Abbotsford – Canada’s most generous city

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION More than 4,000 people came out to see the Downtown tree-lighting event A5

This community leads nation in giving for ninth consecutive year Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News

For the ninth straight year, Abbotsford is the most giving community in Canada. Donors in the Abbotsford/Mission census metropolitan area gave a median donation of $620 to charities in 2010, Statistics Canada reported. That is well ahead of second-place Calgary and Victoria, which tied at $390.

According to Stats Can, there were 25,650 donors in Abbotsford – tax filers who claimed a donation – and they gave almost $74 million, which was 5.1 per cent more than 2009. Major Agnes Hailes, who heads the Salvation Army in Abbotsford with her husband Ross, said has seen the giving first hand, as she staffs the Sally Ann kettles. “I’m always overwhelmed by people’s

More than 4,000 attend tree lighting

The 22nd annual Christmas Tree Lighting attracted nearrecord crowds to the downtown core on Sunday. People were lined up “shoulder to shoulder” to watch the free entertainment and see the iconic tree lit up for the holiday season, according to Tina Stewart, executive director of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association. She estimated between 4,000 and VIDLEIONE 4,500 people attendON ws.com ed the event on abbyne Sunday. Normally the crowd is about 3,000 but Stewart believes the new lights on the tree created more interest. A $15,000 lighting system created a new, brighter look this year. An issue with the company delivering the community stage created a delay in the entertainment. However, once it arrived, the festivities kicked into high gear. The arrival of Santa, on a 1963 fire truck, added to the family fun.

Some quiet coming to Jackson Street Neighbourhood to get wall to block highway noise

Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News

A measure of peace and quiet will be coming to Jackson Street residents. The provincial government has announced plans to build a wall to block highway sound that fills their neighbourhood. The structure will be at least two metres high and 250 metres long, running from the McCallum interchange west. It will cost between $300,000 and $400,000, provided by the Ministry of Transportation. “It’s a win for everybody,” said Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen, who represented the neighbourhood’s concerns to Victoria. The issue came to light

in July, when residents said they were being bombarded with noise after the construction of a nearby freeway climbing lane, and the removal of a row of trees that had acted as a visual and sound barrier. Residents complained the highway noise kept them awake nights and disrupted their quality of life. Van Dongen credited the residents with selling their argument to government, saying it was a convincing and determined lobby. “It’s a big day for us, I’m absolutely ecstatic,” said Sandi Lyon, who helped lead the charge for Jackson Street residents, and held a little party to celebrate on Saturday. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service has a goal to keep its annual Christmas wreath green throughout December. The wreath is set up at firehall 1 (32270 George Ferguson Way). It has 31 green lights, representing each day of the month. For every day on which a preventable residential fire occurs, a green light is replaced with a red light. There is also a sign board at hall 1 listing the number of residential fires, the number of “other calls,” and the total number of incidents. The board is updated every morning in December. Fire safety tips are provided on the City of Abbotsford website at abbotsford.ca/fire.

Hull acquitted of assault

Vikki HOPES

Abbotsford News

David Hull, the previous executive director of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, has been acquitted of assaulting his former girlfriend in May of this year. Judge Kenneth Skilnick presided over the case in Abbotsford provincial court on Monday. Hull, 53, was arrested and charged with assault in the early morning of May 28 after Allison Longshore, his girlfriend at the time, filed a report with police. Longshore, 35, testified during the one-day trial by judge that the pair began a relationship in September 2010, and began living together in November. Longshore said she told Hull in April that she wanted to separate. They were still living together when, on the night of May 27, they went to a gala event,

both consuming several drinks throughout the evening. They returned to their home after midnight, and Longshore said she asked Hull to leave. An argument ensued. The two told the judge different versions of what transpired. Longshore said she was grabbed and held down by Hull, who maintained he did not grab her, but had his hands on her shoulders to calm her because she said she would leave the apartment and he was concerned about her safety. The judge said he was not sure, beyond a reasonable doubt, that Hull had used “intentional force.” Hull was suspended from his job with the Chamber of Commerce on June 3 and resigned three weeks later. He still faces charges of criminal harassment and breach of his release conditions, stemming from another incident this year.

