An Abbotsford teen was clinging to life yesterday after having his head bashed with a baseball bat on Saturday. The 17-year-old, whose name has not been released, was in critical condition and “really struggling,” said Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald. The attack stemmed from a situation at a house where a private function was being held for students of Mennonite Educational Institute (MEI) Secondary and VIDLEIONE invited guests. ON ws.com Ernie Janzen, superintendent abbyne of MEI private schools, confirmed in a written statement “... uninvited individuals arrived and an altercation occurred which some time later moved into the community, culminating in our student being injured.” He said the school was “deeply saddened” and “the entire MEI community is concerned for his recovery and is praying for his well-being.” MacDonald said six or seven uninvited people arrived just after midnight to the home on Sumas Prairie. They were wearing hoodies and/or masks, and deployed bear spray. By the time police arrived, most of the partygoers had left, but a few guests were suffering the effects of the bear spray and were treated Continued on A4

Drug trial will continue in January

Jarrod Bacon will be on trial for conspiracy to traffic in cocaine next month.

The trial for Jarrod Bacon of Abbotsford and co-accused Wayne Scott will continue next month, after a Supreme Court justice denied their applications to have their charges stayed. Lawyers for the pair argued in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver that their charter rights had been violated, and wiretap evidence gathered during a drug investigation should be thrown out. Justice Austin Cullen did not agree, and ruled yesterday that the trial will continue. It is scheduled to pick up again on Jan. 9. The trial began in early October. Bacon and Scott are each charged with one count of conspiracy to traffic in cocaine. They were arrested in Abbotsford in November 2009 following an undercover investigation by the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit that targeted members of the Red Scorpions and UN gangs. At the time, police said Bacon was a high-

ranking member of the Red Scorpions. Scott is the father of Bacon’s girlfriend, with whom he has a young child. Crucial to the Crown’s case is wiretap evidence that was collected by an undercover agent, who can only be identified by the initials “G.L.” G.L. previously testified that he was making arrangements with Scott, whom he had known for 10 years, and Bacon for the transportation of up to 100 kilograms of cocaine from Mexico. On wiretap evidence played in court, Bacon agreed to pay $30,000 for the first 10 kg of product, with plans to purchase another 10 kg a day until the supply was gone. The undercover investigation came to a close after a warehouse meeting between G.L. and Bacon never transpired due to a large police presence responding to reports of a break-in on the property. Bacon remains in prison, while Scott is out on bail.

A fundraiser to help a couple struggling with their baby daughter’s serious illness raised more than $5,000 over the weekend in Abbotsford. Most of those funds – about $3,500 – were from a bottle drive held Saturday by Regional Recycling. The remainder is from an account open at the company’s five locations, where the public can donate the proceeds from their recyclables. All the money is going to support Chilliwack’s Andrew Putt and Chelsey Whittle, who are unable to work while their one-year-old daughter, LileeJean, undergoes treatment for aggressive brain cancer. Whittle’s friend, Candace Martyn of Abbotsford, has been among those collecting bottles. Regional Recycling stepped in after it was reported that about $300 worth of bottles had been stolen from Martyn’s property on Nov. 15. The company organized a community-wide bottle drive, held in the parking lot of the Abbotsford News.

homeless men donated their collection of bottles. “That brought tears to people’s eyes,” she said. Paul Mellis, general manager of Regional Recycling, said the event ranks among the largest bottle drives the company has ever participated in. He said a typical drive for an established organization can raise about $1,000. Cash donations were also collected during the event, but those funds have not yet been totalled, Martyn said. Recyclables can be dropped off at any Regional Recycling depot (Abbotsford, Surrey, Richmond, Vancouver and Whistler). The public can ask for the proceeds to be deposited into the “Love for Lilee” account. The Abbotsford location is at 750 Riverside Rd. LILEE-JEAN WHITTLE-PUTT http://loveforlilee.com/fundraisers/ or visit the “Love For Lilee” page on Facebook. Meanwhile, a song called Pray (for LJ), written on Lilee-Jean’s behalf, is generating funds for BC Children’s Hospital, where she is receiving chemotherapy treatment. The song was recorded by the band Pardon My Striptease (PMS), in which Putt is the lead singer. It hit the number one spot on iTunes last Friday, knocking Nickelback’s new single, When We Stand Together, from the position. PMS challenged Nickelback to match the funds being raised. In response, the stadium rockers upped the ante by announcing a $50,000 donation to Children’s Hospital. “The support from our community ... has been second to none,” Whittle told Black Press. “The people have rallied around a baby they don’t know, and a family they know a little. It really rekindles our faith in mankind.” – with files from Jennifer Feinberg, Chilliwack Progress

