Serious injuries in stabbing Police seeking more information, witnesses
POWER STATION FIRE
Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
One man was taken to hospital with serious internal injuries early Sunday morning following a stabbing in Abbotsford, while another required stitches to one of his fingers. Abbotsford Police are now looking for information about the incident, as well as any additional witnesses. Const. Ian MacDonald said an altercation occurred just before 2 a.m. between two groups of men in their early to mid 20s in front of a residence in the 31600 block of Old Yale Road. The fight resulted in a 25-year-old man being transported to Abbotsford Regional Hospital with a stab wound to his abdomen. The man was later airlifted to another hospital for surgery. MACDONALD MacDonald said that while police were assisting at the scene they received a report that a 21-year-old man had gone to hospital at about 2:30 a.m. for treatment of a laceration on his hand. The wound was believed to have been caused by a knife. The man received stitches. MacDonald said police have since had difficulty piecing together exactly what happened. They do not know what led to the fight, the names of all those involved, and whether the two men were wounded by the same weapon. “Nobody involved is being particularly forthcoming,” MacDonald said. He said none of those who have been identified are known to police. Anyone with information on the latest incident is asked to call Abbotsford Police at 604859-5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Premier Christy Clark visited Mission Memorial Hospital Monday afternoon to announce a partnership with VanMar Constructors in developing a $40-million community health centre and campus of care. Although Abbotsford’s hospital does provide spillover care for the needs of Mission residents, Clark said the necessity of an upgrade to Mission’s facilities was made clear to her by local MLAs Randy Hawes and Marc Dalton. Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton said the new 200-bed facility will be a prototype in the province for specialized health care. The health centre is expected to be up to 27,000 square feet with primary care programs, including a diabetes and seniors’ clinic, while the campus of care for seniors will be about 128,000-square-feet, providing 24-hour care.

Water pressure Since water meters were installed in all Abbotsford homes, residents have been charged for the amount of water they use. “Pay for what you use” is an effective measure in water conservation. Last year, the city went one step further, initiating “tiered” water rates. This structure sees users pay a standard rate of $1.13 per cubic metre (1,000 litres). But in the peak use months, May to October, the cost jumps to $1.43 for 60 to 91 cubic metres and rises again to $2.26 for every cubic metre over 91. As one would predict, large families and homes with rental suites see substantially larger water bills. More people in a house inevitably leads to more water use, particularly for showers, laundry and toilet flushes. Council is now under pressure from such homeowners to consider a return to a flat annual rate, or offer a tiered break to high-use groups. It is important to remember that the
“pay for what you use” principle still applies in either case. Bringing back a flat rate is not wise. Abbotsford is a growing city, with a very finite supply of water. Conservation is paramount in controlling water consumption, and the tiered rates are key in achieving those goals. We don’t see this system as being unfair, as some claim. Having large and/or extended families under one roof is a choice. Renting out a suite is a choice, and landlords can price accordingly to reflect tenants’ water use. Expecting the city to continually monitor the number of people in a house in order to charge a lowered rate for large families is unrealistic. The city can adjust the volume levels at which the tiered rates come into effect, to offer some relief. Council should not, however, bow to the pressure to eliminate tiered rates, which are an effective and necessary conservation initiative.
Giving new meaning to ‘pearly white’ teeth Mark
Rushton On the
Other Hand The inspiration for a column comes in many ways, and last week one was delivered in remarkable fashion, which led me first to write a short email to the supplier of the inspiration. The text of that message, delivered to product maker Proctor and Gamble, is as follows: It is not often a column idea pops out of a tube of toothpaste. However, this morning as I was about to brush my teeth, I squoze (past tense of squeeze?) the tube of Crest to deposit a quantity of paste on the brush. It promptly fell off. I shrugged, and delivered forth another dollop from the tube and proceeded with my brushing. Upon completion of said task, I then tried to direct the original gob of paste that had fallen into the sink into the drain. But as I touched it with my
finger, a rather large (approx. 7.5 mm diameter) pearl was revealed. My initial reaction was that Crest had taken a page out of Cracker Jack’s book and was now offering prizes in its packages. Either that, or Crest was providing reality to the toothy term ‘pearly whites.’ However, with the deductive powers of Holmes, I determined that the pearl had a hole pierced part way through it, indicating that it was, in fact, formerly a pearl earring, minus the little metal pin. My question to you is, would you like me to return the pearl so it can be reunited with its owner, or would Crest like to send me another so I have a matched set? (Please ensure the mounting pins are securely in place so that I don’t also lose one.) I have yet to visit a lawyer jeweler to determine my current pearl’s value. Eagerly awaiting a prompt response to enable me to write a positive conclusion to my next column. Apparently they saw no humour in this, as a couple of days later I received a simple reply, assuring me
that the company was very sorry that something other than paste was in my tube of Crest. They indicated they have many checks in place to ensure quality and health issues, and that they would like to evaluate the product by having me return it.
My initial reaction was that Crest had taken a page out of Cracker Jack’s book... I don’t know how further evaluation could come to any other conclusion than the pearl stud merely fell off someone’s ear and into a vat of paste before it was injected into the tube (amazing what watching How It’s Made on TV can teach you). The response also noted that in the process of evaluation, it was possible that the product would be destroyed.
What a surprise! I advised them the next day that “aside from the YUCK factor of realizing that I just brushed my teeth with marinade of ear stud, you have to agree that it is too good a story not to share with readers. Therefore, rather than allow the ‘evidence’ to be destroyed, as you suggest, I will retain it for the time being.” For that reason, now safely ensconced in a drawer, is a Ziplock bag containing the “pearl” and a partially used tube of Crest, kept as proof of the above. I never heard back from my second email indicating that decision. Of course, if they ever read this, the folks at Proctor and Gamble may invoke the biblical “casting pearls before swine” in reference to me because, after all, for my mental dismay they did offer to send two coupons for free Crest toothpaste! Thus a word of advice: if you ever discover something contaminating a product, even something you put in your mouth, don’t expect a financial windfall. markrushton@abbynews.com