Six months of stress

cake with “Thank-you John” written on it. She said the issue was only resolved once the MLA went to bat for residents. “It’s been quite a struggle. John here was our shining star.” She lobbied city hall and the ministry of transportation, writing a series of letters over a four-month span. “I tried to document how we had proceeded, what we had done, and how the loss of the trees affected our lives. She said there was no “getting used to” the sounds from the highway, and people were kept awake or woken up by highway noise. Her family spent much less time on their deck last summer. Ted and Angela Zak worried that their son Teddy, who has autism and is highly sensitive to sound, could get a stress-induced seizure from the noise. A seizure put him in hospital

for three months last year. “It was a huge worry,” said Ted, “he could potentially die.” He was glad to get the sound wall, but upset that it took such a fight. “It’s a little bit bittersweet. Why did we have to go through six months of stress?” Jay Porter, the ministry project manager, said the wall will be made of wood panelling with concrete posts. Using wood may allow builders to go as high as three meters, which will stop more noise. He has done similar “sound attenuation” projects, and said residents should be pleased. “It will make a big difference,” he said. Noting their proximity to the freeway, and the fact that the nearby merging from three lanes to two results in some blasting of horns, he said “a sound wall here will be a really good thing.” The job will go to tender in January, and work could begin as soon as February.

‘Overwhelmed’ by generosity From A1

around the planet, Bremner sees the generosity of this city, which has a large Mennonite community that supports MCC’s efforts directly. “A large portion of our supporters live in Abbotsford,” Bremner said. Every year the MCC festival and auction at Tradex raises more than $500,000 for charity in a single weekend event. He said MCC operates three thrift shops in Abbotsford that do $2.5 million in sales and have a net income of over $800,000 per year. For all of B.C., MCC thrift shops generate $1.5 million in net proceeds, so the Abbotsford stores represent more than half. “Of course, it’s not just Mennonites – it’s people in the community. Other faith groups have a similar story,” he said, noting in particular that the Sikh faith shares the same values. If, as Bremner says, coming from impoverished nations, and being religious are indeed contributors to charity, then Abbotsford is prominent in both demographics. Census data

shows 61 per cent of people identify themselves as Christians. Also, 26 per cent of the city’s population was born outside of Canada. Deb Lowell, the Sally Ann public relations director, said she has lived in many communities across Canada, and has found Abbotsford unique. “The spirit here is of generosity, for sure. When we present a need, the community responds.” While she allows that “Christian charity” is likely a factor, there is no doubt in her mind that the entire community shares that ethic. “It’s a really responsive community – it’s the culture of where we live.” The stats show that 710,000 British Columbians gave to charities, with an average donation of $370 in 2010. That represents 22 per cent of all tax filers. Across Canada, claimed donations to charity were $8.3 billion, and donations were up 6.5 per cent from the previous year. There were 5.7 million donors, or 23.4 per cent of all tax filers, and the national median donation was $260.

SANTA SHUFFLE Getting into the holiday spirit was easy for (left to right) Veronica Holt, Maureen Holm, Shelby and Owen Godin, who got dressed up for the Salvation Army’s Annual Santa Shuffle. The event, which took place on Saturday at Ellwood Park, included a 5-km fun run and a 1-km elf walk. More than 200 people took part, and while final numbers are not yet tallied, organizers believe more than $5,000 was raised. JOHN MORROW

ABBOTSFORD NEWS I Tuesday, December 6, 2011

Most generous city Generosity is always a highly regarded trait, and this city’s residents embody the spirit of giving. For nine straight years, donors in Abbotsford/Mission have been the most generous in the country. Statistics Canada reveals that 2010 tax filers in this community claimed an average of $620 in charitable receipts. This was well ahead of the second most charitable cities – Calgary and Victoria – at $390. It was also more than double the national median of $260. To do this once is noteworthy, but nine times in consecutive years is a tremendous accomplishment. Those who work for social relief agencies in Abbotsford say that when the calls goes out for a cause, the community responds. Filomena Nalewajek of Canuck Place Abbotsford found this when she started fundraising for the children’s hospice here. Ahead of schedule on her $9.75-million fundraising campaign, she

told The News the community support surprised her. It’s not just a group or demographic that makes the difference, it is an attitude that has become part of the character of the city. It is evident during fundraising, and it is just as prominent when people are asked to donate their time to help with a community event. There is still much to be done, as the operators of local charities such as the Salvation Army and food bank will attest. At this time of year, they still need your support to make sure everyone in this city has a warm and well-fed Christmas. There are many excellent causes in this community deserving of your support, such as the Christmas Bureau, Mennonite Central Committee and all of the elements of the Campus of Care. Next year, we expect to report that Abbotsford will have maintained its “most generous” status for a full decade, thanks to you.

