An Abbotsford educator recently left for Uganda, where she will teach former child soldiers and children who have been orphaned by war. Amy Schmidt was already in Uganda last July for six weeks, working with the Lighthouse Primary School, a facility run by the Uganda Jesus Village. It is just outside of Kampala, the largest city in Uganda. Now she will return for a full semester, or four months. Schmidt’s father had adventures in Africa, and she has made a personal study of the problems in African, and the strife in Uganda in particular. Children in Northern Uganda are abducted into the Lord’s Resistance Army, a sectarian group which wants to replace the Ugandan government with a theocratic state. The LRA and its leader Joseph Kony have been accused of murder and atrocities against civilians. The LRA has been waging war in the country for 23 years. That, and a rampant AIDS epidemic, has left the country with 2.3 million orphans. Half of the population is under the age of 18. Schmidt said the 200-or-so orphans at the Lighthouse Primary School have all been affected by war. Some have seen their entire villages relo-

cated, some saw their parents or grandparents murdered, and many were forced to take up arms for the LRA. Despite the tragedies they have suffered, Schmidt found the kids to be not so different from the children she teaches in the Abbotsford Public school system. They love to borrow an iPod and listen to music, which is a huge part of their culture, or ham it up for a photo. “That’s what I was most surprised by – how much they reminded me of normal kids. During her first trip there, Schmidt made a m u s i c video with Lighthouse kids, and it was soon running on Ugandan television. It can be seen on Youtube by searching “Uganda Just Wanna Dance. She said it has a simple message: “They should be able to just be kids, and dance and sing. She said the work of the Uganda Jesus Village brings hope to the situation. The job of the teachers at Lighthouse is to raise children to be future leaders. “As a teacher, you always want to inspire, said Schmidt. “But their story speaks for itself – no matter what has happened to you, don’t let it stop you from being what you are meant to be.

Defendant’s claim says he passed polygraphs Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

A Calgary man who played minor hockey in Abbotsford when he was a teen has filed a notice of civil claim in BC Supreme Court, seeking damages for alleged sexual abuse by his assistant coach. Robert Callan, 42, claims that Donald Cooke – an RCMP officer now living in Toronto – sexually assaulted him between 1982 to 1984 when he was a member of an Abbotsford AAA midget hockey team. He was between 14 and 16 years old at the time. Cooke has never been charged, although he was investigated by police in 2004 after four B.C. men came forward, alleging that he sexually assaulted them at the time they were playing minor hockey in the 1980s.

Crown counsel concluded there was not enough evidence to charge him. Cooke, meanwhile, filed his own lawsuit in Ontario last year against the RCMP, claiming mistreatment by the force over the allegations and the investigation, and seeking $13.5 million in compensation. Cooke’s statement of claim said false allegations of sexual abuse were made by four individuals whom he kicked off the hockey team because they were in possession of stolen equipment. Callan’s civil claim is the second filed against Cooke for alleged sexual abuse while he was stationed in Abbotsford from February 1982 to August 1986. The first, from Graeme Wilson, was filed in July 2005 and is still before the

courts. Wilson was not a hockey player, but was arrested by Cooke in connection to an arson investigation at his family’s residence. He was questioned and released without charge. He alleged that Cooke offered to drop criminal charges against him in exchange for sexual favours between 1983 and 1986. Callan’s claim names as defendants Cooke, the Attorney General of Canada, the RCMP and the Abbotsford Minor Hockey Association, which was known as the Abbotsford Matsqui MHA at the time. Wilson’s claim names the Attorney Generals of B.C. and Canada. Both claim that the alleged abuse led to pain and suffering that includes depression, sleep problems, post traumatic stress

disorder and chronic anger. Both claims state that the men have “sustained a loss of employment and earnings and economic opportunity” and have faced ongoing costs for counselling, medication and other expenses. None of the allegations has been proved in court. In his statement of defence in response to Wilson’s claim, Cooke denied all the allegations. In his lawsuit against the RCMP, references are made to separate polygraph tests that he took regarding the accusations made by Callan and Wilson. The polygrapher concluded that Cooke was “conclusively telling the truth” in both cases when he stated the allegations were untrue, according to the statement of claim.

