KISS rocked the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre last night. The event kicked off with a block party outside of the arena. Lead singer/bassist Gene Simmons (above), Paul Stanley, Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer are known for their flamboyant outfits and face paint. The popular rock band, which has been performing since 1973, is halfway through a North American tour that will also take them through northern B.C. For more coverage see abbynews.com

Claiming that gravel mine licences often expand beyond the original application, a digitally altered aerial photo being distributed by a quarry opponent suggests what the western summit face of Sumas Mtn. might look like over 100 years of permit duration, if the mine is approved, and expands across the two separate sites presently proposed (left).
Before and after quarry? Mine opponent sends out pictures, letters Ashley WRAY Abbotsford News
Images of how Sumas Mountain could look if a current rock quarry application passes will soon be mailed to local government officials, paired with a letter of concern. Sumas Mountain resident Walter Neufeld recently hired a plane to fly over the mountain’s summit where there is a pending gravel mine
application to quarry 310 acres. If passed, it could potentially block public access to Sumas Mountain Regional Park, and would hamper plans to convert the region to recreational green space. “People will be shocked with what’s going on up there – they’re basically removing our mountain tops,” said Neufeld, who is also a memContinued on A6

Abbotsford Police Const. Steve Kern would like to meet and thank the citizens who helped hold back an agitated crowd during the Stanley Cup riot, as he and civilian medical personnel assisted an injured man.
Heroes sought Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News
An Abbotsford Police officer who was alone and facing a menacing crowd during Vancouver’s Stanley Cup riot wants to meet and personally thank the members of the public who put themselves in harm’s way to assist him. Const. Steve Kern also wants to see recognition for the offduty medical personnel who put their skills to work during the riot. The Abbotsford Police Department is asking the seven “heroic citizens” who were associated with Kern that night to come forward. Kern was part of the Lower Mainland Tactical Troop on June 15, working crowd control. He was part of a fourperson team of police officers from detachments across the region, stationed at Granville and Robson Streets. They were wearing traffic control vests, and in meet-and-greet mode. “At the beginning of the evening, and in previous games, people were really friendly, high-fiving, wanting to get pictures taken with you and talk about the hockey
games,” said Kern. By the end of the second period, with the Vancouver Canucks on their way to a 4-0 loss to the Boston Bruins, the mood of the crowd was already surly. The medical member of their team was summoned away, leaving three officers to control the busy corridor. The officers heard of a medical emergency on Robson Street. They arrived on the scene to find a man unconscious, bleeding from an obvious head inju-

However, they found it difficult to do their work, because members of the crowd were taking pictures and video of the victim, bumping and jostling them. “People were sticking cameras right in their faces and snapping pictures,” said Kern. “We needed to take control of that situation and give them the space they needed.” The trio of police officers did that, and two more off-duty
nurses arrived on scene to assist. Just as the group began making progress in keeping people clear of the injured man, and initiating basic medical care, another victim was reported further ahead. That person had suffered serious stab wounds. Two police officers moved through the mob to the second victim, leaving Kern to support the doctor and nurses. The crowd because increasingly aggressive, making antipolice comments. When police used tear gas to start clearing Granville, more increasingly agitated people moved toward Kern and the group. “They were very threatening,” said Kern. “They were upset they had been tear gassed, and they were blaming me for it.” Kern was coping with tear gassing effects himself, which he described as “moderate.” “I’ve experienced it before,” said the 19-year veteran, “so I’m able to work through it.” At the moment when violence against the police officer seemed inevitable, three people stepped out and formed a wall in front of Const. Kern, the doctor, the nurses and the unconscious man. The trio was comprised of a husband and wife and a stocky, muscular man. The three physically and verbally made it clear to the Continued on A7