Prosperity, for those who want it Mark

Rushton On the

Other Hand Noted last week in one of the daily newspapers that an NDP MLA is going to spend a month trying to live on the $610 welfare rate for employable men. Noble gesture, but pointless other than to garner media headlines. Nowhere in the story did it say that he was giving up or donating his $8,500 a month salary while living in poverty. Additionally, he gets to spend one night a week at home with the family, eating good food, being clean and, I’d guess, getting some snuggles. There isn’t much of that available to the real guy on welfare, and he doesn’t have, at the end of the month, a well paying job to fall back on. As for trying to live on $610 a month: take out the $375 (minimum) needed for a room and there isn’t a lot leftover for food, let alone anything else. I know if I tried it there would go the

cigarettes ($300 a month), wine and beer, regular trips to Canadian Tire for stuff I don’t need but just ‘gotta have.’ Perhaps for health reasons alone, I should give it a try! Flippancy aside, $610 a month is an appallingly small amount to live on, but remember, this is for employable single men. It should be seen only as very shortterm assistance to ward off starvation while you find and get a job. And based on Sunday’s front page story about Dawson Creek having zero unemployment and businesses crying out for more workers, there are jobs available. Found it revealing that the mayor of that northern city was in Vancouver recently and tried to convince a few of the “Occupy” bunch to find work in his town. No takers! Also no job takers down here when farmers need to harvest their crops … they have to rely often on imported labour from Mexico, yet we have many who sit around collecting their meager welfare rates, complain about it, and do nothing to get out of the malaise of poverty. But, low incomes aren’t just faced by those who are too lazy, unwilling to work or, due to mental health issues, stuck in

the cycle. What about those who spent their entire lives working, but never saved? They hit 65 years of age, are out of a job and have to look forward to living the rest of their lives on CPP, OAP and GIS, which in total isn’t much more than $1,500 a

Poverty will continue to be an unpalatable but real certainty of our society. month. That number takes the ‘golden’ out of your retirement years. At a family Christmas gathering this weekend, conversation led to the likelihood that today’s generation of workers might be the last to be able to afford the lifestyle so many of us enjoy – big houses, multiple vehicles, all the trappings of comfort. Then I reflected on what is happening

now in the resource industry in Northern B.C., and the potential for even more jobs if the Site C dam is built. Back in my youth, the Bennett dam was constructed, and that ensured prosperity for so many, plus it provided the power source that resulted in tens of thousands of other jobs created when industry and commerce flocked to our province. Opportunity in the Lower Mainland may not be as quick as it is in the north, but it will come back. And the future, while it will always have its ups and downs, will for those willing to work hard be as strong as it has always been. Poverty too, will continue to be omnipresent, an unpalatable but real certainty of our society. I don’t have any time for those men who beg for money at shopping centre exits, but I do have a keen empathy for those who through no fault of their own live in abject poverty. At this time of the year, when most of us enjoy the fruits of our labours with friends and family, think of those very less fortunate and put aside a little ‘Christmas cheer’ for them.

Writer misses the point of an education Canada. These apparently do not draw the same attention. The benefits of lear ning another language are not exclusive to any particular language. I am thrilled to hear that the school district is making education in another language as relevant as possible to the students they are trying to educate. I remember my days of slogging

through French class, not knowing if I would ever talk to another person who spoke the language, and at the time wondered what the point of the class was. By providing the opportunity (which by the way is open to all students in those schools that offer it), the Abbotsford School District is recognizing the relevance of Punjabi to a com-

munity wherein this language is used daily. What a wonderful opportunity for students to practise their new skills with their friends and their families. I am delighted at

Excuse not to recycle The recent letter concerning “No blue boxes” caught my eye. Having lived in a city that requires sorting, I can attest that Abbotsford’s blue bag program is neither a deterrent nor inconvenient. A leisurely walk around my neighbourhood on garbage day reaffirms how effective this program is, as curbsides abound with bags of blue. Combined with the city’s compost/yard waste program, I typically throw out one can of garbage bi-weekly. It is so easy, even my husband and toddler can do it. Throw everything in the bag, drop it off at the curb and voila!

That’s it! Plus, you don’t need to put the bags/boxes away. Blue recycling bags are not purchased individually. You buy them in boxes, just like garbage bags. I find it difficult to believe that if it’s terribly inconvenient for your mother-in-law to purchase a box of blue bags when she is already at the grocery store, that she would be willing to sort through her recycling or bring such bags/boxes to and from the curb each week. This sounds like an excuse not to recycle. It’s much easier to toss everything in the trash.

