hances are good you’ve driven past it without knowing it was there. Perhaps you don’t even know it exists. Ann Donkers wants to change that. Nestled in the hills just out of view of Highway 1, the BC Teen Challenge Abbotsford Women’s Centre is a safe haven for women from around the country looking to overcome addictions in a faithbased environment. When it opened in 2003, B.C. Teen Challenge was the first women’s centre of its kind in Canada. The 54-acre wooded property is home to upwards of 10 women at any given time, each in various stages of the 12-month residential rehabilitation program. The women, all over the age of 19, come voluntarily into the Christian program looking to acknowledge their struggle with addiction. “No one has drug or alcohol addiction on their to-do list,” says Donkers, director of the Abbotsford Centre. The women live in the house for the entire year in orderly dormstyle rooms, and are expected to cook and care for the house as if it were their own. There is even a working vegetable garden, church and school room as part of the comfortably furnished family home, donated to Teen Challenge on the Continued on A4

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Those who are looking for rewarding volunteer work are encouraged to apply as a mediator and/or mentor with Abbotsford Restorative Justice & Advocacy Association. Restorative Justice aims to resolve crime outside of the traditional court system through encouraging first-time offenders to take responsibility for their actions and to make amends directly to those they have harmed—most often through a face-to-face mediated process. This program also allows for those who have been negatively affected to have direct input into how the harm will be repaired, and what amends are needed to make things right. Giving a voice through this non-adversarial process to those who have been directly affected allows for healing and closure to occur.

TRAINING FOR MEDIATORS & MENTORS WILL OCCUR FEBRUARY 2012 APPLICATION CLOSING DATE: JANUARY 15, 2012 Go to www.arjaa.org for volunteer application forms and training dates or call the office at 604-864-4857

A 17-year-old Abbotsford girl died last week after taking the drug ecstasy during a sleepover with three other girls. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said Cheryl McCormack, a Grade 12 student at Robert Bateman Secondary, took the drug at about 9 p.m on Monday, Dec. 19. At about 2:45 a.m., she became unresponsive. B.C. Ambulance Service transported the teen to hospital, where she remained in critical condition until passing away on Dec. 22. condition it be used to help women. For a $1,000 intake fee and a $500 monthly support fee, the cost of coming to terms with the toll of addiction is low. Often, families call looking to transform the life of their loved one. With more than 1,000 locations worldwide, serving between 27,000 and 30,000 people, Teen Challenge is a recognized source for addiction services. Started on the streets of New York in 1958 as a ministry to gang members and disenfranchised youth, it has grown to one of the largest and most successful addiction recovery services in the world. But Donkers says very few people know that it is available to everyone. In fact, the majority of the women staying at the Abbotsford centre are from other provinces, and not all come to the centre as Christians. Megan, a 26-year-old from Ontario in her fifth month of the Teen Challenge program, says acknowledging she had a problem was daunting at first. “It took me about a month to admit I was an alcoho-

The petite soft-spoken girl had been working on the pipelines in Alberta as a welder’s assistant, and says the pressures of the lifestyle and the drive to work hard blinded her to the fact that she had a drinking problem. At the encouragement of her brother, once a counsellor with a Teen Challenge Centre in Ontario, she finally stopped telling everyone she was fine and took a bus to the centre. Initially afraid of change, she fought the desire to go back to work, and now says she feels she is in the right place and is at rest for the

first time in years. While her favourite part of the program is now chapel, students of B.C. Teen Challenge Abbotsford experience a variety of situations meant to build confidence and change their perspective. Drugs, alcohol and smoking are left at the gate, and there are signs around the house indicating when they are allowed to drink caffeine. Among the structured daily routine of maintaining the house, the women have vocational training options, group work and solo schoolwork under the watchful eye of a team of dedicated women.