drawing the most donations in the city ever since. Even if she wasn’t wearing her distinct holiday attire, Nielsen’s presence would be hard to miss. She spends each day collecting donations at the mall from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and doesn’t even take a break for lunch or dinner. Instead, she opts to bring packed meals and eat them while she’s ring-

ing the bell. Nielsen doesn’t agree with any suggestions that 14-hour days must make for an exhausting schedule. “I would rather be working [long days] because I like to be on the move. I don’t like sitting around,” she says. Her resolve to keep active has only increased since her doctor told her it’s just a matter of time before a resurgence

of polio forces her into using a scooter to get around. To her, volunteering for the red kettle campaign is the perfect way to maintain an active lifestyle and keep up her strength. Whenever people ask Nielsen if she’ll be back for another holiday season, she has the same response each time: “I’m going to try to come for another 10 years.”

Rules meant to protect people working at night in British Columbia have been changed to allow gas station and convenience store clerks to work alone, without barriers. WorkSafeBC announced amendments to Grant’s Law on Thursday, finding it wasn’t “practicable,” or feasible, for retailers to hire additional workers or erect protective barriers. Convenience stores can follow other safety procedures, including time-lock safes that can’t be opened during late night hours, video surveillance, as well as keeping limited amounts of cash and lottery tickets at hand. In addition, employers will be required to do regular security audits to confirm that all the controls have been implemented. “Our priority continues to be protecting late night retail workers from acts of violence,” said Roberta Ellis, senior vice-president of corporate affairs for WorkSafeBC, in a press release announcing the amendment.

The B.C. Federation of Labour also criticized the changes. “It is extremely disappointing to see WorkSafeBC sacrifice evidence-based safety regulations after a lobby based only on the profit motive of late-night employers,” said president Jim Sinclair. But the Western Convenience Store Association, which lobbied for the change, believes money can now be saved and, in turn, spent on better security. “It sets a standard for late-night retailers and provides them with an opportunity for them to have someone do a security audit at their store to ensure it has a good, safe environment for their customers and employees to enjoy,” said association chair Len McGeouch. McGeouch noted that experts have found that having more than one person on staff doesn’t stop criminals from committing robbery. “If there is a predisposition to committing a criminal act, having one, two or three people won’t stop a person from doing it,” he added.

A critical by-election The run up to a by-election can shift a riding’s political topography. On Dec. 3 in Chilliwack we discovered just how much. Diane Janzen, the only declared candidate seeking the Liberal nomination in the Chilliwack-Hope riding, walked away, saying her earlier effort to run as a federal Liberal had become “a distraction.” Clearly the stakes are high in the coming by-election, and the BC Liberals are not about to risk seeing any conservative support bleed away to the BC Conservatives. The two parties have been goading each other for days, with Liberals questioning party leader John Cummins’ decision not to run in the riding, and Cummins saying Janzen’s decision to step aside is evidence candidates were “abandoning” the BC Liberals. The NDP must be smiling. They have the most to gain from a hotly contested battle between the

Liberals and Conservatives. A split vote on the right opens an avenue to Victoria they might not otherwise enjoy. The BC Liberals know this. They neither want a divisive nomination process that further fractures their support base, nor a candidate lacking the proper small “c” conservative credentials. Whether Janzen’s conservative pedigree was insufficient to fend off an even more conservative attack, we’ll never know. But certainly her association with the federal Liberal Party and her challenge of Mark Strahl in the last federal election made her vulnerable. By-elections are curious animals in the world of politics. Rather than a contest fought in the shadows of a larger campaign, they sit in the full glare of public – and political – attention. Rather than one race among many, this is the race. With stakes that high, it’s not surprising party officials are less willing to take chances. – Black Press