OCCUPY IN ABBY Occupy the Fraser Valley, the local offshoot of the Occupy Wall Street protest, was at the Clearbrook Library on Saturday, protesting the omnibus crime bill C-10 which is currently before the House of Commons. The bill, among its many measures, would give pot growers mandatory jail time for as few as six plants. The group has been active for about a month, holding weekend protests on Saturdays in Chilliwack, Abbotsford, and next weekend in Hope.

A 65-year-old man who was reported lost on Sumas Mountain in Abbotsford late Thursday afternoon was rescued at about 8:30 p.m. Const. Ian MacDonald said the man was cold, but in good spirits. Police received a call at about 4:30 p.m. from the man’s female hiking partner, who said the two had become separated. Abbotsford Police Department staff made phone contact with the man, and several resources were deployed. Sixteen members of Central Fraser Valley Search and Rescue attended, along with APD patrol division officers, a K9 unit and police helicopter Air 1. MacDonald said Air 1 played an integral role in locating a small light held by the hiker to mark his position to searchers. “The extrication of the man was complicated by darkness and the steep terrain of the area,” he said. The hikers were adequately prepared for the trek, but the combination of becoming separated and the increasing darkness created a situation where “assistance was the only option,” MacDonald added.

Fraser Health plan delayed Jeff NAGEL Black Press

The year is almost over but Fraser Health has yet to release its 2011 service plan that details its priorities and spending – information critics say is needed to scrutinize the authority’s $2.5-billion budget and hold its appointed board to account. Service plans previously were released in early fall – already months late for a fiscal year that begins April 1. But this year all health authority service plans remain stuck in Victoria, where provincial government officials say more work continues to finalize them. “The ministry has been busy working with health authorities to ensure the information and the data is accurate,” a ministry spokesman said. “This work is important because these plans lay out a complex, three-year operational plan.” He said the reports should be released within a few weeks. NDP leader Adrian Dix said it reflects a continuing government effort to hide the details of health spending and planning. Service plans were originally created on a promise to bring “transparency, openness and accountability” to health planning. Health authority service plans originally had 77 performance indicators to measure patient care, hospital wait times and other objectives. By 2010, just eight performance measures remained.

A b b o t s f o r d Restorative Justice and Advocacy Association (ARJAA) is among eight national organizations that have been recognized by the annual Ron Wiebe Restorative Justice Award program. The award is presented by the Correctional Service of Canada’s restorative justice division. ARJAA was among those receiving a certificate of recognition during the 13th annual awards dinner and conference in Kamloops at the end of November. The Ron Wiebe Restorative Justice Award began in June 1999 in honour of the late former warden of Ferndale and Elbow Lake correctional institutions who died of cancer. He believed in the vision and values of restorative justice and modelled these in his family, work and community life. The award recognizes Canadians who “have demonstrated new and innovative ways of transforming human relationships ... by enabling and promoting communication and healing between people in conflict, whether they are victims, offenders, colleagues, families or neighbours.” ARJAA executive director Tony deWaal accepted the award on behalf of the organization, which has 14 mentors and 20 mediators for conflict resolution. Sixty hours of training is now being offered to another 20 volunteers. As well, the agency has a team of four that works with the Abbotsford Police Department, and is projected to handle 125 files from 48 different offices this year. ARJAA also handles referrals from local schools. For more information, visit http://www.arjaa.org or call 604-864-4857.

‘Passport to Christmas’ shopping

Tour takes shoppers to different destinations on the quest for the perfect gift Lower Mainland residents are invited on a sweeping shopping adventure, courtesy of Tourism Abbotsford and an assortment of local businesses. Until Dec. 24, people looking for the perfect holiday treasure or a memorable winter out-

ing can embark on the Passport to Christmas tour, visiting up to 13 destinations around Abbotsford that specialize in everything from the unique to the unusual. An initial stop at the Abbotsford Visitor Centre lands you a

copy of the tour brochure and your first of six stamps (required to enter the Dec. 23 prize draw). From there, you have the choice of heading to high tea, award-winning wine, an elaborate ‘Tree House’ and more. Yvonne Hayden,

director of visitor services for Tourism Abbotsford, explains that the novelty of the businesses is what makes the tour so popular, nearly a decade after it started. “It’s not your average shopping experience. Glenda’s

Christmas Cottage, for example, is only open for November and December. There is a building on her acreage that is specifically set up just for this. “It creates a minitourist season for Abbotsford.” All vendors, chosen

via an application process for their diversity and local character, are family friendly. Take your children to Clayburn Village Store & Tea Shop to marvel at imported candies and delicacies from around the world, or Tanglebank

Gardens to participate in creative workshops with one of the founding Passport program businesses. The complete list of participating shops and this year’s prizes can be found online at passporttochristmas. ca.