Megan could have chosen an addiction centre in her home province, but Donkers made an impression on her mother. “My mom got off the phone with Ann and said, ‘That woman loves what she does,’ ” explained Megan. The ordained minister casts a motherly eye over the entire operation, and has had just one student walk out on the program in its eight-year history. The Abbotsford facility boasts a 70 to 75 per cent recovery rate (within five years of graduating). Women who complete the program have the option to stay on a second year as senior teachers, and graduates are welcome to call or come back any time they need a refresher. At a cost of $25,000 per year for each student, B.C. Teen Challenge relies solely on the support of individuals, organizations and businesses. A men‘s Teen Challenge Centre is located in Yarrow, near for the Abbotsford border. Those struggling with addiction or looking to learn more can call B.C. Economy the key be a difficult sell, because of the current economic and, dare I say, political climate ... To say that the referendum was defeated because it was based on a private public partnership model is, I think, an over simplification. I think people saw a significant increase in debt, they saw that their property taxes would go up because of it, they saw it against the backdrop of quite an increase in debt and operating losses on the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre, and they just decided not at this time.

John van Dongen, MLA for Abbotsford South, has been serving the community since 1995. With 2011 coming to a close, the veteran politician sat down with the Abbotsford News to analyze the events of the past year, and look at the challenges in 2012. What are the major challenges facing Abbotsford in the coming year? I think the major challenges are ongoing economic sustainability. We’ve had a strong economy in Abbotsford, with agriculture as our base, the aerospace industry and a lot of varied business including construction. I think maintaining a stable economy, growing jobs, and growing some of the services for people, that includes the infrastructure needs such as the water issue that council is grappling with. I think we’ve done a pretty good job working with council in terms of recreational facilities, the trails that we’ve added – those sorts of things are important. But, I don’t think there is any substitute for a strong economy and we’ll work with everybody to maintain that. What are your views on Abbotsford’s water supply? Were you in favour of the P3 proposal?

Abbotsford News

John van Dongen, MLA for Abbotsford South, belives maintaining economic sustainability is a major challenge for Abbotsford in 2012. and there are concerns about operating deficits on those projects. So it was a whole combination of issues. There’s never one reason why a referendum fails or passes. I believe the new mayor and council will go forward and reassess all their options.

We always rely on council Will provincial funding be to provide the lead. The infraavailable for a water supply? structure needs in the community are the responsibility of I can’t say at this point wheththe mayor and council. The people of What are your thoughts on Abbotsford decided not to support that option. There can be a the city’s intention to leave the Fraser Valley Regional variety of reasons for that. The minister (Ida Chong) has made it clear that the City of Abbotsford will not be able to be its own regional district, that it will either be part of the Fraser Valley Regional District, or Metro Vancouver Regional District, or possibly some other configuration. But it is a concern for me ... I will work very closely with both parties to try and make sure we do the best for the taxpayer. But, I also believe in collaboration between neighbouring governments. What did you think of the 2011 municipal election results? Were you surprised? I was surprised about a couple of things. Certainly surprised about the mayoralty race. George Peary has provided strong leadership for this community for many years, particularly his three years as mayor. I think it was unexpected that he would be defeated by someone who is quite new to council. I believed at the outset that the referendum on water would

I think that since 2009, the decision by our government to embark on the move to join with the federal government to harmonize our sales tax system has been a long and difficult period for the government and the people of B.C. It went to referendum and the people of British Columbia decided to vote in favour of going back to the Provincial Sales Tax system. Now we as a government are in the process of implementing that system. The soft economy ... that uncertainty is translating into people’s concerns at the polls. We’ve been through quite a difficult year as a party and as a government ... we’re transitioning into a government under a new leader, through some pretty difficult times. The next election is set for May 2013. Will you run for office again? I’ve always believed you have to earn your keep as an MLA every day. I’ve always believed that I’ve had to do meaningful work for the public that I represented. And I’ve always believed that I had to have the energy and the satisfaction out of the job to continue to do it because it is a demanding job. I’ve enjoyed the privilege of representing the people for over 16 years and I still have the energy and passion for the job. I’ve been consistent in my position that I’m going to run again in the next provincial election. There are a number of my colleagues that are going to be stepping down, but I’m not one of them.

SCHOOL SUSPENSIONS DOWN Out-of-school suspensions in Abbotsford were down about six per cent in 2010-11 compared to the previous year, according to a report released by the school district. Overall, there were 805 suspensions, with the highest number (167) occurring in Grade 10, followed by Grades 9 and 11. Categories causing the most suspensions were drugs, defiance and fighting. About 20 per cent of the suspensions were referred to the Alternative to Suspension Program, a partnership with the Chilliwack RCMP based out of the Abbotsford Recreation Centre. In school-suspensions totalled 683 for the same period.

