Perry Bruce continued, “Canadian coins prior to 1967, and American coins prior to 1964 are all made with silver, and we have noticed a large increase of customers coming to the Roadshow with coins and cashing them in for their silver value”. So whether you have an old toy car, a broken gold chain, or a Barbie sitting in the closet, bring it down to the Roadshow, they will take a look at it for FREE and it could put money in your pocket!

Jaden Ferrario holds the stick of Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo.
www.sprottshaw.com
Jaden Ferrario, an eightyear-old Abbotsford boy who lives on Eagle Mountain, now owns a piece of hockey history. Jaden was among the throng of frenzied fans at Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final in Vancouver last Friday night. However, he was the only one to return home with the game stick of Canucks’ goaltender Roberto Luongo. At the event with his father Randy, Jaden ran up to the glass after the 1-0 game as Luongo was circling the ice, hoisting his stick skyward while fans cheered his shutout and first-star selection. When it came time to select a lucky fan to get the stick, Canuck mascot, Fin, spotted Jaden through the crowd. Luongo tossed the stick over the glass, but a group of adults began grabbing and pulling at it. Jaden’s mother, Aprille Ferrario, said the situation was quickly resolved by security guards, and Jaden was given his prize shortly after. Jaden plays centre and goaltender for Timbits pre-Atom
hockey at the Abbotsford Training Rink, where he learned to play as a four-yearold. On Sunday during practice, Jaden got a chance to show his teammates the famous stick, the tape tattered and worn with black marks from blocking blistering slapshots. “I’m pretty sure they thought it was pretty cool,” he said grinning. This was his second visit to an NHL playoff game, getting a chance to watch the Canucks against the Los Angeles Kings in the first round last year. But a Stanley Cup final game is even better, especially one as pivotal as Game 5, which sent the Canucks back to Boston for a chance to win it all on Monday night. The stick looms larger than life for Jaden, not least because it’s at least a foot taller than the 4’6” gradeschooler. He isn’t shy about declaring his intent to be an NHL goaltender when he grows large enough to wield the stick. Until then, Jaden intends to keep it in a trophy case. Aprille, however, is a doubtful he’ll let it out of his grasp any time soon.

His given name was John Smeysters, but everyone called him Opa. That’s the way he wanted it. John or Mr. Smeysters just seemed too formal. So it would be Opa, which means grandpa in German and Dutch. He had no official title at W.J. Mouat Secondary, where he was a fixture over the past decade as a jack-of-all-trades volunteer. His passing last Friday – following a nine-month battle with asbestos cancer – rocked the Abbotsford school. Opa was best known as the ubiquitous equipment manager for the Hawks football team, but he was also a frequent chaperone at dances, paymaster at bingo fundraisers, lunchtime supervisor, and occasional social studies lecturer, sharing first-hand accounts of World War II. And to many students, he was a father figure. Asked to summarize Opa’s legacy at Mouat, longtime Hawks football coach Denis Kelly came up empty. “You can’t,” he said, “because it was all-encompassing. “He was probably, for a lot of kids, the most influential person in their lives.” “The things he did, and people didn’t realize.” Steve Goosen, quarterback, Class of 2004, wrote on Opa’s memorial page on Facebook: “What an extraordinary impact you had on so many
One of two men charged with the second-degree murder of Harvey Hans in 2008 has pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. Shavinder “Shevy” Brar, 24, will be sentenced in Chilliwack Supreme Court on July 4. Coaccused Amrit Gill, 23, is set to go to trial on the second-degree murder charge starting June 20. Hans, 18, was fatally stabbed in the neck on May 24, 2008, following a fight between a group of men in front of his family’s home on Ridgeview Drive.