Sing along with A-Tones Abbotsford locals can sing or listen to Christmas carols with the A-Tones’s sing-alongs, every Monday from 1 - 3 p.m. at the Seniors Association, at 33889 Essendene Ave. The group celebrates older tunes, that include genres gospel, folk music, blues, and country. Holiday music will be on the song list up until Christmas. All ages are invited, song lyrics are provided, and attendees are encouraged to bring instruments. Organizers say the event is an excellent opportunity for those learning the English language, and for seniors who experience dementia. For more information, phone Ed Wilson at 604-853-8624 or email him at songbag@bigstring. com.

‘Real change can happen’ Acclaimed Canadian country music artist Paul Brandt gives back Melissa WELSH Abbotsford News

A

fter 15 years in the music industry, Paul Brandt is taking a look back. On his most recent album, Brandt re-recorded hits “I do,” and “My Heart Has a History,” giving the classic songs a new sound. “I made the album to remember what happened, but it’s not a sad exploration of the past, just a quick reflection,” Brandt told The News during a recent interview. Since debuting in 1996, Brandt has become the most awarded male Canadian country artist in history, with gold and triple platinum albums, and numerous Canadian Country Music and Juno Awards. Most recently, the musician performed for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at the Calgary Stampede during the couple’s tour of Canada, and released his 10th album, “Give it away.” Brandt’s first season of his documentary series, “Built It Forward,” also wrapped this year, with the last episodes just recently airing on the Country Music Television (CMT) channel. The show chronicles the lives of seven families who work, but cannot afford decent living conditions. Each family receives a new home, but are responsible for giving back as well. Travelling to developing countries with Brandt and his wife Elizabeth, the families build homes for others who are in similar financial situations. charities and has travelled to Ethiopia, Malawi, Uganda, Chile, South Korea, Bosnia and Cambodia for humanitarian projects. Part of the proceeds from his newest album will go towards Brandt’s “The Priceles$ Gift of Hope Foundation” – an organization that seeks to raise awareness and funds to stop human trafficking. After meeting a little girl in Cambodia who had been sold into slavery, Brandt says that every performance has new meaning. “It’s about selflessness and what you can do for other people. I know that the passion I have behind (performing) is changing the world.” The Alberta native also hosted the “Up from the Ashes” benefit concert in Edmonton this past September, in support of those affected by the Slave Lake fire. The concert raised close to $170,000 for supplies to rebuild the destroyed regional library. While his love for music continues, with his 11th album entitled “Just As I Am,” being released sometime in 2012, so will his philanthropic efforts. “At 23, I realized that I could use this career as a platform, a tool to do good things,” Brandt said. “I really believe that when people know what they are worth, real change can happen.” Brandt plays at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre on Wednesday, Dec. 14. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $34.30 and $47.50 and can be purchased at the AESC box office, by phone at 1-866-977-AESC (2372) or online www.livenation.com.

The Ten Thousand Villages Christmas craft fair returns to Abbotsford, starting today. The sale continues until Dec. 10 and runs daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Emmanuel Mennonite Church, 3471 Clearbrook Rd., with extended hours until 9 p.m. on Dec. 9. The store sells products from more than 30 countries, providing work for nearly 60,000 people around the world. This year’s event focuses on artisans from Africa. One unique item that will be sold is the Away with Hunger Scarf. Proceeds from the sale of this cotton item, selling for $30 each, will provide food and relief in the horn of Africa, where many artisans, their families and communities have been affected by famine. Ten Thousand Villages will contribute $5 from each sale to famine relief in Africa through the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). Craft Link Kenya has pledged to contribute 10 per cent of its sales to the purchase of dried food for its craft producers and their families. Ten Thousand Villages volunteer Mika Toews said she is excited about the sale, taking place in the church she attends. “I absolutely believe in the work of Ten Thousand Villages,” she said. “It makes such a difference to artisans – but not only that, it also makes a difference to the communities in which they live with things like health clinics, education and clean water.” For more information, visit tenthousandvillages. ca, http://mcc.org or emmanuelmennonite.com.

The Cadillac SRX enters 2012 with a greater combination of performance, technology and capability, building on the momentum of record-setting sales and more conquests from import owners in the mid-luxury crossover segment. Retail sales were up 17.7 percent in the first half of 2011 – a notable feat considering 2010 sales were up more than 150 percent for the year.