COMMUNITY MEETING The City of Abbotsford will hold a community meeting to consult with the public on a proposal to amend the City’s Official Community Plan (OCP). The amendment would change the land use designation of a portion of the property at 2663 Station Rd., from agricultural to low density residential and amend the West Abbotsford Area Plan. The change is needed to permit the development of a residential subdivision. The community meeting will be held on Jan. 10 from 6-8 p.m. at King Traditional Elementary School, 28776 King Road, Abbotsford. The public is invited to attend this meeting. The gift of time The data lines to credit card companies are humming to the tune of more than $28 billion in Canadian retail sales in December. Shoppers wearied from all that preand post-Christmas spending fill the food courts and benches. But in our frantic pursuit of Christmas gifts and Boxing Week bargains, it is easy to overlook something that won’t strain the budget Our time. Each of us has an annual time account of 8,760 hours. That’s more than half a million minutes. While a certain amount of that time must be alloted to sleeping, eating and earning a living, there’s still plenty to spare. Time to spend with family and friends. Time to help out in the community, volunteering with organizations that bring comfort and assistance to those in need or less fortunate.

Time to lend a hand on the sidelines and benches of kids sports teams, teaching young people valuable lessons of camaraderie and sportsmanship. Time to lead a troop of scouts or girl guides. Time to cook a meal or weed the garden for a lonely senior. Time to give a shelter dog a respite from its cage with a noon hour walk or to help the staff with cleaning and feeding the animals. Time to make the world a cleaner place by helping to clean a ravine or count salmon swimming upstream to spawn. Time to open a door for someone whose arms are laden with parcels. The gift of time is, well, timeless. It doesn’t require batteries or complicated instructions. Perhaps we can all keep that thought in the forefront as we enjoy the holiday season. – Black Press

Looking forward, with some trepidation, to 2012 Mark

Rushton On the

Other Hand As this is the last column before the New Year rolls over, let me offer some tradition ... that of making resolutions. Never one to indulge in such promises, though always with good intention to undertake an overlooked project, I will state now that sometime over the next 12 months, the basement will not only be cleaned up but completely renovated. Been promising to do that for the past three years since the flood. Stuff is piled on everything that remains on the floor, and the place had become a catch-all for items that need eventually to be stored away but lay in repose until that time comes. This new year will be ‘that time,’ since I’m tired of explaining to the furnace repair man and my electrician brother–in-law why they have

to fight their way through a tangle of goods that makes me look like an inveterate hoarder. It’s not that I can’t part with junk, it’s just that it’s all ‘good stuff ’ that I know one day will be useful, and thus cannot be parted with. What does need to be eliminated is the disarray in the basement, and everything stored neatly away. So while I commit the next 12 months to accomplishing that, I have other suggestions to offer, such as a steep learning curve for new mayor Bruce Banman. He faces the daunting task of six familiar faces on council who may doggedly march to the same drum that has carried them through the many previous years of administration. His challenge will be to have them recognize that there is new leadership, and that if this city is to move into the future, they better get on-side. Get that sorted out, and I wish the new mayor well. He appears to be eager, and time will tell if he is up to the job. Time will also tell if he can break

the almost decade-long tradition of one-term mayors. Mary Reeves began it, followed by a three-year return (planned I should point out) of George Ferguson, and one term for George Peary. For city staff, actually completing

On the provincial scene, winning a couple of by-elections in 2012 will be front and center for all political parties, and the end result of those may determine whether or not the ‘new’ B.C. Conservative Party has any trac-

tion, thus making the 2013 general election very interesting. Federally, of course, the next year will determine the fate of the longgun registry (goodbye!) and we may even discover where the six new and additional federal ridings will be created in B.C. Chances are most of them will be in the Lower Mainland, and likely one will be established that will involve parts of Langley and West Abbotsford. Now I realize most of the above are prognostications rather than resolutions, but to undertake a promise to oneself has to come from the person rather than the pundit. The last thing anyone needs is another to suggest a route that should be followed in their future. So I leave it up to you, and our city’s leadership, to determine your own resolves. On the other hand, I do hope that you will be as happy and successful as possible, and that any goals you seek will be both attainable and achieved. All the best for the coming year. markrushton@abbynews.com