She’s crying. Opa marches over and asks what’s the matter. She was just on the phone with her dad. She hasn’t seen him in a long time
– a child of divorce, apparently – but he was in town that day and was supposed to meet her for lunch. He just called and said he didn’t have the time. Opa asks for the girl’s cell phone, rings her dad, and lights into him. “Are you kidding? You know you’re breaking your daugh-
In the days since Opa’s passing, his family has been inundated by phone calls, text messages, Facebook postings – everyone with a story of how their lives had been touched. When the family lived in Burnaby years ago, the hospital would call Opa when there’d been a bad car accident. He had a rare blood type, O-negative, and he was a regular donor. He’d hop off the couch, drive over and roll up his sleeve. At Mouat, if there was a kid wandering the hallway with no lunch money, Opa would flip him a toonie for a slice of pizza. Elizabeth Smeysters, Opa’s wife of 52 years, said the outpouring of love has been “totally overwhelming.” “We knew he was loved, but to this extreme?” she marveled.
DEATH WAS SUICIDE Police have ruled out homicide as the cause of a death that was reported as suspicious over the weekend. Abbotsford Police received a call just before 9:30 a.m. Saturday that a deceased male had been found in a suite at a residence in the 2200 block of Beaver Street. Major crime unit detectives and forensic identification unit officers then attended the scene to gather evidence and conduct interviews. The Integrated Homicide investigation Unit was brought in, but the death was determined to be a suicide.

’Boarder critically injured 19-year-old went through stop sign, say police Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
A 19-year-old man is in critical condition in hospital after he was struck by a vehicle while riding his skateboard Friday night in Abbotsford. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian
MacDonald said the teen was travelling south on Majestic Crescent, on a downslope, when he apparently went through the stop sign and into traffic on Marshall Road at about 11:15 p.m. MacDonald said a woman travelling west had to steer her vehicle hard to the right and onto Majestic to avoid hitting the skateboarder. But the teen, who lives a few blocks from the area, was then struck by a Ford 150 truck heading east.
MacDonald said the skateboarder was not wearing a helmet. He was treated on scene by Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service and BC Ambulance personnel before being transported to a local hospital. He was subsequently airlifted to another Lower Mainland hospital. MacDonald said the 27-yearold driver of the pickup was sober, remained on scene and cooperated fully with police. He and his passenger were shaken by the collision.
“They’re still in shock,” MacDonald said. Police are continuing their investigation. Last October, a 29-year-old longboarder was killed in a similar accident at the corner of De Cosmos and Dunsmuir Way. The man was heading north down a steep slope on Dunsmuir, which has stop signs, and was struck by a Ford Expedition travelling east on De Cosmos, which has no stop signs.

‘We knew he was loved, but to this extreme?’ From A5
our lives, and you will never be forgotten.” – Tyler Declare, linebacker, Class of 2010 Opa wasn’t the first John Smeysters, nor the last. John – or Johannes in his native Holland – is a
family name that’s bestowed upon the first-born son, a tradition that dates back further than anyone can trace. He’s not even the most well-known John Smeysters in Abbotsford. That would be his grandson, a star Hawks run-
ning back nicknamed Bruiser who loved to run over linebackers. He was the B.C. high school player of the year in 2006. Bruiser was happy and proud to share his Opa with everyone at school, but there were some ground rules. “If they called him
Opa, it was cool,” he said with a chuckle. “But if they said, ‘My Opa,’ then I’d get a little angry. That’s MY Opa!”
“He . . . was truly the heart, soul, wheels and gears that kept that program running so well.” – Greg Spence, defensive end, Class of 2006 Opa volunteered at his grandkids’ elementary and middle schools, then followed them over to Mouat. The Hawks football program had been a powerhouse before Opa got involved, but Kelly said his presence made it truly something special. Maybe a player would be sleepwalking through practice, and wasn’t responding to tough love from
the coaching staff. In a quiet moment, Opa would step up beside him. Later, he’d come to the coaches and tell them to back off. The kid’s parents were going through a divorce. “He made our program successful in many different areas that people never realized if they’re just looking at scores of games,” Kelly said. “He could get things out of the kids that we never could. They confided in Opa like crazy.” Even at 5’5”, Opa was hard to miss, zipping around the football field in his golf cart, laden with equipment and water bottles. On his head was always a maroon Hawks baseball cap covering his grey hair. He wore glasses that
tinted in sunlight, sometimes obscuring the twinkle in his eyes. Around his neck, Opa wore a lanyard with an impossible number of keys. And not just for Mouat buildings – he had the keys for football facilities throughout the Fraser Valley, after working at every training camp under the sun. His contributions were so immense, football coaches from all around were constantly trying to pry him away from Mouat. Simon Fraser University finally succeeded, convincing Opa to join them last summer. “Opa, you are in a ton of great wonderful memories of mine, and you are for sure