SRX: bold, potent, refined and ingenious

A new, more powerful 3.6L V-6 headlines the changes for 2012 and becomes the sole engine offered in the SRX. It is rated at 308 horsepower (230 kW) with efficiency-enhancing features including direct injection and continuously variable valve timing. It also delivers 265 lb.-ft. of torque (359 Nm), with peak torque achieved at a low 2,400 rpm and continuing through 5,300 rpm, giving the SRX a greater feeling of acceleration from a standstill, at low speeds and when passing. The 3.6L is also E85 ethanol-capable. The 3.6L is matched with the Hydra-Matic 6T70 six-speed automatic transmission, which features a driver-selectable Eco feature that alters the shift points for up to 1-mpg improved fuel economy in normal driving conditions. Other enhancements to the 2012 SRX include standard Bluetooth phone connectivity on the Base model, a heated steering wheel on the Luxury, Performance

and Premium Collections and door lock switches on the driver and passenger door panels. The new model will continue to have door lock switches on the center console. Also for 2012, SRX will offer a new machinedface finish on the 20-inch wheels, which are standard on Performance and Premium Collections. SRX seats five and delivers generous occupant and cargo room, wrapped in the dramatic and signature Cadillac style that has pushed the brand back to the top of the world’s luxury manufacturer ranks.

It is offered in a Base model and Luxury, Performance and Premium Collections, with all-wheel drive offered on all but the Base model. Popular features returning for 2012 include a moveable cargo fence and large under-floor storage space in the rear, a liftgate that can be programmed to stop at different heights and the UltraView sunroof that covers 70 percent of the vehicle roof.

Gold standard

Heartbreak for Hawks in football final

MEI Eagles stage thrilling rally, win eighth B.C. title in 10 years Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News

The Mennonite Educational Institute senior boys volleyball team capped a decade of dominance with a dramatic comeback victory in the AA provincial title game on Saturday evening in Kelowna. The top-seeded Eagles were flying high heading into the gold medal match against the College Heights Cougars of Prince George, having dropped just one set all tournament long. The Cougars stunned the favourites, though, winning the first two sets 25-21 and 25-23 to push the Eagles to the brink. College Heights had already engineered one upset, knocking off No. 2-ranked Langley Christian in the semifinals, and they were fast closing in on a second. “It’s tough to go into a provincial final on such an emotional high, and then drop the first two sets,” Eagles head coach Jeff Stel noted. “The guys wanted it so bad, they

got tense. “I told them (after the second set) I believed they could still win, and I looked in their eyes and said, ‘You’re a good team.’ I said it about 10 times to each player. I think that just relaxed them, and then they went out and fired on all cylinders.” With their backs against the wall, the Eagles rallied, winning the last three sets 25-16, 25-19, 15-9. The epic rally extended MEI’s remarkable senior boys volleyball dynasty, as they won their eighth AA crown in the past 10 seasons. The two seasons where the Eagles didn’t didn’t climb to the top step of the podium, they won silver (2004) and bronze (2010). “I was getting a little nervous,” Eagles left side Jeremy Lieuwen admitted with a chuckle afterward, reflecting on the period of crisis after the second set. “We had to start fighting, or we were going home. The Mount Douglas Rams will remember the 2011 Subway Bowl as an instant classic, which it was. The W.J. Mouat Hawks will recall it as the one that got away, which would also be accurate. In a game of wild momentum swings, the Victoria-based Rams trailed by 22 points late in the second quarter, but came roaring all the way back to stun the Hawks 42-35 in the B.C. AAA high school football championship game at B.C. Place Stadium on Saturday. “It was a great game between two great teams,” Mouat running back Devin Logan summarized in the aftermath, standing outside a quiet Hawks locker room. “Our team played hard, and played as a family. We just didn’t get the win.” The play that will endure in the memory bank – evoking either good vibes or chagrin, depending on your perspective – came on the last play of the second quarter. Adam Hadwin will have to wait at least one more year to play full-time on the PGA Tour. The 24-year-old pro from Abbotsford fell short at the final stage of Q-School in La Quinta, Calif., finishing in a tie for 100th place at one over par. would have yielded him a PGA Tour card for next season. Hadwin found himself in solid position through three rounds, sitting in a tie for 19th at seven under par after opening with rounds of 70, 69 and 70. But Q-School is a grueling six-round grind, and Hadwin ran into some turbulence on Saturday, shooting a 76. On Sunday, he bogeyed three of his final four holes en route to a 75 that all but ended his hopes, and he finished up with a 73 in Monday’s final round. The disappointment of Q-School aside, Hadwin’s exploits this season have thrilled Canadian golf fans. The Canadian Tour regular ear ned $440,752 US in five PGA Tour starts, including a made cut at the U.S. Open, and top-10 finishes at the RBC Canadian Open and the Frys.com Open. Looking for a Seniors’ Residence?

