When I bought my property nearly a quarter century ago, one of its attractive features was a great view of Mt. Baker. Over the intervening years, the trees on the 10-acre property to the south-east grew, leaving little more than a flat Frisbee-shaped vista of the summit. Then this spring came the sound of chainsaws and the crashing of trees. Over a few days, the result was elating – the view returned at no cost to me. The owner of the property, who rents it out, decided to let a little sunlight onto the house, that hadn’t seen any in decades. He hired a contractor and some 60 trees were selectively removed, about an acre or less cleared and cleaned up, creating a lovely open area scattered with huge trees behind the rental house. With a little grass, the area will look park-like, able to sustain a horse or other pet. The other nine remain a bush and tree-filled jungle. The tenant got sunshine, I got a view,

and the owner ended up in a world of hurt because unknowingly he had contravened the City of Abbotsford’s relatively new ‘tree bylaw.’ In short, what this bylaw has done is take away the rights of ownership, without compensation, without a reduction in taxation. You own the trees on your property, but you can’t do anything to them without paying a stiff penalty to the city. You certainly cannot remove them, despite this area on Sumas Mountain being Abbotsford’s future, and only, remaining residential development area. The rest of the city, save downtown, is primarily within the agricultural land reserve. Yet if your property is within the ALR, as is most of Bradner and Mt. Lehman, you can chop down trees at your pleasure, for ALR lands are exempt from the bylaw. So, in areas that are expected over the next few decades to house the tens of thousands of people who will move here – the provincial government projects one million more people in B.C. within the next 20 years; 800,000 of them moving into the Surrey-Langley-Abbotsford areas – are now restricted ‘green-space.’ These people will need homes, and to create subdivisions, bush and trees must

be removed for streets, schools, homes and so forth. But now the costs of development have increased dramatically – $500 a pop for each tree! Friends in an old part of Abbotsford have a huge fir that threatens their home and all others surrounding them. To remove the danger, they must pay $1,000

The tenant got sunshine, I got a view, and the owner ended up in a world of hurt. to the ‘approved’ tree cutter, and another $500 to the city – simply to make their neighbourhood safe. In fact, they were told they could be charged up to $546 for each foot of diameter of the trunk! Yet in the Kootenay, cities are paying to remove trees in forest-interface areas to combat the forest fire danger. In Yosemite, the first U.S. national park and birthplace of the environmental watchdog Sierra Club, they are cutting trees with support of environmentalists to return the iconic

views of this spectacular park. Within a thousand meters or so of my home, and the property across from me, First Nations have timber licences, and the ability to clear-cut thousands of acres. So, back to the gentleman who owns the land I have been describing. I took a senior member of the city’s economic development committee to have a look at the site. His verdict: The guy did the right thing. The city’s verdict: Bad man who needed to be used as an example for contravention of this ill-conceived bylaw. Massive penalties were threatened, and finally, a decision. For selectively clearing and vastly improving a very small portion of his own land, he ended up paying the city in penalty (and read the next three words very slowly) twenty thousand dollars! This is a travesty. On the other hand, if the city charges $500 for cutting a tree down, shouldn’t it also pay you $500 to plant one? Thus, as I plant 65 trees across the front of my house I eagerly await the city’s large financial appreciation of my contribution to the greening of Abbotsford. And as for my annual firewood forays – hello Bradner!

Cascades edged by Whitman

Poor free throw shooting proved costly for the University of the Fraser Valley men’s basketball team on Friday, as they fell 62-58 to Whitman College in exhibition

action. The Cascades hit just four of 14 attempts from the charity stripe, and that subpar shooting performance helped their NCAA Div. III

guests to snatch a slender victory at the Envision Athletic Centre. “Any chance we had to win went out the window there,” Cascades coach

Pilots win big in preseason The Abbotsford Pilots blasted the Grandview Steelers 8-1 in exhibition action on Friday at MSA Arena, but head coach Jim Cowden was hardly impressed by the lopsided score. The Pilots bench boss was quick to note that the Steelers’ roster was largely comprised of callow prospects, while the Abbotsford lineup included eight returning veterans. At this stage, with the regular season still more than three weeks

New convenience and technology features add to fuel efficient Fusion The Ford Fusion has been a huge hit, the number one selling domestic car in 2009, thanks to distinctive features, smart technology and exceptional quality and satisfaction ratings. And, since Fusion offers something for everyone – a Hybrid model that’s North America’s most fuel-efficient midsize sedan, a Sport version and a selection of gaspowered engines paired with six-speed transmissions – there’s no reason for midsize sedan shoppers to look anywhere else. Fresh off its record-breaking 2010 run, Fusion enters the 2011 model year with even more safety, technology and convenience offerings, including MyKey, available rain-sensing wipers and HD Radio. Integrated blind-spot mirrors have been added to cars without the optional Blind Spot.