going to be missed.” – Austin Teer, quarterback, Class of 2007 Last September, Opa began having trouble breathing. He went in for X-rays, and was told his right lung was full of fluid. He wouldn’t have made it through the weekend. Upon draining the lung, doctors discovered it was riddled with mesothelioma, or asbestos cancer. He’d been exposed to the stuff four decades ago, doing an underground cable-splicing job in downtown Vancouver. After four painful rounds of chemo, the plan was to surgically remove the right lung. But the fast-spreading cancer had already spread to the left lung. At 6:29 a.m. last Friday, he passed away on his couch at home, with his family surrounding him. “We’re mourning, but we’re also proud of the Opa he was for everybody,” Elizabeth said with a smile. memorial Opa’s service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Northview Community Church. Hope for Senate reform There is some irony that as Liberal MLA John Les introduced a bill that might lead to the election of Senators in B.C., Prime Minister Stephen Harper was appointing new members to the upper house. Ironic because it was the Reform Party – precursor to the current Conservatives – that brought the idea of substantial Senate reform closer to reality than ever before. It was, in fact, a key part of the Reform platform: A Senate that was equal, elected, and effective. Although that concept of the “Triple E” Senate has since been tempered by political realities (like reopening the constitutional debate), reform remains a goal for many politicians. Of course, what to do with the Senate has been a Canadian pastime for decades. Many, including the opposition NDP see little use for this “house of sober, second thought” and would rather see it abolished. Other see it as a chance to improve
the democratic process in Canada. John Les is one of those. “I think by far the majority of people would prefer to elect a Senate,” Les says. He’s right. For too long the Canadian Senate has had all the appearance of a private club, where its promise of lifetime membership was seen as the ultimate reward for party fidelity. It has been political tradition for the Prime Minister of the day to stock the Senate with selections who were sympathetic to the governing party’s views. Prime Minster Harper faced that same accusation when he recently appointed three new members to Senate – all Conservative candidates who were defeated in the recent federal election. Still, there is hope. It is expected that the Conservatives will introduce changes that will give provinces greater say over how candidates are chosen. The Private Member’s Bill introduced by MLA Les, serves as an important step toward that necessary reform. – Black Press
This honour is not misplaced Mark
Rushton On the
Other Hand There are times in this writing business when it is difficult to adhere to the writ that accuracy must prevail. Presenting facts is important, for only then can you back up an argument, but ensuring those “facts” are in fact accurate causes much mental tremor. For instance, driving back from Vancouver on Sunday I caught, at the last second, out of the corner of my eye a big new sign proclaiming the route the Highway of Heroes. When the designation was announced recently, I thought it a good and worthy honour to those who serve our country, whether at home or abroad. The men and women who go into harm’s way to protect and support our way of life, who give their lives to bring freedom and peace to nations
torn apart by terrorism, fascism, religious fervor, and racial genocide have earned our recognition and appreciation. Those who oppose war may not agree with the ‘glorification’ of conflict, but no one should condemn the valour of soldiers, sailors and airmen who, at their nation’s behest, go forth to try to make the world a better place. And it is with that premise that these young men and women deserve to be recognized. Those engaged in combat do not create the conflicts; that is done by leadership – by one or many – who rarely, if ever, actually participate in the battles. So to designate a short section of highway, from the Port Mann Bridge to Abbotsford, in their honour is most worthy. Even more appropriate would be, by federal government decree, extension of that designation to the full route of the Trans Canada Highway. The Highway of Heroes, from sea to shining sea. We owe those who gave their lives no less.
However, in putting up signs declaring our respect and gratitude for those who have given so much, care must be taken. And that brings me back to my accuracy reference above. As noted, I only caught a fleeting
For your past deeds, and for keeping alive the memory of those who give and gave so much ... thank you. glance of the sign as I barrelled past at well in excess of 100 km/h. But my critical eye registered what I perceived to be an anomaly in that microsecond. Prominent in the corner of the sign was a declaration to “3rd C.A.V.”. Horror of horrors I thought – the sign displays a huge and unacceptable error. My first impression was that the
declaration should read “3rd Cav.” or even “3rd CAV” without the dots between letters because “Cav” is also short for Cavalry, the soldiers who in this day and age drive tanks and other armoured vehicles instead of horses. Accuracy, for columnists, and sign painters alike is important, thus I was compelled to determine who was wrong. And I discovered, thanks to Google, that there truly is a 3rd C.A.V., and it refers to a B.C. division of the Canadian Army Veteran’s motorcycle unit – a group who participated in the launch of the new highway designation, and who through their own contributions, are more than worthy of name recognition on our Highway of Heroes. For your past deeds, and for keeping alive the memory of those who give and gave so much . . . thank you. I will, whenever I drive the route, honour your contribution and those of every other Canadian hero. And with this column, I suggest our Member of Parliament press the federal government to extend this honour the full length of Highway 1.