ber of Fraser Valley Regional District Citizens Association, a group that helps communities organize a more coordinated response to gravel mining applications. “The initial size of this application is huge but what makes this application most disturbing is its potential for expansion. Experience has shown that the initial gravel mine permit application is a means to unlimited expansion.” Neufeld displayed a number of his photographs at a recent public information meeting at Abbotsford’s Straiton Hall, organized by the Recreation
Sites and Trails Branch B.C. His images illustrate the mountain’s summit before the application, and a digitally altered version of what it would look like if the quarry was to pass. He also portrayed the “known tenured land holdings exploitable by the permit applicant, estimated at between 1,500 to 2,000 acres, over the 100-year permit duration.” Approximately 60 people attended the meeting to voice their opposition, calling the area “our Stanley Park.” The city has also expressed its opposition, however, it ultimately can’t block approval since the land is in Area G of the Fraser Valley Regional District and
access is provincially regulated through the Ministry of Energy and Mines. On May 13, city council voted to instruct staff to prepare a letter to the province registering the “strongest possible objection” to the quarry. The application was made by Dave Taylor of 266531 BC Ltd., the owner of Westland Tractor Company in Kamloops. Taylor has not returned the News’ calls. The public has until July 9 to comment on the application. Neufeld urges residents to speak up, as “letter-writing is very critical at this stage.” He suggests writing to local government officials.
Downtown fire on Sunday night Commercial building damaged
Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service is investigating a fire in a commercial building on South Fraser Way on Sunday night at approximately 11 p.m. The building at 33827 South Fraser Way is known as The Valley Building. It was vacant, and available for lease. The fire started in the basement, and firefighters were able to keep it contained there. There was smoke damage throughout the structure. Firefighters and police were working Monday afternoon to determine the cause of the fire, and whether it should be considered suspicious. An eyewitness reported seeing men at the rear of the property minutes before the fire broke out, and noticed a smashed window at the front of the store.

aggressors that they would not be allowing anyone in the rescue team to be attacked or interfered with. “That made all the difference in breaking the tension, said Kern. The couple eventually left to bring more police officers to the location, so the unconscious patient could be extracted safely. “As a result of the collective actions of these seven heroic citizens, none of the members of the rescue group were injured, and the unconscious man was eventually taken to hospital, said an APD press release. “It’s incredible when you see civilians get involved, said Kern. Rioters are being identified in the media, and they apologize, say-
ing that they got caught up in the moment and did the wrong thing. “These people got caught up in the moment and did the right thing, Kern said. That night is a stain on the memory for the many despicable things people did – fighting, looting and destroying cars and stores. But Kern will look at it differently. “I will take away from it that, when things looked bleakest, people helped, said Kern. “I would like to see them come forward and get recognition for what they did for me and the injured man. I would love to meet these people, and give them my own thank-you. They can contact Const. Ian MacDonald at 604-864-4721.