The ‘tie’ that binds local politics together Mark

Rushton On the

Other Hand On these brilliant but rare days of winter the magnificence of Mount Baker is an awe-inspiring vista, but while we own the view, we don’t own the mountain. On the other hand, the multi-faceted crags of the peaks north of Mission are ours, and clad in snow, are equally commanding of wonder at their beauty. Driving north along the Mission Highway across Matsqui Prairie, those rocky spires are postcard-perfect, capturing both your attention and your vision. But while the mountains dominate, few actually ponder the pastoral fields and flats of Matsqui Prairie, and realize that this little flood plain has had, over the years, an enormous impact on the growth and vision of not only our city, but our province and even our nation. For when you think about the

Prairie’s historical contribution you remember that the last mayor of Matsqui – Dave Kandal – actually came from Matsqui Village, and the mayor before him – Harry De Jong – farmed just north of the village. And ‘Abbotsford’s’ first MLA was Bill Ritchie, who operated a feed mill on the prairie’s southern verge and lived on the ridge overlooking the flats. Ritchie was our first MLA because up to then, our community was coupled with Chilliwack and had, until that time, been represented by a resident of that town. But growth in the 1960s was such that Abbotsford finally outgrew Chilliwack and by the 1970s earned its own MLA, a position won by Ritchie. Bill served until 1986 when, again due to growth, our community then earned two MLAs, one of whom was Mayor Harry de Jong. Peter Dueck, who lived just south of the prairie joined Harry in Victoria. Their service lasted through the early 1990s when, following resignations, young lawyer, school trustee and prairie dweller Michael de Jong won a byelection in 1994. He was followed in 1995 by farmer neighbour John van Dongen.

Then, when the inevitable rise in population caused us to have the representation of three MLAs, de Jong and van Dongen were joined by Mission resident Randy Hawes, whose riding now includes Matsqui Prairie. And although we have never, at least in my memory, had a Member of Parliament spring from the fertile fields of

No area as tiny as Matsqui has spawned so many successful politicians. Matsqui, I know the current one has a tenuous relationship to the village at its centre. Two federal elections ago (and since there seemed to be a federal election every other year in the last half dozen years) I had, for reasons that baffled not only me, to vote at the poll in Matsqui Community Hall. Why someone who

lives in the middle of Sumas Mountain had to drive all the way into Matsqui, travelling past at least three other federal polling stations was a mystery to me, and an anomaly that could only be explained by the strange workings of Elections Canada. However, as I was casting my ballot in Matsqui Hall, who was there doing the same thing but MP Ed Fast. In a quick conversation he, who lives in the urban area of Abbotsford, was as mystified as I as to why both or either of us should be voting at that station. But perhaps it was fate that the electorally successful spell of Matsqui Prairie worked for him as well. So, when driving across the flats of Matsqui, know that the remarkable vistas of mountains actually look down upon a political landscape that has an unusual significance on how our governance has been created over the decades. I would suggest that there is no other area, especially one as tiny as it is, that has spawned so many successful politicians anywhere in Canada. Only time will tell if the trend continues. markrushton@abbynews.com

Yesterday, a woman I know very well came up to me. As she approached, I kindly pointed out that she’d forgotten to remove the sticker-tag on her sweater. Learn the language of the country In response to Shawna Zurowski, Language opportunity, Dec. 6, I would just like to say there is no “deeper, underlying issue” here. I do not have a problem with stating my point of view. My “underlying issue” is disrespect, and it appears to me that people all over the world are becoming more and more disrespectful toward each other. I don’t care if you are black, green, orange, or filled with purple polka dots, if you immigrate to another country, no matter which country in the world that may be, the first obligation of an immigrant is to learn the language so they can communicate with the general population. That includes ambulance drivers, fire department personnel, police officers etc. I, as an immigrant/ Canadian citizen, am so grateful for living in this wonderful democratic country where we are allowed to voice our opinions free from fear of retaliation by anyone, and if nothing else we can, at least, agree to disagree.

Offender programs fall short: auditor Tom FLETCHER Black Press

The B.C. government is struggling to deal with a record caseload of nearly 24,000 convicted offenders who are in

the community, and it needs to do a better job of delivering programs to prevent them from reoffending. Those are key conclusions of B.C.