Medical marijuana government approved madness

Years ago, the famous group The Beatles sang “Let it Be” – code words for running from our problems by smoking marijuana which they termed “Mother Mary.” Now, thanks to some people here, we can be assured of enduring indifference to any pain or anything else through “Mother Mary” – medicinal marijuana. A new brave clinic has opened its doors for “suffering patients,” who can claim a need for this marvelous miracle for self-induced Nirvana – complete

indifference to whatever is, or may be happening, to us or around us. No longer need we be concerned about anyone else objecting to the hazards of the marijuana fumes or any second-hand smoke resulting from the smoking. We should just “Let it Be.” We can be assured of a doctor’s okay to just go ahead with this perpetual indulgence. True, a doctor – on staff of the clinic, of course – will have to “approve the application” for immunity from

F-35 aircraft is a con job

I have a big problem with Canada squandering a fortune on a fighter plane we neither can afford nor need. Let’s face it, we are not capable of defending this country if the Soviets attacked, or the Chinese. And once on the ground, their armies would destroy ours in hours. Our navy is pitiful in size. America is our only hope of serious defence, which is in their interest, of course. We have had great service from our F18s, a plane well adapted to our needs, well understood by our ground crews, with no “problems,” unlike that nightmare F35. The latter plane could financially drain us, and probably kill pilots. All we really need is the Super Hornet, in numbers. Better to have more of a reliable plane, than a handful of unreliable ones which will have very costly maintenance – not to mention an outrageous end cost that is still unknown, and an unreliable delivery time. Stealthy or not, the F35 could not hide from visual sighting and destruction by an enemy. Planes make noise and can be detected by listening devices. Besides, there are satellites overhead that can spot them. They can spot your car. This F35 is madness, and a con job. End the damned contract now, pay the penalty, and order a good reliable plane which costs much less. The F35 is buying “a pig in a poke.” This purchase could cost the government the next election. I remember how Diefenbaker scrapped

the excellent and advanced Avro Arrow, technically 20 years ahead of its time, in favour of missiles from the U.S., that proved to be no good. That disaster of a prime minister had all the prototypes destroyed, the plans destroyed, and effectively destroyed Avro, putting thousands out of work. The U.S.

wanted that plane at any cost, which would have covered all the development costs, plus a lucrative contract for Canada. France wanted the engines for its Mirage. Do not make the same mistake by walking into this disaster in the making – the F35. We are not world-class players in the military game. We are a huge

nation with a small population of taxpayers maintaining it. We cannot afford this F35, and to hell with what the United Nations thinks or wants. They are useless anyway, a toothless tiger that sucks the wealth of Western nations to enrich the Third World tyrants. Drop the F35 now. Dennis Cook

interference from any neighbour, worried about the nauseous and noxious fumes drifting over from this supposed “medical procedure.” No need to fear any poisonous effects on children’s fragile constitutions either. The “good doctor” will have granted permission. Is there nothing we can do to stop this inexcusable madness – a madness actually permitted by our federal government? George Bochenek

Critics say email shows salmon inspectors’ bias Jeff NAGEL Black Press

Federal officials in charge of fish disease testing are denying they deliberately set out to quash claims that a dangerous salmon virus was detected this fall in wild Pacific stocks. T he Cohen Commission into the decline of Fraser River sockeye salmon heard new evidence Friday that critics say suggests federal agencies were willing to suppress the truth about risks to salmon to protect industry and trade. One email entered in evidence came from a B.C. manager of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), which swiftly investigated alleged findings of Infectious Salmon Anaemia (ISA) virus and then refuted those reports. Joseph Beres wrote to CFIA colleagues Nov. 9 to praise their “very successful performance” in briefing

the media on their initial findings refuting the independent tests. “It is clear that we are turning the PR tide to our favour,” Beres said in the email. “One battle is won, now we have to nail the surveillance piece, and we will win the war also.” Dr. Kim Klotins, the acting national manager of disease control contingency planning at the CFIA, said staff can get “a little bit exuberant” in internal emails. “I really can’t speak to what he was thinking,” she said under cross-examination. “My read is there is not a particular viewpoint that we’re following,” Klotins told the commission. “The point of surveillance is to find out if if is there or is not there.” Dr. Stephen Stephen, the director of DFO’s Biotechnology and Aquatic Animal Health Sciences Branch, also rejected suggestions federal employees prejudged this fall’s ISA