Whom do you trust? As the campaign for voters’ hearts and minds in the provincial HST referendum reaches its final stage, most of us seem to have heavy hearts. And according to a recent Angus Reid poll, some of us have such clouded minds we’re not even clear on what the basic question means any more. It can’t be doubted that some of the confusion comes from a chorus of raised voices – not to mention stick figures – who accost us daily. Do we trust Fight HST organizers Bill Vander Zalm and Chris Delaney? They play well to the emotions, particularly locally (a point that Finance Minister Kevin Falcon, an Ocean Park resident and Surrey-Cloverdale MLA might want to give closer attention). But while their successful grassroots initiative resulted in the referendum in the first place, they have not been immune to charges of misleading the public on facts. Neither has the provincial NDP,
which has launched a campaign to extinguish the HST and return to the GST-plus-PST structure. Do we believe their claim that going back to the GST/PST will help balance the budget sooner, as well as save taxpayers $2 billion? Falcon has attacked NDP Leader Adrian Dix for faulty math, saying the 10 per cent HST rate promised by the Liberals by 2014 is clearly less than the 12 per cent GST/PST rate championed by Dix. Falcon also wonders where the money will come from to “fix the $3-billion hole extinguishing the HST would create?” – possibly forgetting that, for taxpayers, this begs the question of who actually dug the hole. The average taxpayer might be forgiven for wondering if, like Diogenes, one must venture forth with a lamp seeking someone who will give us a straightforward – and honest – answer. – Black Press
Appreciating Kapuskasing, and others Mark
Rushton On the
Other Hand Funny how small things trigger memories. A few days ago there was a news story about the prime minister weighing in on the importance of Canada continuing to mine, refine and produce asbestos to ship around the world, despite the assumed health risks related to asbestos in any of its forms. I suspect that, in addition to the economic benefits of mining the product, Mr. Harper was also contemplating the potential favourable voter support of the Quebec community where the asbestos is located. Health, politics, economic contributions and other potential pluses or minuses, however, had absolutely nothing to do with the memory jogging that the story inspired. What did get my overstuffed-with-trivia mind going back in time was the name of the community: Thetford Mines. That
was, I suddenly recalled, one of the many towns that were revealed during a newspaper contest back when I was a kid. I don’t remember what the weekly quizzes were exactly, but I think they related to lists of towns across Canada in which the letters were all jumbled up and you had to decipher the names and locate where the communities were. It was interesting, and my father and I looked forward each week to the Saturday paper that contained a new list of names from across the country. How else would I always remember such relative inconsequentials as Kapuskasing, Temiskaming and Timmins. Or Goose Bay, Gander and Guelph. The contest made me think about Canada, and fostered a huge interest in geography . . . good thing since it was one of the few subjects in high school that provided me with better than passing grades. What seemed trivial then, and in some respects continues to be, since within this country I have never been east of Calgary save as a small child. Lots of other places on this continent and across the waters have felt my footfalls, but most of Canada is to me an unexplored landscape, its towns and cites, beauty and blight, known
only from those quizzes long ago or from TV, film and magazines. And I regret that greatly. I would love to take a driving tour to explore this great land from sea to sea, to see Newfoundland and Labrador first hand, to explore the tundra and the waving wheat fields along our southern border; to battle mosquitoes in northern Ontario and sit at a sidewalk table in Quebec City.
Part of the Best Nation on Earth But time and money have never seemed to arrive with appropriate togetherness, and over the years commitments have conspired to generally keep me within the confines, wonderful though they are, of British Columbia. While we always figured out the names of the jumbled cities and towns across the nation, and weekly mailed off our successes, I don’t ever recall there being a material prize for all the correct answers.
The real gift however, was an abiding interest in, and future acquired knowledge of, the diversity of geography of this vast nation. And developed from that was a admiration of country to the point that a Canadian flag always flies at my home and, through passing on that patriotism, flags also fly at the homes of my children. Thus, on Friday, when we annually recognize the birth of our nation I am able to travel, at least in my mind’s eye, to all those places that newspaper competition instilled forever in the memory banks. Though the opportunity for a national tour has not yet arrived, there is still an atlas in the bookcase, and looking through it demonstrates the enormity and potential strength we have in Canada. Remember, on July 1, that we are much more than hockey fans, rioters or scoffers of anywhere other than, as our previous premier used to say, “The Best Place on Earth”. We are part of the Best Nation on Earth. Be proud on Friday, and in your own way salute all we are, and all we have become, warts and all.

Licence criteria is unfair
Canadians are no doubt happy to hear that they will no longer be paying the full bill for each vote political parties obtain. That is indeed good news, though why is it necessary to do this on a gradual basis? If it’s worth cutting off the expense, why not make the cutting complete now? Another unnecessary bill that has been funded by taxpayers is the shameful annual billion-dollar gift to the CBC. Why is this to continue? If political parties ought to fund their own expenses, surely the CBC and other news outlets ought to do the same. Seems to me a majority gover nment should have the courage and wisdom to act toward saving citizens these totally unnecessary contributions. If not, on what basis should we contribute to any political party? Mark B. Toth
My husband has never had an accident, or a ticket, he has had some health issues over the years, but they are all behind him now. However, as is the case with many people, he gets anxious about testing, and can freeze up. As a result, the necessary ‘pass’ fell short and he lost his licence. This seems to be a very unfair criteria,
and also that there is no second chance, as people going for their first licence are allowed. I have been told by many people that there are a lot of complaints being heard, as even our MLA’s office admitted to me. It is ruining our last years, and makes a man feel totally finished. It’s awful.