letters Public should decide slots
Here’s a note to the five on council who voted against the opportunity to have the application for additional slots go to public hearings. It’s time you put away your personal so-called moral beliefs
and let the voters of Abbotsford make some decisions. The addition of more slot machines would not only continue to bring in needed funds for charitable and sporting groups in the community, it
would also add to the city’s general funds and save tax dollars for the citizens. With support coming in from out-oftown people willing to put their money into our slot machines, would it not be bet-
ter to have more slots available than to have people go to Langley to add revenue there? At least give us the chance to make our voices heard on matters such as this. Eric Taylor

I try to normalize the hospital experience, including making holidays in the hospital

the best they can be. Through the generosity of people like Keaton de Jonge, holidays in the hospital can feel special to our patients. What I find particularly inspiring in this case is the way Keaton, at such a young age, took the initiative to do something for his community; a goal he works toward all year, not just at Christmas time. An amazing amount of thought and consideration is put into the gifts he selects,
Why is it so hard for people when garbage day is cancelled because of bad weather to just phone and find out when the next pickup is? Instead, they just leave it out by the curb, and the crows and

On behalf of the pediatric staff, I would like to thank Keaton again, and to further thank all or our generous donors this holiday season. Reyna Webb Child Life Specialist, ARHCC

No exceptions for high water consumption The tiered water fees seem like a fair idea. The primary goals for this new rate structure are education and the practice of water conservation. Whether or not residents adopt these goals is entirely up to them. I have read articles about large/
multi family residents and landlords with renters who don’t wish to pay for the resources they need/choose to use. Just because large numbers of people elect to reside together in a single dwelling should not automatically entitle them to
get more water at a cheaper price. One way to make sure that we all do our part in conservation is to make everyone pay a user fee. If the city starts to make exceptions for high occupancy groups, then they will need to
do the same for those that don’t use all ‘their’ water. Logistically, I don’t know how the city would be able to monitor the number of residents in any given home on any given date. Who is going to police every house-

hold? Or, the reverse situation could come into play, when a twoperson family has their grown children return home. Would residents be able to change their status as the need arises? I believe this to be a choice versus conservation issue. Conservation is for all of us, not just
for those that wish to do their part and participate. Water is a shared resource and the choices we collectively make when using this resource will impact us and the generations to follow. Each household should abide by the same rules. If larger numbers of people choose to live
under one roof and more water is being used, then they should be expected to pay for the extra. If they don’t want to pay the higher costs that come with a large ‘family’ then they, not the city, will have to figure out creative alternatives to suit their needs. Judy Craig

Duffield video tops charts Kelsey KLASSEN Abbotsford News
Abbotsford highschool student and Warner Music recording artist Victoria Duffield’s debut single
Shut Up and Dance reached top spot on MuchMusic’s countdown on Jan. 19. Duffield, attending a singing lesson at the time, couldn’t watch the results as they
were revealed live. “My mom called me. I had my phone right beside me when she told me ‘You haven’t been called and Katy Perry is number two.”’
abbotsford tradex Fraser Valley
HOME
She listened as her video started playing over the phone. “I was shocked ... I honestly had never imagined it would hit number one with Katy Perry coming up behind me. Number 29 the first time it was on there, I never thought it would get there. It’s such an honour that so many fans like your video.” She celebrated the unexpected result in Abbotsford with a small gathering of her circle of dance friends and people she credits with helping her get to this point. In the middle of writing exams for courses
at Yale Secondary, the Grade 11 student said that sometimes the stress level gets high, but that her mother helps her keep everything organized and her school is supportive. “It’s balancing different mindsets. In Toronto I’m focused on music videos, rehearsals, interviews, then it’s coming home and switching brains because I have three units of math to figure out,” she laughed. With another year of school on the horizon, Duffield says she plans to finish strongly and then focus on singing and touring.