Information System (BLIS®), and the award-winning Ford SYNC® communications and infotainment system can now be integrated with the available touch-screen voice-activated navigation system. Fusion’s exterior design gives the car a sporty, upscale appearance along with aerodynamics that help reduce wind noise and improve fuel economy. The car’s front end sports a powerfully domed hood and aggressive grille, while underbody treatments further boost Fusion’s fuel economy. Overall, Fusion is designed to appeal to customers eager for a fun-to-drive midsize sedan. With all models, the interior design team created a contemporary, technical look with metallic finishes on the instrument panel that carry through on the center console, doors and steering wheel. The instrument panel is finished with a soft upper and lower skin, and instrument panel displays and switches glow with a contemporary ice blue lighting. Front-wheel drive and on-demand all-wheel drive are available on Fusion models with a 3.0-liter V-6 engine and with the Fusion Sport 3.5-liter engine. Both V-6 engines come standard with SelectShift for individual gear control. The versatility in the powertrain systems creates a wide range of options designed to fit every need.

Getting the scoop on ice cream scoopers Katie Bartel Black Press

If I could eat ice cream all day everyday, I would. Oh yes, I would. Strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, maple walnut, pecan, chocolate chip cookie dough, vanilla swiss almond, brownie bliss, you hand me the flavour and I’d be licking her up, breakfast, lunch, dinner and for multiple snacks and desserts in between. For years my dream job was to work in an ice cream parlour. How could it not be? Earlier this month, I got that opportunity. Mighty Moose Ice Cream in Yarrow is a side-of-the-road ice cream trailer owned by brothers-in-law Lance Martens, 22, and Josh Kraubner, 25. While the brothers run the show behind the scenes, it’s the teenage scoopers on the frontline. Mighty Moose is 16-year-old Sami Hesketh’s first job, and even though she’s only been working it since June, she’s already well versed in the tricks of the trade.

It’s not a job for weaklings, she says. “You can’t be weak, you’ve got to have a little muscle so you’re able to scoop.” Sami pulls the scooper out from the rinsing tub, and with a quick jerk of her arm, flicks the excess water off. She braces her body against the freezer, one leg back, one pushed up against it, hip leaning in, and reaches down into the bucket. She scrapes the strawberry cheesecake down from the sides, forms a hefty tennis ball sized scoop in the middle and then piles even more on top until she’s made a single scoop that looks more like five scoops – an ice cream lover’s most delectable dream come true. “There’s no going to the gym for that girl, she’s getting a good wrist workout right there,” an older gentleman heartily remarks as he awaits his cone. Sami smiles. Her right arm, she’s noticed, has gotten bigger. “But not my left; I’m not ambidextrous.” Sami doesn’t follow a standard measure-

Alyx Hesketh, 18, scoops ice cream into a bowl at Mighty Moose Ice Cream on Yarrow Central Road. ment when scooping her masterpieces. “I just eyeball it,” she shrugs. “Generally, if you think it’s too big, than it’s probably big enough.” A scooper after my own heart. But not all flavours cooperate. Some, like cookies and cream, are real good for scooping. It’s not too hard like the mint chocolate chip flavour, which is like trying to dig at a rock, or too flaky like the raspberry frozen yogurt, which almost always falls apart within seconds of reaching the cone, or too drippy like the strawberry

cheesecake and tiger flavours, which have syrups added to them. “If you’re not careful, they’ll drip all over the place,” says Sami, who ends most shifts with her right arm died blue and pink. At first look, the job of a scooper is a dream come true: sunny days, 16 buckets of different flavoured ice creams to sample, the aroma of fresh homemade waffle cones wafting all around. But Sami’s quick to enlighten me on the reality of the job. It’s not all ice cream bliss, she says. Continued on B8

Behind every work zone cone is a worker in a vulnerable position. Each cone stands for someone’s father, mother, son, or daughter. That’s why it’s important to know that thousands of people working by the roadside in B.C. are counting on you to slow down and drive with care when approaching a “cone zone.“ WorkSafeBC.com

Days at the stand go through peaks and valleys. Scoopers can go hours without a customer, and then, in the blink of an eye, have a busload of them lining up out onto the street. Being the only one behind the counter, it can get stressful, she says, as she assembles a six-person ice cream order at a pace attuned to a 10-person assembly line. If supplies, such as the waffle cones, or desired ice cream flavours run out, she has to make her customers wait – something she does not like to do.

“You want to get their ice cream out to them fast, keep them happy,” she says. “And you don’t want to disappoint on size. “When it’s too busy it can be overwhelming for just one person, and when it’s slow it can be really boring because you’re by yourself,” she says. After about an hour of watching Sami’s every move, taking notes, asking her question after question, it’s my turn. The customer on the other side of the counter requests the hardest flavour to scoop, mint chocolate chip, but I’m not afraid. Grab scooper, check.

Flick excess water, check. Brace leg, check. Scoop the mint chocolate ... oh no. The bucket, which is three quarters empty, shifts and bangs into the next bucket over, just as I start scooping, my arm goes flinging into the side, and my scoop looks more like a pebble than a fivetiered tennis ball. Major fail. At the end of my shift, arms sticky, and apron an ice cream mess, I indulge in a cone of my own. (All scoopers get one free ice cream a shift.) Even though I didn’t make much of a scooper, I left the shop in ice cream heaven.