Undecided on HST
Re: Andrew Holota column, June 11. I read with some interest your observations on our dilemma not of our making. Both my wife and I are retired, middle income, no mortgage, but still feel we are being constantly squeezed by increasing costs. When on a fixed income, one must always weigh what it is they are going to spend money on from what is left from our disposable income. We were around when a former prime minister promised to eliminate a tax if elected only to change his mind. I accept the fact that this HST is a tax that will generate more cash for the provincial government than the PST, and I also know that it will be the taxpayer who will fund those expenditures, which seem to increase every year more than the cost of living of which my pension does not. Recently the house in Victoria sat for 24 days, of which each and every member of the political parties claimed or could claim $60 per day for meals, no receipts required. I guess the issue for us, is our tax dollars being spent wisely? If you look at our total taxes and fees paid in British Columbia, perhaps we are not getting the bargain our elected officials tell us. So what can we do – we have reduced our restaurant dining, movie nights are now a thing of the past, no longer subscribe to the Sun, and on and on. When the mayor or TransLink, or any taxing authority increases our cost, that money only comes from our disposable income, so in Mission we have become Wal-Mart shoppers. I do wish we had a nice warm fuzzy feeling about this, but we were not told the truth, and the same players remain and ask us to believe and trust them, not sure why we should. We are still both undecided on the HST issue.

POLICE CHALLENGE The 21st annual Abbotsford Police Challenge Run took place on Saturday to raise funds for the Special Olympics of B.C. The event offered both a 10-km challenge route and a 5-km fun run. There were approximately 700 registrants. Last year, the run saw around 600 participants. In addition, participation from local schools, law enforcement and Special Olympic athletes doubled from last year’s event. The fastest runner in the 10-km challenge did the route in 35 minutes, while the 5-km run was completed in 18 minutes. JOHN MORROW
Pilot lands in field
A pilot made an emergency landing in a rural field in Abbotsford Sunday morning after his aircraft experienced mechanical difficulties. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the 62-year-old pilot from Delta left from Boundary Bay Airport at about 9:30 a.m. in a Cherokee 6 aircraft and landed at Chilliwack Airport. After leaving Chilliwack and heading back towards Boundary Bay, the plane began having problems. “At a certain point, the engine cut out and he was unable to restart it,” MacDonald said. The pilot then made a “soft landing” in a grassy field in the 6100 block of Mt. Lehman Road. The pilot and the two passengers on board were not injured. The plane suffered some damage to its propellor, landing gear and fuselage, and a mechanical assessment is being done.