Auditor General John Doyle’s latest report on the provincial corrections system. In addition to overcrowding in B.C. jails, nearly nine out of 10 convicted offenders

in B.C. are not in custody, but are serving conditional sentences on house arrest or probation with courtimposed conditions. The auditor found that additional staff have not kept up with the caseload, which increased 28 per cent in the past six years. And only 35 per cent of interventions that are designed to reduce re-offending are ever completed. B.C. has four core programs. They focus on male offenders of spousal assault, other violent offenders, sex offenders and substance abusers. Doyle made eight r e c o m m e n d a t i o n s, related to improved reporting on rates of re-offence and better record-keeping. He recommended a review of staffing levels but didn’t prescribe what if any increase there should be to the current staff of 450 probation officers. The B.C. public safety ministry accepted all eight recommendations. In its response to the report, the community corrections division noted that probation officers deal with adult offenders, “many of

of of offences in B.C. after impaired driving. But Corrigan noted that Doyle found fewer than half of B.C.’s probation officers have completed the ministry’s domestic violence course. Doyle surveyed a sample of 58 domestic violence case files, and found three quarters of them contained at least one alleged breach of court-imposed conditions. He said few of the cases were

documented well enough to determine if breaches of probation were dealt with in court, but there were several cases where they were not. The report identified three cases where “the unreported breaches involved victim contact from offenders convicted of domestic violence – and in all three cases, the offender had been assessed as being at either a medium or high risk to re-offend.”

A year to build on: AESC sees more entertainment Kevin MILLS

company that runs the AESC on behalf of the City of Abbotsford. It’s been a busy year, and Blumenfeld said he’s encouraged by how things have gone. He had heard about the financial concerns surrounding the new arena – it ran a deficit of $2.6 million in its first year and $3.4 million in 2010 – but there was little he could do about the past. “Our goal is to reduce the deficit, bring more revenue to the city ... when you don’t have the amount of shows you want, then you have to make sure your expenses are lower.” While Blumenfeld would not project what 2011’s financial numbers would look like, he did say the figures (which are normally released in July) will show the arena is going in the right direction. In 2011 the AESC had approximately 50 nonhockey related events. In 2010, the non-hockey events were in the “30 range.” The first act booked under his regime was Larry the Cable Guy,

Blumenfeld said he tries to attract “something for everyone,” and recent shows have included country, Christian, pop, hard rock and South Asian. Acts on the horizon include ventriloquist Jeff Dunham, Lord of the Dance, TransSiberian Orchestra, Motorcycle Mania, the return of Cirque du Soleil, and some “A-listers” in the works

that he can’t discuss. “There’s a lot more opportunity here to book shows, but at the same time there’s a lot more competition here.” He noted that Langley and Chilliwack both have arenas, and there are casinos that all vie for travelling shows. One thing about the area that has surprised Blumenfeld is the “separation” between Abbotsford and Vancouver. “Even though it is the

same media market, so to speak, it’s kind of its own separate area ... there is a disconnect between the two areas, so we try to bridge that gap.” As for the Abbotsford Heat AHL hockey club, Blumenfeld believes the team will continue to grow its audience. “I’m not the Heat and the Heat are not us. But we represent each other ... the more people into the games, the more free marketing for our shows and vice versa.”

ICBC under scrutiny

Salaries and expenses spur calls for review Tricia LESLIE Black Press

In the wake of news highlighting hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on certain ICBC salaries and expenses, more than one person is calling for a closer look at the Crown corporation. The latest news reports come on the heels of ICBC applying to the B.C. Utilities Commission (BCUC) for a rate hike that would see most motorists pay about $30 more in premiums next year. Basic premiums will rise by 11.2 per cent and optional premiums will be about six per cent lower if the

BCUC approves. ICBC president and CEO Jon Schubert said the increase is needed because of climbing claims costs, which rose $200 million in the first nine months of 2011. Bodily injury costs, which will hit $1.7 billion this year, are up $350 million from five years ago. But ICBC financial statements show Art Kirkner, a U.S. citizen hired as one of ICBC’s 15 vice-presidents in 2008 to help cut costs, received more than $188,000 for expenses claimed in 2010 – in addition to his $315,000 annual salary. In 2010, Kirkner’s salary and expenses totalled