What was originally reported to Abbotsford Police as a home invasion shooting is now suspected to have been a self-inflicted wound. A 38-year-old man is in hospital with non-life threatening injuries to his hand and leg following the shooting at a basement suite in the 3200 block of Cheam Drive at 8:50 a.m. on Sunday. A female caller to 911 indicated to police that two unknown people had entered the suite and shot her boyfriend. However, after investigation, police said the incident was actually the result of an accidental discharge of a firearm. A handgun was seized and the investigation continues. It has not been determined whether the injuries were caused by two shots, or a single bullet.

If the wattage of a smile could be harnessed, Nathan Lieuwen could have powered the Las Vegas Strip on Saturday. After twice being passed over in the NHL entry draft, the 19-year-old goalie from Abbotsford finally had his name called. The Buffalo Sabres picked him in the sixth round, 167th overall. “To go through this process twice before and not have my name show up, it makes it extra special,” enthused Lieuwen, who plays for the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League. “I definitely have a different perspective on this draft than most others.” In a perfect world, Lieuwen would have

the previous summer. But in January of 2009, Lieuwen sustained a concussion – his second in 16 months – after a collision in the crease. The 6’5” keeper was passed over in the NHL’s talent lottery, and was overlooked once again in 2010 as the effects of the concussion lingered.
Last fall, Lieuwen came into training camp symptom-free, and put together a dream season. He backstopped the Ice to a WHL title, earning playoff MVP honours. As his third crack at the NHL draft approached, Lieuwen was confident he’d have opportunities in free agency if his name wasn’t called. When it happened,
it was a rewarding moment for a prospect who had been written off, but persevered. “There’s no easy steps, especially with the ride that I’ve been on,” he said. “Everything’s been worked for, and I’ve had to be patient. I think I’m better because of it.” For more with Lieuwen, visit abbynews.com

Pint-size family hauler makes sense for many reasons Based on the recently introduced Cruze compact sedan, the Orlando show car carries Chevrolet’s signature design language into a new vehicle segment. Cues include a two-tier grille, expressive headlamps that flow into the front fenders and muscular fender forms that wrap around the wheels. “The Orlando suggests a possible addition to Chevrolet’s global product portfolio, while adhering to its mission of offering value, quality and fuel efficiency,” said Ed Peper, GM North America vice president, Chevrolet. “It offers adaptable seating, more than expected interior room and a powerful yet economical powertrain – features that were designed to suit a variety of needs in different markets.” Fuel-efficient power for the Orlando show car comes from a 2.0L turbo-diesel that generates 150 horsepower (112 kW) and a strong 235 lb.-ft. of torque (320 Nm). The small-displacement fourcylinder engine combines excellent fuel efficiency with surprising performance, thanks to high torque available across the rpm band. The car-based architecture of the Orlando – the hallmark of a true crossover – further contributes to the vehicle’s efficiency with lower overall mass and better aerodynamics. Inside, the five-door Orlando is designed to meet the needs of families and those who need plenty of seating capacity. It has reconfigurable, theater-style seating in three rows that comfortably accommodate up to seven occupants. The seats in rows two and three conveniently fold flat into the floor, whenever load carrying becomes a priority. A long, 108.6-inch (2,760 mm) wheelbase, along with wide front and rear tracks, enhance the interior’s spaciousness. Those dimensions also support a smooth, compliant driving experience, with assistance from a strut-type front suspension, compound crank rear suspension and a speed-sensitive, electric power steering system.