investigation. “We’re not about disproving anything,” he said. “We’re about proving the facts.” He and other federal panelists defended CFIA’s recent determination that re-testing failed to confirm any presence of ISA in several wild salmon collected separately by SFU professor Rick Routledge and independent biologist Alexandra Morton. Stephen said the need for accuracy in announcing disease findings is critical, because of potential major impacts to international and domestic trade, as well as fishermen, fish farmers and First Nations. Some of the scientists who conducted the lab tests for Routledge and Morton that delivered the initial positive results testified they felt attacked or intimidated by CFIA during the follow-up investigation. Ottawa was mainly interested in finding faults with their meth-

odology, they said. CFIA witnesses said they sought to determine if the samples had been cross-contaminated with the virus in the lab or if other handling procedures led to an erroneous result. DFO researcher Kristi Miller also told the inquiry that the ISA virus or something similar may have been present in wild B.C. salmon for up to 25 years. The CFIA has promised systematic salmon sampling to test for ISA in B.C. waters starting next year. The inquiry wrapped up hearings Dec. 19. A final report and recommendations are due by next June. Craig Orr, executive director of the Watershed Watch Salmon Society, said he believes ISA is present in B.C. on the basis of the initial tests, although he said it’s unclear what threat, if any, the virus – which has ravaged farmed salmon elsewhere in

the world – actually poses to wild salmon. “The bigger question is what is government doing to protect our interests as opposed to protecting very narrow interests like salmon farming and

international,” Orr said in an interview. He said the latest email makes it hard to trust the federal agencies. “Salmon is a public resource,” Orr said. “We’ve seen all kinds

of evidence throughout Cohen that government information control is really restricting independent science within DFO. Science is completely intertwined with politics.”

Dorozans found guilty Vikki HOPES

Abbotsford News

One of two Abbotsford brothers charged with a series of Lower Mainland break-ins earlier this year has been found guilty in another case. Dane Dorozan, 35, was initially charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking stemming from an offence on Dec. 22, 2010, but was found guilty on Dec. 19 of the lesser charge of drug possession. He is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 13 in

Abbotsford provincial court. Dane still faces charges with his brother Darwin, 36, for 21 break-ins allegedly committed in Surrey, Langley and White Rock. The pair were arrested Aug. 15 following an alleged home break-in in South Surrey. Dane was later charged with two counts of breakand-enter, and Darwin was charged with 19 counts of break-andenter, one count of possession of stolen property, and one count of assault with

December 2011 Rotary Report The Rotary Foundation is a not-for-proďŹ t organization supported solely by voluntary contributions. Its mission is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. Some of the programs the Rotary Foundation supports include PolioPlus, Rotary Peace Fellowships, Ambassadorial Scholarships, Rotary Grants for University Teachers and Group Study Exchange around the world. Since 1985, the Rotary Foundation has provided leadership in a humanitarian project called PolioPlus now recognized worldwide as a model of public-private cooperation. The challenge of this partnership is the global eradication of polio. Through the efforts of Rotarians and their partners, two billion children have been immunized with the polio vaccine. To-date, 210 countries, territories, and areas around the world are polio-free, and 134 of these have been certiďŹ ed polio-free. Rotary has committed more than $900 million to global polio eradication. The remaining challenges include rapidly immunizing every child in the remaining countries; obtaining the funds required to complete the mission; maintaining high quality surveillance; and quickly responding to outbreaks.

a weapon. Dane has previously been convicted of possession for the purpose of trafficking, and break-and-enter. Darwin’s previous convictions include possession of stolen

property, theft, possession for the purpose of trafficking, and breakand-enter. The pair’s next court appearance on the break-in charges is Dec. 29 in Surrey provincial court.

Another criminal charge A man whom Abbotsford Police issued a public warning about earlier this year is in trouble with the law again. David Joseph Dutiaume, 24, was charged with mischief relating to an incident in Abbotsford on Dec. 18. No specifics were available about the matter, and he is next scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 9. He was released on $500 bail. Dutiaume was the subject of a police warning in April, when he was released from prison after serving his full six-year sentence for the violent sexual assault of an 84-year-old Surrey woman. Police warned that he would be living in, or frequenting, the Abbotsford area. At the time, Const. Ian MacDonald said the public was being notified of Dutiaume’s release because concerns arose during his incarceration that reintegration in the community could be an issue. Dutiaume was 15 years old in June 2002 when he posed as a donations collector for Unicef and forced his way into the home of a senior woman. He put a pillow over her face, punched her repeatedly and raped her. DNA evidence tied him to the crime two years later, and he was sentenced as an adult.