$504,505, the secondhighest salary in the Crown corporation after Schubert, who pulled in $504,771. Kirkner left ICBC in July and received 12 months severance pay. In reaction, Minister for Public Safety and Solicitor General Shirley Bond said she has asked for a review into ICBC, which will start sometime in the new year. said the Crown corporation needs closer scrutiny. “I think we need an inquiry into what’s happening at ICBC,” he said. “I have great respect for the people who work there, but they overcharge for the cost of insurance and have been for years.” He doesn’t agree with Victoria taking millions from ICBC every year in dividends – $580 million for 2010-2011 alone. – with CBC News files

Abbotsford News

When your child starts singing full sentences of Reba McEntire’s music at nine months, you know something is there. That’s what Stacey McKitrick’s parents thought when the youngster belted out the twangy tunes, said the singer. Fast forward nearly 26 years, and McKitrick now has an album to her name on which those hearty vocals take centre stage. The lyrics on her debut self-titled CD point to her journey in life, love and ambitions. There are some honky-tonk songs such as “Loved by You,” while others near the country-pop genre with “My Own Thing,” and country-rock with “Blame it on the Drinking.” While some ballads celebrate saying

She has since gone on to work with big names, Chad Kroeger from Nickelback and songwriter/producer/engineer Kevin Churko. farewell to lovers, McKitrick said that she never considered saying goodbye to her love of music. “In the past, people have said maybe it’s time to think about doing something else. But it’s something that I was destined to do.” Performing publicly since the age of nine, at Abbotsford’s annual Agrifair, McKitrick then started looking through the newspaper every weekend to see if there was an event she could sing at. Many of them involved charities, and the theme has stuck. Recently, McKitrick busked in front of the Save-On-Foods, for the Basics for Babies fundraiser sponsored by JRFM,

and this past Friday, the singer was at a food drive for the local food bank at Aggasiz’s Leisure Centre. “It’s my favourite thing to do (fundraising events), especially at this time of year. If you are fortunate enough to be in a position where you can give back, then you should.” Other upcoming performances include singing the national anthem at the Abbotsford Heat game on Dec. 17 and at one of the Canucks games in January. A date has not yet been set. In addition, McKitrick has just been made the face of HevyD’s Kettle Korn, produced in Vernon and sold throughout the Save-On-Foods chain.

She recalls a funny moment on set, during the promotional shoot, the pictures of which will be on the back of every package. “These guys were pouring popcorn over my head, to make it look like it was snowing,” she said laughing. While McKitrick is overjoyed with the publicity the campaign will generate, she stated that she is determined to become successful in the music industry the old-fashioned way – hard work. “If you want something, and work hard enough, you can make things happen.” To find out more information, visit www.staceymckitrick.com/.

Author releases new book In the jungle with Theresa Chevalier Melissa WELSH Abbotsford News

Having lived in South America until the age of seven, Theresa Chevalier, 47, recounts memories of walking through jungles with her father and hunting for berries. Those flashbacks helped her create an exotic backdrop for her second novel, “Green Hell,” the story of which is based in Gran Chaco (the hunting land), a central area in South America between countries Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay. Escaping communist Russia in the 1930s, a family then travels to South America. Battling alongside the Paraguayans, Bolivians, Native Indians and Mennonites to claim the Gran Chaco, the family meets more conflict when they discover a mystical evil present in the jungle. Based on real events, Chevalier stated that she has binders of research. In her book, she tries to portray the thoughts and feelings of the four different cultures and the war that ensued in that area. “My books are the perfect blend of fiction and non-fiction. The characters, I make up, but what they go through is very real. “Learning about all the different customs and their way of life is a very rewarding experience for me and from what my reading audience tells me, they appreciate when it’s brought to them in a story format.” Her first book, “Shameful Innocence,” took place in Russia during WWII. It has since been translated into German, Chevalier’s first language. The book took seven years to write at the time because her children were younger. Now that they are all grown up, Chevalier says

Third-period explosions power Pilots Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News