Abbotsford News

On Sunday evening, Abbotsford Heat goalie Leland Irving watched his long-awaited NHL opportunity unfold in real time. After the Heat’s 3-1 road win over the Chicago Wolves earlier in the afternoon, Irving and a handful of teammates – Ben Walter, Chris Breen, Quintin Laing and Guillaume Desbiens – ventured out to a restaurant for dinner. The players asked the restaurant staff to switch the channel to the Calgary FlamesVancouver Canucks game, and during the third period, they watched as Flames goalie Henrik Karlsson left the game with a knee injury following a goalmouth collision. Ten minutes later, Irving’s cell phone rang. It was Heat head coach Troy Ward, informing him he was being recalled by the Flames. Speaking with The News on Monday morning, Irving expressed sympathy for Karlsson, who was placed on the injured reserve with a sprained MCL in his right knee. But he acknowledged that getting his first NHL call-up was a special moment. “It was pretty exciting, and the guys were excited for me,” said Irving, 23. “It was very cool

They won three games in three days on the weekend, including two against the Wolves, the Vancouver Canucks’ affiliate. On Friday, the Heat rallied from a 2-0 deficit to nip Chicago 3-2 in a shootout. On Saturday, Ben Walter’s goal with 1:20 remaining lifted Abbotsford to a 2-1 win over the Rockford IceHogs. On Sunday, the Heat

made a return trip to Chicago, where they beat the Wolves 3-1 behind two goals from Quintin Laing. Goalie Danny Taylor, signed to an AHL contract by the Heat on Friday, started Sunday’s game and made 25 saves. With Irving out of the picture, Taylor and Joni Ortio will handle the goaltending chores for the foreseeable future. The Heat return home this week for a Friday-Saturday set against the Lake Erie Monsters at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre.

Nathan Henczel of the W.J. Mouat Hawks cuts the legs out from under Mount Douglas running back Mason Swift during the AAA title game at B.C. Place.

Markin went 7-for-14 for 175 yards and two TD passes. Nathan Henczel also found the end zone, while Jake Heathcote was named the outstanding lineman of the game after a 17-tackle performance. Rams running back Mason Swift took home the MVP award after posting 158 yards from scrimmage and three majors. The Hawks had succeeded in stuffing the Rams’ vaunted running game early, but Mount Douglas made an adjustment to get the ball into the hands of their playmakers – Swift and Terrell Davis – via the pass. “Defensively, we were having trouble with their passing game, and eventually that opened up the run game, Hawks head coach Denis Kelly noted. “With Terrell Davis, you blink and he’s by you, and the same thing with Mason Swift. They did a good job in the second half. “We were playing a great football team, and we sure had them scared for a long time. I was really proud of the way we played overall. For more coverage, including a photo slide show, visit abbynews.com

quarterback Jordan Deverill rolled to his right to escape pressure and heaved a higharcing Hail Mary pass into the right corner of the end zone. Mouat’s Deion Bain got his hand on the ball, but the pigskin fell right into the arms of a diving Mount Douglas receiver, Brian Dowds, for an improbable touchdown. The play infused the Rams with a sense of belief, and they outscored the Hawks 30-7 in the second half en route to victory. “It was like everything froze, recounted Dowds, who had hustled from the far side of the end zone when he saw Deverill scrambling. “I saw them tip it, and it was just hanging there, so I dove for it. The Hawks, for their part, felt the ball might have touched the turf before Dowds wrapped his arms around it. “I thought I could knock it down, Bain said. “I saw the ball on the ground, but the ref called it a completion. “But that’s just life. Logan had a big game in defeat, rushing for 155 yards and scoring three TDs. Falcons fall in final Dan KINVIG

Samwell Uko of the Abbotsford peewee black Falcons sheds a would-be tackler in emphatic fashion during the provincial final on Sunday in Langley. Uko scored two TDs, but the Falcons lost 28-12 to North Delta.

Abbotsford News

The Abbotsford peewee black Falcons saw their bid for a B.C. community football title fall just short, as they dropped a 28-12 decision to North Delta in the provincial final on Sunday at Langley’s McLeod Park. “We came up against a quality opponent, and it just wasn’t our day,” Falcons team manager Paul Gervais said. “Most of our kids had pretty good games, but we just couldn’t stop them on a couple different drives. We made a few mistakes, and it cost us. “But the kids battled right to the end.” Samwell Uko had a big game for the Falcons, rushing for both of the team’s touchdowns and earning team MVP honours. Ezra GarciaLanda won the most sportsmanlike player award. The peewee black squad’s run to the B.C. final was the highlight of the local community football association’s 25th anniversary season.