ABBOTSFORD NEWS I Tuesday, December 27, 2011

Sibling rivalry during practice pays off in games for UFV women’s basketball team Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News

When University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball coach Al Tuchscherer wants to boost the level of intensity at practice, he has a simple solution. He puts Nicole and Sarah Wierks on opposite teams. Frequently, sparks fly between the siblings, who comprise the Cascades’ starting frontcourt. It’s not the product of ill will – it’s just that when you’ve got two players who are as gritty as sandpaper, it tends to create a bit of friction. “They’re always out to sort of one-up each other,” Tuchscherer said with a chuckle. “Sometimes it gets physical, sometimes they chirp at each other a little bit. But it’s all good. It’s never from the wrong place. “I’ve never had that dynamic before on a team, so it’s interesting, for sure.” The Wierks sisters say they come by their competitive streak honestly. If their parents, Dennis and Debbie Wierks of Chilliwack, happen to be watching one of their games online, they’re liable to yell at the computer screen if a controversial call goes the wrong way. For the girls, that intense mentality means they’re usually leading the Cascades in bruises and floor burns. “We just have a need to be wherever the ball is,” Sarah explained. “If the ball’s on the ground, we’re going after it. We fall so much.” “We don’t fall,” Nicole interjects, correcting her sister. “We dive for the ball. There’s a big difference!”

Nicole, age 20, is the older of the two. In her third year with the Cascades, the 5’10” power forward is staging a breakout campaign – she leads the team in scoring at 13.3 points per game, and she’s second to Sarah in rebounding, hauling down an average of 7.0 boards. Tuchscherer appreciates Nicole as much for her defensive ability as her scoring. “She’s absolutely a lockdown defender,” he said. “I can have Nicole defend anyone in Canada West, whether that’s Diane Schuetze from Thompson Rivers, a big 6’3” post, or Debbie Yeboah from UVic, who’s arguably the quickest point guard in the conference.” Nicole’s success is all the more impressive considering she’s playing without the benefit of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee. She’s torn her ACL twice – once during her Grade 11 year at Chilliwack Secondary, and again prior to her rookie year at UFV. Rather than undergo reconstructive surgery, she’s elected to simply wear a knee brace. “Tearing it again isn’t really a risk I want to take at this point,” she explained. “If I feel I need to get it done after basketball’s over, I’ll do that. “It gets stiff and sore sometimes, but that’s to be expected – it would get stiff and sore anyway.” Sarah, a 19-year-old sophomore centre who stands 6’1”, followed her sister to the Abbotsford campus last fall, and was an instant sensation. She earned Canadian Continued on A21

Snowball basketball tourney set for tip-off

Dan KINVIG

Abbotsford News

If the list of high-profile teams lined up for the upcoming Abbotsford Collegiate Snowball Tournament is any indication, it’s quite possible that the 52nd edition of the annual senior boys basketball extravaganza might be the best yet. “This might be the deepest field we’ve ever had,” asserted Prentice Lenz, head coach of the Abby Collegiate Panthers, whose team hosts the event Jan. 11-14. “It’ll be some very exciting

basketball.” Headlining the hoops showcase is St. Andrew’s of Rhode Island. This marks the fifth year in a row that Snowball organizers are bringing in an elite American program, after importing teams from Alabama, Wisconsin, New York and California in previous years. St. Andrew’s boasts a star senior big man in 6’8” Cedric Kuakumensah, who has committed to Brown University. Sophomore Henry Bolton is also regarded as an elite prospect. The Snowball field also fea-

tures five of B.C.’s preseason top-10 AAA teams, including No. 1 Kelowna, No. 3 W.J. Mouat, No. 6 Kitsilano, No. 7 Burnaby South, and No. 9 St. George’s. Additionally, the Kelvin Clippers are making the trip out from Winnipeg to test themselves against B.C.’s best. Also in attendance are the G.W. Graham Grizzlies of Chilliwack, the province’s No. 2-ranked AA squad, along with a terrific cross-section of Abbotsford talent including the Yale Lions, the MEI Eagles and the host Panthers. For a complete draw, visit abbynews.com.