Battered and bruised though they may be, the Abbotsford Pilots took care of business at home on the weekend. The local junior B club didn’t have a full complement of skaters available for either of their games at MSA Arena, but they rode huge third-period explosions to a pair a victories – 6-3 over the Mission Icebreakers on Friday, and 5-3 over the Ridge Meadows Flames on Saturday. The Pilots (16-7-1-0) were heavily favoured in both games – Mission and Ridge Meadows have just seven wins between them, less than half of Abbotsford’s total. But both nights, the out-

have (for the first two periods). We just didn’t have the urgency to push back. Then in both third periods, we were all over them. Part of the Pilots’ early struggles could be attributed to a relentless run of injuries. On S a t u r d a y, for instance, they were missing Kevin Lourens (broken jaw), Brandon Daase (knee), Brett Kolins (shoulder), Terrence Limbert (flu) and Luke Venema (flu). Additionally, Ryan Stewart was unavailable due to work commitments, and Riley Lamb departed after suffer-

come was in doubt until the final frame. On Friday, the Icebreakers took a 3-2 lead into the third, but the Pilots rallied for four goals courtesy of Chris Vinette (2), Brad Parker and Adam Rossi. On Saturday, Abbotsford held a slim 2-1 lead over the Flames, before breaking the game open on goals from Vinette, Parker and Brady Lawlor early in the third. “Those teams can beat anyone on a given night if you take them too lightly, Pilots coach Jim Cowden said. “We didn’t play as well as we could

ing a concussion in the first period. “When it rains, it pours, Cowden noted. “In the new year, it’ll be like Christmas all over again, because we’ll get everybody back. With 33 points, the Pilots are just one point back of the Aldergrove Kodiaks for first place in the Harold Brittain Conference. They have a chance to overtake the Kodiaks on Wednesday, when they face off at Aldergrove Community Arena (7:15 p.m. start). On Saturday, the Pilots visit the Port Moody Black Panthers (Port Moody Arena, 7:45 p.m.), and their next home game is Friday, Dec. 23 against Aldergrove (MSA Arena, 7:30 p.m.).

Home sweep home for Heat

Abbotsford Police City Tournament showcases thriving basketball scene Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News

The Abbotsford Police City Basketball Tournament was a sprawling event when it tipped off last Wednesday, with 54 teams and more than 750 players battling for local bragging rights. By the time the drama of Championship Saturday had played out at Columbia Bible College, six teams could call themselves city champs in their respective divisions. SENIOR BOYS: Mouat 83, Yale 60 Watching Tristan Etienne dictate play in the paint at both ends of the floor on Saturday evening, it was hard to imagine that just two weeks ago, the W.J. Mouat Hawks’ Grade 10 phenom was sincerely worried about his cardiac health. The 6’9” centre, regarded as one of Canada’s best players in his age group, was sidelined during the opening week of the high school hoops season due to concerns about an irregular heartbeat. But after undergoing a battery of tests, he was given a clean bill of health, and his play was

pivotal in the Hawks’ win over the Yale Lions. “It was scary, but everything turned out,” Etienne said with a grin afterward. “All the tests showed up good, so I’m allowed to play full-out.” Etienne’s stats – 11 points, nine rebounds, three blocks – hinted at his impact, but his immense influence on the defensive end was harder to quantify. “In the second half, he changed a lot of shots,” Mouat coach Rich Ralston observed. “Yale’s very good off the dribble, and our guys were having a hard time keeping them out of the lane. But when you’ve got size like that around the basket, it really helps.” Yale led 28-25 at halftime, but midway through the third quarter, Mouat took control with a 21-3 run. Mouat’s Jesse Coy finished with a game-high 25 points, while Daniel Pawliuk notched 22 points and 11 rebounds. The Lions’ own youthful phenom – Grade 9 guard Jauquin Bennett-Boire – tied J.J. Pankratz for team-high scoring honours with 17 points. Continued on A34