Dennis (Denny) Robert Ross May 19, 1950 – May 11, 2011 It is with love and sadness that the family of Dennis Robert Ross announces his sudden and unexpected passing at home in Abbotsford just one week before his 61st birthday. Denny was born May 19, 1950 at the old Cottage Hospital and lived most of his life in Abbotsford. Denny was a fourth generation descendant of local pioneers Philip and Grace Ross and Edmond and Elizabeth White. Denny was the oldest of six children born to Robert and Helen Ross. He is survived and missed by his parents Bob and Helen, sisters Marilyn (Harvey) Goodwin, Elaine (Hans) Visser, Donna (Robert) Simpson, Shirley (Ken) Jansen and brother Darrell (Ruth) Ross. Uncle Denny is also survived by his nieces and nephews Michelle (Mike) Appeldoorn, Mark (Kara) Goodwin, Denise (Brad) Blades, Tiffany (Ryan) Biela, Wendy Dombrowski, Sheldon (Michelle) Visser, Darren (Amanda) Simpson, Kirk (Sheena) Jansen, Ryan and Clayton Ross. Denny was great uncle to Kurtis, Tyson, Krystal and Allison Appeldoorn, Wyatt Goodwin, Brayden and Cole Blades, Keegan Biela, Shaelee and Chase Dombrowski, Blake Simpson, Preston and Alianna Jansen. Denny is survived by aunts and uncles Fae Ross, Bev (Phil) Evans and Wayne (June) Ross and many cousins in the Ross, Thompson, Masse, Johnson, Gibb and Chevalley families. He was predeceased by grandparents Ray and Edith Ross and John and Eva White and aunts and uncles Walter Ross, Delores and Al Masse, Sonny Johnson and June and Dave Thompson. Denny attended McMillan Elementary School and Abbotsford Junior and Senior High Schools. The Ross family was involved in the car business and Denny developed a passion for race cars at an early age. He made life-long friendships through slot car racing in his parent’s basement, street racing on Sumas Prairie and custom car racing at Mission Raceway. He was a big fan of NHRA Drag Racing and attended many events in California, Washington and British Columbia. Stereo equipment and electronics of all kinds interested him and he collected a large variety of them over the years. Denny was a member of the Abbotsford Curling Club and played on some winning League Championship Teams. He was also part of a team that scored an ‘8-ender’ in league play. Denny was a drywall finisher and a 40 year member of the International Union of Painters & Allied Trades DC 38. Denny was a kind, true and loyal friend. He will be greatly missed and remembered by all who knew and loved him. A celebration of Denny’s life will be held on Sunday, July 10th 2 – 4 P.M. at The Rancho, 35110 Delair Road, Abbotsford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