Girls hockey team wins trip to P.E.I. Christmas came early for an Abbotsford girls hockey team, as they learned last week that they'd won a trip to Prince Edward Island to participate in Hockey Day in Canada. On Tuesday, the Abbotsford Ice atom squad, comprised of 16 girls in the age 9-10 bracket, were practicing on the ice at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre when CBC hockey broadcaster Ron MacLean appeared on the jumbotron screen. He told the team

they'd been picked as winners of a Scotiabank contest to fly a team to Charlottetown, P.E.I. for the annual hockey celebration on Feb. 11. "It was a lot of fun," Ice team manager Rod Wiebe said, recalling the moment. "Ron MacLean gave them the message they were going to PEI, and they couldn't quite believe it. The looked at the coaches and myself and said, 'Did we win?' We said, 'Yeah, you've won.' And then they threw

their gloves in the air, started screaming and jumping. It was quite exciting." The Ice won Scotiabank's Bigger Save contest, in which minor hockey teams from across the country were encouraged to save money toward a team goal. The Abby squad raised $900 to attend a tourney in Surrey, which they accomplished by selling coupon books. As part of the Hockey Day in Canada festivities, the Ice will play an opponent from P.E.I.

Ahn to suit up for Canada’s U19 rugby side Yale Secondary grad Paul Ahn has been named to the roster of Canada's under-19 men's rugby squad for a tour to England in February. The tour will feature matches against three academy sides: Welbeck Form Military College (Feb. 26), Leicester Tigers Academy (Feb. 29) and Northampton Saints Academy (March 3). Ahn has excelled at the regional and national level, winning the

B.C. title with the Fraser Valley selects side, and winning a Canadian championship with the provincial squad last summer. Ahn is also gifted academically – he was one of Yale's top students last year, with an average of over 95 per cent, and he's since moved on to UBC, where he's studying sciences. Fellow Abbotsford native Jorden Best has also been named to the U19 team.

Abbotsford Heat defenceman Jordan Henry battles for position with Bill Sweatt of the Chicago Wolves on Thursday.

Wolves end Heat streak The Chicago Wolves handed the Abbotsford Heat their first regulation-time loss in the month of December, knocking them off 5-2 at Allstate Arena on Thursday evening. The Heat came in having won seven of their last eight games, with the lone defeat coming in overtime. But the Vancouver Canucks affiliate prevailed behind a dominant outing from Mark Mancari, who was playing his first game back with the Wolves after a three-game NHL stint with the Canucks. Mancari notched two goals and an assist to continue his torrid play at the AHL level – he’s posted 13 points over his last seven games with Chicago. The Heat held a pair of one-goal leads in the first period, thanks to a pair of powerplay goals. Jordan Henry opened the scoring

at the 5:43 mark, and after Mancari tied it up, Quintin Laing struck on another manadvantage to give the Heat a 2-1 edge heading into the second. But Mancari and Jordan Schroeder tallied in the middle frame, and Victor Oreskovich gave the Wolves some insurance at the 2:06 mark of the third. Tim Miller rounded out the scoring with 49 seconds remaining – he was credited with a goal after Heat defenceman Clay Wilson hauled him down on an empty-net breakaway. Wolves goalie Eddie Lack turned aside 29 of 31 shots to earn the victory, while his Heat counterpart Danny Taylor stopped 30 of 34 pucks he saw. Abbotsford (20-9-2-0, 42 points) heads into the Christmas break in second place in both the AHL’s West Division and overall standings.

Cascades heading to Ontario From A19

Interuniversity Sport (CIS) all-rookie honours after averaging 10.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. This season, she’s posting averages of 10.0 points and 9.5 boards. The latter total is second-best in Canada West. Last season, the Wierks sisters helped the Cascades to an opening-round playoff upset of the Winnipeg Wesmen, and berths to the Canada West Final Four and the CIS East Regional.

This fall, the UFV women were saddled with some lofty expectations, as they were ranked No. 9 in the preseason. They stumbled out of the gate, suffering a sweep on the road at Thompson Rivers to open the regular season. But they’ve righted themselves recently – on Nov. 26, they upset the No. 5-ranked Alberta Pandas 68-67, and they took a 5-3 conference record into the Christmas break. The Cascades will be looking to build on that when they return to action next week.