The Abbotsford Heat’s record suggested they were a very good team, but local fans hadn’t seen much first-hand evidence of that until this past weekend. Heading into a FridaySaturday set with the Lake Erie Monsters, the bulk of the Heat’s success had come on the road, where they’d posted a stellar 14-3-0-0 record. At the not-so-friendly confines of the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre, they were just 2-5-1-0. But hot on the heels of Friday’s 2-0 win, the Heat TAYLOR posted a 3-1 victory on Saturday. It marked their first sweep of a two-game home set this season, and extended their win streak to five games overall. “It was great for the guys, emotionally,” Heat head coach Troy Ward said. “They felt good about the fact they played hard enough and consistent enough to get four points at home. I think that will go a long way to build momentum.” If Heat fans were concerned with the state of the team’s goaltending after workhorse starter Leland Irving was recalled by the Calgary Flames Continued on A34

earlier in the week, newcomer Danny Taylor calmed those fears in a big way. Taylor, signed by the Heat on Dec. 2, posted a 38-save shutout on Friday, and turned aside 24 of 25 shots in Saturday’s win. “The word I’d use to sum up Danny is consistent,” Ward said. “You felt like he was in control back there – you didn’t feel like he was squirming all over the place.” Krys Kolanos and Dustin Sylvester scored the Heat goals on Friday, and Brett Carson, Lance Bouma and Sylvester tallied Saturday as Abbotsford improved to 18-8-1-0 on the season. With 37 points, the Heat are third overall in the AHL, but the two teams ahead of them – the

Oklahoma City Barons (39 points) and the Houston Aeros (38) – also happen to reside in the West Division with Abbotsford. ICE CHIPS: Q The Heat saw a flurry of player movement last week. Rookie centre Roman Horak was sent down to Abbotsford by the Calgary Flames on Friday, but he was recalled on Sunday, along with blueliner Carson, who was on a two-week conditioning stint. Greg Nemisz was summoned by the Flames on Saturday morning and suited up against the Edmonton Oilers that evening. After Calgary’s 3-0 win, Nemisz was sent back to the Heat. Q The Heat host the Hamilton Bulldogs this Friday (7 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.) at the AESC.

Chris Robertson and Cosmos Brass Friday, October 14, 2011

SENIOR GIRLS: Yale 68, Mouat 47 The senior girls final represented a changing of the guard. For years now, Yale has run second locally to perennial powerhouse W.J. Mouat. Lions head coach Euan Roberts, in his three seasons at the helm, hadn’t tasted victory over the Hawks. That all changed Saturday. “It’s not the same Mouat team that put a whooping on us,” Roberts noted with a chuckle, alluding to the fact that five grads from last year’s Mouat squad that won the B.C. AAA title are currently playing post-secondary basketball. “But it’s nice to beat them any time, really. They’re a good program with good players.” Yale took a 27-20 lead into halftime, then reeled off a 17-2 run to open the third quarter. Jessica Collins racked up a game-high 20 points, while Hailey Kendall (13 points) and Chantel Ewert (10) also scored in double figures for Yale. Carmelle M’Bikata notched 15 points for Mouat. JUNIOR BOYS: Yale 54, MEI 44 The Yale Lions’ impressive array of perimeter talent was too much for the MEI

Eagles, as they raced out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter en route to victory. “We don’t really have a traditional big guy who sits down low and grabs rebounds and puts the ball back in for us,” noted Lions coach Adam Friesen. “But we have a lot of kids who can dribble and shoot, and a number of them have great quickness to go along with that. When we’re hitting shots, we’re tough to guard.” Jassie Gill spear-

headed the Lions’ attack, knocking down six three-pointers on his way to a game-high 22 points. Yale’s Sasha Otanga chipped in with 14 points, while MEI’s Tony Hao scored 15. Things might have turned out better for the Eagles if they hadn’t spotted the Lions an early 15-3 lead. MEI actually out-scored Yale by two points for the rest of the game, but were unable to overcome the early deficit. JUNIOR GIRLS: MEI 62, Yale 54 Basketball is a contact sport, and MEI’s Taylor Claggett wouldn’t have it any other way. The Yale Lions simply had no answer for the Eagles’ rugged Grade 9 centre in the junior girls final – Claggett shot an astounding 24 foul shots, making half of them in her team’s 62-54 win. She led all scorers with 26 points. “She embraces contact,” Eagles coach Samantha Hill said of the 5’10” Claggett. “She’s a water polo player, so she’s strong and fit, and she loves getting dirty down there.” MEI had a lot of offensive success in the paint, courtesy of Claggett and Tessa Ratzlaf (13 points), and point guard Grace Tadrous did a good job pushing the ball in transition. Yale got a big game from Taylor Lundrigan, who scored 21 points on a variety of gritty drives to the hoop. GRADE 8 BOYS: Fraser 46, Chief Dan George 27 In Grade 8 basketball,