Kelsey KLASSEN Abbotsford News
The biology and foods students at Abbotsford Christian Secondary School have been working together to focus public attention on some important issues in the area of seafood sustainability. Inspired by the work of Ocean Wise, a nonprofit program associated with the Vancouver Aquarium, the students have researched various sustainability-related issues. As a result of their learning, students and teachers worked together to host an evening where guests had an opportunity to enjoy a seafood feast of sustainable species. They also listened to a series of presentations that focused on current issues that threaten the future of certain food resources. “One of the goals of the project was to explore our role as environmental stewards. Many current harvesting practises are unsustainable and unless we change the way we utilize ocean food resources, we may find that one of our greatest hopes for providing food in the future is compromised,” Rob Bakker, ACS’s Biology 11 teacher stated. Parents, staff, and guests were invited to spend the evening of Thursday, Jan. 26 at the school to enjoy the food, prepared by the students of the Foods 11.

Actions spoke even louder than words for Jasper Moedt and the University of the Fraser Valley men’s basketball team on Saturday evening. Earlier in the week, in an interview with The News, Moedt spoke in frank terms about the confidence he had in his Cascades heading into a high-profile clash with the Trinity Western Spartans at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. Moedt’s message, in a nutshell: We’re bigger, we’re deeper, we’re more talented. We’ll win. That they did – the Cascades put together a tough-minded, focused performance and cruised past the Spartans 88-72. In the aftermath, Moedt admitted he caught flak from UFV coach Barnaby Craddock for his comments – Craddock preferring his players not supply opponents with

But the Cascades locked it down in the first quarter, limiting TWU to just seven points while scoring 19 themselves. “That set the tempo for us,” Craddock noted. “I thought it was a pretty solid defensive effort from our group.” Cascades guard Joel Friesen racked up a game-high 24 points and eight rebounds, while Kyle Grewal scored 17. Calvin Westbrook led TWU with 21 points. Q In the early game, the UFV women’s hoopsters led by as many as 13 points in the second quarter, but

Trinity Western rallied for a 71-59 victory. The Cascades were moving the ball sharply in the early going and had a lot of success attacking the taller Spartans off the dribble, as they built a 28-15 lead. But it was all TWU from there. Afterward, Cascades head coach Al Tuchscherer expressed disappointment that the ball movement that powered his team’s early success evaporated. “We got really selfish with the ball,” he analyzed. “We had an opportunity to put the game away (in the second quarter), and we really just got into ourselves.” Laurelle Weigl paced the Spartans with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while UFV’s Aieisha Luyken and Kayli Sartori tied for team-high scoring honours with 11 points. Q Saturday’s doubleheader marked the first CIS basketball games played at the AESC, and paid attendance was 649 fans. When he announced the event last summer, David Kent, UFV’s sports information and marketing co-ordinator, mused aloud about one day breaking the Canada West attendance record at the 7,000-seat venue. He knows he’s got some work to do, and he’ll have another chance next year, as the AESC has invited the Cascades back in 2013. “We do need a larger crowd in the future, sure,” Kent said. “But I’m very pleased and very happy. We needed to get to the next level with the brand. “I’m as hungry on the marketing side as the athletes are to win a CIS championship.” For more coverage, visit abbynews.com

Heat add all-star D-man
Abbotsford Heat underwent a bit of a roster makeover during the AHL all-star break. Q On Friday, the Calgary Flames furnished the Heat with defensive reinforcements, acquiring Brian Connelly in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks for centre Brendan Morrison. Connelly has been named an AHL all-star each of the past two seasons with the Rockford IceHogs, and is currently second in scoring among AHL defencemen with 36 points in 44 games. Connelly wore his Heat jersey for the first time on Sunday at the AHL all-star skills competition, where he won the fastest skater contest. Q The Heat assigned backup goalie Joni Ortio to his hometown club – TPS Turku of the SM-liiga, Finland’s top league. The rookie keeper posted a 1-4 record in nine appearances for Abbotsford this season.
Ortio’sdeparturecoincideswiththe return to health of Calgary Flames backup Henrik Karlsson, who has been out since early December with a knee injury. He’s likely ticketed for a conditioning stint in Abby after the all-star break. Q On Monday, in a unique transaction, a pair of erstwhile Heat teammates were traded for one another. The Flames sent defenceman John Negrin to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for the rights to winger Akim Aliu, who had been with the Heat on loan since late December. Aliu has four goals and one assist in 13 games with the Heat. Negrin, meanwhile, gets a fresh start after sliding down the Heat’s depth chart. He’ll report to the St. John’s IceCaps, the Jets’ AHL affiliate. Q The Heat open a three-game road trip on Thursday against the Rochester Americans.