We are so very sad to announce the death of Mike Llewellyn Lewis on June 23, 2011, following complications after surgery for cancer. He was a staunch Welshman, a teacher, sports fan (rugby in particular) and coach. He taught Social Studies at Abby Junior for 31 years while involving himself in the Swim, Karate and Rotary clubs. He was a founding member of the Abbotsford Rugby Club, not only playing for the club and sitting on the executive, but becoming the coach in 2001, and in 2002, he and Mark Ferguson led the Club to the BC 1st Division Championships. He was so proud of this accomplishment He will be sorely missed by Anne, Susan, Jason and his beloved granddaughter, Bailey Fennellow. He will also be much missed by the Lewis clan back in the U.K. His sister Helen, brothers Winsor and Martin, his son Rob, his niece and nephews, and many cousins. He was a no fuss kind of man and at his request there will be no formal funeral but a small gathering of family and close old friends, at 4 pm, Monday July 4th at 32301 Atwater Crescent, Abbotsford... STOBBE Mary (nee Froese) On June 24, 2011 in her 86th year, Mary Stobbe, passed away peacefully at Menno Home in Abbotsford, BC. She was the oldest of 12 children, and was born in Steinfeld, Russia on August 28, 1925. When Mary was 2 months old, her family immigrated to Canada, and made their home in Sperling, Manitoba. In 1946 they moved to Abbotsford, BC. She married Henry Stobbe on November 10, 1953 and together they had 4 children. Ron Stobbe, Sharon (John) Hildebrandt, Glenn (Dora) Stobbe and Kathleen (Geoff) Wusyk. She was blessed with 13 grandchildren and 8 greatgrandchildren. She is predeceased by her loving husband of 40 years and her brothers, Hank and Jake Froese. Mary dedicated her life to helping others, and founded Helping Hands Ministry, where they baled and shipped clothes for needy people all around the world. She loved and served her God with a huge heart and an amazing sense of humor. Although she will be deeply missed, we rejoice in the fact that she is now able to spend eternity praising her Saviour. The family wish to thank the loving staff at Menno Home for all the care they gave Mary. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, June 29th at 11:00 am at Clearbrook MB Church. Donations in memory of Mary may be made for Helping Hands through Clearbrook MB Church.
REID
Nora Josephine (nee Turner) June 12, 1923 ~ June 22, 2011
Nora, a long time resident of Abbotsford and recently of Nanaimo, BC passed suddenly unto her Lord on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at Nanaimo General Hospital. She had just celebrated her 88th birthday. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Bill. She is survived by her children, Valerie (David) Allen, Bill (Paulette) Reid and Trish Hill. She was “Nanny” to Jaime, Jennifer and Jonathan Allen and to Jessica and Sarah Reid, who all adored her. She was a doting great grandmother to Sofia, Victoria, Tobias, Katherine and William Allen and to Samantha Orr. She will be sadly missed by all. Nora’s ready smile and generous hugs endeared her to all, as did her wonderful sense of humour and “joie de vivre”. She was a bridge fiend while she lived in Abbotsford and at the cottage in Ontario. She spent hours nurturing her flowers. But, above all, she was devoted to her family and friends. We all have fond memories of Nora and anecdotes to share at the Celebration of her Life on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at Henderson’s Fraser Valley Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Rd., Abbotsford, at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Connie Thompson will officiate. All her friends are welcome. Nora loved flowers, but she was always a strong supporter of the Cancer Foundation and of the Diabetes Association. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 1:00 pm at Henderson’s Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, BC. Interment will follow at Musselwhite Cemetery. Helen Teichrob passed away June 21, 2011 at the age of 95. She was born November 17, 1915 in Russia in the Bermuel district of Siberia in the village of Schoenwiese to Franz and Elizabeth Unrau. Here she went to school until Grade 4 and in 1926 the family left Russia and headed for Canada where they settled in Morden, MB. Here she started school over again and took Grade 1. The family moved to Arden, MB and she entered Grade 2, and shortly thereafter, the family moved to Youngstown, AB. where she took Grade 2 and 3. In 1928 the family moved yet once again and settled in Margaret, MB where she went to school for the last time because she had to stay home with her ailing mother and do the household chores for the family. She accepted the Lord as her Saviour at a young age and was baptized in 1932 in the Souris River, MB. In 1941 she met the Teichrob’s and John Teichrob was hired to work on the farm. She could not take her eyes off him and they secretly started sending mail to each other. They were married on June 26, 1943. John and Helen then farmed for 3 years in Minto, MB before heading to BC in 1946 and settling on a small farm in Matsqui on Bell Rd. Here they joined the Matsqui M.B. Church and Helen got involved as a Sunday School teacher and in the Sewing Circles. They were blessed with 4 boys and 1 girl. She loved her family dearly and would do anything for them. After her husband’s retirement, they took many camping trips with family and these were very special moments in her life. She had a number of surgeries and after her hip surgery, they moved to the Central Heights Manor which they enjoyed for 6 years. Then, due to John’s health, they moved to the Menno Terrace where she lived for the past 3 ½ years. She was diagnosed with a spot on her lung in the summer of 2010 and this past May it became evident that she was having some difficulty breathing. More tests confirmed that her lungs and respiratory system were shutting down and in her last 2 weeks, all her energy was used just to grasp the next breath. With her husband, children and spouses, several grandchildren by her side, she entered peacefully into the presence of her Lord on June 21, 2011. Predeceased by her 5 brothers, 2 sisters, infant son Victor, Helen is mourned by her loving husband John, children John (Elsie), Rudy (Carol), Len (Irmi) , Henry (Rose), Carol (Joel) Bancroft, 16 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Viewing will be held Wednesday, June 29 between 7 pm and 8:30 pm at Central Heights MB Church, 1661 McCallum Rd., Abbotsford. The graveside service will take place Thursday, June 30 at 11 am at Maclure Road Cemetery, followed by her memorial service at 1 pm at Central Heights MB Church.