Residential truck parking proposal nixed Recommendation removed from report Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News

Commercial trucks will not be allowed to park in residential areas of Abbotsford. Council was set to debate the Mayor’s Task Force on Commercial Trucking report last night, but missing from the recommendations was a proposal for truck owners to park their rigs at home. When a draft of the report was made public in May, many people voiced concerns regarding residential parking. “We had a large amount of negative feedback,” said

Margaret Thornton, director of planning for the city. Public meetings were held and responses were collected and brought back to the task force. Thornton said members of the Abbotsford police and fire departments also raised concerns regarding safety issues if commercial trucks were allowed to park in residential areas. “It’s off the table,” said Thornton, who was set to present the final recommendations last night. They include:

1. A commitment by the city to fast track all development applications for new or expanded commercial truck parking facilities; 2.The use of select gravel pits for truck parking; 3. Encourage the retention of existing Ministry of Transportation sites for parking and; 4. Examine a pilot project to allow overnight street parking in industrial areas only. The pilot project would be a six-month test and be designed for long haul truckers who

Flavelle will seek seat on council this fall Consistent council-watcher offers opinions on key issues

Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News

Longtime council watcher Aird Flavelle wants a seat at the table. He has announced he will run for council in the municipal election on Nov. 15. Flavelle is owner of MSA Computers, and an avid volunteer with restorative justice, the Hospice Society, Rotary and in his church.

He has attended most council and police board meetings over the past five years, and says his attendance record would rival that of most councillors. He also ran for a seat in the last municipal election. Flavelle holds some strong opinions about local issues. For example, he says with the city’s average daily water use rates being less than half of what is available, there is no reason for

council to spend $400 million or more upgrading the water supply at this time. “At a bare minimum, we could put it off for 10 years,” he asserts. He calls Police Chief Bob Rich “a community hero” for the way he has tackled violent crime, but says property crime is still too high, and the city must deal with mentally ill and drug-addicted street people who are chronic offenders.

And, he said municipal taxes keep rising, and will for the foreseeable future, unless changes are made. “I would like to see some reins on the system,” he said. Flavelle suggests tax increases be limited to the rate of inflation, unless they are raised through referendum. “Abbotsford is a wonderful, wonderful place. Council has done a good job, but we can still do better.”

DOWNES ROAD CONSTRUCTION UPDATE BC Hydro continues to construct a new, underground duct bank along Downes Road. This work is resulting in temporary traffic delays, so motorists are encouraged to detour north to Townshipline Road to avoid the construction zone.

Crews are on site from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday to Saturday.

The majority of this work will result in single-lane, alternating traffic. However, the installation of three culverts will require a three-day, full road closure to non-residents and non-emergency vehicles. This road closure will occur August 15–17, 2011 between Ross Road and Bradner Road. 2986

For 50 years, BC Hydro has been providing clean, reliable electricity to our customers. Today we are planning for the next 50 years by investing in new projects, upgrading existing facilities and working with our customers to conserve energy through Power Smart.

Abbotsford automotive repair businesses are being warned to lock up their valuables after a trio of break-ins over the weekend. Abbotsford Police Const. cash box was taken, and at the third, the culprit rifled around but didn’t find any money. Other items such as valuable tools and keys to customers’ vehicles were not touched at any of the businesses. The break-ins took place in the 2000 block of Abbotsford Way, the 31000 block of Peardonville Road, and the 1800 block of

McCallum Road. Only one of the businesses had an alarm, which was sounded at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday. At all three sites, the thief tampered with a lock to get into the building. MacDonald advised businesses to leave empty cash boxes in plain view and to lock up valuables to discourage thieves from breaking in.

Valley attracting film crews Kevin MILLS Abbotsford News

A $10,000 grant from the provincial government will be used by the Fraser Valley Regional District to attract and provide services to film and video producers from around the world. Motion picture and television producers spent more than $1 billion in B.C. during 2010. Communities are sought to provide locations for various film projects, including movies, television series, documentaries and commercials. Abbotsford is no exception, drawing in several projects each year. Abbotsford has attracted Hollywood productions in the past (including Scary Movie 4 in 2005 and Disney’s Space Buddies in 2008) but the bulk of filming in this area is done for commercials and lower budget television films. And 2011 has been steady so far.