As Dustin HuttonAlcorn of Abbotsford marched in silence and held hands with the people on either side of him, he felt triumphant – as if he and his companions were reclaiming the area. The group of 60 walked from the site of the railway station at the Auschwitz I concentration camp to the Birkenau death camp. They marched in memory of those who lost their lives because of hate and intolerance, and for the heroes who fought for freedom. Dustin walked in memory of his grandfather, William F.E. Hutton, who had been a sergeant with the Canadian Armed Forces in the Second World War. It was because of him that the 20-yearold had grown up with a yearning to make a difference in the world. His grandfather would talk about the war and the atrocities of the Holocaust, telling a young Dustin that it all stemmed from people not liking other people. Dustin didn’ t want the world to be that way. When he was in high school at Abbotsford Collegiate, he joined as many groups as he could to help his school and community, including the Abbotsford Youth Commission and the Kiwanis Club’s Key Club. He went on to attend Carleton University in Ottawa, studying political science and human rights. Last fall, he participated in Holocaust Education Week, and that was when he lear ned about the March of Remembrance and Hope. The annual event brings together 60 university and college students from across Canada for a two-day trip to Germany, followed by a five-day visit to Poland each May. While there, participants visit locations related to the Holocaust, includ-

modern world. “I think a lot of people ... have kind of put (the Holocaust) to the side and have not really thought about the lessons that can be learned,” he said. The group travelled with two Holocaust survivors. One was a woman whose family was taken to a concentration camp when she was eight years old. Her mother smuggled a pair of high-heeled shoes along for the girl to wear so that she would appear older, as younger children were usually taken to the gas chambers. She lost her entire family, except for her mom. The other survivor was a man whose family, including his twin sister, was taken to Majdanek. He was separated from them all, and his last memory of his sister is seeing her long blond braid as she ran to catch up to their mother. He was the only survivor in his family. Dustin was also impacted by the number of personal belongings that the Nazis kept of their victims and which were displayed at the museum in Auschwitz: suitcases, eyeglasses, shoes, clothing, and human hair that had been shorn off and was woven into items such as blankets. As he looked at these items and walked through the area, he was overwhelmed by the inhumanity of it all. “I was trying to come to grips with the notion that there are people who could do this to other people.” Now back home in Abbotsford before returning to his fourth year of university, Dustin is intent on sharing his experiences with others. He believes there are parallels today in Canada with the prejudice and intolerance that fuelled the Holocaust – for example, with attitudes about homosexuality and race. He will participate again this fall in Holocaust Education Week, and hopes for a career in human rights, advocacy or politics.

THE CHALLENGE: Twenty UFV students have been divided into 10 teams. Each team is associated with a corporate partner in the community. They’ve been given the task of creating a marketing plan for their business with the goal of reaching the 18-to35-year-old demographic in Abbotsford, creating a short video to be showcased at abbynews.com, and a full-page advertisement. There will also be a mini-task of promoting an event for AESC.
THE FINALE: The three last teams will be invited to the grand finale at Finnegan’s Pub on Monday, June 20 at 7 p.m. where the winner will be named.
FACEBOOK: Each team has its own Facebook page, accessible by visiting The Abbotsford News Facebook site at facebook. com/myabbynews. From there, voters can link to each competitor’s page or link to The Intern fan page.
THE ELIMINATION: Votes can be entered five times a day, at abbynews. com. (Click on the Intern banner ad located in Entertainment), and as often as desired with print ballots from the

This is one way of giving a chance to a team that has been fired. AESC will be making their decision this week and all will be revealed June 20 at the finale at Finnegan’s Pub.