equal playing time is mandated for the first three quarters of the game. The upshot is, teams make hockeystyle line changes, with full five-man units subbing in every four minutes. Given those guidelines, W.A. Fraser Falcons head coach Bobby Braich has a rare luxury – two terrific point guards to run the offence for each of his two lines. Floor generals Riley Braich – the coach’s son – and Matthew KercMurchison sparked the Falcons to a decisive 46-27 win over the Chief Dan George Wolves. The younger Braich poured in a gamehigh 13 points. KercMurchison registered just two points, but his heady play earned him player of the game honours. “We have two balanced lines and two very good point guards, so we can control the tempo,” Bobby Braich noted. “A lot of other teams don’t have that much depth.” The Falcons’ Matt Fraser chipped in with 12 points, while Merrick Paq-Man (seven points) and Payton Gibson (six) paced the Chief Dan offence. Joel Klammer was the Wolves’ player of the game. GRADE 8 GIRLS: Fraser 44, Howe 24 For head coach Chris Harvey and the Grade 8 girls basketball team from Fraser Middle School, familiarity breeds success. Harvey has worked with this group of girls for the past three seasons, dating back to when the players were in Grade 6. That comfort level shone through in the city final – the Falcons raced out to a 20-point lead in the first half over the Howe Bulldogs, and they cruised from there. “We really came into this season a few steps ahead,” Harvey said. “They know what I want, and they hit the ground running. It’s up to us now to keep working hard to stay ahead of the rest.” Fraser teammates Jade Bird and Gabrielle Moore scored nine points apiece, while Mikayla Gravelle picked up player of the game honours. Tianna Sarra and Gurbeen Toor, with six points each, paced the Bulldogs, while Anna Hadzovic was Howe’s player of the game.

REMPEL Mary With saddened hearts we announce that Mary Rempel passed away on December 9th, 2011, with her children Barbara and Robert and her daughter-in-law Jeannie by her side, and with the loving support of the hospital staff. Mary left our earthly home to meet with her loving husband Dan. Mary and Dan shared a wonderful marriage of 66 years, and we find comfort in knowing they can now share an eternity together in the presence of our Lord. Mary was a feisty and active woman, who blessed not only the lives of her husband and children, but also her community. Mary Rempel was born on 22nd Sep 31 in Beausejour Manitoba to Marie and Henry Reimer. Mary, one of 9 children, was predeceased by her husband Dan, her brother Conway, and her sisters Betty and Sarah. She is survived by her daughter Barbara Pashalis and husband Yiannis of Greece and her son Robert Rempel and wife Jeannie of Thunder Bay, her grandchildren Giorgos, Danny, Steve, Carrie Moore (Steve’s wife to be), Katrina and Jessica, her brothers Henry and Alvin, and her sisters Adina Klippenstein and Margaret Reimer. Following a life committed to the Lord, Mary helped not only in the church but also in the community with her good deeds. Having a lovely voice she sang in the church choir, not to mention that she aided the poor by working in soup kitchens, visited the sick and took an active interest in many organizations like the Fraser Valley and Langley Naturalists. In 1986, after having completed Grade 12 and returning to College, Mary graduated from Douglas College with a Certificate in Office Administration-Legal Secretarial Specialty. They started travelling both to see their son in Eastern Canada and their daughter in Greece. But on 31st October 2007, her husband Dan passed away and at this point there was a gradual decline in Mary’s health until, she, too, passed away on 09th Dec 2011. A viewing will take place at Woodlawn Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 14th, 2011 7-9 pm. Interment: Hazelwood Cemetery 11:00 am on Thursday, December 15th, 2011 followed by A Celebration of Life at 1:00 PM at Sevenoaks Alliance Church, 2575 Gladwin Road, Abbotsford, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice. Woodlawn Funeral Home (604) 853-2643