According to Tracy Boudreau, communications specialist with the City of Abbotsford, seven different projects have been shot in town this year, including the television films Trading Christmas (in July) and Recoil (in May). The television series Consumed has filmed here on several occasions, while Fringe shot locally back in March. Another television series, The Haunting Hour, filmed in town two weeks ago. A&W and OK Tire have also shot commercials this year. In September, 2010, downtown Abbotsford was transformed into Santa Cruz, Calif. for the made-for-television film On Strike For Christmas. A film crew, along with star Daphne Zuniga (Melrose Place) shot on location for three days. “We are pretty much on par this year, compared to others,” said Boudreau.

She said a normal year would see 22 projects shot in Abbotsford, while a down year averages 17. Financially, the city doesn’t get a lot of money for allowing crews to film here, but Boudreau said the economic spin-off is a benefit to the local economy. “That’s the reason we are trying to be as film-friendly as possible.” Catering companies, hotels, restaurants and even hair dressers are some of the examples she gave of businesses which benefit from local productions. While the city has yet to perform a study to assess the economic impact of the film industry, Boudreau suggested the FVRD may want to use the provincial grant money for that purpose. No official plans for the grant money have yet been announced.

Let’s enjoy our natural surroundings Summer was slow in arriving this year, but now that the sun is shining on a regular basis, it’s time for people to get outside and take advantage. B.C. is an area of world-class natural beauty, and people from all over the world travel here to experience it. But at times, there might be a tendency for locals to take it for granted. Summer is a particularly important season in terms of promoting active lifestyles to children – and according to Statistics Canada, about one in four Canadian children are overweight or obese. Families would be wise to take full advantage of these last few weeks of August before school starts again. There are countless opportunities to enjoy the landscape in the Fraser Valley. The region is an outdoor adventurer’s paradise, with a web of hiking

trails that showcase picturesque mountains, lakes and rivers. Right in the heart of Abbotsford, Mill Lake Park facilitates a wide variety of outdoor activities. Scenic sights within a short drive include waterfalls like Cascade (Mission) or Bridal (Chilliwack), or the Othello Tunnels near Hope. For a further immersion in nature, the provincial park system offers topnotch camping experiences. Local lakes and rivers yield worldclass fishing, as well as the opportunity to swim or catch some rays on the beach. For the thrill-seeking set, activities like mountain biking or white water rafting offer an adrenaline boost. Let’s get outside, be active, soak up some Vitamin D, and enjoy our natural surroundings.

No matter where you go, technology intrudes Mark

Rushton On the

Other Hand Last weekend began about a month ago. Daughter, husband and baby were sitting around the patio table when talk turned to camping. Son-in-law, I’m certain, had never really seen dirt until he first visited our place from the cities of England. However time and travel have accustomed him to life in Canada, and the fact that not everything is paved over. So during the patio chat he mentioned that he would enjoy going camping. Ever one to push the envelope, I offered up a backcountry fishing trip, complete with ‘never been in one before’ paddle around a lake in a tippy canoe. The enthusiasm was at first muted, and since the women in the group refuse to ‘camp’ in anything less than a four-star hotel, it was with some mild convincing that we finally determined just the two of us would embark on the ‘great adven-

ture’. Thus last Friday morning, the truck loaded the night before and the canoe mounted on my rough-country hunting trailer, we set off for a high elevation lake northwest of Merritt. Now the son-in-law is a technophile. Every free minute is spent doing something on a computer (despite working on one for eight or more hours every day). So the camping trip came with great forewarning – no internet, no WiFi, not even, gasp, cellular phone service. I’m sure that amplified his trepidation, but into the truck we climbed and hit the freeway heading east and north. Before we reached the Vedder Canal, he was already on his iPhone checking baby pictures, the latest football (soccer to us!) scores from the U.K., even checking on Google Maps where we were going. I pointed out that where we were going is likely not on an Internet map, and certainly not the route we were about to traverse … even I could hardly remember how to get there since my last visit was some 20 years ago. Fortunately, I thought, as we rolled down Highway 8 west of Merritt, cell service evaporated. The iPhone would

be tucked away until Sunday afternoon when civilization once again appeared through the windshield of the truck. However, ever the optimist in technical wonder, he sent off a text message, and hit ‘send’ just before we pulled off the pavement. I thought that would be it.