Fresh Canvas Spa on old Charisma Gallery Site Will Continue to Support Local Artists When Charisma Gallery closed its doors in July of 2010, many artists and residents were sad to see it go. So when Sukhi Gill & family decided to open a new spa on the site, they wanted to honour the long-standing gallery and keep a connection going with the arts community. “Art and Spa are both about feeling good.” Says Sukhi Gill. “ Fresh Canvas Spa will offer beauty and wellness services to the local community, while also offering artists a place to show and sell their work.” Rod Bishop, retired owner of Charisma Gallery, is pleased with the new enterprise. “I feel this is a unique opportunity to showcase our local artists. I wish Fresh Canvas Spa and the Gill family all the best in supporting the arts.” While experiencing services such as facials, massages, manicures & pedicures, waxing & threading, laser hair removal and healing laser therapy, Fresh Canvas customers can also enjoy the work of artists displayed in areas of the establishment. Original pieces from the following featured artists are now on display:
• James Wiens from Chilliwack • William Allister late of Tsawwassen • Pieter Molenaar from White Rock
SPA For spa appointments or gift certificates contact us at:
604-852-8929 33341 South Fraser Way, Abbotsford
You are welcome to visit the Spa to view these original pieces of art. The art theme is more than skin deep at Fresh Canvas. “Our tagline is ‘Every body is a work of art.’ says Sukhi. “ When our customers walk out the door, we want them to feel physically and creatively refreshed.” Fresh Canvas is a family-run spa dedicated to rejuvenating the body and spirit for all Abbotsford and area residents. It offers a clean and professional ambiance, the services of highly experienced and dedicated staff for its patrons, and an alternative venue for artists to showcase their work. Interested artists may contact Pam Sahsi at 604-307-0567 or e-mail pam@freshcanvasspa.com. Anyone looking for a refreshing spa experience is invited to visit Fresh Canvas Spa located at the old Charisma Gallery site at 33341 South Fraser Way in Abbotsford.

Engineered to embody “more power, less fuel”
“The 2011 Toyota Tacoma embodies the never-quit attitude and performance that defines Toyota’s reputation for building trucks that tame the most challenging terrain and climates,” said Warren Orton, Director at Toyota Canada Inc. “And with a four-speed automatic transmission available on Tacoma 4x4 Access Cab four-cylinder, Canadians will find a Toyota Tacoma that offers the power and performance that meets their needs - backed by Toyota’s 70 years of truck-building experience.” A surprisingly powerful yet fuel efficient 2.7 Litre 4-cylinder engine is fitted to four models: the 4x2 Access Cab in 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic, and the 4x4 Access Cab with a 5-speed manual and new 4-speed automatic. This engine delivers 159 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque, and a 1,587 KG (3,500 LB) towing rating. For additional power and towing capability, the proven 4.0 Litre V6 is fitted to four models: The 4x4 Access Cab V6 and 4x4 Double Cab V6 in 6-speed manual and 5-speed automatic models. This engine generates 236 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. Tacoma 4x4 models feature a convenient one-touch, part-time four-wheel-drive, featuring an automatic disconnecting differential, and two-speed transfer case. All models ride on a rugged front suspension featuring

a doublewishbone design with gas shocks, coil springs and stabilizer bar and a leaf spring rear suspension with gas shocks. These combine to deliver excellent handling for a variety of driving duties with a comfortable ride. Every Tacoma is fitted with a generous suite of active and passive safety systems: • Standard features include Vehicle Stability Control (VSC)[1], traction control with anti-lock braking system, Brake Assist (BA)[2], and electronic brakeforce distribution technologies. • Six airbags (dual-stage driver and front passenger air bags, front seat mounted side airbags, and rollsensing front and rear head/side curtain airbags). • Active front headrests with whiplash protection, three point lap and shoulder belts, pretensioners and force limiters for the front seatbelts and anchor points for child-restraint seats. Toyota offers two cab styles for the 2011 Tacoma. Tacoma 4x2, Tacoma 4x4, and Tacoma 4x4 V6 models are fitted with the four-person Access Cab. The Tacoma 4x4 V6 may also be ordered with the larger Double Cab with full-size rear doors and room for five adults.

The Abbotsford Heat are in the market for a new head coach, after Jim Playfair accepted an associate coaching position with the Phoenix Coyotes on Monday. “We’re happy for him,” said Lane Sweeting, a member of the Heat’s local ownership group. “We very much respect his passion for the game, and for Abbotsford
and the Heat. We hate to lose him, but just like with our players, we know the AHL is a development league for coaches and referees as well. We wish him all the best.” Calgary Flames general manager Jay Feaster, in a press release, said the NHL parent club will begin the process of identifying and hiring a new bench boss for Abbotsford immediately.