They travel to Windsor, Ont. for an exhibition tourney hosted by the defending CIS national champion Windsor Lancers, Dec. 28-30. Nicole Wierks said that performing well in those games would set a positive tone for the second half of the season. “We’re really going to need to step it up,” she noted. “We’re really close as a team. We don’t just play for ourselves – we love our coach, and we play for him and for our teammates. We’ve just got to find a way to win.”

LIKE ALL GOOD THINGS, RECYCLE YOUR RIDE MUST COME TO AN END. RECYCLE YOUR RIDE IS ON ALL ACROSS CANADA — ONLY UNTIL JANUARY 3RD AND ONLY AT YOUR FORD STORE.

Ford’s Recycle Your Ride program is a great incentive for consumers looking to save on their next vehicle while responsibly recycling their old one. Since the program was first offered in 2009, Ford’s Recycle Your Ride program has retired more than 50,000 old vehicles. And now, in an effort to recycle even more, the program has been expanded to include 2005-model-year-or-older vehicles. So even more people can receive between $500 and $3000* in incentives towards purchasing or leasing our smartest, safest and most fuel-efficient Ford vehicles — like the Focus, Fusion and F-150, and even the award-winning Fiesta and Edge. Our goal is to replace as many older vehicles still on the road today with more fuel-efficient, lower-emission Ford cars, CUVs, SUVs and trucks. And you can help. If it’s time to recycle your ride, just visit any Ford Store across the country. But hurry, because Recycle Your Ride is only back for a limited time.

‘I W would dance’

Melissa W WELSH Abbotsfor Abbotsford rd News

Local dancer invited to two national ballet summer schools

alking into the balstudio let stud io at the Scotia Bank B Dance Centre in i VancouBrooke ver, Bro ooke Thomas wasn’t sure s of what to expect. expec ct. With her h hair neatly pulled back, b the 10-yearold wore e the number 23 pinned to her black body suit. Along g with close to 30 other dancers, dancers s, she was about to audition for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet summerr school. “There “Therre were so many of us , they had to move m four extra barres into the centre of o the room.” When n the instructors gave the applidirection cants di irection to jump, Brooke knew it was herr time to shine. “The guy g came and looked at me doing jumps. the jum mps. I was pretty sure I did it right, but not totally sure.” Yet within wiithin that same week, a letter arrived at the Thomas T residence, indicating the had been chosen to attend the young dancer d prestigious prestigi ious ballet school’s month-long sumworkshop. mer wor rkshop. With another ballet audition scheduled later a same that sam me week for the National Ballet of Canada’s Canada ’s summer program, the letter of acceprelieved tance re elieved a little pressure for Brooke. “We were pretty sure that she would go to the w Royal Winnipeg, W but we chose to still audition for the National N because it would be a good experience,” experien nce,” said Brooke’s mom, Brenda. With the t National Ballet of Canada, the dancerss find out directly following the audition n whether they are chosen. Brooke’s Brook ke’s number was one out of the

five called. When she attended her dance classes that week at Dynamic Dance, Brooke shyly told her teachers that she would be deciding between both schools. “I guess you could kind of say that they were proud of me,” she said, sitting on the couch beside her seven-year-old sister Paige. The two sisters often practise their routines in their living room, so much so that their mom moves the furniture up against the walls, in order to create enough space. Her family, along with her teachers understand that getting into one national ballet summer school is an accomplishment for a young dancer. Getting into two is something else. The RWB and the National’s summer programs are a separate audition for the year-long programs that lead into the profesVIDLEIONE sional divisions. ON wss.com The family has since decided abbyne that Brooke will attend the RWB this summer. Brenda explained that if Brooke got in to the school, she would possibly attend the year-long programs when she is in high school. “To live away from home at 11, that’s pretty young,” said Brenda, with Brooke nodding emphatically. Dancing from the age of three, Brooke said that although the competitive reality of ballet makes her scared, it would be cool if she was one of the few who has a dancing career. Even with graduation close to eight years away, Brooke already knows what she would do: “I would dance.” MELISSA WELSH PHOTO Abbotsford News

Brooke Thomas, 10, will be pursuing high-level training this summer at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.