Ever the optimist in technical wonder, he sent off a text message, and hit ‘send’ just before we pulled off the pavement. After an hour and half of dirt trail, the last seven kilometers taking up 60 minutes of that, we arrived at the lake, grateful for the rock-strewn track providing solitude and the lake all to ourselves. A while later, after setting up camp, lighting a campfire beside which I was ensconced with a cool one (even at 1,500

meters it was a very hot day, the fire for ambience only) the son-in-law enthusiastically exclaimed “I got a reply.” After a surprised, “You’ve got to be kidding!?!?!” from me, we discovered that for some very odd reason, in the middle of virtually nowhere, a cellular phone signal would fade in and out. There went my plans for a techno-free weekend. The thoughts of just us, canoe, tent and axe, experiencing the Canadian vision of ourselves as rugged timeless outdoorsmen suddenly shattered and intruded upon by computers, cell phones and modernity. Shocked as I was by this intrusion on my ‘get-away-from-it-all’ location, even I couldn’t resist the challenge to light up my Blackberry. Sure enough there was a signal strong enough for me to not only text, but actually make a phone call. And with that, a little tear nearly appeared at the loss of one of the priceless values of our fabulous wilderness. No matter where we go today, the tentacles of technology can’t be avoided without a conscious effort to ignore them. markrushton@abbynews.com

Recycle more garbage If only there was the political will, many jobs could be created at the dumpsites in our municipalities, just sorting garbage. I have been going to the Abbotsford “transfer station” regularly as we are currently remodeling. I see a giant-loader picking up things like old furniture, discarded building materials, and things like potted plants, sports equipment, broken umbrellas, kids’ toys, etc. I suggest we are trucking a lot of things up to Cache Creek that are fully recyclable. What is needed is more sorting. Of course there are those disposable diapers and unwashed food containers which seem to be a huge problem but I know some entrepreneurial person has developed a digester that could break down the biological stuff and spit out some clean cans and bottles. Certainly there are giant shredders that would breakdown larger items like furniture so the springs and stuffing could be sorted out. San Francisco claims to have nearly 90 per cent

of their garbage recycled. So we see this is obviously doable and would be a very good target. What needs to be done is: Build some conveyer belts and hire some people, give them a mask and some gloves, start making piles of sorted stuff instead of loading it up on a barge/truck all mixed together. Identify sources who will responsibly re-use the materials. As always, I have over simplified things. I do this because I am unsure of the brainpower of someone like Lois Jackson and just want her to absorb the general idea of sorting through that Delta-mountain of hers. There would be some organization and management certainly and things like shredders, digesters, warehouses and employees will cost money to get started, but so does everything else. In the long run it may just be a smarter investment than doing nothing or continuing talks with the proponents who want to build incinerators. Anne Graham

Unconcerned about air? I am concerned and appalled by the decision to allow an incinerator to be set up in the Fraser Valley. Is the minister of the environment so lacking in knowledge of his portfolio that he is unaware of the very real fragility of our airshed, or

does he not care? Is the premier unconcerned and indifferent to our concerns? Mayor Peary is doing a bit of fence-sitting in this matter, and does not appear to want to rock the boat and wants the dialogue to “remain civil.”

SE2 is not beyond memory, as is evidenced by Councillor Ross’s remarks, and there are many residents of the Fraser Valley who were at the time, and still are worried about any threat to the air we breathe. B. Fionn Young

The former executive director of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce has been charged with criminal harassment, in addition to the assault charge he was already facing. Const. Ian MacDonald said David D. Hull was arrested on June 24 after a man reported to the front counter of the Abbotsford Police Department, saying he had received text messages and emails from a particular individual that were of concern. The criminal harassment charge was sworn Friday in Abbotsford provincial court. MacDonald said an offence of that nature could apply to either the content of the messages or the quantity – or both. “You’re talking about unwanted emails, and the content would be disturbing or cause a nuisance or cause some fear on the part of the recipient, he said. Hull was previously charged with assault after his first arrest on May 28. On that date, police received a report from a 35-year-old woman that an assault had taken place. On June 5, the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce announced in a press release that Hull was being suspended without pay, but did not provide further explanation. On June 23, Hull tendered his resignation to the chamber, of which he had been executive director since 2005. Hull was slated to appear yesterday in Abbotsford provincial court for an arraignment hearing on the assault charge.