Split for Pilots

The Abbotsford Pilots split a pair of games last week, edging their local rivals from Mission, before dropping a home game against the North Vancouver Wolf Pack. On Thursday, the Pilots beat the Mission Icebreakers 4-1 at Mission Leisure Centre. Four different players bulged the twine – Riley Lamb, Dakota Schipper, Scott Rae-Douglas and Luke Venema – while Aaron Oakley picked up the win by stopping 25 of 26 Icebreakers shots. On Friday at MSA Arena, the Wolf Pack potted three of the last four goals of the game en route to a 5-3 win. Adam Rossi's powerplay goal at 15:12 of the third period had gotten the Pilots to within a goal at 4-3, but North Van's Quin Buckellew scored 48 seconds later to supply some insurance. The Pilots host Mission this Friday (7:30 p.m., MSA Arena).

With that came confidence, as we started seeing results.” Lieuwen earned tournam e n t M V P honours, and Stel said his dynamic play was instrumental in the comeback. “It was probably his best game of the tournament,” the Eagles bench boss said. “He jumped a few inches higher and was able to hit the ball harder. He really had that drive to pull his team together – to be that physical and emotional leader to take the pressure off the younger guys.” Ben Lieuwen, Jeremy’s younger

brother, was named a first team all-star, while setter Caleb Conrad and middle Jordan Schmidt were second-teamers. Q The senior boys’ triumph capped a terrific season for the MEI volleyball program as a whole. The previous week, t h e Eagles junior boys took bronze at provincials, and the Grade 8 boys won the Fraser Valley championship – the first time a Valley tourney had ever been staged at that level. The Grade 8s beat Fraser Heights in straight sets in the final, and Daniel Siemens was named tournament MVP and Kaden Gamache was an all-star. The MEI senior girls also qualified for the provincials after winning bronze at the Fraser Valleys. They finished seventh at the B.C. AAA tourney, held in Parksville. Q Both Abbotsford Christian senior teams made it to the B.C.’s, and the Knights boys turned in a solid fifth-place finish. The Abby Christian boys struggled during pool play, going 0-3, but came to life in the playoffs, winning three of four games. Their lone playoff loss came in the quarter-finals to eventual champ MEI. Trevor Dykshoorn was named a secondteam all-star, while Dan Vaags and Wes Dewaal were honourable mentions. The Knights girls finished 13th at AA provincials, held at Notre Dame Secondary in Vancouver. Jordyn Visser picked up a team all-star award. Q The Yale Secondary senior boys finished 11th in the AAA draw in Kelowna. The Lions won all three matches during pool play, then beat Delta in their playoff opener. Yale saw its run on the championship side of the bracket come to an end in the round of 16, as they fell in three sets to Oak Bay, who would go on to win the gold medal.

CARNE Ian Clifton Jan. 3, 1923 ~ Oct. 30, 2011

Ian Carne passed away peacefully in Victoria at the age of 88 on October 30, 2011. Raised on the farm in Proctor (near Nelson, BC), he joined the RCAF in 1941 and served with distinction in west Africa, India and Burma until his discharge in 1945. On returning to Canada, he enrolled in the Agriculture Faculty at UBC and received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1949. His entire working career was in the service of the B.C. government, ďŹ rst as a ďŹ eld horticulturist for 20 years in Vernon, Salmon Arm and Abbotsford. His latter 15 years of service were based in Victoria, largely administering agricultural ďŹ nancial programs until his retirement in 1984 as Assistant Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Agriculture. Predeceased by Edna, his wife of 61 years, he is lovingly remembered by his children, Rob (Joan), Les (Sherry), Gary (Diane), Norm and Lynda (Lonnie) as well as grandchildren Tracy, Courtney, Jared, David, Andrew, Dane, MacKenzie and great grandson Christopher; his sister-inlaw Mary, nieces Jean and Deborah and her family. Ian was hard working, honest, and a master gardener with a cheerful sense of humour and a willingness to help out his family and neighbours. He loved his fruit trees and a good game of crib, especially with his agriculture friends’ crib club for many years. He also enjoyed sailing, curling and, along with Edna, was a long time member of the Lakehill Lawn Bowling Club. His family and friends will be gathering in Victoria in January to remember him. Donations may be made in his honour to the CNIB or Canadian Cancer Society.