Playfair was en route to Phoenix, and was unavailable for comment prior to Monday’s press deadline. Playfair, the only head coach the Heat have ever known, piloted the team to a 77-61-9-13 record over their first two American Hockey League campaigns in Abbotsford. He steered the Heat to the Calder Cup playoffs in 2009-10, where they rallied from a 3-1 deficit to stun the Rochester Americans in the first round. They fell in six games to the Hamilton Bulldogs in the North Division final. Last season, the Heat were the youngest team in the AHL, and narrowly missed the playoffs with a 38-32-4-6 record. Playfair authored perhaps the most memorable moment in Heat history on Mar. 27, 2010, when he blew his top on referee Jamie Koharski dur-

Eagles bronzed at provincials
The Mennonite Educational Institute tennis team brought home a bronze medal from the recent B.C. AA high school championships in Langley. The Eagles went 4-1 at the provincials, with their lone loss coming against topseeded Collingwood of West Vancouver, which went on to win its fourth consecutive B.C. title. MEI coach Ron Peters was proud of his team’s performance. “Our team has three tournament players, while Collingwood has twelve, he said. “Our goal this year was to finish in the top three and our kids played their hearts out accomplishing that. The Eagles, seeded sixth heading in, defeated Sir Charles Tupper, St. Michael’s University and Okanagan Mission in pool play, before suffering an 8-3 loss to Collingwood in the semifinals. MEI bounced back to beat Sa-Hali of Kamloops 6-5 for the bronze. Contributing to the Eagles’ podium finish were Anthony Iliev, Mikayla Marazzi,

Cards come through in clutch Dan KINVIG
Abbotsford News
Given the Abbotsford Cardinals’ precarious perch on the playoff bubble, Sunday’s doubleheader against the White Rock Tritons was getting into must-win territory. The Cards got the job done, sweeping the Tritons by scores of 4-3 and 2-1 to jump up from 10th place into sole possession of the eighth and final playoff spot in the B.C. Premier Baseball League standings with a 13-16 record. Both wins came in extra innings. In the opener, White Rock scored a run in the top of the eighth to snap a 2-2 tie, but the Abby squad rallied to win on bases-loaded singles by Matt Buse and Zach Cardoso in the bottom of the inning. Cardoso, the Cards’ centre fielder, suffered a separated shoulder in the second game of the day after diving for a fly ball. But his teammates came through in his absence, as Alex Massier’s single drove in Buse with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. “Pitching-wise, we were great,” Cards coach Andy Rempel said, lauding the play of starters Steven Federau and

Mariners topple Timbers

Dan KINVIG
Share a little magic with a young person
Abbotsford News
Saturday’s date with the defending national champion Portland U23 Timbers didn’t seem like a promising occasion for the Magnuson Ford Mariners as they searched for their first win of the season. But the local Premier Development League soccer side scored a major upset, blanking the Timbers 1-0 at Bateman Park. Mariners coach Ian Knight was quick to note it wasn’t a dominant performance by any means – the local side found itself under intense pressure for much of the match. But Andrew Kowan posted the clean sheet, and the backline of Colton O’Neill, James Farenhorst, Brent Wantke and Cody Strelau performed admirably under duress. Sasa Plavsic got the decisive goal in the first half, when his low drive found the bottom corner. “It wasn’t pretty at times, but there’s nothing wrong with an ugly win,” Knight noted with a chuckle, after his team improved to 1-3-2 on the season. “In all honesty, it wasn’t some of our best play this season. For long periods, we were under a lot of pressure. But we got the goal that made the difference on the day.” The Mariners’ next three games are on the road. They’re back at JOHN MORROW Abbotsford News Bateman Park on Wednesday, June 29 for a 7 p.m. date with the Washington Danfi Parker of the Abbotsford Mariners battles for the ball with a Portland Timbers opponent.