Ole Miss completes sweep vs. UFV The University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball team fell to the Mississippi Rebels for the second time in three nights, dropping an 85-69 decision to the visiting NCAA Division 1 squad at the Envision Athletic Centre on Friday. Ole Miss jumped out to an early lead, but the Cascades stuck around, trailing 20-16 after the first quarter and 37-33 at halftime. The Rebels pulled away steadily after the break to seal the 16-point victory. Senior point guard Tessa Klassen paced the Cascades with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists. Courtney Bartel chipped in with 13 points and Aieisha Luyken scored 10. Whitney Harneth led the way for the Rebels, scoring a game-high 21 points. The Cascades women wrap up their preJOHN MORROW Abbotsford News season series against NCAA foes on Sunday, Aug. 14, when they host University of UFV’s Celeste Dyck drives to the hoop during Louisville at 7 p.m. Friday’s game at the Envision Athletic Centre.

Bandits finish off Rebels Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News

The Valley Rebels saw their season come to an end on Wednesday evening, as they fell 10-6 to the Tri-City Bandits in Game 4 of their West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association semifinal series at Burnaby Lake Arena. The victory gave the Bandits a 3-1 triumph in the best-of-five series. "We ran out of gas," Rebels head coach Jim Nishiyama analyzed. "We only had 15 players, and it was tough. Our defence was pushed to the limit, and they were exhausted." The Rebels faced challenges both mental and physical heading into Wednesday's do-or-die game. In the aftermath of the Bandits' 7-5 victory in Game 3 last week, the

Rebels lodged a formal complaint with the WCSLA, charging that one of the officials assigned to the game plays for one of the Bandits' feeder teams in Port Moody. WCSLA commissioner Iris Parkyn initially ruled in the Rebels' favour, but Tri-City appealed to the B.C. Lacrosse senior directorate. At a hearing Tuesday evening, the initial ruling was overturned and Tri-City's victory was allowed to stand. The Rebels also lost starting goalie Matt Morehouse after he injured his back at work. Backup Cam Janzen took over between the pipes, and played well in the Game 4 loss. "He hasn't had a start in probably a month and a half, but he held us in the game," Nishiyama said.

Refined features and thoughtful engineering

Camry Hybrid You’ll never get accused of recklessness for buying a Toyota Camry. It’s safe, comfortable, dependable, relatively attractive and altogether predictable. And based on the overwhelming sales numbers, North Americans are happy with a reliable and affordable set of wheels for the family. The Camry has been the top-selling passenger vehicle for nine of the past 10 years.

From emotionally-charged styling, ample power and performance, fresh standard features and options packages and impressive fuel efficiency, the 2011 Toyota Camry adds up to exceptional value for Canadian drivers; just ask the over 370,000 Camry drivers on the road today. And with six models in the 2011 line-up, featuring a choice of engine sizes and models, there’s a

Toyota Camry for everyone. “For 2011, we have enhanced the very popular Toyota Camry with USB audio inputs, Bluetooth capability and XM Satellite Radio - offered as part of an upgraded package for the Camry LE and Camry SE, and as standard on four other editions,” said Mark Smith, General Sales Manager at Sunrise Toyota. “This, plus other standard and optional features, add

convenience and style, and make the Camry a better value than ever.” All 2011 Toyota Camry models can accommodate up to five passengers and 15 cubic feet of cargo. The Camry’s front wheel drive configuration enhanced with Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control deliver driving confidence, making the Camry the perfect midsize family sedan.

As long as you’re being practical, then why not invest a few extra dollars for the Camry with a hybrid drive that offers a combined highway/city rating of 50 miles to the gallon, and gives you around 1140 kilometers between visits to the gas station?

Spectators at the airshow will not only have the chance to watch the planes perform overhead, but enjoy the static displays.

Abbotsford News

The Snowbirds are an Abbotsford Airshow crowd favourite and will be returning again for this year’s show.

A diverse Abbotsford Airshow The 49th annual event will feature everything from warbirds to a jet-powered school bus

P

repare your eyes and ears for amazement as the 49th annual Abbotsford International Airshow lands at the Abbotsford Airport this weekend. As always, the entertainment will thrill families and aviation enthusiasts alike. A number of well-known planes will be returning to the skies, as will popular static displays and demonstrations. Special this year, the Canadian Forces SkyHawks will be celebrating its 40th anniversary, and the Supermarine Spitfire will be celebrating its 75th anniversary. In the air As the show gears up for its 49th year, the air performances will follow the same routine as in the past, featuring military planes, warbirds and civilian aircrafts. Canada’s military aerobatic team, the Snowbirds, will be returning to Abbotsford skies for performances on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The team consists of nine Canadian designed and built CT-114 Tutors. A CF-18 Hornet TAC demo will be flown by 409 Squadron for the first time this year. 409 Squadron has a rich history at the Abbotsford Airshow having performed for many years in the ’70s and ’80s in their CF-101 Voodoos.

The A-10 Thunderbolt II will be taking over the skies this year at the show as well. It is the first Air Force aircraft specially designed for close air support of ground forces. Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the Canadian Forces Parachute Team, the SkyHawks will be demonstrating a signature canopy relative work parachute performance. Meantime, the C-17 Globemaster, which is one of the latest planes in the Canadian Air Forces inventory, will also be flying. The warbirds taking to the sky will include the T-6 Texan which is painted in the colours of the RCAF Golden Hawks, and Discovery Air Hawk One, which is an F-86 Sabre also painted in the colours of the famed Golden Hawks aerobatic team. In addition, the Supermarine Spitfire will return to Abbotsford after a long absence from the airshow, celebrating its 75th anniversary. The civilian aircrafts at this year’s show will include the T-34 Mentor flown by Julie Clark, the MX2 Aerobatic Aircraft flown by Rob Holland, and a comedy act in an 1942 Interstate Cadet flown by Kent Pietsch. Another civilian act will be the Indy Boys. An Abbotsford first, they will present a jet-powered school bus that can run up to 580 km/h.

This British-built, single-seat Äghter plane was a common sight in the Royal Air Force and other Allied countries during the war years. It was originally put together as a short-range, high-performance interceptor, and its main role was to shoot down incoming German bombers. Bob Singleton and Roy Hafeli will once again team up to announce this year’s Abbotsford Airshow. In addition, Ken Hildebrant will also be returning to take to the microphone. Singleton has announced at the Abbotsford International Airshow for 41 of its 48 years. Initially, he was assistant to Abbotsford’s first announcer Toby Trowbridge. He became Abbotsford’s primary announcer in 1977. Meanwhile, Hafeli is an on-air radio personality who has always been an avid reader of aviation books. He’s also built countless model airplanes, some of which survive to this day. Roy made his first solo flight when he was just 16, and a year later he earned his private pilots licence. Hildebrandt, director of Gallery 7, is the newest voice at the show. He started his announcing career in 2007 under the guidance of Singleton and Hafeli. Hildebrant has also teamed up with Hafeli to create Hafeli and Hildebrandt Air Show Announcing, Canada’s only two man air show announcing team.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Canadian Forces Parachute Team, the SkyHawks. Over the years, the group has proudly represented Canada, showcasing the professionalism, dedication and teamwork it takes to be a part of the Canadian Forces. Across North America, the SkyHawks will be performing at over 30 shows in 2011, showcasing their thrilling and exciting act of parachute Canopy Relative Work. Since its inception, the group has had many changes. The most notable change took place in 1977 when the team traded the Para-Commander round parachute for the more manoeuvrable Ram-Air square parachute. This advance in team equipment allowed for more dynamic and crowd-pleasing performances. Canopy formations has been a major portion of demonstrations since the 1989 season. But one part of the team that hasn’t changed is the signature of the SkyHawks: the Canadian Flag parachute. The team has also achieved a number of successes, including the world’s most northerly demonstration jump at Canadian Forces Station Alert on the northern tip of Ellesmere Island on Sept. 19, 1982. At the Abbotsford Airshow, fans can expect a colourful and exciting performance. For more information, visit www.skyhawks.forces.gc.ca.
